The word asbestos is a broad term that has been accepted and applied to a number of fibrous mineral silicates found in nature. They are incombustible and can be separated by mechanical means into fibers of various lengths and thicknesses, but differ in chemical composition and other properties. It is generally recognized that there are six varieties of asbestos; the finely fibrous form of serpentine known as chrysotile, and five minerals of the amphibole group, i.e., amosite (not fully recognized as a mineral species name but accepted in asbestos terminology), anthophyllite, crocidolite, tremolite and actinolite. (Figs 1-4.) Physical and Other Properties The structures of asbestos fibers have been studied intensely in recent years. X-ray diffraction patterns 1 to 15 have been used as a means of identification and classification. The amphibole group structures have been fairly well established while the serpentine group has been the subject of many investigations during the past six years. Low-angle X-ray scattering techniques5 have shown that the chrysotile fibrils are "hexagonally close packed" and parallel to each other, having cross-sectional diameters varying from 180Å* units to 300Å units, while the amphibole fibers are many times larger in cross section. The electron micrographs of chrysotile asbestos (Figs 1-4) have also indicated that the fibrils might be in the form of a hollow tube. This point has been the subject of considerable controversy by a number of investigators.7 to 16 Density measurements17 made on a sample of high quality Arizona fiber did not indicate that the fiber had a hollow tube structure; however, the so-called "sheet structure" of the fibril could be distorted in such a way that it gives the appearance of a hollow tube in the electron microscope. It is of interest to quote one investigator, F. L. Pundsack,17 in this connection: Although the empirical composition of chrysotile is 3MgO.2SiO2.2H20, the true unit cell[#] composition is best represented as Mg12(OH)16Si8O20. This cell has dimensions of a= 5.3Å, b = 9.2 Å, and c = 14.6 Å where the "a" direction is the fiber axis. The calculated density of this unit is 2.56 g/cc, a value in close agreement with experimentally determined density values for chrysotile. In order to understand more fully the complexities of the reactions occurring between the liquid steel and the slag in the basic open-hearth steelmaking furnace, investigations in this country and. abroad have turned to laboratory equilibrium studies. This paper is one of a series of reports on investigations being conducted at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The experimental work was completed early in 1942. The slag systems found in the basic open hearth are very complex, being made up of at least eight major components and as many others whose effect might be classified as minor. The first two papers of the series, by Fetters and Chipman,l,2 as well as the paper by Taylor and Chip-man,3 dealt with the simplest possible slag system that would resemble those found in the basic ope), hearth—the slag system consisting of CaO-MgO2-SiOz-FeO. (Taylor's rotating induction furnace eliminated the necessity of contamination of the slag by MgO.) Having arrived at some reasonable conclusions regarding the physical chemis- try of the reactions between molten iron and the simple slags at equilibrium, the next step was to investigate more complex slag systems. The major purpose of the present investigation was to determine what factors control the distribution of phosphorus between molten iron and the more complex basic slags at equilibrium, and to what extent these factors are influential. The slags used contained CaO, MgO, SiO2, FeO, Fe2O3, P2O6, MnO, Al2O3 and CaF2, but not all of the slag samples contained all of these components at one time. Review of Literature Although a number of interesting papers have been published on the subject of dephosphorization of an iron bath, there are as yet no results from laboratory studies that give thoroughly reliable information on the dephosphorization reaction. Even for the supposedly simple Fe-O-P system involving iron-phosphorus melts and iron oxide-iron phosphate slags, the experimental results are contradictory and no formulas have been established that adequately fit the equilibrium conditions. The Fe-O-P system has been studied by Schackmann and Krings,4 von Samson-Himmelstjerna,6 Oelsen and Maetz,6 Bischof and Maurer,7 Diepschlag and Schürmann,8 and Herty,9 and the results of their investigations appear in Table I. Results of the application of geo1ogic knowledge to grade control have been remarkable. Grade reduction from dilution has been diminished from greater than 9% at the time of the program's beginning to about 2% at present. This has resulted in an increase of about 1.8 lb of copper per ton of ore mined and has made a substantial contribution to earnings at White Pine during the past two years. Even more improvement is expected in the future. The White Pine orebody, situated in the southwestern portion of the Keweenaw peninsula of upper Michigan, is a gently dipping stratiform or bedded deposit. Copper distribution is stratigraphi-cally controlled with higher values being confined to specific beds in the ore column. Room-and-pillar mining is practiced. Mining technique and geologic characteristics present a special array of problems in controlling the grade of ore. A routine program of grade control was started in the White Pine mine in August 1961. The program is based upon development and application of geologic knowledge to assist mine operating personnel to increase the grade of ore, primarily by accurate stratigraphic control and selection of areas for development on the basis of grade distribution trends. Geologists work closely with mine supervisors to offer the necessary geologic guidance. STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION OF COPPER The important rock series in the White Pine area is comprised of three formations of late Precambrian age. In descending order they are the Freda sandstone, Nonesuch shale, and Copper Harbor conglomerate. The Nonesuch shale is about 600 ft thick. Economic copper concentration occurs only in the lowermost 20 to 25 ft of the formation; however, within a restricted area along the southwest side of the mine the uppermost 1 to 7 ft of the Copper Harbor conglomerate (lower sandstone) contain sufficient quantities of copper to be included in the ore column. The ore consists primarily of chalcocite with subordinate native copper disseminated in shales, siltstones, and sandstones. MINE BOUNDARIES AND STRUCTURE The mine area is bounded on the west by the sub-outcrop of basal Nonesuch at bed rock surface and on the southwest by the White Pine fault (Fig. 1). The south and southeast limit of the orebody is reasonably well delineated by thinning or pinch-out of favorable host beds. Northern, northeastern, and eastern limits have not been established. The White Pine fault is actually a wide zone of shearing which strikes approximately N 40° W. It is downthrown on the southwest side and dips steeply to the northeast. Maximum vertical displacement is about 1500 ft.

One complete cycle, allstenite to martensite to aus-tenite, of Martensitic transformation was induced in a commercial 18 Cr-8 Ni stainless steel. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the reverse transfarmation, martensite to austenite, perpetuated the dense defect substructure of the martensite produced by the direct transformation, austenite to 'martensite, and reproduced the retained austenite matrix orientation. A general precipitation of lathlike M,,C, particles was noted to be present in, and is suggested as cause for, regions of martensite that Izad formed after a complete cycle of transformation. The habit plane of the precipitate particles was found to be within 5 a plane previously established as the habit of nitride precipitates of similar morphology in bcc iron. The direct transformation of austenite (y) to martensite (a) in metastable 300 series stainless steels has received considerable attention in the past,'-8 and the martensite product given special emphasis in recent years,9"*u but little information has been published about the reverse martensitic transformation during which bcc a martensite is converted to fcc y austenite."-" The reversal mechanism and the resulting crystallographic relationship between parent and product austenite are of fundamental concern. The reversal product, fully austenitic, and hereafter referred to as reversed austenite, exhibits a defect structure far different from its virgin counterpart. Some studies have been reported in which the structure of reversed austenite in iron nickel alloys is compared to annealed austenite with respect to austenite strengtheningM and Stabilization.' The martensite in these Fe-Ni alloys, however, shows a basic difference from that produced in stainless steels. Structurally, the Fe-Ni martensite is profusely twinned," while the (low-carbon) Fe-Cr-Ni martensite contains a high density of tangled dislocations and is apparently twin-free.I0 reediis" has recently shown in an Fe-16 Cr-12 Ni stainless alloy that this typical martensitic defect structure and the reverse transformation directly influence the structure of the reversal product. He found that much of the reversed austenite had returned to the orientation of the virgin austenite and that fine twins were formed in the austenite after the reverse transformation. This investigation was undertaken in order to describe as completely as possible the structural changes produced by a cycle of transformation in a typical 18-8 stainless steel. A froth flotation unit was added to the DeBardeleben Coal Corporation's Empire washer at Empire, Alabama, in the fall Of I94O following an investigation of possible ways and means of recovering coal values from settling-tank overflow or slurry. Officials of the DeBardeleben corporation hoped that some practical and reasonably economical way could be found for recovering fine coal from overflow water, although there had as yet been very little progress along this line in the Alabama coal fields. The Bureau of Mines was asked to cooperate in the project through its Southern Experiment Station, at University, Alabama. This paper presents a brief description of the process and the installation that resulted from the investigation of the overflow water or slurry problem at the Empire mine. The experimental data include' as a Part of this Paper were obtained during the course of the investigation in 1940 Since that time, however, the flotation unit has been running more or less continuously without significant operational changes and is still Performing pretty much in accordance with the data obtained in 1940. Flowsheet at Empire and Type of Coal Treated The Empire mine is developed on the Black Creek bed near the the border of the Warrior field. The coal in this bed is extremely low-ash and although there is an almost complete absence of bone coal and partings, the bed is so thin that, with mechanized mining, a high percentage of rock from roof and floor inevitably gets into the run-of-mine coal. The thickness of the Black Creek bed throughout the part of the Warrior field in which it is mined extensively is rarely over 30 in. and probably would average about 25 in, the coal is of the high-volatile A rank and of excellent quality, but as a result of admixture of roof and floor material, the run-of-mine product usually contains I ; to 20 pct rock by weight. he following is a proximate analysis on an "as-received " basis of a typical seam sample from the Empire mine:' moisture, 3.0 pet; volatile, 34.6 fixed carbon 58.3; ash, 4.1 This sample shelved 15,070 Btu per pound and 0.9 pct sulphur on a moisture-and-ash-free basis. INTEREST in the various products of the austenite eutectoid transformation in iron-carbon alloys, particularly as produced by the isothermal sub-critical techniques introduced by Davenport and Bain,1 has resulted in the application of similar heat treatments to other eutectoid transformations. Studies2.3.4 of the beta copper-aluminum alloy eutectoid transformation revealed microstructures very similar to those found in iron-carbon alloys. Investigations5,6 of the kappa phase in the copper-silicon alloy system have established the eutectoid type transformation of this phase into terminal alpha and intermediate gamma phases. This transformation has been reported' as forming a eutectoid type structure in a very sluggish manner by a long time isothermal treatment. The purpose of the present investigation is to study the products of the kappa eutectoid transformation as affected by transformation temperatures by means of microscopic and hardness methods. PREPARATION OF ALLOYS The copper-silicon alloy equilibrium diagram is shown in Fig I. The kappa field converges to a minimum silicon solubility at the eutectoid composition and all other completely kappa alloys are hypereutectoid. Thus, kappa decomposition involves first the proeutectoid precipitation of gamma, followed by the eutectoid transformation of a lower silicon content kappa (5.2 pct). Smith5 has indicated that alloys containing between 5.4 and 5.7 pct silicon could be hot rolled, but that the latter composition was desirable in order to permit a wider kappa temperature range. The alloy was prepared by adding Baker's commercially pure silicon to an ingot of copper-silicon alloy containing 2.34 pct silicon remaining from the investigation of Brick, Martin and Angier.7 Following the casting techniques of Krynitsky, Saunders and Stern,8 the ingot was melted under a heavy layer of dried charcoal in a clay-graphite crucible in a gas-fired pot furnace. Small lumps of silicon were held under the melt surface with a graphite rod. After the silicon had dissolved, the alloy was chill-cast and then remelted without a cover, stirred thoroughly, skimmed and poured into a preheated cast iron mold. The cast microstructure is shown in Fig 2. The casting, 10 X 4 X ¾ in., was annealed at 750°C for 21 brand furnace cooled. About 1/16 in. was milled from all surfaces. The plate was cut in half longitudinally and the bottom half analyzed by A.S.T.M. methods.9 The composition by weight was as follows: copper 94.24 pct, silicon 5.56 pct, iron 0.11 pct.

INTRODUCTION The determination of cloud points has to date been limited to rather transparent oils, visual observation of the formation of a solid phase being the criterion for the standard ASTM D 97-47 method. The need for a quiclc and simple method for determining cloud points under dynamic conditions for opaque crude oils became necessary in a study of fundamental aspects of paraffin deposition from crude oils. PREVIOUS WORK The determination of cloud points in opaque oils by viscosity temperature curves is fairly new, Young' described a method employing the capillary tube principle. No information exists relative to the determination of cloud points of crude or refined oils under dynamic conditions. Shock' noticed that deposition of paraffin from crude oils took place at temperatures at or below the temperature at which a sharp inflection point occurred in the viscosity-temperature curve. This observation indicates a possible correlation between this temperature and the cloud point of the crude oil. Reistle and Vietti1 have reported that when crude oils containing small amounts of asphaltic materials were heated to temperatures sufficiently high to solubilize these materials and immediately cooled the pour point of the crude oil was lowered as much as 70°F. Sachanen\ asribes this effect to the action of colloidal asphaltenes in preventing the formation of the crystalline structure necessary to maintain the oil in a rigid state. At high temperatures, asphaltenes are peptized, and the paraffin crystals formed at these temperatures adsorb the colloidal asphaltenes on their surface thereby hindering further growth of the crystals. Reistle" found, however, that such heating and cooling of crude oils had no effect upon the cloud points. This latter work dealt with a crude oil of fixed composition, and the question immediately arises as to the effect of varying the concentration of asphaltic materials on the cloud point. APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE All viscosity measurements were made with a Bendix Ultra-Viscoson. The Bendix Ultra-Viscoson, which consists of a vibrating probe and an electronic computer. measures viscosity by exciting a thin alloy steel blade on the end of a probe by short electrical pulses in damped oscillation at 28 kilocycles. The blade vibrates longitudinally with an amplilude of less than 55 micron or 20 millionths of an inch. Energy to protlucc this excitation is generated in he computer and transferred to the probe through the connecting cable. The oscillating blade is magnetostric-tive, i.e., it is capable of transforming electrical energy to mechanical energy in the ultrasonic range. Ultrasonic waves are produced in the material surrounding the blade by the oscillating motion of the blade causing layers of the material to slip back and forth over one another at a known frequency. The electronic computer calculates the energy required to produce the sliding motion which is in turn proportional to the viscosity of the material. Actual values of viscosity times density (centi-poise X grams/cc) are indicated on the computer and a continuous D-C signal is provided which is fed into a type 153 Electronic Recorder (manufactured by Brown Instruments Div. of Minneapolis-Honeywell Regulator Co.) The liquid sample container was fabricated from a Lucite cylinder and jacketed by a Luicite water bath. Early experiments using glass and steel sample containers were not satisfactory. since the Ultra-Viscoson was apparently affected by the alterzltion of the magnetic fields surrounding the probe by stresses set LIP in the glass and steel as it cooled. The procedure for determining viscosity-temperature curves was relatively simple. The temperature ot the sample was raised sufficiently high to solubilize all paraffin and asphalts present. Single crystals of columbium containing various levels of oxygen, nitrogen, carbon, or hydrogen were deformed by slaw compression and impact loading at -196°C. For the slow deformation rates. 1500 to 1900ppm oxygen, 500 pprn nitrogen, or 150 to 200 ppm carbon completely suppressed mechanical twinning. Hydrogen in concentrations to 1000 ppm had no apparent effect on ease of twinning. Impact loading caused twins to form at all levels of contamination studied, and cleavage mucking on (100) planes occurred in specimens having higher interstitial contents. It is well established that, under some conditions, the bcc metals vanadium, columbium, tantalum, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, and iron deform by formation of mechanical twins. In general it has been accepted that high strain rates, low temperatures, and large grain sizes are conducive to this kind of deformation.' Since interstitial impurity atoms have a relatively large effect on slip in bcc metals, one might sus- pect a similar effect on twinning. This could occur directly by the interstitials affecting the nucleation or growth of the twins or indirectly from their effect on slip. It has often been argued that the large increase in yield stress caused by interstitial elements enables the effective stress to exceed that necessary to cause twinning. The twinning stress has always been thought to be higher than the stress necessary to cause slip in pure metals.2 simonsens and Tipper and Hall4 found profuse twinning in very pure a iron even at room temperature, whereas Low and Fueste15 and Churchman and tottrell' observed twins in a iron containing carbon but none in highly decarburized specimens. McHargue7 reported mechanical twins to form readily in vanadium which contained 390 ppm interstitigs, while Clough and Pavlovic8 found twins only in the one or two grains adjacent to the fracture surface in vanadium which contained 1500 to 1700 ppm interstitials. In columbium, McHargue9 found high-purity single crystals to twin easily whereas Churchman,10 Adams, Roberts, and mallman,11 and Johnson12 studied less pure material and found far fewer twins. Although the results of Leadbetter and Argent13 showed oxygen to inhibit twinning, a study by sheely14 indicated the opposite to be true. Chromium exhibits this mode of deformation15,16 but there are no data regarding impurity effects. Lawley, Van den Sype, and Maddin17 observed twins in very pure molybdenum single crystals deformed at 77°K but none in less pure crystals. The work by Cahn18 and

Vacuum flotation tests carried out according to the method of Schuhmann and Prakash1 have shown that the acid limiting edge of the flotation area for a Brazilian hematite, in the presence of dodecylamine, is a straight line of slope approximately unity. The flotation tests and the structure, surface ionization, and electrokinetic properties of this hematite have been fully discussed elsewhere. 2 The numbers of adsorbed H+, and OH- ions and collector molecules have been determined in the range of critical conditions defining the acid limit of the flotation area. The total amine adsorption is shown in Fig. 1 as a set of contours superimposed on the straight part of the flotation area. These were determined by spectro-photometric estimation of the complex formed between residual amine and the anionic dye Orange II.3 The ionic strength of the solutions was kept constant and at a value in sufficient excess of the amine concentration to ensure that the diffuse part of the double layer was populated predominantly by indifferent ions. Adsorption of H+ and OH- in the absence of amine was found by potentiometric acid-base titration in the presence of hematite.4 The form of the adsorption-titration curves suggested that the hematite surface behaves in an amphoteric manner, and that positively charged sites arise through loss of a hydroxyl ion, and negatively charged sites by loss of a hydrogen ion. On this basis, curves 8 and 9, shown in Fig. 2, were calculated from the titration curves. These show the variation of the numbers of positive (s +) and negative (s—) sites with pH. To distinguish between ionic and other modes of adsorption, zeta-potential determinations have also been made using the streaming potential technique. The influence of amine on the zeta-potential of the mineral over a wide pH range is shown in Fig. 3. The change in charge ?s, due to adsorption of amine ions in the Stern layer, was calculated by applying the Gouy-Chapman theory, as modified by Stem, to the results shown in Fig. 3. The validity of this treatment has been shown by Ottewill and Jaycock.5 The three full lines, Nos. (1) through (3), included in Fig. 2 show the relationship between ?s and pH at three amine concentrations. The general conclusion from the zeta-potential curves is that adsorption of amine causes a reduction in the negative charge on the surface. The second paper presented evidence indicating that zinc atoms in alpha brass diffuse across the interface more rapidly in one direction than the copper atoms diffuse across the interface in the opposite direction. This phenomenon forced the interface to move in the opposite direction of the diffusion of zinc atoms to provide space for the additional zinc atoms dissolved in the alpha brass. That the interface and columnar grain structure on one side would remain intact during this mass movement was not expected; however, it is gratifying that they did. While the evidence was sufficiently satisfying to the author, it was decided that additional experiments were in order to prove that zinc diffuses more rapidly than copper in alpha brass. All major regions in a progressively solidified germanium ingot were related through successive orders of octahedral twinning. The occurrence of lineage structure and the generation and survival of orientations are discussed. WHEN metals solidify in a temperature gradient a preferred orientation, or casting texture, usually develops. For example, in face-centered and body-centered cubic metals, most of the solidifying crystals have a cube axis, <loo>, aligned approximately in the freezing direction.&apos; In the solidification of diamond cubic metals this is not the case, since there is a natural tendency to form twin orientations.&apos; . In this paper, twinning relationships in cast germanium are described; some conclusions with respect to nucleation and survival of new orientations are discussed. In the first experiment, an ingot of high purity germanium, % in. in diameter and 1 % in. in length, was formed by progressive solidification4 from the bottom. The ingot was cut into 21 slices, each circular and about 0.030 in. thick. The top surface of each slice was polished and etched to reveal the regions of different orientations. Orientations were determined by the Laue X-ray back-reflection method. The uncertainty in the determined orientation relationships was l" or 2" when separate slices and films were involved. Frequently, however, advantage was taken of illuminating across a boundary when the patterns of the two orientations were recorded on the same film. The uncertainty then was less than 1". Often the twin relation was evident from common zones or individual reflections. Twin relationships were recognized through comparison of the values of the nine angles between cube poles of the two orientations with those calculated for successive orders of octahedral twinning. The birth and survival of each region can be reconstructed by visual examination of the etched slices shown in Fig. 1. In slice 21, where solidification began, many regions are present; these regions were found to be twin-related. Solidification appears to have started from one nucleus formed probably at the wall of the crucible.* Subsequent ori- entations were developed by nucleation on existing solid surfaces, and only in the twin relationship. This is an example of a general process of nucleation on a surface of existing solid and may be descriptively termed oriented nuc1eation.t In germanium, and other diamond cubic substances, the orienting habit is that of twinning on an octahedral plane.&apos; " The prevalence of straight traces in the polished surfaces of succeeding slices (Fig. 1) suggests that the twinning observed in the first slice persisted throughout solidification. This was confirmed by X-ray determinations. The schematic diagram of Fig. 2 shows the twinning relationships of the major regions throughout the ingot. Since all observed relationships are describable as twinning, it is reasonable to conclude that no random nucleation occurred in the freezing of the ingot. An alternative possibility would be that nucleation of a random nature occurred, but only those nuclei in twin orientations survived in subsequent growth. This is unlikely for there would be as good a reason for the growth of randomly oriented nuclei as for the growth of the many different orientations present after several orders of twinning. The many twin components contain a wide distribution of orientations, and did grow. In fact, they are the only ones found in the solid. The conditions of solidification of this ingot were such as to discourage nucleation of crystals wholly in the liquid. The rate of solidification was 0.125 in. per min. This slow rate of heat removal afforded but small opportunity for supercooling within the liquid —a condition needed to provide enough decrease in free energy for such nucleation. When nucleation occurs on an existing solid surface, the interfacial energy between the existing and forming regions is important in determining the new stable orientation. Introduction The use of frequency of vibration measurements to determine tension has long been accepted by industries that use electrical or stranded cables of wire ropes in their operations. In contemplating how to determine the tension in chords of a roof truss, it seems almost inevitable that a similar approach should be investigated even though there are some important dissimilarities in physical behavior between a chord of a rod-type Birmingham truss and a stretched wire rope. While the dominant feature of both types of behavior is the existence of tension, the bending resistance of the vibrating truss chord cannot be ignored. And it is common to have attached to the chord, pieces of hardware (turnbuckles, extension sleeves, wedge boxes) that represent concentrations of mass not usually found in a vibrating wire rope. Analytical solutions to the problem of vibrating wires or beams can be found in the literature on vibrations (Timoshensko, 1955; Den Hartog, 1956). But in every case, at least one of the ingredients of the vibrating truss chord is missing. The presence of axial tension, or bending resistance, of concentrated masses and of end conditions peculiar to truss chords is a combination that appears not to have been dealt with before, although the techniques for dealing with it are commonly known. The purpose of this note is to report the results of a project to measure and calibrate such frequencies. The work was conducted by the University of Pittsburgh under the sponsorship of the US Bureau of Mines. Field observations Tests were conducted on 24 different truss installations. The first 18 trusses were installed in shale roofs above Kentucky No. 9 seam and Illinois No. 6 seam. The remaining six were placed against the competent sandstone over the Pocahontas No. 3 seam in West Virginia. Chord tension was determined by two electrical resistance strain gages, in series, applied diametrically opposite to one another on the rod before tensioning. Due to the combined effects of inexact gage placement, rod bending and residual torsion in the chord due to tightening, errors in tension as high as 1780 N (400 lb) were reasonably possible. Due to faulty soldering or damage, three of the first 18 trusses and one of the final six were rendered completely unreliable. In addition to strain, the first natural frequency of vibration was observed to the nearest 0.1 Hz. Dimensions recorded included the span between contact points at the bearing blocks (Fig. 1) and the locations and amount of excess rod and rod gap at the wedge box and turnbuckle, respectively.

The physical properties, chemical behavior under thermal treatment, and fertilizer value of fluorine-containing pseudowavellite (hydrous calcium aluminum phosphate) that occurs as phosphate clay admixed with quartz sand in an extensive deposit near Bartow, Fla., were determined by experiments in laboratory, pilot-plant, and greenhouse. When the mineral was heated at 500°C, 80 pct of the phosphorus become citrate soluble. The heated product, however, deteriorates markedly under moist conditions such as obtain in the soil. EXTENSIVE beds of a soft aluminiferous phosphate lie in the Bartow-Pembroke region of Florida. Although the extent of the deposit is unknown, it is thought that the equivalent of at least five million tons of material containing 25 pct P,Os exists on one large mine property alone, and soft phosphates similar in nature are known to occur elsewhere in the state. This aluminum phosphate, unlike fluorapatite, is rendered fairly soluble in neutral ammonium citrate solution merely by heating it at a temperature below 600 °C, a property made the basis of a process patent by the junior author.&apos; The possibility of producing an available form of phosphorus from what has hitherto been a worthless natural phosphate prompted the Bureau of Plant Industry, Soils, and Agricultural Engineering to make a brief study of the Pembroke phos- phate during the war years with a view towards determining the optimal temperature for heat treatment and the reactions involved in the process. The results of this study supplemented by data and information furnished by the junior author are presented in this paper. Description of Natural Phosphate: The phosphate with admixed quartz sand and siliceous matter occurs as a low-grade (8 to 9 pct P2O5) clay-like material that can be beneficiated cheaply by making a water separation of the very fine material from the sand, floating off the fine material, settling the suspension to a thick slurry, and finally de-watering the slurry by vacuum filtration followed by drying. The product dried at 100 °C contains about 16 pct water and 25 pct P2O5, about 1/12 of which is citrate soluble. Partial analyses of representative samples of the crude ore and corresponding concentrate are given in table I. The concentrate is light yellow in color and even after being dried at 100°C sticks very noticeably to laboratory grinding and screening equipment. Under the microscope the ground material is predominantly light brown crystalline aggregates with index of refraction near 1.61. The principal phosphate mineral constituent was identified as pseudo-wavellite with admixed phosphosiderite.2 Pseudo-
