During the year, there were 570 oil wells completed for a total daily initial production of 365,352 bbl. The daily oil potential of the field, effective Jan. 1, 1935, as established by the Texas Railroad Commission, was 306,102 bbl. with a daily allowable of 58,800 bbl., whereas, on Dec. 31, 1935, the potential was 587,376 bbl. with a daily allowable of 57,800 bbl. Because of the limited market demand, the allowable decreased although the potential increased. In August, the five-day test for determining the potential production of a well was replaced by a 24-hr. test. The reason for this change was that some of the oil-pur-chasing companies contended that too much oil in excess of the limited market demand was produced during the five-day tests. Dry Gas.—During July, the Texas Railroad Commission supervised the first complete and accurate field-wide test of open flows that has been made in this area. The total open flow as determined at that time was 16,426,085,000 cu. ft, There were 79 gas wells drilled in '935, with a combined open flow of 2,408,000,000 cu. ft. and 50 depleted oil wells were plugged back for gas with a total open flow of 529,800,000 cu. ft. The total new gas production for the year was, therefore, 2,937,800,000 cu. ft. The 17 natural-gas pipe lines drawing on the Panhandle supply of fuel gas withdrew a daily average of 420,497,507 cu. ft., or a total of 153,481,-590,000 cu. ft. for the year. The 44th Texas Legislature passed a statute known as House Bill No. 266, which was designed to prohibit waste and protect correlative rights by compelling the ratable production of gas. The part of the law relative to withdrawal of sweet gas became effective Aug. 1, 1935, and the part referring to withdrawal of sour gas became effective Oct. 1, 1935. Three of the major pipe line companies attacked the validity of the ratable production feature of the new law and a preliminary injunction was granted by the Federal District Court. The final hearing on the incrits of the case is scheduled for the early part of January. SAFETY in open-pit mining receives a minimum of notoriety, but its significance in profitable and efficient operation is as great as in other methods of mining. Open-pit operators from Arizona, New Mexico, and Mexico, exchanging ideas on safety at a symposium during the recent annual meeting of the Arizona Section, AIME, discovered unanimity of opinion that the successful safety program depended on managerial and supervisory support with the vigorous cooperation of the employes. Safety Organization The operation of a safety program is dependent on the ability of management to project enthusiasm through the company organization. This requires a suitable method of communication to the supervisory and employee levels so as to approach them in a manner that will inspire cooperation. Safety committees comprised of various combinations of managerial, supervisory, and employe personnel are frequently used for this purpose. The open-cut mine of the Chino Division of the Kennecott Copper Corp., Santa Rita, N. Mex., operates its program through management, a full-time safety engineer, and two safety committees, the Departmental and Shops Safety Committee and the Central Safety Committee. The Departmental and Shops Committee consists of one employe from each department and shop and the safety engineer. The selected members serve for a period of one month. This committee meets once a month, the only representative of management being the safety engineer because it is believed that employes will speak more freely when their supervisors are not present. The duties of the committee are to report hazardous conditions and make recommendations, but the committee has no authority to approve or disapprove. The Central Safety Committee is comprised of supervisory personnel from all departments and shops, and one member of each of the five bargaining organizations. Members of this committee are permanent and hold meetings soon after the departmental group to take action on recommendations of the latter. The committee system insures participation of all levels of personnel in the accident-prevention program, thereby stimulating safety consciousness. The New Cornelia branch of the Phelps-Dodge Corp., uses three groups to conduct the safety program; the General Safety Committee, Division Safety Committee, and the operating-unit safety meetings. The unit safety meetings provide for active participation of employes in discussion of various phases of the program. Within these groups vigorous opinions regarding safety are often expressed and the workmen are critical if they recognize a digression from the adopted safe-practice procedures. These monthly discussions give the program vitality. The Division Safety Committee is composed of the division superintendent and the division department heads, and follows an established pattern in discussion of all phases of the safety program. The General Safety Committee, made up of the manager, division, and department heads, makes decisions on policies and procedures; it renders decisions on recommendations and suggestions. Management at the New Cornelia branch feels this system of safety committees and meetings has been active in advancing the program. A week-long educational program and two-day symposium on applying the fluidizing reactor to the minerals industry drew more than 100 engineers to the University of Arizona at Tucson several weeks ago. The educational program, intended for engineers who will work closely with the reactor, attracted registrants from all sections of the U. S. and Canada. Meeting at the College of Mines on February 23 for a full week of intensive classwork, the engineers ploughed in with enthusiasm. Eight hours daily of lectures and laboratory work were followed by a generous helping of homework supplied by Professor Sigmund L. Smith, who directed the course. The study program was completed on Friday and the following Monday marked the start of a symposium of technical papers covering a wide variety of operations and new ideas.

IN what ways can conventional geophysical methods be used in the search for quartz-sulphide veins covered by several feet of overburden? The New Park Mining Co., in search of an answer to this question, empirically tested simple geochemical, electrical, and magnetic methods over known ore bodies and geologic structures. Geochemical methods were the only ones found to be applicable to direct ore search. Indirect uses were found for electrical and magnetic tests. Experiments were conducted in the southeastern part of the Park City mining district. Ore in this part of the district is found principally in steeply dipping veins which are localized along faults and fractures that cut Paleozoic sediments and quartz diorite intrusives. Lower recoveries of coarse Phosphate rock by froth flotation technique, however, led to the development of new methods based on skin flotation of phosphate agglomerates. Recent developments of floating coarse rock in large flotation machines have not yet convinced the rock Producers of their higher separation efficiency. It is interesting to note that the selection of a particular machine is still bared on equipment preference by an individual company as well as proven performance of a particular machine for upgrading a specific material. Various techniques which have been developed to beneficiate the coarse phosphate rock have been discussed. Performance of the individual techniques is presented.

Most of the data on equilibrium constant and the deoxidations potentialities of those elements, considered to be stronger deoxidizers for steel than is silicon, have been calculated from thermodynamic data. The reason for this is, primarily, the obvious difficulty of obtaining direct experimental evidence of equivalent accuracy. This is an excellent use of the principles of thermodynamics and has given valuable data not otherwise available. Such results, of course, can be no more accurate than the physical constants used in the calculations, and one can never be sure that the basic data are either complete or accurate. In fact, as in the case with silicon,1 there are not only discrepancies among the calculated theoretical values of the equilibrium constant for deoxidation of steel but also between the theoretical and experimental values. It is highly desirable, therefore, to obtain experimental values for checks on calculated results whenever possible. If they disagree, both cannot be right, but if there is good agreement, their value is enhanced. The present work was done in an effort to obtain experimental evidence in regard to some of the common alloying additions but more particularly the so-called "strong" deoxidizers for steel. The method used was to determine the minimum concentration of the deoxidizer that would effect a certain definite degree of deoxidation in steel. The criterion of deoxidation was the change from the large globular Type I sulphide to the eutectic Type II as described by Sims and Dahle.2 This change is sharp and definite, and inasmuch as it can be produced with equal facility by aluminum, zirconium, and titanium, it is considered a manifestation of a certain degree of deoxidation and not an alloying effect. Ostensibly such a procedure could give only a comparison of deoxidizing powers and no absolute values. Nevertheless, repeated observations have shown that, when increasing increments of aluminum are added to a steel, the residual aluminum content begins to increase simultaneously with the appearance of Type II inclusions. Thus it seems warranted to postulate that the Type II inclusions appear coincident with the virtual elimination of FeO as an active constituent of the steel. Experimental Procedure The data obtained were primarily from the microexamination of polished and unetched specimens and from chemical analysis. Experimental heats weighing 200 to 250 lb were made in a basic-lined high-frequency induction furnace. The base composition was nominally that of a medium-carbon casting steel to which the appropriate additions were made. Specimens were poured into sand-cast ingots 3 in. in diam as shown in Fig 1. Sand-cast ingots were used to prevent chilling and to allow sufficient time in freezing for normal inclusions to form of a size large enough to be studied readily. In the first few heats, the tapered wall ingot was used, but in the majority, the extra large riser was used to prevent piping in heavily deoxidized steels. Specimens for microexamination were taken from the location shown in Fig 1, and drillings for chemical analysis were taken from a similar location. The procedure was to melt the base composition and deoxidize with the usual manganese and silicon additions and then to pour an ingot. The furnace was then tilted back, and the first increment of strong deoxidizer or special alloy was added and allowed to disseminate through the melt, with enough power on to hold the temperature constant, for 45 sec. Then a second ingot was poured. After this, another increment was added, and after the same holding time another ingot was poured. In this way from 9 to 12 ingots were poured from each heat, each successive ingot having progressively larger total additions of alloy. Eighteen heats were made altogether, and the range of alloys used and additions made are outlined in Table 1. The three principal types of sulphide inclusions found are illustrated in Fig 2. The globular Type I sulphides are characteristic of silicon-killed steels, the eutectic Type II are characteristic of steels deoxidized with a small amount of aluminum, while the larger, angular Type III are usually found in steels with a residual aluminum content above about 0.02 pct. In all specimens studied, the transition from Type I to II either did not occur at all or was very abrupt and clear cut. There never was any doubt as to just which increment produced the change, although the individual additions were small, in the order of 0.01 pct. The change from Type II to Type III was considerably less sharp, and, in some cases, both types were found together. Inasmuch as the formation of Type III sulphides is apparently not a deoxidation phenomenon, they will not be discussed here.

PREPARATION of mechanically loaded coal in mines where seams contain considerable impurities is a subject that requires careful consideration before machines are installed, unless provision is made at the tipple for its preparation. Conditions vary a great deal in the different seams, so much so that a mechanical loader may be unsuccessful in one seam and yet the same machine may make good in another where conditions are different. The effect of impurities in the coal seam on mechanical loading will also vary according to the thickness of the seam. In thin seams impurities will be more difficult to remove than from thick seams, as will appear later. For the past several years the New River Co. has done considerable experimenting with loading equipment and during this process has changed from one machine to another.

The evaluation of in-situ rock stresses from measurements of the change in diameter of a borehole that is stress-relieved by overcoring has become a common practice. Generally the stress evaluation has been based on isotropic relations whereas rock in varying degrees is aniso tropic. A plane elasticity solution fora circular hole along one axis of an orthotropic medium has been adapted to evaluation of in situ stress. The necessary elastic parameters for this evaluation may conveniently be obtained from static tests on the overcore in conjunction with a consistent orthotropic thick-wall cylinder solution. The method and equations for the laboratory and field evaluations are summarized and illustrated. The determination of in-situ rock stresses from boreholc deformation measurements has gained widespread acceptance. Hastl measured the change in diameter of a borehole that was stress-relieved by drilling a larger concentric core; this overcoring method has produced a major portion of the field data for recent stress evaluations in rock. These evaluations are based on the elastic properties of the rock, which are conveniently determined by testing the overcore.6-8 The stress evaluation and the overcore testing procedures generally assume isotropic relations whereas rock is anisotropic in varying degrees. Recently, an anisotropic plane stress solution was adapted for evaluation of in-situ stress9 and a related plane strain solution was developed for the testing of stress-relief core. 10 The present paper unifies the stress evaluation and overcore testing procedures for a general class of anisotropic rock. Equations are presented for calculating the state of stress in a plane normal to the borehole, and a consistent thick-wall cylinder solution is given for determining the necessary elastic properties. In addition, a complete example of stress evaluation from laboratory and field data is presented, and the order of error in computing the state of stress from isotropic relations is illustrated. Several limitations of the results should be emphasized. All results assume small linearly elastic deformations of a homogeneous medium. Rock characterized by orthotropic, transversely isotropic, and isotropic elasticity is considered; however, the anisotropic results assume a special relation among certain elastic constants in addition to geometric orientation with respect to a plane of elastic symmetry. For some stress determinations in rock, these may be severe limitations. On the other hand, the anisotropic evaluation procedure involves little additional effort and is much more flexible than the corresponding isotropic evaluation procedure. The collection of field data is identical. The laboratory determination of elastic parameters is no more difficult and time-consuming for the anisotropic than for the isotropic model. Only the calculations require some additional effort for the anisotropic evaluation, and this additional effort is eliminated by use of a small computer. The flexibility of the anisotropic procedure is greater because more than two independent elastic constants are available in fitting rock data. For the special relationship assumed among orthotropic constants, five independent elastic constants are available for the determination of in-situ secondary principal stresses as compared with two independent elastic constants for the isotropic model. Much of the material presented is either directly from the literature or adapted from the literature through superposition or the usual transformations. Consequently, only enough detail for clarity of presentation is included. THE decision of the lower court (United States District Court for the Southern District of New York) in the suit of the Dwight & Lloyd Sintering Co., vs. John E. Greenawalt has been affirmed by the United States Circuit Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. In the original suit, infringement of seven patents was alleged, these covering the process of producing a sinter .out of finely pulverized metalliferous ores as practised in shallow pans operating intermittently in distinction to the Dwight 6: Lloyd continuous machine. The court found that the long delay in bringing suit precluded any recovery of profits from the defendant under the basic down-draft sintering patent, although Dwight & Lloyd are recognized as the inventors of this' contribution to the art and its .importance is acknowledged.

An increasing number of water pollution control systems are certain to be installed by many industries in the future because of new federal, state and local government regulations, and because of the rising general concern about the deterioration of our water resources. Extensive engineering, some of it based on methods not yet developed, will be required if these new systems are to provide optimum pollution control. Among the primary design factors to be considered are capital cost, operating cost, and present and future regulatory requirements. Establishing A Survey and Test Program To produce a final plant effluent meeting regulatory agency requirements, engineers must have background data that are accurate and representative of present and future plant operation. Operating and plant engineering departments often have available much information, including plant water quantitative and qualitative requirements, both present and future, that can be helpful in the preparation of designs of pollution control systems.

In view of the good results which have followed the wide discussion of the rail-specifications of the American Section of the International Association for Testing Materials, I now offer for discussion its specifications for steel forgings and steel castings. It is not necessary to emphasize the importance of reaching definite conclusions on these subjects. Engineers, consumers and manufacturers are alike interested in securing good, reliable, uniform steel. In this connection, I would call particular attention to the important paper read by Mr. C. H. Ridsdale, last September, before the Iron and Steel Institute, as bearing on them; and, for convenience of reference in the discussion, I append the Table in Section VI. of his paper, on a Manifestations, Classified mider Heads of Faults of Different Types. appearing after Treatment by the User, for Tracing their Probable Source."* The discussion of these specifications will be practically a continuation of our former discussions on "The Physics of Steel." We have passed through a period in which the chemical composition of steel has received the greatest prominence; but failures of steel forgings and castings of the best chemical composition have shown that we could not control the quality of the finished product by the chemical composition alone. It must be admitted that differences in the physical properties of the steel, greater than those due to small variations in composition,are produced by heat-treatment, both in connection with the mechanical work of forging and otherwise. The present result is a strong tendency to deem the heat-treatment more important than the chemical composition. I think the mean course is the safer. We should give them equal importance; for we know that to produce the best results me must start with a good

According to published reports, controlled production from the Masjid-i-Sulaiman and Haft Kel fields for the year 1934 was as follows: No new development of major importance in either of these areas is reported. Owing to the increasing- demand in North Iran, particularly for gasoline and kerosene, it has been arranged that this market shall in future draw its supplies from a newly constructed refinery at Kennan-shah. This refinery is connected by a 3-in. pipe line, 145 miles long, with the Naft-i-Shah field, on the borders of Iraq and Iran. The crude oil will pass through a topping plant at the field and the products will be stored and pumped to the Kermanshah refinery in such proportions and quantities as are demanded by actual market requirements.

Y.).-It may be n matter of some interest that sodium cyanide is now being made commercially by melting together in an electric furnace calcium cyanide with a common salt, which produces calcium chloride and sodium cyanide. It seems to me entirely possible that you have here about the same results that would be obtained by melting calcium chloride and ordinary cyanide together, only you obtain it a good deal cheaper. There is no doubt about that reaction once it is being carried on on a large industrial scale for the manufacture of cyanide for other uses. I think probably the same, thing takes place here, with the possible exception of lowering the melting point due to the presence of the calcium chloride.
