Consolidation Coal Co.'s Renton mine, a 680 000-t/y (750,000-stpy) underground operation located in western Pennsylvania, has reduced the time required for overcast construction in its advancing operations by adopting a prebolting technique followed by multiple blasting. In the past, the mine's overcasts had been excavated by the continuous mining machines used to advance the section. More recently, the overcasts were blasted down and then rebolted with a stoper drill. The new system, using a two-part combination bolt, has proven very successful in speeding up overall construction time and providing more positive horizontal control in blasting. The prebolting approach allows the roof to be blasted down and loaded out without the need for rebolting the shot-out area.

None of the industry submissions could persuade the Canadian Tax Reform draftsmen that the rate of return has had as much bearing on investors' decisions to invest in Canada as the success records of Canadian ore findings. The goverment opted for the position that mining capital goes where the ore can be found. Many tax incentives which were available until the end of 1971 have been greatly reduced. However, it is still recognized that new ventures in exploration and development of natural resources deserve a break even if there is reduced recognition of the established and highly successful members of the industry unless they continue to search and develop. The latter will also get some breaks for processing beyond the prime metal stage.

In the 1st part of this paper a comparassion of the different methods for determining the modules of elasticity and deformation of hard rock is made. It is found that the plate bearing method has a serious shortcoming. The slit flat-jack method seems to be a mare reasonable technique, which is recommended as a desirable method for in situ testing. In the 2nd part, a new test method to determine the properties of deformation and strength of weak plane in rock mass is recommended. Then the relation of weak plane character to the character of stress-strain curve, the relation of normal stress to the character of shear displacement curve and the yielding criterion of weak plane are discussed.

TURMOIL has been rampant in the lead producing industry during 1946. The chronic labor shortage was aggravated by various work stoppages in mines, smelters, and refineries, while shortage of materials was widespread. Price uncertainties helped to confuse the situation in many countries and particularly in the United States until the removal of price control in the latter part of the year. At the end of the first year of peace, lead, which had been comparatively plentiful during the war years, was a scarce and high-priced metal throughout the world. It is the hope of the industry that the law of supply and demand, if allowed to operate without interference, will bring about a satisfactory balance between production and consumption. Under these circumstances it is not surprising that there have been few important developments in the metallurgy of lead, though a number of items of general interest to the industry have been reported. An ore body which may prove to be of considerable importance has been discovered at Mpanda, Tanganyika. The scarcity of lead ore is illustrated by the announced reopening of the La Manche lead mine in Newfoundland, idle for 56 years. A new lead producer came into production when Rhodesia Broken Hill started up its new smelter. Lead concentrate of 75 per cent grade is smelted in Scotch hearths and the lead is refined to market grade by the Harris process without desilverizing. Production is about 1000 tons per month. One Australian lead producer, Mount Isa, has returned to lead production after having operated its lead plant for the production of copper during the war. The East Chicago plant of the International Smelting and Refining Co. has been sold to the Eagle-Picher Co.

On Friday, Jan. 17, the thirteenth impression of the Perkin Medal was presented to Dr. Frederick Gardner Cottrell, at a meeting of the New York Section of the Society of Chemical Industry, held at the Chemists' Club, in New York City. The presentation address was delivered by Dr. C. F. Chandler, Senior Past President of the Society. The medal was awarded for the recipient's work in the electrical precipitation of suspended particles in gases. Dr. Cottrell's career, which is so familiar to members of the Institute, was sketched by Dr. Chandler. He told at some length of the experiments leading up to the final solution of electrostatic precipitation, which has done so much to solve the problem of smelter smoke. The principal interest in Dr. Cottrell's speech of acceptance lay in his remarks about helium, the production of which has been so reduced in cost that it has practically supplanted the use of hydrogen for inflation purposes in war balloons. He said: "Two or three weeks after war was declared in 1917, Dr. R. B. Moore attended a meeting of the American Chemical Society in Kansas City. At the general session, Mr. Seibel of the University of Kansas, gave a paper on krypton and xenon in some of the natural gases of Kansas. At the end of his paper, he expressed regret that at such a time, when everyone was thinking of war problems, his paper was of a purely scientific nature and had no practical bearing on the war. Dr. Moore immediately got up and said that he did not agree with Mr. Seibel. The presence of helium in those wells could, and should, have a very practical bearing on the war, as this gas could be extracted in quantity from the natural gas and used for balloons and Zeppelins. He pointed out some of the natural advantages of helium over hydrogen, and quoted Sir William Ramsey's letter advocating the use of helium for airships. The general attitude of those present was one of scepticism, so he finally asked Dr. Cady for his opinion who stated that he believed-the thing could be done, but was very doubtful whether it could ever be made practical on account of the cost." Dr. Moore in a letter wrote: "That same day I talked to Dr. Parsons, who was present at the meeting and was returning to Washington almost immediately. I told him what had happened, and that I believed the matter should be taken up by the Bureau at once and presented to the War Department. He promised to do this as soon as he got to Washington; and I know that he did take the matter up with other Bureau officials." Dr. Cottrell continued in part: News of Ramsey's suggestions also reached this .country through other channels and eventually came to our attention. Professors Satterly and Patterson of the University of Toronto commenced experimentation of the subject Jan. 1, 1916. Col. G. A. Burrell, who headed the research department of the Gas Warfare Service at the American University, tells me that Cady's experiments had also suggested similar possibilities to him.

For a period of several years, and in a large number of oases, the Metallurgical Laboratories of the New Mexico School of Mines were employed in umpire work. During this time many important local problems mere solved. Against the results of careful chemical analyses of ores, assay-returns mere often checked. In many cases the assay-methods of mine and custom-smelter were compared, and both often found faulty for the ore concerned. A wide range of ores was covered. Many of the chemical analyses and assays were made by Dr. F. C. Lincoln, Professor of Metallurgy, now of the Montana State School of Mines. A varied series of instructive assays was prepared by Prof. R. B. Brinsmade, now of the West Virginia State University. Single assays and given series of tests were undertaken by H. T. Goodjohn, now chief chemist to the Cia. Metalurgica de Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico; by H. J. Hub-bard, now superintendent of the Butters Divisadero Mines, Jocoro, San Salvador, C. A.; by E. D. Morton, now superintendent of the Arizona & Nevada Copper Mining Co., at Lunning, Nev.; and by A. W. Edelen, now superintendent of the Angangueo Unit of the American Smelting & Refining Co., in Michoacan, Mexico. A critical comparison of assay-methods that were found to be followed in the case of certain gouge-ores mined in the Mimbres range in New Mexico, and about which there had been much controversy, was made by D. F. Riddell, then Acting Professor of Assaying, and now superintendent of the Providentia Mines Co. of Parral, in Chihuahua, Mexico. To him is due the credit of much that is contained in the following notes, which he has generously permitted to be used in advance of the publication of the complete results.

Under the hot, baking sun, engineers at the AEC's Nevada Test Site have been busy for several years in the sinking of 48-in. diam shafts to depths varying anywhere from 1800 to 4800 ft below the surface. In so doing these men have evolved several new techniques which should be of interest to the mining industry. Surface Facilities Designed For Speed: "Expediency plus efficiency" is a key phrase at the Site. Because of the relatively short duration of actual mining operations, all equipment has been packaged to decrease time and cost of "set up" and "take down". The headframe, designed specifically for use over 48-in. cased shafts, can be erected or dismantled within 48 hours. The back legs are pinned and hinged to the front legs for ease of installation and, when dismantled, for movement to another site with a minimum of delay.

Twenty years ago, W. T. Burns, in his paper presented at the Butte Meeting of the Institute,' discussed the general scheme then in use in the electrolytic copper refinery of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. at Great Falls, Mont., for removing impurities from tank-room electrolyte and controlling its acid content. Since then marked changes have taken place in copper-refinery practice at Great Falls. The electrolytic copper refinery in use in 1913 has been replaced by a new and entirely modern plant capable of producing up to 27,000,000 Ib. of cathode copper per month. With the building of the new plant in 1916, the treatment of converter anodes was discontinued. At first the substitution of refined anodes for converter anodes resulted in a decrease in the impurity content of the anodes, but as time went on, changes in metallurgical practices at the smelter resulted in substantial increases in the impurity content of the anodes. The leaching of the silver slime to remove copper before shipment to Raritan for treatment further added to the purification problem. The fact that the scheme of purifying electrolyte which Mr. Burns described in his paper has proved adequate for our needs under a wide variation of conditions speaks well for its essential soundness. Method of Purification Briefly, the method adopted for purifying tank-room electrolyte at Great Falls has been as follows: Each day a certain volume of tank-room electrolyte is run off and sent to the purification plant, where it is boiled down to approximately 46' 136. The concentrated electrolyte is then sent to crystallizing tanks where the bulk of the copper is crystallized out as copper sulfate. The mother liquor is then passed through insoluble anode tanks to remove the last of the copper and most of the arsenic and antimony. It is then either returned to the tank room direct or boiled down to 55' Bé, the iron and nickel salts crystallized out and the mother liquor returned to the tank-room circuit as restored acid. Prior to 1930 all of the evaporating was done in lead-lined tanks 13 ft. in diameter by 4.5 ft. deep, provided with lead heating coils through which steam at 30 lb. gage pressure was circulated.

This regiment, originally known as the First Engineer Reserve, will be remembered as the one recruited in New York City through the efforts of the Joint Military Committee of the National Engineering Societies. It was sent to England in August, 1917, and, after a few clays, forwarded to France and attached for immediate service to the British Expeditionary Force, without any opportunity for further field-training. This circumstance has led in some quarters to the impression that the regiment was one of engineers and mechanics merely, and had never been drilled under arms; whereas, in fact, it had received such instruction at Fort Totten for some time previous to its embarkation. It is true that in the famous affair of the German counter-attack after Byng's victory near Cambrai, the men of the Eleventh Engineers fought with pick-axes and tools, as well as with rifles borrowed from dead or wounded soldiers; but that was because they had left their own arms in camp, while doing the railroad-building work to which they had been detailed. The accomplishment of that work is really more remarkable than the behavior of the men under a German surprise-attack. It was before that counter-attack, and immediately after Byng's advance, that Field-Marshal Haig issued his despatch, announcing that the engineers deserved as much credit for that victory as the infantry, having performed miracles in keeping the railway transportation up to the fighting line. Indeed, the subsequent scrimmage, of which so much has been said, was ?Date possible only by the extraordinary position of the engineers at the very front, instead of in the rear, as might have been expected of them. A letter recently received from an officer of the regiment says: We have only recently been receiving the New York papers of early December, in which our regiment seems to have received much favorable mention. The stories were, in the main, true. Our men behaved themselves creditably, and certain of the officers received special mention for valor. Two of our 2d lieutenants were pro-moted to 1st lieutenant rank by special orders of General Pershing for "gallant con-duct in action," and about four others would have been decorated by the British,

Forty years ago A. A. Griffith developed a theory explaining why brittle materials displayed such low tensile strengths.' He based his views on two points. First, he found himself compelled to assume that all brittle materials are replete with flaws, cracks, and other defects that act, although quite invisible, as large stress raisers. Second, he applied the "theorem of minimum potential energy," which says that the total potential energy of a system must pass from the unbroken to the broken condition by a process involving a continuous decrease in potential energy. By this means he satisfactorily accounted for the noted low strength of such solids and also for the wide spread obtained in experimental measurement of these strengths. So successful has the theory been that it is favored by some to this day. Unfortunately this theory is of limited use beyond the explanation of these two noted phenomena and it is keenly felt that a better theoretical insight into the physics of the fracturing process is needed as the volume of experimental evidence accumulates. The author proposes in the following to build on the fundamentally sound concepts of Griffith and, with the help of increased theoretical knowledge over that available to Griffith, develop a mechanism for frac-ture which will provide far greater understanding of the experimental evidence accumulated to date than is possible from the original Griffith idea. THE GRlFFlTH THEORY Very little progress indeed can be made without accepting the first postulate of Griffith which supposes all brittle solids to be full of microcracks. It would be difficult indeed to find a better mechanism for the small strength of such brittle materials, in conjunction with the fact that the energy that must be expended for comminution is by no means small. The postulate of the existence of the microcracks permits the breakup of the various bonds a few at a time by concentrating the stress at the tip of the progressing crack, while the total energy expended is the same as if they all had been ruptured simultaneously. The only flaw in the argument is that no reasonable explanation has been proposed to account for the genesis of such cracks. Indeed their very presence is in violation of the Griffith second postulate, the potential energy theorem. This theorem is straightforward for isothermal processes, and, in spite of Griffith, there is some doubt that treating the problem isothermally is legitimate. The surface energy of bodies is a free energy, not a potential energy as stated by Griffith, and the production of new surface free energies is not necessarily an isothermal process. There is ample evidence to the contrary. Generally speaking, if heating a body increases its surface area, then, by virtue of Le Chatelier's principle, any increase of that area by other means will tend to lower its surface temperature. Lord Kelvin calculated the actual cooling that resulted in drawing out a film of liquid.2 R. A. Houston calculated the surface cooling that resulted in stretching a metal wire.3 These calculations were made by applying the Carnot cycle to the process and evaluating the thermodynamics thereof. IRREVERSIBILITY OF THE FRACTURING PROCESS While Griffith was very careful not to say so, the impression gained from studying his papers is that he considered the fracturing process as reversible, that is, a succession of quasi-equilibrium states. There is ample evidence that it is not. The indication that the new surfaces produced by the propagation of a crack are cooler than the original body points to an irreversible heat flow from the interior to the new surfaces to equalize the temperatures. If the process be reversible, any crack accidentally formed should immediately close up as, in the absence of any strain energy, the potential energy would thereby be lowered. The fact that they do not, constitutes a paradox. Such paradoxes are nothing new where certain phenomena that propagate from minuscule nuclei are assumed to be reversible. Such is, for instance, the condensation of a pure saturated vapor that is suddenly chilled by adiabatic expansion. At the beginning the tiny droplets that are formed should be only a few angstroms in size, but the vapor pressure at such droplets is so high that they should evaporate at once. A similar situation arises if a saturated pure solution becomes super-saturated upon cooling; the first tiny crystal nuclei should dissolve as fast as

THE period of new oil discoveries in Illinois began in February 1937, when The Pure Oil Co. found the Clay City field the forerunner of a number of limestone pools. The importance of the area was emphasized greatly in December of the same year with the discovery of excellent sand production by The Carter Oil Co. at Louden and in June, 1938, with the discovery by The Texas Co. of the Salem field producing from two sands and one lime- stone horizon. By September, 1939, new discoveries in Illinois were estimated to have added, under prevailing production practices, some 500,000,000 barrels to the crude oil reserves of the United States and to have produced to that date some 63,000,000 barrels with daily production passing the 300,000-barrel mark by Sept. 1.

THE WORLD Coal, as a source of energy and as a source of coke for the smelting of iron ore, has contributed significantly to the development of every major industrial nation of the world A number of other materials-oil, natural gas, wood, waste materials, water, and, in some applications, nuclear materials -can be used satisfactorily for the generation of heat and energy, but no generally acceptable and economic substitute has been found to supplant coke in iron ore smelting in conventional blast furnaces. In the development of many nations, coal provided the initial source of energy for industrialization Although coal provided more than 60% of the world's energy each year between 1902 and 1929, oil and natural gas have surpassed it as a source of energy in more recent years (Ref. 38, pp. 439, 441). Despite the rapid rise in importance of other fuels, a considerable amount of the total energy consumed is still supplied by coal. In 1972, coal supplied 32.1 % of the total world energy (Ref. 49, pp. 2-3). To produce this energy, 2.4 billion metric tons of coal were consumed-a 16.0% increase over the amount consumed in 1962. A further worldwide increase in the amount of coal used to supply energy is projected. According to Dr. Karlheinz Bund (Ref. 37, p 145), by the year 2000 world coal consumption could amount to 5 billion mt. Coal Resources and Production The world's coal resources are estimated to be about 10,872 billion mt. Of this amount, 1,297 billion mt are classified as measured reserves (Ref. 50, p. 57). In Table 13.A.1 the estimates of measured reserves and total resources, recent production, and the ratio of measured reserves to production of major coal-producing countries are shown. About 90% of the world's total coal resources are estimated to be in the USSR, the United States, and China. The United States ranks second in the world in coal resources, but in measured reserves, it ranks first. Because of the difference in rate at which available coal resources are being exploited, the ratio of measured reserves to actual production varies widely among areas and countries. France and East Germany have the lowest reserve to production ratios, 49.5 and 60.1, respectively. In Mexico, where currently less than 5 million mtpy of coal are produced, the ratio is 1257 For all countries producing more than 200 million mtpy of coal (except East Germany), the ratio ranges from 350 to 670. For the United States, the ratio is 669.7. In Table 13.A.2, distribution of the world's coal resources by area is shown. To determine the applicubility of stainless steels fov equipment items which would be exposed only to zinc vapor, the corvosion resistance of several stainless steels to zinc vapor was investigated in 500-hr- exposuves at 900° C. Two austenilic stainless steels, Types 304 and 3-17, suffered severe intergranular attack. Loss of nickel from these steels and micro-probe crnalyses indicated the probable formation of low-melting zinc-rich phases. Good vesistance to attack by zinc vapor, as determined by metallo-9-rpaphic excr)rtination and physical testing, Loas exhibited by Type 405 stainless steel, a jevvitic steel. Type 440C stainless steel, a tnartensitic steel, although suffering considevable loss in weight, was not structurally weakened. At Argonne National Laboratory liquid zinc and zinc-rich alloys are being employed as solvent media in pyrometallurgical processes under development for recovering and purifying discharged reactor-fuel materials.' Because of the high solubility of most metals in liquid zinc,' there are few metals which can serve as container materials for liquid zinc at temperatures much above the melting point. The poor corrosion resistance of the common metals and alloys to molten zinc has been discussed by Eldred.3 DeKany, Lavendel, and Burris4 tested some of the less-common alloys of the nonrefractory metals and found that they also have poor resistance to attack by liquid zinc and Zn-Mg solutions. Of the metallic materials, only some of the refractory metals such as tantalum, tungsten, and molybdenum and their alloys have shown resistance to attack by liquid zinc.4-7 In the process-development work at Argonne National Laboratory, tantalum and tungsten vessels have been used to hold liquid-zinc alloys. These vessels are housed in stainless-steel equipment, principally to permit maintenance of an inert atmosphere and operation at various pressures. In this experimental work, it has often been observed that Type 304 stainless steel suffers little attack by zinc vapor at temperatures up to about 800 °C. In contrast, severe attack occurs in areas where zinc condenses as a liquid. The extent of attack by zinc vapor on several stainless steels was investigated because there are possible useful applications of stainless steel for equipment items which would be exposed only to attack by zinc vapor. These applications include, for example, housings around processing equipment as indicated above and vapor lines leading from zinc stillpots or retorts to condensers. EXPERIMENTAL EQUIPMENT AND PROCEDURE The experimental procedure consisted in exposing stainless-steel test coupons to static zinc vapor for 500 hr at a temperature of about 900°C. The apparatus, shown in Fig. 1, consisted of a 12-in.-long closed tantalum tube jacketed in Type 304 stainless steel to prevent oxidation of the tantalum. The aim of this paper is to point out the various ways in which design is taught in standard four-year mining engineering curricula in American colleges and universities; to discuss the reasons apparently justifying the great diversity of procedure that exists along this line; and to indicate possible solutions to the difficulties now attending the teaching of design. A study was made of typical four-year mining engineering curricula in 15 colleges and universities of the United States (Table I). Great diversity in content of the various design courses, if taught as described, became apparent immediately. It appeared that it might be both interesting and instructive if the cause for this colorful variety could be found. Was the cause local mining conditions, departmental individuality, or actual necessity? Study of the school catalogues revealed that the various design courses could be classified into two fairly distinct types; namely, (I) those dealing with mine equipment or structures, and (2) those dealing with underground layout of mine workings. It seemed reasonable to label the first type of course "mining design" and the second type "mine design." Some such distinction must have been in the minds of mining educators, for we find both names (i.e., mine design and mining design) used to designate the design courses included in the various mining curricula Unhappily, the name and the apparent content of such courses do not, in all instances, conform to the classification made here, although in most instances such conformation does obtain (Table I). It is possible that in the exceptional case the method of teaching a design course, and consequently the content of it, may have been changed at some time without change in the name of the course. Apparently only 3 of the 15 schools made an effort to cover both types of design in their curricula (Table I). Two other schools did not list or describe any course of study that could with certainty be taken as a design course. Of the remaining 10 schools, 9 gave a mining-design type of course and one gave a strictly mine-design type. Obviously, the preponderance of design courses afforded are of the mining-design type. Why? To answer this question, it is necessary to make a study of the prerequisites for the two types of design courses taught. In all schools the design courses were taught in the senior year; in eight, design was taught throughout both semesters; in two, it was taught during the first semester only; and in three it was taught during the second semester only. Consequently, excepting the last three cases noted, it is obvious that all prerequisites for a design course should be completed by the end of the junior year PREREQUISITES What are the probable prerequisites for the different kinds of design courses as they appear to be taught? Let us take first the case of the mine-design type of course, having to do with layout of underground workings. Here it would seem that logical

THE aim of this paper is to point out the various ways in which design is taught in standard four-year mining engineering curricula in American colleges and universities; to discuss the reasons apparently justifying the great diversity of procedure that exists along this line; and to indicate possible solutions to the difficulties now attending the teaching of design. A study was made of typical four-year mining engineering curricula in 15 colleges and universities of the United States (Table I). Great diversity in content of the various design courses, if taught as described, became apparent immediately. It appeared that it might be both interesting and instructive if the cause for this colorful variety could be found. Was the cause local mining conditions, departmental individuality, or actual necessity? Study of the school catalogues revealed that the various design courses could be classified into two fairly distinct types; namely, (I) those dealing with mine equipment or structures, and (2) those dealing with underground layout of mine workings. It seemed reasonable to label the first type of course "mining design" and the second type "mine design." Some such distinction must have been in the minds of mining educators, for we find both names (i.e., mine design and mining design) used to designate the design courses included in the various mining curricula. Unhappily, the name and the apparent content of such courses do not, in all instances, conform to the classification made here, although in most instances such conformation does obtain (Table I). It is possible that in the exceptional case the method of teaching a design course, and consequently the content of it, may have been changed at some time without change in the name of the course. Apparently only 3 of the 15 schools made an effort to cover both types of design in their curricula (Table I). Two other schools did not list or describe any course of study that could with certainty be taken as a design course. Of the remain¬ing to schools, 9 gave a mining-design type of course and one gave a strictly mine-design type. Obviously, the preponderance of design courses afforded are of the mining-design type. Why? To answer this question, it is necessary to make a study of the prerequisites for the two types of design courses taught. In all schools the design courses were taught in the senior year; in eight, design was taught throughout both semesters; in two, it was taught during the first semester only; and in three it was taught during the second semester only. Consequently, excepting the last three cases noted, it is obvious that all prerequisites for a design course should be completed by the end of the junior year. PREREQUISITES What are the probable prerequisites for the different kinds of design courses as they appear to be taught? SOUTH AFRICAN MILLING PRACTICE All modern South African gold plants operate primarily on the principle of exposing the gold particles in the ore by fine grinding and then cyaniding the total pulp. Although there are minor variations and occasional depart- ures from established practices among the fifty gold mines in South Africa, the normal plant operations proceed as follows. After removal of waste rock by hand sorting (15Y0 on average) the ore is crushed in cone crushers to minus 1/2 inch and then ground to approximately 75% minus 200 mesh by milling with either rod, ball or pebble mills as primary units and pebble mills for the secondary grind. Classification in both circuits is almost invariably conducted with 20" cyclones of 30" or larger diameter. Gravity concentration in the milling circuit followed by barrel amalgamation of the concentrates is practiced in 70Y0 of the plants, particularly where the ore grade is high. A slightly better overall recovery is obtained than with direct cyanidation, but additional handling is involved. Johnson cylinder s , plane tables or belt concentrators, all lined with suitable types of molded rubber riffles, are used for this purpose. At all mines, cyanidation is the main process, usually conducted by continuous treatment in Pachuca tanks and pulp separation with rotary drum filters. Cyanide solutions contain about 0.0 1570 NaCN and require a protective alkalinity of 0.02070 CaO. Precipitation of the gold from cyanide solution is exclusively by zinc dust and lead nitrate using the Merrill-Crowe system in conjunction with Stellar pressure filters. The zinc precipitate is smelted, generally after a preliminary concentration by sulfuric acid, in electric furnaces, mostly submerged arc types, with a silica and borax flux, yield- ing a bullion of 8870 gold, 9% silver, and 370 base metals. The gold content of the ore varies between 0.20 and 1.0 oz Troy per short ton and extraction efficiency ranges from 9570 to 9870. In general, 4070 of the gold output is recovered by amalgamation and 6070 by cyanidation; but in some cases, it is entirely by cyanidation. Flotation has not been adopted for gold extraction as it has not proved as efficient as cyanidation. It is, however, often applied to ores containing higher than 1% sulfur for the recovery of pyrite for sulfuric acid production. On the eastern side of the Witwaters rand Basin, "run-of -mine milling” was introduced in 1960 and in three of the four mills in this area both sorting and crushing have been eliminated. The ore received from the shafts is conveyed to storage silos and then fed by Williamson automatic feed controllers to pebble mills ranging from 12 to 14 feet diameter, and 16 to 20 feet long. The pebble mills operate in closed circuit with 42 inch cyclones and the slime produced is thickened and cyanided in the conventional manner. No selective

MUELLER and Knott' have reported that Ti2Cu has the Si2Mo-type (Cllb) structure. The lattice parameters of Ti2Cu and the positions of the titanium and copper atoms are given by them as follows: ao = 2.944A; co = 10.786A 6 atoms per unit cell: 2 Cu (a) 000; 1/2: 1/2, 1/2 4 Ti (e) 002; 1/2, 1/2, 1/2 + z 00 -2 ; 1/2. 1/2. 1/2- z where z = 0.341 We have found eight other binary compounds which appear to be isostructural with Ti2Cu. All of them involve the combination of a titanium group element with a copper group element or a titanium group element with palladium. The compounds and their lattice parameters are given in Table I. The alloy samples were prepared by arc melting metals having a purity of 99.9 pct or better. They were homogenized for 72 hr at 900°C in evacuated capsules and quenched in tap water. Filings were prepared, and these were reannealed for 4 hr at 700°C, also in evacuated tubes. The lattice parameters were determined by a least squares Bnalysis of the back reflection lines of patterns made with cobalt radiation. It was not possible to make a precise determination of the lattice parameters of Zr2Au because the filings underwent rapid oxidation at room temperature. The evidence supporting the large tetragonal cell containing 6 atoms involves the presence of the reflections 002, 101, 004, 112, 114, 202, and other reflections with higher indices for which I = 3n. Three or more reflections corresponding to these indices, which cannot be indexed on the basis of a small body-centered tetragonal cell containing 2 atoms, are observed in the patterns of all of the compounds listed in Table I. They are strongest and most numerous when the components have large differences in their atomic scattering factors, as is the case in Ti2Pd, Zr2Cu, and Hf2Cu. The values of the z parameter should be regarded as approximate They were selected on the basis of the best agreement between the observed intensities of two pairs of closely spaced powder pattern lines (004): (112) and (114): (202) and the corresponding intensities calculated for several values of z. An ordering scheme was assumed in which titanium, zirconium, or hafnium atoms occupy the titanium positions of Ti2Cu, and copper, silver, palladium, or gold atoms occupy the copper positions. Calculated and observed intensities of the aforementioned lines and the other lines of the patterns are in satisfactory agreement, but a refinement of the z parameters and a final confirmation of the ordering arrangement must await a more detailed study.
