THE Pittsburgh is one of the most important coal beds of Ohio. It was the last of the great coal beds to be worked extensively in that State, has the largest area of virgin coal, and will in all probability be the last of the great deposits to be exhausted. The line of outcrop sweeps nearly southwest in a sinuous line from Jefferson County on the north to Lawrence on the south, a distance on a bee-line of at least 150 miles. (Fig. 1.) The maximum width of the area under which this coal is due is about 55 miles, but in most places it is less than half that and in the two southern counties it is in places restricted to narrow ridges. As the map shows, the coal is thin or wanting along many miles of the line of outcrop. The large deposits form three separate areas, which, in order of their importance, are generally known as (1) the Belmont, (2) the Federal Creek, and (3) the Gallia fields.

Vermiculite is a nonmetallic mineral of the mica family, probably related to biotite mica. Its occurrence has been noted at numerous places in the United States and in some foreign countries, but it can be said that vermiculite is of only moderately wide distribution. A laboratory and field survey of over 60 deposits in the United States by F. 1;. Schundler & Co., of Joliet, Ill., indicates that the purest deposit represented in this survey is on the property of the Zonolite Company at Libby, Montana The Zonolite Company is commercially active and the vermiculite it produces is sold as Zonolite. Hereafter, in this report, the word "Zonolite " will be used to designate the vermiculite produced by the Zonolite Company. Values given herein to Zonolite are peculiar to the vermiculite produced from the Zonolite Company's deposits. References to " vermicullite," are to he interpreted as covering the broad field covered by the Schundler survey. Composition and Characteristics of Vermiculite Vermiculite is an aluminum-nmgnesium silicate. The following typical analysis is published by the United States Bureau of Standards: silica, 41 per cent; iron oxide, 7; aluminum oxide, 18; magnesium oxide, 21; calcium oxide, 1; alkalis (sodium and potassium), 1; moisture, 11. Vermiculite breaks down into platelike formation in crushing and grinding operations. Its cleavage is basal. Crude, screened, dry Zonolit,e weighs between 80 and 90 Ib. per cubic foot; its specific gravity is 2.8 and its specific heat is approximately 2. The fusion point of Zonolit'e is 2462" F. Crude vermiculite contains between 7 and 9 per cent of chemically combined moisture. The instantaneous introduction of crude Zonolite into an expansion furnace at a temperature of between 1800" and 2000" F. transforms the combined moisture into steam, which in an effort to liberate itself forces all explosive expansion of the platelike crude material

The recurrence of mine-fires in Nevada during the past decade is not only a matter of interest, but also one of considerable concern to engineers and mine-managers. The more important fires may be enumerated as follows: Forman Shaft fire, Gold Hill, April 21, 1903; shaft-house, machinery, and shaft destroyed; loss estimated at $50,000; cause unknown. Union Shaft fire, Virginia City, July 14, 1904; shaft-house, machinery,and shaft in part destroyed; loss estimated at $100,-000; cause of fire stated as the careless throwing of a match in the rope-house. Sutro Tunnel fire, Virginia City, Jan. 27, 1909; 700 ft. of tunnel-timbering destroyed, and direct damage of $10,000; cause " probably electric wires." Belcher Shaft fire, Gold Hill, Aug. 9, 1910; shaft-house destroyed, machinery ruined, and upper part of shaft damaged; damage, $25,000; no cause given. Belmont Mine fire, Tonopah, Feb. 23, 1911; fire started ill winze; 17 men killed. Giroux Mine fire, Kimberly, Aug. 23, 1911; fire originated in shaft-station from unknown cause; 7 men killed, and $34,-521 damage caused. (Note 1.—On June 11, 1912, some time after the present paper was written, a fire broke out in the pump-room on the 2475 station of the Ward shaft, Virginia City. This fire was caused by the short-circuiting and exploding of the starting-switch on No. 5 pump. The oil in the switch was scattered about and set fire to the timbers and lagging of the pump-room. The pump-man in charge notified the surface, and the electric current was shut off. A hose was then turned on the fire, but the dense smoke drove the attendant out. DURING the last week in April, cards were sent out from New York to Institute members affiliated with the Mining, Geology, and Geophysics Div. The cards requested recipients to indicate their main technical interest, within the division, i.e., mining, or geology, or geophysics. The reason for the cards is simple. Within the Institute more than 8000 have expressed either primary or secondary interest in this division. However, there is no way to determine the technical association stimulating this interest.

The Georgetown mining district is located in Deerlodge county, Mont., about 20 miles west of Anaconda. It lies along the divide between the headwaters of Warm Springs creek, draining eastward, and Flint creek, flowing west and north through the Philipsburg valley. The actual divide is formed by Cable mountain, a narrow ridge running north and south, terminating to the south in low hills overlooking Georgetown lake, and to the north in a high, rugged plateau that falls off to the west to the wide valley of Flint creek. On the eastern, or Warm Springs, slope of Cable mountain is the Cable mine, with the Hidden Lake mine a few miles north. On the western slope is the Southern Cross group, with smaller mines, the Twilight, Cincinnati, Red Lion, and Big Bill, at intervals to the northward. The Georgetown mines lie in the hills south of Cable mountain; the Philipsburg mines, of which the Granite Mountain, Bimetallic, Hope, and Trout are the chief, form a separate group to the north, overlooking Flint Creek valley and Philipsburg. (See Fig. 1.) The region ranges in elevation from 5,000 to 9,000 ft. It is, with the exception of the lower valleys, well timbered with small fir and pine, although Cable mountain and the higher summits to the northward rise slightly above timber line. The main valleys have the smooth contours of glaciation, and their mouths are frequently choked with morainal deposits. General Geology. In a very general way the valley of Flint creek coincides in this region with the boundary between the pre-Cambrian slates of western Montana and the folded Palaeozoic rocks of the Rocky Mountain system. The great limestone formations of the Carboniferous and Devonian, lying at flat dips, extend from Anaconda well toward the head of Warm Springs creek, but on the divide the Cambrian appears, closely folded and intruded

BITUMENS have been defined by Abraham1 as substances of variable color, hardness, and volatility; composed principally of 'saturated hydrocarbons, substantially free from oxygenated bodies, sometimes associated with mineral matter; the nonmineral constituents being fusible and largely soluble in carbon disulphide. The principal bituminous substances other than petroleums known to commerce are: (1) native asphaltites, such as gilsonite, grahamite, and glance pitch, distinguished by their hardness and relatively high fusing point; (2) native asphaltic pyrobitumens, such as wurtzilite, distinguished by their infusibility and comparative insolubility in carbon disulphide; (3) mineral waxes, such as ozokerite, distinguished by their high content of crystallizable paraffins; (4) native asphalts, containing varying amouqts of mineral matter, distinguished by the comparative absence of crystallizable paraffins; and (5) bituminous residues obtained from the distillation of petroleum. GILSONITE Gilsonite, a black native asphaltite 98 to 99.9 pct pure, characterized by a hardness of 2 (Mohs), a specific gravity of 1.01 to 1.10, and melting point of 230° to 400°F (K and S), is mined commercially only in northeastern Utah. It occurs in parallel, almost vertical veins, from a few inches to 18 ft wide and 8 to 30 miles long, that cut across the Tertiary limestone and shale of the broad Uinta Basin. The bitumen is believed to have been distilled by heat from oily material in the underlying Green River shale. At the Rainbow mine of the American Gilsonite CO.,† the gilsonite, formerly extracted in an opencut by a system of slopes and benches, is now mined by shafts and horizontal drifts. NUMEROUS investigations of chemical diffusion in a brass have been made and the results are collected in several places.1-3 This work has been mainly concerned with the determination of the chemical diffusivity as a function of composition and temperature. In 1947 Smigelskas and Kirken-dall&apos; showed that zinc and copper diffuse at different rates in face-centered-cubic brass, and since then, a number of efforts have been made to determine the intrinsic diffusivities of zinc and copper in this alloy.1, 5-9 Horne and Mehl8 in particular have recently determined the intrinsic diffusivities as functions of temperature and composition using sandwich-type couples and inert markers. Inman et al." also have determined the intrinsic diffusivities in homogeneous alloys using tracer techniques. When the present work was started, no information of this type was available. Consequently, measurements of the intrinsic diffusivities were made as a function of temperature at a constant composition of 28 atomic pct Zn with vapor-solid diffusion couples where the zinc was diffused into the diffusion couple from the vapor phase. The application of these couples to the study of diffusion in a: brass has been described previously.0,7 The temperature dependence of the intrinsic diffusivities was found to follow the relation D, = A, exp(-Hi/RT) and the values of Hzn, and Hcu, were found to be closely the same. It is emphasized, however, that the chemical dif-fusivity (D = N1D2 + N2D1) is a composite diffusivity and does not necessarily follow this exponential form. It is usually found to do so within experimental error for substitutional alloys because the heats of activation of the intrinsic diffusivities generally are not greatly different.&apos;" Also, at the onset of this work, there was no information available concerning possible unequal diffusion rates of individual components and the existence of a Kirkendall effect in alloys with other than face-centered-cubic structures. Since then, two reports indicating a Kirkendall effect in body-centered-cubic ß brass have appeared. Landergren and Mehl" have published a note describing Kirkendall diffusion experiments with sandwich-type couples. Inman et a1.9 also find a Kirkendall effect in this alloy using the tracer technique. In the present work, several aspects of the Kirkendall effect in ß brass were further investigated using vapor-solid couples. Two different couples were used, one in which the zinc was diffused into the specimen from the vapor phase and the other in which the zinc was diffused out of the specimen into the vapor phase. Briefly, the existence of a Kirkendall effect is confirmed and it is found that Dzn/Dcu = 3 at about the 46 atomic pct composition in this alloy at 600°, 700°, and 800°C. As a result of the unequal diffusion rates of zinc and copper, volume changes occur and subgrain formation is observed in the diffusion zone. In addition, significant porosity is produced by the precipitation of supersaturated vacancies. Diffusion in this alloy is therefore outwardly similar to diffusion in a brass where these effects are also observed, a Brass Experimental Methods—The use of vapor-solid couples in studying diffusion in a brass has been described in previous articles.6,7 The method briefly consists of sealing a copper specimen with Kirkendall markers initially placed on its surface in an evacuated quartz capsule along with a large zinc source of fine a brass chips and then diffusing the zinc into the specimen through the vapor phase. The zinc concentration at the specimen surface rises rapidly enough to a value near that of the a brass source so that the surface concentration may be regarded as constant during diffusion. Under these boundary conditions, values of the chemical diffu-sivity may be obtained by applying the Boltzmann-Matano analysis to the concentration penetration curve, and the intrinsic diffusivities may be obtained from Darken&apos;s5 equations when the velocity of marker movement is known. The diffusion specimens were made from OFHC copper in the form of disks 3.2 cm diam and 0.5 cm thick with faces surface-ground parallel to within +0.001 cm. Markers in the form of fine alumina particles <0.0002 cm diam were placed on the specimen surface. These specimens were then sealed in quartz capsules along with enough a brass chips of a 30.0 atomic pct Zn composition to keep the source concentration from decreasing by more than 0.3 atomic pct Zn as a result of the loss of zinc to the specimen during diffusion. AS part of a program to investigate the diffusive properties of dilute ternary austenites, we have made a determination of the effects of cobalt on the activity of carbon in y iron. Samples of pure iron and Fe-Co alloys were equilibrated at 1000°C in controlled CO-C02 atmospheres, following the procedure of R. P. smith.&apos; The 0.010-in.-thick samples were analyzed for carbon by microcombustion analysis2 to give a set of isoactivity curves. The latter were converted to activity-coefficient (standard state at infinite dilution) plots by combination with Smith&apos;s data&apos; for the activity of carbon in pure iron measured in a CO-C02 mixture. Table I shows the composition of the base alloys used, while Fig. 1 shows the experimental results superimposed on a set of curves generated by the relation In the notation of Wagner,&apos; the interaction parameter is the second coefficient on the right, Eq. [I] adequately correlates the experimental points for those alloys which were prepared from electrolytic iron by arc-melting (2,4, and 7 pct Co). The results for the 10 pct Co alloy (supplied by Crucible Steel Co.) do not correlate with the others. In fact, the experimental points for this alloy correspond to an interaction parameter of It is possible that the interaction parameter is a function of concentration for large cobalt additions, but we are inclined to attribute the discrepancy to the presence of a significant amount of aluminum added to this alloy for deoxidation purposes (Table I). Preliminary measurements for the system Fe-C-A1 have indicated an interaction parameter of Which implies that the effect of aluminum in solution on the carbon activity is sixty times greater than the effect of an equal weight percentage of cobalt. These observations cast some doubt on the precision of the results of Chandhok, Hirth, and Dulis who used this same 10 pct alloy for their experiments, obtaining an interaction parameter of E = 2.2. There is considerable doubt as to the activity of a plane Fe-C system. Using a CH4-Ha mixture, Smith obtains cg = 6.1 for the effect of carbon on the activity of carbon in austenite, rather than the value of 8.9 given in Eq. [I]. The use of CHa-Ha mixtures has recently been questioned by Kaufman, Radcliff, and cohens who state that there is some possibility that other hydrocarbons are formed. Fortunately, the determination of the interaction parameter is not sensitive to the coefficient of Nc. For example, using the CHI-H2 results we obtain a value which is almost the same as that obtained using the CO-CO, results. The authors wish to thank Mr. E. J. Considerable interest has recently been developed in sage-brush oil because of its possible utilization as a flotation agent in the mining industry. A list of some of its physical properties, together with the method used in its extraction, may prove of interest at this time. Something over a year ago, a study of the essential oils in desert plants was begun in the Chemical Laboratory of the University of Nevada. None of the oils so far studied possess properties of special interest to engineers, except the oil of sage, Artemisia tridentata, which has exceptional power as a flotation agent. This plant, known as common sage brush, also called black sage, is widely distributed over the semi-arid West, being found quite generally on most of the dry plains and mountains west of Missouri. The method of extracting the oil followed in these experiments is very simple. The leaves, twigs and small branches are placed in an airtight drum, having a capacity of about 27 cu. ft. Steam is admitted through a number of ,small openings at the bottom of the retort, and the pressure maintained at 20 to 25 lb. per sq. in. for 3 hr. The escape of the steam from the retort is regulated by allowing it to pass through a stop-cock into a condenser. The water in the receiver is drawn off from time to time and the oil, which is insoluble and floats upon the water, is thus collected. At the end of 2 hr. most of the oil has been driven out, though traces continue to come over for a much longer time. By raising the pressure, the time required could probably be shortened and the yield increased, but the lack of laboratory equipment has prevented the carrying out of this experiment. The stock wood, bark and branches contain no oil, the distribution of the oil being limited to the leaves and young shoots. There is a seasonal variation in the amount of oil contained. Samples collected on different dates gave the following amount of oil: May 1, 0.42 per cent.; May 27, 0.6 per cent.; June 30, 0.72 per cent.; Aug. 1, 0.9 per cent.; Sept. 10, 1.0 per cent. The increase appears fairly constant from early spring, when the leaves first appear, until light frosts occur in the autumn. Part I. of this paper comprises a description of the experimental methods and a summary of the results by means of which the zinc-rich end of the iron-zinc diagram has been revised in the following ways: 1. Measurements of the solubility of iron in liquid zinc by several different sampling methods, leading to a relocation of the liquidus curve. 2. Microscopic, conductivity, and X-ray studies of the solid solubility of iron in zinc, which, together with thermal analyses, have resulted in new values for the solid solubility and the eutectic temperature and composition. 3. Heating and cooling curves, obtained by a refined differential method, leading to new locations for the two peritectic horizontals. In Part II of the paper the attempt is made to review all of the published work having a bearing on the constitution of the iron-zinc system, and to correlate the present results, and some recently published data

On numerous occasions rather positive indications were obtained that, for example, the solubility of iron in zinc was incorrectly represented on the current equilibrium diagrams. Van Stone mine area is situated at the head of Onion Creek on the northwest flank of Gillette Mountain, Stevens County, Washington. The di strict was found during World War I, but the mine did not come into production until 1952. Production to the end of 1965 was 2,242,960 tons of ore that yielded 10,700 tons of lead concentrates and 120,000 tons of zinc concentrates. The area is part of the Selkirk Mountains Zinc-Lead Belt, or Kootenay Arc, extending from near Revelstoke, British Columbia, to Colville, Washington. A thick but incomplete section of Paleozoic marine formations occurs in the Kootenay Arc and is overlain by marine and continental Mesozoic formations. Both are invaded by Late Mesozoic-Tertiary batholiths. The belt is characterized by open complex folding and extensive high-angle and local thrust faulting. Principal ore deposits occur in the highly deformed carbonate rocks of Cambrian age-the Maitlen (Laib) and Metaline formations. The Van Stone mine occurs along a steeply S-shaped fold lying between the Kaniksu Batholith on the west and the Rogers Mountain Fault, a northeast-trending fault on the west flank of the Gillette Mountain Anticline, to the southeast. The fold is cut by northeasttrending faults containing notoriously irregular lamprophyric, diabasic, and pebble dikes. The host rocks, lower Paleozoic dolomites, are decolorized, silicified, and silicated in the mine area. Jasperoid and tremolite are the common alteration minerals. Other gangue minerals are barite, pyrite, brucite, calcite, and, near the batholith, pyrrhotite. Ore minerals are galena, jamesonite, and sphalerite. Ore minerals occur in bunches and pods intergrown with tremolite and jasperoid. Zinc is roughly eight times more abundant than lead. The highest ore outcrops at 3870 feet elevation, and an undeterminable portion has been removed by glacial scour. The lowest drill hole penetration has reached 3220 feet elevation. Oxidation ranges up to several hundred feet in depth and may be most closely related to pre-glacial groundwater circulation. The area of the mine was completely over-ridden by Pleistocene continental glaciers, and the present erosion surface is nearly continuously blanketed by up to 150 feet of glacial outwash.

One session of the annual meeting of the American Society of Civil Engineers-the first since this society became a Founder society with representation on the Board of the United Engineering Society-was held on Jan. 17, 1917, in the Engineering Societies&apos; Building. Mr. Charles F. Rand, Past-President of this Institute, and President of the United Engineering Society, welcomed the new Founder society in the following words: "As one who has looked forward very earnestly to this clay, and who has made a modest effort in favor of the new arrangements, it is a peculiar satisfaction to be the representative of the Trustees of the United Engineering Society and to welcome you on the occasion of your first meeting in this building in which you now own&apos; a quarter interest. "&apos;As this is your annual meeting, I cannot take your time for extended remarks, yet it seems proper that I should call attention to a few facts respecting the United Engineering Society, with which you are now identified. "The United Engineering Society exists for the purpose of holding the legal title to certain of the property of the societies of Civil, Mining, Mechanical and Electrical Engineers and to act for them in certain matters. "The value of its property, including real estate, the Library and the Reserve and Endowment funds, exceeds two million dollars, all free and clear. "The total membership of the four Founder societies is 29,000 and the membership of associate societies is 23,000, making a grand total of 52,000 engineers who now have headquarters in this building.

Do you realize that American products of factory, farm and mine can be delivered to customers in foreign countries on terms which will build lasting trade? Do you realize the possibilities for bringing hack raw materials to extend your products and trade? We must all take off our coats and work to bring these American ships home to the people of every American interest and community. The manufacturer must think of customers in Latin America as being as accessible as those in the next state. The farmer must visualize ships carrying his wheat, cotton, breeding animals, dairy products and fruit to new world markets. The American boy must think of ships and foreign countries when he chooses a calling.

On April 17, the John Fritz Medal, the award of which the presiding officer, Col. John J. Carty, characterized as "the highest honor which can be conferred on an engineer in America," was presented to. J. Waldo Smith "for his most distinguished services in civil engineering, and particularly in connection with the work on the great aqueduct, which has just been completed." Col. Carty spoke very briefly of the origin of the Medal and the method of awarding it, mentioning the names of the twelve men to whom it has been awarded in former years, and then introduced Mr. Nelson P. Lewis, Vice-president of the American Society of Civil Engineers, and for many years Chief Engineer of the Board of Estimate of the City of New York, who is an old colleague and fellow-engineer of Mr. Smith. Mr. Lewis said, in part: Mr. Smith is so well known that an extended review of his professional activities will be unnecessary, but a brief outline of the development of a conspicuously successful hydraulic engineer may not be out of place. It would be difficult to find a better instance of the success which is quite sure to result from persistent devotion to all phases of a particular line of engineering work. It began in his boyhood, when, as a lad of 15, he eagerly availed himself of such opportunities as were afforded to help in the construction of a waterworks system for his home town in New England. It is well known that the hardness of metallic single crystals, like that of polycrystalline metals, increases during deformation (hardening by cold-work). It is also known that, as a consequence of deformation. the metallic material acquires an evident thermodynamic instability, revealed, for example, by the fact that the increased hardness gradually decreases with time, especially at elevated temperatures (softening by annealing). The temperature at which the stabilizing process begins is different for various metals, and for any metal it depends on the amount of deformation. Such stabilization of deformed metals may proceed in two different ways: through recovery, and through recrystallization. The former process allows the unstable deformed metal body to approach stability gradually and without visible change in the grain structure; the latter process, like an allotropic transformation, yields directly the undeformed stable "phase" in the form of new undeformed crystals, which, starting out of a certain number of nuclei, grow into and " consume " the deformed hard material. The extent of stability attainable through recovery is limited, especially if the deformation of the metal crystal or crystals involves not only the gliding along slip planes, but also the bending of the slip lamellae, or at any rate the bending of comparatively large parts of the crystal lattice. In such cases, for instance in bent single crystals or polycrystalline metals subjected to any deformation, recovery will not as a rule be able to restore the "istraight" undeformed lattice, and stability can be attained only by recrystallization; that is, by the consumption of the bent crystal lattice parts by new, undeformed crystals—a much more drastic process. It is evident that the part of the surplus free energy stored in deformed crystals, which is present in the form of the elastic energy of the bent lamellae, is in these instances not considerably involved

Notwithstanding the rapidly increasing use of copper, due to the extension of its applications within the last few years, the fact of its continued steady decline in price stands prominently forward. Nor have we far to look for the cause. The opening up of the vast copper-deposits of our Western States and territories is the metallurgical event of the last five years. We must not forget, in looking at the new field, the changed conditions under which the metallurgist must work, as compared with the previous history of copper-smelting. Until quite recently, the copper-plants of the country were few in number; and the concentration of industry implied in this circumstance, allowed many practices which must be considered as inapplicable to the conditions offered at the many mines which have of late become such important factors in our copper-production. Thus the old style of smelting the ore for matte in brick furnaces, involving great expense and time in their construction, while deservedly losing repute even in its old strongholds, in comparison with water-jacketed smelters, is still in some cases adhered to. But to put up such furnaces at Western mines would be out of the question. The large and continual need of brick for relining and repairs acts as an effectual bar, when such furnaces come into competition with the light, portable, and easily managed water-jacketed smelters of improved types. It is owing to the present unusual activity, manifested in the opening up of new copper-properties and the erection of plants for working them, that any improvement in furnace-construction is of especial interest and importance. INTRODUCTION CIVIL engineers are primarily interested in maximum core recovery. This is even more important in foundation work than in mining investigations where sludge samples are of some value. The soft materials, such as clay, gouge, or partially decomposed seams that are most readily ground up or washed away, are the materials that usually have the greatest influence on foundation and leakage conditions. Undisturbed samples of such materials should be obtained for detailed geological examination and laboratory tests. Therefore the attainable goal of sampling in connection with foundation investigations is the recovery of 99.9 pct of undisturbed core. FACTORS CAUSING CORE LOSSES The principal factors contributing to core losses are: (I) coring badly fractured or very soft material; (2) use of improperly designed coring equipment, including the use of bits of too small a diameter; (3) lack of the proper training and attitude on the part of the drillers and pertinent technical information on the part of the supervising personnel. Little can be done about the character of the material being cored but the other two factors contributing to unsatisfactory performance can be corrected. Although the title of this paper is the improvement and standardization of core barrels, it is believed that the drillers&apos; shortcomings and the lack of pertinent technical literature are more detrimental to good core recovery than either of the other factors. USES FOR LARGE DIAMETER CORE BARRELS It is well known that the use of larger diameter bits and core barrels generally produce better cores, particularly when sampling soft or broken material. The use of larger and larger bit diameters and the insistence on better core recovery is well demonstrated by the change in practices of the various districts of the Corps of Engineers. Today NX core is the smallest diameter commonly permitted for investigational work and the more active districts are using coring bits up to 6 in. in diameter, as well as 36 and 40-in. calyx rigs. The latter size has proved to be just as economical because it provides more room for core removal and cleanup operations. The use of large diameter cores to replace the driving and jacking methods of obtaining soil samples is also increasing. The 5 7/8-in. Denison sampler, developed by H. L. Johnson to obtain samples from soft formations, is one example. The principal uses for bits larger than NX are: sampling soils and semi-consolidated rock; sampling decomposed rock or rock with soft seams; sampling concrete; obtaining samples for laboratory tests; drilling drainage holes, and other miscellaneous work. Under the name given to this column, I almost feel obliged to write about some aspect of grinding, but I have decided instead to comment on the future of chemical processing. In recent years, I have seen a tremendous interest in extractive metallurgy develop among undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Utah. For example, of the 12 graduating seniors this year, over half seem to prefer extractive metallurgy to physical metallurgy. In particular, they seem to be most interested in hydrometallurgy, or chemical processing, obtaining industrial exposure to the phenomena they study via part-time employment at the Kennecott Research Center and the USBM Metallurgical Center in Salt Lake City. The stimulus has been generated by society itself. Many students are dedicated to the proposition that new technology can circumvent the destruction of our environment, a concept which provides considerable motivation. At the governmental level, the recent concern for the quality of our environment has created action in the area of chemical processing both through imposition of stringent air and water quality standards, and through increased funding for technological research in this area. The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) gave impetus to this movement when it pointed up the need for development and support of such disciplines as extractive metallurgy, particularly chemical processing, in a recent report on Mineral Science and Technology. The recommendations in the NAS report have prompted governmental action on many fronts, including the Bureau of Mines, and have also given rise to direct legislation in the form of two bills -H. R. 3492 and S. 635- presently before Congress to a mineral engineering education. The report recommends that chemical processing technology (more generally extractive metallurgy) be developed by both new engineering techniques and unconventional chemical techniques such as application of the chemistry of nonaqueous liquids to mineral systems.
