Quarrying and crushing 500 tons of limestone plus burning some 240 tons of limestone per day are the two initial phases in the production of borax, soda ash, sodium sulfate and related chemicals at Stauffer Chemical Co.'s plant in Westend, Calif. These processing steps have been upgraded in recent years by the installation of new primary and secondary crushers, an 8 x 340-ft rotary kiln plus kiln feed, control and cooling components-all designed and manufactured by Traylor Engineering and Manufacturing Division of Fuller Co. As a result of this new equipment, a new product- quicklime-has been added to the West End product family and considerable reductions have been realized in fuel and manpower costs.

In southwestern Pennsylvania 151 wells1 were completed during 1938, a total of 61 less than the preceding year. Of this number 81 were gas wells and 28 oil wells, which shows a considerable decline from 1937, when 108 gas wells and 64 oil wells were completed. However, 42 dry holes were drilled during 1938, which is two more than the previous year. Shallow Development—Gas No new extensions to old pools, or new wells that would indicate any substantial reserves, mere found during the year. However, a number of commercial wells and many dry holes were drilled to the Big Injun sand in Menallen township, Fayette County. One well had an initial open flow of 6 million cu. ft. In Rich Hill township, Greene County, one well producing, from the Big Injun sand, 2 million cu. ft. was brought in. Several other gas wells were completed in Shaler township, Alleghany County and Center township, Greene County, both of which had initial open flows of 1 million cu. ft. from the 30-ft. sand. Another well, in Aleppo township, Greene County, had an equal volume from the Gordon Stray sand. Oil Development has proceeded at a retarded rate because of the low price of Pennsylvania-grade crude. A total initial of only 205 bbl., an average of 7.3 bbl. per well, was developed. This is 1785 bbl. less than during 1937 and no new repressuring operations have been contemplated to prevent the declining production. The average price received for oil was $1.56 per barrel, with a high of $1.88 and a low of $1.34. This oil costs $1.94 per barrel2 to produce. The average price paid for Bradford

There was a decline in the Italian oil production in 1933 and also in the footage drilled. A total of about 194,500 bbl. of crude oil was produced in the Emilia district of northern Italy from the same fields in production as in 1932. New drilling to the extent of 80,700 ft. failed to find new production to compensate for the decline in old wells, and no new fields were discovered in spite of an active exploration campaign by the government-owned company A.G.I.P., which has just completed the first year of a five-year exploration program. This company drilled a total of about 33,000 ft. The majority of its tests were drilled in the Po Valley upon locations selected by geophysical methods. This company is changing over to the rotary system for all future wells. It produced about 16,600 bbl. of oil from wells near Salsomaggiore and in the Po Valley. The Petroli d'Italia, which operates the old fields of Montechino, Valleja and Gratera south of Piacenza, has been doing normal development drilling in the endeavor to extend its present fields. Also it was drilling two exploration wells in the Torino district. It drilled a total of about 13,930 ft. and produced approximately 12,645 bbl. of very high-grade oil (specific gravity about 0.765). The Societa Petrolifera Italiana was occupied chiefly in exploratory drilling in the endeavor to extend its producing fields at Salsomaggiore and at Vallezza, south of Parma. It was also drilling one exploration well at Rile dell7Olio near Voghera on the line Milan-Genoa. It drilled a total of 33,849 ft. and obtained a production from its two fields of 165,273 bbl. It also produced 123,220 gal. of casinghead gasoline from Vallezza field absorption plant.

Discussion of the paper Of NOEL CUNNINGHAM, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 99, March, 1915, pp. 601 to 608. C. H. POIRIER, New York, N. Y. (communication to the Secretary*). -Mr. Cunningham's paper, written from the standpoint of a stamp advocate, while commenting more or less favorably upon the installation of ball mills in the Vipond plant, does not, in my opinion, give as much emphasis to the comparatively new departure as the installation of ball mills in the place of stamps justifies. This discussion is based upon my personal and intimate practical work for several years with stamp mills, and for the past three years with Hardinge ball and pebble mills. The fact that the Vipond mine contains about equal quantities of the A and B classes of ore mentioned by Air. Cunningham, and the further fact that I have had a most intimate knowledge of the working of both classes of ore in the Porcupine district in stamp mills and ball mills, justifies upholding my final decision to use ball mills in the place of stamps, and defends my present further action in now increasing the present Vipond capacity by the addition of another 6-ft. Hardinge ball mill, in which action the directors of my company concur. This is one of the strongest evidences I can possibly offer in substantiation of my opinion that the ball mill exceeds the efficiency of the stamp, both in metallurgical and mechanical economy. It is hardly fair to compare a 100-ton per clay plant with a mill handling several times this amount, yet it is my belief that the cost per ton. of grinding in the ball mill is far less than that of any stamp mill in the district, where capacities run up to 400 tons per clay.

On April 1, 1937, Burma, formerly a province of the Indian Empire, was formally separated from India and became an independent unit of the British Commonwealth. In future, therefore, statistics of oil production in India will exclude Burma and those for Burma will be separately published. The last few years have been marked by noteworthy, almost spectacular, developments in the oil fields of Burma and the Punjab. In Burma these developments have been the proving of unexpected extensions of the existing fields and not the discovery of entirely new fields. The new extensions are important not only to Burma in giving a new lease of life to her fields, but also in general as stressing some interesting geological aspects hitherto neglected. Production The production of crude oil in Imperial gallons has been: Burma India 1934 254,760,070 67,265,210 1935 251,338,974 . 71,323,362 1936 265,656,393 69,241,504 1937 (eat.) 270,000,000 70,000,000 The Chindwin Fields.—The small field at Indaw continues to produce steadily about 3,000,000 gal. a year, but no really deep test has yet been successfully carried out and resources are thus not yet fully known. The remote location of the field, inaccessible except by river and situated 22 miles from the Chindwin 270 miles up that river from its junction with the Irrawaddy, has not encouraged active exploitation. The field is worked exclusively by the Indo-Burma Petroleum Co., Ltd. (I.B.P.), using now an automatic gas-lift system, and the company formerly refined the oil at a small refinery at Pantha on the river near by. The chief market was for kerosene in upper Burma. The refinery has now been closed. The oil is stored on the field during the low-water season

In view of the comprehensive accounts which have appeared in recent years of the oil fields of Burma, Assam and the Punjab,' this brief account will be restricted to an outline recapitulation of the position of the fields and a note on progress and developments in the last two or three years. It is actually peculiarly difficult to give an account of recent developrnents in the oil fields of the Indian Empire. The companies naturally are compelled to make a return to the Government of India of oil produced. These figures are published annually (about 10 months later) for each administrative district (which may include more than one field) where oil is produced, in the Annual Review of the Mineral Production of India (Records of the Geological Survey of India). Some details of recent developments may be given in the Annual Report of the Geological Survey of India (also published in the Records), but otherwise the companies tend to preserve a policy of extreme secrecy. Some of the smaller companies usually publish wellhead production month by month in order to encourage their shareholders when such figures are encouraging, but the larger companies do not necessarily even give figures of production in their annual reports to shareholders. Occasionally details of new tests, new machinery, and so on, leak out through the daily or weekly press in India, but, except for generalized official statements, no details :ire available as to the number of new wells, depths, wells abandoned, or other figures which are common property in other parts of the world. In the country itself the geologists preserve the utmost secrecy, and at times quite a serious system of espionage is developed. ONE of the most neglected fields for physicochemical education as well as for research is that of high-temperature phenomena. Few universities or technical schools give instruction in the physical chemistry of substances at high temperatures. On the contrary such instruction is almost entirely confined to the region between the freezing and boiling points of water. This field should be extended to a much wider range of temperatures, both low and high. Such an extension is logical, sound, feasible, and practical.

As this issue was being sent to press the $5 million industry- business phase of the fund campaign had passed the half- way mark toward its goal. Target date for the building program is 1960.

The testing of a new method for measuring pellet-bed temperatures in the traveling-grate or shaft furnace is presented in this paper. This method, using silver-palladium alloy wires as indicators, overcomes disadvantages existing in the methods based on the use of thermocouples which are costly and time-consuming. The authors have developed and tested a new method for measuring pellet-bed temperatures in the traveling-grate or shaft turnace through the use of silver-palladium alloy wires as indicators. This method overcomes the disadvantages of existing methods, which, based on the use of thermocouples, are generally costly and time-consuming. For example, in the case of the traveling-grate furnace, the installation of an instrumented pellet, together with its attached thermocouples, requires stopping the furnace, with resulting loss of production time. As for temperature measurement in the shaft furnace by the existing method, the movement of the shuttle-car feeder seriously interferes with both the actual insertion and the resulting distribution of continuously fed thermocouples. The authors have overcome these difficulties by using, as temperature indicators, a range of silver-palladium alloy wires that can be easily recovered, after firing at any desired location in a pellet furnace. Silver-palladium wires having specific melting points from 2000°F to 2500°F are enclosed in ceramic capsules. Each capsule is placed in a ni-chrome wire basket filled with a sample of green pellets, the baskets being the means for recovering the capsule after firing. After the encapsulated wires have been exposed to the firing cycle, the alloy wires are examined to determine the maximum temperatures attained by the pellet sample. This method gives accurate, rapid determinations of maximum temperatures attained during pellet induration in either the traveling-grate or shaft furnace The new method has the following advantages over existing methods: 1) it is less expensive; 2) no furnace downtime is required; 3) the testing units can, be made in quantity in advance; 4) measurements can be made in rapid succession at all desired locations; 5) measurements of maximum firing temperatures are more accurate; 6) on the basis of points 4 and 5, the new method gives a more reliable picture of the correlation of pellet quality, petrographic textures and maximum temperatures, thus providing a more effective quality-control tool. A disadvantage of the method is, of course, that the measurements are not continuous and only maximum temperatures are determined. TEST PROGRAM Preparation of Materials: CALIBRATION OF ALLOYS - In the following discussion the term "bead point" (see Fig. 1) refers to the temperature at which each alloy begins to melt and form a bead. Fig. 2 gives the bead point curve for silver-palladium alloys. Encouraged by increased demand and higher prices for such metals as copper, lead, zinc, silver and tin, search was pressed in 1964 for mineral raw materials, especially in parts of the world that are relatively more stable politically and economically. New discoveries of metallic ores continued to be made, discoveries based on extensive geologic and geophysical work but nonetheless made in part because of good fortune.

Some months ago a gentleman gave me a handful of minerals which he had collected in an arroyo, or dry stream-bed, that ran through the town of Ramos, State of San Luis Potosi, Mexico, as a sample of the class of ore that might be expected in the mines of that section. I was, however, familiar with those mines and their ores, and cast the pebbles aside as of no interest. I afterwards returned to Mexico and took charge of two groups of mines, one in the State of Zacatecas, and the other in the town of Ramos, State of San Luis Potosi. While I was thus engaged, it was a very frequent occurrence for parties to bring me specimens of rock, ores, etc., for my opinion on them; and one day a man brought me a half-dozen or more small pieces of a very black shiny mineral, desiring to know what it was. I did not recognize it, and desired him to give me the specimens for analysis, which he promised to do in a day or two. He never did give them to me, for he lost them ; but he said there were plenty more where these came from—at Ramos—and he could get them at any time for me. I thought no more of the matter until after my return to this country, when, one day, in looking over some of my old " trash," I came across the specimens at first referred to as having been cast aside so carelessly. I noticed two distinct minerals among the pebbles : one being erubescite or tetrahedrite, the predominating mineral of the mines of Ramos, and the other a hard black shining mineral, the same that I had wished to analyze in Mexico. On testing for hardness I was surprised that it scratched topaz with some degree of ease, thus placing it above 8 in the scale of hardness. Trying it with a corundum, I sometimes succeeded in scratching it, but at other times it would scratch the corundum, and at still other times neither would produce the slightest effect on the other. Crystallized topaz would be ground to a powder in attempting to scratch the black mineral, without abrading it in the slightest. It must, therefore, be placed at 9 in the scale of hardness. He was born at Montreal, Canada, in 1875. His earliest education was received in Montreal hut was continued from 1885 to 1892 at schools and academies in Brooklyn, Whitestone, and Flushing, L. I. For his technical education he returned to McGill University, where he graduated in 1897. His first professional occupation was as transitman enga.ged in the running of township lines in the Rainy River District of Ontario. In 1899, he was made assistant chemist at the Cuggenheim smelter at Aguascalientes, Mexico. From 1900 to 1903, he was chief chemist for La Compañia Minera de Peñoles, at Mapimi, Durango. We have no information as to his pursuits during the next eight years, but from 1911 until 1914, when he became a member of the Institute, he was chief engineer for the Bankhead mines in Alberta, Canada. Lieutenant-Colonel Alfred Winter Evans Lieutenant-Colonel Evans, who was in command of the Third Battalion of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, and had been cited in Distinguished Service Orders and received the Distinguished Conduct Medal, was killed in action on Oct. 12, 1917. Alfred Winter Evans was born in Natal, South Africa, in 1881, and received his preliminary education in the Durban High School. For the next five years he attended St. George's School at Harpenden Heights, England, until 1898. Returning to South Africa, he worked . for three months of 1898 as underground sampler for the Crown Deep Gold Mining Co., at Johannesburg, and for six months of the following year he was shift-boss for the Crown Deep, Ltd. At the outbreak of the Boer War he took an active part and was engaged on military service from 1899 to 1902. At the close of the mar, he came to New York and attended the Columbia School of Mines, where he graduated with the degree of E. M. in 1906. A part of that year he spent as assayer to a mining company at Poland, Arizona. In 1907, he returned to South Africa and engaged as underground contractor in charge of mining and development at a number of the South African mines, notably the French-Rand, the ViIIage Main Reef, the City Deep, and others. In 1908, he acted as shift-boss for the Fer-rerra Gold Mining Co. at Johannesburg. In 1909, he was appointed acting general manager for the Consolidated Goldfields of New Zealand,

FOREIGN WAR RELIEF COMMITTEE Chairman, MRS. JESSE SCOBEY The task of the committee since Oct. 17, 1918, has been to stimulate and foster interest in the work of the Dispensary in France, to aid and further the work, and to that end has centered on the inauguration of an "Engineers' " day, once a week, at the headquarters of the American Fund for French Wounded, where members of the Auxiliary might join in sewing for this "Dispensary of the New York Section of the Woman's Auxiliary to the A. I. M. E.," recently established at Briey, France. Letters and pledge forms asking for workers were sent to all members of the Auxiliary in New York City and vicinity, and a most gratifying response has assured the success of the undertaking. The meetings in December, pending the completion of better working facilities at Fund headquarters, were held at the home of Miss Madeline P. Stone, to whom the committee extends its grateful thanks for her hospitality large, well-equipped room at Fund headquarters has now been assigned to the committee for Tuesday of each week, from 10 a. m. to 5 p. m., with Mrs. Percy E. Barbour of the committee as director of work room. All members of the Auxiliary and others whose interests are with the mining profession will be welcome on "Engineers'" day-Tuesdays-at 73 Park Ave.

What would be the, effect on the formation of sulfates of an increased water vapor content in the roasting gases? CHARLES H. FULTON.-I cannot answer that from our experience. The question of the formation of sulfate in the roasting of zinc is mainly one of temperature and the concentration of S02 and S03 in the gases. We found we could roast almost completely to sulfate if the concentration was kept at the proper point. We, however, did not care to do this because we wished to make a 5 to 6 per cent. S02 gas for sulfuric-acid work. The sulfating of the zinc oxide in the proper concentration of gases goes on very rapidly.
