The following pages summarize the causes that led to the suggestion of unit operation of the paloma field, the organization of com-mittees, preparation of the Paloma Operators Agreement and the reasons for rejection of the plan. Introduction Long ago an Austrian physicist observed that under certain conditions the condensation of a liquid from gaseous mixtures resulted from pressure reduction. Some 50 years later he would have known that his research was not in vain. He would have seen a group of serious operators and engineers seeking to apply that principle to a conservation . program for unitized production in the Paloma gas field—but he would also have been saddened to see that forces unsympathetic to the application of science in oil production, with little or no appreciation of modern methods and the advantages of cooperation, so far have prevented the adoption of that program. Soon after the Paloma field was discovered it was realized that all the hydrocarbons in the reservoir existed in the gaseous phase. This condition was confirmed over a large area. Therefore, if the field was to be properly exploited with the greatest ultimate recovery of condensate, the hydrocarbons in the reservoir must be produced in the single or gas phase. They must be cautiously extracted with the least possible reduction of the natural pressure. If this could be accomplished, or if artificial pressure control were utilized, the condensation and underground loss of the valuable distillate would be preventable—otherwise it would not be. Wholehearted cooperation of all oper-ators was required in order to accomplish the conservation purposes of the program. To this end the production engineers of the several companies concerned lent their time and talents. They fully investigated the physical relationships of the products within the complicated gaseous mixture, prepared extensive reports on the subject and drew up a reasonably efficient plan of operations, which now is commonly called the "Paloma Unit Plan" but actually was entitled "The Paloma Operators Agreement." All of the engineers were not in perfect agreement on all the features of the plan, or even on all the engineering principles. However, it is safe to say that on all the important or essential factors there was a unanimity of opinion, particularly as to the objectives. These were fairly simple and reduce to one controlling item, "pressure control" by cycling or recycling. Organization The principal operators initiated the program by calling a meeting of all the lessees in the area, at which an organization was perfected, known as the "Paloma Operators Committee." The problem of the metalliferous veins has always been an outstanding one in the science of ore deposits. In recent years interest has been stimulated by Spurr, who maintains that veins have consolidated from magmas that have densities as great as the densities of ordinary rocks. Lindgren published a noteworthy paper1 in 1926, in which he supports the theory that veins are deposited chiefly by hot waters. Lindgren's paper was discussed by Singewald, Spurr, Kemp, Anderson, Colony, Bateman, Porter and others. The discussion, in the main, was centered on the interpretation of fragments that are included in veins. This paper also treats the problems of fragments in veins and includes a reply to a review by Spurr2 of a bulletin by Larsen and myself3 published by the United States Geological Survey on the geology and ore deposits of Creede, Colorado. Mineral veins containing fragments of the wall rock are common. At many places the fragments are completely isolated, one from the other, and are entirely surrounded by vein matter. It has been stated that the vein matter around the fragments was heavier than the fragments and that the latter were floated in a magma. J. E. Spurr, who is the leading advocate of this hypothesis, 4 urges that normal mineral veins were deposited by solutions heavy enough to float fragments of the country rock, and it is mainly on this relation that he bases his theory that veins are deposited by solidification of magmas. If it can be shown that vein-forming solutions have a specific gravity greater than rock (2.77), one is justified in regarding them as true mag-matic solutions. It is shown later in this paper, however, that at Lead, S. D., water not more highly concentrated than ordinary drinking water is depositing vein matter around fragments of schist and of steel in such a manner that the fragments are completely isolated and completely surrounded by the mineral cement.

DURING the past few years, general interest in the steel-producing and steel-consuming industries has been centered on the so-called "inherent characteristics" of steels. While often vaguely described, these char-acteristics are known to influence the response to heat-treatment and the hardening characteristics of the material. Although most of the recent papers and discussions have associated the "inherent characteristics" with the austenitic grain size and empha-sized the importance of it, comparatively little is known of the variables that may affect the size of the austenite grain. The work to be described in this paper was carried out during the course of a study on the inherent characteristics of tool steel containing one per cent cart on. The discrepancies encountered in the determination and classification of the austenitic grain size led to in investigation of some of the variants influencing the austenitic grain size as determined by standard methods.

In a previous paper (ante, p. 411) some description was given of the occurrence of the auriferous alluvium, extensive deposits of which lie among the highlands of the province of Otago, New Zealand. The present paper will describe some of the methods by which that alluvium is exploited. The alluvial mining of New Zealand is not yet hindered by " debris legislation." The mines are for the most part situated in a country of little agricultural value, and large rivers with rapid currents act as tailings conveyors. In time, however, steps will have to be taken to restrict the discharge into the Clutha of the tailings which are slowly raising the river-bottom. The methods of California have been followed in Otago with such alterations as peculiar local conditions require. The distinctive feature of the alluvial mining of Otago is the prominence given to the hydraulic elevator. The all-important factor in this form of mining is the control of an abundant water-supply at a suitable height above the level where it is to be utilized; and in this respect the gold-fields of the south island of New Zealand are most favora-

The annual review of mineral dressing was the subject of considerable discussion at the MBD meeting in New York last February. Because the amount of material now being published is so imposing, it was generally agreed that reviewers should try only to cite the items of importance. In order to conserve even more space, it was agreed to omit bibliographies. In reading these reviews, and those of the past two or three years, one is impressed by the advances in materials handling, the enlargement and the advances in automation of unit process equipment. Although there has been development of a variety of new concentration principles in flotation, magnetic separation, et al., the design of these principles into new plants has not been widespread. The probable reason is that the plants being built today are so large and costly that few are able to face the risk of any significant degree of experimentation. There are exceptions to this; for example, some of the chemical processes, but these are usually because there was no conventional process available. This situation should change in time as the ores amenable to our conventional methods become depleted.

A study was made of the change in density during the first (transient) and second (linear) stages of the creep curve of polycrystalline copper as a function of 1) stress, 2) temperature, 3) plastic strain, 4) impurity and atmosphere effects, and 5) structure, including single crystals. Voids were not observed in single crystals strained 15 pct at 500°C, or in a polycrystal-line aggregate produced by recrystallizing a single crystal, within the limit of sensitivity, Ae/e = 1 x 10-4. It appears that voids are heterogeneously nucleated at grain boundaries by an insoluble phase, or phases, which can be removed by directional solidification. The principal controlling mechanism of void growth appears to be condensation of vacancies at grain boundaries. Vacancies are transported to a boundary and condense as a consequence of the tensile stress component across the boundary, which depends on the orientation and configuration of the boundary plane and on boundary shear across ledges and other irregularities. The ultimate source of vacancies is the free surface and diffusional transport is by way of the boundary plane. PREVIOUS investigations have dealt with the nucle-ation of voids at grain boundaries under creep condition~'-~ and with the connection between grain boundary voids and subsequent brittle fracture.5-7 Growth of voids during the creep process, particularly in the transient and linear stages of creep, has not been studied with the same intensity. Therefore, it seems pertinent to investigate the process of void growth with respect to the related creep curve, and the morphology of growing voids with respect to the structure.

THE New River coal-field embraces that portion of the Appalachian coal formation which lies on the waters of the New River, principally in Fayette and Raleigh counties, West Virginia, covering a strip of territory about forty miles in length along the line of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad from Quinnimont to Kanawha Falls, where the New River empties into the Kanawha, the railroad following the banks of the river the whole distance. (See map.) Between Kanawha Falls and the Valley of the Ohio lies the great Kanawha region, and these two coal-fields possess a greater variety of coal than can be found in any other portion of the country, enabling them to furnish the best fuels for any of the various demands of manufacture or domestic use, the Kanawha region possessing many varieties of gas, hard splint, and cannel coal, and the New River region bituminous and semi-bituminous, steam and coking coal. The New River, in its westward course towards the Kanawha, has cut its way entirely through the Seral conglomerate or No. XII of the Pennsylvania Reports, the Umbral red shales of No. XI appearing at the foot of the mountains at the eastern end of the region at Quinnimont, one of the upper ledges of the Conglomerate forming the summits; while at the western end, at Kanawha Falls, the top of the Conglomerate is nearly down to the level of the river, a portion of the " Lower Productive Measures" forming the greater portion of the mountains. These mountains rise abruptly from the banks of the river to a height of from 800 to 1200 feet, leaving only here and there narrow strips of bottom land, a few acres in extent; and as the measures consist principally of hard sandstones, shales, and conglomerates lying in a nearly horizontal position, the mountain-sides are very precipitous, with many long and high cliffs, which, with the great height of the mountains, give the country a very rugged appearance. Along the sides of these mountains fronting on the New River and its many tributaries there are exposed the outcroppings of several veins of bituminous and, semi-bituminous coal, varying in thickness from a few inches to over four feet, five of them being workable, or

In recent years many new appliances have been introduced into German steel-works and rolling-mills for the purpose of improving working-methods, and of creating and maintaining increased production, and satisfying the ever-growing demand for metal of closely specified hardness, strength and form. One result of the improvements has been to aid very effectively in demonstrating the real superiority of ingot- over wrought-iron for almost every possible purpose, and in dispelling the last vestiges of prejudice unfavorable to the new metal. If, nevertheless, no marked decrease in the number of puddlingfurnaces has yet been noticed, the cause of their survival must be attributed to the greatly increased consumption of all kinds of ironmanufactures. Several large new works for the production of ingotiron are now, however, in course of erection in the Rhenish-Westphalian district, and upon their completion a rapidly diminishing output of wrought-iron may be anticipated. The present aim of all large works manufacturing ingot-iron is to work the molten blast-furnace pig into a finished product without any further fuel-consumption than is required to furnish steam for the rolling-mill. Though practice has established the feasibility of this principle, no works can yet point to its complete adoption, partly because of the limitations imposed by existing conditions and plant, and partly, also, on account of the highly-diversified character of the finished products. The Bessemer-works were the first to feel the influence of the basic process; but of recent years a similar influence has affected the open-hearth, and the owners of works possessing both a converterand an open-hearth plant are now seeking to arrange them for combined working, in charging as well as in casting. (member of the committee)- (communication to the Secretary*).-In the discussion of papers presented at the New York meeting of the Institute in February, 1915, and at the Arizona meeting of September, 1916, I referred to the activities of the Bureau of Safety of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., and I am now submitting a few thoughts by members of the staff of that Bureau. TORGUS H. OAAS, Safety Engineer, Butte, Mont.-The report of the Committee on Safety and Sanitation has described different organizations and methods of promoting safety work. The effectiveness of these methods would aid the beginner in his campaign for safety in choosing the kind of organization and methods best adapted for his field. This can he obtained only by a discussion by those who have long promoted this kind of work, and have met with successful results. As the field is new, the different organizations promoting safety work have not established a common basis of rating for their fatal, serious and slight accidents, so that it is now difficult to get a comparative basis from which to judge the merits of the different systems. C. W. GOODALE.-The U. S. Bureau of Mines adopted, at the beginning, as a basis for its yearly summaries, the number of accidents. per 1,000 men employed, and it is now (quoting from its report for 1915, Technical Paper 168) making the following "classification of injuries:" "Many of the States now have. compensation laws, and in order to conform with their classifications, the bureau's classification of serious and slight injuries for 1915 is on a 14-day (2-week) basis instead of 20 days, as in previous years. INTRODUCTION IN a series of papers, the authors and their associates have shown that the resistance of a metal to fracture is a function of all three principal stresses. 10-18,20,21,23,[1] Consequently since a technical cohesion limit is defined as the technically determinable resistance to fracture, under a specific stress system, the technical cohesive strength comprises an infinite number of technical cohesion limits corresponding to the infinite number of possible combinations of the principal stresses. As shown in the previous papers, the technical cohesive strength increases with plastic deformation, with decrease in temperature, and with increase in the strain rate. The technical cohesion limit, therefore, is affected by the same factors that affect the flow stress,§ namely, the stress system, plastic deformation, temperature, and the strain rate. The effect of each of these factors on the fracture stress is qualitatively the same as its effect on the flow stress. The effect of any of the factors may be represented by a curve of cohesion limits, although only one point on the curve may represent actual fracture. Since the term "fracture stress" has come into general use with the same significance as technical cohesion limit; the authors are here using the' shorter term with the understanding that it, does not always refer to actual fracture. In the general investigation described. in the previously-mentioned papers,10-18,20,21,23 the influence of the stress 'system on the fracture stress was studied by means, of tension tests of notched specimens. When a circumferentially notched cylindrical' specimen is subjected to longitudinal ten-, sion, the minimum cross section is under " transverse radial tension. The mean radial stress increases with the depth and sharpness of the notch, but is always less than the longitudinal stress. The greatest principal stress (S,), therefore, is longitudinal, and since the radial stress is effectively equal to the circumferential stress, the transverse principal stresses are equiaxial in that plane (S2 = S3). By the use of notched specimens in tension tests it was shown that the fracture stress increases with increase in the radial stress ratio (S3/SI). The evidence is based not only on the results of tests to fracture at various constant temperatures, but also on. results of two-stage tests, in which each specimen was plastically deformed a predetermined

Activities of silicon in Ni-Si melts have beelz determined in the temperature range 1480° to 1610°C from electromotive-force measurements involving the cells The data obtained are used to derive the activities of nickel and the integal free energies of mixing. Entropies of mixing are calculated from the free energies of mixing as obtained in the present study and the heats of mixing as available in the literature. ACTIVITIES in Fe-Si and Co-Si melts have been determined recently by the authors&apos; using galvanic cells consisting of alloy, an oxygen electrode, and an oxide melt as electrolyte. The present paper deals with activities in Ni-Si melts as measured with the same technique. A schematic diagram of the cell is shown in Fig. 1. The alloy and the electrolyte consisting of CaO and SiO2 are contained together in a silica-glass crucible. During the experiment the silica glass crystallizes to cristobalite on the surface of the crucible. Nickel contents of the electrolyte are very small (<0.1 pct as checked with chemical analysis), because of the noble character of nickel in comparison with silicon. A tapered silica tube is connected to the crucible through which a platinum or molybdenum wire is inserted, as shown in Fig. 1. A platinum tube reaches the surface of the CaO-SiO2 electrolyte from above. The platinum tube is provided with four holes on its side, through which oxygen of 1 atm pressure is blown over the electrolyte. The cell reaction is given by the equation Si(metal) + O2(gas) = SiO2(electrolyte) [3] and the galvanic electromotive force of the cell is given by the formula

Remoteness of western Canadian coals has always been a barrier to the use of Canadian coals domestically. However, the world energy crunch, increased mining costs, stricter environmental controls, labor shortages, etc., are such that by 1980 a shortfall from traditional U.S. sources will prevail. Of necessity, Canada must then bring western coals east, requiring major new transportation initiatives. CN, CP Rail and Neptune Terminals are proceeding jointly with the design of a $30 million, fully automated, coal terminal at Thunder Bay. This element forms part of a $400 million integral transportation system to open new lines, improve trackage, acquire rolling stock and ships, for an initial capacity of 3 million tpy.

In selecting new or replacement mining machinery to be purchased, there are many considerations to be discussed and taken into account, the most important being the productivity of the machine and the maintenance cost and downtime to be expected with the new equipment. Productivity of a given mining machine is evaluated by the Industrial Engineering Department: analysis of potential upkeep and downtime calls for the Maintenance Department to enter into the task of evaluating new mining machines. This is a very important function of the maintenance department because a wrong decision or mistake in judgment, particularly in a commercial mining company, can be exceedingly expensive. Once the type and size of a machine is decided, an examination of units fitting the basic requirements will sometimes show one particular machine which has a distinct edge on the competitive machine. In this case, the decision is easy. However, in most cases, the performances of the machines being considered are so close that the decision becomes one that is very difficult to make on performance alone. Serious consideration must then be given to maintenance performances and features of the machine which would permit lower maintenance and less downtime.
