The orientation of metal crystals and grains, both large and small, can be detcrmined conveniently and accurately without the use of X-ray apparatus. This seems to be appreciated by so few metallurgists that it may be useful to explain in detail the method we have found most satisfactory in the laboratory—the reflection of light from crystallographie etch pits. This note includes a description of a suitable inexpensive instrument and instructions for etching various metals and for plotting the data. As the stereographie projection is used to facilitate handling the data, this note may he considered as an appendix to an earlier review of the metallurgical uses of the stercographie projection.' Various methods involving etch pits have been used by other investigators. Bridgman's method2 consists of attaching the specimen to a sphere (a transparent sphere is convenient4 , holding it at arm's length, and marking a spot on it when it has been turned so that the eteh pits reflect light into the eye of the observer from a lamp standing behind him. It has an accuracy of about 2" and is extrernely rapid. A greater accuracy can be obtained by having the reflected light fall on a screen, as has been done by Czochralski,5 Chalmers,6 and Schubnikov.7 All of these methods have been intended for undeformed single crystals. Tammann and his coworkers3,8 developed a method for estimating the number of grains in a polyerystalline aggregate having orientations in a given region of the stereographic triangle and thus obtained statistical information about deformation and reerystallization textures. While the method has had some use in recent years,9 it is not applicable to the majority of problems in physical metallurgy. Smith and Mehl10 determined orientations by plotting the directions of the sides of individual etch pits on a stereographic projection. The accuracy is limited to about 3" and the method requires careful polishing and high magnification.

IN recent years a considerable tonnage of the 18 per cent chromium and 8 per cent nickel steels has been used in lightweight high-strength structures that must be resistant to deterioration under atmospheric conditions. These steels are austenitic in character and their strength can best be increased by cold-working. Although a marked increase in tensile strength is obtained, claims have been made that the cold-worked steels do not possess fully satisfactory elastic properties. Under certain conditions, however, this has caused no great concern, because, as explained by Ragsdale,1,2 the cold-rolled steels have been widely applied for construction of lightweight, high-strength trains using spot welding for joining purposes. Ffield3 agrees that the ease with which thin sections of the cold-rolled 18-8 steels can be joined by spot welding is greatly in their favor, but that they would be more satisfactory if higher elastic properties and a higher modulus of elasticity could be obtained. He states that, as far as the mechanical properties are concerned, the straight chromium stainless steel is superior to the cold-worked 18-8 steel, and in order to illustrate, he presented the data of Fig. 1, which also give a stress-strain curve for a low-carbon 13 per cent Cr steel. Ffield? pro-posed that columbium-bearing or titanium-bearing cold-rolled 18-8 steels be given a heat-treatment (preferably for 1 hr.) in the range 400° to 600°C. to precipitate carbides in order to obtain better mechani-cal properties. Discussions by Sutton,4,5 de Ganahl,6,7 8 Krivobok and Lincoln,9 Knerr,10 and Thaden11 have given further information on the properties of the cold-rolled 18-8 steels compared with other materials used in light-weight, high-strength structures. These investigators and others point out that the ultimate tensile strength of the cold-rolled 18-8 steel can be increased to 200,000 lb, per sq. in. or higher; Krivobok et al. indicate that

C.-Observation made after examination of a number of defective gun forgings, together with a history of their manufacture, has strongly suggested that so-called "flakes" and woody or fibrous fractures are not necessarily analogous and are often caused by entirely different conditions. While some flaked bars may show fibrous areas in the fracture, it does not necessarily follow that the conditions causing these areas are the same as cause the fibrous, or so-called laminated, structures so commonly met in gun forgings subject to transverse tensile test; the fibrous structure formed in some flaky bars are merely incidental to the conditions causing the flakes. It is believed that the so-called flakes, or bright silvery spots, are mainly due to inherent physical defects in the steel, which existed at the very origin of the steel, rather than metallographic defects caused by subsequent irregularities in mechanical or thermal treatment. While great care in forging and treatment may, in a measure, tend to overcome the evil effect of the defects, with many heats of ingots, no such precautionary measures are needed to produce perfect forgings- and with such heats of steel it would be impossible, no matter how carelessly handled, to produce intentionally a forging containing the defects commonly known as flakes. It has been found possible, on several occasions, to actually predict flaky forgings from an inspection f the ingot after it had solidified, and in such cases no amount of careful forging or heat treatment would prevent the occurrence of such defects in the forging. The inspection of the physical condition of the ingot, and especially the character of the shrinkage on. the top of the ingot, has been given too little thought and study in this connection.

An analysis was made of the influence of floating molten zone traversal on the purification of tungsten rods and the effect of this purification on the brittle -to-ductile transition temperature. The major impurities detectable in the original rods, i.e., molybdenum and oxygen, were reduced by zone refining from 30 to 3 Ppm. Changes in the trace amounts of other impurities could not be quantitatively determined since they were below the limit of detection. Tensile tests on 3-mil wires, drawn from these rods and recrystallized to 17,000 grains per sq mm, showed a transition temperature of 60°C for the zone Purified and 175°C for the original material. 1 HE brittle-to-ductile transition temperature is manifest mainly in the bee metals, iron,' molybdenum, chromium,3 tungsten,4 and niobium. Since many of these metals cannot be fabricated at room temperature in a commercially pure annealed poly-crystalline state, a considerable amount of work has been done on evaluating the influence of purification on the transition temperature in order to determine indirectly whether the fabricability of these metals can be improved by removing impurities. Smith and Rutherford8 showed that the transition temperature of iron is lowered significantly by zone purification. Working with chromium, Edwards, Nish, and wain7 found also that purification appreciably lowered the transition temperature. A similar evaluation has so far not been reported for tungsten, probably because of the difficulties in obtaining tungsten in a purified polycrystalline state. carlson8 and, more recently, schadler9 have purified tungsten rods by floating zone traversal, but after zone traversal, their rods were single crystals. To obtain high-purity polycrystalline tungsten, a technique has to be round for transforming the zone-purified single crystal material into a suitable polycrystalline structure. The purpose of this investigation was to obtain zone-purified tungsten in a suitable polycrystalline state and then to evaluate the effect of zone purification on the transition temperature.

In view of the recent advance made in the knowledge of the nature and conditions accompanying the occurrence of oil and gas, and of the recent activity in drilling in Wyoming, Montana, and western Canada, a discussion of the probabilities of obtaining production in such a reservoir as the Dakota sand in general, and in particular districts, is thought by the author to be timely and likely to result in more intelligent operating in certain parts of the territory underlain by this sand. In Canada particularly it is thought that these general considerations have equal if not more significance in a consideration of the oil and gas possibilities of the formations than have the various local conditions. Age and Nature of Deposition of the Dakota Sand The Dakota is distinctive in that it is known to form a generally continuous sheet of sand underlying the greater part of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, North and South Dakota, Montana, and large areas in Nebraska, Colorado, and Wyoming. It does not seem to have been laid down in more or less isolated lenses, as has been the case with most oil-sand horizons. Except in northern Alberta, the Dakota sand contains fresh-water fauna, having been deposited very uniformly over these wide areas in shallow water with prevailing strong currents. In northern Alberta marine and brackish water conditions prevailed. In this district it forms the basal member of the Cretaceous sediments, directly overlying beds of Devonian limestone along a great unconformity in the Athabasca River valley and eastward. In southern and western Alberta it is underlain unconformably by the Kootenay shales (Lower Cretaceous), and by Jurassic and Carboniferous rocks. The above assumption was not made tacitly. On the contrary, it is based upon the very experiments embodied in my paper. Indeed, most of those experiments were undertaken with that end in view, i.e., to ascertain the existence of such a relation. In the combination induction-electrical log used at present in the field, the induction logging tool is appropriate for the investigation of moderately invaded formations. A new induction sonde with a radius and investigation about twice as large has been developed recently for the case of deep invasion. It has very nearly the same vertical resolution as the present sonde so that thin beds are defined as accurately as before. The characteristics of the new tool are described, the corresponding interpretation charts are given and field examples are discussed. The design of the sonic logging tool has been modified to improve the calibration and the reliability. The fact that porosity can be accurately recorded by means of the sonic log has prompted new interpretation procedures for saturation estimation, wherein the data concerning the various permeable beds in a given well are correlated. One approach consists of plotting transit time vs true resistivity, with an appropriate scale. With this approach, saturations can be estimated conveniently even in cases where formation water resistivity is not well known. In another approach, a comparison is made of the values of the formation waters computed from the re- sistivity and sonic logs. Using the concept of continuity, this procedure makes possible a quick determination of zones of saturation in shaly sands and/or in case of appreciable variations of formation salinities with depth. It has been found that the comparison of porosity from the sonic log with the apparent porosity computed from a short-investigation resistivity log may reveal, in many cases, the presence of residual oil and thus detect potentially productive formations; this procedure is valuable when the true formation resistivity and the resistivity of the formation water are in doubt. INTRODUCTION During the past year, the efficiency of log interpretation has been vastly improved. The improvements have largely resulted from the introduction of a deep-investigation induction device and from the application of new interpretation techniques that utilize sonic vs resistivity readings. Since the new interpretation techniques depend, in part, upon good values of true formation resistivity, the new induction log will be discussed under Part I. The sonic interpretation techniques will be studied under Part 11. Early in 1959, the 6FF40 induction equipment was introduced in the field. This device was designed for a better approach to true formation resistivities in deeply invaded zones. The greatly improved radial investigation of the 6FF40 equipment has been achieved without sacrificing vertical resolution. The first combination induction-electrical log, the 5FF40, was introduced as a standard tool in 1956 for the logging of wells drilled with fresh muds. The tool has received wide industry acceptance in the United States. 'The 5FF40 induction log has a radial investigation sufficient to overcome average depths of mud filtrate invasion. At 5d invasion, for example, the 5FF40 induction log will read about 1.4 R. in a water sand where R., = 10R,. At 10d invasion, such induction log would read 2.45 R. in the same water sand. In either case, the effects of invasion would not be sufficiently great to cause a water sand to be mistaken for a shale-free oil- or gas-producing zone. Some formations, however, invade deeply — in excess of 10d. Such water zones could be mistaken for oil-or gas-saturated sands unless the porosity balance' can clearly make the distinction. THE metallurgical polarization microscope has been utilized in several researches in the last few years, thus attaining a fair degree of prominence, but little has been written in a manner suitable to a metallurgist concerning the theory of this instrument. In this investigation the theory was carefully studied, and the results are presented here in a detailed manner, yet as simply as possible. The theory - is discussed with particular reference to the three chief functions of the instrument: (1) determination of anisotropy; (2) effect of strain; and (3) identification of inclusions. Each of these is investigated experimentally, with especial attention to the mechanism of producing any effect. Where possible, the discussion is supplemented by photomicrographs. The instrument used had numerous defects as a polarization microscope; these and their remedies are discussed. In the microscopic study of transparent mineral sections (chalcography) the use of polarized light has aided tremendously in the identification of a mineral. The determination of strain in transparent substances (photoelasticity) by the use of polarized light has lately become a commercial process, used in testing finished glass articles. The success of the use of polarized light with opaque materials has not been so great. The magnitude of the effects obtained is much less than that of the corresponding effects with transparent materials, and the mechanical difficulties are much greater. This paper describes the evolution of transportation at an important mining property, beginning at a time when the railhead was 400 mi. distant, and tracing the steps leading to the development of what is probably the heaviest ore train ever operated in underground mine service over narrow-gage tracks, a 300-ton ore train on a 20-in. track, at working costs closely approximating those obtained on systems involving much greater capital expenditure. Useful where geological and financial considerations render inadvisable the excavation and maintenance of large tunnels and heavier rolling stock. THE problem of transportation in the Clifton-Morenci district of Arizona has been one of peculiar difficulty and consequently has been an important factor in the cost of mining and treating the ores produced. From the crude beginning made over 50 years ago, many changes have been necessary to keep pace with the increased output of copper. A heavy-duty haulage system has developed on the original 20-in. track gage to meet the existent metal-mine conditions.

In conducting the manufacture of extruded brass rods and brass forgings it has been noticed that there is considerable variation in the physical properties, particularly the machinability of different rods and forgings, even though the composition, working temperatures and method of manufacture remain the same. It is the purpose of this paper to attempt to establish the cause and extent of this variation, and also to determine whether variations in composition within certain defined limits influence hardness and machinability to any marked degree. The writer believes that this variation probably is due to the variation in grain size of the metal, therefore the microstructures of several compositions under various conditions of working were examined in an effort to establish this as a fact. Survey of Previous Work in Studying Extrusion Defects Very little has been published concerning defects in extruded and forged brass. In 1921, R. Genders1 $ delivered a paper before the British Institute of Metals, relative to a defect inherent in the extrusion process. This defect, commonly found in extruded brass rod, shows up in the form of a circle in a transverse section consisting of oxides and impurities, and is generally present in the last 25 to 30 per cent of the rod. Genders concluded that the defect is caused by the turning inward of the skin of the billet at the edge of the plunger because the inside of the billet is more plastic than the outside, which is in contact with the cooler container; the outside skin will lag behind to form the rear end of the rod. Genders suggested a movable die as a remedy, and while this met with fair success, it is not used in present practice. About the same time as Genders' experiments, Tucker2 and Rosen-hain3 conducted experiments using colored plasticene in the form of a billet, and found much the same defect as Genders.
