Probably a more descriptive title would be "Much Ado About Nothing." By "nothing," of course, I refer to the porosity which is the main feature of this type of bearing. Porosity has a decided effect on the manufacturing techniques, the structure and physical properties, the oil content, and on the installation and service of oil-retaining porous bronze bearings. A simple curve can be drawn by plotting specific gravity along the abscissa and percentage of porosity by volume on the ordinate. A bronze composition, analyzing 89 Per cent copper, 9.75 Per cent tin, and 1.25 per cent graphite, has an absolute solid specific gravity of 8.5. At this specific gravity, of course, occurs the point of zero porosity. Conversely, at loo per cent porosity, the specific gravity is zero. A similar curve can be drawn for bearings impregnated with oil; the only change being that the specific gravity at loo per cent oil will be 0.89 if we assume that that is the specific gravity of the lubricant. The curve is useful in determining the oil content by volume for any specific gravity. The normal range of oil content for porous bronze bearings of this composition is from 35 to 16 per cent, which is in the specific gravity range of from 5.8 to 7.3. In addition to the amount of porosity, the type of porosity is important. The first consideration here is that the porosity must be intercommunicating. This can be determined by a number of simple tests. The first method, which is very accurate, is to extract the oil in the bearing by cycling

The surface charge, electrokinetic potential and surface conductance were studied for silica, alumina and rutile as the functions of PH and concentration of 1-1 electrolyte solutions. The adsorption potentials of potential-determining and specifically adsorbed ions were calculated from isoelectric and zero charge points on the basis of Stern equation and thermodynamic description. From surface conductance and charge data the mean ionic mobilities in double layer were estimated. The results give some information about the real structure of oxide-electrolyte interface and gel-layer concept.

THE work of D. J. McAdam1,2 at the U. S. Naval Engineering Experiment Station, Annapolis, Md., on what has been called by him "corrosion fatigue" has focussed the attention of the engineering profession in general, and of those interested especially in the study of corrosion in particular, on the importance of making tests which will indicate as nearly as possible what can be expected from a given material in service. Pitting is unquestionably the chief agent operating so tremendously to reduce fatigue limits, but in the light of previous work3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 it is fair to assume that absorbed hydrogen resulting from the action of the corroding medium upon steel may, under certain conditions, have a perceptible influence. The experiments described in this paper deal more precisely with stressless corrosion, or "prior-corrosion fatigue, "9 and have been carried out to test such an assumption, to segregate, if possible, the effect of pitting from that of absorbed hydrogen, and although very preliminary in nature they indicate results which are striking.

The June meeting was held on June 27, 1919, at 9.00 P.M., eight Directors, the Secretary and Assistant Secretary of the Institute, and eleven guests were present. An invitation was extended to Herbert C. Hoover to be a guest on his arrival in the United States. The President was authorized to appoint a committee to obtain a portrait of Herbert C. Hoover. The announcement was made of the receipt of $100,000 from the bequest of Dr. James Douglas, and the Finance Committee was authorized to invest this money and devote the income to the support and maintenance of the Library. The price of the Year Book was established at $2.00. S. A. Taylor was appointed delegate from the Institute to attend the dedication of the buildings of the Bureau of Mines at Pittsburgh. The President was authorized to appoint a committee to confer with the Development Committees of the other Founder Societies. Reports of the Treasurer and Finance Committee were presented and ordered filed.

As I promised, in a former paper on the Bryan Mill,* to give further data regarding the plates from four battery-aprons, I now submit the following: These aprons were 4.5 feet wide by 16 feet long; the first two plates of each apron were 4.5 by 4.5 feet, and the remainder of varying sizes, as can be seen by their relative weights, as shown in the table; but all were 54 inches wide. They were in use 4 years and 9 months, and about 15,265 tons of ore passed over each. The ore was quartz, carrying about the same weight in silver as in gold; showing some copper, and highly impregnated with ferric oxide. The tailings show about 0.6 per cent., and the bullion about 10 per cent., of copper. The silver was present mostly as sulphide; and the copper was also present as sulphide, with some carbonate. The ore treated ill 1898 was a fair average of the whole run; so I take it as an example from which to make a few deductions.

"The cleanliness and system evidenced in the accompanying photographs of the West Steward change-house will appeal to all mine operators. This design is the most efficient in use at Butte. It is the standard which will probably be used in Butte in all future construction and is the result of a long period of investigation and experimenting. It is important that such a structure be as nearly fire-proof as possible, because of the frequent fires originating within the lockers from matches, etc., in the men's clothes. The concrete floors permit the thorough washing of the building whenever necessary.The lockers are roomy and well ventilated. They are constructed of sheet steel and are warmed from below by steam pipes."

It is a common observation among those engaged in the ironbusiness, that the lower (i.e., the less graphitic) grades of pigiron show a rough face on the pig. As such irons are always low in silicon, the generally accepted belief is, that this rough face is due to the absence of silicon. Certain investigations, however, made by the writer on Embreville pig-iron, and extending over nearly a year's time, seem to indicate another cause, namely, the giving-off of included gases, particularly sulphurous oxide (SO2,). It is, of course, the tendency of such gases to rise through the iron, escaping into the air; and the more liquid the iron, and the longer it remains liquid, the greater the chance for such escape. The lower grades of iron, being always colder, tend to solidify early, and before the included gases can completely escape.

Although the extractive metallurgist has not yet tackled the problem of getting blood out of a stone, he must, when faced with the mini- metal values of today's ores, believe that this ultimate miracle will soon be expected of him. Even assuming that some plausible professor at one of the few remaining minerals industry schools could persuade the National Science Foundation to sponsor such a sanguine research project, the funds might have to go begging for want of a graduate metallurgist. Falling enrollment in fields devoted to nonrenewable mineral resources, long a matter of grave concern to educators, is now recognized as a problem of great national consequence urgently needing a solution. While the law of supply and demand might eventually be expected to right the imbalance of engineers, time is not on our side and action to correct the shortage is required now.

The Asheville Minerals Research Laboratory at North Carolina State University is engaged mainly in applied nonmetallic mineral processing research to assist the North Carolina mining industry. The laboratory helped to bring the flotation process to North Carolina feldspar. spodumene, mica and phosphate producers and it maintains a versatile batch and pilot plant. The conservation of mineral resources through improved processing methods has been the object of most of the laboratory's projects. Current laboratory work is sponsored by three feldspar companies, the State of North Carolina, and the U.S. Bureau of Mines. This work is aimed at reducing the amounts of feldspar tailings in the Spruce Pine area. Mineral dressing techniques are applied to these tails to reclaim salable mineral products such as feldspar, mica, quartz, and to make a more uniform material for possible ceramic and other applications.

THE growth of and profession depends on meeting and solving new problems. It is a continuous process. 'A period free from new, or hitherto unknown, questions will be a period of arrested development in the profession it affects. The present generation has witnessed a' mechanical development that has been truly marvelous: Almost every day marks the advent of a new, or the improvement of an old; process, method or machine. Wonders are now commonplace. The impossible is regularly accomplished. Yet, with all our progress in every realm of science and with our development in the engineering field, advances which have made possible the marvelous growth in industry, we have not made commensurate gains in methods affecting the human factor. Without the cooperation of the worker, we shall always fall short of our goal in a mechanical or statistical sense. If we do not make the individual members of the human family strong, healthy, happy, and ambitious for better things for themselves and their children, we will have failed utterly, for that is the real reason for our existence as men and the purpose of our organized effort as an engineering group. Since start-up in 1906, Bingham had been a rail pit, beginning with steam locomotives and converting to electric locomotives in 1923. Ore production was maintained by effective utilization of avail- able rail equipment. From time to time, as it became necessary to deepen the pit and as stripping ratios increased, studies of alternative material haulage systems such as diesel locomotives, conveyor belts and trucks were made. Conversion from rail haulage with electric locomotives could not, however, be justified. Because of a gradual decline in ore grade, a program was approved in 1963 to raise ore production to 108,000 tpd. The decision posed a serious problem: due to built-in inflexibility and other limitations, a parallel expansion of the rail haulage system was impractical. (Track and trolley wire relocation causes greater shovel downtime than required for normal maintenance; instability of the dumps and the resulting additional track maintenance increases greatly as the daily volume of waste material increases.) Studies indicated that economically the most favorable course of action would be the replacement of rail haulage on the upper levels of the mine by truck haulage.
