IN my studies during the past twenty years of the enrollments in the mining and metallurgical schools of the United States and Canada, I have been struck with the great diversity in the curricula offered by these schools. In 1933 when I made my first complete study of the schools (Mining and Metallurgy, May 1934, p. 211), I discovered 19 different curricula or programs of study, leading to almost as many different bachelor degrees, in the 49 schools in the United States and the 4 schools in Canada. The nickel-chromium alloys form the base f for many industrial heating alloys, so that this system is of considerable practical importance. The literature on these alloys, however, contains much conflicting evi-dence, not only regarding the solubility limits of the terminal solid solu-tions at different temperatures but even regarding, the number of phases existing in the system. Part of the difficulty undoubtedly arises from the fact that chromium of sufficiently high purity has been available only during the last few years. A second and possibly even more impor-tant difficulty arises from the ease with which chromium reacts with silicon and carbon compounds and the atmosphere to form silicides, carbides, nitrides and oxides. Pilling and kihlgren1 in 1929 reviewed the existing scanty information. They did not consider the diagram by which they summarized the various bits of information to be entirely satisfactory. Matsunaga2 investigated the system by thermal analysis, microscopic examination and other means. Electrolytic nickel of 99.9 per cent purity and thermit chromium containing 0.30 per cent al, 0.40 per cent fe, 0.25 per cent si and 0.04 per cent c were used. During 1967 wage settlements and strikes ran at a high rate and it has been estimated that union gains of 4 ½ % to 5% per year have been attained in many instances. When these events are coupled with the need to operate on lower grade and deeper deposits the need for technological advances in underground mining becomes obvious. Emphasis has been on ways to reduce the number of manshifts required per ton of product. Most significant advances have been made in rapid advance of primary mine openings, development of mobile, rubber-tired, front-end loaders and hauling units, high-speed drilling with rotary and rotary percussive units and a serious look at nuclear devices to break large volumes of ore cheaply. Boring Developments in bit manufacture and metallurgy have allowed continuous boring-type machines to be used on harder formations than was deemed feasible in the past. Hecla Mining Co. has been using raise boring equipment for drilling 9 7/8 in. diam pilot holes in raises which are later reamed in an upward direction to 48 in. diam. The machine used is a J. S. Robbins model 42R raise borer which has been used successfully to drill two relatively long 48-in. diam holes. The first was 520 ft in length at a dip of 76º, and the second was a 785-ft vertical hole.

During the course of an in~*estigation into the occurrence of ordered AB3 structures, the following new phases have been found —CrRh3 (AuCu3 type), CrCo3 (MgCd3 type), HfCo4 (Ths Mn23 type), and WPt, MoPh type). The composition of the TiPt3-x phase (TiNi, type) is close to Ti23Pl77. The alloy chenzistry of transition rnetal AB3 structures is rezliewed in the light of electron concentration correlations of hex-agonality recently obtained for quasi-binary alloys. The relatizte colurne contraction in the AB3 structures increases with increasing difference in volume of the conzponents. A family of ordered close-packed layered structures is formed by stacking identical layers of composition AB, in various sequences, such that the coordination is twelvefold throughout and there are no A-A contacts. Previous work' on quasi-binary AB3 alloys has led to the conclusion that the stacking sequence of the AB, structures changes with increasing radius ratio RA/RB from a purely cubic, through different mixtures of hexagonal and cubic stacking to a purely hexagonal stacking. However. for binary AB3 alloys, a correlation between the type of the crystal structure and the position of the components in the various volumns of the periodic table has been noted.2-5 It has been noted6 that this correlation appears to hold even though the radius ratio RA/RB may vary over a considerable range with the location of the components in the three long periods. Another study7" of several quasi-binary systems led to the conclusion that an increase in hexagonality of the stacking is associated with increase in the electron concentration e/a. as defined by the average per atom of the total number of electrons outside the inert gas shells. In apparent conflict with this conclusion, it is known that seven binary alloy structures isotypic with TiNi3 which is 50 pct hexagonal occur at a higher electron concentration (e/n = 8.5) than that (e/a = 8.25) for the 100 pct hexagonal MgCd3 type structure present in seven binary AB3 alloys. Table 111. In the present work, an investigation into the occurrence of binary AB3 structures in transition metal alloys was made, and a survey of binary AB3 structures is presented. EXPERIMENTAL The starting materials were pure metals of 99.9 wt pct purity. The alloys were arc-melted under partial pressure of argon and annealed in sealed silica capsules lined with molybdenum foil under argon at- mosphere. The total weight loss upon melting and subsequent annealing was always less than 1 pct and hence the alloys will be referred to by their intended (unanalyzed) compositions. Wherever the constitution permitted. the alloys were given a homogenizing treatment at 1200°C (3 days) prior to annealing. Unless otherwise stated all alloys were annealed at 900°C for 1 week and water-quenched. Sometimes the final annealing treatment was carried out on powders to accelerate the attainment of equilibrium. X-ray powder patterns were taken using a Guinier-de Wolff focusing camera (CuK, radiation) or an asymmetrical focusing camera (Co or CrK, radiation). For lattice parameter determination. internal silicon standards were employed. The intensity calculations were made using a Fortran IV program written by Jeitschko and parthe.9 RESULTS Twenty AB3 and three AB4 alloys were investigated. Table I lists the crystallographic data on some of the intermediate phases encountered in the present work. Table II contains the X-ray data for HfCo, (Th,,Mn,, type). The positional parameter, x. was assumed to be 0.378. the value for Th6Mnn2310 The X-ray pattern of ZrCo, was very similar to that of HfCo, and the previous structure determination of ZrCo, by Kuzma el al." was confirmed. Ordering in the alloy CrCo could be ascertained by the presence of only one weak super lattice line (101). the others being too weak presumably owing to the small difference in the scattering powers of chromium and cobalt. This line was observed in the X-ray pattern of powder from the massive sample annealed at 830°C (7 days) after the powder had been reannealed at 600°C (24 hr). The diffraction pattern of the powder similarly reannealed at 830°C (24 hr) contained only the lines due to a mixture of hcp and fcc Co(Crj solid solutions. Therefore, it appears reasonable to assume that O2 and/or N2 contamination which would be less likely to occur during the 600°C anneal was not responsible for the observed weak reflection. Also. this reflection cannot be identified with any of the strong lines of the neighboring s phase which is present in the Co-Cr system at higher chromium contents. The composition corresponding to the TiNi3 structure observed by Raman et al.12 in the two-phase alloy Ti,zt,, has been established in the present work as being between There was satisfactory agreement for the low-angle lines (up to d = 1.997A) between the observed diffraction pattern of TiCua and that calculated assuming the ZrAu, structure. as recently proposed by Pfeifer-et a1.I3 However. some of the superlattice lines. e.g., at d = 1.937 and 1.919A. predicted by the ZrAu, structure were not actually observed eve? though neighboring lines. at d = 1.947 and 1.986A. of comparable calculated intensity were present. THE object of this note is to report briefly certain results of investigations on the Fe-In phase diagram. BISRA-high purity H-iron and 99.9 pct pure indium were used to prepare the alloys. The experimental techniques consisted of thermal analysis, optical metallography, and X-ray diffraction. A phase diagram based on the present results as well as those reported earlier by the author' is shown in Fig. 1. It is seen that the liquidus points fall on a smooth line which meets the monotectic isotherm at 1470°C. The liquidus extends up to 3.4 at. pct In. The phase boundary separating the two liquidus L1 and L2 is shown dotted. The experimental solidus meets the monotectic isotherm at -0.9 at. pct In. The 6/6 + L2 boundary drops steeply to the 6 + La/y + L2 boundary at -1350°C. In this region, it is impossible to detect satisfactory thermal arrests because of the steep phase boundary. The present diagram shows that indium lowers the temperature of the d/y transforma-tion and raises the temperature of the y/a transfor-mation. The y +d region is found to be very narrow. Indium gives rise to a restricted y field when alloyed with iron. The width of this field is between 0.4 and 0.5 at. pct In. Details of the alloys containing 40 and 50 at. pct In have already been reported by the author' and the transformation temperatures of these alloys are included in Fig. 1. It appeared from optical metallography and X-ray diffraction that the room temperature solubility of indium in a iron is less than 0.28 at. pct since alloys of 0.28 at. pct In and above, slow cooled to room temperature, contained dark etching second phase particles situated both in the matrix and grain boundaries of the a-grains, see Figs. 2 and 3. These particles were identified to be unalloyed indium by X-ray diffraction. The lattice parameter of the a phase reached a maximum of 2.8672A at the indium level of -0.28 at. pct. The present diagram, Fig. 1, is in substantial agreement with that of Stadelmaier and Fiedler' except for certain differences in detail. For example, they found the monotectic composition and temperature to be 7.0 at. pct In and 1443oC, respectively, while the present work indicates them to be 3.4 at. pct In and 1470°C. The 6 + L2/y + L2 transformation is indicated in the present work to occur at -1350°C, whereas Stadelmaier and Fiedler find this to occur at -1320°C. They also claim that the width of the y field is 0.2 at. pct In while the present work shows the width to be between 0.4 and 0.5 at. pct In. 1) Indium, when alloyed with iron, gives rise to a restricted y field, the width being >0.5 at. pct In.

The important question of the metallurgical value of the coals of the Rocky Mountains and the Pacific Coast is to be settled, of course, by practical experiment. Meanwhile, as I have had occasion to point out, the proximate analyses of these coals throws little light upon it, and is, indeed, likely to mislead the metallurgist, if he compares it with the results of similar analyses upon bituminous and semi-bituminous coals. With the view of showing how large a proportion of the material usually classed as(" volatile matters " consists of combined water, or oxygen and hydrogen presumably in chemical combination, I have collected a number of ultimate analyses from various sources, in the following tables. PREVIOUS investigations 1,2 of Fe3P described by pearson3 and schubert4 show that Fe3P has a bct unit cell having four Fe3P tetrahedra centered around each lattice point. The space group is 14, No. 82, and all atoms occupy general positions 8(g). The cell dimensions3 are: a = 9.090, c = 4.446 kX, with an axial ratio of c/o = 0.4891. We have measured the lattice parameters of Fe3P, using a Fe as an internal temperature standard, at 23°, 414°, and 678°C and computed the thermal expansion over this temperature range. The Fe,P was prepared by melting under vacuum (after flushing with argon) a commercially pure iron and "ferrophosphor" in a high-frequency induction furnace. Part of the ingot was crushed for X-ray examination and for chemical analysis. X-ray diffraction and light microscopy indicated iron phosphide (Fe3P) present as the major constituent and a small amount (about 5 pct) of a Fe. Chemical analysis showed 0.05 wt pct Si, 0.008 wt pct N, 0.018 wt pet C, and less than 0.02 wt pct each of other metallic elements. METALLIC titanium has been prepared in small quantities since the beginning of the century. Hunter1 reported in 1910 that he obtained a malleable product of 99.9 pct purity by the reduction of the tetrachloride by sodium in a closed container. Later Van Arkel2 and Fast3 prepared small quantities of malleable titanium by thermal decomposition of titanium iodide. Another method for producing malleable titanium from tetrachloride was reported by Kroll4 who used magnesium as the reducing agent. More recently Dean, Long, Wartman, and Anderson5 working at the U.S. Bureau of Mines have reported the preparation of the metal on a pilot plant scale by the reduction of titanium tetrachloride by magnesium in an atmosphere of helium. Their product, which is malleable, was used in the present investigation. Early in 1948 after the work of this paper: was completed Campbell, Jaffee, Blocher, Gurland, and Gonser6 described the strength and working characteristics of pure titanium which was prepared by the iodide method on a scale producing 300 to 600 g per run, in the form of 0.3- to 0.4-in. diam rods. Their product is characterized by low hardness and large capacity for cold work which they attribute to a high degree of purity with respect to oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon. Titanium has a melting point of about 1725°C5 it may be classed as a light metal since the specific gravity is 4.5 g per cc-1. The crystal structure is close-packed hexagonal from room temperature t0 885°C. Above this temperature the structure is reported7 as body-centered cubic. The change in crystal structure has been associated with discontinuities in specific heat8 electric resistance9 and thermoelectric force10 at temperatures near 890°C. It is reported11 that annealed titanium has a tensile strength 0f 78,700 psi which can be increased by cold-work to 123,000 psi. In the present investigation, the lattice constants at room temperature, the thermal expansivity between 30 and 800°C, as well as the electrical resistivity and thermoelectric force against platinum between - 200 and 1000°C have been determined. MATERIALS For the measurements, two series of specimens were prepared from titanium furnished by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. The first was lade from an annealed sintered compact, 0.38 in. thick. Sections of the compact were cold-swaged with intermediate anneals in vacuum to the sizes used. Sizes over 0.25-in. diam were annealed at 1000°C and smaller sizes at 800°C. Specimens originating from the sintered compact are designated in this paper as A. The second series of specimens was lade from a rod of titanium, 0.19 in. in dial, which was cold-swaged with the necessary intermediate anneals to the required sizes. This series of specimens is designated B. The impurities in the specimens of titanium, determined by chemical analysis, are given in Table I. Oxygen and nitrogen which were not determined by analysis, are probably present although in small quantities in view of the ductility of the material.

This chapter on the Alaska Juneau mill is intended to make clear that "choice of methods," or the selection of proper methods, is the first essential step in launching a new enterprise; and to illustrate that when entering into new country where local conditions and physical features are new or strange to an engineer, he should respect the practices already adopted and followed in meeting peculiar conditions in these new countries that may seem strange to a casual visitor. For example, Americans going into Malay Peninsula with their most up-to-date machinery for drilling placer prospect holes found their cost to total about $3 per foot; by adopting native methods, it was found the same work could be done for 50 cents per foot. Also, those not used to frozen road conditions in a country of arctic climate might scrape the snow off such a road and cause unending road troubles into the following spring and summer; while natives understanding local conditions would leave the snow on the road. THE Sydney coal field, the largest and most valuable in Nova Scotia, is situated on the northeastern coast of the Island of Cape Breton, extending from Mira Bay on the south to Cape Dauphin on the north, a distance of 30 miles, and has a general dip northeast under the sea. (Fig. 1.) The field embraces the mining villages of Morien, Birchgrove and Reserve and the towns of Dominion, Glace Bay, Waterford and Sydney Mines. The city of Sydney is situated about midway between the northern and southern extremities of the field and on the western fringe of the productive coal measures. Sydney harbor crosses the coal field, cutting off direct rail connection between Sydney Mines and the greater part of the field to the southeast. (Fig. 2.) The coal measures are exposed in the cliffs on the coast line, which rise to an average height of 30 ft., and are almost continuous throughout the length of the field. The portion of the coal field under land forms a small segment of a circle, the greatest distance from the coast landwards is 9 miles, and it occupies an area of 200 sq. miles. The greatest distance developed seawards from the shore by mining operations is 2 ¼ miles. The strata maintain a regularity of dip at this distance, proving a submarine area of about 70 sq. miles. How much further the coal field extends seawards is unknown, but the indications are that it extends far beyond the present economical working limit and in all probability there is a vast submarine coal field. The productive coal measures are of Carboniferous age, these being underlaid by beds of sandstone, locally classed as millstone grit, which define the southern limit of the field,, while a spur of syenitic hills cuts off the coal-bearing strata on the north. Two main anticlinal folds having a general course easterly divide the field into three basins named from north to south: Sydney Mines-Lingan, Glace Bay and Morien.

Experiments on latent hardening were peyformed by compressing single crystals along a direction perpendicular to the tension axis. The slope and length of easy glide in the tension test were found to depend only on prior deformation in the same slip plane. Prior deformation on a different slip plane changes the stress level of the resulting stress-strain curve. The yield points appearing upon reloading after prior extension and unloading were related to the end of easy glide. SEVERAL researchers have studied the latent hardening due to deformation of a crystal by slip on a slip System after prior deformation. These experiments can be divided into those in which the prior deformation was on the same plane as the subsequent and those in which the two deformation processes were in different planes. In the former category are the experiments of Buckley and Entwistle,1 Parker and washburn,2 and Haasen and Kelly.3 The latter case has not been studied systematically; it was the main purpose of this investigation to produce this type of latent hardening and explain the results in terms of the existing theories of work hardening. In general, tension producing slip on a certain slip system can be preceded by tension, transverse compression or longitudinal compression, each with predictable dislocation movement and intersection. The intersection of dislocations can lead to glissile or sessile jogs, Cottrell-Lomer locks and other sessile dislocations. The effect on the stress-strain curve could depend on which combination of the former mechanisms is operating. Haasen and Kelly3 have studied the yield points which occur in aluminum and nickel single crystals upon reloading after prior unloading in a tension experiment. They attributed this effect to the anchoring of dislocations occurring during unloading. As Cottrell and stokes4 have shown that dislocations cutting through the "forest" could only lead to reversible changes, they attributed the anchoring to the formation of sessile dislocations during unloading. However, different kinds of sessile dislocations could be formed during unloading, and it was the purpose of this experiment to determine whether Cottrell-Lomer locks are responsible for the yield effect and for the end of easy glide. The case where a longitudinal compression is followed by tension along the same axis is commonly referred to as a Bauschinger test. This type of effect was studied by Buckley and Entwistle1 on aluminum single crystals and by Parker and washburn2 on zinc single crystals. In such a test, the tension and the compression activate the same slip plane with opposite slip directions. The use of sideways compression in the present experiments permits the activation of different types of slip systems and the study of their effect on the easy glide region and on the transition between the elastic and easy glide region. The theory of seeger5 for the flow stress in fee materials is applied to explain the latent hardening. EXPERTMENTAL PROCEDURE All the single crystals used in this investigation had an axial orientation close to <210>, called the "0.5" orientation. This is the orientation for which the tensile axis is 45 deg from both the slip plane and the slip direction. The single crystals were grown from the melt under a helium atmosphere using milled graphite boats,=at a rate of 8.6 mm per min. The silver used in the experiment was 99.98 pct pure. The single crystals had a square cross section about 0.9 by 0.9 cm and a length of 14 cm. The orientation of the specimen was determined within ±2 deg by the Laue back-reflection method. The specimens were annealed at 940&apos; ± 2°C in a helium atmosphere for 24 hr and then furnace cooled over a period of 7 hr. The specimens were electropolished in a solution of 9 pct KCN in water. The specimens were tested in a soft-type tensile machine (the load is prescribed) up to 3 pct strain. The stress was increased continuously at approximately 30 g per mm2 per min. The strain was measured over a 5 cm gage length with a mechanical extensometer employing an optical lever. The strain and stress were measured with accuracies of i 2 X 10-5 and ± 2 g per mm2, respectively. The remainder of the stress-strain curve up to 20 pct strain was obtained in a hard-type tensile machine (the strain rate is prescribed). The strain and the stress were measured in that machine with an accuracy of ±2 pct. The compression tests were performed in the hard-type machine using accurately machined steel blocks without lubrication. The blocks were used so as to apply a uniform compression over a length of 13 cm. The strains were measured on the hard-type machine and with a micrometer.

In the original design of the flue system, the flues from the roasters delivered their gases to a large brick dust chamber which discharged into another flue with stack connection, as shown in Fig. 1. The treater is so situated that the gases are taken by it directly from the chamber and discharged again into the flue. The complete installation comprises two treater units, only one of which has been installed at present. The treater is essentially a flue 1.0 ft. high, 12 ft. wide, and 61 ft. long. (3 by 3.6 by 18.5 m.). Suspended inside, vertically and running lengthwise, are four banks of No. 20 corrugated iron plates; each bank is 10 ft. long, making an effective treater length of 40 ft. With the close of 1932 and the third year of the depression, the activity of oil production presents, amidst the general wreckage and chaos of industrial society, a somewhat unique picture of rationalized economic effort. How long it will continue to present such a picture, however, is a subject for conflicting surmises. East Texas still dominates the contemporary horizon, but it has become, at least for the time being, a definitely known factor. With its 9500 wells it is approximately 90 per cent drilled up. So long as production control obtains, it is merely one important factor of the national oil reserve. Domestic Production The notable new discoveries in the United States were less numerous than for several years. Elsewhere in the world the record is much the same. The Conroe field in Montgomery County, Texas, lying in an intermediate zone that might be classified either as Gulf Coast or East Texas, represents perhaps the single example of a truly major discovery during the year. Elsewhere in Texas the new pool discoveries, about a dozen or so in number, were nearly all in the region known as Southwest Texas. Oklahoma contributed seven or eight new pools of the routine "run-of-mine" caliber, and the opening up of a few deeper oil pays also were of some significance. Continued expansion of the proved and semiproved reserves in Kansas added an important increment to the oil resources of that state. In California not a single new field was added to the roster, though deeper pay zones equivalent to or of greater importance than many new fields in other parts of the country were discovered or indicated. The new deep zone in the Belridge field is considered by some to underlie the prolific Temblor and may thus forecast the widespread distribution of a potentinl oil horizon underlying many San Joaquin Valley fields below the depths thus far exploited. The year 1938 was the most active and successful in the history of the oil industry in southern Louisiana. Drilling showed a 16 per cent increase over that of 1937, with a total of 538 wells drilled, which yielded 315 oil wells, 19 distillate wells, 4 gas wells and 200 dry holes. Nineteen new fields were discovered during the year, all but three of which were completed by plugging back to sands previously drilled through. Electrical logging played a large part in these new discoveries as well as in the discovery of new sands during routine development of fields. Fourteen of the new discoveries produced oil, and five produced only gas and distillate. Southern Louisiana continues to lead the world in depth of drilling, which is in part due to the great thickness of comparatively young deltaic sediments near the coast and the existence of numerous sands. The present development is rather evenly distributed over a coastal strip 100 miles wide. New Fields North Tepetate, Acadia Parish.—Atlantic Refining Company&apos;s No. 1 Klumpp was completed for a new field through perforations from 7960 to 7970 ft. The initial production was 65 bbl. of 54" gravity distillate and 4 million cubic feet of gas daily through a 1/4-in. choke with tubing pressure of 2850 Ib. and casing pressure of 2930 lb. The well is in see. 12, 7 S., 2 W., just north of Tepetate field. It was drilled to a depth of 8705 ft. and plugged back for its final completion. Atlantic&apos;s NO. 2 was completed in a new sand at 8300 ft., also for distillate. ComMercial steel sheet is prepared by a combination of hot and cold rolling and annealing. This treatment usually results in more or less pronounced anisotropy. The anisotropy may manifest itself both as preferred orientation and in the manner in which impurities, segregations, and the like, are aligned in the sheet. The type of preferred orientation and the organization of impurities or segregations may affect the elastic moduli, the yield strength, the tensile strength, and almost always the amount of ductility in different directions. In any case, the most important directions concerned in the anisotropy are along the rolling direction, along the width direction, and along the thickness direction. Considerable data exist on the anisot-ropy of sheet steel as demonstrated by conventional tensile tests; however, few attempts have been made to measure the constants of plastic anisotropy and use them to describe the flow of anisotropic sheet under combined stresses. In this paper, evidence is presented indicating that plastic flow in anisotropic sheet can be described by the shear-strain energy flow theory provided that the anisotropy is properly taken into account. Materials Used in the Investigation Table I lists the sheet materials used in this investigation and describes the condition in which materials were tested. Direction, of Tests and Test Methods Two types of tests were run—tensile tests and hydraulic-bulge tests. Characteristic parameters of anisotropy were determined from the tension tests by methods which will be described later. Detailed production statistics listing the operations according to producing sands, districts, etc., are not available for New York State and are scarcely obtainable without extraordinary effort and expense, hardly warranted by the current rate of developments. The oil industry is practically stabilized, so far as exploration for new sources of supply are concerned; no new pools have been tapped in the last 25 or 30 years. There is little prospect of extending the boundary of the oil fields beyond their present limits, though possibly some additional reserves may be found below the present productive sands. Natural gas, on the other hand, is not restricted to such confined areas. Drilling for gas has been fairly active, under the stimulation of some important finds in formations that previously were overlooked. The year&apos;s field operations will be covered somewhat fully. Oil production, which has been steadily advancing for a number of years, showed a further moderate gain in 1936. The output for 11 months (figures for December are not yet available) was 4,217,000 bbl., indicating a total for the year of around 4,600,000 bbl. The increase was about 10 per cent, a rate maintained for some time. Prices were more satisfactory than in the preceding five years, with an advance to $2.57 a barrel before the year&apos;s close. New York State yield is all paraffin-base, in the same class with high-grade Pennsylvania oil. Most of the output is now obtained by the water drive, which has given a new lease of life to the fields and promises to bring the total to about 200,000,000 bbl. before the known acreage has been exhausted by this method. Before its introduction the annual production was under 1,000,000 bbl. a year. The fields cover an aggrcgate area of 55,000 acres, with some 17,000 wells in operation. Development Exploring for natural gas in New York in 1936 outside of the old established pools continued actively, as in the previous year. There was an increase in total initial production.
