Low metal prices prevailing at the beginning of 1950 stimulated the search for improved mining methods. More experience was gained during the year with such new developments as the jackleg drill, millisecond delays as applied underground, trackless mining, and Diesel powered equipment. One of the outstanding innovations in mining practice was the starting of the Round Mountain "dry land gold dredging operation." The Government is now inviting the mining industry to open up every available source of new metal supply and this circumstance will undoubtedly speed the development of new machines. New methods will also result but it is doubtful if economic efficiency will be at its peak.

SINCE 1925, when the preferred orientations in compressed aluminum were first determined1, 2 the orientations have been described as a fiber texture in which a face diagonal, [110], of the face-centered cubic lattice is parallel to the compression axis. Subsequent experiments have seemed to confirm this texture,3-5 and a number of theories (recently summarized in references 6 and 7) have been proposed to explain it and to relate it to the behavior of single crystals during compression. 3,8-11 The experiments reported in this paper prove that the orientations are not adequately described as quoted above-i.e., as a [110] fiber texture-although this is a first approximation to the actual texture. They also show that the texture cannot be thought of as a stable orienta-tion that is reached and maintained after a sufficient amount of deforma-tion. The actual texture, when studied in detail at successive stages of compression, indicates that a hitherto unsuspected range of orientations is present, both in the polycrystalline metal as a whole and in various individual grains in its interior, and that a state of dynamic equilibrium exists within this range. The reasons for the failure of previous theories to predict the actual texture become obvious when the heterogeneous nature of the flow is considered. In addition to the deformation texture, the manner of its develop-ment, and its theory, this paper presents data on the following related subjects: the identity of strain markings in aluminum; the orientation changes in aluminum single crystals during compression and a com-parison of these with the conditions in individual grains of a polycrystal-line specimen; the origin of asterism in deformed single crystals, which heretofore has been regarded as a distortion localized at the surfaces of slip planes; and the relation of plastic strain in individual grains in an aggregate to the strain of the whole.

THE speed of drilling rock has become an impor-tant factor in mining operations, while the place-ment of holes, kind, and quantity of explosive used. are equally important. These are a function of the rock hardness and toughness. Both of these fac-tors must be considered in compiling a table that will enable a mine operator or engineer to estimate drilling speeds in a given rock, knowing its hardness, and from its toughness, the dynamite required. The hardness of a homogeneous rock may be defined as its resistance to a penetrating medium, such as a drill-steel bit, and toughness, its resistance to with-stand rupture by the tearing apart of its minerals or parts of the same mineral. Rock hardness, as it has here been defined, is a function of the hardness of the component grains composing it, as well as grain size, shape, arrangement, and binding minerals. Rock tough-ness depends on substantially the same factors, but is measured by a totally different method. The units in which rock hardness is usually ex-pressed are either relative values or alphabetical desig-nations which carry no definite quantitative meaning. R. M. Raymond has suggested the measurement of com-posite rock hardness, based on mineral hardness as ob-tained by the Moh scale. This is done by multiplying the percentage of each mineral in a rock by the Moh mineral hardness and dividing by 100. These values convey a clearer conception in the minds of men in-terested in rock work -and are the basis of the units used in Tables 1 and 2. The hardness of rocks as it has been variously de-fined may be determined by different methods. The first method is one in which the proportionate average of the hardness of minerals making up a rock is the basis for classification. The other factors of grain size, shape, arrangement, and binding power are not considered.

BY plotting fixed carbon against British thermal units of coals free from mineral matter, and ranging in rank from anthracite to lignite, it is found that the coals of higher rank, from anthracite to the higher rank of the high-volatile bituminous coals, inclusive, can be separated into groups according to their degree of metamorphism by reference to their fixed carbon. Such charts show also that the coals lower in rank can be best separated into groups with respect to B.t.u., especially when plotted on the moist basis, that is, coal containing its natural bed moisture. A tentative scheme for coal classification was presented at the October, 1932, meeting of the Technical Committee on Scientific Classification, of the American Standards Association Sectional Com-mittee on Coal Classification. This scheme was sponsored by Sub-committee IV on Tentative Classification of Coals, under the chairmanship of W. T. Thom, Jr. It proposed the grouping of coals according to rank by reference to fixed carbon and B.t.u., on the basis of coal containing its natural bed moisture but free from mineral matter. This scheme proposed classifying coals into four broad classes: (1) anthracitic, (2) bituminous, (3) subbituminous, (4) lignitic.. The anthracitic class was divided into three groups designated as meta-anthracite, normal anthracite, and semianthracite. The bituminous class also was divided into three groups, low volatile, medium volatile, and high volatile. The high-volatile group was further subdivided into four subgroups according to moisture content, as follows: (1) less than 5 per cent, (2) 5 to 10 per cent, (3) 10 to 15 per cent, and (4) 15 per cent and more. The subbituminous class was divided into two groups, group, 1 including subbituminous coals having calorific values of 10,500 B.t.u. or more, and group 2 including those with less than 10,500 B.t.u. , The lignitic class of coal was divided into two groups both below 8,000.B.t.u., the one group consisting of consolidated and the other of unconsolidated

THE first method of working coal mines in the middle western states, more particularly in Illinois, Indiana and Missouri, was by means of the so-called single-entry method. In this method a single main passageway, or entry, was driven in the coal seam. with no parallel passageways, and from this pas-sageway or entry there were turned at intervals sim-ilar cross-passageways or entries, and from these cross-passageways, if the coal seam worked lay fairly horizontal, rooms were turned right and left. These crude methods of working were followed when the com-panies opening the mines were small and of very limited capital, and when the demand for coal was small and irregular. The principal desire was to produce coal in the short-est possible time and at the cheapest price. The chief evil resulting from such method of working was de-fective ventilation, although there were other serious drawbacks. There were then few or no good mining laws and no restrictions on those operating the coal mines. The hours of labor were long, the wages low, and the miners accordingly worked hard. All the coal was either sheared or undercut with a pick by hand. Very little solid shooting and no machine mining was done. What little air entered the mine, openings was introduced through the entries or. headings and thence conducted through the rooms by means of curtains; in many cases, as the workings became more exten-sive, the number of curtains added so materially to the mine resistance that ventilation was extremely in-efficient. Shots were fired by the miners at any time during the working shift and consequently there was more or less powder smoke or fumes in the mine work-ings all day long. Moreover, the working days were much longer than at present. The fine, dry coal-dust falling from the miners' picks while they were shear-ing or undercutting the coal filled the mine atmosphere and was taken into the lungs of the mine employees.

(written discussion*).-In connection with Mr. Waring's quotation of Urbain's work, attention may be drawn to a remark found in the report of the session of the Société de Chimie Physique,1 held in December, 1909, that, while all blendes contain gallium in larger or smaller quantities, those blendes carrying indium are generally free from germanium, and vice versa. Urbain, furthermore, . expresses his conviction that this behavior, being related to the condi-tions of deposition of the ore, should be an important factor in determining the origin and mode of formation of zinc blende deposits., In. searching the literature for the naturally expected sequel to these remarks, there is found a report on the extraction of germanium from blende, after many months' work, on a commercial scale;2 then a paper3 on some Spanish blendes, all containing cadmium, examined by Urbain's 'method (this paper contains, also, very important work on the com-position and color of blendes, as well as on the occurrence of organic .matter and of inclusions in such blendes), and a second paper on Spanish blendes in general, in which this original point of Urbain's concerning the relative quantities of the three rare elements is taken up.4 Angel del Campo finds that of 68 specimens examined, four only were entirely free of germanium, gallium, and indium;. 38 had small proportions, while 19 were notably, and seven relatively rich in the three rare metals. He found the relative frequency to be: gallium in 60, germanium in, 50, and indium in 38; all three occurred in 29 cases; germanium and gallium together in 18; gallium and indium together in four; germanium and indium together without gallium, in none; four had gallium only, three had germanium only, and one had indium only; in 23 it appeared feasible to extract these elements. This paper is in the nature of a rough preliminary report on the progress that has been made in the application of the mass spectrometer to various problems arising in the petroleum industry. A few years ago the authors considered a number of the problems that were arising in the qualitative and quantitative measurement of small amounts of hydrocarbons. The methods available of making analyses by chemical techniques appeared to leave much room for improvement. Without going into the reasons at this point, attention was turned to the possibility of employing physical instead of chemical methods of accomplish-ing the desired results. A preliminary investigation disclosed that the mass spectrometer presented a possibility of solving many problems which could not easily be accomplished by other methods. Work was begun in developing the necessary apparatus and technique. A great deal of encouragement and many valuable suggestions were received from Dr. Robert A. Millikan, Dr. W. R. Smythe, and Dr. W. N. Lacey, of the California Institute of Technology, and from Dr. E. 0. Lawrence, who recently received the Nobel Prize, of the University of California. The authors particularly wish to acknowl-edge the very great willingness of these out-standing scientists to be helpful in solving many of the problems that were involved. So far as the authors are aware, this was the first application of the mass spectrometer to commercial work. The results were considerably better than had at first been anticipated. Briefly, it is pos-sible to run a qualitative and quantitative analysis of an unknown mixture of hydro-carbon gases, with an accuracy of better than plus or minus 5 per cent of each of the various constituents. An exceedingly high degree of sensitivity has been obtained, and a relatively short time is required to com-plete an analysis. Furthermore, it is un-necessary to separate a mixture of gases into its various components in order to complete the analysis.

The formation and growth of Guinier-Preston zones in Al-Zn alloys containing 4.4, 6.8, 9.7, and 12.4 at. pct zn have been studied by the X-ray small-angle scattering method. Particular attention was paid to the effects of small amounts of third elements silver, silicon, and magnesium on the formation and growth of G.P. zones. It was noticed that an appreciable number of G.P. zones were formed during the course of rapid cooling and that the size, volume fraction, and number of these G.P. zones were influenced by the existence of the third elements. During subsequent aging it was also found that the addition of both silver and silicon lowered the temperature for the growth of G.P. zones, whereas the addition of magnesium raised it. These results were explained in terms of the mutual interactions among zinc atoms, vacancies, and the third elements. A number of studies on the formation and growth of Guinier-Preston zones in Al-Zn alloys have been reported.1-4 Panseri and Federighii have found that the initial stages of zone growth take place at temperatures as low as around -100°C. For investigation of the mechanism of the initial stages of zone growth, growth studies must be carried out at low temperatures. In order to investigate the possibility of the formation of G.P. zones by the nucleation mechanism or the spinodal decomposition during quenching which was reported by Rundman and Hilliard,5 the examination of the as-quenched structure must be performed. In this paper the investigation of the early stages of the formation and growth were determined by means of the X-ray small-angle scattering method. With this technique, change of X-ray scattering intensities was measured while quenched specimens were heated slowly from liquid-nitrogen temperature to room temperature. At as-quenched state and after heated to room temperature, investigation of zone size, volume fraction, and zone number per unit volume was carried out. Measurements on these specimens yielded information on the early stages of zone formation and growth. Measurements were made also on specimens quenched to and aged at room temperature. From these measurements the previously reported model6 for the later stages of growth is confirmed; namely, the larger zones grow at the expense of smaller ones. Three elements, silver, silicon, and magnesium, were chosen as the third elements for the following reasons: Silver. In the binary A1-Ag alloy the spherical disordered 77' zones were observed immediately after quenching.7 Therefore, in the Al-Zn-Ag alloys, it is suggested that silver atoms might induce cluster formation during quenching. Also, since the migration energy of the zinc atoms was found to be raised by the addition of silver atoms,' silver atoms may have a great effect of the zinc diffusion, especially during low-temperature agings. Silicon. The effects of the addition of silicon atoms were found to be marked, especially at low-tempera-ture aging. In the binary Zn-Si system, no mutual solid solubilities between silicon and zinc9 and no in-termetallic compounds10 are reported to exist. Shashkov and Buynov11 investigated the behavior of silicon atoms in Al-Zn alloys and showed that silicon was not in the G.P. zones. The interaction between silicon atoms and vacancies is strong enough to increase the quenched-in vacancy concentration.* Magnesium. Magnesium atoms are reported to trap quenched-in vacancies and after much longer aging times these trapped vacancies will become free and act as diffusion carriers.13 Therefore at intermediate aging times, the diffusion of zinc atoms in Al-Zn-Mg alloys will be slower than in the binary Al-Zn alloys, whereas at longer times zinc diffusion will become faster. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloys used in this investigation had compositions of 4.4, 6.8, 9.7, and 12.4 at. pct Zn with or without 0.1 and 0.5 at. pct Ag, Si, or Mg. The alloys were prepared from high-purity aluminum, zinc, silver, silicon, and magnesium, with each metal having a purity better than 99.99 pct. The analyzed composition of the specimens is given in Table I. The measurements of the X-ray small-angle scattering were carried out with foils of 0.20 mm thick. The change of the scattering intensity was always measured at the fixed scattering angle of 20 = 2/3 deg. This angle exists nearly on the position of the intensity maximum. The value of the interparticle interference function14 which has large effect in this range of angles may not change abruptly in the case of the spherical shape of small zones. Therefore, from the above considerations, it is concluded that an increase of the intensity measured at this constant angle corresponds to an increase of the average radius and volume fraction of G.P. zones. IN its dual role of pig-iron smelter and gas producer, the blast furnace is a remarkably satisfactory and efficient apparatus. Many metallurgists and engineers have pointed out, however, that since the primary function of the blast furnace is to produce pig iron at the lowest possible cost, its function as a gas producer should be subordinated to this primary pur-pose. During the past 10 years or more, improvements in blast-furnace technique and economy have, in fact, been directed primarily to increasing efficiency in the use of the reducing power of the gases produced by com-bustion of coke at the tuyeres, to reduce iron ore within the furnace. The net over-all result is a decrease in the fuel value of the top gas per unit of volume, and per ton of pig iron, which is evidently more than offset in value by the corollary saving in coke and the possibility of increased furnace capacity, for otherwise there would be no point in making such improvements. The purpose of the present paper is to suggest that, while progress has been made in this direction, there is another approach to the problem of increasing the chemical and thermal efficiency of the blast furnace in its primary role as a pig-iron smelter, which appears to offer possibilities of improvement in over-all economy of a different order of magnitude than results thus far obtained by the use of other expedients. The present argument is based in large part upon the hypothesis that the effi-ciency and economics of pig-iron smelting are seriously and adversely affected by the phenomenon known as "solution loss," and that the problem of solution loss can be successfully attacked by increasing the over-all pressure; i.e., the "top pressure" under which the furnace is operated. It is indicated that pressure operation may also be expected to result in concomitant benefits, which may be summed up as generally improved operating conditions, together with a substantial saving in fuel and/or a substantial increase in furnace capacity.

The cost of drilling in the past few years of proration and ever decreasing allowables has received increasing thought and study. It seems to parallel the strides made with respect to pumping problems in 1932 and 1933. Low profit margins stimulate the search for economies. Any discussion of slim-hole drilling involves a multitude of abstract values, and the problem can be attacked only by a study of records and rational thinking. In a measure, traditional methods must be studied with a questioning attitude. The words "slim hole" may be somewhat misleading, as the term is entirely relative. For that reason I wish to define it as used in this discussion. On the Gulf Coast, I would define a normal hole as one in which 10 3/4-in. surface casing has been set and below which a 9 7/8-in. hole is dug. With this as a datum, holes of larger diameter below surface would be called "large holes," with 121/4 in. as the "extra large" class and holes of smaller diameter classed in the slim-hole range, 6 1/4 in. representing about the minimum size. The optimum size has not been definitely determined, but the preference is for a program that would call for setting 8 5/8 -in. surface casing and digging a 7 3/4 - in. hole. Different sections of the country might very properly deviate from this practice because of differences in depth, formations, regulations, or other factors. This paper will be confined to a discussion of the drilling of exploratory wells, as the drilling of this class of wells is quite a different problem from that of drilling a proven field, although many of the same considerations apply in both cases, as will be apparent. Although for many years shallow slim-hole and core-test holes of small diameter had been dug, it was not, I believe, until the fall of 1937 that serious consideration was given to its application in drilling wells 7000 ft., 8000 ft. and 9000 ft. deep on the Gulf Coast. This does not mean that nearly all such wells drilled on the Gulf Coast now are of the slim-hole variety, but only that efforts have been aimed in that direction with very encouraging results and there has been a very definite trend to reduce the size of holes, a trend that probably will continue. As to exploration policy, there appear to be two distinct and opposite views. The one usually followed in the past was more or less designed to "shoot the works" on one well. Generally on the Gulf Coast, the depth at which production might be obtained is limited by the drilling equipment and economics. BRAZIL has had an industry based on ocean beach deposits of heavy minerals containing monazite, zircon, rutile, and ilmenite for well over 40 years, but except at the very earliest period, prior to 1906, and again during World War 11, has this industry been at all comparable in size with similar operations in other countries. Limiting factors have been neither a lack of reserves nor lack of markets (except for zircon). Although poor local transportation and shipping facilities have handicapped the development in Brazil, these conditions were perhaps equally bad (when mining operations started) in the Indian State of Travancore, and in New South Wales and Queensland, Australia, in which states the principal production of beach deposits of heavy minerals has occurred. The outstanding restraints on the Brazilian industry have been the lower quality of the Brazilian minerals, the relative small size of individual deposits that were known until recently, the lack of interest of Brazilian investors in mining ventures, and the unfavorable climate for investment of foreign capital under Brazilian mining law. The lower quality of the minerals is indicated by the fact that the Brazilian monazite carries only 5 to 6 pct Tho2*, and the ilmenite 561/2 pct TiO2, whereas the corresponding Travancore minerals carry 9 pct Tho, and 60 pct TiO, respectively. The Brazilian zircon is a dirty brown color (which can be removed readily) as compared with the gleaming whiteness of the Australian zircon. An inadequate market for the abundant zircon that will be available in any operation in Brazil is certainly a heavy restraint, since otherwise it could be an important byproduct. The oxide of zirconia, baddeleyite, that has come from Brazil is from other sources.' Since the Brazilian beach sands carry only a little rutile, that mineral has not been available as a valuable byproduct to help finance the operations. Substantial tonnages of rutile have been exported from Brazil. The sources of this mineral are stream placers and residual deposits over gneisses in the States of Goyaz, Minas Geraes, Ceara, etc. (Leonardos,' and Chambers". With these handicaps, Brazilian production from beach sands has been marginal, and there has been only one consistent producer. This is a company, originally French, which was called Companie de Franco-BrazilliCne, but, with the downfall of France in 1940, became Brazilian under the name Monazita e Ilmenita do Brasil ("Mibra"). This company has operated several deposits in the vicinity of Guara-pary, in the State of Espirito Santo. Its office and plant has been at Guarapary. Recently a company called, "Fomil" (Fomento Monazita-Ilmenita) started operations. This company was organized by the Foote Mineral Co. of Philadelphia, and such share as a foreign company can hold under Brazilian law has now been acquired by the Lindsay Light and Chemical Co. of Chicago. When the writer went to Brazil in the fall of 1940, he found that no general survey of the beaches had been made except for a thorough study of part of the area by Abreu.4 The paper by Miranda6 had not then been written. The federal Geological Survey and Department of Mines knew only of the existence of the deposits in Espirito Santo south of Vitoria, and had a hazy idea that others might be found north of Vitoria. One deposit in Bala was known in Rio, but the larger one at Guaratiba was not known, although a Frenchman had prospected

This is a company, originally French, which was called Companie de Franco-BrazilliCne, but, with the downfall of France in 1940, became Brazilian under the name Monazita e Ilmenita do Brasil ("Mibra"). This company has operated several deposits in the vicinity of Guara-pary, in the State of Espirito Santo. Its office and plant has been at Guarapary. Recently a company called, "Fomil" (Fomento Monazita-Ilmenita) started operations. This company was organized by the Foote Mineral Co. of Philadelphia, and such share as a foreign company can hold under Brazilian law has now been acquired by the Lindsay Light and Chemical Co. of Chicago. When the writer went to Brazil in the fall of 1940, he found that no general survey of the beaches had been made except for a thorough study of part of the area by Abreu.4 The paper by Miranda6 had not then been written. The federal Geological Survey and Department of Mines knew only of the existence of the deposits in Espirito Santo south of Vitoria, and had a hazy idea that others might be found north of Vitoria. When I was honored by being invited to give the Howe Memorial Lecture, I decided to read Howe's book, "The Metallography of Steel and Cast Iron," published in I9I6—that is, about 25 years ago—in search of a text. I found the book written in fine, clear, attractive, yet precise style, as I expected, knowing that his father— Dr. Samuel Gridley Howe, his mother— Julia Ward Howe, and all of his four brothers and sisters had lived in a New England literary atmosphere and had written books. This leads me to suggest that many authors of metallurgical papers and books could well study Howe's writings with a view to the improvement of their own. I failed to find a specific text, but did find a subject, for in reading his book I was struck by the few instances in which time is considered explicitly as a factor in the phenomena examined, and by the fact that many of the hottest arguments would have been settled had time been taken properly into account. Indeed, Howe hardly mentions time except in a rather incidental way, as in a few references to lag; for instance: The lowering of temperature at which the transformation occurs by rapid cooling . . . is a phenomenon of undercooling or lag. It is in part explained by the fact that the transformation itself is a time-consuming reaction which, setting in during a rapid fall of temperature, is naturally protracted till the temperature has sunk far below that at which it is due. He does discuss, quite fully, the iron-clrbon equilibrium diagram, as known at that time, introducing it by stating: As he is a reasonable man who is not deterred from using a hand truck for moving his trunk by the consideration that he has thus to move a trunk plus a truck, so am I reasonable in putting into your hands this useful, indeed indispensable. tool for mastering the ABC of iron metallurgy. The thermal decomposition of cupric sulfate and of cupric oxysulfate has been examined by deter-mining the equilibrium gas pressure generated over each pure compound. The equilibrium data have been used to calculate the thermodynamic properties of both compounds, and the results have been combined with previously published data to establish a predominance-volume diagram for the Cu-S-O system over the normal range of roasting temperature and gas composition used in the treatment of copper minerals. Copper oxysulfate recrystal-lizes at 1100°K with an apparently irreversible en-dothermic heat requirement of 2.9 * 0.3 kcal per mole. WHEN mixed sulfide minerals containing copper are roasted, either of two procedures may be followed, depending on the nature of the other metals. In the first procedure, the roasting is controlled to produce a maximum amount of water-soluble copper sulfate which may be removed selectively from the water-insoluble compounds of the other metals. In the second, control is directed toward the production of water-soluble sulfates of the other metals and an insoluble salt of copper. Effective control of either of these processes would be enhanced by knowledge of the thermal stability of cupric sulfate and of cupric oxysulfate. In this paper, established data for the thermal stability of cuprous and cupric sulfide and of cuprous and cupric oxide will be combined with new data for the therma1 stability of cupric sulfate and cupric oxysulfate, to designate the volumes of stability of the significant compounds in the Cu-S-O system in the temperature range 750° to 950°K. EXPERIMENTAL Materials, Apparatus, and Procedure. The copper source material used in all experiments was Fisher Certified Reagent Grade "anhydrous" cupric sulfate, for which the following analysis was supplied by the manufacturer: chloride, 0.002 pct; alkalies and earths, 0.2 pct; insoluble, 0.002 pct; iron, 0.020 pct. Cupric oxysulfate was prepared from the normal sulfate by two procedures. In the first, equimolar quantities of cupric oxide (prepared by decomposition of the sulfate) and cupric sulfate were ground together and heated under vacuum in a sealed silica vessel at 800°C. This procedure was subject to failure because of explosion of the silica vessels due to the pressure of the final traces of water released from the sulfate on the initiation of its decomposition. The second procedure involved roasting the cupric sulfate, with frequent rabbling, in a muffle furnace at 725°C for a period of 48 hr. This produced an excellent product, which was confirmed as copper oxysulfate by X-ray and chemical analyses. The experimental technique used was that of measuring the total pressure exerted by the sulfur trioxide, sulfur dioxide, and oxygen produced by the following reactions: 2 CuS04 = cuo • CuSO4 + SO3 [1] cuo . CuSO4 = 2 cuo + SO3 [2] SO3= SO2 + 1/2 O2 [3] The apparatus used in the experiments has been described previously.1-3 Its main feature of a U-tube mercury manometer in which the mercury is protected from corrosion by enclosure in a flexible Pyrex bellows. THE cost of drilling in the past few years of proration and ever decreasing allowables has received increasing thought and study. It seems to parallel the strides made with respect to pumping problems in 1932 and 1933. Low profit margins stimulate the search for economies. Any discussion of slim-hole drilling involves a multitude of abstract values, and the problem can be attacked only by a study of records and rational thinking. In a measure, traditional methods must be studied with a questioning attitude. The words "slim hole" may be somewhat misleading, as the term is entirely relative. For that reason I wish to define it as used in this discussion. On the Gulf Coast, I would define a normal hole as one in which 10 3/4-in. surface casing has been set and below which a 9 7/8-in. hole is dug. With this as a datum, holes of larger diameter below surface would be called "large holes," with 12 1/4 in. as the "extra large" class and holes of smaller diameter classed in the slim-hole range, 6 1/4 in. representing about the minimum size. The optimum size has not been definitely determined, but the preference is for a program that would call for setting 8 5/8-in. surface casing and digging a 7 3/4-in. hole. Different sections of the country might very properly deviate from this practice because of differences in depth, formations, regulations, or other factors. This paper will be confined to a discussion of the drilling of exploratory wells, as the drilling of this class of wells is quite a different problem from that of drilling a proven field, although many of the same considerations apply in both cases, as will be apparent. Although for many years shallow slim-hole and core-test holes of small diameter had been dug, it was not, I believe, until the fall of 1937 that serious consideration was given to its application in drilling wells 7000 ft., 8000 ft. and 9000 ft. deep on the Gulf Coast. This does not mean that nearly all such wells drilled on the Gulf Coast now are of the slim-hole variety, but only that efforts have been aimed in that direction with very encouraging results and there has been a very definite trend to reduce the size of holes, a trend that probably will continue. As to exploration policy, there appear to be two distinct and opposite views. The one usually followed in the past was more or less designed to "shoot the works" on one well. Generally on the Gulf Coast, the depth at which production might be obtained is limited by the drilling equipment and economics. With this thought in mind, wildcat wells are often planned with the idea of carrying the depth to 10,000 ft., or even 15,000 ft. All of the possible hazards are anticipated and the general drilling and casing programs are so predicated. Such wells contemplate the drilling of large-diameter holes; the setting of at least one protective string of casing and an extensive coring policy, all of which finally adds up to an expensive well. As opposed to this general policy is the slim hole. This, on the Gulf Coast, recognizes that new discoveries represent gam-

THE equilibrium diagram of the indium-thallium system was of interest to us in connection with a study of the superconducting properties of metallic solid solutions in progress at this Institute. For this purpose, a series of alloys was prepared covering the range from pure indium to 75 atomic pet TI, and X-ray diffraction patterns were obtained. Roughly speaking, the results indicated a region of continuous decrease in the axial ratio of the face-centered tetragonal structure from the value ca. 1.08 in pure indium to unity at about 23 atomic pct TI. From this concentration to the solubility limit, the structure was face-centered cubic, a form not reported by Hansen.1 At this point we became aware of the work of Valentiner,2 who had found the same structures at room temperature but had not investigated further the relationship between them. To study the transformation f.c.c.??f.c.t., and to clarify the phase diagram, we undertook the work reported in this paper and that which follows." Preparation of Alloys Pure indium and thallium* (both about 99.9 pct, as estimated from spectroscopic analyses) were weighed out in quantities sufficient to prepare 10 to 25 g of alloy of the desired concentration. (Occasionally indium was mixed with a previously pre- pared solution.) The metals were melted over a flame, in an open graphite crucible, stirred with a graphite rod, and poured into a graphite trough. The rough slug was hammered and swaged into a rod of 2 to 3 mm diam, and annealed in a drying oven at about 125°C for 1 to 2 days. Samples were taken from the rod for analysis, as well as for diffraction and other measurements. The thallium was determined by electrometric titration, using a modification of the method of Beale and co-workers.' The precision of analysis was generally about 2 0.2 pct of the thallium content. The rods were sometimes found to vary in thallium content as much as 1.5 pct from end to end, but since analyses were also made close to the segments used in the various studies, the composition was usually known as accurately as the analyses could be made. Where one less significant figure is given, the error is estimated to be ±0.4 pct of the thallium content. X-Ray Diffraction Measurements Three different cameras were used: (1) A 7 cm Debye camera, with oscillating specimen (manufactured by the Picker X-ray Corp., Cleveland, Ohio); (2) a 9 cm diam Debye camera of the type designed by Bradley;" (3) a 10 cm diam symmetrical focusing back-reflection camera (manufactured by Geo. C. Wyland, Ramsay, N. J.). Samples were prepared from the homogenized rods, either by filing under liquid nitrogen, or more often, in the form of wires or foils made by working at room temperature or liquid nitrogen temperature. Sharp patterns were obtained from specimens annealed at room temperature, although higher annealing temperatures were also used (cf. below). The Pu-In phase diagram has been determined by thevmal, filtvation, micrographic, and X-ray diffraction methods. This alloy system is characterized by 1) limited solubility of indium (-2 at. pet) in 6 and e plutonium, 2) one eutectic, and 3) fizte intermediate phases. Of the latter, PuIn and PuIn3 melt con-gruently, and Pu31n, Pu31n5, and the high-temperatuve 7 solid solution are formed peritectically. The n phase decomposes eutectoidally into Pu3In and PuIn at 865°C. Although the 6 phase can readily be retained to room temperature, it is not thermo-dynamically stable below 300°C. The Pu-In system has been investigated at Los Alamos as part of a study of the alloys of plutonium with the group 111-B elements. Constitutional studies of the Pu-A1 and Pu-Ga systems have been reported earlier.'9' To date, published information on the constitution of Pu-In alloys covers only the identification of the intermediate phases Pu3In and PuIn3.3,4 EXPERIMENTAL The alloys were prepared from five different lots of plutonium and three different lots of indium. The principal impurities in the plutonium differed from lot to lot within the following limits (in ppm): iron, 30 to 80; nickel, 30 to 60; aluminum, 15 to 30; silicon, 20 to 145: thorium, 50 to 300; carbon, 75 to 335; and oxygen, 20 to 135. Spectroanalysis of the indium showed that two of the lots were 99.9 wt pct pure, and the third was 99.98 wt pct pure. The alloys, in the form of about 5-g buttons, were prepared by arc melting in conventional equipment. The components for each alloy were weighed to the nearest 0.1 mg. In most instances the weight losses during melting were negligible; therefore confirmatory chemical analyses were usually not made. A few results are given in Table I. Density measurements of the arc-cast buttons were made by the liquid displacement of bromoben-zene. Heat treating was done in muffle furnaces controlled to +2°C. The alloy buttons were wrapped in tantalum foil before being enclosed in evacuated clear silica capsules. As a precaution against breakage, each capsule was in turn placed in a silica tube closed with a refractory wool plug prior to being charged into the furnace. For a moderately fast quench of the alloys, the outer protection tubes containing the capsules were plunged into cold water. Differential thermal analyses (DTA) in racuo were performed at heating and cooling rates of about 1.5°C per min. Tantalum crucibles having inverted thermocouple wells were used for most of the analyses. It was found micrographically, however, that the liquid alloys containing more than about 35 at. pct In reacted with the tantalum, resulting in contamination of the surface of the alloy. A search for a more satisfactory crucible material was not successful: tungsten and yttria behaved comparably to tantalum; thoria, vitrified magnesia, and vitrified alumina severely contaminated the alloys. Even with the best geological maps, there is a constant need for further information and a constant demand for new clues, particularly in exploration work. New ideas and new thoughts are a necessity for progress. In the structural study of an area, be it in Arizona, Africa, or British Columbia, the basic fracture pattern has to be determined first. There is, however, no assurance that the trends shown on the map are really meaningful because they often are secondary in nature, having occurred as a consequence of an intrusion, of doming, or of gravity faulting. Thus, such trends often are a weak basis for assuming the presence of ancient and important zones of fractures that could constitute useful guides to mineral exploration.
