DISCOVERY of natural gas in the Dundee field of New York in February, 1930, and the subsequent discovery in Tioga in September of that year, focused the attention of the natural-gas industry on the enormous possibilities of production and distribution in - the most populous area of the United States-New York and New England. Prior to 1926 the natural-gas industry in New York State had settled into a definite and limited policy, with the distributing companies controlling the output from its discovery to the ultimate consumer. Production amounted to between G and 7 thousand mil- lion cubic feet a year, with another 10,000 million feet imported from Pennsylvania for distribution in New York State. This gas was primarily from the Medina sand stone in. the western part of the state.

IN isothermal recrystallization processes, new crystals generally grow into the matrix until they impinge upon other new crystals or an external surface, at constant linear rates G. Before impingement the perceptible course of growth can be described by the equation: 1 = G(t-7) C1I where, G = dl/dt, 1 is a crystal dimension measured in a constant direction, t is the time, and 7, the nucleation period, is a positive intercept on the time axis. Fig. 1 is a schematic representation of I as a function of time for a recrystallizing grain. G is dependent upon temperature, driving energy (strain or surface energy), relative grain and boundary orientations, but is generally independent of time. The frequency of nucleation, fi, (time" volume") can be defined by the equation: N = 1/fV [2] where ? is the mean nucleation period and V is the volume of the specimen that has not recrystallized. The kinetics of primary and secondary recrystallization generally can be described satisfactorily in terms of the parameters N and G only.'-" After recrystallization is complete the average grain size 7 increases with time by "normal grain growth;" didt, the average rate of grain growth, is strongly time dependent and has not yet been precisely related to G for the motion of the individual grain boundaries constituting the system. It has been suggested4* " that the elementary act in grain boundary migration is closely related to the elementary act in grain boundary self-diffusion. Although the distance of atom movement in the two processes may be somewhat different, there is reason to expect that the activated states may be very similar, so that the free energy of activation for grain boundary migration should be of the same order of magnitude as for grain boundary self-diffusion. Therefore, it is desirable to develop a satisfactory basis for comparing data on self-diffusion and grain boundary migration and to make such comparisons where possible. Theory The formal theory of grain boundary migration rates is analogous to the theory for the rate of growth of crystals into supercooled liquids reviewed elsewhere 6-8. Boreliuss has shown that the latter theory describes, within the theoretical uncertainty, the growth of selenium crystals into supercooled liquid selenium. Motto and more recently Smolu-chowski" have derived expressions for the rate of boundary migration in recrystallization. The treatment to be presented is similar to Mott's excepting that the formalism of the absolute reaction rate theory will be used. The atomic mobility, M, in grain boundary migration is defined by: G = -M6p/6x where p is the chemical potential per atom and x is the coordinate measured in the direction of grain boundary movement. Let AF be the free energy difference per gram atom on the two sides of the boundary and k the thickness of the boundary. For RT>>AF the potential gradient across the boundary (6p/6x) is essentially linear and it follows that: SF/8x = - aF/N\ [4] where N is Avogadro's number. According to the Nernst-Einstein equation, M is related to a diffusion coefficient, Do, for matter transport in grain boundary migration by the equation: M = Da/kT [5] Substituting eqs 4 and 5 into eq 3 gives the basic relation between Do and G: G = DoaF/\RT [6] Do values may be calculated from experimental values of G from eq 6 and directly compared with the coefficient of self-diffusion within the crystal, DL, or the grain boundary self-diffusion coefficient D,. However, a more convenient, though equivalent, basis for comparing atomic mobility in grain boundary migration and self-diffusion is through the constants of the absolute reaction rate theory. According to this theory diffusion coefficients may be written:" D = k2(kT/h) exp [-AF,/RT] 171 aFa, the free energy of activation, is related to the measured energy of activation, Q, by the equation: AFA = Q - T aSx - RT [8] where aSa is the entropy of activation. Substituting eqs 8 and 7 into eq 6 gives: G = ek(kT/h) (aF/RT) exp [(AS,,)C/R] exp C-Qc/RTI C91 where the subscript G refers to boundary migration. The relationship between the driving free energy and the free energy of activation in boundary migration is indicated schematically in Fig. 2. Experience indicates that the variation of G with temperature can be described by: G= Go exp [- Qc/RT] [10] where Go and Qc are generally temperature independent over wide ranges of temperature. INTRODUCTION Idarado Mining Company, a subsidiary of Newrnont Mining Corporation, is situated high in the San Juan Mountains in southwestern Colorado. Portals, offices and surface plants are located near the towns of Ouray and Telluride at elevations ranging from 9,000 to 12,000 feet. The Ouray portion of the development was initiated in 1943. Upon completion in 1945 of a 250-ton mill, processing of development ores containing copper, lead and zinc was undertaken; thus, serving as a pilot testing unit for larger scale milling operations. These facilities were subsequently enlarged and utilized until 1956. Meanwhile, in 1953 Idarado had acquired The Telluride Mines Company, 62 miles distant by highway; however, only six miles via a network of tunnels which eventually linked the two workings. Extensive underground development and increased ore production necessitated reconstruction and expansion of the milling plant. The facility was designed to accomodate processing of 1700 tons of ore daily. This goal was achieved and it represents the current daily output. J., and whether there are. any traces of zinc in these Brazilian-deposits. J. T. ThE distribution of gold is obviously much wider than is Commanly supposed. Resides the usual matrices, vehicles, or associates, such as quartz, pyrite, chalcopyrite, etc., I find it occurring in quite a range of common rocks. For example, at the Rhodes mine, in Gaston County, a body of 9 to 12 feet of decoroposed, light-gray gneiss was worked together with the strings of quartz, and yielded from six to ten dollars to the ton. A mine in Moore County yields its gold mainly from a feldspathic schist. In the famous King's Mountain mine, in Gaston County, the gold is obtained not only from the seams of quartz in a blue, hydromicaceous schist, but a 60-foot ledge of grayish-blue, fine-grained, schistose limestone is quarried out bodily and sent to the stamps. It is gold-bearing throughout. In Montgomery County the singular concretionary, conglomeritic, quartzite schist, which contains Emmons's palceotrochis, is gold-bearing over wide tracts of country. This fact was noticed by Dr. Emmons. But a still more striking and significant fact is, that a large part of the gold of Montgomery, Davidson, and Randolph counties,

(written discussion*).-Captain Lucas has made an important contribution to our, knowledge of Belle Isle, especially as to the outline of the sulphur deposit, and the pronounced irregularity of the salt surface. I agree with his view, that the elevation or mound that constitutes Belle Isle may consist of several salt domes formed at different periods. It may be interesting to note the high gas pressure encountered in pockets in the salt by my No. 1 Belle-Isle well. While drilling a dry hole with cable tools, we sometimes struck. pockets of gas which would float the tools, so that drilling had to be suspended sometimes for several hours at a time, until the head of gas was exhausted, and this with a string of tools, 5-in. (127 mm.) stem 36 ft. (10.9 m.) long, that weighed complete about 3500 lb. (1587 kg.). At about 1800 ft. (548 m.), we struck the largest gas pocket and the string of tools was thrown up and nearly out of the hole. When it dropped back it made several loops

A series of investigations were made by the Mine Safety and Health Administration to evaluate the performance of various face ventilation systems as part of a program to reduce frictional ignitions of methane and to develop face ventilation systems that could be used with the line brattice more than 10 feet from the face. Tests were conducted in a full-scale laboratory model of a face area. Systems tested included unassisted blowing and exhaust line brattice, diffuser fan and spray fan systems. Systems were evaluated at air quantities ranging from 1.4 to 7.0 m3/s (3,000 to 15,000 cfm), and brattice-to-face distances from 1.5 to 9 meters (5 to 30 feet.). Tests were designed so that systems could be evaluated for the location of the high-point methane concentration in the face area, methane dilution capacity, and face ventilation index. The methane dilution capacity is the total amount of methane a system can dilute to 1.0 volume-percent. The face ventilation index is the efficiency at which the available face air volume is being used.

USINOR has conducted four blast furnace tests with formcoke made from marginal coals in the pilot plant of HBNPC ("H. B. N." process) in four different blast furnaces of various sizes and with medium and high grade burdens. The tests in which up to 30% of the blast furnace fuel burden was replaced by HBN formcoke yielded good results on furnaces ranging in hearth diameters from 5.6 to 9.5 m. The tests demonstrated that: - the slight increase of pressure drop in the stack did not prevent smooth operation at record production rates with the same blowers - the total coke rate was not significantly affected, but there was a slight increase of the calorific value of the top gas - the hot properties of the formcoke are satisfactory as seen from the samples withdrawn at the tuyeres and tapholes. At the end of the two months test on BE nº 2 of Dunkerque, the hearth was as permeable and clean as with good standard coke. Our conclusion is that HBNPC formcoke made from lean coals is an adequate substitute for conventional coke in the range of 20 to 40% replacement, which is of interest to USINOR.

A method to determine in situ stress directions and magnitudes from anelastic strain recovery measurements of oriented core has been used to determine the principal horizontal in situ stresses in the Rollins Sandstone in a deep well near Rifle, Colorado. The principal horizontal stress directions were determined directly from the principal horizontal strain recovery directions. The principal horizontal stress magnitudes were calculated from the principal strain recovery magnitudes, overburden stress, and Poison's ratio of the rock using a viscoelastic model. The accuracy of the in situ stress directions and magnitudes determined from anelastic strain recovery measurements was substantiated by a direct comparison with open-hole hydraulic fracture stress measurements. The anelastic strain recovery method predicted the magnitudes of the maximum and minimum horizontal principal stresses to be 54.5 MPa and 51.9 MPa, respectively; with an azimuth of N63ºW ± 8º for the maximum horizontal stress. The hydraulic fracture stress measurements yielded maximum and minimum horizontal principal stress magnitudes of 49.6 MPa and 46.8 MPa, respectively. The azimuth of the maximum horizontal stress ranged from N50ºW to N70°W.

ORDERING'S effect on the creep strength and other plastic properties of metals is unknown at the present time. Sachs and Weerts' attempted to compare the mechanical properties of the ordered and disordered state by comparing a quenched specimen with one annealed for a long time at a low temperature. This experiment is unsatisfactory because it introduces a possible effect from quenching. Barrett' used a hot impact test, but his method was not sufficiently sensitive to indicate any discontinuity in plastic behavior in the neighborhood of the critical temperature. On the theoretical side, Fisher9 as suggested that short range order would strengthen an alloy, but he gives no conclusions as to the effect of long range order. Cottrell" has discussed the interaction between long range order and dislocations, but does not indicate whether slip in a completely ordered alloy without domain boundaries is appreciably more difficult than slip in the disordered state. Because order exists in so many alloy systems, it is most important to prove experimentally whether long range order weakens or strengthens a metal. In plant tests with a 9.7 m hearth diameter high top pressure blast furnace the influence of disintegration of sinter during low-temperature reduction on blast furnace performance was evaluated. The blast furnace burden during the test period consisted of 74% self-fluxing sinter with a basicity of CaO/Si02 = 1.3, 15% pellets, 6% lump ore, and 5% recirculated slags. The sinter for the test was produced in a modern sinter plant. By changing the fuel rate and/or the MgO content at a constant basicity CaO/Si02 sinters with different low-temperature disintegration properties could be produced. The blast furnace was equipped with pressure monitoring devices at medium height of the furnace stack wall. This device provided in addition to the normal operating data readings of pressure losses in the upper and lower part of the furnace. The basic physico-chemical factors determining low-temperature disintegration are explained. The testing devices and the extent of quality control measures of sinter during the test period are outlined. Conclusions are drawn from the plant test in relation to sinter properties.

ON p. 499 of the December issue Of MINING AND METAL-LURGY plans were announced for a memorial to en-gineers who died in overseas service during the World War and a gift to the University of Louvain on behalf of the engineers of America. In this connection it is proposed to erect a memorial tablet giving the names. of engineers who died in the foreign service. Members of the A. I. M. HE high vapor pressures of metals such as lead, calcium, lithium, bismuth, and magnesium at steel-making temperatures present experimental problems which have thus far rendered it almost impossible to obtain really reliable data for their solubilities in liquid iron. Many investigators have attempted to equilibrate liquid iron in the same crucible with the undissolved liquid phase of such volatile metals. The published results,l-6 although useful, are often questionable on the grounds of not being obtained under true equilibrium conditions. Such information is not always of practical value in any case since the equilibrium vapor pressure is often several atmospheres and steel is not currently made at these pressures. Solubility measurements at lower partial pressures (< 1 atm) appeared to be more practical and easier to make. These data could be used to calculate solubilities at other pressures where Henry&apos;s Law is obeyed, and to estimate solubilities under other conditions of temperature and pressure with useful accuracy. This note outlines the development of a general technique for the measurement of solubilities in systems of this kind. The method involves equilibration of the high-boiling metal at known temperatures with the vapors of a low-boiling metal at known partial pressures. Analyses of quenched samples provide vapor pressure-solubility data and make calculations of alloy thermodynamics possible. The principle involved is similar to the closed-system diffusion-transport method which is difficult to apply with most high-melting liquid metals like iron, due to closure problems. A two-zone horizontal (molybdenum wire element) tube furnace, Fig. 1, provides two constant-temperature zones in a reaction tuve (3/4 in. ID by 1 in. OD by 36 in.). A high-boiling metal sample, 9, introduced in the higher-temperature zone, is maintained at temperature T1, and a volatile metal sample, 7, in the lower-temperature zone, is held at T2. A stream of argon with 10 pct hydrogen is passed via flowmeters, 1, and mixing-drying towers, 2 and 3. through the reaction tube at a favorable flowrate and acts as a carrier gas which entrains vapor from the volatile liquid metal at a specific constant partial pressure. The gas mixture passes through a system of constrictions, 6 and 8, to the higher-temperature zone, establishes intimate contact with the high-boiling liquid sample, 9, and exits through a small condenser tube. The entire system is at (nearly) atmospheric pressure and the volume of carrier gas passed is measured with a wet gas meter. When the high-boiling sample attains equilibrium with the vapor phase, both samples are removed and quenched. Analysis of the high-boiling sample for solute content reveals its solubility for the low-boiling metal at a vapor pressure calculated from carrier-gas volume and either a) weight loss of volatile metal or 6) weight gain of high-boiling sample plus condenser (which collects the undissolved vapors). To test the capabilities of the method, liquid silver at 1403&apos;C was equilibrated with lead vapor at various partial pressures. The relatively simple Pb-Ag system was particularly suitable for uncovering experimental problems and providing the first step toward investigations with more volatile metals and more difficult combinations.

IRON ore and bituminous coal are the two basic raw materials for the whole iron and steel industry. The ore furnishes the iron and is absolutely necessary-all iron and steel products come directly or in- directly from the iron ores. The bituminous coal furnishes the carbon needed for the smelting of the ores and for the fuel used in all the processes of iron and steel manufacture. The necessary carbon could be furnished in some other form besides bituminous coal. In fact, it is only since the Civil War that bituminous coal has been the chief source of the carbon for metallurgical fuel. For many years only charcoal made from the forests furnished the carbon for smelting iron ores. About 90 years ago, anthracite coal was first used as blast-furnace fuel and for many years continued to be the chief blast furnace and steel making source for carbon. Even in my own blast-furnace experience, I have used charcoal in Canada and anthracite in Pennsylvania for smelting ores in an iron blast furnace. Bituminous coal, now almost exclusively the source for the carbon used in smelting iron ores, also furnishes most of the heat used in the steel-making processes. It is seldom used in blast furnaces in its natural condition, hut is first coked in beehive, or in by-product coke ovens; such bituminous coal is called "coking coal." Bituminous coal that is suitable for making the producer gas used in the open-hearth steel process is called gas coal. Any bituminous coals suitable for making blast-furnace coke or foundry coke, or that can be satisfactorily used for making producer gas, are classed as metallurgical coals and as such are to be considered in my proposed plan for the evaluation of metallurgical coals. According to Bureau of Mines Bulletin No. 449 these coals comprised 22 per cent of the bituminous coals mined in this country in 1923.

Reynolds Jamaica Mines, Ltd., has received a $3+ million loan from ECA for the development of what are termed the largest bauxite deposits in the world in Jamaica, B.W.I. This amount is in addition to $11 million already provided. The new agreement calls for delivery of 750,000 tons a year beginning in early 1952. Inco has announced a new alloy containing 35 pet Ni which can be used for many purposes served by the old alloys which ran up to 70 pet Ni. The new alloy "Incoloy" is 35 pet Ni, 20 pet Cr, and the balance iron.

ESTIMATES of the stacking fault free energy of copper reported in the literature show an extensive divergence of results. Based on measurements of dislocation node radii, Thornton et al.7 find the lower limit of stacking fault energy to be 60 ergs per sq cm: Jossang and coworkers4 estimate the same value should be less than 40 ergs per sq cm. Assuming stacking fault free energy to be twice the coherent twin boundary free energy, Valenzuela8 reports 72 ergs per cm, while Inman and Khan2 cite a value of 24 ergs per sq cm. which can no doubt be accounted for by almost complete absence of interstitials in solution. However, the minute concentration was sufficient to permit observable recovery of dislocation damping. Assuming a dislocation density of 1010 CM -2 and an average loop length of 0.5 , a concentration of interstitials as low as 0.01 at. ppm is sufficient to reduce dislocation damping by more than a factor of ten. The concentration of interstitial solute atoms in Ferrovac E-0.15 pct Ti was thus estimated at 0.01 at. ppm < (C + N) < 2 at. ppm. The absence at elevated temperature of strengthening due to interstitials, Fig. 1, was therefore anticipated in the titanium alloy. The temperature dependence of the flow stress below 300°K was unaffected by addition of either titanium&apos; or zirconium.&apos; Observed, however, was an initial difference in the absolute value of the flow stress below 320oK, Fig. 1. Grain size may account for the difference; the grain diameter of Ferrovac E was 30 to 45 µ and that of Ferrovac E-0.15 pct Ti 65 to 90 µ. Although second phase particles in the form of titanium carbides and nitrides precipitated in the Ferrovac E-0.15 pct Ti alloy, the spacing was too large to produce any strengthening effect. The present method avoids both the question of interaction forces of nodal dislocations and the assumption that the coherent twin boundary free energy is one-half that of a stacking fault. Fig. 1 shows a transmission electron micrograph of a stacking fault intersecting a high angle grain boundary in copper: Fig. 2 is a schematic representation of the intersecting interfaces. To produce the specimen, pure copper was rolled to 0.002 in. thickness and annealed for several hours at 875°C. These foils were strained in tension to l04 µ in. per in., and rean-nealed to 8 min. Recrystallization and/or grain growth were not observed during the second anneal, indicating that intersections such as Fig. 1 are equilibrium configurations. Many such stacking faults were observed, but few were noted as intersecting grain boundaries in well-illuminated areas. The intersection of Fig. 1 was well away from the specimen edge. Since similar defects have not been observed in fully recrystal-lized and annealed copper, it is felt that this defect is due to the tensile straining. Electron transmission

The second underground coal gasification experiment conducted by ERDA&apos;s Laramie Energy Research Center at a site near Hanna, Wyo., was completed on Jul. 30, 1976. During the experiment production reached 0.32 blm3/d (12 M cu ft/d) of 6.9 w/m3 gas (175 Btu per cu ft). Approximately 6100 tonnes (6700 tons) of coal were gasified during the experiment. Energy return ratios of 4.5 to 5.3, coal gas thermal efficiencies of 76 to 89%, and overall process efficiencies of 65 to 74% were achieved during the second Hanna experiment. This paper describes the experiment and the results obtained with emphasis given to the determination of the energy recovered relative to energy consumed in conducting the test. Data from this determination are compared with previously published data from the first test conducted at Hanna during 1973-74.
