CONFUSION appears to exist in the discussions of fan testing because engineers do not agree on what energy should be credited to the fan in certain cases, and because certain terms that are used in the discussions seem to have double meanings. The purpose of this paper, therefore, is to discuss the useful energy that should be credited to the fan and the methods of determining this energy, and to suggest changes in nomenclature for the sake of clearness. The instruments commonly used in the measurement of fan pressures are the manometer, the static tube, and the impact tube. The static tube is a tube with small pinholes in it. When connected to one leg of the manometer and placed in the air current with the holes facing at right angles to the direction of the current, this tube causes the manometer to register the static pressure, unaffected by the impact of the air. The impact tube is a tube with an opening that faces the air current. When connected to one leg of the manometer, this tube causes the manometer to register a pressure which is the static pressure modified by the impact of the flowing' air on the end of the tube. If the static tube is connected to one leg of the manometer and the impact tube to the other leg, and both instruments are inserted close together in the air current, the static pressure is eliminated and the manometer registers the impact pressure. The efficiency of a fan is the percentage of the expended power utilized in useful work. The items to be included as useful work are a matter of convention, and as the conventions are not universal I feel that the matter is open to discussion.

GREAT advances in the preparation of ores for reduction to ferro-alloys have been made, although standard methods of reduction have been continued at most plants. Efficiencies, yields per furnace, and energy requirements per ton are generally better than previously attained. The advantages of sizing and conditioning of ore, fluxing stone, and coke have been realized. Conditioning varies from drying the furnace burden to chemical rearrangements to facilitate reduction reactions and sometimes to furnish some of the energy required for the reaction before the burden reaches the furnace. During the war period it is impossible to discuss in detail many of the advances made. They are subjects for postwar papers. However, the new procedures mentioned in the following paragraphs are indicative of the work already done and in progress.

BEFORE discussing this subject it is necessary to define somewhat the meaning of the tern metallurgical.. When I was a student at M. I. T. ore-dressing was not thought of as metallurgy in any sense of the word, but it was considered as more closely allied to mining, enabling the miner to market an otherwise unmarketable product, or at least to market it to better advantage. Progress in ore-dressing has gradually allied it more closely with smelting, for at present the raw material received by the smelter is predominantly concentrates and smelting practice has been profoundly affected by the products of the concentrating mill. It is not surprising therefore that in many schools ore-dressing is frankly considered as metallurgy and although there may be some dissenting opinions it will be considered as such in this discussion. Twenty-five years ago at M. I. T. metallography was taught in a few optional lectures. This subject has developed rapidly and been expanded into the new and increasingly important field of physical metallurgy. To many metallurgists the -term metallurgy means only physical metallurgy. In the pellet-producing industry it is sometimes claimed that "The pellets are made in the concentrator," or that "The key to good pellets is in the balling operation." However, one claim is generally agreed on: If you can put in, on, and through the indurating furnace a good green ball of Proper size and adequate strength to withstand the handling, load, dehydration, and thermal shock until it is properly heat-hardened, you will have the pellet product you desire-that is, a "competent" green ball. The strength requirements that enable a competent green ball to withstand the environment of the indurating furnace are usually less restrictive than those for transporting the green ball from its source of production to the furnace. Experience has shown that different types of material may have different balling characteristics which may impose limitations on the quality of the green ball that can easily be produced under normal conditions. Therefore, if a specific material will produce a green ball that meets the physical requirements for competency in the furnace, but not for handling or transportation, various practices must be instituted to overcome this deficiency. In other words, if a normal handling system is too rigorous for the green balls that can be produced under standard conditions, then "handling with care" should be tried.

DURING experimental study on the separation of a zinc concentrate from the heavy sulfide ores of Jerome, Ariz., a great deal of attention has been given to proper activation of the sphalerite content of the ore. The sphalerite at Jerome contains enough iron to class it as a marmatite, as picked specimens have only about 60 per cent. zinc, whereas pure zinc sulfide contains 67 per cent, zinc. This marmatite in large pieces is black in color, but in dry powdered state is brown. A flotation froth made from it has a silvery black luster in comparison with a brassy luster caused by chalcopyrite which occurs in the same ores. The sample used in most of the experiments described below consisted of about 3000 lb. of diamond-drill core from the zinc-bearing orebodies of the United Verde mine, and had the following analysis: PER CENT. PER TON Cu 0.695 A1203 0.83 Ag 1.30 Zn 6.17 S...:: 43.35 Au 0.02 Fe 36.23 CaO 0.46 Si02 9.27 Mineralogically, this analysis is calculated to the following, which is in agreement with the microscopic examination: PER CENT. Chalcopyrite 2.0 Schist 3.2 Marmatite 10.32 Quartz 8.2 Pyrite 73.0 Calcite 0.9 All samples were ground in a laboratory ball mill in order to leave about 3 per cent. on a 200-mesh sieve, fine grinding being essential to liberate the minerals in the ore. Most of the Jerome ores are so intimately crystallized that reasonably complete unlocking by grinding does not take place until 800 mesh is approached. Therefore, the 200-mesh grind adopted contains a considerable amount of locked mineral grains, but not so much as. to render impossible the preparation of commercial grades of concentrate:

WHEN the history of American business during these momentous war years is written, an absorbing chapter will be devoted to the Maclntyre Development, in northern New York. It will tell of a timely mining project, deep in the wilds of the Adirondacks, blasted into being by Axis torpedoes. It will recount the labors of 1500 engineers and workmen, miles from a highway, rail line, or power source, who built a huge enterprise in a few short months' time. And it will list these major contributions to the war effort: more than a quarter million tons per year of ilmenite, source of titanium dioxide-man's most opaque white pigment-to be used in paints for warships, tanks, guns, planes and the plants that build them; as a co-product, over 500,000 tons each year of magnetite-an important type of iron ore- to help feed the cavernous maw of America's wartime steel industry.

Silicosis is today's most important industrial disease and probably dates back to the Stone Age. Since the industrial revolution, increasing attention has been paid to those occupations where mineral dust is present in the air breathed by the workers. For many years it was assumed that the inhalation of all mineral dusts was hazardous. but investigations conducted in several countries pointed the statistical finger of guilt at free silica in any of its numerous physical forms as a dust of outstanding toxicity. Recognition of silica as the chief hazard has resulted in widespread use of the term "silicosis." Depending upon the concentration of finely divided silica dust to which the individual is exposed and the duration of exposure, silicosis may become a disabling condition in from one to thirty years. The structure of the lung and respiratory passages is such that only minute particles of silica can gain entry to the air cells in the lung (5 microns or under are most toxic). When these minute particles gain entry to the lung tissues they stimulate certain protective cells in the lung to multiply at an excessive rate. The cell's undergo inflammatory changes which result in nodular scars and a low-grade inflammation of the lung tissue. These progressive changes in the lung structure gradually encroach

To detenmine the origin of the sharp fatigue limit in many ferrous metals, S-N curvces were determined in push-pull fatigue at 18.6 kc per sec at room temperature and - 67°C for various kinds of iron. These differed in carbon and nitrogen content and grain size (25 and 2500 grains per sq mm). Sharp knees appeared in the S-N curves of fine-grained specimens with high interstitial content at both temperatures. In coarse-gruined specimens, knees were not sharp .regardless of the interstitial content and the testing temperature. It is concluded from these results that the controlling factov for the appeavance of the sharp fatigue limit is not strain aging but grain size. It has already been mentioned that iron and some iron alloys show fatigue curves characterized by a more or less sharp knee and a fatigue limit.' Explanations of the origin of this characteristic behavior of fatigue in iron appear to fall into two broad classes. One is concerned with interstitial impurities through the aging or locking effect and the other is based on intrinsic plastic properties of iron. Levy and sinclair2 and Lipsit and Horne3 have suggested that the fatigue limit observed generally in iron and steel is due to interstitial solute aging during the course of fatigue. On the other hand, Thompson and wadsworthl have suggested that the fatigue limit may be analogous to the sharp yield point, in the sense that alternating stresses above the fatigue limit are necessary to break down the dislocation locking. However, there are some experimental results which cast doubt on the general validity of these suppositions.4-8 Ferro and Montalenti' have recently suggested that the typical form of the fatigue curve of iron seems to come from an intrinsic plastic characteristic of the iron structure. This suggestion is based on the experimental result that pure iron containing an insufficient amount of interstitial solute to alldw appreciable strain-aging effects still showed a fatigue limit at room temperature. Although systematic investigations on the effect of grain size are scarce, it is thought that this effect is important in relation to the sharp fatigue limit. In fact, sensible differences were observed by Oates and Wilson4 in fatigue behaviors of a low-carbon steel depending on grain size. Ideally, the fatigue limit will be defined as the upper limit of stress amplitudes at which the life is infinite. This ideal fatigue limit can never be determined because of the limited time available for experiments, and moreover scattered data points often leave the construction of S-N curves somewhat arbitrary. And, it is usually stated that a material has a fatigue limit when its statistical S-N curve becomes apparently parallel to the N axis with a more or less sharp knee. The meaning of the fatigue limit and the sharp knee will be discussed in detail in relation to the construction of S-N curves. The origin of this sharp knee was investigated by determining S-N curves of iron for various interstitial contents, testing temperatures, and grain sizes. EXPERTMENTAL PROCEDURE The material as received was a commercial-grade low-carbon steel in the form of 4-mm-diameter rods with the following composition in weight percent: C, 0.09; Si, 0.017; Mn, 0.43; P, 0.006; S, 0.012; Cu, 0.11. Five different groups of specimens were tested. The grain sizes and interstitial contents in each group are given in Table I. The specimens of group C-02 were decarburized by annealing for 100 hr at 700°C, followed by an additional 100 hr at 850°C in wet hydrogen. Specimens of groups N-2 and N-9 nitrided in a mixed atmosphere of ammonia and hydrogen after an initial treatment identical to group C-02. The specimens of group C-9 were prepared in a manner similar to those of group C-02, except heat treatment was carried out in a vacuum. After polishing their surface with emery paper, the specimens of all groups were given a final anneal for 30 min at 930°C and air-cooled in an evacuated quartz tube. For group C*-9 this

POSSIBLY in no other of the non-ferrous mining districts of this country has the use and develop-ment of mechanical loaders been carried to such an extent as in the "lead belt" of Southeast Missouri. It has become apparent to the four mining companies in the district that it is imperative to apply satisfactory mechanical methods to the chief remaining stage of the entire operations-mining, milling, smelting and refining-in which manual labor is still largely used to handle material in process. With increasing wages and with the reduction of the metal divisor by the extension of mining into lower-grade orebodies, the shoveling cost per ton of lead produced has become relatively so large that in an effort to reduce it there is ample justification for considerable capital expenditure. Hand shovelers load about 18 tons of ore per shift and the average grade is less than five per cent. lead. Further, the ore is relatively heavy, about 21 cu. ft. to the ton when broken, and is often so coarse and so closely compacted after shooting that it requires much more block-holing, sledging, and muscular effort to shovel than, for example, does the cherty and more granular ore of the Joplin district or the finer ore in the headings of a drift mine. No mining company desires to pay for mere back muscles if it be economically feasible to avoid it, and labor saving machinery should be susceptible of operation by older employees, who are no longer capable of the more strenuous manual occupations.

EDUCATIONAL benefits for veterans of World War II have largely removed one of the two former barriers to a college education for everyone, namely financial means and intellectual capacity. This latter limita¬tion has not kept privately endowed institutions from increasing 50 to 100 percent in size of student body, even after applying moderately rigid entrance standards. Growth of some land-grant universities, which cannot well exercise such restrictive judgements, has been even greater. After a weary board of admissions, subject to student, alumni, faculty, and even political pressures, has admitted double the former number of freshmen, the university's worries really begin: to find laboratory, classroom, and instructional facilities. If this were a one- or two-year problem, the answer would be simple: double up, hold night classes, particularly of laboratories, rent space, and have instructors work 24 class or contact hours a week instead of twelve (it takes usually two to three hours of outside work by the instructor for one hour in class). However, most engineering school faculty men are worn out now from four to five years of "accelerated" (frequently downward!) programs and they couldn't continue teaching in a way satisfactory to their own consciences on

THE public generally has-become aware that there is something wrong with the coal industry and a clamor has arisen for an explanation if not a remedy for this disorder. It is only reasonable that this Institute be looked to for a diagnosis to show the way for some other .agency to prepare the patient for prescription or operation. The subject is extensive, widely diversified, and beyond the efforts of an individual to cover completely; one of the objects of this paper is the initiating of a symposium on the non- technical factors essential to an understanding of the bituminous coal industry. The present condition of the coal industry cannot be described in a few words but, in effect, it resolves itself into a simple statement: The average coal operator is losing money notwithstanding a firm conviction on the part of the consumer that he pays too much for his coal. Without enumerating the many and varied. factors which contribute to this condition, this paper will be devoted to the interrelation of taxation and ownership of coal and its effect on finance

PLANTS that normally burn coal now able too obtain a substantial increase over their normal supply for their greater power needs, and also additional tonnage for extra storage against the uncertainties of the future. Many plants previously burning oil or gas have already been converted to coal, and those which must yet change to coal will undoubtedly be able to obtain ample tonnage of coal of standard quality at reasonable prices. What a contrast this is to the conditions of 25 years ago, when the shortage of coal and transportation led to prices of $5 to $6 per ton at the mines, and degradation of quality, until the already overburdened railroads were called upon to haul 100,000 ton per day of extra ash alone. This was the result of a runaway market and the loading of gob, slate, and sub-quality coal amounting to an estimated increase in ash of 5 per cent of the total tonnage hauled. The problem of getting increased steam output from inferior coal caused unbelievable reductions in the low normal boiler efficiency of that time and untold labor in firing the hand- and stoker-fed furnaces of that day.

Many methods for the determination of gold or silver, or both, in cyanide solutions have been published, which with care in manipulation, and modification in some cases, will give results that are satisfactory. It is possible to classify or group these methods as follows: 1. Evaporating the solution in a porcelain or agate-ware dish containing litharge,l or in a "boat" made of lead foil. 2. Forming a lead sponge containing the precious metals by means of zinc shavings,2 zinc dust,3 or a piece of aluminum.4 3. Decomposing the cyanide solution with an acid and precipitating the precious metals by the use of one or a combination of some of the following: Copper sulphate,5 sodium sulphite,6 hydrogen sulphide,' cement copper.ll 4. DESPITE the zero weather of Monday, the morning meeting on nonferrous ore-reduction metallurgy got under way promptly under the efficient control of Arthur A. Center. The first and third portions of the paper on the Tri-State region were presented by B. M. O'Harra, with R. H. Lowe substituting for co-author Illidge on the second part. Attention was drawn to the compact design attainable when "Sink and Float" was employed as a means of primary concentration. The teaching profession should welcome this concise correlation of data from such a renowned center of lead and zinc production. H. R. Hanley and C. R. Hay¬ward were much interested in the mechanics of charging, manufacture, and life of the retorts.

Most brittle solids are relatively weak in tension and this weakness can be very significant in determining their performance in structures and excavations. Consequently, accurate knowledge of the tensile strength of brittle materials has long been recognized as important. In the past, measurements of the tensile strength of materials such as concrete, ceramics, and particularly rock have been hindered by problems encountered in fabricating test specimens and in accurately loading them. These difficulties have resulted in a scarcity of published tensile strength data. This can be readily seen in tabulations such as Wuerker's "Annotated Tables of Strength and Elastic Properties of Rocks.

INTRODUCTION The block-caving mining method is one of the most economical ways existing today to extract ore from nature. It is undoubtedly the least costly of the underground systems and moreover it compares favorably to open-pit mining. In addition to its low cost characteristic, the block-caving mining method permits a great extraction volume as can be exemplified by El Teniente's output capacity of over 22 million tons of ore per year. These characteristics of block-caving give assurance that, even though it is a very old mining system, it will be a good answer to the many future large massive low ore grade deposits to come and a1 so to rep1 ace open-pi t mining as such operations get deeper with higher stripping ratios. These are the reasons that induce further study of block-caving. In this paper block-caving at El Teniente is analyzed with due consideration to the major problems that this mine will encounter. Emphasis is given to the factors influencing the mining of soft ore which accounts for most of the ore to be extracted in the next ten years. A separate paper is devoted to a major modification introduced to block-caving hard primary ore at El Teniente by means of LHD equipment extraction. DESCRIPTION OF THE PRESENT MINING Ore Production and Flow Over 62.000 tons per day of ore are extracted 359 days per year at the El Teniente Mine. The Teniente 8 train haulage level at 1.983 m takes 29.000 tons daily to the Col6n Concentrator. Two trains make the 8 km haul with 16 cars per train. Car capacity is 90 tons. The Teniente 5 train haulage level 298 m above takes 33.000 t per day to the old Sewell Concentrator. Ore is produced from three production areas in two different levels. The so called North Mine produces 42.000 tons daily from the Teniente 4 level 65 m above the Teniente 5 haulage level. The Central Mine produces 1.000 tons from the first hard rock block caved at the Te- niente 4 level. The combined 43.000 tons per day production is sent through inclined 2 m dia- meter raises to the Teniente 5 haul age level , where 33.000 tons are taken 2.5 km to the Sewell Concentrator and 9.000 tons are hauled 0.5 km to a 5 m diameter vertical ore pass which sends ore to Teniente 8. The haulage is by 7 trains, 15 gabble-bottom cars per train. Car capacity is 20 tons. The so called South Mine produces 19.000 tons per day from the Teniente 1 level 645 m above the Teniente 8 haulage level. Ore is transferred by 2 m diameter inclined raises to the Ten 1 Retram level 22 m below, where 5 trains with 20 Sandfor Day cars per train, 8 tons capacity per car, haul the ore 1.5 km to two vertical 5 m diameter ore passes which connect to Ten 8. Starting in 1982 the Central Mine will in- crease production to 6.000 tons per day. An in- dependent loop haulage system will start operat- ing at the Teniente 5 level to feed a new under- ground 1.372 mm (54 in.) gyratory crusher which will send minus 152 mm ore (9 in.) to Teniente 8. In two or three years time the North Mine will only feed the 33.000 tons to the Sewel 1 Concentrator with its old Teniente 5 haulage system. The Col6n Concentrator will be fed from the Central and South Mines. Figure 1 shows the transfer systems and ore flows. The Ore Body In plan view at the Teniente 4 level the ore body has a kidney shape 1.800 m long and between 400 to 700 m wide. The north-eastern section of the ore body was washed away by the Teniente River. At the Sub 5 Level, 125 m below Teniente 4, the mineralization completely surrounds the circular 1.000 m diameter steep-sided barren breccia pipe (Braden pipe) . The ore body rock is 73% andesite, 14% diori te, 13% dacite and 6% mineralized breccia. LOCAL yearly taxes levied on bituminous coal lands in Pennsylvania have become a cost of first importance to the coal industry of the State. In Pennsylvania there is no State tax on real estate, but local taxation of real estate furnishes the greater part of the revenue necessary for the small governmental unit, as counties, townships, boroughs, and local school, road, and poor districts. Coal in place in the ground, whether or not title thereto has been severed from ownership of the surface, is assessed as real estate and on its supposed sale or market value. There are eight classes of counties in Pennsylvania, based on population; in populous counties of the first, second and third class, assessments are made by a county board appointed by the county commissioners and are fairly uniform throughout the county. In counties of the fourth to the eighth classes inclusive, property assessments are made by property assessors elected by and for each township within a county. In these counties the board of county commissioners acts as a board of equalization and review to hear appeals. In most counties, therefore, where there is a large unmined reserve of coal, assessments on that coal vary for each township, irrespective of the fact that the coal bed is continuous under many townships.
