At Bingham Canyon, the world's largest open-pit copper mine, annual grease consumption is in the neighborhood of 109 000 kg (240,000 lb), all of which was 544 (120-16) purchased, warehoused, and distributed in 54-kg (120-1b) and 180-kg (400-1b) drums. While perhaps a menial and mundane chore, grease distribution shows on the ledger as a significant expense item. To improve labor and cost performance, Kennecott maintenance engineers undertook a study to find the most direct method for moving multi purpose grease (MPG) from the refinery to the point of final consumption. What they found was a direct vendor system for hulk grease so simple and flexible that long-established drum distribution is being phased out in favor of the newer method throughout 75% of the operation.

Since 1935 California has enjoyed a remarkable cycle of discovery, which has placed the state in a very satisfactory position in regard to oil reserves. Most ol the geophysical plays have been drilled and it is possible that new discoveries must be made by the application of careful geologic and stratigraphic studies. During 1940 only one new field was discovered, which, although not of major importance, may lead to additional discoveries. During the year, 113 wildcats were drilled. New discoveries, extensions and a reappraisal of discoveries made in 1939 will not approximate over 50,000,000 bbl., as against an estimated withdrawal during the year of 224,000,000 barrels. Demand in terms of crude for 1940 was 632,000 bbl. per day as against 626,000 bbl. per day for 1939. Demand for gasoline was the same as in 1939, but the demand lor fuel oil increased 3.8 per cent. Compared with 1939, Japanese shipments decreased from 75,786 bbl, per day to 61,000 bbl. per day, but the balance of Pacific foreign shipments increased from 59,409 bbl. per day to 61,304. Total with-drawals from storage during the year will approximate 7,000,000 bbl., almost all of which is fuel oil. Drilling activity was slightly greater than in 1939 and accounted for 890 new producing wells as against 851 for 1939 (Table 3). Production averaged 611,900 bbl. per day as compared with 614.,842 bbl. per day for 1939. The productive acreage figure of the state was increased by 4000 through discoveries and extensions. New Discoveries Los Angeles Basin District Del Vdle Field.—Northwest of Newhall, where the first oil well in California was drilled, R. E. Havenstrite completed his Lincoln No. I well, flowing 390 bbl. of 50" gravity oil together with 7000 M CU. ft. of gas. Later the well was recompleted, after cutting off the gas, for 950 bbl. of 34" gravity oil. The type of structure from which this production is coming is a plunging anticline, complicated by faulting. The Lincoln No. I well uncovered approximately 180 ft. of net sand. This field contains a gas cap and its indicated productive area approximates 500 acres. An intensive wildcat drilling campaign is expected during this coming year in the district in the vicinity of the Del Valle field. Extensions and Deeper Sand Developments Los Ange1es Basin District Athens Field.—On the northwest plunge of the Athens structure, the Thorley Oil Co. completed its No. 12-1 well, flowing 250 bbl. of 3 2" gravity oil from a depth of 8097 ft. The area in which the well is located is complicated by faulting and it is impossible at this date to determine the importance of this deep-zone discovery.

AMERICAN participation in the World Engineering Congress in Japan will be generous. Nearly seventy papers have been prepared and for- warded for printing and the A. I. M. E. is well represented in the list. At our San Francisco meeting four of these will be briefly reviewed by the authors for the benefit of those who are unable to go on to Tokyo. They constitute a group dealing with the present economic status as seen by engineers of the world's iron, coal, petroleum and non-ferrous metals. Messrs. Leith, Smith and Tryon, Requa, and Probert have written papers that constitute a notable series. Messrs. Jeffries, Sweetser and Kinney, and other Institute members have written papers dealing more closely with technologic progress. The latest list of delegates and members is printed below, names of A. I. M. E. members being set in italics.

G. = 9'0 to 9'7 of crystals; of massive altered forms from 6'4 upwards. Luster submetallic, to greasy or pitch-like, and dull. Color grayish, greenish, brownish, velvet- black. Streak brownish black, grayish, olive-green, a little shining. Opaque. Comp. -A uranate of uranyl, lead, usually thorium (or zirconium), often the metals of the lanthanum and yttrium groups; also containing the gases nitrogen, helium and argon, in varying amounts up to 2'6 p. c. Calcium and water (essential?) are present in small quantities; iron also, but only as an impurity. The relation between the bases varies widely and no definite for- mula can be given. Radium was first discovered in this mineral and it has been shown that it and the helium present are products of the breaking down of the uranium.

NOTHING in this paper is to be understood as even suggesting a moment's suspension of the splendid work now going forward on the Isthmus of Panama, except so far as it is related to the proposed locks. All the work already done, and all material purchased or ordered, would be available for the plan herein proposed. The situation and the problem concerned may be summarized as. follows : The scheme of a lock-canal through the Isthmus of Panama was adopted, as is well known, on two principal grounds-namely, the greater expense of a sea-level canal, and the longer time required for its construction. Of these, the latter is believed to have been the more influential. But further developments have diminished the weight of both, so that a reconsideration of the question is warranted. It is the purpose of this paper to advocate such a reconsideration-emphasizing the importance of certain objections to the lock-canal not mentioned or not duly appreciated in the report of those members of the International Board of Consulting Engineers who favored this form; showing the nature and bearing of the new facts developed; and, finally, proposing a combination of well-known methods and apparatus, which would, in my judgment, effect the construction of a sea-level canal in less time, and perhaps at no greater cost, than will be required for the remaining work on the lock-canal. I. OBJECTIONS TO A LOCK-CANAL. 1. Earthquakes. Two centuries ago Panama is said to have been destroyed by an earthquake. In 1882 a rather violent earthquake was felt at the southern end of the Isthmus. In 1898 I felt a slight shock near the present border-line of Colombia. I. INTRODUCTION THE following article concerns the geological occurrence of the iron-ore deposits on the south coast of Cuba. The article is based on a detailed field study, made in the hope that some information would I gained which might be of value in the search for further orebodies, Or in the economic development of the ore already found. LOCATION The iron-ore deposits of the Firmeza district lie near the coast, in the southeastern part of Cuba, in the Province of Oriente. The orebodies of this district form part of a belt of deposits that extends from Sigua, 25 miles east of Santiago, to Sevilla, 5 miles east of Santiago, and lies on the seaward slope of the Sierra Maestra range of mountains.

NUMEROUS determinations1-7 of the tex-ture of cold-rolled polycrystalline iron, steel, and ferritic alloys have been made with good agreement among the various observers as to the principal features of the texture common to all, but there has been no adequate explanation of the texture in terms of the behavior of individual grains. This study presents an explanation of the texture based on the observed rotation of single crystals when deformed in a manner similar to a grain in the aggregate, a method we have found useful in leading to a better understanding of compression and tension textures;8,9,10 in particular, the aim has been to determine experimentally the end orientations of rolled single crystals of iron. These are discussed in connection with the point of view of Wever1 and of Boas and Schmid2 that the rolling texture is a simple compression texture (compression normal to the rolling plane) superimposed on a simple tension texture (tension in the roll-ing direction), and the point of view of Kurdjumow and Sachs3 that three ideal end orientations exist.

As an important mechanism for increasing production of the suction-draft-sinter process, it has been shown that gas permeability through the sinter layer plays an important role. Methods to increase production rates have been indicated and suggestions for carrying out the process have been made to improve the rate of production, reduce the fuel consumption, and at the same time obtain a uniform sinter. Laboratory experiments were conducted at the Institute for Ferrous Metallurgy of the Technical University at Aachen to illustrate these methods. Methods of Increasing Gas Penetration Through Sinter Layers The following are of fundamental importance in determining the process cycle during the sintering of iron ores: 1) Generation of maximum temperature, since its form and range determine sinter quality. 2) Propagation velocity of the temperature maximum which controls the attainable output. 3) The convective heat transfer which influences the velocity of travel of the temperature maximum.

Greater progress than in any previous year was accomplished by the oil industry in New Mexico in 1936. The total number of completions in the state was 631, of which 549 were oil wells, 21 were hydrocarbon gas wells, three were carbon dioxide gas wells, and 58 were dry holes. The total oil production for the year was 26,804,446 bbl. Compared with the production for 1935 of 20,228,947 bbl., this represented a gain of 32.5 per cent. Of the total production, 25,337,382 bbl. came from Lea County. The average daily nonmarginal well allowable for that county was 115 bbl. the first of the year and 86 bbl. at the close. Coprecipitation of anionic and cationic polyelectrolytes has been applied to floccula-tion of several mineral systems. Results obtained in a study of the flocculation of kaolinite and hematite suspensions of polycationic and polyanionic electrolytes are presented. Greatly increased settling rates were observed following precipitation of positive and negative polyelectrolytes on the surface of finely divided minerals in aqueous suspension. The ratios of polycationic to polyanionic electrolytes required to produce maximum sedimentation have been shown to correspond closely with the equivalence points obtained by light scattering studies of systems containing the positive and negative polyelectrolytes by themselves. DISPERSION of colloids has been of interest to surface chemists for many years. Flocculation studies have been employed to evaluate the limits of colloid stability. In water suspensions, colloids become unstable and flocculate when the 5 potential, the potential of the kinetic solvation sheath, falls to a value at which van der Waals forces may act to draw the particles together. This may happen through an adjustment of the pH of the suspension or by addition of a salt. Optimum conditions for rapid formation of large flocs are found in the region of minimum < potential. In addition to these well known considerations, colloids in water suspensions are known to be flocculated by certain large organic macromolecules. These polyelectrolytes in some cases minimize the 5 potential and in other instances increase the attractive forces by supplying sites for hydrogen bonding.&apos; Use of organic polyelectrolytes in flocculation of mineral colloids has increased rapidly in recent years. These materials are now recognized as indispensable aids to fluid-solid separations in many extractive metallurgical operations. They have been found to increase both the settling rate in thickeners and the filtration rate of filters. In the elucidation of the characteristics of these organic reagents as floc-culants in this laboratory, it was discovered that interaction of certain polyelectrolytes had a surprisingly good effect on flocculation of mineral colloids. Experimental Procedure: The anionic flocculants used in this study were Lytron 886 and 887, produced by Monsanto Chemical Co. Both reagents are copolymers of vinyl acetate and maleic anhydride. Lime is added to Lytron 886, whereas Lytron 887 is all organic. These reagents possess two carboxyl groups for each acetate group and are therefore anionic in character. The cationic reagents used were the Peter Cooper Co. 1-X and 2-X glues. The structures are not definitely known, but the re- agents are amines and are cationic in character. The glues were prepared in the chrome-alum form. Both types of reagents may be classified as polyelectrolytes in that they are high molecular weight polymers and ionize in water. All data presented are in terms of sedimentation rate, measured in 250-ml glass-stoppered graduated cylinders. With suitable precautions such measurements are fairly reproducible and provide a sensitive means for selecting important parameters such as PH, reagent concentration, and floc size and density. Agitation was standardized with five complete end over end cycles of the suspensions in the stoppered graduated cylinders.

The recurring problem of joint failures in ofjshore structures, coupled with the catastrophic collapse of many of these structures during Hurricane Hilda (1964), hay forced reconsideration of techniques presently used to design sfuctural joints. This paper presents results of studies conducted for this reconsiderat?on. Only right-angled T-joint,s and cross-joints where a brace was welded directly to the undisturbed surface of another tube (the chord) were considered. Tests were performed on seven T-joint and 12 oross-joint specimens of two types which were designed to give a broad but practicd range to the geometrical parameters believed to be of significance to the problem. These paramefers were expressed in dimensionless form. Each specimen of the T-joints was instrumented wirh both electrical resistance strain gauges and deflection dials. After the elastic tests were concluded, each specimen was loaded to failure by applying an axial tensile load to the brace. The cross-joints were tested to failure without measuring elastic strains. Theoretical solutions for the stresses in a cylindrical shell due to a distributed radial load over portions of its surface were numerically evaluated. The experimental results are compared with calculated values obtained using Bijlaard&apos;s and Dundrova&apos;s theoretical analyses. INTRODUCTION During the last IS years a large number of structures were built for the offshore exploration of oil both in the Gulf of Mexico and dong the Pacific Coast.&apos; In all these offshore platforms, the tubular shape was extensively used since this shape provides outstanding strength in proportion to its weight, compared to other shapes, when all directions (x, y, z) are considered. Past use of tubes was hampered because of connection details. But with the advent of welding, it became no more difficult to connect tubular shapes than to connect rolled shapes. However, some problems have been encountered in actual construction in making welded joints that are adequate and yet economical. In trying to connect tubular members, designers have used a varied number of methods; consequently, some of the joints seem to be very expensive in detail while others appear weak and underdesigned. An inspection of offshore platforms owned by different companies indicates the use of a large number of joint arrangements and configurations. Such a variety of joint types in current service indicates the wide divergence of opinion that exists on how such joints should be designed, stiffened and strengthened. Fig. 1 shows the various types of connections that have been used in practice. This paper reviews the present state of art on tubular joints of the T and cross type, and presents results of experimental and analytical work being conducted at The U. of Texas and elsewhere. It is believed that such information will be of great help to designers for the formulation of proper design procedures for joints. CONNECTION PROBLEM Recently, cracks have been observed in several welded connections in offshore structures. Fortunately, until about 1 1/2 years ago, these failures have been localized and have not resulted in the collapse of structures or loss of life. For example, one platform installed in Louisiana during 1955 in about 60 ft of water had been subjected to four tropical hurricanes. This platform successfully withstood these forces and was later removed because operations at this location had been completed. Many joint failures were observed during the removal.

Threshold displacement pressures are needed to determine how much overpressure can be used in storing natural gas. An experimental technique for determining threshold pressures by displacing water with gas from samples saturated with water is presented. Threshold pressures for eight low permeability samples were measured. Threshold pressure data obtained in this work, plus data on higher permeability samples reported in the literature, are correlated with porosity, permeability, surface tension and formation resistivity factor. Mercury injection pressures also were measured and correlated with air-water threshold pressures. Threshold pressures were found to be independent of time. An aerial photograph of gas emerging from the top of a core shortly alter its threshold pressure has been exceeded shows that the gas bubbles are uniformly distributed across the face of the core. Channeling will occur, however, when an increased gas phase permeability is reached, A porous medium can be re resealed alter its threshold pressure has been reached, provided it has not been desaturated below a fixed saturation. Its new threshold pressure will be lower than when the sample is 100 percent saturated with water. INTRODUCTION The degree of overpressure in excess of the discovery pressure that a gas storage reservoir can withstand is determined by the ability of its caprock to contain gas, providing the pressure does not exceed the structural limit of the reservoir. The retention of gas in a reservoir by a caprock saturated with water is a result of the capillary forces acting at the gas water interface. Without the presence of water in a caprock, gas would leak out of the reservoir at a rate determined by the permeability of the caprock to gas. The ability of a caprock to contain gas is expressed in terms of its threshold displacement pressure, which is defined as the minimum pressure needed to initiate the displacement of a wetting phase by a nonwetting phase from a porous medium 100 percent saturated with the wetting phase. The gas industry must be able to predict how much "overpressure" a gas reservoir can withstand before leakage occurs by gas displacing water from caprock overlying the reservoir. This is of economic importance since the storage capacity of a gas reservoir is proportional to its pressure. The discovery pressure for most reservoirs is found between the upper and lower limits1 shown in Fig. 1. Discovery pressures in excess of their hydraulic pressure gradient are attributed to the compaction of an isolated shale formation by the overburden.2.3 The lower limit of 0.433 psi/ft corresponds to the weight of the overburden, the gradient of the rock itself. R. G. K. Morrison (Chairman, Dept. of Mining Engineering and Applied Geophysics, McGill University, Montreal, Que., Canada) - The discing of drill core has been a recognized pressure phenomenon for many years but only recently has an interest been taken in the mechanism involved. The work of Jaeger and Cook is referred to in the text. The authors have now advanced the study to establish, within certain loading limitations, a direct relationship between axial and radial stress at failure. This is an important contribution. In mines generally, where pressure conditions result in the spalling of openings, the faces of drifts and crosscuts, on scaling, usually show a concavity with respect to the opening very similar to the face of the drill hole after the separation of the stub. The same holds for shaft sinks. This suggests a similarity between the mechanism of the discing of core and that of the spalling of an opening, under pressure, to develop a more stable outline. The latter, commonly regarded as shear, is the most conspicuous type of failure observed in

DURING September, the Coal Commission pre- pared for issue a series of 18 reports on varied aspects of- the bituminous coal industry; the final report, dated Sept. 22, sums up the facts and offers recommendations addressed to Congress, to the industry, and to the public. The few following paragraphs are selected: Bituminous coal is the real foundation of that great industrial and transportation structure which enables more than a hundred million people to live in America and be so well supplied with things necessary for their health, comfort; and convenience; it also furnishes domestic fuel for two-thirds of the homes of the land. The distribution of the output of the bituminous mines tells the story: 28 per cent. goes to the railroads, 25 per cent. to the boiler houses of factories and mills of all kinds, 15 per cent. to the coke ovens and gas plants, 10 per cent, to the homes, 7 per cent. to steel plants and the same percentage to power plants and street railways, 4 per cent. is exported, 2 per cent is used for power at the coal mines, and the remaining 2 per cent. goes to the seaboard for steamship fuel. Bituminous coal enters into interstate commerce on a scale approached by no other commodity; less than a fourth of the coal mined in the United States fails to enter interstate com-merce. All but one of the 45 coal producing districts in the United States ship coal outside the State in which it is mined. Three hundred miles of cars loaded with coal is the daily output of the bituminous mines of the United States. The public-welfare element in coal is seen in the dependence of public health and safety on an unfailing supply of fuel, in the close connection between the prosperity of most industries and the uninterrupted operation of the coal mines, and in the obvious fact that without coal the great network of railroads which binds together this great country would be idle. The railroads and the public utilities, themselves so clearly obligated to render what-ever public service is demanded of them that the constitutionality of their public regulation is unquestioned, are of all industries most dependent upon coal. Thus, coal makes up over 35 per cent. of the operating cost at the gas plant and over 25 per cent. at the electric power station, and in the operating expenses of. a railroad the cost of coal is the largest single item, next to labor. The practical logic that half a century ago clothed with a public interest the steam locomotive and in later years the electric-power station must recognize a large element of public service in the coal mine that furnishes the necessary energy to both locomotive and power-plant.

Adsorbed films were formed on polished stainless steel specimens from dilute benzene solutions of two crude oil distillation residua. Although the two residua were extremely dissimilar in composition, contact angle measurements showed that the two films increased the wettability of the steel specimens to oil by equal amounts. Furthermore, the wettability of the films was essentially unaffected by the desorption techniques used. Paraffin deposits were formed from heptane-wax solutions on the same stainless steel specimens. These deposits definitely adhered to the surface. Presence of an adsorbed crude oil film on the metal surface increased its free surface energy and resulted in increased deposition of paraffin. The addition to the heptane - wax solution of small amounts of the same distillation residua that were used to form the adsorbed films resulted in decreased cohesive strength in the deposits formed, which resulted in decreased deposition. The presence of a crude oil fraction both in the solution and as a preadsorbed film eliminated the adherence of a deposit of any kind. A mechanism of deposition is proposed which explains the results obtained. INTRODUCTION The natural formation of any predominantly organic accumulation in oilwell tubing, surface flow lines or other production and storage facilities is called a paraffin deposit. These deposits restrict the production of crude oil, causing a substantial increase in production costs because of decreased flow capacity, expense for periodic deposit removal and unproductive downtime. The conditions under which such deposits form, their physical characteristics and the nature and severity of the problem created are extremely varied. Over the past several years, much progress has been made in developing and utilizing methods to remove accumulated paraffin deposition. However, like so many other problems, the basic stumbling block appears to be a lack of understanding of the fundamental mechanism involved in the formation of such deposits. Crude petroleum is known to contain considerable quantities of polar, surface active substances which Doddl has shown to be present at the oil-water interface. Denekas, Mattax and Davis2 observed that the wettability of reservoir rocks was drastically altered by exposure to crude oil fractions; and Zisman, et a1.3 showed that the nature of the compounds adsorbed on a surface would determine its wettability characteristics. Cole and Jessen4 and Ehrig5showed that surface wettability can have a profound effect on the magnitude of paraffin deposition, and Parks6 demonstrated chat the presence of certain adsorbed films on a metal surface would reduce the adherence of paraffin to that surface. Zisman7 has since advanced the theory that the conditions for adhesion are the same as for wetting. Therefore, it was felt that there was adequate evidence to support the supposition that adsorption of compounds from a crude oil might play an important part in paraffin deposition. ADSORPTION-WETTABILITY EXPERIMENTS Initial experiments were conducted to determine the effects of adsorption from solution of crude oil residua on the wettability of a polished stainless steel surface. Distillation residua with initial atmospheric boiling points of 700F were used in preference to the whole crudes in order to concentrate on the molecular weight range of interest, and to eliminate the possibility of composition change due to evaporation of the light ends. Also, these high boiling materials would be expected to be adsorbed from the whole oil in preference to similar compounds of lower molecular weight.

The Anaconda Company, through its wholly owned subsidiary The Anaconda Company (Canada) I,td., has investigated, optioned and partially developed a large tonnage of iron ore amenable to magnetic concentration. The reserves are located in north central Ontario and occur within a twenty-two mile belt of layered and intricately folded metamorphic rocks, close to the north contact of an igneous complex of granite and pegmatite. There are two main ore deposits. Briarcliffe is a steep to vertically dipping body 100 to 500 feet wide and over a mile long. The Two Mile Lake deposit is flat dipping and confined to an open, asymmetrical syncline; it is approximately a mile wide and 250 to 4.00 feet thick. On its flat easterly plunge, it is saucer-like in shape and is amenable to open-pitting for an east-west distance of several thousand feet. Magnetometer surveys, confirmed by drilling, indicate at least a three mile eastward extension of this deposit. Location and Access: The property is located in the Kowkash Mining District of northwestern Ontario, roughly forty-four miles north of the community of Nakina on the main line of the Canadian National Railroad. (Fig. 1) Access during the exploration period was entirely by airplane from Nakina. (Fig. 2) More recently, Nakina itself was connected to the highway network in the Longlac-Geraldton area. The property is roughly 190 miles by existing and proposed railroad from the Great Lakes waterway system. The Trans-Canada pipeline moving natural gas from western to eastern Canada passes through Geraldton roughly 70 miles south of the property. Topography: The surface features in the area are typical of a sizeable portion of the Precambrian Canadian Shield area. Many lakes, low swampy areas, and glacial moraine-type features are common in this recently glaciated area. The average elevation is between 800 and 900 feet above sea level, and the relief is probably less than 100 feet with the greater portion of the area less than 50 feet. The topographic "highs" are formed either by outcrops that were resistant to glacial erosion or by moraines, eskers and drumlins which were deposited upon the recession of the glaciers. The better mineralized zones, composed chiefly of quartz and magnetite, commonly form ridges resistant to erosion and weathering. Previous Work: Because of the obvious outcrop of the magnetite-rich beds and knowledge gained from early developments within the general region, it is conceivable that the presence of the iron formations has been known for a good many years.
