It is with great pleasure that I read Mr. Howard M. Wells article in the December 1978 issue of MINING ENGINEERING entitled: "Optimization of Mining Engineering Design in Mineral Valuation." Mr. Wells very adequately presents the case and point that there are a great number of variables which must be analyzed during an economic evaluation of an FUND RESOURCE, such as copper or uranium.

A STUDY of copper and silver base alloys was made with the object of finding, if possible, useful alloys subject to dispersion hardening. These studies led to the discovery of several alloys showing considerable dispersion hardening, the most important of which, the alloys of copper with iron, nickel, cobalt and chromium silicides, have since been very ably reported by M. G. Corson.1 This paper is offered as a few notes covering alloys other than those described by Corson and some further data on the silicide alloys.

THE wire-rope hoisting conditions at the mines of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. in Butte, Mont., are very severe because of the conditions under which it is necessary to operate. A study was made, in the fall of 1919, for the purpose of changing these conditions in order to obtain longer rope and sheave life. There are at present in Butte, hoisting engines equipped with wire rope as follows: 9 main hoists using flat ropes. 7 main hoists using 1 ½ in. rope. 5 main hoists using 1 ¼ in. rope. 6 shafts using 1 1/8 in. rope. 2 chippy hoists using 1 ¼ in. rope. 9 chippy hoists using 1 1/8 in. rope. 15 shafts using 1 in. rope. 7 shafts using 7/8 in. rope. 1 shaft using ¾ in. rope. In addition, there are a number of sinking engines using 5/8 in., ¾ in., 7/8 in., and 1 in. (15.9, 19, 22, and 25 mm. rope.) The flat ropes run from ½ by 7 ½ in. (12.7 by 190.5 mm.) to ½ by 4 ½ in. (9.5 by 114 mm.) and are used on the older hoisting-engines, which are set comparatively close to the shaft. Because of swelling and moving ground at some of the shafts, these ropes present certain difficulties in operation that are more pronounced than with round ropes; they are, therefore, being superseded by round ropes as newer engines are being installed. They are, however, much more easily inspected and repaired than round ropes.

ORE at the Jeffrey mine of Canadian John Mansville at Asbestos, Que., is hoisted by two 12 1/2 - ton capacity aluminum skips, counterbalanced. When the loaded skip reaches the surface it empties, via its sliding door, into a bin. Simultaneously, the skip tender, who operates at the 940 level, loads ore into the alternate skip from a 12 ½ -ton measuring pocket. This done, he sets the skips in motion. Problem: When moisture content of the asbestos ore is high, the ore, unknown to the skip tender, some- times sticks in the dumping skip, preventing complete discharge. Moreover, the sliding skip doors sometimes jam and stay open after the ore is discharged. If a skip in this condition is lowered, the result is either an overflow of ore, or the ore discharges through the open skip door, down the shaft. Spilled ore must then be mucked out of the spill pocket and hoisted in 2-ton cars. Cost is high, time is lost, and the shaft is sometimes damaged. Solution: A television apparatus was installed so that the skip tender might quickly spot improper door operation or hang-ups at the dumping station.

Discussion of the paper of BENJAMIN F. TILLSON, presented at the NEW York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 9S, February, 1915, pp. 505 to 528. T. E. STURTEVANT, * New York, N. Y.-Mr. Tillson's paper on hammer drills is of much interest to me. Early in 1909 I was invited to make tests of our drills at the Franklin mine of the New Jersey Zinc Co. The first drill that we tested gave very poor results. This was a drill having a hammer piston 1¾ in. in diameter and 3 ¼ -in. stroke, the hammer piston weighing about 6 1b., the 1 ¾ in. diameter being exposed to pressure at either end. Although this drill has given excellent results as a sinking drill, its performance as a stoping drill was poor. This was one of the surprises of the limestone as spoken of by Mr. Tillson. This led me to further investigation, and a second drill was developed, with a much lighter piston and a somewhat longer stroke, that gave better results. In the design of this drill, no attention was paid to the cost of construction, our whole attention being given to the increase in drilling speed and reduction of the quantity of air used. The first drill of this type had a piston weighing about 2 ½ lb. and a stroke of 3 ¼ in. The piston was made with a hammer-bar extension, and the cylinder was made with two diameters of the bore, one in which the hammer-bar extension moved and the larger one in which the piston head moved. The Gulf Coast area of Texas and Louisiana produced a total of 47,070,650 bbl. of oil during 1928, a decrease of 7,401,173 bbl. from the previous year. Of this amount Texas produced 39,353,950 bbl., or a decrease of 9,689,296 bbl. from the 1927 output. The Louisiana Gulf Coast produced 7,716,700 bbl., which is an increase of 2,288,123 bbl. over 1927. The decrease in the Texas Coastal area is due principally to the decline at Spindletop. Production at the beginning of the year in this field averaged 53,400 bbl. daily. At the end it had declined to 35,850 bbl. The increase in Louisiana was due to development in new fields at Kelso Bayou (East Hackberry), Sulphur, Sweet Lake, Bayou Boullion and Sorrento. This production was maintained by the drilling of 984 wells. Of this number 736 were located in Texas and 248 in Louisiana. Of the 984 wells drilled, 571 were reported as producers. Distribution of the various completions is listed in the accompanying tables compiled by Oil Weekly. New Developments New developments of particular importance in Texas were the finding of a 5000-bbl. well in formations of Cook Mountain age in the Clay Creek field located in northern Washington County by the Sun Oil Co. ; the discovery of oil at Dewalt in Fort Bend County by the Humble Oil & Refining Co.; the development of commercial production at Raccoon Bend in Austin County by the same company; and the finding of oil in formations of Oligocene age in the Refugio gas field of Refugio County. The most important development in Louisiana was the finding of oil at Sorrento, east of the Mississippi River, by the Gulf Production Co. The importance connected with these finds is not so great in that they opened up new fields, but in the new territories which they open as possibly productive of oil. Eastern Louisiana has been looked upon with considerable doubt on account of the theory which has prevailed among most geologists that the nature of the formations was not such as to produce oil. The only essential difference among the three methods of collecting the precious metals from their low-grade ores by fusion is comprised in the nature of the vehicle in which those metals are concentrated. If lead- or coppper-ores are used, the processes are respectively lead- or copper-smelting; but when the sulphide of iron forms the matrix in which the gold and silver are collected, the process is known as pyritic smelting. The latter method presents rarely any advantages when lead- or copper-ores are available at rates which permit profitable treatment. Pyritic silver-smelting, defined by Percy as " the smelting of silver-ores, which are either free from lead or do not contain it in sufficient quantity to collect the silver, in conjunction with pyrites, in order to produce a regulus in which the silver may be concentrated," is not, as the name would imply, confined to ores of this metal alone, but embraces auriferous silver-ores, or even gold-ores simple. This method of collecting the precious metals from lowgrade dry ores, employed at Freiberg by Barthel Kohler in 1585, does not appear, up to the present, to have been introduced into this country on a working scale. And yet the possibility of getting rid in a single operation of all the earthy or siliceous gangue of a lowgrade ore and concentrating the precious metals in a matte without loss of lead (which includes gold and silver) by slagging, or volatilization, at the same time producing a highly siliceous slag, very nearly if not quite as clean as is usual in lead-smelting, certainly commends itself. .ABOut 1.5 varieties, or tnodifications, of the best rnagnesiurn available were prepared and subjected to etching tests, then examined for micro-structure. Of the 30-udd etching reagents that were tried, nearly half, mostly ammonium salts, etched the metal satisfactorily. The surfacing and etching of magnesium is shown to be a very simple and quick operation. The density and hardness of magnesium were determined. The most interesting new observations relate to the finding of the hexagonal etch figures, the crystal laminations, and the fact that the metal is plastic, cold, when restrained or quickly deformed. Under slowly applied pressule cold metal deforms slightly, then shears to fracture without plastic flow. The chief structural features of magnesium arc presented in two reduced photographs and 30 photomicrographs. Materials Tested There are only two sources in the United States from which new metal can be procured: the American Magnesium Corpn. and the Dow Chemical Co. No pronounced structural or property differences in the metals from these two companies were disclosed by the work of this investigation. The following materials were obtained from the manufacturers: 1. Massive crystals of distilled metal (American Magnesium Corpn.). 2. Rods of hot-extruded metal, ½-in. squares and 5/8-in. rounds (American Magnesium Corpn.). 3. Sheet magnesium, 0.005-in. thick (American Magnesium Corpn.). 4. Cast stick metal, 13/8-in. dia. (Dow Chemical Co.). 5. Magnesium-aluminum alloy, hot-rolled plate, ½-in. thick (American Magnesium Corpn.). From these materials, were prepared: 6. Sections from a furnace-cooled ingot made from clistilled crystal. 7. Cold-strained pieces from (6), (4) and (2). 8. Pieces cold-squeezed to fracture from (6), (4) and (2). 9. Hammer-struck pieces from (6), (4) and (2). 10. Steam-hammer struck pieces from (6), (4) and (2). 11. Sections from furnace-cooled ingot of the magnesium-aluminum alloy.

Effects of heavy metal ions on the growth and the activities of iron and sulfur oxidation of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans were investigated. Mercuric, silver, and stannous ions inhibited both of the growth and the iron- oxidizing enzyme system of the bacterium. On the other hand, uranyl ion inhibited the growth, but it gave almost no effect on the iron-oxidizing enzyme system. The inhibitory effect of uranyl sulfate on the growth of the bacterium is intensified on lowering the cultivating ' temperature from 28 ºC to 7 ºC. In the concentration of 10-3M, cadmium and copper ions inhibited colloidal sulfur-oxidizing activity of the cells 69 and 52 %, respectively, though they did not inhibit the iron-oxidizing activity at all in the concentration. On the contrary, stannous chloride did not givr any effect on the sulfur-oxidizing activity of the cells, though it inhibited the iron-oxidizing activity 55 % in the concentration of 10-3M. Several differences were observed among the cytochrome systems of cell-free extracts of the cells grown on iron and on sulfur.

The outstanding features of 1926 in the petroleum industry included the following: 1. Stocks of all oils (crude and refined) were reduced, making the first annual decline since 1918. 2. Domestic crude oil production increased steadily during the last 11 months of the year, accelerating during the fourth quarter, and ending the year at the highest level ever attained. 3. Three new major oil fields were developed—Panhandle, Spindle-top and Seminole. 4. Important advances were registered in production technique, tending to retard the declines of old wells and to maintain the flush periods of new wells. 5. The problem of gaining greater economic control of production through unit operations and gas conservation received growing recognition by the industry and the Federal Oil Conservation Board. 6. The rate of drilling was sharply increased during the second quarter of the year and suffered only a very slight retardation during the closing months. 7. The runs of crude oil to stills were maintained above normal throughout the year and underwent acceleration during the fourth quarter. 8. The gasoline situation was marked by a continuous and substantial increase in the rate of production of cracked gasoline, and by an improvement in the statistical position of the commodity. 9. Prices of both crude petroleum and its principal derivatives were characterized by more profitable levels and greater stability than for a number of years past; and, while showing declines during the fourth quarter, prices did not recede sufficiently to slow down materially either drilling or refinery operations.
