IT is well known that particles of different sizes are not distributed evenly throughout the average charge in an iron blast furnace. Just how great the disparity in particle size in different parts of a single plane in a furnace may be is indicated by the results of some recent investigations1 conducted by the Bureau of Mines on a furnace operating on Lake ores. The wide variations found in gas velocity, gas composition, and temperature from the periphery to the center of the upper charge column were caused by the great variation in particle size of the raw materials used and were also greatly influenced by the methods of charging. This paper summarizes the results of an investigation of the influence of different methods of charging and of the treatment of raw materials upon the size distribution of the solid particles in the blast furnace. A more complete report will appear later as a Bureau of Mines technical paper.

Electrical-resistivity )measurments were made be-trueetz room temperatrive and 1.5 oK on five different stocks of cerium metal, and the results were correlated with the types, amounts, and distribution of the impurities present. Magnesium, which appeared to be distributed as a solute throughout the cerium matrix, was found to have a large effect on the residual resistivity, 1 at. pct Mg being sufficient to increase the residual resistivity by about 10 microhm-cm. The formation of ß by repeated thermal cycling between room temperature and liquid-helium temperature is attributed to the deformation and faulting that occurs during the ? D a transformation. In preparation for starting a proposed study of cerium-rich alloys, we examined samples from severa1 stocks of cerium metal in order to choose the purest stock for future use in making the alloys. Low-temperature electrical-resistivity data were used to gain initial information about the purities of the stocks. Additional information was subsequently obtained from chemical analyses, density measurements, optical metallography, and electron-micro-probe analyses. Cerium that has been annealed at high temperature and cooled to room temperature has the fee crystal structure (? phase) with a = 5.16Å. When cooled further, in the region between about 250" and 150°K, some of the fee phase transforms to the double hcp form (ß phase) with a = 3.68 and c = 11.92Å. The remainder of the room-temperature fee form (and perhaps some of the hexagonal phase) transforms electronically in the vicinity of 100° K to the more dense or "collapsed" fee form (a phase), a - 4.85A, by transferring about 0.5 electron per atom from the 4f level to the valence band. Very little work related specifically to the effects of impurities on the physical properties of cerium has been reported in the literature. Gaume-Mahn1, 2 has studied the effects of calcium, magnesium. iron, silicon, and tantalum on the electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility of cerium between 60o and 300°K. Gschneidner, Elliott, and McDonald3 have discussed the effects of total impurity content on the hysteresis of the a —? (reversible) transformation and on the formation of the 4 and "a-? intermediate" phases. Smith and Morrice* have reported the effect of total impurity content on the resistivity of cerium at 4 and 293°K. In none of these reports, however, is it apparent that the distributions of the impurities were determined, L.r., whether the impurities were present in inclusions or in solid solution in the matrix is not mentioned; nor does it appear that the phase purity of the cerium was always considered. In the present study, five different stocks of cerium were involved. One was represented by a single sample of electrowon cerium, which was all that had remained from a stock of high-purity material obtained from the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Reno, Nev., in 1959. The other four stocks were recently purchased from commercial sources and were specified to be 99.9 wt pct pure. EXPERIMENTAL Cerium stocks designated as #1, #2, #4, and #5 were obtained from commercial suppliers for the specific purpose of finding a reliable source of high-purity cerium. Although the purity level of the cerium was specified to be 99.9 pet, the specifications did not include limits as to the amounts of various impurities that would be acceptable. Consequently the chemical analyses of the different stocks varied widely. Stock #3, which had been obtained from the U.S. Bureau of Mines and which was the purest on the basis of chemical analyses, consisted of a single specimen of electrowon cerium. The lattice orientation of the crystal being studied must be known before such definitions can be made. Practically all the metallic crystals used do not have crystal faces—other than the unknown "plane of polish"; hence resort must be had to other means of determining orientations. Some use has been made of etch-figures, slip bands, optical properties, etc., for this purpose; but for accurate results, and because of the fewer restrictions to their use, the various X-ray methods have been the most satisfactory.' The methods that have been used may be divided into two general classes: (1) oscillation methods, and (2) transmission Laue methods.² The disadvantages of these methods are numerous, chief among them being the time required to determine a complete orientation. No method proposed so far is wholly satisfactory for determining the orientation of a small macrograin within a polycrystalline aggregate.

IN view of the approaching visit to Japan and the Imperial Steel Works at Yawata by our members, the following notes on present conditions in the industry there will be of interest. The data were collected by the representatives of the Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce in Japan and are furnished here through the courtesy of the Department. In connection with the proposed suspension of both new and old Government undertakings and the general depression in building, which is expected to result from the retrenchment policy of the Government, some cuts in iron and steel prices have been made by dealers. It is expected that the Yawata Steel Works may reduce its round bar prices for November delivery by 1 yen.

Asbestos ranks among the leading minerals produced in Canada. It is also mined in Russia, Rhodesia, South Africa, Cyprus, Italy, the U.S.A., Japan, China and several other countries. The most abundant variety, chrysotile, and also the most valuable form of asbestos produced, makes up 90% of the world's supply. In Canada, chrysotile is found in the provinces of British Columbia, Ontario, Newfoundland as well as in Quebec, the latter accounting for almost 90% of all the fibre produced in this country. A number of developments emerging this year could make 1968 a record production and export year for Canada's asbestos mining industry. Asbestos fibre consumption in increasing in the U.S., Canada, up 10% to date this year, Japan and in Latin America. Demand in Western Europe is again on the upswing, following a cut-back last year. As a result, shipments from Canadian mines for the first eight months of this year reached some 916,968 tons versus 873,402 in 1967, an increase of 43,566 tons or 5%. Indications are that Canadian asbestos production will for the first time ever top 1.5 million tons in 1968.

FOR nearly a century, the Corocoro deposit has been renowned among geologists from the fact that it shares with the Lake Superior deposits of the United States the distinction of being the only important copper districts where native copper is worked commercially. The Corocoro district, named after the city of Corocoro, the capital of the Province of Pacajes (Department of La Paz, Bolivia) is situated towards the western edge of the Bolivian high plateau, at an altitude of a little over 13,000 ft. The most interesting part of the district is that immediately surrounding the city of Corocoro, at a distance, by railway, of 65 miles from La Paz and 210 miles to the Chilean port of Arica on the Pacific Coast. The climate of the region is that of the semi-desert, dry and relatively cold, with big differences of temperature between day and night. The rainy season begins in December and ends in March. The cupriferous lodes of Corocoro have not attracted as much interest as the silver mines of Potosi but they have been known for a long time. In the precolonial period the Indians were using the charquis, or natural native copper sheets, to make small brass objects, and the beautiful pale green brochantite of the outcrops as a source of green pigments. During the colonial period, the oxidized ores of the outcrops were worked for copper, which was used by the mint at Potosi for making currency. The native copper ores were neglected because the Spanish miners were at a loss how to concentrate and smelt them. About 1830, work by rudimentary processes, which were improved little by little, was begun on the native copper ores. The total production of native copper in the following hundred years amounted to 100,000 tons. This native copper, which was remarkably pure, was much appreciated on the European markets before the introduction of electrolytic copper. It was useful for making special ornamental brass or bronze and the granular concentrates of native copper, called barrilla, containing 80 to 85 per cent copper were suitable for making copper sulfate by direct oxidation and subsequent leaching with sulfuric acid.

A simple rnodel for interstitial solid solutions has been devised in which each solute atom interacts with the solzlent lattice in such a way as to exclude an integral number of nearest-neighbor sites from being occupied by solute atoms. The vemaining interstitial sites ave not affected. In calculating the entropy of such a solution the increase in the number of interstitial sites available to solute atoms due to the ozlerlap of blocked sites is taken into account. The ther-modynamic functions and the solute activity fov the solution rnodel are calculated. It is shown that considevation of the overlap sues vise to a correction term of the order 8' ( where 0 is the ratio of solute to solvent atoms) in the thevmodynamic functions of the solution and the solute activity. The theo,uetical equation for the solute activity was used to analyze the available data for the activity of carbon in austenite at three different temperatures. The use of a computer enabled many comparisons to be made between the experimental activity data and those predicted by both the complex blocking model and the simple, widely used blocking model in which the ozierlapping of blocked sites is not taken into consideration. Even though at the highest concentvations oj carbon the value of 0 is small it is shown that the best fit to the experimental data is found with the complex blocking model. RECENTLY it has been shown by analysis of gas-solid equilibriums that many interstitial solid solutions can be described by the quasi-regular solution model in which the partial energy of solution E, is independent of composition and, apart from a composition-independent term due to nonconfigurational factors, the partial entropy is that of an ideal solution. Dilute solutions of nitrogen in both bcc and fcc iron,' dilute solutions of oxygen and silver,' carbon in a Fe,' and dilute solutions of carbon in ? Fe2 are all quasi-regular. In addition many hydrogen-metal solutions, both dilute and concentrated (with the notable exceptions of the H-Ni and H-Pd systems), can be described by this model.3 However, it has been shown that, at various temperatures, solutions of carbon in ? Fe begin to depart strongly from quasi-regular behavior at low concentrations. A plot of the activity of carbon in ? Fe relative to pure graphite vs atom fraction of carbon (Cc) calculated from Smith's data4 begins to depart from the (nonlinear) plot for a quasi-regular solution at about Cc = 0.02. Several statistical models have been proposed to account for the thermodynamic behavior of carbon in y Fe. Darken and smith4 set up a model in which a carbon atom in its octahedral site in the fcc lattice has either one or no neighboring carbon atoms in the twelve nearest-neighbor octahedral sites. It is assumed that the number of carbon atoms having more than one nearest neighbor is negligibly small and that a solute atom does not interact with another solute atom located at a greater distance than the first shell of interstitial sites. Thus this model contains two characteristic interaction energies. Darken and Smith showed that this model gives reasonable agreement with the measured variation of carbon activity ac with composition. It is noteworthy that Darken and Smith concluded from their analysis of the activity data using this model that there was a repulsive force between carbon atoms in austenite which reduces the concentration of C-C pairs below that corresponding to random mixing. Recently Aaronson, Domian, and pound5 have considered in detail the statistical model developed by Lachere and by Fowler and Guggenheim7 and have shown that it is compatible with the activity data for carbon in austenite. In Darken's model the energy of solution of carbon in austenite is dependent on temperature and concentration; the departure from Henry's law arises from the concentration dependence of the energy of solution. In Aaronson, Domian, and Pound's discussion of the Lacher, Fowler, Guggenheim model the interaction energy wy between adjacent carbon atoms in austenite is strongly temperature-dependent. Aaronson et al . suggested that this temperature dependence of wy and hence the energy of solution of carbon could be explained either by the formation of clusters of carbon atoms (despite the repulsive nature of wy) or by the dual occupancy of the octahedral and tetrahedral sites by the carbon atoms. WORK was undertaken two years ago at the Hammond Laboratory for the purpose of determining the magnitude of the elastic range in single crystals of pure metals by means of creep tests, the assumption being made that if a true elastic range exists, the elastic limit represents the maximum stress for no creep. A sensitive extensometer was constructed, and creep tests were made on zinc single crystals at a variety of loads and temperatures1. It was soon discovered that there is tip measurable elastic limit in ductile zinc single crystals at, or above, room temperature. The inference that pure metallic single crystals may not possess a definite elastic range was not justified, however, since zinc had been tested in creep only above its recrystallization temperature, and several investiga-tors2,3,4 had already shown that above the recrystallization temperature polycrystalline metals will flow under very small stresses, while below that temperature stresses of a much larger magnitude are required. For that reason, it was decided to extend the study of the elastic limit to other metals having a higher recrystallization temperature than zinc. Aluminum and silver were selected, because of the ease of obtaining pure materials and of preparing large single crystals, and because the crystallo-graphic glide system of these metals is well known. Owing to the limited time available, the elastic range was investigated by slow tensile tests rather than by creep tests.

Dynamic elastic properties of dry and water-saturated Green River shale samples were computed from compressional- and shear-wave velocity measurements. P- and 5-wave velocity measurements were made in three mutually perpendicular directions with respect to the bedding planes. Measurements were also made in several different directions by varying the angle between the bedding planes and the direction of propagation of the wave for angles of 0, 30, 45, 60 and 909 The oriented samples were subjected to both confining pressure and axial loads, in excess of the confining stress, in the direction of propagation. In general, P- and S-wave velocities increased with increasing stress levels, with a corresponding increase in Young's modulus. Water saturation caused the P-wave velocity to increase and the S-wave velocity to decrease. Elastic moduli decreased upon saturation, except for Pois son's ratio, which increased, indicating some degree of weakening of the material. The samples showed a moderate degree of anisotropy; this was to be expected from the laminated nature and shallow occurrence of Green River shale. INTRODUCTION This paper presents some results of an experimental determination of the elastic coefficients of anisotropic materials (in particular, finely layered rocks and minerals such as Green River shale) from measurements of dilatational and shear-ultrasonic-wave velocities. Ultrasonic techniques have been used extensively in nondestructive testing. Several methods have been proposed by Mcskimmin, 1 and some of these have been used successfully to measure ultrasonic velocities in rocks. Hughes and Cross, 2 Wyllie et al., 3 and Birch 4,5 developed pulse first-arrival techniques for the measurement of dilatational and shear velocities. Williams and Lamb 6 used the method of cancellation of a traveling wave, which was later modified by Myers et al.' and perfected by McSkimmin. 8 Although this method is highly accurate, it has not been used as widely as the pulse-transmission methods recently reported by Jamieson and Hoskins 9 King,10 and Mattaboni and Schreiber. 11 It has been common practice to use some form of crystal transducers, either quartz or ceramic, that has been cut or polarized in different directions in order to generate either compressional or shear waves. However, accurate determination of shear wave velocities has been difficult due to problems that arise in obtaining a pure shear wave from cross-polarized crystals, which usually also generate a small amount of compressional energy. As reported by Gregory, 12 this energy can be seen as a long precursor preceding the sharp break of the shear first arrival. The need for generating pure shear waves led to interest in mode-conversion techniques, which are based upon conversion of the mode of vibration through wave reflection or refraction at a discontinuity. Arenberg13 showed that for certain materials and for certain angles of incidence it is possible to generate pure shear modes by reflection at a boundary. Jamieson and Hoskins 9 used a pyrex glass-air interface for generating pure shear waves, and King 10 used this method successfully for measuring shear-wave velocities in rocks. Gregory l4 arrived at a similar result by refraction of a wave at an aluminum-oil interface. A plane compressional wave, traveling in the oil phase, is incident on the aluminum at an angle larger than the critical angle for compressional waves, and thereby generates a purely transverse, plane-polarized wave in the aluminum. During the last few years methods have been developed that allow the simultaneous determination of shear and compressional velocities in solids.

LESS than a decade ago the consumption of coal in Alaska was practically limited to the salmon canneries and the few lode-mines and settlements along the Pacific coast of the Ter¬ritory. The sparse population of the interior depended on the forests, that of the shores of Bering Sea and the Arctic Ocean on driftwood for fuel. All this has changed. The thousands who have sought and mined gold on the Seward peninsula since 1898 have much impoverished the long-accumulated supply of driftwood, and at the same time the constantly increasing demand for fuel, on the part of the placer-camps and steamers, has resulted in heavy inroads being made on the accessible timber of the Yukon and its tributaries. While on the one hand the immediately available store of wood has decreased, on the other the consumption of fuel because of the rapid expansion of the mining and fishery industries and the attendant growth of population has much increased. Alaska, therefore, offers a constantly growing market for coal and other fuels. As the local coal-production has been insignificant, the demand has been met by importations from Washington, British Columbia, and even from Pennsylvania and Australia. Fuel-Consumption Mr. D. H. Jarvis, Collector for Alaska, has kept systematic records of the trade of the Territory since 1903. The statistics of the coal-importations of the past two years are shown in Table I. If data were available for a longer period of years, the increase of coal-importations would be much more striking.

THE practical importance of a knowledge of the rates of diffusion of carbon and of alloying elements in steel has often been pointed out 1,13 This importance ties chiefly, though by no means only, in the study of carburizing and in the study of reactions involved in the eutectoid inversion in steel The present paper is one of a series in which the rates of diffusion of carbon and of alloying elements in y-Fe and their mutual effects are measured with precision The present paper reports the results of meas¬urements of diffusion coefficients D of manganese in -y-Fe over wide ranges of temperature, and concentration, and of the effect of carbon and impurities and of grain size upon these diffusion coefficients [$] Data on the rate of diffusion of manganese in y-Fe have been reported by Fry2 and by Paschke and Hauttmann 3 Claussen4 calculated the diffusion coefficient D from Fry's data as 3 X 10-10 sq cm per sec at 960°, which will be shown to be incorrect by many orders of magnitude Paschke and Hauttmann gave a rough value of 9 6 X 10-8 sq cm per sec at 1400° Neither of these workers considered the variation of D with concentration and with temperature, and neither studied the effect of carbon METHOD AND MATERIALS Method -The method employed is identical with that used earlier 5 Owing to the volatility of manganese and the consequent loss of manganese from the outer surfaces of the welded diffusion bars, these surfaces were discarded The diffusion anneals were performed in argon, except one (test 18) in which hydrogen was employed for purposes noted below The temperatures reported are accurate to about 3° and constant within I°C , the diffusion times are reported to the nearest half hour The specimens were furnace-cooled after the diffusion anneal at about 2° per min Layers, usually 0 004 in thick, parallel to the welded interface, were machined from the specimens after the diffusion anneal and analyzed for manganese to 0 01 per cent Mn, the distances of these layers from the interface was measured to ±0 0002 in The concentration-penetration curves obtained were analyzed by both the Grube and the Matano solutions e The D values calculated by these two methods do not differ appreciably 5 The Grube solution was used except in tests in which the effect of concentration upon D was greater than 50 per cent, in such cases the Matano method, which explicitly provides for the variation of D with concentration,1 is the more reliable In general, the number of layers machined from the zones of variable composition were large enough to permit the use of the average layer composition as that of the center of the layer In 3 of the 30 tests, however, this is not justified, and the D values

ONE Of the most significant developments in the iron industry in recent years has been the discovery and opening of enormous reserves of low-grade ore in eastern and northeastern Cuba. The two principal fields are the Mayari and the Moa, situated on Nipe bay, in the Province of Oriente. A less well-known district of the same type is that of Baracoa, at the east of the island, and another is in Camaguey province in central Cuba. In the comprehensive estimates of the iron-ore reserves of the world, published during the summer of 1910 by the International Geological Congress in Sweden,' these Cuban deposits are estimated at about 2,000,000,000 tons. Certain it is that the reserve is a large one. The Spanish-American Iron Co., the Juragua Iron Co. (Bethlehem Steel Co.), the U. S. Steel Corporation, and others have been active in this exploration.. The Spanish-American Iron Co. has established a port for the handling of these ores at Felton, has built a railway 16 miles to the ore-fields, and has opened up deposits for steam-shovel mining. Its expenditures have reached an aggregate of about $6,000,000 in preparation for the handling of these ores. Shipment of the ore to Sparrow's Point, Md., has begun and may be expected to rise to a considerable amount in the near future. The ore reaches this point at a cost per unit of iron considerably lower than Lake Superior ores, and the presence of a low percentage of nickel gives a desirable steel. It is not the purpose of this article to consider these ores from a commercial stand-point, but rather to discuss their-origin. A mathetnatical model of heal transfer in continuously cast steel slabs is described. The model, consisting of a unidimensional transient conduction equation and boundary condition equations, has been pvogrammed for computer solution. Temperatuve and solidification profiles calculated for a 6-in. slab, being cast under several conditions of secondary cooling, are presented and compared. Calculated solidification profiles are in agreement with reported expevinle~ztal values. For the mold zone, the predicted slab shell thickness can be described by: Resuilts of the study indicate that multibank spray cooling followed by radiant cooling should be employed when solidifying thick slabs with minimum surface temperature of 1600°F. Under these conditions, a 6-in. slab can be expected to solidify in about 8.3 min. Computer results also indicate that radiant cooling can replace spray cooling during solidification of the final 30 pct of slab with little increase in overall solidification time. CONTINUOUS casting has come to the forefront of the steel industry in recent years because of economic advantages resulting from increased yields and elimination of several processing steps. Considerable work, however, remains to be done regarding modifications to the process and operating procedures. Both a lack of operating plants in this country and the experimental difficulties associated with direct measurements on moving castings have made determination of solidification rates and temperature distributions difficult. An alternate approach is to mathematically simulate heat transfer in a continuously cast section, and then calculate the temperature distributions as a function of the controllable variables of the process. Simulation of heat transfer during solidification requires that a nonlinear mathematical problem be solved. As pointed out by Ruddle,' there are two mathematical approaches to the problem- the analytical approach and the numerical approach. While the analytical approach is certainly the more elegant of the two, it does require a number of inexact assumptions because of the complexity of the problem. For example, noteworthy analytical treatments of heat transfer in continuous casting have been developed by Savage Hills,3 and pehlke4 only by making one or more simplifying assumptions such as invariant thermophysical properties, constant heat-transfer coefficients in the mold, and linear temperature profiles in the shell. Simplifying assumptions such as these can introduce considerable uncertainty in the validity of results calculated with analytical solutions. Numerical solutions, which are considerably more versatile, appear to be better suited for solving solidification problems. Complex variations in the boundary conditions and variable thermophysical properties can be handled readily with this technique. Whereas numerical computations can be long and tedious when done by hand, results can now be obtained quite rapidly with the use of either the digital or analog computer. Several numerical models of heat transfer in continuous casting have been published. In 1963, Adenis, Coats, and Ragones published a numerical model used to calculate temperature distributions in direct-chill-cast magnesium billets. More recently, Donaldson and Hess 6 presented results obtained with a numerical computer model of heat transfer in continuously cast steel billets. In the present study, a model of unidimensional heat transfer in continuously cast slabs is presented. The method of solution on a digital computer is also included. Calculated temperature distributions and solidification profiles for various schemes of secondary cooling along with attempts to verify the model are also discussed. MATHEMATICAL MODEL The schematic representation of the slab continuous casting process in Fig. 1 illustrates that the slab passes through three distinct zones of cooling. Accordingly, the mathematical model consists of three parts: 1) solidification in the mold; 2) solidification in the spray cooling zone ; 3) solidification in the radiant cooling zone. Heat-Transfer Equations. The model was developed bymaking a heat balance on a horizontal slice of slab over the time period required for the slice to proceed from the liquid metal meniscus in the mold to the cutoff station. As shown in Fig. 2, the imaginary slice extends from the center line to the surface of the slab. As the slice moves downward, heat is conducted from the center line to the surface of the slab at a rate governed by the surface boundary condition and thermophysical properties of the metal in the slice. SIZING is the process of separating mixed particles into groups of particles all of the same size, or into groups in which all particles L range between certain definite maximum and minimum sizes. In coal preparation, sizing is generally accomplished by passing the coal over screens. Separation by differential settling in air or water currents has been adapted to the special field of separating very fine sizes, and these processes are in commercial use to a relatively small extent in the coal industry. Separation with screens is a very old industrial practice. Agricola 1 described the use of screens for ore treatment in the middle ages. In the literature of the British coal industry references were made to the screening of coal as early as 1589, but the practice of extensive sizing for the market did not become general until the last half of the nineteenth century. In America, the practice of sizing developed first in the Pennsylvania anthracite region, beginning with the use of rakes2 in the mine working places to recover coarse coal. This mining procedure left the fines in the mine. Preparation outside the mine started with the installation of stationary cast-iron plates with 4 to 6-in. square holes. The run-of-mine coal was dumped upon the platforms, the large pieces of rock were picked out by hand, and the large lumps of coal were broken with hammers. The term "breaker," which still applies to the anthracite-preparation plant, originated with this practice, but the term is no longer descriptive of the entire function of the plant. In 1884, the first power-operated anthracite coal breaker3 was erected by Gideon Bart at his colliery at Wolf Creek near Minersville, Pa. The methods employed for the determination of oxides and oxygen in ferrous materials may be roughly classed in two groups, "wet" methods and "hot" methods, the first group including the iodine, electrolytic, mercuric chloride, hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, and chlorine methods; the second group including the vacuum-fusion and hydrogen-reduction methods. The wet methods depend upon preferential solubility in a selected medium to separate the metallic portion of the sample from the oxygen-containing constituents. Subsequent analysis of the insoluble residue permits the isolation and separate determination of individual oxides and compounds. The hot methods depend upon the reduction of the oxide constituents of the sample by means of carbon or hydrogen at elevated temperatures. With the exception of the recently developed fractional vacuum-fusion method, the hot methods do not identify individual oxides and compounds but yield only a single value representing the sum of the oxygen contents of several or all of the oxide constituents present. With such diversity in the principles and aims of the different groups, it is not surprising that concordance of results by different methods has usually been difficult to obtain. The present cooperative attempt to define more rigorously than has been possible heretofore the accuracy and limits of usefulness of the various methods, originated in correspondence between Dr. John Johnston, Director of Research of the United States Steel Corporation, and other interested metallurgists. The plan was, briefly, to submit identical samples to a number of laboratories for analysis by different methods and to collate the results of these analyses. The project was endorsed by the Iron and Steel Division of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers at the annual meeting in February, 1933, and has been conducted under the joint sponsorship of the Iron and Steel Division and the National Bureau of Standards. Reaction of oxygen and bituminous coal starts as soon as the coal bed is exposed to air and, with some coals, proceeds with significant velocity even at normal temperatures and at normal oxygen partial pressures of one-fifth of an atmosphere. At higher temperatures, the reaction is greatly accelerated and ultimately a condition is reached where the process is very rapid and we then speak of combustion. It is the purpose of the present paper to discuss the reactions of oxygen and coal at temperatures below those of active combustion. It is these low temperature oxidation reactions which are responsible for heating in storage and for marked changes in agglutinating proper-ties. These reactions may also be employed for the preparation of organic acids, which are of direct interest to the chemical industry. For convenience in discussion, the low temperature reactions of oxygen and bituminous coal can be roughly divided into three stages though there is, of course, overlapping. Stage I is a surface oxidation stage, characterized by the addition of oxygen, with the formation of oxygen containing groups some of which have acidic properties. Carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and water may be formed con-comitantly and are always liberated at higher temperatures, and in cases where the oxidation is prolonged. Superficially, the coal is little affected by this primary stage of oxidation and usually only minor changes in ultimate composition result. There may be definite changes in coking and coking properties, and heat of combustion susceptibility to further oxidation. The presence of acidic groups can be demonstrated by specific reactions. These groups may show cation exchange properties like the mineral zeolites. The formation of oxalic acid has been reported. If the oxidation is continued, a large fraction of the organic material of the coal is converted ultimately into alkali soluble, acid insoluble products, which have been given the name "regenerated humic acids" and which are the characteristic products of Stage 2. These humic acids, in the solid stage, do not differ greatly in appearance from the original coal, but show large differences in chemical composition and chemical and physical properties. Along with the humic acids, carbon dioxide and some of the water soluble types of Stage 3, are also formed. If the oxidation is carried still further, the humic acids may be degraded completely to the simpler, lower molecular weight acids of Stage 3 which are characterized by solubility in acid as well as in alkaline media, and by their orange, yellow or white colors. Additional carbon dioxide is formed in the transformation from Stage 2 to Stage 3 and, for a number of American coals, a maximum yield of the water soluble types of acids is reached when about 50 pct of the carbon of the coal is converted to carbon dioxide. SOME observations relative to the U-Zn system have been made by other investigators. Chipman1 and Carter2 have reported the preparation of several U-Zn alloys and point out that these alloys are generally difficult to prepare. Chipman1 reported evidence for a high melting compound at about 90 atomic pct Zn and the possible existence of a eutec-tic between the compound and uranium. Raynor," in a theoretical discussion of the alloying properties of uranium, included zinc among the elements predicted to have little or no solubility in a, p, or y uranium. In the present investigation, thermal analyses, X-ray, metallographic, and vapor-pressure data were obtained to determine the phase boundaries. The relatively high zinc pressure over most of the alloys at temperatures of 900 °C and above proved troublesome and special techniques had to be employed in preparing suitable alloys. Materials and Preparation of Alloys The metals employed in this investigation were Ames Laboratory biscuit uranium containing less than 500 ppm total impurities and Bunker Hill slab zinc or Baker Analyzed reagent granulated zinc, both with a purity of 99.99+ pct. Due to the high vapor pressure of zinc and the high reactivity of both uranium and zinc with oxygen at only moderately high temperatures, alloys were prepared in closed containers which had either been evacuated or evacuated and filled with helium. High purity magnesia, magnesia containing 10 pct calcium fluoride, and tantalum proved to be suitable crucible materials. Tw-o different procedures, described below, were used to prepare alloys, the latter being the most satisfactory. The metals, uranium turnings and granulated zinc, were cleaned with dilute nitric acid, rinsed, dried, and placed immediately in a helium-fill'ed dry box. The two metals were placed' in a 10 mil Ta crucible. The charge was enclosed in the tantalum crucible by welding on a preformed tantalum cap. This assembly was enclosed inside a stainless steel (AISI 309) bomb. The bomb was made by welding a piece of stainless steel plate on each end of a stainless steel pipe. All these operations were carried out in a helium atmosphere. These assemblies were heated in a muffle furnace at temperatures between 1100" and 1200°C for 10 to 15 min or held as long as 15 to 20 hr in the 950" to 1000°C temperature range before quenching. Spectrographic and chemical analyses showed no tantalum pickup by the alloys, indicating no reaction between the alloys and the crucibles. However, some of these crucibles failed, probably due to imperfections in the welds of the stainless steel or tantalum crucibles. The second and most satisfactory method was to prepare the alloys by powder metallurgy techniques. The procedure was to press degreased and acid-etched uranium turnings with granulated zinc into 20 g compacts under 20,000-psi pressure. The compacts were placed in MgO crucibles, and sealed in evacuated Vycor or fused silica tubes. The alloys were then heated as long as two weeks at about 550°C in a muffle furnace. The pressed compacts were observed to expand by several volume percent during heating and it was necessary to make allowances for this expansion in order to avoid breaking the crucible and Vycor tube. This method was found very satisfactory for preparing alloys which were suitable for thermal analysis or vapor pressure studies. Experimental Methods and Results The phase diagram for the U-Zn system at 1 atrn pressure, shown in Fig. 1, is based primarily on vapor pressure measurements and on thermal analysis taken at temperatures below 950°C. Fig. 2 shows the U-Zn diagram at 5 atrn pressure, constructed on the basis of thermal analysis of alloys in sealed containers up to 1150°C and on the basis of metallographic, X-ray, and analytical data. The alloys sealed under vacuum were actually under their own vapor pressure and those sealed in an atmosphere of helium were under an additional pressure due to the helium. At temperatures up to 1100°C the zinc pressure is 5 atrn or less for these alloys; consequently the maximum pressure over the alloys sealed under a helium atmosphere was 10 atrn or less at temperatures up to 1100°C. Changes in pressure of this order of magnitude do not appreciably alter the position of most solid-solid or liquid-solid phase boundaries. In constructing the phase diagram for a pressure of 5 atm, the effect of pressure on all phase boundaries except those for liquid-vapor or solid-vapor regions was considered negligible.

Josephtown Smelter employs the St. Joe-developed electrothermic process for producing zinc metal and zinc oxide. The process uses resistance-type electric furnaces. Flow of current through the sintered ore and coke charge develops the energy required for smelting at the reaction sites. To produce zinc metal, the furnace off-Gases bubble through a large "U"-tube filled with molten zinc which condenses the zinc to liquid; the metal is then mechanically cast into slabs. To produce zinc oxide, the furnace vapors burn in air and the resultant powders are collected. The smelter comprises three distinct circuits. One circuit produces American Process zinc oxide and high grade metal; another circuit produces tailor-made alloys of controlled lead and cadmium content; the third circuit produces prime western zinc metal and feedstock which is refined into special High grade metal and French Process zinc oxide. The roasting circuit utilizes multiple-hearth furnaces for deleading the zinc concentrates; fluid bed and suspension roasters are employed for desulfurization. Sintering produces a hard, porous furnace feed. The flexible smelting process is adaptable to consuming various kinds of secondary material. Extensive residue treatment accomplishes high overall zinc recovery. Smelter by-products include sulfuric acid, cadmium, and mercury.
