The demand for crude oil on the Pacific Coast during the year 1945. was so acute that the California crude supply had to be augmented by tank-car imports from the Texas and Rocky Mountain fields. Crude imports reached a high of 64,800 bbl. per day during June, with a total of 14,259,000 bbl. imported during the first 11 .months. The U. S. Navy also implemented the crude output from California pools by drilling and completing approximately 300 wells in the Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 1 (Elk Hills), from which an established production of 65,000. bbl. per day was reached in late February and maintained until Aug. 17, 1945, when it was reduced to its preprogram level of 15,000 bbl. per day. Even with the conclusion of the Pacific war on V-J day (Aug. 14), the military petroleum product requirements have permitted little material reduction in output of California crude to prewar rates. During the year, a total of 327-760,000 bbl. of crude was produced, or 19 per cent of the total crude production within the United States during the same period, as compared with 310,996,000 bbl. or 18.4 per cent of the nation's crude production in 1944.

The Precambrian of Midcontinent United States includes a metamorphic belt of probable Middle Precambrian age, a belt of Keweenawan volcanics and sediments, and widespread igneous activity that extended from Iowa to Texas. Most of the present structural configuration of the Midcontinent was developed by epeirogenic movements during the Paleozoic. The dominant elements are basins and arches. Three major metallogenic provinces occur in the Midcontinent. They include the Missouri Precambrian iron ores, the Lake Superior copper ores, and the Mississippi Valley lead-zincbarite- fluorite deposits. Several large iron deposits, occurring in rhyolite and andesite host rocks, are known. Both discordant massive bodies and replacement- type bodies occur. The iron deposits are believed to have been formed during the period of igneous activity. They are essentially the same age as the volcanics and older than the granites that intrude the volcanics. The Lake Superior copper ores include two established districts, the Keweenawan district and White Pine, and the copper-nickel deposits in the Duluth gabbro. The lead-zinc-barite-fluorite deposits include four major districts, Southeast Missouri, Upper Mississippi Valley, Tri-State, and Illinois-Kentucky, and at least eight minor districts. Ore may occur in stratiform deposits and in veins. The major districts all contain stratiform deposits, but several have produced appreciable quantities of vein ore. Only vein deposits are known in some of the smaller districts. The major features of all districts can be catalogued in terms of host rocks, structural patterns of districts, types of ore-bearing structures, and mineralogical characteristics. From these features, a Mississippi Valley type ore body, in its type area, can be defined.

Fine colloidal gold near Carlin, Nevada is disseminated in leached carbonate strata of the Roberts Mountains Formation in the Lynn "window" of the Roberts Mountains thrust fault. The ore body is generally stratiform and is more or less conformable to altered beds near the top of the formation, underlying Devonian limestones. Two sequences of mineralization are recognized: ( 1) an earlier base metal-barite assemblage related to early Cretaceous intrusives (121 ± 5 m.y.), and (2) a later low temperature Au-As-Hg-Sb assemblage of near surface emplacement. The earlier sequence consisting of sparse galena and sphalerite in barite with anomalous amounts of zinc, lead, nickel and copper, associated with dikes of dacitic composition, is of little economic importance. The later sequence of gold, realgar, cinnabar, and stibnite associated with extensive silicification and argillic alteration of limestone beds, has resulted in important deposits of gold. Argillic alteration of hydrothermally leached carbonate strata has provided the environment in which the most prominent gold deposition took place. Carbonate minerals in the limestone host rock have been replaced by microcrystalline quartz and chalcedony to form stratiform silica masses and recrystallized lenses of euhedral quartz. Zones of porous silicification are light gray to white, elliptical in shape, and more or less follow bedding. Silicification is bordered by argillic alteration and pyritization. Deposition of gold usually lies in a zonal pattern that encircles chimney areas of silicification.

It is safe to say that of all the different materials that go to make up electrical machinery, iron is the most important. Upon its magnetic and electrical quality depends not only the efficiency of the machine but, to a very large extent, the cost. Aside from the mechanical strength, there are three characteristics of iron that are of importance in this connection, viz., magnetic hysteresis, electrical resistance, and magnetic permeability. In the homopolar machine, where the magnetic flux is unidirectional, permeability is the only important factor, but in all other machines the flux is reversed in one or more parts and causes losses due to hysteresis and eddy currents. The eddy-current loss depends largely upon the electrical resistance of the iron; the higher the resistance the lower the loss, under otherwise identical conditions. These hysteresis and eddy-current losses cause heating of the machine, and as they depend upon the magnetic density in the iron, this density must be regulated so that the heating shall not be excessive. If the hysteresis and eddy-current losses and the permeability of the magnetic circuit will permit an increase in the magnetic density, or, in other words, a decrease in the amount of iron, this in turn will mean a decrease in the amount of copper needed, with a consequent decrease in the copper loss. It is thus seen that, indirectly as well as directly, the above characteristics have an important bearing on both the efficiency and the cost of electrical machinery. In general, it may be said that iron for electrical machinery should have the following characteristics: (1) low hysteresis loss, (2) high electrical resistance, and (3) high permeability. These are the characteristics that investigators have been striving to attain since electrical machinery first came into use. Until the beginning of the present century, Swedish charcoal iron was regarded as the best grade of iron for magnetic purposes, and even now it ranks high among the various grades used. FOR a number of years, the Department of Petroleum Economics of The Chase National Bank has been conducting a study of the capital employed in the petroleum industry. The technique followed is that of combining and summarizing the available financial and operating data for a group of thirty representative oil companies, doing about two thirds of the domestic business of the entire industry. This paper presents the results of the findings for the year 1943, and supplements the survey, "Sources, Disposition, and Characteristics of the Capital Employed by Thirty Oil Companies During the Nine-Year Period, 1934-1942," presented before the Petroleum Division of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers on Feb. 24, 1944, and also published as a pamphlet by The Chase National Bank.

1. INTRODUCTION. THE general impression regarding the preparation of merchantable anthracite is that it is confined to a colossal, grimy structure, called a "coal-breaker." This name is misnomer; for the desired result is not to break the coal, but to prevent its being broken. Preparation may be said to begin at the face of the chamber, with the mining and loading of the coal. Local conditions vary, not only in the same field or basin, but also in the same mine, so that there is no fixed empirical rule governing the method of blasting or cutting coal. Tests should be made, when possible, to determine the explosive, or the mechanical coal-cutter, which will produce the largest percentage of what are locally known as " lump " and " prepared sizes " of anthracite. The prepared sizes are those mostly consumed for domestic purposes. All other sizes might be called by-products of the anthracite industry; for they are not especially desirable, being the degradation resulting from the mining and handling of a brittle or laminated material. Being low in volatile combustible matter, anthracite burns most successfully when nearly of a uniform size, permitting the easy passage of air through the voids. This accounts for the large number of sizes into which the coal is separated. Table I. gives the various sizes, the diameter of ring over and through which each size is made, and the usual purpose for which it is employed.

THE U-A1 binary system has been studied by Kaufmann and Gordon.' They have shown that three intermetallic compounds occur in the system: UAl², UAl², and a third compound tentatively identified as UA15. UA1³ is simple cubic, a, = 4.26A. Its unit cell contains one formula weight, and it is iso-morphous with AuCu³. UA1² is face-centered cubic, a, = 7.72A, with eight formula weights per unit cell. Rundle and Wilson have shown that it is iso-morphous with Cu²Mg.² A Debye-Scherrer pattern of the Al-rich compound indicated a more complex structure than either UA1² or UA1³. The following is a report of an investigation of the crystal structure of this compound and a determination of its stoi-chiometric formula. A melt of uranium (99.9 pct pure) and aluminum (99.9 pct pure) was prepared which contained about 25 pct U by weight. It was cooled from 950" to 650°C at a rate of 500" per hr and then taken from the furnace and air cooled. An X-ray diffraction pattern of the ingot showed only lines of aluminum and the Al-rich compound. Filings from the ingot were reacted with a solution of sodium hydroxide, producing a fine black powder, the diffraction pattern of which showed no traces of aluminum. A comparison of the Debye-Scherrer pattern of our sample with the data published by Kaufmann and Gordon1 showed that it is identical with the Al-rich phase which they reported. Single crystals were obtained by cooling the melt more slowly (about 50°C per hr). After reaction with sodium hydroxide, the crystals appeared as small black needles attached to the ingot surface. Cell Size, Space Group, and Uranium Positions A series of Weissenberg photographs for rotation about two of the crystallographic axes, taken with copper radiation filtered through nickel foil, revealed an orthorhombic cell of dimensions: a = 4.41 ± 0.02A b = 6.27 ± 0.02A c = 13.71 ± 0.03A Reflections of the type hkl were observed only if: h + k + I = 2n, of the type hkO only if: h = 2n and k = 2n, of the type h01 only if: h + 1 = 2n, and of the type Okl only if: k + 1=2n. Hence, the cell is body-centered with an 001 glide plane. The evidence for the existence of the glide plane is the observed extinction of 23 possible re- flections of the type hkO with at least one index odd. THE safety lamp is the most common and convenient apparatus for detecting inflammable gases in mines, the presence of gas being shown by a blue flame, called the cap, if the wick has been lowered to suppress the luminous flame. The height of the cap increases with the proportion of gas and with the temperature of the lamp flame. Lamps of the Wolf type, the fuel of which is benzine, have a hotter flame than lamps in which vegetable oils are used, such as the Davy, and the Clanny, and are more sensitive than the latter and their many modifications. The Piehler alcohol lamp gives a still higher cap while the Clowes hydrogen lamp is most sensitive of all. While the effect of the temperature of the source of ignition is well known, the writer knows of no previous attempt to correlate the change of this temperature with change of the height of the cap produced. In order to determine the height of the cap at various temperatures, it was necessary to have a source of ignition the temperature of which could he accurately controlled over a considerable range. This condition was met by a coil of wire of high fusing point heated by an electric current controlled by a variable resistance. The use of a coil offered the further advantage of freedom from complications due to the flame of a burning fuel. Such a flame, being itself of variable height, would to some extent raise or lower the elevation of the base of the cap and therefore add to the difficulty of determining the height of the cap. Besides this, the presence of a small cap from the lamp fuel, commonly known as the "fuel cap, " would interfere with the observation of small gas caps. After some experiment, a coil was made of platinum wire, No. 26, diameter 0.016 in. The coil was 17/64 in. (6.746 mm.) in outside diameter and had eight full turns in a length of ½ in. (12.69 mm.). SILICOSIS has been described in a report of the American Public Health Association as a disease due to breathing air containing silica, characterized anatomically by generalized fibrotic changes and the development of miliary nodulations in both lungs, and clinically by shortness of breath, decreased chest expansion, lessened capacity for work, absence of fever, increased susceptibility to tuberculosis (some or all of which symptoms may be present), and by characteristic X-ray findings. ... The disease is divided arbitrarily into first, second, and third stages for convenience of description and possible compensation purposes. At least two distinct types of silicosis are recognized, acute and chronic. The acute form was reported as early as 1713, when a British patent for grinding flint by wet methods was granted because the dry powdered material "proved very destructive to mankind, so much that any person, ever so healthful, working in that business cannot possibly survive over two years."

I. INTRODUCTION. WE owe to the courtesy of Mr. R. M. Raymond, Manager of the El Oro Mining & Railway Co., Ltd., the permission of publishing in this paper the results of a series of experiments and tests made in view of determining the economical limit to which the fine grinding of the ore by tube-mills could be carried on. For the sake of clearness, the following definitions are given of certain terms used in this paper, as well as of the units and screens in the experiments. Slime : In a general way " slime" is that mill-product, of which from 90 to 95 per cent, will pass a 200-mesh screen (0.067 mm. aperture), and which is treated as one class of material in the El Oro cyanide-plants. As a screen-product, slime constitutes all material that *ill pass a 200-mesh, screen. In sizing, the following products are distinguished:- Coarse Sand : That material remaining on a 100-mesh (0.111 mm. aperture) screen. Fine Sand : That passing through. 100-mesh and remaining on a 200-mesh (0.067 mm. aperture) screen. Slime: That passing through 200-mesh. Fines, which pass through 200-mesh and settle in 30 seconds, and silt, which does not settle in 1 minute. Sand-index : The number proportional to its total fineness considered from the economical point of view, as explained on page 93. Absolute extraction : The percentage of values actually brought into solution. Actual extraction: The percentage of values actually brought to the ziuc-boxes. Units : Dollars, U. S. Currency; pounds; and short tons (2,000 lb.). Gold is valued at $20.67, and silver at $0.50 per ounce. Ore bodies at Cornwall, Pennsylvania, have been mined since 1742 principally for iron from magnetite, but also for copper (in chalcopyrite), silver (in chalcopyrite), gold (in chalcopyrite), cobalt (in pyrite), sulfur, and crushed limestone aggregate. Metallization occurs as a limestone replacement above the essentially conformable, south dipping portion of a discordant saucershaped diabase sheet. Pre-Triassic and Triassic faulting have emplaced host Cambrian limestone and two Ordovician(?) hornfels units, now for the most part resting above diabase. Thermal metamorphism of carbonate-bearing country rocks largely to calc-silicates, is ubiquitous. Metasomatism, particularly of potassium, is unique to ore zones. Associated magnetite- actinolite mineralization replaces, in a preferential sequence, all earlier metamorphic and metasomatic minerals and rarely diabase chilled margin. Mineralogical (diopside, actinolite, mica, sulfides, oxides) and chemical (Fe, Cu, S, Co) zoning of the eastern ore body is focused down dip, near its western edge, along a major vertical fault through diabase. This zoning is spatially related to magnetite veins in diabase, to an ore body within diabase, and to a shear zone that probably extends through the sheet.

The electric arc welding of cast iron has been studied by Braune Lamberton, Schimpke, Kenyon, Gale Manufacturing Co., Wedemeyer Candy, Neese, Miller, Carter, American Welding Society, Namack Lebrun, Achenbach, Jansson, Xochendorffer and others.' The write of this paper has been able to obtain a series of cast irons, from gray tc white, without using cast-iron electrodes but by coating on wrought-iron bars mixtures of carborundum (Sic) and graphite (C). In this work, he found the curious phenomenon of barium carbonate.

THIRTY years ago, when I stood on the cliff of red fossil iron-ore, on Red mountain, Jefferson county, Ala., I asked what were the geological relations of this remarkable deposit. In reply I was told that it was a limestone colored and saturated by some unknown but wholly external influences, and that at a reasonable distance from the surface the color would disappear. I could find no satisfactory explanation either of the nature of this wonderful external permeating influence, or of the cause of such a ferrous impregnation selecting this one particular bed of limestone, to the exclusion of the higher and lower beds of the same material which are not even stained. I. THE PRESENT THEORY. Referring to this subject, Dana says:' "The clays, clayey sandstones and limestones of the Clinton epoch, through New York and the Appalachians, show that the mud-flats and sand-banks, and hence the shallow seas of the coast region, still continued. . . The beds of argillaceous iron-ore, which spread so widely through New York and some of the other States, south and west, could not have formed in an open sea, for clayey iron-deposits do not form under such circumstances. They are proof of extensive marshes, and, therefore, of land near the sea-level. The fragments of crinoids and shells found in these beds are evidence that they were, in part at least, salt-water marshes, and that the tides sometimes reached them." At first, this explanation seemed satisfactory, but the more I studied the ore the less satisfying the explanation became. 1. THIS paper outlines a method for rapid production of flat, granular surfaces on many of the medium hard- alloys. Grinding wheels and fabrics on wheels are not used; the purpose is accomplished by rubbing on emery papers and on fine abrasives heaped on hand boards. The advantages of chromic acid in the solutions for etching nickel and copper alloys are explained. Steels may require an additional step in the mechanical smoothing owing to the lack of an ideal etchant. Chloric acid is a. rapid etchant for steel. Thirty-six photomicrographs illustrate the steps in smoothing and the clearness with which structures can be rapidly exposed. New structures in low-carbon steels are announced. After a little practice, many materials can be finished within two or three minutes. CUPRONICKELS In the previous papers on the metallography of copper and magnesium which the author has presented to this Institute there has been an attempt to demonstrate the advantages of minimizing the mechanical work of surfacing and depending more on chemical means; the present paper continues the research into a still wider field. It is obvious that the success of a chemical method for smoothing and etching depends almost entirely on the use of a suitable reagent. The etchant must remove the surface granulations and outline the structures. A very special type of reaction between reagent and metal must be displayed. Promiscuous corrosion or the intensification of the attack about local couples -formed by impurities or components must not be in evidence. There are several reagents that etch highly polished nickel and copper alloys very well. Acidified ferric chloride solutions, concentrated and dilute nitric acid solutions, and nitric and acetic acids in acetone have -been used to good advantage for the purpose. However, if they are expected to etch rather deeply-that is, smooth as well as characterize-the results may be far from satisfactory.

WHEN an Alaskan prospector makes a new mineral discovery he stakes out his claims and then starts prospecting for a near-by landing field. This may be a convenient lake but more often it is a gravel bar along a river, where, by cutting off some brush and throwing the larger rocks to one side and then tying a flour sack to a pole, he may decoy some intrepid aviator into testing it gingerly with the wheels of his plane. It was only a few years ago that .the fence around the baseball park at Fairbanks, Alaska, was taken down so that planes could get in and out of the ball park without ripping off boards. Today the grandstand is lost among the modern hangars which line one side of a modern and busy airport. Planes come and go all during the day, and in summer, when there is no darkness, the night stillness is frequently broken by the hum of a motor overhead. Fairbanks is the hub of interior Alaska and from that hub airplanes radiate in all directions to mining camps large and small. An air industry of comparable size is based at the town of Anchorage, and in fact there are but few towns of more than 200 population in the Territory that do not have one or more planes based there.

THE Industrial Minerals Division this year held no individual sessions of its own except the business meeting Tuesday afternoon. One session was held jointly with the Society of Economic Geologists, one with the Milling Methods Committee, and two with the Society of Economic Geologists and the Mining Geology Committee. At all of these meetings the attendance was better than usual and the Tuesday afternoon session, with nearly 400 present, probably set a new record for the Division. Joint sessions seem extremely popular when papers of mutual interest are presented. On Monday afternoon, mica was the predominating subject. The North Carolina mines provided most of the information presented, although the discussion brought out similarities with the New England mines. B. C. Burgess particularly stressed the fact that with the existing curtailment of mica from India it is necessary to get the most mica in the shortest time from the mines in this country. He said that the Colonial Mica Corp. hopes to have 1000 mines operating in the near future. This seems a great number, but when one considers that these mines employ from 3 to 28 men, mostly nearer the low figure, the output of each mine is relatively small. Although the price of mica is from six to ten times the prewar price, the yield of 8 to 150 lb. of mica per ton of raw ore does not provide high returns to the producer.

FoR the convenience of those who do not care to enter into the details of this long essay, I begin with a summary of the most important results it presents. The extraction of silver by the lixiviation-process from ores which have been subjected to a chloridizing-roasting, is based upon the fact that silver chloride is easily soluble in solutions of sodium or calcium hyposulphite, and that silver is precipitated from such solutions by an alkaline sulphide, with regeneration of the hyposulphite salts. In case the ore contains lead a large portion of the latter is and dissolved, lead sulphate being soluble in hyposulphite solutions. If, at the same time, copper is present, the sulphides precipitated from the solution, contain silver, copper, and lead, a combination of metals not desirable for subsequent treatment. Mr. E. H. Russell, of Park City, Utah, is the inventor and the patentee in the United States and several foreign countries of a new lixiviation-process, based upon the chemical facts discussed in this paper. Mr. Russell has discovered that lead can be completely separated from a sodium hyposulphite solution, as lead carbonate, by sodium carbonate or purified soda-ash, without precipitating any copper or silver. After decanting the solution from the lead carbonate, silver and copper are obtained from it in the usual way. This method of separating lead prohibits the use of calcium poly-sulphide as a precipitant for the sulphides, because any calcium entering the regenerated lixiviationsolution would also be precipitated as a carbonate with the lead by soda-ash. Hence, a sodium sulphide must be employed. A full investigation has demonstrated that this is by no means detrimental. Sodium sulphide and hyposulphite are more advantageously used in the lixiviation-process than the corresponding calcium-salts.
