LITHIA compounds have a place in pharmaceutical and other chemical industries and lithium minerals in glassmaking and ceramics. The metal, although rare, is used to a minor extent in alloys. During the nearly 50 years of production of lithium minerals in the United States, the silicate mineral spodumene has continued as the chief source of raw material for the manufacture of lithium salts. Although twice as much lepidolite, a lithium mica, has been mined, most of it has been used in the making of certain types of glass. Amblygonite has been an additional but minor source of lithium compounds. Triphylite, petalite, and zinnwaldite have also been utilized in the past. All of these commercial lithium minerals contain low percentages of lithium (Table 1). In 1938, a new raw material for manufacture of lithium compounds made its appearance. This product was crude dilithium sodium phosphate (Li2NaPO4), obtained as a by-product of manufacture of potash and soda chemicals from the brine of Searles Lake, California. Searles Lake, which is now dry, lies in the extreme northwest corner of San Bernardino County, California, and consists of a large mass of salts. It was estimated by the United States Geological Survey that the crystal body contained about 25 pct voids, which are filled with a saturated brine. The brine consists mainly of the sulphates, chlorides, carbonates, and borates of sodium and potassium. Several other acid radicals, including phosphates, are present. Lithium is present in the brine in an amount corresponding to 0.01 15 pct Li2O. In the course of evaporation of water from the brine, during the process of manufacture of sodium and potassium chemicals, dilithium sodium phosphate crystallizes out and is recovered by a flotation operation. The lithium concentrate is filtered and dried and is then ready for shipment. It analyzes from 19 to 21 pct Li2O and now constitutes the highest known grade of crude lithium material. It is and will continue to be a major source of lithium for manufacture of lithium products. For several hundred years the petroleum industry has flourished in Burma and at the close of the eighteenth century there were over five hundred producing wells in the Yenangyaung field. These were laboriously dug by hand and were exceedingly primitive, yet even today a small part of India's total production is obtained from hand-dug wells. The Indian Empire, the cradle of the oil industry, today produces but an unimpressive fraction of the world's supply of petroleum, not because the size of her contribution has diminished, but because it has remained more or less stationary while other countries have far outstripped her during the prodigious increase in the world's production of petroleum in recent years. Though for the past 10 years the total production in India has been remarkably constant, it has become increasingly difficult to maintain this output and at any rate from the older fields a slow decline may be anticipated unless new productive horizons are discovered. Production figures for the 10 years 192&1929 (the last year for which figures are available) are given by fields in Table 1. Crudes of Burma and Assam The bulk of India's production comes from the Yenangyaung and Singu fields, from which the crudes are very similar, the only important difference being that the oil from the Singu-Yenangyat structure contains a higher percentage of lighter fractions. The Burma crudes resemble that of the Panhandle of Texas and have a high content of solid paraffin, though strictly speaking the oil is of mixed base with a low content of asphaltum. With the exception of the negligible production from Sabe, the Burma crudes do not require dehydration; the sulfur content is very low and is innocuous. A small amount of naphthenic acids occurs in the kerosene and intermediate oil fractions while the lubricating fraction is practically free from acid. The ash content is low and the average A.P.I. gravity of mixtures of Yenangyaung and Singu oil is 36.4. Discussion of the paper of C. H. MATHEWSON and ARTHUR PHILLIPS, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1916, and printed in Bulletin No. 109, January, 1916, pp. 1 to 50. ZAY JEFFRIES, Cleveland, Ohio (communication to the Secretary*).¬The authors are to be congratulated for this interesting and valuable contribution. The paper as a whole shows very careful experimentation coupled with rare judgment in drawing conclusions. I have been working along similar lines for the last two years with other metals and alloys. In a short conversation with Dr. Mathewson about July 1, 1915, he mentioned the fact that different degrees of cold work greatly affect the temperature of recrystallization on annealing, Later I determined the recrystallization temperatures of iron, mild steel, and copper, with different degrees of cold work and found that the greater the degree of cold work, the lower the temperature of recrystallization on annealing. In the course of these experiments, I conceived practically the same ideas regarding the reasons for recrystallization as those advanced in the article under discussion. After a metal has been reduced by cold work to about one-fourth of its original area, the differences in orientation of different parts of a given grain can be seen plainly at a magnification of about 1,000 diameters. It is interesting to note that in Fig. A, Plate I, the lines of deformation are not parallel. For example,. in the large grain at the lower left corner of the micrograph, if the lines of deformation about 3g in. from the left edge are continued in a straight line, this line will intersect a straight line drawn as a continuation of the lines of deformation on the extreme right of the grain, at an angle of about 20°. Similarly, if the lines of deformation at the extremities of the large grain in the right central portion of the micrograph are extended, the lines intersect at an angle of about 35°. The individual lines of deformation are not straight. In some of these the parts of the broken lines intersect at angles as great as 15°.

In answer to inquiries from members, Mr. Sheafer said that the culm-banks of which his paper gave the shipments were of about the average quality of the banks in the Mahanoy region of the Schuylkill field,.made prior to 1881 or 1882, when the practice of preparing buckwheat coal was introduced; but that in a very old hank, made about 1849, no coal above pea-size had been found. Apparently it was then the practice to ship everything. In reply to an inquiry concerning the utilization of the fine coaldust, Mr. Sheafer said that it was not utilized in connection with the washing described in his paper, but was carried away in the water as waste; that during Mr. Corbin's presidency the Reading Company built at Mahanoy City an extensive plant for making artificial fuel, but difficulty was encountered, due to the circumstance that the small coal from different collieries varied in its combustible quality and also in the amount of pitch required to be mixed with it, and he believed they concluded that from some varieties of the coal-dust a very good fuel could be made, but at a cost entirely too great for successful competition with cheap coal. Of course, the anthracite dust was not so well suited to this manufacture as bituminous slack. R. W. Raymond, New York City : I believe that was the practical outcome of the enterprise of a member of the Institute, Mr. E. F. Loiseau, now deceased. It was found, I think, as an additional drawback, that the manufacture of artificial compressed fuel from anthracite dust could not be successfully practiced with material so impure as that of the culm-banks. Consequently, the manufacture could be based on that source of supply only when accompanied with a preparatory washing. The most favorable location for it would be at large yards where the waste from the handling of coal, which is comparatively pure material, could be thus treated. I believe the manufacture of compressed fuel from bituminous coal was at one time a profitable business in Nova Scotia, but was destroyed by the indirect effect of the general introduction of watergas for illuminating purposes. El Indio, eighty percent -owned by Compania Minera an Jose Inc., a subsidiary of St. Joe Minerals, and twenty percent-owned by private Chilean investors, will open their new flotation and Carbon -In -Pulp plant near La Serena, 480 km (300 miles) north of Santiago, Chile, in early 1981. The underground mine, at an altitude of 4,270 m (14,000 ft), will produce about 1,270 mt per day (1,400 st per day) of ore containing about 2. 2570 Cu, and gold and silver to the extent of 16 and 254 g per mt (0.47 and 7.4 oz per st) respectively. While construction of the plant was underway, development ore, containing some 1,400 kg (45,000 oz) of gold, was shipped to the United States for recovery in a copper smelter. At El Indio the underground ore is rail-hauled to the mill a short distance from the portal where it is crushed, ground, and floated to produce a copper concentrate containing both gold and silver. The crushing plant also crushes waste for use as mine backfill. Approximately 92% of the copper and 60% of the gold and silver are recovered in the flotation concentrate. Flotation tailings, at a grade of 19 g Au and 116 g Ag per mt (3.4 oz Au and 0.55 oz Ag per st), are cyanided for 72 hours in six Pachucas with auxiliary air lifts for pulp transfer. Lime, cyanide, lead nitrate, and a phosphate are also fed to the cyanidation Pachucas. After cyanidation, the pulp is treated in four air lift Carbon-In-Pulp tanks equipped with external vibrating screens for carbon advance. Loaded carbon is stripped in two pressure vessels in parallel. Pressure stripping must be used because of the high altitude. Stripped carbon is dewatered in a spiral classifier before being reactivated in a rotary kiln and returned to the C. I. P. circuit. Pregnant solution is then sent to four banks of four Zadra cells for gold and silver recovery on steel wool. Zadra cell cathodes.are washed with the slimes being captured in a plate and frame filter. The filter cake and the washed cathodes are then dried on an infrared dryer and smelted in two stages to bullion bars. Published reports indicate that the total investment for this unique operation was in the neighborhood of $80 million.

This paper presents a one-dimensional numerical method for calculating dissolved-gas-drive behavior for a single well or a linear reservoir. Pressure and saturation distributions can be calculated, including the effects of capillary and gravity forces. The analysis has been programmed for solution on the IBM 7090 digital computer. A comparison of experimental and calculated behavior for two linear models demonstrates that the method is suitable for calculating dissolved-gas-drive behavior under reservoir conditions of flow. Dissolved-gas-drive tests were run, at different production rates and with oils of different viscosities, on short (6.ft) and long (173ft) flow models. For tests approximating reservoir pressure gradients and flow rates, there was excellent agreement between experimental and calculated results. A series of calculations of well behavior for thin, horizontal, homogeneous, dissolved-gas-drive reservoirs shows that ultimate recovery is independent of production rate or well spacing in such cases. These calculations also show that Muskat's method and similar material-balance analyses are not applicable under some conditions particularly for high pressure drawdowns. INTRODUCTION The problem of calculating dissolved-gas-drive reservoir performance has received a great deal of attention throughout the oil-producing indusfry for many years. Really significant advances, however, have been made only in recent years. The rapid evolution of high-speed computing equipment and techniques has opened up new approaches to the problem and led to realistic, quantitative analyses free of many of the assumptions and limitations of earlier methods. The one-dimensional numerical method described in this paper includes the effects of both gravity and capillary forces. A number of test calculations, based on different rates, spacings, and rock and fluid properties, have shown that the method is adequate for systems that can be reasonably represented by a one-dimensional model (linear or radial) and in which fluid segregation perpendicular to the direction of flow is not important. Along with the development of mathematical methods, an experimental program was conducted and the data were used to test the validity of the theoretical basis of the mathematical method. Linear models were used and all experiments were run using 1,000-psig bubble-point oils. The use of long, high-pressure models enabled us to more closely approach reservoir gradients and flow rates. MATHEMATICAL FORMULATION DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS The differential equations describing dissolved-gas-drive behavior in one dimension dare summarized here. They include Darcy's law for flow of oil and gas (Eqs. 1 and 2) and the equations for conservation of mass for oil and gas (Eqs. 3 and 4). A joint meeting of the New York Section of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the American Institute of Electrical Engineers was held in the large auditorium of the Engineering Societies Building, 29 West 39th Street, on Friday evening, Apr. 4, 1913, and an exhibition of the Edison Talking Moving Pictures was presented before the Societies, together with exhibitions of the work which is being done by the Edison Co. in making moving pictures to illustrate lectures on natural science and the useful arts for school and college work. Introductory remarks were made by Mr. J. W. Lieb, Jr., and followed by an exhibition of moving pictures illustrating the formation of crystals, the operation of different types of pumps, magnetic forces, electro-magnetic separation of iron ore, the evolution of the fly, and many other most interesting studies. One of the films, entitled The Formation of Crystals, showed a moving picture of a boy, whose laboratory was the kitchen, dissolving salt in a test tube filled with hot water. The boy then poured the solution of hot salt into a watch glass and placed it under the microscope to watch the crystals form. This film was immediately followed by another showing what the boy saw through the microscope. The solution at first was free from crystals. Gradually the crystals commenced to form and increased very rapidly after once starting, shooting across the screen with lightning speed. The film illustrating the separation of iron ores by the Edison electro-magnet showed an ore bin with an electro-magnet set at one side and below the bin. As the ore was dropped from the bin the magnetite was drawn into the. electric field and deposited in a separate rile from the sand.

Ore microscopy has been applied to the complex cobalt-nickel- copper-lead-zinc ores from the Madison Mine in the Fredericktown subdistrict of the Southeast Missouri Lead District to predict potential beneficiation problems. It has been found that in some portions of the ore deposit, textures are present which may result in metal losses. In ores from the Bonneterre Transition Zone the intimate association of siegenite with chalcopyrite may result in cobalt and nickel losses to the copper concentrate and nickel contamination of the copper matte at the smelter. In ores from high stratigraphic horizons, this association is relatively uncommon, and siegenite is commonly associated with bravoite. This latter association will increase the the recovery of cobalt and nickel in the siegenite concentrate. However some cobalt and nickel will be lost to the tails as bravoite-pyrite particles due to the intimate intergrowth of these minerals. Other textures which may result in beneficiation problems include the intimate intergrowth of chalcopyrite and galena and the occurrence of sphalerite as inclusions in galena.

The distribution of cobalt and vanadium over non-equivalent crystallographic sites in C14-type Zr(VCo), alloys has been investigated. An anomalous X-ray scattering technique developed by Skolnick, Kondo. and lavine7 by which the separation in the scattering factors of two similar atoms can be enhanced was employed. Six alloys spanning the pseudobinary section ZrV1.6Co0.4-ZrVO.6CO1.4 at 10pct steps showed a nonrandom compositionally dependent distribution. Specifically, at high vanadium content cobalt preferentially occupied sites of type (6h) and vanadium, sites of type (2a; at low vanadium content the reverse was observed. In addition to the distribution fraction the structural parameters x and z were obtained. There was no significant deviation of these parameters from those obtained in the ideal C14 structure. Certain suggestions are made to account for the observed nonrandomness in the distribution of atoms on the two types of sites. INTERMETALLIC compounds of formula AB2 iso-morphous with MgCu2, MgZn2, and MgNi2 are known as Laves phases. Because Laves phases exhibit high symmetry and coordination numbers, the highest possible for an AB2-type compound,1 they are among the most frequently observed compounds in nature. In recent years interest has centered about the purely transition metal Laves phases2-' in efforts to understand the function of atomic size and electronic structure in the formation of these compounds. It has been observed that pseudobinary Laves phase systems often show a variation of structure across the phase diagram. Such a system is the ZrV2-ZrCo2 in which the structure varies from cubic MgCu2 to hexagonal MgZn2 to cubic MgCu2.4 Some understanding about the conditions under which the second modification is stable can perhaps be gained by studying the distribution of cobalt and vanadium atoms on lattice sites in the MgZn2 modification of the system ZrV2-ZrCo2. In both the MgZn2 and MgNi2-types there exist nonequivalent positions open to occupancy by the B element, whereas in the MgCu2 prototype all sites are equivalent. Skolnick, Kondo, and La-vine7 have developed an anomalous scattering technique suitable for this type of investigation. Whereas the influence of size on the formation of a Laves phase is well recognized, no substantial evidence has been put forth in support of the size ratio dependence of a particular prototype. Berry and Raynor8 suggested that RA /RB ratio does indeed affect the type of structure that is chosen, MgZn2 compounds tending to cluster about 1.225 while MgCu2 compounds were found at larger deviations from this ratio. Dwight,3 however, from a study of 164 Laves phases does not believe this generalization to be justified. Electronic effects are certain to play a part in the stability of Laves phases in general and in the choice of a structure type in particular. For example, size along would favor the formation of Laves compounds of Ti, Zr, Hf, Ta, or Nb as the A element with nickel or copper as the B element. The absence of such is attributed to an unfavorable electron : atom ratio by Elliott and rostoker.4 Early experiments of Laves and witte9 with pseudobinary and pseudoternary systems of the three prototypes established the dependence of crystal structure upon electron: atom ratios. They observed that the MgCu2 structure dissolved elements of higher valency until the electron: atom ratio of =1.8 was reached; the MgZn2 likewise dissolved elements of lower valency replacing zinc. witte,6 from calculations of the electron : atom volumes of Brillouin Zones, obtained limits of stability for the prototypes MgCu2 and MgZn2. Elliott and Rostoker4 used these limits with considerable success in the all-transition element Laves phases they investigated. According to witte,6 compounds between the electron :atom ratios of 1.80 and 2.32 were of the MgZn2 type; those above and below exhibited the MgCu2-type structure. On the basis of these limits and an assumed valency of zirconium based upon the near tetra-valence of titanium, Elliott and Rostoker obtained valencies for the first transition series elements. For the Laves phases with which this investigation is concerned, ZrV2 and ZrCo2, the authors calculated electron :atom ratios of 2.54 and 1.56, respectively. These ratios are for the MgCu2-type structure and straddle the stability band of the MgZn2 modification. One could, therefore, predict that a pseudobinary system ZrV2-ZrCo2 should pass through the MgZn2 modification in traversing the composition diagram from one end to the other. Implicit in this assumption is a smooth change of the electron: atom ratio from 2'54 to 1.56. MOSS10 states that his finding the low temperature structure of ZrCr2 to be C15 instead of C14 alters greatly Elliott's valency of zirconium and hence the assumed valencies of the other metals. The character of the Er-D system was established by determining pressure-temperature-composition relationships. A Sieuerts&apos; apparatus was employed to make measurements in the temperature range, 473" to 1223"K, the composition range of erbium to ErD3, and the pressure range of 10~s to 760 Torr. The system is characterized by three homogeneous phase regions: the nzetal-rich, the dideuteride, and the trideuteride phases. These phases and their solubility boundaries were deduced from the family of isotherms of the system zchich relate the pressure-temperature-composition variables. The equilibrium plateau decomposition relationships in the two-phase regions were determined from can&apos;t Hoff plots to be: The differential heats of reaction in these two regions are AH = - 53.0 * 0.2 and -20.0 *0.1 kcal per mole of D2, respecticely. The differential entropies of reaction are AS = - 36.3 * 0.2 and - 31.0 * 0.2 cal per mole D2. deg, respectively. Relative partial molal and intepal thermodynamic quantities were calculated from the pure metal to the dideuteride phase. The study of the Er-D system was undertaken as a logical complement to an earlier study of the Er-H system.&apos; The primary interest was to compare the characteristics of the two systems and relate the difference to the isotopic effect. Studies of rare earth-deuterium systems by other investigators have been very limited in number and scope. Furthermore, there is even less information available wherein an investigator has systematically compared a binary rare earth-hydrogen system with the corresponding rare earth-deuterium system. The available information consists primarily of dissociation pressure measurements in the plateau pressure region of a few rare earths. Warf and Korst&apos; determined dissociation pressure relationships for the La- and Ce-D systems in the plateau region and several isotherms for each system in the dideuteride region. They compared these data with those of the corresponding hydrided systems. The study of these systems as a whole was very cursory and did not give sufficient data for a thorough comparison of the effect of the hydrogen vs the deuterium in the respective rare earths. The heat capacities and related thermodynamic functions of the intermediate phases, YH, and YD2, were determined by Flotow, Osborne, and Otto,~ and the investigation was again repeated for YH3 and YD3 by Flotow, Osborne, Otto, and Abraham.4 This investigation studied only these specific phases. Jones, Southall, and Goodhead5 surveyed the hydrides and deu-terides of a series of rare earths for thermal stability including erbium. They experimentally determined isotherms of selected hydrides and plateau dissociation pressures for deuterides. These data allowed comparison of the enthalpy and entropies of formation of the dihydrides and dideuterides. To date, no one rare earth has been selected to thoroughly establish the complete pressure-temperature-composition (PTC) relationships of binary solute additions of hydrogen and deuterium, respectively. The objective in this investigation was to provide the first comparison of a complete family of isotherms of a rare earth-deuterium system with those of a rare earth-hydrogen system. This would allow one to determine what differences exist, if any, in the various phase boundaries and the thermodynamic relationships in various regions of the systems. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A Sieverts&apos; apparatus was employed to conduct the experimental measurements. Briefly, it consisted of a source of pure deuterium, a precision gas-measuring buret, a heated reaction chamber, a mercury manometer, and two McLeod gages (a CVC, GMl00A and a CVC, GM110). Pure deuterium was obtained by passing deuterium through a heated Pd-Ag thimble. A 100-ml precision gas buret graduated to 0.1-ml divisions was used to measure and admit deuterium to the reaction chamber. The reaction unit consisted of a quartz tube surrounded by a nichrome-wound furnace. The furnace temperature was controlled by a recorder-controller to . An independent measurement of the sample temperature in the quartz tube was made by means of a chromel-alumel thermocouple situated outside, but adjacent to, the quartz tube near the specimen. Pressure in the manometer range was measured to k0.5 Torr and in the McLeod range (10~4 to 10 Torr) to *3 pct. The deuterium compositions in erbium were calculated in terms of deuterium-to-erbium atomic ratio. These compositions were estimated to be *0.01 D/Er ratio. The erbium metal was obtained from the Lunex Co. in the form of sponge. The metal was nuclear grade with a purity of 99.9+ pct. The oxygen content was reported to be 340 ppm and the nitrogen not detectable. Metallographically the structure was almost free of second phase (<i vol pct). A quantity of sponge was arc-melted for use as charge material. The solid material was compared with the sponge in the PTC relationships. They were found to be identical. Therefore, sponge material was used henceforth, so that equilibrium could be attained more rapidly. The specimen size was about 0.2 gr for each loading of the reaction chamber. Used as a classifier in a plant expanding capacity or changing to closed-circuit operation, the liquid-solid cyclone offers the advantage of being adaptable to existing conditions. This paper presents the costs involved and experience gained from operating a unit of this kind. BY now application of the liquid-solid cyclone to various classification problems in the chemical and metallurgical fields is more or less familiar. A less publicized application receiving wider consideration as time goes on is its use as a classifier in closed-circuit grinding operations. This paper presents the costs involved and the experience gained from operating a unit of this kind. In May 1951 the Tennessee Copper Co. installed in its London mill at Copperhill, Tenn., a liquid-solid cyclone in closed circuit with a 6x12-ft ball mill. The circuit in which this cyclone is used is the regrind or secondary grinding circuit of a copper flotation plant. Originally it consisted of a 7x1-ft conical ball mill in closed circuit with a bowl classifier. Changes made in the primary grinding circuit of the mill necessitated a regrind circuit of greater capacity. The bulk concentrate to be ground was raised from 900 or 1000 tpd to 1200 or 1300 tpd, and to accommodate this increase a 6x12-ft ball mill which had been in the primary grinding circuit was moved into the regrind circuit. When this was done it was found that the classifier was too small to give efficient operation. Space in the plant was at a premium, and since use of the cyclone offered considerable economy the installation shown in Figs. 1-3 was made. The unit installed is a 24-in. diam cyclone classifier with a 20" cone angle. Diameter of the vortex finder is 8 in., the feed entrance area 20 sq. in. Maximum diameter of the adjustable apex valve is 6 in. and minimum diameter approximately 3.5 in. To refer again to Figs. 1 and 2, the cyclone* is mounted motor. It is charged with 18 tons of 1-in. balls. The overflow, or fines, passes by gravity directly to the copper flotation plant. The ball mill discharge and the new feed combine in a sump from which they are sent to the cone by an 8x6 SRL pump at a rate of 497 gpm. Pressure at the cyclone is 5 psi. For reasons dictated by the nature of the ore treated, particularly the bonding of fine grains of chalcopyrite to pyrrhotite, the froth from the second cell of the copper rougher circuit is returned to the regrind mill. This flow, which somewhat complicates the standard closed-circuit calculation, is seen in Fig. 1 to be 156 tpd of solids. This combines with the cyclone classifier underflow to constitute the ball mill feed. The requirement of the regrind product is that it be 77 to 80 pct —200 mesh. The liquid-solids cyclone operating in conjunction with the 6x12-ft mill adequately met this requirement. Of primary importance is the fact that this arrangement provided sufficient classification capacity to replace the undersized classifier and was capable of building up a circulating load to 87 pct, large enough to give an efficient grind. The character of the Wisconsin orebodies must be clearly understood to appreciate the difficulties encountered in sampling and estimating them. Unlike the western vein deposits, they do not lie between regular walls, but form large, often highly irregular bodies, on a single floor in the so-called Galena limestone. The bottom of the ore is nearly always on the clay bed (a flat generally well-defined clay seam a few inches thick) which marks the junction of the base of the Galena lime and the top of the next formation, the Trenton lime. Above the clay bed, the orebodies make the unique pitch and flat formation described by Chamberlin.&apos; Theoretically, we should find two pitches, one on either side of the top crevice, diverging as they go down, with the final flats a considerable distance apart on the clay bed. The area between, known locally as core ground, should thus constitute a single defined orebody, with the richer portions near the pitches and the leaner portion in the center of the core. Practically, we find few examples of this perfect orebody. Almost invariably one pitch is better defined than the other, and often the opposite pitch is marked only by a faint line of fracture showing stronger mineralization than the wall rock, or it may be totally lacking. But with an orebody of any size or richness, at least one strong pitch usually tends to follow an east-west trend, or a quartering course. Late mining developments in the rich New Diggings field indicate that these pitches often assume a horseshoe or crescent shape, the richer ore being in the heart of the crescent and the pitches showing less mineralization as they extend outwards. In the northern end of the field, on the contrary, the pitches maintain generally a consistent direction, and have been mined for thousands of feet from the shaft. The length of the orebody may be several thousand feet, the height varying from 10 to 60 ft. and the width from 60 to 250 ft. In fact, on the core side, there is no definite end to the ore. The mineralization simply gets thinner and thinner, and the limit of working depends on the cost sheet and the profit from the recovery.

By means of a finite difference expansion a fluid flow field in cylindrical coordinates with axial symmetry, is simulated by a network of electrical resistors. A series of DC analog computing units, connected to the network bounrlary corresponding to the free surface effectively adjust the network parameterr to satisfy simultaneously Laplace&apos;s equation and the borrndary conditions. The system automatica1ly "re1axes" to the correct boundary shape in a fraction of a second. A detailed application of the method to the water coning problem in oil wells is presented. INTRODUCTION The water coning problem in petroleum production is a prime example of a class of problems known as free surface problems. A free surface arises in fluid flow regions when the shape of the boundary of a single phase flow region is affected in some manner by the pressure or potential gradients within the region. When there exists an interface of two fluids of different densities, the shape of this interface will be determined by the relative velocities of the two fluids and will therefore comprise a free surface. Other free surface problems of interest to petroleum engineers include the gas coning, water injection, and gravity drainage probIcms. In each case it is desired to predict the shape of the boundary of the oil zone as a function of the flow rate, the well penetration and the physical parameters and dimensions of the system. Such problems do not lend themselves to the classical analytical treatments of boundary value problems because in this case the boundary of the potential field and the potential distribution within the field are interdependent and must be calculated simultaneously. A further difficulty arises from geometric considerations. Since the fluid flow is of the radial type in most cases, such effective methods as conformal transformation and the hodograph are not applicable. It is the purpose of this paper to present a method whereby free surface problems of this type may be solved rapidly to the desired order of accuracy by means of a combination of a network of electrical resistors and conventional analog computer units. The water coning problem is treated in some detail. Then the procedure for extending the technique to other free surface problems is indicated. FORMULATION Most commercial oil reservoirs consist of an oil-saturated sand, bounded above by an impermeable strata and below by a water-saturated sand. Gravimetric separation results in a horizontal oil-water interface. When an oil well is drilled so that it partially penetrates the oil zone, and production is initiated at a constant rate, the oil-water interface will assume a new shape as a result of the pressure gradients in the oil zone. It should be emphasized that this is a steady phenomenon. After an initial transient period the water phase will be completely static and only the oil will be in motion. The new steady-state shape of the interface, as shown in Fig. 1, depends upon the depth of penetration, d, the thickness of the oil zone, I, the production rate, q, the hydraulic permeability zone of the sand, k, the viscosity of the oil, µ, and the densities of the oil and water, p.,. and pw.. Application of shrinkage stoping methods, without filling, in the mining of large silver-gold orebodies in the Mogollon district, where the ore is hard and wall rocks stand well without timbering and where veins make little water. Vertical and inclined shafts in use with both surface and underground hoisting stations. Storage pockets used on main hoisting levels, with electric signals and telephones for communication. Power is generated by De La Vergne engines having a total sea-level rating of 1540 hp. On account of the remote location of the camp, transportation is an important item of expense, amounting in 1922 to $0.641 per ton of ore milled or $0.265 per ton-mile on all freight hauled. THE Mogollon mining district is in the southwestern part of New Mexico near the southern end of the Mogollon range, from which the district takes its name. The town of Mogollon is but 37 1/2 mi. in an air line northeast of Clifton, Ariz. The air-line distance from Silver City is 52 1/2 mi. and from Tyrone, 57 mi. Supplies are transported by motor truck from Silver City. The distance by road is 75 mi., half of which is an improved highway of modern construction. Transportation has always - been a large item of expense in carrying on operations in the district. Valuable ore is said to have been discovered in the Mogollon Mountains as early as 1870 but the first regular prospecting was carried on in 1875, by James C. Cooney, a sergeant from Fort Bayard. His discovery of rich silver-copper ores in the region of Mineral Creek led to the establishment of the Camp of Cooney. Remote from any settlements where there was a semblance of law and order, and harassed by the Apaches, development was slow and nearly 10 years elapsed before the village of Mogollon was established on Silver Creek. Prospecting in this section of the district had disclosed the outcrops of several promising veins containing silver-gold ores. Among the early claims located were the Last Chance, Top and Confidence, on what has proved to be the most productive vein in the district.

The design and performance of many operations common to the petroleum industry depend upon the unique properties of a class of materials known as non-Newtonian fluids. The art of measuring and describing these properties, called rheology, has fallen far behind the field applica-tion of these fluids in this industry. Empirical methods are still employed although theoretically sound methods of analysis are now available. This paper illustrates a completely general method of analysis of the rheological properties of non-Newtonian fluids which id independent of the type of viscometer employed and also the rheological type of fluid encountered except those of a thixo-tropic or rheopectic nature. Values of the rheological properties of a fluid obtained using this method of analysis are based upon an absolute scale of measurement, eliminating the necessity of employ-jng arbitrary concepts of the flow properties of non-Newtonian fluids, The fundamental nature of this method of analysis is further demonstrated by evaluating the precision with which measurements have been made of these rheological properties by employing a dimensionless criteric: —the Fanning friction factor-Reynolds number correlation. INTRODUCTION Non-Newtonian fluids are not new in the petroleum industry. Particular properties of non-Newtonian materials have been recognized and used to advantage in drilling fluids and have found excellent application in the hydraulic fracturing process.&apos;.&apos; While usage of these fluids is not new in this industry, the art of measuring and describing their rheological properties is still in its infancy. This is reflected in the accepted method of evaluating drilling fluids, API RP 29, (1950), which recommends a one point "viscosity" measurement. These shortcomings are recognized by various groups in the industry and more adequate methods have been prposed.3,4 The efforts Of these people are to be commended; but, at the same time, the limitations of their method of analysis and viscometer must be appreciated. This method Of analysis is applicable Only to Bingham plastic fluids as is pointed out early in their articles. The consistency of a Bingham plastic fluid must also lie within the range of the viscometer which is also well defined by the author. It is believed that the apparent simplicity of this method of analysis and the utility Of Operation Of their viscometer will soon make the terms non-Newtonian fluid and Bingham plastic fluid synonymous as used in this industry; a tendency which has already been encountered. Application of this method of analysis to a non-Newtonian fluid other than a Bingham plastic can lead to erroneous results. The field of rheology has long been hampered by the adherence to arbitrary concepts of Of of the flow properties Of non-Newtonian fluids. This has resulted in the design and operation of viscometers so as to fulfill these concepts rather than following the more logical method of analyzing experimental data so as to yield a fundamental truth. completely Bingham proposed the concept Of plastic flow and yield asu rement. data presented by Buckingham could hardly be interpreted so as to substantiate this theory; but rather succeeded in establishing the fact that compliance with this flow concept could never be realized in the capillary tube vis-cometer.5 Bingham, in reply, sug-gested "Rather than complicate our formula, it would seem to me a much better plan to so change the conditions of flow that the formula will be linear... Reiner0 stated .This plan has been followed by me in collaboration with Miss Riwlin. . . . From the present paper (Reiner and Riwlin, 1929) it will be seen that it is possible to choose the conditions of flow so that the formula based on Bingham&apos;s law of plastic flow remains linear. Graton, Cambridge, Mass.—The subject of chalcocite occur; rence and its geological significance has, of course, a very important commercial bearing, as shown by the recent remark of a hard-headed mining .man: "This secondary enrichment business is one thing you geologists have put up which we can hang on to, and come out right." Most enrichments of copper ores depend upon the formation Of chalcocite from leaner sulphides. Recently it has been shown that not only does there exist this secondary or derived chalcocite, * but that in certain ores the mineral is present as an initial or original constituent, which therefore we may call primary. The desirability of distinguishing between these two kinds of chalcocite is evident and has recently been emphasized. That constitutes the first problem in this connection. I believe many who are working upon secondary enrichment of mineral deposits are giving much attention to that particular question. It is now possible to distinguish primary from secondary chalcocite in many cases. In such cases, what do we know of the&apos; conditions under which this secondary or derived chalcocite was formed? , This is the second main question in connection with the subject. It is now plain, at least in many instances, that the formation of this derived chalcocite represents a phase of oxidation if we have in mind the primary ore as the thing acted upon. The next important question—and it is most important—is: does such oxidation go on above the zone where the rocks are saturated with water—that is, above the water level—or below, or indiscriminately above and below? Many of you have, or have had, opportunities to study at first hand, day after day, occurrences that&apos; enable valuable conclusions to be drawn upon these and other important questions concerning the formation and significance of chalcocite. It is greatly to be hoped that your testimony will be made available and undoubtedly it will go far toward clearing up some of these doubtful points. John D. A method is presented for predicting pressure drop for two-phase fluid flow in horizontal pipes. A set of 267 experimental measurements randomly sampled from approximately 1,000 measurements from various literature sources was used. Pressure gradients calculated by the procedure developed and compared with the experimental values showed a bias of +0.82 per cent and a standard deviation of 20.8 per cent. The advantatges of this method over other available methods of predicting two-phase flow pressure drop are (a) its comparative simplicity of application, (b) its relative independence of flow patterns, (c) its accuracy, which on the basis of a statistical evaluation predicts pressure drop closer than other available methods, and, (d) its ability to satisfactorily correlate laboratory data from various sources while the correlations from these sources do not appear to agree with one another. The method has been reduced to a simplified graphical procedure, suitable for field use. A two-phase f factor is defined and correlated with parameters involving the flowing gas-liquid mass ratio, a Reynolds number for the gas phase, and a Reynolds number for the liquid phase. The choice of parameters allows the correlation to reduce to the usual f factor plot for the limiting conditions of (111 gas or all liquid. INTRODUCTION The mechanics and characteristics of two-phase flow systems have been of interest throughout the industry for some time. In numerous engineering installations such as pipe lines, chemical reactors, and heat exchangers, two-phase flow conditions are of every day occurrence. In oil production operations it has been desirable, in some cases, to consider transporting gas and oil together in a common pipe from oil field to process plant. The trend toward centrally located stock tank batteries in oil fields has resulted in longer gathering pipelines in which more than one fluid phase is flowing. The increase in the producing capacity of oil wells due to new production tech- niques has created the need for review and re-design of many surface gathering lines for properly handling the increased production. Optimum pipe size for the situations described above has become an important factor. The problem which is of interest here involves the ability to predict the relationship between pressure drop, fluid properties, fluid rates, pipe diameter, and pipe length. Although the literature1,5,10,13,18,19 contains various articles dealing with specific cases of the problem, Lock-hart and Martinelli17 proposed the most general solution. Their method has been later modified by Baker:1 Alves2 demonstrated that different flow patterns are possible for a flow mechanism defined by Martinelli such as gas turbulent, liquid turbulent. Baker explained deviations experienced with Martinelli&apos;s correlations on the basis that different flow patterns could exist for the same flow mechanism. Using Martinelli&apos;s method of correlatioil, Baker correlated data for each flow pattern for the turbulent-turbulent flow mechanism. WITH the papers of Palmer and Smith1 and of Burghoff and Bohlen,2 published in 1942, understanding of the problem of the development of ears on deep-drawn brass cups was brought to the point where, from a practical standpoint, producers of brass sheet could keep earing under control. However, these very practical results raised questions concerning the reasons for the observed behavior. Since plastic deformation is fundamentally a function of crystallographic slip, these reasons must be considered in the light of the textures to be found in the annealed sheet. Various attempts have been made to interpret the mechanism of ear formation by correlation with the preferred orientation and the anisotropy of the sheet. However, none of these has satisfactorily explained why ears are usually found in the rolling and transverse directions for copper but at 45° to these directions for brass. This paper offers additional data on these two related subjects and has been divided into two sections. The first section provides a survey of the recrystallization textures of brass as affected by annealing temperatures and prior reductions, and an account of the earing behavior which accompanies these textures. The second section reports new data on the anisotropy that accompanies a characteristic texture for brass and endeavors with partial success to establish the factors that account for the difference in earing behavior between copper and brass. EARING BEHAVIOR OF BRASS Review of Textures The recrystallization texture of severely rolled brass was first reported by Bass and Glocker.3 The preferred orientation to which this texture, obtained from metal annealed at 500°C., was most akin was (113)[112]. This texture has been confirmed by Bauer, von Göler and Sachs;4 Brick;* Brick, Martin and Angier;6 and Cook and Richards7 who, in general, used annealing temperatures under 500°C. Bass and Glocker3 also reported the recrystallization texture at 850°C. to be the same as at 500°C. They analyzed their textures by means of single photograms obtained with white radiation. The photograms for both temperatures are reproduced in their paper, and there is a strong similarity between the two. However, for the latter temperature, the number of spots registered on the film was remarkably large for the grain size to be expected, and the authors made no mention of using a technique that would integrate a large enough area of the specimen to produce so many spots. A sumMary of the consumption of coal in 1945 shows that the coke industry ac-counted for 17 pct of the total coal used. No substitute for coke and the blast furnace in the reduction of iron ore has gained sufficient prominence so far to be given serious consideration. However, while the same slot-type ovens are being built and used now as were in use a few years ago, the problem of obtaining suitable coking coals, both high- and low-volatile, has forced many operators to revamp coal-blending facilities. Until the beginning of World War 11, high-temperature ooke plants were able to secure the required high-volatile and low-volatile coals from two or three seams and from three or four mines. Thus, many of our coke oven plants were able to operate with storage bins for two coals only. The vari-pnce in raw materials was not great, and uniformity of blend was a relatively simple problem. Since the beginning of World War 11, many and important changes have taken place. Demand for all coals increased greatly. Production, though kept as near maximum capacity as possible, could not meet the demands for coal generally, and particularly for the various kinds of coal which have proved to be satisfactory for specialized uses; coals were allocated as nearly as possible in the order of greatest need; storage piling was reduced to the minimum necessary to keep plants in operation; uniformity of quality could not be maintained, and with this last, uniformity of composition of blends for coking could not be maintained. Whereas before the war producers of metallurgical coke could fill their needs from three or four mines, by the end of the war it was not unusual to find shipments to a single coke oven plant coming from as many as 30 different mines, in a single month. Since many of the mines producing both high- and low-volatile coal for high-grade metallurgical coke are rapidly nearing de-pletion, the problem of seeking new sources and of blending a number of coals in each plant for the production of high-temperature coke is facing practically every producer in the United States at the present time, and is one which will probably continue for many years to come. Midwestern byproduct coke ovens in the Chicago and St. Louis areas use annually from 12 to 15 million tons of bituminous coals which are transported 500 to 700 miles from the Appalachian coal fields of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and eastern Kentucky. Approximately two-thirds of this coal is high-volatile bituminous. The critical transportation problem confronting the nation in 1943, and the growing scarcity of the best Appalachian coking coals, prompted the Illinois Geological Survey to propose a research program in which would be studied the coking properties of blends of low-sulphur, high-volatile Illinois coal with the high- and low-volatile coals from the eastern fields.
