The separating performance of a pilot dry beneficiation system using a gas-solid fluidized bed was investigated with coal from South Africa. The coal used for the study has a low inherent moisture content, a moderate ash content, a moderate volatile content, a low sulphur content and a high calorific value. Its washability is moderate. Experimental results show that the separating quality of the fluidized bed drops gradually as the feed-coal particle size decreases. The probable error, E, values for 50?25mm, 25?13 mm and 13?6 mm coals were 0.04 g/cm3, 0.06 g/cm3 and 0.09 g/cm3, respectively. The cause of the differences in separating characteristics was analysed by particle dynamics and numerical modelling. Furthermore, the pilot fluidized bed was employed to separate 50-6mm coal. In this experiment the coal ash content was reduced from 23.74% to 11.79%, with a probable error, E, value of 0.07 g/cm3and a recovery efficiency of 98.26%. This indicates that the fluidized bed is applicable to the separation of coal from South Africa and has good separating performance and wide applicability. The coastal dune cordon of northern KwaZulu-Natal is among the highest in the world reaching heights in excess of 180 m and up to 2 km in width. It comprises a complex system of Quaternary stacked dunes of various geomorphologies, types and ages (Sudan, 1999; Maud and Botha, 2002;Ware et al., 2001; Ware, 2003). The dunes contain economic heavy minerals that have been exploited for the last two and a half decades. Dune units have recently been defined based on sand composition and texture(Sudan, 1999; Ware, 2003). Despite this, little work has been undertaken on the clay-fraction (< 2 um). This work documents the weathering of dunes to form clays. From the documented clay assemblages and relative abundances, a simplified weathering sequence with increasing maturity can be summarized as follows: primary minerals ? illite + vermiculite ?illite +interstratifications ?illite + montmorillonite ?halloysite + interstratifications + kaolinite ?kaolinite. The dominant controlling factors in determining clay assemblages is pH and leaching conditions. The presence of carbonates results in an alkaline pH and high concentrations of Ca2+and Mg2+which favours the formation of montmorillonite and vermiculite. However, vermiculite tends to form under slightly acidic conditions and is indicative of palaeosols where organic acids produce localized acidic pH’s. In contrast to this, kaolinite will only form and concentrate when carbonates have been leached. Kaolinite dominated samples are considered very mature under current climatic conditions(Chamley, 1989). Halloysite represents a transitional phase between montmorillonite and kaolinite (Herbillon et al., 1981). Ion mobility and evacuation is also critical in determining clay assemblages. Past work and field studies indicate that the dune cordon acts as an open system, resulting in carbonates and mobile ions being readily leached and lost from the system. However, when prolonged weathering has caused an accumulation of fine-grained material, the permeability decreases substantially whereby mobile cations and silica cannot be readily evacuated. This results in the formation of montmorillonite rather than kaolinite, even when carbonates have been leached. Illite (sericite) is considered to alter directly from feldspars. However, dune stacking and geometries, vegetation, water fluxes, reworking and erosion complicates this sequence.

The separation performance of a raw coal sample from South Africa based on the dense gas-solid fluidized bed beneficiation technique was investigated. Analysis showed that the raw coal sample distributes mainly in the -50+6 mm size range with the -1.6 g/cm3 density fraction accounting for 78.20% of the cumulative mass distribution. A flow sheet of the sequential coal beneficiation technique was introduced. The experimental and simulation results of the hydromechanical and density distribution stability indicate that the dense gas-solid fluidized bed could provide a stable separation environment with uniform density fluctuations under suitable operating conditions. With the application of this technique on the raw coal sample, the separation results show that three products, consisting of 73.25% clean coal with an ash content of 9.59%, 11.31% middlings, and 15.44% gangue were effectively separated at two different densities of 1.82 g/cm3 and 1.57 g/cm3. This study provides an effective flow sheet for achieving the high-efficiency separation performance on raw coal from arid areas. ABSTRACT: New techniques and methods for 3D geo-mechanical model test are presented in this paper. The new model material NIOS with high density and low cost; the so-called DPSS (Discrete Principal Stress Surface) loading concept, the loading and monitoring system for the generation of the 3D initial stress field of the model test, also the special techniques and apparatuses for modelling the excavation of caverns located deep inside the model material, are developed and introduced. By adopting those new techniques, a very large 3D geo-mechanical model test with high comparability for a newly designed underground powerhouse has been successfully fulfilled. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Neue Techniken und Methoden für 3D geomechanischen Modellversuch wurden in diesem Artikel vorgestellt. Ein neues Modellmaterial mit hocher Dichte und niedrigem Preis, ein sogenanntes DPSS (Discrete principal stress surface) Ladenkonzept, ein Laden- und Überwachungssystem für die Erzeugung des 3D primären Spannungsfelds und überdies spezielle Techniken und Maschinen für das Ausbruch der tief in dem Versuchsmodell liegenden Kaverne wurden entwickelt. Bei Anwendungen dieser neuen entwickelten Techniken wurde ein sehr großer 3D Modellversuch mit großem Maßstab für ein geplantes unterirdisches Kraftwerk erfolgreich durchgeführt. The knowledge of the final location of a drillhole is critical in obtaining the expected blasting results. This paper proposes a new methodology to control the drilling accuracy in open-pit mines using aerial images and machine learning. Specifically, it investigates how support vector machines (SVM) and convolutional neural networks (CNN) are useful for automatically detecting blastholes over drone images captured in blasting patterns. Several datasets were obtained from different mines in Nevada (USA) and were used to train and test models. We then processed those images to create orthomosaic and digital elevation representations of the patterns. Thousands of patches were then extracted and augmented to develop SVM and CNN models. The results demonstrate that machine learning is useful for drillhole detection and, in this way, to control the drilling accuracy and use the explosive energy more efficiently.

Steel is the most versatile material which has made the progress in every aspect on this earth possible. There are hundreds of varieties of steel because for each application it has to be made with specific properties to get the most optimum usage. It is well known that the basic constituent of steel is iron. But it is the proportion of other elements in it, which give each type of steel certain specific properties. These elements are added in liquid iron inform of Ferro alloys to get the desired composition and properties. Thus, Ferro alloys are important additives in the production of steel. It can be said that no steel can be made without use of one or more of the several Ferro alloys. They form the backbone of steel. Thus, the Ferro alloys industry is vitally linked for its growth and development to that of the steel industry. Ferro alloys industry in India has never been globally competitive, despite its rich ore deposits and low-cost manpower, essentially due to a) Insufficient availability and high cost of electric power b) Increasing ores and reductants cost c) Non-availability of low ash, low phos. coking coal in the country for the production of desired coke with low ash, and low phos. contents, making import of such coke at a high cost imperative d) High-cost and insufficient infrastructural facilities (both road and rail) for rapid transportation of ore from mines to plants e)Stiff competition from producers and exporters of Ferro alloys in other countries like South Africa, Kazakhstan, China, Russia, Australia etc. due to global trade agreement which has made drastic reduction in customs duty on imports necessary. f) Wide fluctuations in the International price of Ferro alloys depending on demand versus supply. To over come these challenges plus adhering to stringent pollution control norms innovations are inevitable in the process technology, and plant equipment design, along with frequent changes in product mix, to be more cost-effective. An attempt is made in this paper to address the innovations that took place in the past and those that further need to be made, considering the future of this industry.

One of the challenging problems for optimization in mining operations is to choose the best equipment among the alternatives. Equipment selection is an important task for mine management due to its operational cost, and is also an integral part of mine planning and design. Equipment selection is not a well-defined process because it involves the interaction of several subjective factors or criteria. Besides, decisions are often complicated and may even embody contradictions. Therefore, equipment selection is considered as a multi-criteria decision-making process, and suitable decision-making methods should be employed in this process. In this study, the loader selection for Aegean Lignite Colliery was made by using both the analytic hierarchy process and Yager’s method. Owing to the misusage of Yager’s method in the past, a new procedure is proposed in this paper for making proper decisions. It is highly recommended in this purposed method that criteria or alternatives should be grouped so as not to exceed the limitations of human performance (nine criteria/alternatives). The most appropriate solution for the loader selection was investigated by obeying this limitation for each method, and the results were compared. At the end of the decision-making process, a sensitivity analysis was applied for each method in order to see how a criterion affects the final decision. The advantages and disadvantages encountered during the application of each decision-making method are presented.

Non-transfer-arc linear plasma systems are highly suited to manufacturing nanoparticles. In this paper, the manufacturing of such particles with specially designed plasma systems is discussed. In general, it entails the volatilization of a metal halide that is injected in the high-temperature region of a plasma flame, where it is reacted with a suitable reagent, for example O2, to produce nanooxide powders. Metal powders can also be introduced directly in the plasma. Due to the very short residence time of only milliseconds in the reaction zone, as well as the fact that the reaction takes place in the gas phase, combined with very rapid quenching in the order of 10 000°C.s-1, nanoparticles are produced. At Necsa the manufacturing of such particles has been demonstrated on various scales. A pilot plant for the production of nano-Al2O3, and two pilot plants, one using SiCl4 and the other one using SiF4 as feed material, were built to produce fumed, pyrogenic, nano-SiO2. The alumina plant had a production rate of 8?10 kg.h-1 and the silica plants had production rates of 2 and 10 kg.h-1 respectively. Perfectly spherical alumina particles with a particle size distribution of between 10 and 200 nm were produced on a continuous system. Particle size analysis for the silica by SEM measurements showed a d50 of 60 nm and a particle size distribution of 30?100 nm. The specific surface area was in the range of 170m2.g-1. Other samples of plasma produced nanoparticles such ZnO and B4C will also be presented.

Penetration and dissolution mechanisms are reviewed for predominantly single-phase oxide, two phase oxide and oxide-carbon composite refractories by liquid silicate slags. Theoretical models of these processes, as well as static (sessile drop, dipping and crucible) and dynamic (rotating finger and rotary slag) experimental tests, along with their practical limitations are considered. Direct (congruent or homogeneous) attack is controlled by the reaction rate at the slag-refractory interface or the rate of diffusive transport of species to it through the slag leading to active corrosion. Indirect (incongruent or heterogeneous) attack is controlled by diffusive transport through the slag or through a new solid phase, which forms at the original slag-refractory interface. This may lead to passive corrosion. Examples of direct and indirect attack in a range of refractory/slag systems are described highlighting the critical influence of the composition and hence viscosity of the local liquid slag adjacent the solid refractory. Penetration and corrosion can be controlled either through the local slag composition via the refractory or the bulk slag or by microstructural control of the refractory by e.g. internal generation of dense layers or external deposition/generation of passive coatings, so-called in situ refractories.

The reaction between carbon and slags is of significant importance in direct smelting of iron ores, EAF slag foaming and copper slag cleaning processes. This reaction is known to occur via gaseous intermediates and it is important to have fundamental data to understand the relative importance of each reaction step. In this study, the rate of CO2dissociation on different slag surfaces is measured using an isotope exchange technique. It was found that increasing iron oxide content up to 30 wt per cent does not have a significant effect on the rate constant while increasing from this limit, increases the rate constant dramatically. Activation energy of CO2dissociation on slags of unit basicity and different iron oxide contents is in the range of 180±40 kJ/mol. It is found that rate constant dependence on oxygen potential in the slag phase is increasing with iron oxide concentration. In the case of copper making slags, the influence of copper oxide is found to increase the magnitude of apparent rate constant, while decreasing the activation energy considerably. Computer Integrated Mining (CIMG) is a process of using computer networks to transform islands of enabling technologies into a highly interconnected mining system. CIMG involves the integration of advanced technologies at various levels in the mine business to achieve higher flexibility, better quality of processes and control, and improved profitability. Justifying the benefits of CIMG are difficult as many of the advantages are derived from improved flexibility, quality, and control. Justification is based on the evaluation of the benefits to be gained, compared to the required capital investment. Management tools used in mining are currently inadequate in assessing the value of advanced technology whose benefits are primarily qualitative. A key aspect of successful implementation is management acceptance, which has to be won through the capability to justify the technology&apos;s financial costs and the true value of all of its benefits. The manufacturing industry faced similar justification difficulties when adopting advanced technology in factories. A significant amount of funding and research was invested into developing management strategies and approaches to justification. Many of the problems that faced the transformation of the manufacturing industry in the late eighties and early nineties are now facing mining. The solutions derived for manufacturing may help mining in its transition to an increased reliance on integration technology. Reviewing the industrial history of computer integrated manufacturing identifies several tools and strategic frameworks that can be adapted for mining. (Extractive Metallurgy)degree The concepts behind support vector machines are very interesting both in theory and in practice, as they are based on a universal constructive learning procedure derived from the statistical learning theory developed by Vapnik. In this paper, their application to time series modelling is considered by means of simulated data from an autocatalytic reactor. In particular, reconstruction methods from non-linear dynamics are used to define a state space model for the process. An experimental rig has been constructed to produce chloride stress corrosion cracks in Type 304L stainless steel tube samples. The samples are to be used to test possible in situ repair methods in future work. The factor which influences the time to failure most strongly is the sample temperature; the distribution of cracks within the sample is affected by local temperature variations and by the position of the water line. Low-frequency oscillations in stress, caused by the on-off temperature controller, did not appear to influence cracking in these tests.

Background Three changes to the Constitution were proposed by the Council on 21 July 2006. These changes now have to be approved by means of a ballot at a Special General Meeting. The Northern Cape Province in South Africa has high levels of annual direct normal solar irradiance and reserves of zinc (Zn) ores. The question arises as to the benefits of integrating renewable solar energy into the beneficiation routes of these reserves. The paper evaluates a novel flowsheet for the production and beneficiation of Zn in this region, maximising localised solar energy as a source for both electricity and process heat. Solar variability is discussed and the cost and benefits of thermal storage in the flowsheets are evaluated by its influence on the levelised costs of electricity and process energy over the project life-time at a possible implementation site. The results of the developed scoping model showed that solar photovoltaic integration to provide electricity for electrowinning without battery storage can lead to more than 10% cost saving on electricity over the lifetime of the project. Additional savings potential was identified when battery storage was included to enable the solar PV system to supply electricity during peak tariff periods. The solar thermal case showed the most promise with savings of 70% on heating costs for casting, while solar PV electricity without storage resulted in a 16% cost saving on heating for casting over the lifetime of the project. Solar PV electricity generation resulted in the avoidance of more than 20% of CO2 emissions from grid electricity use. Solar thermal heating can avoid up to 80% of the CO2 emissions associated with grid electricity use for remelting of Zn cathodes for casting. "Gold bearing deposits of the Witwatersrand basin are generally less than 2m thick and require conventional narrow-reef mining methods for extraction and employ explosives as a means of rock breaking. Optimal utilization of explosives is dependent on the overall design of the blast. The under-utilization of explosives arises when shot-holes are drilled inconsistently, overcharged, and when tamping is absent. This can be rectified by emphasizing the importance of good drilling practices as part of induction programmes and refresher courses. The project was aimed at determining whether or not explosives are being optimally utilized at project site. This was investigated through a study of the properties of explosives, mine standards, and recommendations for usage. Underground observations were made to determine whether or not mine standards were being adhered to. Historic data was obtained to establish the historic relationship existing between the quantity of explosives used (kg) and the production output (m2). This was then compared to the quantity of explosives the mine expects to use per unit of production. The results obtained were analysed to determine the presence and extent of over- or under-utilization. It was found that explosives are being under-utilized at the mine. More explosives are ordered than expected per unit of production. The explosives’ properties are not thoroughly exploited during blasting, thereby requiring the use of more explosives than prescribed. Namakwa Sands aims to conserve environmental resources and prevent or minimize environmental impacts from its operations. The challenge faced by Namakwa Sands is the rehabilitation of the arid winter rainfall Strandveld and lowland Succulent Karoo vegetation zones affected by its mining activities. Extensive experimentation with different rehabilitation methods resulted in the development of an effective rehabilitation programme. The use of topsoil as a seed bank and shade-cloth as windbreaks have significantly aided the rehabilitation process. The aim of the programme is to stabilize the soil environment so as to allow the germination and development of the local plant species. The ability to control wind erosion is critical to the success of the rehabilitation effort. A programme of biodiversity audits has been started to measure the recovery of plant species in the rehabilitated area. The principle of continuous improvement, coupled to site-specific rehabilitation studies, is applied to enhance the rehabilitation programme.

The principal goal of the research described in the paper was to determine, by measurement of pillar scaling on pillars that have not failed, whether the pillar life prediction method developed by van der Merwe (2003) was valid as it stood or whether adjustments were necessary to the rates indirectly derived from observation of failed pillars. To this end, measurements were taken on over 350 pillars at 13sites on 6 mines. The project was done as a collaborative effort between the University of Pretoria, the Nancy School of Mines and CSIR Miningtek. During the course of the investigation, it was found that the majority of pillars display maximum scaling at mid height, that there was no clear preferential direction of pillar scaling, and that pillar corners do not scale significantly more than the mid pillar areas. The most important conclusion was that the scaling rates found by measurement agreed with the inferred rates found in the previous work. The previously developed procedure for the prediction of pillar life spans consequently requires no adjustment, although the error span is in the region of 20%. It is recommended to do further research into the effect of sealing of panels and, possible chemical changes taking place in the pillars as they age on the scaling rate.

Deep level block caving as a mining method is becoming more popular due to the fact that it is the lowest cost per ton underground extraction system. However, many block caves do not achieve their full potential due to draw horizon instability. In this paper five design rules are given to overcome this problem. The design rules described are applicable for slusher and trackless block caves where the operational depths exceed 500 metres.
