This paper describes the modification of a nonelectric detonator which is ignited by a signal tubing. The heart of the new detonator lies in a so-called ignition transmitting element. The construction of the transmitting element is such that the detonator remains closed even after the signal tube has functioned. Due to the sealing of the delay element, this nonelectric detonator achieves the same accurate delay timing as high tech delay electric detonators and will not fail due to a sudden pressure loss.

An important factor to consider during blast damage investigations is whether the structure was constructed on collapsible soils. Traditionally, these soils have been considered to be soils such as loess deposits, which occur along the Mississippi River in locations such as Vicksburg, MS. However, recent research into collapsible soils has indicated that a number of soils may also fall into this category. A collapsible soil is any soil that is susceptible to large decreases in bulk volume upon saturation.

The Astec Bluerock Quarry is excavating an extremely difficult to blast rock type due to its highly variable jointing density that leads to excessive oversize. A drill and blast benchmarking exercise led to eight recommendations to minimise this problem. Quarry personnel instigated a continuous improvement blasting program, that has implemented six out of eight recommendations, resulting in a large reduction in the oversize and increased crusher throughputs for a marginal 7% increase in drill and blast costs. Unit costs have reduced by an estimated 10%.

The Blasting In the summer of 1999, a Southern California drilling and blasting company conducted blasting as part of the grading operations at the Highlands Ranch development in San Diego, California. Highlands Ranch was a new single family residential project located near older residential properties in the area. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) is responsible for the regulation and enforcement of the explosives laws codified in the Organized Crime Control Act of 1970, Title XI. A large open-cast limestone mine had its blasting operations severely restricted by the imposition of limiting PPV levels to protect a water pipe-line passing through the mine property. Attempts were made to measure the strains induced in the pipe by ground vibrations, so that a less restrictive blasting limitation could be established on a scientific basis.

The Pacific Northwest has an abundance of seamy, coarse granite and basalt rock. It is used primarily for road construction. Small quarries are opened nearest the road work to cut the cost of hauling. The crushers are portable. Small diameter holes 2 1/2" to 3 1/2" are placed close together to insure proper fragmentation. It is not unusual to load and shoot 100 to 700 holes 40' deep.

AECL Research (AECL) has constructed an Underground Research Laboratory (URL) as a facility for research and development in the Canadian Nuclear Fuel Waste Management Program. The objectives of the program are to develop and evaluate the technology to ensure safe, permanent disposal of Canada's nuclear fuel waste. Several multidisciplinary experiments and engineering demonstrations are planned for the URL over the next ten years.
