Some important mineral fields are referred to in discussing the formation of placer deposits in Australia.Testing methods include boring by hand, with percussion rigs, with auger and pit digging drills, and by vibro drilling.Sampling errors are minimized by the use of correct techniques and equipment for boring, sampling and sample dressing. A hypothetical set of data is used to demonstrate the final process of evaluation, and somerelevant taxation provisions are discussed.

Between February and August of 1986, Dr Alfred Petrick visited New Zealand sponsored under a Fulbright grant administered by the New Zealand-United States Educational Foundation. The grant supported a research project completed by Dr Petrick having as an objective, the preparation of a preliminary economic evaluation of the mining of six Otago lignite deposits as a source of energy for steam power generation or in liquid fuels. The research is limited to consideration of preliminary geological and engineering data on the six deposits and to the time constraints of the Fulbright visit. This paper is a summary of the final Fulbright report. The complete report including the listings of the computer programs is available from the Otago School of Mines.

The Wainui Mill was conceived as a 60 - 90 t/d central mill to process gold ores of the Thames area of New Zealand from small mines in the district. The ores of the region exhibit various degrees of refractory response to conventional cyanidation leach due to the fineness of the gold, and association with pyrite. The alternative circuits involving cyanidation, flotation, and possible small-scale smelting are examined. The environmental impacts have been audited by the Commission for the Environment and were found to be acceptable.

This paper synthesises the findings of five studies undertaken by the CSIRO Wealth from Oceans Flagship in 2009-10. This research explores the concerns, expectations, and information needs of a range of stakeholders, (ie government, seafloor exploration and mining industry, other marine industries, environmental non-government organisations (NGOs), community members) in relation to the possible exploration and mining of minerals and aggregates from the seafloor, as well as the conditions for meaningful engagement with communities regarding seafloor exploration and mining (SEM) activities. The SEM industry has been described as the ‘next minerals frontier’, as incentives to explore and mine seafloor resources increase because of diminishing reserves of easily accessible onshore mineral and aggregate deposits. However, the conditions (if any) under which SEM would be acceptable to stakeholders (notably the public and regulators) have not been established. This work seeks to address this gap and ascertain the levels at which potential environmental and social impacts become unacceptable to those stakeholders. The research follows an earlier phase of studies undertaken in 2006 - 2008 that: identified the opportunities and barriers to the development of SEM in Australia, took the first step towards understanding the public and political contexts surrounding the industry, and mapped the positions of key stakeholders and captured their major issues and concerns. Together, these two phases of research confirm that environmental concerns dominate stakeholders’ responses to the idea of an expanded industry. However, the most recent phase of research has also found that, similar to current onshore scenarios, reservations due to environmental concerns do not completely outweigh social and economic objectives. This is provided stakeholders feel confident that there are systems in place (regulatory frameworks, watchdogs, independent research, and stakeholder consultation) to ensure that all interests are protected. When making decisions about the social acceptability of potential seafloor mining, stakeholders favour a precautionary approach, supported by rigorous scientific analysis of the potential environmental impacts, transparent and socially responsive management processes, and meaningful stakeholder engagement. This paper outlines the details of these findings, which may also be relevant to understanding the social acceptability or ‘social licence to operate’ for other future mining scenarios featuring a new approach or technology.

MINING operations in the Waihi mine began, under the present proprietorship in the year 1889. Previous to this, and as far back as the year 1880, the presence of reefs in the Martha Hill had been known, and surface working on a small scale had beencarried out, without any great measure of success. The only method of treatment in use at this time was the old system of light stamps, amalgamating tables and berdans, and recovery by this method being low, little margin for profit was left, so thatthe property in these days was not considered of great importance and work on the area was only carried on spasmodically by different owners.On the transfer of the leases to the present company, calcining, dry crushing, and hot pan amalgamation was adopted as the method of treatment, and this system was continued till the more modern cyanide process was introduced and applied. As themethods of treatment and gold-saving became more efficient with the application of more modern and scientific processes, the importance and future prospects of the mine became more and more pronounced, and mining on a larger and more comprehensive scale was gradually established.As in the case of ore treatment, mining methods in the early stages were not as far adv.anced as the adopted practice of today, and numerous shafts, levels close together in vertical height.

The treatment of hypersaline waters originating from numerous gold projects within the Western Australian Goldfields region via membrane technology has been assessed. A combination of Ultra-filtration (UF) and Nano-filtration (NF) using Ecotechnol’s modified elements effectively removes the polyvalent ions responsible for the high lime and cyanide consumption as well as the prevalence of scale formation characteristic of gold operations in this region. Through removing up to 98% magnesium, 94% calcium and 99.7% sulfates from hypersaline water with total dissolved solids from 40,000mg/L to 250,000mg/L, Ecotechnol and subsequent independent tests have demonstrated up to an 87% reduction in lime consumption and through the ability to increase the operating leach pH, reduce cyanide consumption by up to 28%.CITATION:Tapley, B, Stoitis, N and Lien, L, 2015. A predicted increase in aluminium production and the possibility of a diminishing supply of petroleum coke for anode electrodes in alumina reduction cells makes it desirable to find alternative electrode materials. Browncoal char, with a lower ash content and with an elemental purity similar to petroleum coke, was produced by leaching in hydrochloric acid, washing with water, and charring at 1,150°C. The cost of processing is estimated tobe competitive with petroleum coke.Without further processing the bulk density and real density were undesirably low, but by briquetting the coal before charring and crushing, the bulk density was improved to 92 per cent of the petroleum coke value andthe particle density was improved to 92 per cent of the density of petroleum coke by water displacement or 75 per cent by mercury displacement.Pre-baked electrodes were prepared from the char alone, mixtures of petroleum coke and char, and from petroleum coke alone, all bonded with coal tar pitch.The electrodes were tested for the usual physical properties and were evaluated for performance in a laboratory size alumina reduction cell.Electrodes based on brown coal char alone were found to be inferior in physical properties and performance, but mixtures of the char and petroleum coke, despite poorer density, electrical resistivity, and carbon consumptionon a theoretical basis, in performance tests gave up to 17 per cent better carbon consumption per weight of aluminium produced and 21 per cent better electrical current efficiency than the electrodes based on petroleum,coke alone.It is suggested that larger scale tests are warranted.

The development of a resource project inevitably requires the investigation of a vast range of issues across most engineering disciplines û mining, metallurgical, chemical, civil, electrical, mechanical and environmental û as well as the geosciences. It is also a characteristic feature of the resource industry that no two orebodies û and hence no two development projects û are the same. So these technical issues have to be addressed to a greater or lesser extent in evaluating any resource projectÆs development potential. Not surprisingly then, technical issues tend to predominate when assessing the development potential of a project in the process typically referred to as ædoing a feasibility studyÆ. But the principal purpose of a æfeasibility studyÆ is to determine whether a development opportunity makes good business sense, not just whether it is technically possible. Resolution of technical issues is often seen as the primary focus of a feasibility study, whereas in reality, these technical issues are the basis upon which an asset delivery and business plan is built. This is not to say that technical issues are unimportant û they are a prerequisite to the demonstration of a projectÆs viability. The feasibility study process must therefore demonstrate that not only have the technical issues been satisfactorily addressed, but also that the broader commercial, economic and social issues have been considered in the development of a comprehensive business plan, which includes an assessment of the risk-reward profile of the proposed development. This paper will present a framework for the conduct of æfeasibility studiesÆ and provide guidance to minimum standards and best practice.

Gold Fields Australia is constructing two major ventilation shafts at the Wallaby gold mine in Western Australia. The new ventilation shafts are required to facilitate the long term ventilation strategy for the mine, thereby allowing continued extraction of ore beyond 1000 m below the surface. The construction work has involved all of the challenges that shaft construction can throw up, including challenging geotechnical conditions, unexpected high water inflows and major circulation loss during pilot hole drilling for raise boring. An extensive geotechnical and hydrological investigation program was undertaken prior to awarding the shaft construction contracts. While most of the risks were identified, several proved to be much more challenging than expected. The shaft construction methods included conventional sinking into the fresh rock profile in each shaft, followed by raise bore pilot hole drilling and reaming. A headframe was constructed for the first shaft, which was sunk to 92 m with a stage suspended in the shaft to facilitate the concrete lining and provide rope guides for the kibble winding. Drawing from experience when sinking the first shaft, additional ground pre-conditioning was implemented for the second shaft, which was pre-supported with continuous piles to 28 m followed by sinking to 50 m using a crane instead of winders and a headframe. Following the conventional sinking through the weathered zone in each shaft, the shafts were completed using a raise bore. The first shaft utilised a riser pipe and rotary vertical drilling system (RVDS) with the second shaft having utilised a dual rotary rig for pilot hole drilling. As in other countries, gold mining inNew Zealand has been cyclic in character. Looking at these cycles may provide insights as to what may occur in the future and that is the basis for this study.   New Zealand has experienced four gold mining cycles. The first began in 1857, peaked in 1866 and terminated in 1890. This cycle was characterised by alluvial gold mining by individuals and small groups. This is referred to as the Labour Led cycle. The second cycle began in 1890 and reached its peak in 1906 and terminated in 1929. This cycle was characterised by the use of dredges in alluvial gold mining and was also the peak of hard rock mining. This cycle is referred to as the Technology Led Cycle. The third cycle peaked in 1940. This cycle was far less significant than the previous cycles, arising out of the depression when the unemployed embarked on small scale alluvial mining. This overprinted the continuing decline that occurred after 1906. This cycle is here referred to as the Depression Overprint Cycle.   The fourth cycle began in 1984 when production began to climb rapidly from a very low base. The growth in production was spurred by rising gold prices in the early 1980s resulting in relatively low grade gold-bearing alluvial ground becoming economic. But in the 1990s, production from the new hardrock mines in Coromandel and Otago has overshadowed alluvial production. This cycle is here referred to as the Price Led cycle.   What are the future prospects for gold in New Zealand? Although there are many factors involved, this will be largely determined by two factors; firstly, continued access to prospective gold-bearing properties, and secondly, the price of gold. Based on these factors, three future industry scenarios have been developed. The first of these is industry collapse, in which access to prospective property is constrained and prices mayor may not weaken. The second is industry consolidation, in which the available ground is accumulated by a small number of large companies who can use economies of scale to weather price fluctuations. The third scenario is industry growth, in which access to prospective ground is constrained in environmentally sensitive areas but is otherwise relatively unconstrained. Efficient companies are allowed to work in a policy and economic framework that allows them to make a major contribution to the economy.   While the industry cannot control these critical factors, a good knowledge of the positive role gold mining could play in the future economy may provide a framework by which the access issue, in particular, may be addressed from a balanced perspective.

The paper outlines the development of a solvent extraction process for the recovery of scandium, yttrium, thorium, and heavy lanthanides from waste sulphate liquor at the Port Pirie uranium treatment plant. A summary is given of known solvents for these elements, including the recently developed alkyl-phosphoric acid esters which are applicable to sulphate solutions.A kerosene solution of di- (2'-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (EHPA) has been suggested by some workers as a suitable solvent for fractionation of the lanthanides. Experimental work with this solvent showed that it could be used for initial recovery of the above elements from low concentrations in the complex sulphate liquor. In particular, scandium could be recovered as a high grade product by extraction with 0·lM EHPA, followed by a purification strip with 9N sulphuric acid, and final stripping of scandium with sodium hydroxide solution.To enable alkaline stripping to be used successfully, the kerosene solution of the reagent was modified by the addition of a small proportion of nonanol. Experimental work included laboratory scale batch tests and small pilot scale continuous tests.A proposed extension of the process for the separate recovery of individual heavy lanthanides, yttrium, and thorium is described.INTRODUCTIONAt the Port Pirie uranium treatment plant of the South Australian Government, large volumes of "barren liquor", free from 'uranium, are at present run to waste. This "barren liquor" results from sulphuric acid leaching of Radium,Hill uranium concentrate, followed by separation of solid residues and removal of uranium from the clear solution by ion exchange. Gladstone Hill, a volcanic-hosted low-sulfidation epithermal prospect in the Coromandel Peninsula, is less than 1 km from the world-class Martha Hill Au-Ag deposit. Gold-silver-bearing quartz veins occur in Late Miocene andesitic volcanic rocks of the Waipupu Formation that are extensively altered. The occurrence, spatial distribution and temporal relationships of hydrothermal minerals have been determined along two cross sections that transect the Amaranth, Gladstone, Cowshed and Moonlight veins. Quartz and pyrite are ubiquitous along these sections. Adularia and chlorite are widespread, but both are scarce in wall rocks adjacent to the Moonlight and Cowshed veins. By contrast, rare hydrothermal albite and epidote are restricted to wall rocks surrounding the Amaranth vein. Illite, which replaces adularia, is widespread and grades laterally eastwards into a zone of interstratified illite-smectite that envelops the Moonlight and Cowshed veins. During late-stage hydrothermal activity, rare calcite formed at depth and uncommon kaolinite and alunite formed at shallow levels. The overall clay mineral zonation with illite grading eastward into interstratified illite-smectite reflects paleothermal gradients of >220¦C to -170¦C towards the margin. The alteration assemblage of quartz, adularia, chlorite, albite, epidote, illite, interstratified illite-smectite and pyrite reflects formation from a near-neutral to weakly alkaline pH chloride water that contained low concentrations of CO2, Late calcite formed from very local descending steam-heated CO2rich water, whereas the rare assemblage of kaolinite and alunite formed from shallow steam-heated acid-sulfate water. Analysis of the available data indicates that the Martha Hill deposit and the Gladstone Hill area formed within a single large geothermal system. We infer that the Martha Hill deposit formed in the main upflow zone, whereas the Gladstone Hill area may have formed adjacent to this upflow zone.

Obviously, the paramount advantages of contract mining have been recognised by mine developers throughout Australia, as evidenced by surface gold mining operations of significant output almost exclusively being performed under contract. These paramount advantages of using an experienced professionally managed contractor result from the mine developer being freed from financing the required relatively large capital expenditure at current relatively high interest rates or in a capital scarce stock market, and from the need to recruit and sustain a large operating work force in a competitive labour market.

Since the publications of Gy’s initial work, many authors have discussed the approaches to estimate the variance of the fundamental sampling error (FSE). Experimental tests suggested by Pitard and François-Bongarçon determine the sampling parameters K and a to calibrate Gy’s formula. The heterogeneity test and the sample tree method are well known and broadly used for many commodities. However, prior to the analysis, the collection of a representative sample is an intriguingly difficult task. The composite for the heterogeneity tests often consists of run-?of-?mine material or processed ore on a conveyor belt. In most cases the final sample does not have enough mass, mixes different geological units, represents a rare blend and does not characterise the deposit. In order to obtain a reliable composite for trace elements and low-grade ores, sampling practitioners suggest at least half a ton of material.To prevent the common representative pitfalls in the FSE, this case study focuses on a single gold-?bearing geological unit collected in situ. With this unit being structured by the mine geologists, but with the interaction between engineers and chemists, it was possible to validate the reconciliation suggested by Pitard (2015). The heterogeneity test and the sample tree method were performed using 500 kg of a smoky quartz from a single geological domain and the results were compared to Gy’s formula. The logging practice by the geologists was modified, emphasising the definition of the size of the gold nugget or its cluster, number of grains and association. Finally, a mineralogical study was conducted on the geological unit to define the liberation factor. Commencing with early experiences in iron ore beneficiation made at Beeshoek Mine, the paper follows through the process of extensive mineralogical and metallurgical investigations carried out during feasibility study. The paper will discuss the design process and logic followed over the last years, the challenges and decisions the design team faced in order to draw the conclusions that ultimately resulted in today’s value add approach at Assmang’s Khumani Operations.As integral part of the benefi ciation concept, a focus is set on the jigs, explaining the plant concepts, planned expansions and their contribution to the overall value add approach at the mine.The case study is intended to describe the outcomes of the design versus the actual achieved and the further value add projects to be implemented. As for future prospect, the incorporation of Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separation (WHIMS) demonstrates Assmang Khumani’s pursuit to maximise productivity and overall recovery.DMS was evaluated as an alternative to jigging within a comparative test work study, but in conclusion the option had to be excluded due to its inability to achieve the high density cut point required to achieve the sales specifi cations. In contrast, the investigation on producing an additional middlings fraction on the lumpy ore jigs prove to be an adequate option for further improvements of overall mass yield. With further liberation, a saleable product will be achieved by secondary beneficiation on Fines Jigs and WHIMS.Concluding, jigs are considered the most viable and cost effective benefi ciation process for off-grade ore +0.8 - 32 mm at Beeshoek as well as at Khumani, while WHIMS is the process under consideration for super fines recovery.

Effects of DA as a Grinding Aid on Selective Grinding of Low-Grade Bauxite Effects of DA (a copolymer of acrylic acid and acrylamide) as a grinding aid on selective grinding of low-grade bauxite were investigated in this study. The addition of DA into the grinding system enhanced the selectivity of grinding and increased the A/S ratio in the coarse fraction of ground product, leading to improved throughput of grinding mills and alumina recovery. The results showed that DA decreased the viscosity of slurry significantly and hence improved grinding efficiency due to low viscosity at a high slurry concentration. Both the hydrogen bond formation and chemical adsorption existed between DA and the surface of bauxite particles. The adsorption of DA on the surface of bauxite could decrease stress needed for crack initiation and extending during grinding, prevent new-born crack surfaces from rejoining, and promote the expansion of the cracks.

This paper presents a metaheuristic solution to the optimisation of open pit long-term production scheduling with a stockpile and geological uncertainty. The optimisation formulation is a two-stage stochastic integer programming (SIP) model that determines the optimal mining sequence that maximises the total discounted cash flow, while penalising for high deviations from production targets. A parallel implementation of Tabu Search is proposed to accelerate the solution of the SIP formulation and take full advantage of multicore computer processing. Different variants of the proposed algorithm are applied to a case study to assess the performance of the parallel approach. The proposed algorithm and variants are benchmarked using linear relaxation of the complete problem to determine robustness and provide a better overview of the related performance. The results show a net improvement over the sequential solution, and the new proposal seems to be promising when working with a large-scale data set.CITATION:Senécal, R and Dimitrakopoulos, R, 2014. Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was shown to catalyse biodegradation of chalcopyrite concentrates. The process was growth associated at normal temperatures (30°C) in dilute acid solution (pH2, H2SO4) in submerged cultures. Approximately 20% of the copper dissolved in 22 days in the presence of T ferrooxidans while less than 0.6% was released when bacteria were absent. In ore column leachates, the iron and sulphur oxidizing species T ferrooxidans, ranged from I04 to I06 cells/ml while exdusively sulphur oxidizing species ranged from I02 to 104 cells/ml. T ferrooxidans predominated below pH 3 while other sulphur oxidizing bacteria favoured higher pH. Organisms were distributed vertically in ore columns according to pH differences, resulting from gradual acid consumption by gangue, during trickle irrigation.There was a sequential development of bacteria in leachates from fresh ore irrigated with water only. High pH sulphur oxidizers were always present, low pH sulphur oxidizers appeared within a week while T ferrooxidans took 50 days to show up. Routine monitoring of bacteria in dump leachates provided a qualitative indication of events in otherwise inaccessible ore bodies.
