The regional syndeformational metamorphism affecting the Itabira Iron Formation (IIF) at Quadrilßtero Ferrffero (QF) was formerly discussed by Dorr (1965), who proposed that quartz grain size could monitor the metamorphism, according to James (1955), and that the formation of haematite could be the result of the synchronous metasomatic process. Herz (1979) suggested the existence of three metamorphic zones, not mentioning the haematite formation. It could be observed that the primary oxide phase in the IIF is magnetite and most of the hard haematite was derived from the metamorphic replacement of magnetite, forming micaceous or schistose haematite. Differently from most iron formations in the world, the formation of haematite deposits at QF occurred under high oxygen fugacity during metamorphism. The haematite microlaths display a strong preferred orientation, which determines the alongated shapes of the fragments. The terms foliated and unfoliated haematite have been applied by Dorr to the micaceous or schistose haematite, and to the isotropic, hydrothermally derived haematite. Under the microcope, the haematite exhibits a strong crystallographic or lattice orientation encircling the magnetite and martite porphyroclasts. The strain rate determined and defined the textural variation, size and economic importance of the deposits and the ore grade. Metamorphism at QF increases eastward and resulted in the formation of a gruneritic Fe-Mg amphibole, at the western portion, followed by a cummingtonitic amphibole at the central-western part, succeeded by the actinolite zone at the central-eastern part, and finally to the tremolite-anthophyllite zone to the east. These zones, arranged in a north-south pattern, can be followed in the pelitic units, whereas appear sericite-chlorite, kyanite-chloritoid and garnet-staurolite respectively. Carbonate geothermometry in IIF also may support the metamorphic variations. At the western zone the haematite forms small lenses within the itabirite, P-contents are slightly higher than in the remaining IIF, haematite grain size is minute, resulting in a submicaceous texture and the amount and dimension of relict magnetite within haematite is greater than in the other parts of QF. Jangada and Serra Azul deposits are examples of this zone. The central-western zone is characterised by significant haematite deposits, in considerable quantity and size, haematite grain size increased, in order to produce a micaceous texture, the P-contents and the amount of magnetite decreased. Pico do Itabirito, Cappo Xavier, Capitpo do Mato and Tamanduß correspond to the deposit type of this zone. At the eastern-central portion the amount of the hard haematite deposits decreases, increasing the soft haematite ore due to higher strain rates. However, it can be perceived that the relict magnetite almost disappeared and the haematite grain size became coarser than the haematite from the western zones. At the eastern zone, the haematite deposits exhibit typical schistose texture, the magnetite porphyroclasts are absent and the lowest P-grades in the haematitic iron formation. The haematite bodies characteristic from this zone are Andrade, Morro Agudo and the deposits at the Itabira District. The hydrothermally derived compact and isotropic haematite deposits, formed subsequently to the micaceous haematite bodies, were generated after deformation ceased, but under very high fluid pressure. The metamorphic reactions magnetite + quartz + H2O = grunerite + haematite and magnetite + quartz + H2O = grunerite + O2 were decisive in the formation of the metamorphic haematite deposits.

The Greenland Group, Westland, can be characterised with respect to environmental issues by the application of a GIS database (DAME), and specific sampling campaigns. Waters draining gold mineralised areas have a distinctive chemistry characterised by neutral pH and arsenic as a trace element. The acid neutralising capacity (ANC) from carbonates usually exceeds the maximum potential acidity (MPA) from sulphides resulting in circum-neutral pH. These waters are readily distinguishable from waters draining coal mine related areas, which commonly have low pH (~4) and low As concentrations (~0.1 ppm). In contrast, dissolved arsenic mobilised from Greenland Group historic gold mining areas is up to 2.4 ppm. This As mobilisation is controlled by the secondary As mineral, scorodite (FeAsO2+2H2O). Maximum dissolved As concentrations increase with increasing pH, corresponding to the increasing solubility of scorodite with increasing pH. Dissolved As is attenuated by dilution, precipitation of scorodite, and/or adsorption to iron oxyhydroxide (HFO). Adsorption to HFO is an important attenuation mechanism in and adjacent to many mine sites. HFO is abundant at mine sites where pyrite was abundant in fresh rock, such as where the mineralised zone is dominated by disseminated pyrite. Pyrite, and resulting HFO, are relatively rare where mineralisation occurred as well-defined quartz veins. Localised HFO occurs also where ankerite oxidises in host rocks. Arsenic output flux (ca. 25 g/day) from historic gold mine sites is commonly less than the natural background flux from mineralised rocks (>5000 g/day).

Were it simply a matter of extracting tin from the simple tin sulphide, the proposition would undoubtedly be simple enough. When, however, other valuable metallic sulphides are combined with the tin, and it is required to separate these intomarketable products, then the proposition becomes somewhat complex, and such is the case with the class of material of which I am about to write. The locality where it occurs is Howell, New South Wales, and chiefly at the Conrad Silver-Lead Mine. The tin sulphide occurs chemically alloyed with copper, iron and other metals associated with galena, pyrites, mispickel, blende and silver sulphide in varying proportions, and generally in a gangue of highly crystallised quartz.Several varieties of tin sulphides occur, and from the following analyses of three minerals, these being specimens specially selected free from foreign matters, it will be seen that the chemical composition is somewhat complex.

Gold mineralisation at the Macraes Gold Project is hosted in the Hyde-Macraes shear zone and can be traced for ~30 km along strike, although economic resources are confined to a seven kilometre section in the vicinity of the Macraes  township. The shear zone, which typically dips at a low angle (~20¦) to the NE, is bounded by an upper hanging wall shear and a lower footwall fault. Mineralisation occurs along the hangingwall of the shear zone as well as in low angle concordant shears and stockworks. Ore types include graphitic cataclasites with variable amounts of quartz veining, 'lode schists' and quartz-vein stockworks. Mine geology and grade control activities are designed to ensure accurate definition of ore and waste as well as the accurate prediction of ore grade. Grade control involves an integrated process of blast hole sampling, geological mapping and geostatistical modelling. Geological mapping is carried out post blasting by means of excavating trenches across are zones defined by assay data. Conditional Simulation is used to model raw assay data to define ore-waste contacts and estimate ore block grade, although, geologically defined contacts have precedence. Low angle ore zones impart a wedge shaped geometry to many ore blocks. These ore blocks are bounded by contacts that can be selectively mined to, thereby reducing misallocation of ore and minimising grade dilution.

Poor standards of electrical installation and maintenance continue to contribute to electrical related fatalities and injury risk in the mining industry. Electrical isolation has the potential to initiate major unwanted events (MUEs) and as such requires thorough analysis to demonstrate adequate management. There have been 719 incidents related to accidental contact with electricity over the past five years in the Queensland mining industry (Queensland Government DME, 2012a, 2012b) with the last fatality being recorded in 1997 (MESA, 2012).A project funded by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) has developed a form of a safety case using the four-layered æCoal Mine Safety Regime (CMSR)Æ approach. The CMSR is transparent and robust as it includes full site risk assessment and special issues risk assessment to be demonstrated as part of the process.The practical application of the CMSR has been demonstrated using a longwall mining case study site, where a unique 11 kV armoured face conveyor (AFC) is in operation. The case study has involved progressive application of the requirements of each layer of the CMSR (see Figure 1) to high voltage (HV) electrical isolation related issues. The project has specifically concentrated on understanding and analysing two high priority MUEs, electric shock and unplanned movement of equipment, through Layer 1 analysis. These two MUEs are an important part of the project as they have demonstrated the steps that may be taken to satisfy the risk management processes at Layer 1 of the CMSR and have contributed to resolving issues at the other three layers of the CMSR.The analysis of HV electrical isolation has been used as an exemplar to demonstrate the CMSR process and its practical application. The CMSR is applicable to major/principal hazards management as identified by the New South Wales and Queensland jurisdictions.This paper provides an overview of the development of a form of safety case using the CMSR and introduces the case study application for HV electrical isolation risk management at underground coal mines focusing on the major unwanted event of electric shock.This project provides the mining industry with a documented, publicly accessible, form of safety case using the CMSR approach for the first time.CITATION:Kizil, G V, Griffiths, D, Bye, A and Joy, J, 2012. Iron Road Limited (IRD) is currently developing the Central Eyre Iron Project (CEIP) at Warramboo on the Eyre Peninsula, South Australia. The project consists of a 30 year open pit mine, magnetite processing facilities, standard-gauge railway and deep water, Cape class capable port. Major South Australian government approvals have been received and funding arrangements confirmed.The 4.5 Bt Mineral Resource (3.7 Bt Ore Reserve), the largest in Australia and among the largest globally, is to be mined to produce 24 Mt/a high-grade, 67 per cent Fe, magnetite concentrate. This in-demand, premium product has a P80 of ~100 µm, suitable for both direct sinter feed and an additive in pelletising.The extensively drilled, homogeneous orebody is unique in both geology and mineralogy; only averaging 15 per cent Fe yet coarse-grained with almost negligible phosphorus and sulfur content. This has allowed significant opportunities to tailor the mining method to the orebody, utilising both optimised blasting as first stage comminution, as well as in-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) to reduce the heavy haulage diesel fleet and optimise the pit shell.Approximately 1 Mt/d of total material, ore and waste, is required to be moved from the pit daily, introducing materials handling challenges, overcome by a flexible IPCC set-up, multiple overland conveyors and an exacting mine plan. Non-conventional waste and tailings storage is utilised to allow for significant water savings, progressive rehabilitation and minimisation of land impact.The processing facilities utilise both the magnetic and density properties of the magnetite to beneficiate the ore. The coarse-grained nature of the ore is exploited to minimise comminution yet still liberate a high quality product. Utilisation of modular construction methods allows risk reduction during construction and reduced pumping requirements during operation.This paper highlights the uniqueness of the CEIP, with focus on the mineralisation of the orebody, and the beneficial impacts this has on both the proposed mining method and processing. "The estimate and control of sampling errors is essential for all mining operations, especially when dealing with strategic materials, such as niobium. This paper is based on a traditional quality assurance and quality control technique used to confirm mineralised intersection zones, and proposes the validation of sampling data using diamond drill twin holes, in order to evaluate and improve the quality of the current data set. The geological model of the niobium mine – located in Araxá, Minas Gerais, Brazil – was built including 77 diamond drill holes of a sampling campaign carried out during the 1970s. There are few records about the collection and preparation procedures of these past samples, making it difficult to estimate the errors associated with their analytical results. Therefore, 11 twin drill holes were drilled to compare their samples against the samples from the 1970s drilling campaign. The new hole locations were chosen as near as possible to the old holes location. The JORC Code, 2012 edition, relates the use of twin holes as a good sampling technique to assess sampling and assay data. Three parameters were considered to validate the 1970s drill hole campaign by the twin drill hole campaign: the difference of the coordinates between the paired holes the difference among the positions of the geological contacts to validate the geologic description the difference between the paired samples grades was calculated to validate the analytical results.The analysis of the grade range variation between sample pairs was based on three techniques: geostatistical interpretation of vertical semivariogram to obtain the nugget effect calculation of the relative difference between duplicates calculation of the error associated with the sampling protocol established according to Pierre Gy’s Theory of Sampling.The results were satisfactory for hole coordinates; however, the ore content showed a high deviation, although this divergence can be explained by the nugget effect. For the lithological intervals, the new results contributed to an effective identification of variations among lithologies, ie brown weathered ore and saprolite. Simulation and Analysis of Media Behaviour in the Tower Mill by Discrete Element Method for Estimating the Power Draw and Spatial Distribution of Grinding Process The trends to the Tower Mill (TM) for grinding the materials are increased recently due to its unique merits. Among the various considerations of this machine, the main important items are increasing the efficiency of grinding as more as possible while keep the power consumption, manufacturing and maintenance costs as less as possible. Because this grinding process includes a huge numbers of media particles (ball or other shapes) that are interacted with each other and body of the machine, the DEM (Discrete Element Method) way is a very useful and essential step to getting confident evaluations. Because the DEM simulation is a very young scientific field and proper commercial software are very rare and still under modification, at first step, a FORTRAN code is developed for DEM simulation of two laboratory Tower Mill models (KM5 and KD5). The simulation and experimental results matched each other properly. Then one another DEM software was implemented to perform simulation of bigger models (huge numbers of balls), meanwhile could handle the complex 3D geometry data. The simulation and experimental results were compared and analysed in detail for not only laboratory but also for industrial models (KW5, KWD5, KWD50, KW300F, KW700F and KW1500) without any manipulation or compromising of the parameters of simulation. Some numeric data of industrial models are hidden here due to confidential reasons. The relative velocity of balls (ball-ball and ball-TM body), dissipate energy, interacted forces and stresses during the process are the key outputs of DEM simulation for design this machine. Therefore the main important processes in a Tower Mill machine are recognised and consequently some horizons of development of this machine are distinguished.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Huoqiu iron ore field in north-west Anhui province is located in the south-east margin of the North China Craton and hosts large iron resources. Orebodies are hosted in Neoarchean amphibolite facies metamorphic rocks, forming silicon-iron bands from north to south. The area is dominated by an Early Precambrian basement consisting of Neoarchean grey gneisses, amphibolites and metasediments. The gneisses are similar with assemblages of Trondhjemite-Tonalite-Granodiorite in compositions and intercalated with amphibolites. Igneous zircons from gneisses and amphibolites have U-Pb ages of 2.86 and 2.75 Ga respectively, which are interpreted as the crystallisation ages of their protolith. Zircons from amphibolite and gneiss have eHf(t) values of 2.4–15.5 and -3.0–1.5 respectively. The tDM2(Hf) model ages of the gneiss range from 2.87 to 3.14 Ga, which is consistent with tDM1(Hf) ages of amphibolite (2.84–3.16 Ga). The U-Pb-Hf isotopes thus confirm that the gneisses were generated by partial melting of amphibolite. Two granites produce two group Hf isotopic compositions. The older one (1916 ± 42 Ma) has eHf(t) values and tDM1(Hf) ages of -9.4–3.4 and 2.24–2.71 Ga respectively, whereas the younger one (1823 ± 41 Ma) shows a large variation in eHf(t) values of -18.1–12.5 and tDM1(Hf) model ages of 1.73–2.92 Ga. From March to May of 1963, the Bureau of Mineral Resources carried out an experimental aeromagnetic survey at Cobar, New South Wales, to field test a proton-precession magnetometer installation in the Cessna aircraft VH-GEO. The Cobar area was chosen as considerable information was already held on the Earth's magnetic field there, which was known to provide a range of anomalous areas that are not excessively disturbed.A procedure for survey flying and methods for processing data were developed during the survey. Contour maps of the aeromagnetic results were produced in the field. The experimental survey was successful in outlining magnetic anomalies in detail.INTRODUCTIONSince 1951 the Bureau of Mineral Resources, Geology and Geophysics (B.M.R.) has carried out an airborne magnetometer exploration programme with DC.3 aircraft carrying fluxgate magnetometer equipment. Recently a proton-precession magnetometer was developed by the Design and Development Group of the B.M.R. for observatory use. One unit modified for airborne use was installed in the Cessna light aircraft, VH-GEO. Batu Hijau is an island arc porphyry copper-gold deposit located in the southwest corner of Sumbawa Island in the Sunda-Banda archipelago of Indonesia. Southwest Sumbawa Island is underlain by Early Tertiary, low-K calc-alkaline to weakly alkaline volcanic and intrusive rocks. Within the mine area the oldest exposed rocks are medium- to thick-bedded, medium to coarse andesite volcanic lithic breccia, thin bedded, fine-grained volcaniclastic sandstones and mudstones and hypabyssal porphyritic andesite. In the eastern portion of the mine area there is a thick sequence of quartz diorite that postdates the andesites. A small stock of Equigranualar Quartz Diorite predates the Batu Hijau deposit and occupies the contact between the andesitic volcaniclastic sequence of rocks and the Porphyritic Quartz Diorite. Batu Hijau is a world-class copper-gold deposit that has a drill indicated mineable reserve of 914 million metric tonnes grading 0.525 per cent copper (10.58 billion pounds copper) and 0.403 g/t gold (11.8 million ounces gold). Mineralised material not in reserve accounts for an additional 580 million metric tonnes at 0.328 per cent Cu (4.19 billion pounds copper) and 0.171 g Au/T (3.19 million ounces gold), and including an oxide copper resource of 57 million tonnes at 0.37 per cent Cu and 0.12 g Au/T. Copper and gold mineralisation is directly related to quartz veining and wall rock alteration that developed with multiple tonalite porphyry intrusions. The tonalites were emplaced along the contact between the andesitic volcaniclastic rocks and quartz diorite intrusives. Copper and gold are zoned around the porphyry intrusions, which are designated by their contact-age relationships and other features as Old Tonalite, Intermediate Tonalite(s), and Young Tonalite(s). The Old Tonalite was the first copper-bearing intrusion, and although it is the smallest intrusion it has the highest quartz vein density, the strongest alteration and the highest grade. At least two tonalite porphyry intrusions followed the emplacement of the Old Tonalite. Each of these intrusions was associated with less quartz veining, weaker hydrothermal alteration and lower grade copper and gold than the previous intrusion. The intrusive cycle culminated with the emplacement of the Young Tonalite, which contains relatively few quartz veins, is weakly altered and mineralised. Hypogene hydrothermal alteration and sulphide mineralisation developed in five temporally and spatially overlapping stages. These stages consist of Early, Transitional, Late, Very Late, and I Zeolite alteration. Early alteration and sulphide mineralisation accompanied each tonalite porphyry intrusion, but with diminished intensity in each subsequent intrusion. Transitional and later stages of alteration and mineralisation postdate the tonalite porphyries and overprint Early stage alteration and mineralisation. Early alteration and mineralisation consisted of biotisation, secondary magnetite and plagioclase development, fine porphyry-style stockwork veining and ore mineralisation. Magnetite-biotite????quartz stringers and dark micaceous (biotite-sericite) veinlets were developed. The veinlets were accompanied by biotisation of magmatic mafic minerals and groundmass. Thin, irregular and discontinuous æAÆ type quartz veinlets and fine-grained chalcocite, digenite and bornite mineralisation accompanies the Early alteration. It is hypothesized that most of the copper mineralisation was originally deposited as bornite, digenite and chalcocite. Secondary plagioclase was added along the selvages of the early quartz veinlets. Early alteration is pervasive within and proximal to the tonalite porphyries. In the distal portions of the deposit, andalusite and anthophyllite formed at intermediate to shallow depths, and in the deeper portions of the deposit, respectively. The andalusite and anthophyllite probably developed at the same time as the early magnetite-biotite-quartz alteration in the core of the deposit. Transitional-age alteration consists of oligioclase/albite-sericite-chlorite- quartz-¦vermiculite and is associated with æBÆ quartz veins. Through-going planar æBÆ veins are thicker than æAÆ and æA-familyÆ veinlets and have chalcopyrite????bornite along vuggy centrelines and narrow oligioclase????albite alteration envelopes. Rare æCÆ chalcopyite¦quartz veinlets were also formed during Transitional alteration. During Transitional alteration early copper sulphide minerals (chalcocite, digenite and bornite) are converted to bornite and chalcopyrite. The majority of the copper (50 - 70 per cent) in the deposit is contained in ores in which chalcopyrite is the predominant sulphide. Late alteration consists of feldspar destruction and replacement by sericite and other minerals. The late alteration is accompanied by the development of æDÆ sulphide veinlets and veins. These veins consist of pyrite and quartz????chalcopyrite. Within the halos of the late pyritic veinlets biotite is replaced by sericite, quartz-sericite, quartz-andalusite, or quartz-pyrophyllite+kaolinite replace plagioclase, and magnetite is converted to specularite and/or pyrite. In the periphery of the deposit, the feldspar destructive alteration, together with outer zones of Transitional-age alteration, constitutes what is commonly referred to as a æpropylitic zoneÆ. Very Late hydrothermal alteration is also characterised by feldspar destruction, but differs from Late alteration in that feldspar is replaced by smectite in association with sericite and chlorite. Sulphide mineralisation in this stage consists of sphalerite, galena, tennantite, pyrite and chalcopyrite. The last stage or I Zeolite alteration consists of low-temperature, open space filling consisting of stilbite or laumontite¦calcite. Supergene oxidisation of the orebody extends to a maximum depth of 210m. Isolated deep oxidation occurs along open fracture zones to depths of ~400 metres along æDÆ vein filled fracture zones. Weak supergene copper enrichment occurs in a thin horizon (15 to 60 m thick) that blankets the top of the deposit. One of the most important goals of the experiments is to determine deformation and strength of the rock specimen under applying triaxial load, the status of failure condition is one of the subjects which can be used in soil mechanic and foundation engineering applications. To investigate the effect of confining pressure on the triaxial test, the rock has been considered as bonded-particles method and has been simulated by particle flow code three dimensions (PFC3D). This model, does not have pre-existing microcracks and all the particles have the same size (2 mm diameter), equal to the real specimen shape. To compare the mechanical behavior and failure pattern of the numerical and experimental results at uniaxial and triaxial tests at the same conditions, the Young's modulus, Possion's ratio as well as maximum axial stress have been considered. On the other hand, the microcracks growth and change of failure pattern at the modelling of the uniaxial and triaxial tests with different confining pressures up to failure point were reported. According to the experimental work, the number density of microcracks decreases from starting value and remains almost constant up to the failure beyond that point. The comparison of the numerical and experimental results of maximum axial stress and the Possion's ratio revealed good accordance. The initial number density of microcracks at the model was zero and increased while microcracking. Also, the sudden increment around the maximum stress was observed which is because of unstable growing of microcracks near the maximum stress. In all uniaxial and triaxial tests with different confining stresses, the number density of microcracks during the failure remains almost constant which can be considered as a proof of failure occurring in the model. The experimental results indicate the similar trend as well.

In June 2012, Lucara Diamond Corporation officially commissioned its Karowe Diamond Mine in Letlhakane, Botswana. The processing plant circuit incorporates variable speed autogeneous milling, a first for African diamond processing - only previously practiced in Russia. The paper discusses the basis for the selection of milling against the more traditional circuits incorporating crushing and scrubbing. It covers early commissioning challenges of operating a mill in an æalien environmentÆ with no immediate reference plant to look up to for bench-marking.The paper describes how these challenges were overcome and learnings quickly incorporated into the mill operating philosophy for maximum diamond liberation and minimum product damage. The plant was commissioned in three months and by August 2012 the production ramp up had reached name-plate capacity. The feed to the mill has varied from highly weathered material to extremely hard kimberlite and the operating philosophy had to be optimised for the full range of ore types. While more work is required to stretch the mill operating envelope coupled with other circuit additions to improve liberation of fine diamonds at minimum capital expenditure, the mill has, to date, performed to its billing.CITATION:van Niekerk, L M, Ndlovu, G N and Sikwa, N A, 2013. This paper sets out to discuss how alluvials - particularly mineral sands, tin and gold have adjusted to meet the problems of lower grade and more difficult physical political and economic conditions. The mineral sands industry seems to have adapted satisfactorily but less so with tin and gold.

Two of the problems long associated with the complete extraction of level pillars in the wide ore bodies of Broken Hill have been: (1) The high cost of maintaining level gangways through areas of slow subsidence to provide adequate trucking roads for the transport of sand filling; and (2) The difficulty and high cost of completely filling depleted areas. This paper deals with the experiments conducted to devise an apparatus for transporting, with the aid of compressed air, sandfill from the underground sand passes to the stopes and describes the sand blower which has been developed. This apparatus has to a large degree overcome the difficulties and removed much of the hazard associated with the rapid extraction of level pillars.Special attention is drawn to the sizing analysis of the sand and to the fact that it is not dry material. The Kevitsa Ni-Cu-PGE deposit in northern Finland contains disseminated Ni-Cu-Fe sulfides, and platinum-group minerals (PGM). The 2.05 Ga-old ultramafic-mafic, funnel-shaped intrusion is intruded into a volcanosedimentary sequence. The major ore minerals are pentlandite, hexagonal pyrrhotite and troilite, chalcopyrite, cubanite and magnetite. Pyrrhotite and pentlandite are replaced by pyrite, millerite and heazelwoodite near the surface. Nickeline, maucherite and gersdorffite are locally abundant. A pilot feed sample of 575 t of the main orebody at Kevitsa had average grades 0.45 per cent Cu, 0.36 per cent Ni, 1.85 per cent S, 0.33 g/t Pt, 0.34 g/t Pd and 0.19 g/t Au, with 0.06 per cent Ni contained in silicates. Higher PGE contents (2 - 27 ppm) occur in a vertical N-S bearing fault zone. The PGM (n = 6022) mapped in specimens of four drill holes, consist of sperrylite 34.7 vol per cent, braggite and cooperite 18.5 vol per cent, geversite 17.2 vol per cent, moncheite 14.7 vol per cent, merenskyite 6.7 vol per cent, stibiopalladinite 4.3 vol per cent, sobolevskite 1.9 vol per cent, kotulskite 0.7 vol per cent, michenerite 0.6 vol per cent, keithconnite 0.3 vol per cent, rustenburgite 0.1 vol per cent, melonite, froodite, laurite together 0.1 vol per cent and only a few grains of sudburyite, irarsite, vysotskite, erlichmanite, hongishiite, Pt-Cu-alloys, three undefined Pd and Pt bismuthinides and antimonides and a Pd-Cu-bearing Pt-Ni-Fe sulfide. Most of the PGM, 62 per cent, are enclosed in silicates, 29 per cent are intergrown with sulfides, nine per cent are within sulfides. A portion of the PGE occurs in solid solution in sulfides and arsenides. Ni flotation yielded smelter-grade concentrates averaging 12.2 per cent nickel. The average sulfide Ni recovery is 78.8 per cent and total Ni recovery is 65.3 per cent. The average Pt is 10 g/t at 55 per cent recovery, Pd 7.7 g/t at 38 per cent recovery and Au 1.6 g/t at ten per cent recovery. Cu concentrates averaged 28.6 per cent Cu with an average recovery of 78 per cent and further 11 per cent in the nickel concentrate. The copper concentrate contains 4 g/t Au at 24 per cent recovery. The average Fe to MgO ratio 17.9 is well above the targeted minimum of 4.5. The pilot results show that the previously used TETA (triethylene tetramine) can be avoided and good quality, smelter-grade concentrates can be produced from the Kevitsa ore at economical levels of recovery by conventional flotation methods.

Very few of those occupied in pursuits other than mining have any conception of the extent of boring operations that have been carried out on the gold and coal fields of Victoria, or of the valuable and definite knowledge obtainable by such means. The subject comprises various branches, which it will be necessary to describe in detail. The three main divisions are The Administrative, which includes all financial work and general management. The Professional, dealing with topographical and geological work necessary before any scheme of boring can be laid out, the preparation of plans, the inspection of cores obtained from bore holes, the examination of diamonds, etc. The Mechanical Branch, dealing with the drilling machinery, setting of diamonds, maintenance of stores, etc. In 1877, the Goverpment of Victoria decided to assist in prospecting the mineral resources of the colony by the aid of diamond drill boring, and for that purpose, a vote of £5,000 was passed, with which were purchased three diamond dulls, an American type being adopted.
