Leaching column techniques and microbiological methods have been described in detail in Madgwick and Ralph (1980) and Madgwick, Ralph and Sadler (1981).Sixty-nine kilograms of copper porphyry ore (0.4 per cent Cu, 2.7 per cent Fe) (particle size 2.4-11.2 mm; 60 The effect of sodium chloride (O.6M) irrigation on bacterial leaching of Bougainville copper porphyry ore was studied.Viability of suspended Thiobacillus ferrooxidants was reduced to less than 10 cells/ml in NaCI (O.6M) compared with 10' eells/ml in dilute II,SO, (0.01 M, pll 2). Salt irrigation had no significant effect on heterotrophic and sulphur oxidizing bacteria. Increascd short term recovery of copper (145 g/tonne/ 15 days) was followed by a marked decrease in tenors to less than 20 mg/litre/day compared with an acid leach, steady release, of 110 mg/litre/day. Resumption of acid leaching restored average solution copper to 46 mg/litre/day and the viability of suspended T Ierrooxidates to 10 cells/ml.Quantitative removal of sodium ehloride from ore particles was difficult and t races of NaCI remained for more than 200 days.

This paper discusses the technical and cost benefits of alternative data collection techniques used to collect lithological information, obtain laboratory testing samples and perform in situ testing. A comparison between diamond coring and sonic coring techniques is made using data from a recent geotechnical investigation for a final pit slope cut-back. The impacts of the coring method on laboratory strength testing results, material character testing and, ultimately, the mass strength parameters and subsequent slope design adopted are compared. The sonic coring method was chosen out of necessity and enabled the collection of tube samples of a clay unit of interest as well as bulk samples for material character and geochemical testing. The sonic coring generated unexpected degradation of clastic units, while cohesive clay-dominated units were recovered well. The likelihood that disturbance due to the coring method would result in lower than expected triaxial strength results was recognised ahead of time, with surplus samples collected and single-stage triaxial strength testing undertaken. This testing compared favourably with historic three-stage testing, where sample degradation occurred during the later stages. Material character testing of fine-grained, clay-dominated units was comparable with historic diamond core testing, while grain size estimates for more clastic units tended to be finer than previous results. The use of sonic coring over non-cored methods enabled the collection of material texture data, geotechnical properties and a full suite of geochemical analyses. This provided a comprehensive understanding of the lithological and geotechnical character of the rock and soil mass. A high-confidence geotechnical model was developed. The end result was the development of a slope design that was more aggressive than was previously designed (5° steeper inter-ramp angle), which has proven to be appropriate to the conditions following excavation. The Bayswater seam of the Singleton Coal Measures is discussed in relation to its field occurrence and related li~hotype profiles. The seam is correlated throughout widely separated areas of the Hunter Valley with the Farrells Creek seam at Howick, Broke seam at Broke, and Saddlers Creek seam at Mt. Arthur. The unusual features of composition of the seam in relation to adjacent seams is dealt with in terms of the seam environment, particular attention being given to the sandstone at the base of .the seam. Petrographic and other data are used to support the arguments submitted.

The general goal of passive acid mine drainage (AMD) treatment is to reduce levels of acidity and metals to acceptable levels. Most treatment systems use either an oxidising or a reducing strategy. In oxidising systems, alkalinity is added along with dissolved oxygen; in reducing systems, dissolved oxygen is removed (if present) and then alkalinity is added. It is recommended that small-scale field trials be conducted as part of the methodology of selecting the best remediation strategy at AMD sites. Following successful field trials at the Sullivan Mine AMD, the Pike River Coal Company (PRCC) has shown foresight by using the same system to treat AMD generated as a result of taking a bulk sample of coal at the Pike River coal field. The system reduced acidity by 100 per cent, iron by 99 per cent, aluminium by 96 per cent, nickel by 95 per cent, manganese by 51 per cent and zinc by 99 per cent. The success of this field trial suggests that a system using a reducing strategy may be appropriate for the Pike River Adit AMD site.

Nowadays, the demand for a finer grind in minerals processing has set new challenges within the industry, particularly for grinding technology. Apart from a finer grind, energy efficiency is also a key driver in optimising comminution technology.Stirred milling technology, already proven in many other industries, delivers a modern, sophisticated, flexible and energy efficient grinding solution for fine and ultra fine grinding in minerals processing. Fine grinding technology is utilised particularly in concentrate regrinding to complete the liberation of valuable minerals after the first stage of concentration. Maintaining the correct particle and particle size distribution of the regrind product is crucial for downstream process performance. Stirred milling technology offers the unique possibility for online control and optimisation of the regrind product particle size. This paper describes the basis of this online control possibility and discusses the implementation of stirred milling technology in minerals processing, particularly in regrinding applications. The University of Wollongong was named University of the Year 2000, for its work in preparing students for the e-world. Computer facilitated learning is being introduced into subjects throughout the engineering course. First year mining engineering students are introduced to computers, e-communication, using the UniversityÆs web based information system, and web based subject delivery. Mining engineering students in the mid-years of the course use programming languages and numerical computation software such as MATLAB, while students in the final years use a range of commercially available professional engineering software such as TALPAC. Most of these subjects are offered as part of the UniversityÆs Learning Online program, co-ordinated by its Centre for Educational Development and Interactive Resources (CEDIR). Learning Online subjects are delivered using the Web Course Tools (WebCT) environment. WebCT allows all resources to be accessed through the web, allows email communication between lecturer and student, and allows discussion groups for the exchange of ideas. Students can submit their assignments through WebCT and receive immediate feedback. This paper describes how WebCT has been used to deliver a first year engineering computing subject, mid-year numerical computation subjects, a mining economics subject and mine planning subjects.

The Bureau de Recherches Geologiques et Minieres (BRGM) (a French Government-sponsored geological and mining agency), through international experience gained over many years, has become very skilled in alluvial prospection, particularly for diamonds. The research laboratories within the BRGM have also been active in creating new mineral processing equipment, some of which is directly applicable to such prospection. One such development, the mobile prospection unit, is described and its application in mineral exploration is demonstrated by a consideration of the diamond search in Australia and the general exploration of the Massif Armoricain (France). Because this latter study was fundamental in the development of the concept of 'mineral-geochemistry', and its application in mineral exploration, it is also briefly described.

The feasibility of increasing the deportment of titanium species and the stability of the pseudobrookite solid solution (M3O5) in a titaniferous slag was investigated, to facilitate the valourisation of titaniferous slags. Thermochemical simulations using FactSage™ software, ver 8.3 (by Thermofact/CRTC and GTT-Technologies), and equilibration-quench experiments were conducted using an appropriate synthetic titaniferous slag composition in an oxygen partial pressure (pO2) ranging from air to 10-16 atm under non-isothermal conditions. The temperature-pressure phase stability diagram for the synthetic slag containing 37.19 per cent TiO2, 19.69 per cent SiO2, 13.12 per cent Al2O3, 16.00 per cent CaO and 14.00 per cent MgO showed that the spinel solid solution (M3O4) was the primary phase until a pO2 of 10-10.5 atm, thereafter M3O5 was the primary phase until a pO2 10-13.2 atm. M3O4 again was the primary phase between a pO2 10-13.2 and 10-16 atm. The changeover of the primary phase coincided with an increase in the liquidus surface. When cooling the slag in a pO2 of 10-16 atm, M3O5 crystallised as a ternary phase that showed a rapid increase in mass while that of the primary M3O4 phase decreased and that of the secondary perovskite (CaTiO3) phase increased at a slower rate. At 1300°C under sub-liquidus conditions, the contents of M3O5, M3O4 and CaTiO3 were about 20 per cent, 15 per cent, and 11 per cent, respectively. Experimental results showed that the Ti3+/Ti4+ mass ratio in the M3O5 phase, ie a measure of the reduction of titanium species, is not considerably sensitive to equilibration temperature in the reviewed range. Slow cooling and minimum/no oxidation during cooling of titaniferous slag would increase the deportment of titanium species to, and the growth and stability of the M3O5 phase.

The removal of a horizontal piIlar between Nos. 9 and 11 levels (1,116 feet from the collar of main shaft) was successfully carried out by blast hole drilling, and, to the best of the authors' knowledge, this mass blast of 40,000 tons of ore (requiring the use of 7,150 Ibs. of explosive and 5,385 feet of primacord) was the first occasion on which a task of this magnitude has been carried out underground in an Australian mine.Blast hole drilling was introduced by this company approximately fifteen months ago at New Cobar Mine in sub-level stoping.This experimental drilling and blasting gave very valuable information as to the correct technique to be adopted when the final plans were being prepared for the removal of the horizontal pillar at New Occidental Mine.The dimensions of this pillar were approximately 15 feet long, and from 40 to 60 feet wide, and 65 feet in depth.The block of ore extended to 35 feet above the level and 30 feet below, the upper section being partially excavated to form the bell-hole floor and grizzly chambers used for drawing off the broken ore in the shrink stope above the No. 10 level.Description of Ore-bodyThe main ore-body is situated almost vertically in a well-defined shear zone at the junction of sandstone and slate, the sandstone forming the eastern and the slate the western wall.The ore-body consists of highly silicified slate (chert) sparsely impregnated with sulphides, containing a small percentage of copper and bismuth.The total length of the ore-body is approximately 450 feet, with a maximum width of 60 feet in the main section, which is about 200 feet long.This is the section shown in longitudinal and cross-section (Fig. 1).The ore-body is divided by a horse of mullock in the northern end into two legs, the eastern and western, which are approximately 250 feet long and averaging 25 feet in width.This ore-body is strong, hard and abrasive with extremely strong walls, an ideal proposition for open stoping and mass blasting.MiningIn all levels above No. 9 the cut and fill method of ore extraction was adopted. The mining industry is faced with imperatives to improve worker safety and productivity, adapt to skills shortages, high worker turnover rates, and provide more effective maintenance to new and ever more complicated plant and equipment. While more effective use of data combined with advanced analytics offers opportunities for improvement, providing this information to the worker in the field, in real-time, has proven expensive, cumbersome and ineffective. New capabilities are now emerging which address some of the limitations experienced to date. Augmented reality (AR) provides a means to overlay interactive digital information on top of the physical world. Combining the latest visual display, mobile computing and ‘track and trace’ technologies, AR provides an experience similar to a heads-up display in a fighter jet through small, personnel devices, such as smart phones or wearable glasses. Applying AR would allow a mobile worker to ‘see’ all relevant information for a given task, in the context of their physical environment and at the time they require it. The technologies behind AR are rapidly maturing and becoming available at a price point that is viable for commercial applications. It is anticipated that AR will become ubiquitous at a consumer level within the next five years. The specific challenges faced by the mining industry make it an ideal early adopter of AR technologies. This paper examines a number of use-cases of how AR can be applied to the mining industry and the benefits that can be realised. The paper will identify areas of further work and viable opportunities for immediate adoption within the industry.

In practice a sampling solution is a compromise of many requirements: the sample should be representative; the sampling system should also be reliable, less than 95 per cent availability restricts the use of the assayed sample for process control purposes; no sample is the worst sample, and investment costs and installation space/layout are frequently a restriction. For instance, online X-ray analysers for process control introduce a delimitation error by the nature of X-ray physics. Thus only in special cases a relative accuracy better than three per cent relative, as one standard deviation, is achieved. A sampling system for process control needs not to be, as representative, for so many sample properties, as one for composite laboratory analysis samples. Sampling system maintenance is also an important issue. There are many sampling systems in the industry which have been difficult to maintain and are in disuse for lack of resources or incentives to keep them running. Pierre Gy developed the most generally accepted sampling theory. One of the main principles is that all particles in a one-dimensional process stream should have equal chances of being included into the sample. A correctly designed and operated transversing cutter comes close to this goal but has limitations in temporal representativity. For slurries an acceptable solution in many cases is to use a fixed vertical cutter(s) in a position where the slurry is well-mixed by turbulence and other means. For online analysis, reliability problems are mostly related to faulty design or installation of the piping system to the analyser. Properties of material processed, process flow sheet and piping details before and after the sampler have to be taken into account when deciding on which sampling arrangement is appropriate. Guidelines and some solutions to these issues are presented in this paper.

The mining industry uses many types of mineral and metallurgical plants to produce saleable product from ore mined. Plant design history has left current operations with a mixture of manual operation and various forms of automated process controls. Consequently, we typically see high-variability in the continuous operations together with a shortfall in the attainment of full capacity or higher utilisation of consumables.At a level of best practice, ‘operational performance excellence’ focuses on process control, using automation and control systems to deliver process optimisation. This more sophisticated delivery is a great deal more difficult than the first stage of equipment selection/installation. It includes the appropriate selection of the right instrumentation and control system, key process knowledge, individuals with a solid control engineering background/experience and the essential backing/support of the operations management team together leading to higher-value delivery. Robust solutions can be realised, considerably minimising process variation, thus leading to process optimisation. This approach results in an easier, efficient and safer process while providing considerable returns for the plant owners.How variable are your processes, and do you maintain optimised process performance with dedicated resources, modern instrumentation, ‘best practice’ control systems and performance monitoring tools? In this paper, these questions and their possible answers are discussed.I say we can do much more and be ‘more efficient’ in our efforts to remain competitive. Working in Australia’s harsh climate can have a significant impact on the health, safety and productivity of our teams, but is our working environment expected to be more prone to heat stress in the future? Climate modelling suggests that we are likely to encounter more frequent heatwaves and higher apparent temperature. Does this mean that our teams will be at greater risk of heat stress, and are we prepared to deal with the changes in our future climate and the potential impacts on our working population? This paper will review the recent research on climate and projected changes to all meteorological parameters that are important in understanding the likelihood of heat stress. The paper will also describe the challenges encountered in the management of heat stress in a workforce, and then outline a systematic approach to heat stress management that will allow you to assess your own risk and manage your day-to-day operations into the future.CITATION:Killip, C, 2015. "An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Ore-bearing intrusions in the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) were examined from nine mines: Boshekul, Nurkazgan, Kounrad, Borly, Aktogai, Koksai, Baogutu, Tuwu and Erdenet. The intrusions are diorite, granodiorite and tonalite with SiO2 contents ranging from 58 to 75 wt per cent, and show mildly fractionated rare earth elements (REE) ([LREE]N/[HREE]N = 2.7–4.7) – light REE and heavy REE – and varying Eu anomalies ([Eu]/[Eu]* = 0.58–1.4). The ratios of Sr/Y vary from 7.9 to 115 and the contents of Y from 4.6 to 23.9 ppm. The parental magmas of the intrusions are intrinsically oxidised. Zircon grains in the ore-bearing rocks from large- and intermediate-sized porphyry Cu deposits show high Ce4+/Ce3+ ratios characterised by 65–422 at Boshekul (>4.1 Mt Cu), 76–480 at Kounrad (>4.8 Mt Cu), 90–280 at Aktogai (>12 Mt Cu), 80–250 at Erdenet (>11 Mt Cu) 74–370 at Nurkazgan (>3.9 Mt Cu), 100–210 at Koksai (>1.6 Mt Cu), and 71–340 at Tuwu (~2.0 Mt Cu). In two small deposits, the ore-bearing rocks display low values of Ce4+/Ce3+; Borly (0.6 Mt Cu) ranging from 28 to 158, and Baogutu (0.6 Mt Cu) from 29 to 113. The Ce4+/Ce3+ ratio of 120 distinguishes large intermediate-size deposits from small-size deposits. The selection of the best comminution circuit for the preparation of concentration feed is a compromise based on economics, energy efficiency, labour costs, steel consumption, availability and other factors specific to each case. It is postulated that the selection must be a choice of one of the eight basic comminution circuits which can be divided into two basic groups, (1) autogenous or semi-autogenous primary mills with or without a secondary grinding stage and (2) fine crushing usually in cone crushers followed by a rod mill-ball mill circuit or a single stage ball mill circuit. The accuracy of selection may be improved by pilot plant and laboratory tests which are described in this paper. For (1) above, testing includes media competency tests with standard impact crushing, grindability and abrasion tests followed by pilot plant tests. For (2) above, bench scale crushability, grindability and abrasion testing is available. It is suggested that, through these tests, it should be possible to eliminate all but one in each group of basic comminution circuits. Then engineering and economic studies should lead to the best comminution circuit for the specific requirement.

This paper presents the art of on-stream particle size and elemental analysis used at iron ore concentrators, followed by the results and experiences from several sites.Online particle size analysis is rather common at medium- to large-sized concentrators. Online X-ray fluorescence (XRF) elemental analysis, however, is only used in some iron ore concentrators, while it is a routine practice in base metal concentrator plants. Online XRF analysis is applicable for process monitoring and control down to four to five per cent silica by measuring Fe assays accurately. With lower silica content, direct measurement of silica and other light elements is required. Some light element analysers that are based on the prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) method have been developed, but they have not performed up to expectations with slurry analysis. Other methods have been tried though these have not been used beyond prototype installations. Operating online light element slurry analyser installations are not common in iron ore applications.There is an economic incentive to mine lower and variable grade iron ore resources, which require concentration and removal of several impurities to produce high-quality concentrates for pellet production. Monitoring such operations by on-stream analysis has significant economic benefits, and there is a need to develop a dependable slurry online analyser for Si, Al, Mg and other light elements. The gold-scheelite-quartz lodes of the Wakamarina valley were the most productive of the mesothermal gold-bearing areas in the Marlborough Schist. Most of the production came from the Empire City and Golden Bar mines which worked the Golden Bar lode. Only 134 m of its 1800 m strike length are accessible, in the No.2 level of the Golden Bar Mine. A fault has downthrown the Golden Bar Mine section by = 47 m and displaced it left-laterally by 18 m. The lode is a typical ribbon-banded mesothermal vein, averaging c. 1.75 m wide, and enclosing narrow horses of schist country rock. It is composed of bands of milky æbuckÆ quartz with thin laminae of schist. Scheelite occurs in short strings of grains within quartz on the footwall side of the lode and also in small quartz-carbonate veinlets in the foot wall and hanging wall schist. The lode quartz contains only localised traces of pyrite and arsenopyrite. They are more abundant in the wall-rock schist.   The Golden Bar lode lies within a steeply dipping normal fault, which, on its footwall side, is adjacent to a 40 m-wide, shallow-dipping mylonite shear zone. Within 1 m of the lode, the shear foliation has been dragged down to nearly parallel the lode footwall. Wall rock alteration is manifested by a marked increase in K and Rb, which correlate with abundant illite/muscovite and K-feldspar within 2 m of the footwall of the lode. Amphibole, stilpnomelane, and pumpellyite show a progressive decrease towards the lode. As and Sb increase close to the lode, but are at background levels within the lode itself. Enhanced Cr (150-430 ppm) in the quartz, relative to the schists (~40 ppm), suggests that the source hydrothermal fluids passed through and leached mafic rocks, such as the metabasites from the hanging wall of the lode (~400 ppm Cr).

The uptake of zinc, lead, and copper by the flora of the Tui Base Mine area near Te Aroha is described.Vegetation and soil samples were taken from two traverses across the Raukaka Lode. Results. after statistical analysis, indicated that Beilschmiedia tawa was a suitable species for biogeochemical prospecting for lead and that SchefJlera digitata was satisfactory for zinc.The tawa showed a negative anomaly for lead over the vein itself but not over the adjacent dispersion halo. It was concluded that lead concentrations greater than 230 p.p.m. in the wood ash of the tawa and zinc concentrationsgreater than 540 p.p.m. in the leaf ash of S. digitata denoted threshold values for anomalous mineralization in the soil beneath. Although both species contained copper, neither indicated a soil anomaly for this element.

This paper describes results from a gender study for a new mine in Pajala, a small community in northern Sweden. Using a gender perspective, the study examines migration, education, local culture, the labour market, and work organisation as problems and opportunities in the regional context for the planned mine. The most obvious ‘gender issue’ for the Swedish mining industry is the very low percentage of employed women, which is even lower among mining workers. To recruit the best people, a company actively needs to attract both women and men; however, the mining companies find it difficult to recruit women as cultural, labour market and educational traditions as well as the mining companies’ own cultures often make it difficult for women to find work in the mining industry.The Torneå river valley, the region surrounding Pajala, has a gender-segregated labour market and gender-stereotyped culture and few young women live in this traditional and oldish region. Many young people leave the region and this is especially true for women. Compared to the rest of Sweden, there is a low educational level, especially among the men. In the mining companies, as in many other male homosocial workplaces, the workplace culture has strong connections to a certain type of traditional masculinity (laddishness, a kind of ‘macho-style’) and for a long time this has excluded women. ‘Gender’, however, is not only a question of recruiting women to a male-dominated industry. An organisation that discriminates according to gender can become inflexible, hindering communication, learning, innovations and change processes. In mining companies, this can manifest itself in hesitant attitudes among the miners about safety as well as organisational and technological development.This study found that companies establishing a presence in this region should develop a strategy for how to deal with and manage the risks and opportunities in the surrounding society (the regional culture) as well as inside the company (the mining culture). This need to be strategic will also be required of future mining companies as they will face higher demands on safety, gender equality, and technology to become modern, efficient and lean organisations.
