The process of grinding mill quality assurance brings with it associated truths and myths. When the mill quality assurance process took its first great steps forward in the late 1970s and early 1980s, they were in response to the conditions existing, in our industry, at those times. In the late 1990s, we are faced with different conditions, and problems, and need fresh solutions. Yet the system developed for the early 1980s has produced no new approaches for the late 1990s, becoming instead more hardened and entrenched. This lack of development and actual resistance to research is now costing the industry significant amounts of money in late start-ups and useless scrap loss.

Public-private partnership efforts are working to create green landscapes from abandoned industrial sites. Fabricated soils, potentially an essential element of such landscapes, are designed to substitute for topsoil on the areas free from ground cover and plant community. The aluminosilicate matrix and humus form the soil micelle - the primary unit of any soil complex. Humus formation is a process based on carbon-nitrogen interaction. Sources of carbon can be materials rich in easily composted products like cellulose and polyphenols (plant leaves) or aged lignin polymers (saw dust from different woody plants). The pathways of carbon-nitrogen complexes are discussed. Properties of the fabricated soil components were examined by bio-tests and plant models.

Since the mid-1970s, samples of airborne and waterborne fibrous particulates have been collected in the area of the Northshore Taconite Ore Processing Facility by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH), the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (PCA), and the University of Minnesota. Indirect sample preparation has consistently been used although other aspects of the sampling methods and sites have varied and analytical procedures were altered over time as more accurate and precise microscopy methods were developed (i.e., phase contrast optical microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy). In the mid-1970s, levels of airborne fibrous particulate in the Silver Bay area averaged from 0.00030 to 0.03 f/ml. This level was significantly greater than levels of similar particulates in the St. Paul, MN area, although two of the Silver Bay sampling sites, considered individually, did not indicate levels of fibrous particulate markedly different than that seen in St. Paul. More recent sampling data (i.e., 1990?2001) indicate mean concentration of airborne fibrous particulates (amphibole-like fibrous particulates) of 0.0020 f/ml with a range of values from 0.0001 to 0.0140 f/ml. Such levels are not significantly different from those seen in other non-urban environments in the US and Europe. Concentrations of fibrous particulates in water samples were higher in the mid-1970 when iron ore tailings were being deposited in Lake Superior, but since the tailings have been deposited on land waterborne levels of fibrous particulate in the Beaver River have remained relatively constant averaging in the range of 7.5 MFL. This level is only slightly in excess of the current EPA drinking water standard for fibrous particulates. Review and consideration of this data is important in determining the potential health risks associated with airborne and waterborne fibrous particulates in the areas of the Northshore Taconite Ore Processing Facility. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. Komatsu America International has introduced two new hydraulic excavators. They can work in congested and confined areas. The tight tail swing radius of the PC128US-2 and PC22-8USLC-2 enables the excavators to minimize the work space. The units can operate in confined work settings that are inaccessible or counterproductive to traditional machines. Even the door is designed for tight working conditions. A convex door slides open along the exterior curve of the cab, rather than swinging out on hinges past tracks. And the excavators’ tight tail swing design allows them to load within the track width of the machine.

There is an increasing requirement for mines to meet a certain minimum criteria for sustainability within the context of the physical environment, ecosystem and socio-economic system in which they are located. The mining industry has wrestled to develop methods for assessing the ‘sustainability’ value of a mining project and indicators of ‘sustainability success’. A methodology for the evaluation of sustainability of a mining project using the Multiple Accounts Analysis (MAA) system was developed. The MAA is a platform for engagement of stakeholders and for the assessment of site-specific alternatives based on both qualitative and quantitative indicators of success.

After the successful breakthrough at the end of 2006 of both TBMs into the multifunctional site Faido (MFS), in the middle of 2007 the two tunnel boring machines resumed the 12 km long section between Faido and Sedrun. In the roughly a 10 month interval both approximately 465 m long tunnel boring machines were partly dismantled, pushed through the 2.5 km long MFS, rebuilt for the new larger diameter of 9.5 m and reassembled to be ready for operation. In the rebuilding phase, improvements were made to the equipment, especially as a result of experience gained from the previous 14 km long drive in the section Bodio and taking into account the latest information regarding the upcoming 14 km section Faido. Both TBM drives are currently in the rock formations of the Lucomagno gneiss, which stretch over a section of 3.5 km from the MFS Faido to the predicted Piora Syncline. This section is divided into two fold axes of the Chièra Synform, where the Lucomagno gneiss pass from a sub-horizontal into vertical bedding. The drives, with current rock overburdens exceeding 1,500 m and, as known from the excavation phase of the MFS, in part highly disturbed rock formations, are characterized by the locally intense rock squeezing conditions with large convergences in the vicinity of the driving TBM as well as backwards due to the interaction of the two drives. High expenditure for the support measures, reduced driving performances together with extensive extra work associated with deadlines and increased costs are the result. In the paper the previous experience with the TBM drives in the section Faido and the challenges still awaiting us are presented and discussed.

The SDSU tunnel and underground station are the first of these type facilities to be constructed by the Metropolitan Transit Development Board. Because there is no previous experience, and because tunneling activities are associated with some risk, he MTDB has undertaken a very proactive and wide reaching program to identify and control risks during construction. Finally, because the tunneling activity and underground station is on the San Diego State University, MTDB is working closely with their staff to identify construction impacts and mitigation’s, and thus ensure a quality project for both agencies.

Introduction Chloride leaching of sulfidic ores has been known about for 100 years. It is recognized as a highly efficient process to produce concentrated leach solutions. Despite this, chloride leaching found little practical application until recently because of the highly corrosive nature of concentrated chloride solutions. This situation changed with the advent of modern construction materials such as GRP, polypropylene, butyl rubber, etc. And in the past 20 years, research has burgeoned in the area of chloride hydrometallurgy. The research impetus stemmed from the belief that chloride leaching can provide an alternative to smelters for treating conventional copper concentrates. In addition, chloride leaching was thought to be suitable for on-site refining of copper at small tonnage operations located in remote areas. And chloride leaching was seen as a logical choice for treating unusual or complex concentrates that smelters could not handle. Underpinning these beliefs is the attraction of chloride-based hydrometallurgical processes for sulfidic ores. Sulfur is liberated in the environmentally acceptable elemental form rather than as sulfur dioxide. Consequently, sulfidic copper ores have received much attention. A review of Edmiston in 1984 describes 12 chloride-based processes. All managed to progress past the "laboratory beaker" stage of evaluation. In nine of these processes, copper is recovered electrolytically. Key features of these processes are summarized in Table 1. Table 1 shows that the processes must include a copper solvent-extraction step. Only these processes produce a clean copper electrolyte capable, with no further refining, of directly producing high quality cathode copper. The ICI/Elkem process is the exception here. The rest of these processes use o-hydroxyaryloxime reagents for the solvent extraction of copper and are constrained by the performance of these reagents. This is governed by hydrogen ion concentration (Equation 1). The practical result is that only relatively dilute copper solutions can be treated (Canmet, Phelps Dodge), or careful pH control or adjustment is necessary (Minimet Recherche, B.H.A.S.). This negates one of the attractive features of chloride leaching - its ability to produce very concentrated copper solutions, up to 40-45 gl-1. [ ] In all four processes using o¬hydroxyaryloxime extractants, solvent extraction transfers the copper from the chloride to the sulfate medium. To minimize cross-contamination of the two anions, the loaded organic solvent has to be scrubbed to remove the chloride ion. This represents an additional complication in the solvent extraction circuit. And it

High-speed stirred milling is a relatively new method of grinding in the metalliferous process industries. However, it has been widely used in the industrial mineral field for more than 30 years. Many existing metallurgical operations are looking to maximize economic return from existing deposits this requires new thinking and technologies. The operating experience of two copper operations is discussed here to show the effect of the introduction of the Metso Stirred Media Detritor (SMD), a new type of high speed stirred mill. Both operations have derived significant metallurgical benefits from this new technology. The benefits and process difficulties are explained. The initial drive in high speed stirred milling technology was toward ultra fine grinding where the mill product has an 80 percent passing size of 15 µm (937mesh) or less. More recently, a number of installations have occurred in a more conventional regrind setting. Few conventional copper concentrators require such fine grinding to attain satisfactory copper grades and recoveries. So other advantages must be considered here rather than just the ability to grind fine with good power efficiency.

Conventional ground support in accordance with latest state-of-the-art considers proper preparation of geotechnical investigation, structural design, observation during construction and fair risk sharing documents. Depending on the ground, there are different means and methods, reflecting different experiences. The paper is presenting ground support concepts, as mostly used in Europe during the past three decades. It discusses the use of anchors as well as the use of steel arches respectively combinations. It also discusses different applications of plain shotcrete, respectively fibre reinforced shotcrete. As excavation sequence is a major input to create the ground arch, the paper discusses also criteria to create closed ring conditions. Finally deformation criteria will be presented with case histories in order to control stability of the structure.

Vast improvement in methods of design and analysis of the long- term stability of overburden above room and pillar mines is needed. Improved methods are vital for planning and land development and for prediction above existing, presently stable, room and pillar mines. As shown on the flow chart in [Figure 1], the assessment of the long-term stability is an integral part of the site investigation process regarding mitigation of surface damage effects. In Illinois, flat farmlands with subjacent coal reserves cover vast areas. In some of these areas high extraction of the underlying coal layer(s) may not be possible since the resulting surf ace subsidence combined with a pre-existing shallow water table would make the land too wet. Thus recovery of this coal might only be accomplished by room and pillar mining where the ground surface does not subside and the hydraulics of the overburden are not significantly affected.

"The close vicinity of mining companies to other sites that are used for commercial and residential purposes or to areas under conservation as well as the fact that the people become more and more sensitive to emissions have led to a negative attitude towards mining operations in the neighborhood. It is above all the use of drilling and blasting techniques that give rise to objections, in the course of which demands for more environmentally-friendly production methods have been voiced. It is in this context that production methods without the use of explosives are considered as an option. After all, the use of such production methods is the only alternative for some quarry operators. The question is what are the true benefits of these techniques and what is the relation between a possible improvement of the environmental effects on the one hand and the technological potential as well as the costs on the other. It is intended to assess the mining techniques for solid rock in their entirety. This paper will therefore look at the aspects for assessing mining techniques in the context of their environmental impact and the costs."

Introduction Precambrian shield terrains the world over are experiencing an unprecedented level of concerted exploration for lode gold deposits. Reasons for this include: • The increase in the price of gold (following 40 years at $1.13/g or $35 per oz) has transformed targets that were once unattractive into viable exploration propositions. • The relatively suppressed market for other metals produced from shields (base metals, nickel, iron, and uranium) has further focused exploration attention on gold. • The preeminence of gold production from rocks of early Precambrian age, as shown in Fig. 1. • The relatively high grade of gold in these mines (averaging about 10 Wt or 0.29 oz per st) permits profitable extraction even under depressed gold prices. A number of these mines have been in continuous operation for more than 50 years. • The recent discovery of the major Hemlo deposit, in well exposed rocks adjacent to the Trans Canada Highway, has had a world-wide impact. This demonstrates that a major new deposit can be found even in an accessible, well exposed area of a shield; gold mineralization is susceptible to rational exploration; and new target types for gold exploration exist. This paper reviews exploration activity for gold in shield terrains worldwide (Fig. 2), excluding Early Proterozoic paleoplacers of the Witwatersrand type. Emphasis is on the Archean, which is traditionally the most productive part of the Precambrian shields. There is also an emphasis on the Canadian shield (Fig. 3) because of its vast areal extent and exceptionally broad range of mineralization styles. Geological Approach A basic problem exists in gold exploration when compared to exploration for base metal massive sulfides that predominated during the 1960s and 1970s. Gold concentrations cannot usually be detected by airborne geophysical instruments. The majority of massive sulfide deposits were detected using airborne electromagnetic detectors and magnetometers. A full 75% of Canadian gold discoveries can be credited to surface prospecting. The percentage is even higher in other countries. This observation allows for great optimism for two reasons: • Large areas of shield terrain are obscured by either surficial deposits (glacial tills, clays, and desert sands) or deep surface weathering. This makes them inaccessible to prospectors. Logic dictates that such obscured areas should have the same potential for gold concentration as has exposed bedrock. • The Hemlo style of mineralization, a roughly tabular ore body where gold is associated with disseminated sulfides, is different from the traditional prospecting target. The NC State University Minerals Research Laboratory (MRL) and Waste Reduction Partners (WRP) of the Land of Sky Regional Council joined efforts in 2000 to initiate a technically sound and practical program for the management of high-volume coal combustion by-products (CCBs) in North Carolina. The accumulation of CCBs from coal burning boilers throughout the state of North Carolina posed a substantial storage problem, and the area was overripe for an effective management program, which would be environmentally sustainable. In particular, the public utility generators had filled storage ponds on their properties, and the storage overload had grown to critical proportions. Much the same situation existed for paper mill biosolids, which were stored on site in landfill cells along with daily output of CCBs from the mill boilers. A conversion process via the patented pyro-process12 (US Patent No. 5,342,442) to produce synthetic light weight aggregates (LWA) from CCBs and paper mill sludge was conceived to process large quantities of both these waste materials. MRL and WRP initiated and formed a consortium that brought together academia, private industry and state agencies to evaluate the production of LWA by the pyro-process. The industry partners included representatives from the power companies, industrial ash generators, expediters for coal ash products, as well as concrete block manufacturers. It was important to welcome interested parties from not only the western North Carolina area and other parts of the state but also from neighboring states including Tennessee, South Carolina and Georgia. Membership of this consortium evolved during the intervening years to include the following participants and supporters: Progress Energy Carolinas; Duke Energy; Santee Cooper; Full Circle Solutions; Land-of-Sky Regional Council; NC Department of Pollution Prevention and Environmental Assistance; Ecusta Business Development Center; Blue Ridge Paper Products; Jackson Paper and Manufacturing Company; Miller Perlite; Appalachian Products; General Shale Brick; Metromont Materials; Small Business Technology Development Center of the University of North Carolina system and North Carolina State University The initial development program conducted at the Minerals Research Laboratory (MRL) was to formulate an acceptable LWA product, which fulfilled user specifications for light weight concrete block and structural concrete application. Support work and program coordination efforts were furnished by retired technical volunteers in WRP. The work advanced steadily, using proven technologies well established in the mineral industry, to generate a very satisfactory LWA. The consortium then concluded that a more comprehensive CCB conversion program would have more appeal for full scale manufacture and commercialization, if a variety of products from CCB separation were generated. This product assortment would include bottom ash, low carbon fly ash, recovered carbon of high purity, as well as the synthetic LWA. The bottom ash would serve the concrete block market, the fly ash was in demand for ready-mix concrete, and the high carbon product could be pelletized and used as a fuel for reburn or by the steel industry, and the LWA was a sought-after component for light weight concrete applications. After scouting all these potential markets and finding them to be viable, the consortium then inaugurated an integrated pilot plant program for the CCB separation and conversion. The plan was organized in three (3) parts: (1) Phase I ? bench scale evaluation studies (2) Phase II continuous pilot plant evaluation and (3) Phase III ? conceptual commercial plant design including marketing efforts and attraction of business entrepreneurs to build a full scale manufacturing plant. Phase II would serve to validate the process in a continuous mode and produce substantial quantities of products for preliminary marketing efforts and for demonstration-of-use purposes. The consortium agreed to the name, CAROLINA ASH PRODUCTS, (CAP), for the integrated pilot plant program. The products generated might be designated with the CAP label as: bottom ash would be named CAP Granules, low carbon fly ash would become CAP Ash, recovered high carbon product would be CAP Carbon, and LWA would have the name CAP Stone. Phase II of the program processed 20 tons (18 t) of ponded ash from Progress Energy storage at a rate of 600 lb (271 kg) of raw ash per hour with favorable results. PRELIMINARY STUDIES Prior to committing laboratory research and development effort as well as support and coordination activities to this program, it was necessary to determine (1) the level of need for a freshly launched CCB reutilization program in this state and (2) what degree of versatility was necessary for such a process. State agency records and a survey of recent boiler operations indicated that in the state of North Carolina at least 77 facilities manage CCBs from their boiler operations. Despite continuing development efforts in more eastern parts of the state, the use of CCBs for commercial applications has not increased to a level which alleviates the need to store vast quantities in private monofills on the generator?s property. More than 1.25 million tons (1.13 million t) of CCBs are landfilled in NC annually, with 300,000 tons (271,985 t) per year generated in western NC alone. Many different boiler types, which span both very old units and those that are modern and efficient, were to be found. These included stoker-fired units, pulverized coal boilers, slag-tap furnaces, and fluidized bed combustion boilers covering a range of sizes. Any systems designed to separate CCB components from all these sources and convert them to useful secondary products would need broad processing latitude and flexibility. Up to the present there has been a paucity of research done in the western part of the state to find productive alternatives to storage in landfills. With tipping fees in our largest landfill now approaching $40 per ton ($44 per t) and escalating transportation fees (about $200 per truckload up to 40 tons, traveling a distance of 25 miles), the problem has become urgent both economically and ecologically. A well-designed, integrated wet process for CCB separation into value-added products had much potential to be less expensive than landfilling as well as to provide saleable materials with acceptable profit margins. These preliminary investigations also revealed that other major waste streams, in particular paper mill sludge and municipal and animal waste biosolids were important candidates for priority attention. Since these biosolids could furnish the organic component of a synthetic LWA product, they could be consumed as part of the same program. This added interest value to a growing list of partners to support and participate in the program.

Numerical modeling was used to design the pillars and bolting plan for a mine with weak roof and multi-seam stress condition. Previous mining experience, pillar/roof yielding and in-situ horizontal stress were considered in the models. By modeling the upper seam yielding and vertical stress transfer, a multi-seam influence zone was obtained. Appropriate pillar sizes were designed for conditions with and without upper seam stress influences. Roof support for the track and belt entries, using fully-grouted resin bolts and cable bolts, was proposed and implemented in the model. The bolting plan was evaluated under the weak roof condition.

Following a successful investigation on the Central Zone sample, a cyanidation study was conducted on an ore sample from the AD-MW Zone of Clarence Stream Property, owned by Freewest Resources Canada, to develop a leaching strategy to extract gold. At a grade of 6.48 g/t, gold is present in the forms of aurostibite, free gold and electrum. The ore contains 4.3% berthierite/gudmundite, 1.3% pyrrhotite, 0.7% pyrite, 0.07% stibnite and 0.9% arsenopyrite. Similar to the Central Zone, the extraction of gold from the AD-MW Zone can be performed at atmospheric pressure, pH 10.5 and with a low concentration of cyanide. The grind size had no effect on gold extraction between a P80 of 28 to 71 µm. The oxygen and cyanide requirement significantly increased with a ?ner grind. Consequently, a very close control of cyanide addition is required to minimize passivation of gold. Lead nitrate, added in the pretreatment, increased the extraction of gold by 2.3%. Leaching at pH < 10 improved gold extraction but increased the cyanide consumption by 5%. Passivation of gold occurred when the pretreatment was longer than 2 hours. A longer pretreatment reduced the cyanide consumption by 5%. Mineralogical characterization of the leach residue with no gravity pretreatment prior to leaching indicated the presence of unleached gold grains and passivated gold grains. Removal of coarse gold by gravity increased the extraction by 2.8% (leach residue at 0.74 g/t Au). Increasing the DO to 16 ppm or the lead nitrate from 500 to 1,000 g/t increased the overall gold extraction to 90.4% (leach residue at 0.62 g/t), which is the maximum gold extraction obtained. The leaching parameters were 800 ppm NaCN, DO 16 ppm and pH 10.5 for a duration of 120 hours. The associated cyanide consumption was 4.0 kg/t. Gold leaching was not sensitive to cyanide concentration. Reducing the cyanide concentration to 250 ppm resulted in a gold extraction of 89.5% with a cyanide consumption of 2.6 kg/t.

At Fermilab, located in Batavia, Illinois, a 4,000-foot underground complex of tunnels and caverns is being excavated on a decline of six percent, at depths of up to350 ft, below grade. The site geology consists of dolomitic and shale formations overlain by glacial till. Since the start of construction in March 2000, work to date has concentrated on the excavation and support of the Target Hall cavern, which is characterized by a low rock cover and a final lining of shotcrete. Ground vibrations, noise levels, and rock movement were monitored during excavation by drill and blast methods to prevent damage to experimental facilities, impacts on surrounding communities, and to allow evaluation of cavern performance. The cavern design was based on a UDEC numerical analysis that was validated during construction by comparison to encountered conditions and measured cavern movements.

Several candidate sites have been proposed for the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL), a facility that would provide over 2000 meters of overburden to screen out cosmic rays that would otherwise interfere with experiments. Types of anticipated experiments include: detection of dark matter and stellar neutrinos, and evaluation of deep microbial life forms. Engineering experiments might include more refined scanning devices to “see” rock defects ahead of tunneling, improved predictive models for groundwater inflows and tunnel support requirements, and improved instrumentation for monitoring in-situ stresses, rock deformations, and pore water pressures. Spin-offs from this research might include more sensitive security detectors for scrutinizing shipping containers, new drugs based on new microbes, and improved sensor systems for tunneling. A site near Leavenworth, WA, was assessed and shown to have numerous topographic and geotechnical advantages. Rock cover is on the order of 2250 meters. The granitic bedrock is suitable for tunneling a variety of large underground openings.

Asking the question, “What do the world’s leading corporations and cutting-edge practitioners of sustainability put forth to guide a given mine site for planning and action toward ‘sustainability’?”, this paper explores the spectrum of methodologies and mindsets in available literature, then constructs an example for the large near-closure facility at Kennecott Utah Copper. Values, opportunities and constraints spring from physical, unutilized byproducts, from critical ecosystems and wildlife populations, from location relative to those ecosystems and proximate communities, and from the political will to perform adequate feasibility investigations. Patience, determination and thoroughness are imperative. Identifying most productive and, simultaneously, most protective and restorative, practical methods to approach ‘sustainability’ has become a central mission of industry and business, worldwide. A survey of recent international initiatives finds no single approach that establishes either a readily adaptable methodology or an appropriate set of ‘attention’ points, or agenda, to guide individual mining operations at specific locations toward the elusive but essential goal of ‘sustainable’ mining. Untying this convoluted knot of contending factors requires willingness to recognize and work within ecological constraints for community long-term needs. Occasionally, the task requires the sword of Alexander the Great. Through integration that is unflinchingly honest ethically, culturally, economically, ecologically and scientifically, fully cognizant of place and community at whatever scales are of greatest significance, and integrative of both problem-response and opportunity, we may envision a mineral extraction and beneficiation future that achieves the best, most nearly sustainable, results possible. Industrial ecology (IE), with its clear emphasis on community, ecosystems, and sustainable economic stimulation, presents a sufficiently broad and adaptable discipline to facilitate planning and management toward sustainable mining. The creation of sustainable jobs encapsulates IE’s analogy to the niche survival strategies of organisms in nature. Open to common-sense recognition of faults and opportunities at appropriate scales, IE is less a discipline or prescribed methodology than a mindset, willing to be rigorously scientific when science is imperative, but also willing to exercise “art” when creativity or community engagement are needed. IE is also capable of future-looking compassion for peoples and nature. Looking beyond what has occurred to date, the case of Kennecott Utah Copper provides ample illustration of possibilities for community economic development, environmental management, and significant initiatives beneficial at regional and planetary scales, to become recognizable as deserving of the label, ‘sustainable.’ Through what this researcher terms “whole mine, whole region, whole planet” thinking, strategies become visible and subject to serious consideration, presenting a path to best possible accomplishment in mining. Constituting a maximal broadening of mining’s “traditional” scope, the integrative approach proposed here is the ‘paradigm shift’ being made by many other industries around the world. In aggregate, these steps are the only hope for avoidance of environmental, social and economic risks that threaten to curtail resource development and impair mining companies’ ‘social license to operate.’
