Estimated natural zeolite production worldwide during 2004 remained at about 3.6 Mt (4 million st), about the same as in 2003. China continues to be the largest producer of natural zeolites followed by Cuba, Germany, Japan and South Korea. This may be changing, however. Since 1988, zeolite production from Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines and Thailand has increased rapidly. Most of the production is consumed in aqua culture. Global demand for seafood has exceeded the ability of the oceans to supply it without over fishing. Zeolite minerals remove ammonia compounds from the ponds in which fish and shrimp are grown. It is estimated that, in Thailand and Indonesia more than 55,000 farms produce260 kt (286,500 st) of shrimp. Therefore, as shrimp production increases, so does zeolite consumption.

The use of statistical design to optimize deinking process design has been studied for the flotation deinking of newspapers. The interactions of two variables are often important in determining flotation deinking efficiency. The interactions can be synergistic or antagonistic. These interactions would not be discovered using the traditional method of varying one parameter and holding the other variables constant. An experiment design in which two or more process parameters are varied simultaneously is required to identify these interactions. A considerable number of conclusions could be drawn about the relative importance of process variables on ink particle size distribution, ink removal efficiency, and flotation yield loss in a flotation deinking process. However, these findings could be influenced by the deinking surfactant and the ink chemistry.

Coal mine ground control is the science of the application of rock mechanics principles to coal mining operations. More acceptance of ground control techniques by the US coal mining industry has been seen in the 1980s. It has been demonstrated many times that a proper ground control design is key to a successful coal mining operation. However, numerous in-mine applications of various ground control techniques by the author indicate that cur¬rent techniques need improvement. The biggest problem in coal mine ground control is that miners are dealing with materials of rapidly varying properties and occurrence. And only the exposed surface can be identified positively. Thus, in attempting to solve the ground control problems, many unknown factors are assumed. Some of these problems deriving from such assumptions are discussed here. Coal pillars There are two types of coal pillars - barrier and chain pillars - depending on the purpose. Barrier pillars are those located between panels or sections or mines. Their objective is to isolate the mined-out effects of one from the other. Chain pillars are characteristic of room-and-pillar mining. They are designed to support the overburden load and protect the surrounding entries and crosscuts. Pillar design is the most popular and, frequently, the only ground control technique employed by coal operators for mine design. There are many pillar design formulae available (Bieniawski, 1983; Peng, 1986). Nearly all consider both size and width/height effects. Specifically, pillar strength decreases with increases in pillar size and increases with increase in the ratio of width to height. However, the manner of those changes varies with investigators. Consequently, the pillar size determined varies considerably from investigator to investigator. And the variation grows much more pronounced as the seam depth increases (Fig. 1). The question, then, is which one should be used? One may say each formula is developed for a particular coalfield. A particular formula may have been used to design a pillar, which has not failed. Does that mean it was over designed? Not necessarily, because no one can confirm its stated "safety factor." Recent case studies (Peng, 1986; Tang and Peng, 1988) show that all pillar formulae are too conservative for chain pillar design in room-and-pillar mines due to the following two problems: • Uncertainty about in situ pillar strength. All formulae employ uniaxial compressive strength of selected samples tested in the laboratory and scaled to that for underground pillars. The scaling factors are not well proven. In situ testings by Bieniawski (1969) suggested that 1.5 m (5 ft) pillars are representative of in situ pillars that, after being tested in various US coal mines, are not universally applicable. • Uncertainty about the actual loading on the pillar. The most frequently used tributary loading theory defines the loading as total overburden weight tributary to each pillar (from roofline to surface). This is too conservative when it applies to coal measure rocks. The overburden consists of layered strata of different stiffness. Many stiffer strata will self-support over small roof spans. Depending on the location of these strata above the coal seam, it will reduce pillar loading in various proportions. It follows that total structural analysis using, for instance, finite element method is more appropriate. It can take into account the interaction of roof and floor strata with coal. The Metals Mining Sector of the Acid Drainage Technology Initiative (ADTI-MMS) addresses technical drainage-quality issues related to metal mining and related metallurgical operations, for future and active mines, as well as, for historical mines and mining districts. One of the first projects of ADTI-MMS is to develop a handbook describing the best sampling, monitoring, predicting, mitigating, and modeling of drainage from metal mines, pit lakes and related metallurgical facilities based upon current scientific and engineering practices. One of the important aspects of planning a new mine in today’s regulatory environment is the philosophy of designing a new or existing mine or expansion of operations for ultimate closure. The holistic philosophy taken in the ADTI-MMS handbook maintains that sampling and monitoring programs should be designed to take into account all aspects of the mine-life cycle. Data required for the closure of the operation are obtained throughout the mine-life cycle, from exploration through post-closure.

A computerized "Decision Support System" was used to evaluate an "Underground Platform Approach to Oil Recovery". Over a billion calculations were required to model the mine layouts; learning curves for shaft, tunnel, and well drilling scenarios; detailed cost, schedule, and resource data; complex oil production and material balance data; varying reservoir parameters; and complex oil pricing curves. Simplified "optimum" solutions were defined in terms of muck hoisting capacity, barrels of oil per day, and present worth. Complex "optimum" solutions were defined in terms of minimal exposure scenarios during development followed by shortest time to full production.

An experimental system has been designed to monitor on-line variations of leaching parameters in a closed circuit of cyanide leaching solutions and gold bearing ores. Experiments performed to deter-mine variations in some important leaching parameters of the solution: pH, dissolved oxygen, free cyanide, oxidation/reduction potential, gold content, temperature, pressure and solution chemistry. By comparing results obtained when the leaching solution is allowed to become acid or kept basic, it was possible to infer the chemical reactions that occurred between the solution and the ores.

Effects of the August 1995 failure of the Omai tailings dam in Guyana continue to be felt throughout the mining industry. This article is taken from the final report of the independent body of experts commissioned by the government of Guyana to establish the cause of the failure. It explains what happened, why and how to avoid it in the future. Despite environmental, health and safety effects that were negligible by any objective measure, the failure has received wide international attention. Coming on the heels of the shift in exploration targets and development opportunities to developing countries, it has intensified interest in tailings dam safety and environmental management issues. An informed understanding of the nature of the failure and its effects is key to responding to these concerns.

Many appraisers/valuers believe that the only valuation method available within the Cost Approach category for Real Property appraisal is the depreciated replacement cost method. Some valuation and financial reporting standards setters also believe the same. This paper introduces the minerals appraiser to a number of useful methods for mineral property appraisal that are based primarily on the principle of contribution to value, the predominant economic principle in the cost approach. Most of these cost approach methods discussed are primarily for use in valuation of exploration tracts and resource properties that have no defined reserves. However, the powerful rural cost method can be used to calculate the contribution of categories of resources, reserves, and other property components to the value of a mineral property. This method can be applied to mineral properties at all stages of development, including producing properties.

Laboratory testing was carried out to evaluate several devices for recovering clean coal from bituminous coal refuse material. The bulk of the testing focused on using a dense-medium cyclone to process -0.6-mm refuse material. A hindered-settling column and a spiral concentrator were also used to process 1.2x0.15-mm material. Product yields and ash contents were obtained for all tests, while partition curves were generated for selected tests from which the characteristic performance parameters (relative density of separation and probable error) were determined. The results indicated that the dense-medium cyclone was capable of cleaning down to 0.037 mm, while the other devices were effective to 0.15 mm.

Heightened environmental consciousness has resulted in the development of various international accords dealing with natural resource management. This international awareness is now being translated into regional and local initiatives that proactively implement collaborative environmental management programs. One such program was recently initiated in northern Chile in recognition of the interconnection of Andean salars. Cooperative efforts between industry, governmental agencies and academic professionals have resulted in the implementation of simultaneous environmental monitoring of flora and fauna in the salars of northern Chile. This coordinated effort is leading to an improved understanding of the migratory patterns of South American fauna, as well as improved access to an expanded database for the multiple user groups associated with the Andean salars. The El Abra Mine is actively participating in these coordinated monitoring efforts.

The Andacollo gold mine is located near the town of Andacollo (population 14,000 people) in Chile’s region four. It is about 56km (35 miles) by paved road from the coastal city of La Serena. Santiago is about480 km (300 miles) south. Site elevation varies between 1,000 and 1,280 m(3,300 and 4,200 ft). The climate at the Andacollo site is moderate but arid. Average annual rainfall is only 130mm (5 in.). Because there is little rain and the temperature varies only a few degrees (14 to 24 C or 57 to 75F), there are no problems with freezing, solution dilution or pad saturation. The climatic conditions are ideal for heap leaching.

Arsenic-gold bearing ores are used as a flux in smelting or leached out to extract gold. To decrease arsenic content in processed materials and to break up the lattice to free the gold, raw materials are roasted. This article analyses the results of laboratory and pilot testing of dissociating and oxidizing roasting of gold-arsenic bearing concentrates. During the dissociation roasting under vacuum arsenic is sublimated into elemental and sulfide forms. The process allows to minimize the negative influence on the environment but requires costly engineering solutions. Roasting in a neutral medium or with limited quantity of oxygen in the gaseous phase makes it possible to sublimate arsenic in the form of oxides and sulfides and may be carried out in the autogeneous mode in fluid bed furnaces. If oxidizing roasting of the concentrates is done in the presence of soda, practically all arsenic and sulfur form water-soluble compounds and remain in cinder.

To accommodate growth in air service and to follow the Master Plan for long-term airport development, the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority established thed2 Development Program at Washington Dulles International Airport. A sub-surface Automated People Mover (APM) System is under construction to replace the Mobile Lounges as the primary people mover system at Dulles. To minimize disruption to airport operations the majority of the APM System’s crossings of Taxi lanes will be undertaken using Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) or the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). This paper explores the planning and design of these shallow tunnel segments for future generation aircraft loads, within the constraints of minimal construction access under post 9/11 security requirements and the context of the overall airport expansion program.

Diethylenetriamine (DETA) is known to be an effective pyrrhotite depressant in pentlandite flotation. It has been reported recently that its performance becomes more consistent when the reagent is used in conjunction with sulfur dioxide (SO2). In the present investigation, the effects of DETA and SO32- ions on the changes in the hydrophobicity of pyrrhotite electrode have been studied at pH 6.8. The results show that both DETA and SO32- can reduce the water contact angles of pyrrhotite; however, the contact angles can be reduced to zero only in the presence of the SO32- ions. This finding may be attributed to the ability of the SO32- ions to reduce the polysulfides formed on pyrrhotite by superficial oxidation, which may in turn provides an explanation for the robust performance of DETA/SO2 combination.

Low-rank/oxidized coals respond poorly to oil agglomeration. Emulsification of kerosene in the presence of surfactants dramatically reduces the size of the kerosene droplets. While this dramatically reduces the amount of oil that is required for efficient agglomeration (down to 0.25-0.5%), more importantly, the surfactants entirely change the electrokinetic properties of the oil droplets and thus the interaction between oil droplets and coal particles. Consequently, kerosene cationic emulsions can efficiently agglomerate oxidized coal particles. The agglomerates obtained in such a process can still be recovered by screening. Surfactants can affect fine coal filtration very profoundly when used to emulsify the oil which is utilized to agglomerate coal prior to its filtration. This sequence is much more logical than the use of flocculants - highly hydrophilic polymers - as filtration additives to aid dewatering of flotation concentrates. Although such polymers flocculate coal particles, they also render coal surfaces hydrophilic and make reduction of the cake moisture content difficult.

In the Canadian mining industry, there are at present no comprehensive regulations or standards for valuation of mineral properties. In January 1999, the Mining Standards Task Force of the Toronto Stock Exchange and the Ontario Securities Commission recommended that the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) establish a committee to review and advise on approaches and methodologies for the valuation of mineral properties. The authors were subsequently appointed Co-chairs of the CIM Special Committee on Valuation of Mineral Properties (CIMVal). A committee of experts from the mining industry, consulting, financial and legal communities was established with the task of reviewing available information, investigating various valuation methodologies and practices, soliciting input from interested parties, and recommending a Canadian code or standards plus guidelines for the valuation of mineral properties. As an initial stage of its work, the CIMVal Committee organized a one day session at the Mining Millennium 2000 Convention in Toronto in March 2000 on valuation of mineral properties. The 10 invited papers have been published by CIM. As a second stage, CIMVal has requested input and comments from all interested parties. The next stage will be to prepare a preliminary draft with a recommended code or standards and guidelines. This will be circulated for further input and comments prior to revision and publication of another draft. The final CIMVal report should be completed in early 2001. A variety of methods are in common usage for the valuation of mineral properties, depending on the stage of development of the property, the data available and the experience of the valuator. For example, the discounted cash flow method is commonly used for properties in production or at the feasibility stage, but is not generally considered appropriate for exploration properties. Market approaches such as comparable transactions are in wide general use, and various cost approaches are used for exploration properties. The option pricing approach has promise for valuation of marginal properties, but is not commonly used.

The gold mining and ore processing operations of Minera Yanacocha S.A. are 10cated in an area 4,000 meters above sea level in the Peruvian Andes same 600 km north of Lima and 20 km north of Cajamarca. The joint venture partners are Newmont Second Capital (USA); Compania Minera Condesa (Peril); Mine Or (France) and the IFC. Newmont manages the operation. The Yanacocha district comprises several areas with mineralization evidence. The first ore with minable reserves of 28 million tonnes of ore assaying about 1.4 gpt Au is called Carachugo and is being mined and treated at the rate of 14,000 tonnes of ore per day by open pit mining methods. ROM ore is dump leached and the gold recovered in a Merrill Crowe plant. The plant design incorporates some unusual considerations to overcome the problems of the high rainfall in this area and assure the protection of the environment.
