OCI Wyoming mines two flat-lying trona seams that are 3- to 3.5-m- (10- to 11.5-ft-) thick, about10 m (33 ft) apart and 250-m- (820-ft-) deep at its Big Island Mine in Wyoming. Continuous miners and a yielding-pillar system have contributed to improvements in resource recovery and productivity. The use of yield pillars minimizes the stresses transmitted from the upper to the lower seam. However, yielding must not impact the good, long-term stability needed to prevent subsidence for a large portion of the mine beneath the Green River channel.

Ground characterized by hard boulders embedded in soft matrix represents one of the most challenging conditions for TBMs, as the cutterhead must cope with the non-optimal conditions of cutting hard blocks while simultaneously excavating through soft, soil-like matrix material. Dowden and Robinson (2001) and Hunt and Mazhar (2004) summarize several case histories relating to the problems of advancing a TBM through boulder-laden ground and provide guidance with respect to appropriate site investigations and baselining strategies. Some rock types constituting boulder-laden ground include: ?Sedimentary Rocks?cemented alluvial channel deposits, colluvium/talus, landslide debris, and glacial till. ?Igneous Rocks?agglomerates, lahars, and pyroclastic deposits. ?Metamorphic Rocks?tectonic mélange and cataclastic fault zones. ?Decomposed Rocks?corestone bearing saprolites. Disc cutters are commonly utilized to cut the hardblocks; however, as compared to the understanding of disc cutter behavior in hard continuous rocks, little is known regarding fundamental cutting mechanisms in highly heterogeneous bouldery ground conditions. To advance this understanding, a suite of full scale tests have been performed using a linear cutting machine at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM). This paper summarizes the observed cutting mechanisms and their practical implications for TBM excavations through boulder-laden ground.

Slope monitoring has been an important issue in static terrestrial lidar for some time. Several solutions for monitoring the progress of a slide have been devised over the years. All of these solutions have required users to be in the field operating the lidar equipment. This paper presents a new system developed using the Optech ILRIS-HD or ILRIS-LR lidar and the scripting language of PolyWorks to produce an autonomous slope monitoring system. This system has proven invaluable in detecting and alerting mine workers to potential danger within their mine sites. It has already been deployed in two mine sites and is scheduled to be installed at a third.

On June 25, 1999, BHP Billiton (BHPB) announced the suspension of operations at the BHP Copper Inc.(BHP) San Manuel copper mine in Pinal County, Arizona. Subsequent to this announcement, BHPB aggressively pursued a number of alternatives for the underground mine and open pit facilities, including continued curtailed operations, sale to a qualified mining operator and closure of the property. After consideration of these various alternatives over a 2.5-year period, BHPB announced final closure of the mine site on January 15, 2002.This paper describes how the BHPB charter and HSEC policy apply during the closure process.

An extensive programme of ground instrumentation and observation was carried out for the West Duff in Outfall Sewer tunnel project prior to and during construction, to establish the performance characteristics of the rock through which the tunnel and appurtenant openings were dug and to examine the nature of the lining-to-ground interaction. The existence of high horizontal residual ground stresses was confirmed, and values established by overcoring. Rock deformations and stress changes were monitored during tunnelling. Permanent stress and strain monitoring devices were set into the final lining and these are continuing to operate. INTRODUCTION The site is located on the north shore of Lake Ontario at Pickering, some 20 miles (32 kilometres) east of Toronto, Canada where a variable thickness of glacial or interglacial sediments overlies bituminous shale bedrock of. the Collingwood Formation which is lower Ordovician age. Approximately 50 feet (15 metres) of glacial cover exists at the shaft, though this thins abruptly at the regressing cliffed shoreline such that several small areas of exposed bedrock exist in the lakebed. The general location, overall geological section and detailed site plan and profile are illustrated in Figs.1,2 and 3 respectively. General properties of the rock as established during an extensive test drilling and site investigation programme are listed in Table 1, while stress determination by USER overcoring stress meter device are given in Table ll. These data formed the basis of analyses which were done to examine the intended outfall design, and to detail the construction procedure and the observational instrumentation programme.

Vertical circular shafts have been proposed for multiple access to high level nuclear waste deep geologic repositories. Shaft construction is a critical path item in the commissioning of a repository. Other constraints on the shaft design and construction criteria include the lack of design precedence for long term performance and the importance of minimizing rock and groundwater disturbance. A comparative evaluation of conventional and mechanized shaft sinking techniques is presented in the context of the particular geologic and design constraints. Technical and non-technical factors for blind drilling, blind boring, raise-reaming, drill-and-blast and ream-and slash methods are reviewed for typically "hard rock" and "salt" type repository sites. Appropriate shaft designs are developed, the suitability of each method to the particular requirements evaluated and construction costs and schedules determined. The explicit appraisal of the significant design factors for each method serves as a rational basis for the preliminary selection of the most suitable sinking technique for a particular set of site/design conditions.

The Toulon South Tunnel in France is the second part of a project started 20 years ago. After the problems and delays suffered during the construction of the North Tunnel, due to a complex geologic context of highly fractured and soft rocks under a highly urbanized environment, a very dense automatic monitoring system was implemented to control the settlements of surface (more than 1000 points), the structures adjacent to the tunnel alignment and the underground galleries being constructed. The latest automatic instrumentation systems were installed, using for example AMTS capabilities in terms of ?automatic prismless settlement monitoring?. All the data (geotechnical, structural and geological) was gathered in a global automatic data acquisition system and continuously available on a web based interface. Three different threshold levels (notification, anomaly, alert) were set up, each one with a differential and an absolute value for settlements. Depending on the actual geological site conditions and the actual monitored settlements, different supporting systems and excavation techniques were used. Furthermore, the monitoring data was also used to predict and anticipate the future settlement, by comparing it continuously with the theoretical Peck settlement curves. This method allowed a better risk management by limiting the settlement on existing structures and helped to secure the Works progress schedule, for a project that lasts from July 2007 to March 2011. The implementation of this observational method application is presented in this paper.

Concrete is a mixture of a fine aggregate (sand), a coarse aggregate (gravel), cement, and water. Cement itself is the most expensive of the ingredients but generally amounts to only about 10% of the concrete mixture. Cement raw materials include calcium, alumina, iron oxide, silica, and gypsum. They are heated and chemically changed into clinker "minerals," which are then ground and shipped as cement. Each of the four main clinker minerals-tricalcium silicate, dicalcium silicate, tricalcium aluminate, and tetracalcium aluminoferrite-impart specific strength and compositional properties to the final concrete product. During hydration of the cement, chemical changes produce new minerals that include calcium silicate hydrate gel (C-S-H, the main constituent of hydrated cement paste), calcium hydroxide, and calcium, sodium, potassium, and sulfate ions, among others. Two main reactions can occur that may be deleterious to concrete. Normal cement pore solutions, in a hydrated cement, contain sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide. If these alkali concentrations are too high, they can react with the siliceous aggregate (alkali-silica reaction, or ASR) to form an alkali-rich calcium silicate hydrate gel (C-N+K-S-H), which, upon prolonged contact with water, can expand to crack the concrete. The other deleterious reaction occurs when the mineral ettringite (Ca6A12(S04)3OH12. 26H20) forms after the concrete is hardened (delayed ettringite formation) and cracks the concrete. Many of the concrete bridges and structures built in New Mexico in the past 20 years are in need of replacement due to deterioration. Many others constructed very early on in the century are still sound. By collecting and analyzing samples of both old and new concrete and good and bad concrete, we compared their differences on both a microscopic and macroscopic scale. Samples taken from concrete sidewalks, parking lots, drainage canals, spillways, and a railroad-trestle foundation have construction dates that range from 1923 to 1997. They were analyzed by electron microprobe and by petrographic microscopy. Cracks, air voids, and aggregate alteration were primary locations for investigation and analysis. Using the electron microprobe, ettringite was found in voids of most of the samples, both in good and bad concrete. This leads us to believe that ettringite formation is not causing distress in the concrete. There was one exception in which ettringite was found lining a crack. In this instance, ettringite may have the ability to further the cracking and cause distress. No alkali-silica gel was identified with the microprobe. Using the petrographic microscope in cross-polarized light, a light-brown material was observed that lined some of the air voids and cracks; however, exact mineralogic identifications were not made. Although many instances of chalcedony and other deleterious quartz phases were found, no clear evidence of ASR-gel deterioration was present in our samples using these methods. However, positive identification of the ASR gel was made on an in-place concrete near one of our sample sites and in several sample cores using a newly developed chemical test for the soluble potassium ions associated with the gel. The chemical used in this test is sodium cobaltinitrite, Na3Co(NO2)6.

Since Reserve Mining Co. began commercial operations at Silver Bay, MN, some 25 years ago, major improvements in taconite processing technology have become available. In addition, significant new government standards have been imposed on industrial operations. By implementing a $370-million modernization program, Reserve was able to accomplish two major company objectives: the quality of concentrates produced from the Peter Mitchell mine has improved, and the operation meets both present and foreseeable environmental standards. Process modifications at Reserve were designed to: •Reduce the pellet silica content from 9% to 5%; •Increase the pellet iron content from 62.5% to 65.8%; •Implement a tailings disposal system utilizing "best available technology" water quality controls; and •Reduce air emissions by installing "best available technology" air emission controls. By adding dry cobbing, fine screening, and flotation to the concentrating process, pellet silica content has been reduced; the process reclaims and reuses all process waters; all tailings are stored in a zero discharge tailings basin; and all air emission standards are being met. Initial Beneficiation at Silver Bay Reserve's Peter Mitchell mine at Babbitt, MN, is on the eastern end of the Biwabik iron formation. The open-pit mine is approximately 16 km long, 0.8 km wide, and presently has a maximum depth of about 50 m. Principal constituents of the ore body are magnetite, quartz, and iron-magnesium silicates. The company's large commercial plant began operating at Silver Bay, 75 rail km from the mine, in 1955. Facilities have historically had the capacity to process 31.5 Mt/a of taconite, containing an average 24% magnetic iron, into 11 Mt/a of iron ore pellets. Reserve's initial beneficiation process-which existed up to early 1979-consisted of two crushing stages at the Babbitt mine site, two additional crushing and screening stages at Silver Bay, grinding in a conventional rod-ball¬regrind mill circuit, size classification with cyclones, and concentration with magnetic and hydraulic separators. Concentrate produced by that circuit assayed 65% iron and 8.5% silica, with a screen analysis of 94% -44 µm, and a surface area of 9300 cm2/cm3. Pellets produced from this concentrate assayed 62.5% iron and 9% silica (dry basis). Construction began in 1977 to modify Reserve's operation. Process modifications were designed from pilot scale operations that had been operated and researched by Reserve for more than 10 years. There were two design restraints imposed on the process: economic constraints that Reserve continue to use much of the existing processes and structures in the new operation; and a substantial number of government-imposed permit constraints. In effect, the tailings process was designed first and then a concentrating process was developed that would "fit" the tailings disposal system. Operation of the modified process began in June 1980. Crushing Remains Unchanged No changes in process flow were made at either the Babbitt mine and crushing plant or at the Silver Bay fine crusher. Gyratory crushers reduce run-of-mine taconite to -90 mm-diam at the mine. Taconite is then transported to Silver Bay by intra-plant railroad. There are 10 fine crushing lines. Each consists of a double deck screen, followed by a heavy duty short head crusher, a second double deck screen, and second short head crusher. All screen undersize material bypasses the crushing lines, resulting in an open circuit crushing process. Fine crusher product is approximately 98% - 20 mm, 80% -12 mm, and 50% -10 mm in diameter. Each fine crusher line processes about 400 t/h of crude taconite. Cobbing Provides Aggregate for Tailings Dams The first major process change was the addition of dry cobbing, a dry magnetic separation step between the fine crusher and concentrator. Dry cobbing serves two major purposes in the new process. Its principal function is to provide large volumes of dry coarse aggregate for use in construction of tailings dams. This process rejects about 20% of the fine crusher product as tailings with a size analysis of 98% -20 mm and 50% - 10 mm. These tailings are free draining and have high frictional shear strengths-two key requirements for dam building aggregates. Fine crusher product is conveyed to a new dry cobbing building. Here crushed ore is discharged into one of two 30-minute capacity surge bins. Crushed ore is withdrawn by 12 constant speed conveyor belts; each discharges 500 t of crushed taconite into a dry cobbing machine. Each machine consists of a 3-m-long riffle splitter and two vari-

Ten years ago, only 3% of Consol's underground coal production resulted from using the longwall mining method. Today, that figure has grown to 45% and has helped the Pittsburgh-based concern fuel an upswing in productivity. The company reported that productivity at its underground mines, excluding labor strike periods, increased 24% between 1978 and 1981. Last year, an additional 8% increase was achieved. Efforts such as improved safety, training, engineering, and maintenance programs as well as the closing of unproductive mines has contributed to these gains, according to Joseph M. Richards, Consol's executive vice president of operations. But, Richards adds, a great part of the credit goes to longwall mining. What is Longwall Mining? To fully appreciate the advantages of longwall, one needs an understanding of how mining is done by other methods. For instance, in both conventional and continuous mining, rooms or tunnels are dug in the coal seam. Pillars of coal are left standing to support the roof as mining moves forward in the seam. In conventional mining, a slot is cut in the base of the seam and holes for blasting are drilled. After blasting, the coal is loaded. A more efficient method - continuous mining - uses a machine that combines cutting and loading. Longwall mining, by contrast, works backwards from the end of a panel. Two parallel sets of tunnels (development panels) are cut into a seam with continuous mining machines, then connected with a set of crosscuts at the far end. Min¬ing then proceeds back toward the entrance. Longwall mining employs some very productive machines. Large drum shearers, for example, run on a track along the length of the coal face for some 150-180 m (500-600 ft). The shearers cut the coal which falls onto a conveyor system or pan that also runs the entire length of the face. The longwall crew works under a roof of heavy steel supports called shields. As the coal is removed, shearers, pans, and shields are moved forward by hydraulic rams. The roof is allowed to collapse behind the shields. In addition to increasing production, longwall mining is considered to be safer because the miners work under strong steel shields. New designs have made them more rugged and maintenance free, as well as more stable on soft mine floors. Early roof supports, called chocks, had gaps in the roof canopies. The new roof shields now cover the entire working area and are better able to prevent roof material from falling into the working area, thereby improving safety and productivity. The Cortez gold mine is located in Lander County, NR, about 130 km (80 miles) southwest of Elko. Cortez Gold Mines (CGM) is a joint venture between Placer Dome US Inc. (60% operator) and Kennecott Corp. (40%). The claims that supply oxide and refractory ore feed to the Cortez milling facility are located in both Lander and Eureka counties. These include the Cortez and Horse Canyon deposits, all operated by the joint venture. Other deposits outside the CGM claim area include Fire Creek, Buckhorn, Gold Bar and Tonkin Springs. These deposits all occur along the Battle Mountain-Eureka Trend. History Mining in the Cortez district began in 1862 with the discovery of high-grade silver ores. Grades in the hundreds of ounces per ton occurred in an area 7 km (4.5 miles) southeast of the current CGM mill site. Underground mining through the Garrison and Arctic tunnels provided the bulk of the ore production between 1864 and 1895. To a lesser extent, the Mill Canyon area also supplied ore until 1930.

Any mining or engineering-construction excavation that extends below the water table must be dewatered. In many situations, the ground is of low permeability or the workings extend only a short distance below the water table. So water removal can be handled easily and economically by using mobile centrifugal pumps. However, there is an increasing number of mines that have a continuous high flow of water into the workings. Controlling this flow can significantly increase the cost of ore production. Successful implementation of any major dewatering scheme will ultimately rely on a clear understanding of the local geology. This understanding is necessary before an interpretation of ground water conditions can be made. It will dictate which dewatering methods are feasible. Once the geology and the ground water system are known, the scope and timing of the dewatering measures can be varied with the mine plan. Ground water modeling can assist in optimizing the dewatering system, though the precise objective of each model should be clearly defined. Production wells must be sited and drilled so that individual well efficiencies are high. Any lost efficiencies will translate into higher operating costs. Each well must be designed for maximum long-term control of the water table, and pumps sized to operate under continually changing heads. Finally, the investment in each production well must be protected during the mining process.

INTRODUCTION The Point Lepreau nuclear generating station was constructed in the late 1970's and early 1980's by the New Brunswick Electric Power Commission. Point Lepreau is a small peninsula on the north shore of the Bay of Fundy, about 55 km west of St. John, New Brunswick. Cooling water for the plant was to be obtained from and discharged into the Bay of Fundy by the system of shafts and tunnels illustrated in Fig. 1. The design engineer for the cooling water system was Albery, Pullerits, Dickson and Associates, Ltd., Toronto. Ferrera-Resco Ltd, Windsor, Ontario, was contractor for construction of the cooling water shaft and tunnel system, which was done between 1976 and 1979. The senior author was project manager for Ferrera-Resco, the junior author served as consultant to Ferrera-Resco on evaluation of certain geotechnical questions which arose during construction. SITE CONDITIONS Geology Except for limited overburden soils at the onshore shaft sites, the tunnels and shafts were constructed entirely in Triassic conglomerate, sandstone, and siltstone, with some shale interbeds. The bedding strike averaged about N6°E, The dip was to the west at about 30° along the Discharge Tunnel and 40° along the Intake Tunnel. Rock along the Intake Tunnel was mostly sandstone and siltstone and more thinly bedded, with RQ D generally in the range of 50 to 60%. Rock along the Discharge Tunnel tended to be coarser sandstone and conglomerate and more thickly bedded, with higher RQ D averaging about 80%. Open-source technology for supporting the Industry 4.0 has become the target of academic research in many sectors. This study reviewed the trends of open-source technology, its forms, and some industrial applications. As a case study using open-source hardware and software for the mining industry, this study proposed a low-cost environmental monitoring system for non-metallic underground mines to support mine safety and occupational health issues. The system was developed using open-source hardware, Arduino and 3D printer, to design the monitoring device. An open-source software, MIT App Inventor, was used for developing an Android application for smartphones to enable remote communication with the system. Field experiments were conducted at an underground tunnel and a non-metallic underground mining site to assess the performance of the system in both mobile and static modes, respectively. Although a few limitations related to the precision of the low-cost dust and gas sensors still exist, the findings of the experiments show that the mining industry can benefit from open-source technology deployment when considering cost factors

A great deal of attention has been directed toward the complexities and inadequacies of exploration and pre-bid geotechnical information for heavy construction projects, differing site conditions, and the adversary relationships which generally develop as a result. The adversary position has been maintained at all cost. The solution is simple, if not easy. The solution requires strict and equal adherence to given principles by all parties involved, throughout the life of the project, from conception to completion. It is necessary to review and redefine some basic concepts, without value judgements, from a context of getting the job done. In a recreated context, the role of truth, judgement, responsibility, and integrity, in exploration, engineering design, construction estimating, and project construction, will be examined. It is suggested that anticipated geotechnical conditions be defined unconditionally. The alternative choice is to give the bidder the opportunity of making the interpretive judgements based on geotechnical data. Similarly, a unilateral method of establishing encountered conditions that are agreeable to both owner and contractor, must be outlined prior to contracting. As anticipated and encountered conditions are firmly and accurately established, significant differences can evaluated based upon limitations specified in the contract documents. Impact of differences on project costs can be fixed by pre-defined methods.

The St. Peter Sandstone is typically a well-sorted, friable, ultra-pure, fine- to medium-grained, quartzose sandstone with silica content higher than 99 weight percent in places. The sand grains are well-rounded, highly spherical and characteristically frosted. Their size typically varies from 2 millimeters diameter (No. 10 U.S. Standard Sieve Series size) to less than 0.08 millimeters diameter (No. 200 U.S. Standard Sieve Series size). A freshly exposed surface of the formation is commonly white with shades of pink and green. Weathered surfaces are a dirty gray or brown and are case-hardened at many localities. Bedding is characteristically indistinct, and the formation usually appears massive throughout. The rock is cross-bedded and ripple-marked locally. The formation is generally porous, permeable and rarely fossiliferous in Missouri. The St. Peter is continuously present in the subsurface in the northern half of the state and along the southeastern edge of the state. The St. Peter crops out in a narrow band that starts in western Montgomery County and runs southeastward, along the Missouri River, to just west of St. Louis and continues south, just west of the Mississippi River, through Scott County. The outcrop belt varies from less than one mile wide to over ten miles wide, and it is over 150 miles in length. The formation dips into the subsurface radially away from the outcrop band. A notable isolated outcrop occurs in Lincoln County to the north of the main outcrop band. The St. Peter is discontinuously present in the subsurface along a band in the west-central portion of the state. It is not present at the surface or in subsurface in the remainder of the state. The formation averages 80?100 feet thick. There is an estimated 3.8 trillion short tons of St. Peter in Missouri. Sieve analyses on drill cuttings indicate three subsurface locations in northeastern Missouri where the St. Peter is greater than 10 percent by weight of sand falling in the 20?40 U.S. Standard Sieve Series size range. The St. Peter was first produced in Missouri in the 1870s for the manufacture of glass. Since that time it has been used as a paint additive, filler material, polishing compound, filtering media, and recently it is commonly used as a fracture proppant in oil and gas wells. The St. Peter is currently quarried and produced in Missouri from four sites located in St. Louis, Jefferson and Perry counties. In the same area there are at least nine abandoned historic mine sites.

This is the fifth annual tabulation of mineral royalty information. This tabulation, like the previous editions, includes all of the earlier data. There are also 60 new entries. In addition to royalty information, some entries show the cost of purchased reserves. Two articles relative to the evaluation of minerals reserves appeared in December, 1986. R.H. Paschall (In the Aggregate, ME, p 1139) wrote a good article, although it lacked specific royalty data. However, this author takes exception to two ideas in Paschall's column. Paschall contends that the royalty rate does not affect the mineral appraisal. This present author could not disagree more. Paschall also claims the location of an industrial mineral deposit is the only serious or practical caveat in comparing royalties. Comments received here from readers helped make the list of caveats that are cited each year. The readers will decide which factors influence the mineral value for their commodities of interest. Paschall's point about the relationship of the parties who are negotiating a royalty agreement is important and very well taken. The other article, written by William Vernon (Pit and Quarry, December 1986), gives a step-by-step process on how to conduct a mineral appraisal. The article cites three reasons for an appraisal: transfer rights; collateral for a loan; and taxation. A fourth reason is to establish adequate compensation for reserves lost through condemnation. This author has appeared in several court cases where compensation for loss of mineral reserves through condemnation required a mineral appraisal. Royalty rate becomes an important factor in the appraisal process, although the Pit and Quarry article refers to that part of the valuation equation as "profitability." Both articles were well written and are recommended reading for those interested in mineral valuations. The same caveats that have appeared in previous columns relative to factors that influence the value of reserves are restated. The data in the table serve as a general reference and are not intended to present an absolute scale of reserves costs. Several factors influence the value of any mineral commodity. The factors include: • location/transportation - especially significant for most industrial minerals; • market conditions both for the commodity and the company acquiring the right to mine; • quality or grade of the deposit as it reflects the amount of processing/beneficiation necessary to produce the finished product; and • legislative restrictions and conditions for mining a given material at a given site. These and other factors will significantly influence the cost of reserves. The table shows the range of royalties and the variations in the basis of computing the fees. In a few instances, it gives the cost of acquired reserves based on purchase price and quantitative estimates of the material in place. The table lists the commodity in column 1, and the subsequent columns give: • the location by state, US geographic area, or Canadian province ; • the cost - R for royalty and P for purchased cost; • the year in which the lease or purchase agreement occurred; and • comments or footnotes for more information. The cost column requires more explanation. Mining and processing of minerals, metals, and fossil fuels can release selenium and arsenic into wastewaters. Both selenium and arsenic are difficult to remove to levels that meet current drinking water and discharge criteria. These metalloids can be used as electron acceptors by microorganisms transforming them back to reduced states, thus removing or stabilizing them. Bioremediation cost effectiveness will be discussed in terms of site information required, microbial populations, co-contaminants, pH, redox, and nutrients. Full-scale, economical ex situ and in situ biotreatments are possible and can produce 1,000’s of times less sludge than conventional precipitation technologies.

The technology of making and using ?paste? from mine tailings is increasingly well known by the minerals industry. The primary applications are water recovery and ?stacking? of tailings with minimal use of dams and ponds. This paper highlights some applications, other than water recovery and stacking, that have come to the attention of a paste thickener equipment supplier. As generated by thickeners, paste (also called ?thickened tailings?) is a non-settling, relatively high concentration, suspension of solids that can be pumped. Paste deposits with an angle of repose, allowing minimal use of dams. High solids concentration allows more water recovery at the paste thickener than is achieved in conventional and high rate slurry tailings thickeners. This paper is based on paste as produced in a flow sheet that includes a thickener, underflow pumps that are typically centrifugal, transfer pumps that can be centrifugal or positive displacement, and a distribution system at the deposition site. Examples of paste applications other than water recovery or stacking include: ?mine? an existing tailings pond by removing slurry, recovering coal or iron ore values, and return the new tailings to the pond as a paste that does not res-suspend; use paste to seal an existing tailings pond from leaking to groundwater or to an underground mine; extend the life of an existing tailings pond by thickening the tailings to paste; move an existing dry tailings impoundment to a new location by slurrying, pumping, paste thickening, and redeposit; minimize the size of a filter by paste thickening the feed; operate a paste thickener and filter in parallel on a tailings stream with re-mixing to achieve a high solids concentration. The use of paste tailings technology has been expanding over the last 15 years. The applications, both implemented and under consideration, are increasingly diverse and include all minerals tailings. Tailings handling designers should always consider a paste option to the conventional slurry solution.

"Earth provides natural resources, such as fossil fuels and minerals that are vital for human life. As the global demand grows, especially for strategic minerals, commodity prices rapidly rise. Thus there is an identifiable risk of increasing supply shortage for minerals. Hence a major element in a long-term economic strategy must be, to ensure security of supply for these strategic minerals. In this rapidly changing global economic landscape, deep sea mining has gone from a distant possibility to a likely reality within just a decade.Although deep sea minerals extraction was investigated in the 1970’s, it was abandoned because of changing commodity economics, advances in on-land exploration techniques, growing concern on environmental impact, and political and legal aspects with regard to ownership issues. The developmental data from those days, if still available, are not adequate to allow engineering and building of an integral system for extraction of deep sea minerals without additional R&D work. Thus, deep sea mining is yet to attain a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) sufficient to successfully undertake deep sea mining operations, from resource discovery to resource assessment and to resource exploitation [Blue Mining, 2014]."
