Because of growing pressure from government and consumers to produce more coal, the mining industry must improve existing techniques and devise more efficient mining methods. Mining of the thicker, shallower and geologically superior coal seams in the western United States is being subjected to increasing pressure from environmentalists; and so in order to meet the demand, the coal industry is exhausting the more accessible surface seams and beginning to mine seam of over 1,000 feet in depth and less than. 30 inches in thickness. The longwall mining system is the natural choice for extracting deep and thin coal seams, as it operates almost independently of the overburden rock stress. Due to the added fact that longwall mining is an inherently more productive method than room and pillar mining, many coal producers are looking to it as a means of increasing productivity without a corresponding cost increase. The consistent rise in application of longwall mining in the United States in the last decade illustrates the excellent potential of this technique for the future. American mining conditions are geologically different from those in Europe where longwall mining has been highly developed and extremely successful. Although numerous successes have been recorded in the U.S. with this mining system, a substantial number of failures have also occurred. These failures are due primarily to roof control problems usually over the face, in the tail entry, or both. Another problem area for American operators contemplating the use of this method has been correct selection of equipment, which should be custom fitted to local mining conditions for optimum productivity. It is essential that correct estimates for chock resistances, support densities, supported and unsupported roof spans, as well as rates of advance and length of working faces be provided to optimize mining conditions. Unless extensive pilot projects are planned engineers must choose their equipment correctly at the outset. A typical investment in longwall equipment will amount to several millions of dollars.

This paper describes the development of a life of mine schedule (LOM) for one of the world?s largest known sedimentary Copper-Cobalt districts located in the Katanga Province, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). A particular feature of the Tenke Fungurume LOM schedule is the considerable number of pits/phases for scheduling, each competing to provide the best ore available to a capacity constrained process facility. This paper discusses the main scheduling objectives and constraints, data pre-processing as a scheduling aid, the mine scheduling approach, and results and conclusions.

Masbate Gold Mines, dormant since WWI I, are now back in operation. The ore treatment plant incorporates carbon-in-pulp processing, utilized because of the ready availability of coconut shell charcoal in the Philippines and the high clay content of the ore. A detailed description of the plant, including the surprisingly fast and efficient alcohol stripping facility is presented. Operating data for the plant is provided together with an interesting performance evaluation of mechanical versus air- lift agitated leach tanks.

The 2002 Arizona Conference was held Dec. 8 and 9, 2002, at the Doubletree Hotel at Reid Park in Tucson. The annual conference is organized by the Arizona Conference Board of Directors, which represents SME sections in Arizona and adjacent areas. The conference provides an opportunity for individuals and corporations associated with mining in the region to get together once each year to discuss the status of the industry. The meeting featured a keynote address, a distinguished lecture and about 30 technical papers. As was the case at the 2001 meeting, the economy, the price of copper and foreign competition continue to be the hot topics of discussion among the attendees. The domestic copper industry still faces challenges due to low copper prices dictated by the world market and because of a weakened domestic economy. There continues to be concern about the Arizona region’s copper industry in light of the mergers, downsizing and shutdowns that have occurred during the past several years.

Many concepts concerning equipment selection, performance prediction, and evaluation of support requirements for tunnel construction in soil or hard rock tunnels cannot be extrapolated directly for application in soft rock (compressive strength between 1.0 and 35.0 MPa). Case histories for small diameter (less than 3.5 m) tunnels in Austin, Texas, are analyzed to gain insight into particular problems encountered during tunnel excavation in weak sedimentary rock, and the performance of different excavation systems are compared.

The geology of the Muskeg River Oil Sands Mine is described to demonstrate how geologic modeling aided in resource evaluation and material characterization during the feasibility and construction stages. Bitumen is hosted in the clastic sediments of the Cretaceous McMurray Formation which is informally divided into members representing the fluvial, estuarine and marine environments of this transgressive sequence. Lithofacies mapping of drill core provides further detail to classify materials as resource type, for extraction suitability and for construction suitability. Geologic interpretation provides tools for the engineers to produce effective mine plans and for the operators to execute them during mine development.

Scattered north and south along a 161-km (100-mile) stretch of Interstate 80, Newmont Min¬ing Corp. owns four active mining properties in Nevada?s northern high desert ? Carlin Trend Operations, Midas, Twin Creeks and Phoenix. Among the four, there are nine openpits, five underground mines and 14 processing facilities. While gold is the predominant ore, silver and copper are also produced. And in a move to hold down energy costs, Newmont built and owns the 200-MW (net), coal-fired TS power plant. This plant provides about 65 percent of the power used for Newmont?s own operations, while the rest is sold to NV Energy, which services Nevada and northeastern California. Bringing the Phoenix Mine ? Newmont?s newest in Nevada ? on-line presented many developmental and operational challenges. Located about 19 km (12 miles) southwest of the town of Battle Mountain, the general area had been home to prospectors and other mining companies since the 1860s. But any profitability in developing the lower grade gold, copper and silver deposit at Phoenix proved elusive, with Battle Mountain Gold being the last company to make an attempt. When Newmont acquired Battle Mountain Gold and its Phoenix reserves in 2001, the lower grade of ore was not a deterrent. Newmont found Nevada-wide cost savings synergies for maximizing profit during the depressed gold market of the late 1990s. The new property was aptly renamed the Phoenix Mine, a nod to its rising from the ashes of the dreams and efforts of previous mine owners.

A 2-dimensional computational model based on the discrete element method (DEM) is utilized for modeling of stamp-charged coke making. In this process, a large volume of coal is compacted to one single coal cake before entering the coke oven. Cake densification and mechanical strength development are key factors for the subsequent production of a high-quality coke. An approach is introduced for model calibration utilizing multiple control parameters obtained from a laboratory-scale stamping device. Experimental data on stamper rebound amplitude, attenuation and peak force are compared with simulation output in a pairwise manner by constructing a criteria space, which allows identification of model settings best satisfying the control parameters. The calibration procedure carried out by multiple criteria comparison aided model parameter selection for reproducing stamper behavior in response to the properties of the cake subjected to compaction. This modeling and calibration procedure offers possibilities for numerically studying the densification and mechanical strength development of coal cakes. However, the approach is also more widely applicable to other compaction processes.

Mining activity in a number of metal ores has been running quite high over the last few years. In particular, those metals that employ acid functional extraction processes such as copper, nickel, cobalt and uranium have been particularly active. The world?s largest nickel mine ? the massive $4.76 billion Ambatovy nickel mine on the African island nation of Madagascar is nearing completion. When it reaches its full production capacity in 2013, the mine will produce 60,000 MT/yr of nickel and 5600 MT/yr of cobalt. Coming on the heels of the Ambatovy project is the Long Harbour Processing Plant in Newfoundland, Canada which will process the ore from Vale?s Voisey Bay mine in Labrador. Voisey?s Bay is expected to generate more than 50,000 MT/yr of nickel ore when it starts up in 2013. Next up will be the Boleo project in Mexico on the Baja peninsula. When commissioned in 2013, the $1.4 Billion Boleo project is expected to produce 60,000 MT/yr copper, 3100 MT/yr cobalt, 36,000 MT/yr zinc and 100,000 ? 250,000 MT/yr manganese carbonate.

In addition to compliance with government emissions and reporting requirements, mining and mineral processing companies are increasing energy efficiency to reduce costs and become more competitive in the global marketplace. One of the major obstacles to identifying opportunities for increased energy efficiency is the lack of readily available data on energy use, and more importantly the energy use linked to production data, that identify energy reduction opportunities. As well as energy reduction, mining and mineral processing companies often struggle with the prediction of energy use, and are often penalized for under or over forecasting. Once again, it is the lack of timely information that makes this prediction difficult. This paper looks at expanding the use of a Manufacturing Execution Systems by integrating with Energy Solutions. This will provide automatic, timely information, at a granularity that makes it easier to identify energy reduction opportunities, reduce energy costs, and better predict energy use in a mining and mineral processing operation.

The reliability of a set of flotation results is key to minimizing project risk either at concentrator commissioning, or at the point of implementing an improvement to an existing concentrator operation. High-Confidence Flotation Testing was developed for this purpose, and is part of the list of technologies of various scales used by Xstrata Process Support (XPS) in addressing these projects. The methodology is based on two principles: one, to ensure that the ore sample is representative and has been well-blended and subsampled; two, to perform the flotation tests in sufficient numbers of replicates with appropriate quality controls, so as to improve the reproducibility of the test data. Across ten years of practice and continuous improvement with this methodology at Xstrata Process Support, Sudbury, several improvements to this method and complementary connections into sampling and quantitative mineralogy have been developed. Two case studies are reviewed. These show the capability of this system in both optimizing an existing concentrator operation and in serving a new mine scenario. Further work to improve the efficiency of this procedure has been identified.

Every year, severe injuries and fatalities occur when a miner is struck or pinned by a continuous mining machine, shuttle car, scoop or other piece of mobile mining equipment. Proximity detection systems offer a means to prevent these types of injuries and fatalities by sensing the presence of a miner and disabling machine motion. Although hundreds of these systems are installed and in use in operating coal mines, the influence that coal has on the electromagnetic fields associated with these systems has never been rigorously quantified. NIOSH researchers have conducted tests to measure whether the proximity of coal has a significant influence on a popular design of proximity detection system. The system tested utilizes a low frequency magnetic field generator that would be mounted on the mining machine. At the NIOSH Safety Research Coal Mine in Pittsburgh, researchers measured the performance of a simplified proximity detection system of this type first on the surface then underground at varying distances from a coal face. Analysis of these measurements shows that the presence of coal does not have a measurable impact. In the dimension stone industry, workers in processing shops may be exposed to harmful levels of respirable silica dust when conducting the different tasks in stone preparation, which include cutting, grinding, polishing, and thermaling. To protect workers from this health hazard, operators sometimes ventilate processing shops using fan-powered dust collectors to capture and filter dust. To investigate this issue, NIOSH, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory, in cooperation with a dimension stone operation, upgraded an off-the-shelf dust collector the operator was utilizing in a polishing/cutting shop. Initial dust surveys showed that the unit was under-designed for the amount of dust being generated in the shop. The objective of the research was to cost-effectively increase the air cleaning volume and improve dust capture efficiency of the unit with a larger motor and blower. The unit?s original stock 0.56 kw motor and blower was replaced with a 2.24 kw motor and matching blower to increase airflow. The unit was evaluated both in the laboratory and the shop before and after the retrofit to determine the improvement of the upgrade. The study showed that the 2.24 kw upgrade improved the performance over the original 0.56 kw motor resulting in more dust being cleaned from the ambient air in the shop. The 2.24 kw unit cleaned 19% more air and captured 32% more respirable dust than the 0.56 kw unit.

The last 12 months has seen the construction of the first Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) TBM excavated tunnel in New Zealand on the Project Hobson sewer storage tunnel for Watercare Services Limited, with the concurrent excavation of the second EPB tunnel on the Rosedale Outfall project for North Shore City Council. Together these tunnels involve a total length of 6km and follow an 8 year pause in TBM activity in Auckland. TBM performance on these two projects is thus of significant interest as there are four major tunneling projects totaling over NZ$8B being planned for Auckland, in similar ground conditions. Auckland?s bedrock is a weak sandstone/siltstone (East Coast Bays Formation), subject to infilled paleovalleys. The geology in the region has been significantly influenced by volcanic activity; 49 volcanoes are present within 20km of the city centre. The paper describes the design and construction challenges for the projects, including TBM performance, ?sticky spoil? management, and risks associated with basalt lava flows and two paleovalleys. Watercare?s Project Hobson also saw the successful implementation of a Geotechnical Baseline Report?one of the first uses of this type of document in Australasia. Rosedale Outfall is designed for high internal water pressures with varying hydraulic flows, with the risk of exfiltration explicitly addressed.

The Joint Water Pollution Control Plant, operated by the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County, treats wastewater generated by over three million people. A new tunnel and ocean outfall is being considered to meet future hydraulic demands and provide long-term redundancy for the Districts? existing tunnels, portions of which were constructed as early as the 1930s. The detailed process used to evaluate the feasibility of various tunnel and out-fall locations is described. Challenges include a geologic profile with mixed face and squeezing ground conditions; high water pressures; active fault crossings; gassy and contaminated ground conditions; and liquefaction, slope stability, and lateral spreading concerns in the area of the riser and diffusers.

The authors summarise the development and recent advances in the reconstruction and visualisation of three-dimensional objects from point data and describe applications to the reconstruction of orebody shapes from drill-hole and other data. In particular, Dijkstra's algorithm is proposed and implemented as a means of optimal reconstruction of complex orebody and topographical shapes from irregularly located sample data. The surfaces of the shapes are constructed from triangular tiles and the algorithms proposed by the authors are guaranteed to find the optimal set of tiles that "best" construct the surfaces on the basis of specified objective criteria. The algorithms are illustrated by applications to a complex silver/gold/zinc/lead deposit.

The Forestry Reclamation Approach (FRA) specifies that the upper 1.22 m of material on the reclaimed surface should be left as uncompacted as possible to facilitate tree root growth. One of the main concerns about applying the FRA to steep slopes is that the upper 1.22 m of material could cause the reclaimed slopes to be unstable. Successful application of FRA on flat and rolling surfaces precipitated this investigation. Details of a field investigation conducted at a steep-slope mine are available in an earlier publication (Kumar and Sweigard, 2011). A total of 70 survey monuments were driven into the slope in a regular pattern to monitor slope movement. Quarterly surveys of the monuments were done to quantify any type of mass movement either horizontally or vertically. The methodology proposed for slope movement was verified using numerical models. Analytical models based on limit equilibrium technique and numerical models based on the finite element method were developed for slope stability analysis. The limit equilibrium analysis was done using Geo-Slope software following the Simplified Bishop Method. The finite element (FEM) numerical model was developed using the Plaxis computer program following the strength reduction technique. Two kinds of slope stability analysis were performed: first with the top 1.22 m of loose material and second without top loose material. Finally, the field investigation results were compared with stability analysis results. Both of these approaches showed that application of the FRA on steep slopes is not causing any significant instability problems that would not exist otherwise for overly steepened slopes. Newmont’s Lone Tree Mine, located in northern Nevada, is an open pit gold operation supported by a standard truck and shovel mine production fleet (Caterpillar 785Bs and Hitachi EXs). Newmont continues to search for ways to decrease capital expenditure and lower operating cost, hence the implementation of the Ultra Light Body (ULW) concept. The fundamental idea associated with the ULWs is the increased payload potential. Economic justification comes from successful achievement of additional payload, within the truck’s rated GVW, without changing its loading and hauling characteristics. The increase in payload capacity allows equivalent tonnage movement using fewer trucks.

Portland, Oregon’s $370 million West Side Combined Sewer Overflow Tunnel Project has completed the final phase of construction and commissioning. The construction contract, which began in September 2002, was a reimbursable cost plus fixed fee contract that followed a qualifications-based contractor procurement process and apre-construction planning phase. This paper addresses the final results of the contracting method and provides a lessons-learned case history. Specific items addressed include the benefits realized from the contracting method, areas of improvement, final costs compared to the original contract estimates, design changes and schedule impacts, and subcontract management issues.
