This article provides an overview for a series of leadership development workshops offered through the SME Young Leaders Program. The first of these workshops, “Accelerated Development Plan,” will be held at the upcoming SME Annual Meeting in St. Louis, MO on Sunday, March 26. How does a foundation of technical competencies relate to the development of social competencies necessary for management and leadership roles in the resource sectors? Technical competencies provide the foundation for a successful career. Social competencies provide the framework on that foundation. Successful leaders will be those who develop competencies in all areas.

Good times make for happy miners. And the past few years have seen a lot of smiling mining engineers, geologists, metallurgists, corporate executives, analysts, investment bankers and shareholders. And nowhere was that more evident than at the 74th Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada’s (PDAC) annual meeting. The meeting, held in Toronto March 5-8, attracted a record 14,500 people. Of those, the PDAC said attendees came from an estimated 100 countries. And about 40 countries sent national delegations to the meeting. Argentina, for example, sent nearly 100 people. The PDAC meeting has always been a event where companies and individuals can get a look at numerous properties in all parts of the world that could potentially become major mines. And through the many receptions, hospitality suites and just sitting in the local restaurants and taverns, deals are usually made.

In 1990, a residential area above the North Outfall Sewer (NOS) tunnel constructed in 1924, experienced subsidence. After sewage was diverted into the North Outfall Replacement Sewer (NORS), soil probing from within the tunnel was conducted, soil-improvement options were developed, and a preferred grouting scheme was analyzed by numerical modeling to evaluate the stability of the 80-year+ old tunnel liner under grouting-induced loading conditions. This paper discusses the initial field investigation and the development and analysis of a grouting scheme originally intended to be implemented before relining of the tunnel. The scheme was later modified, and the new liner was installed before the final probing and grouting work was done.

In this study, a 3D model of the shovel motion based multi-body system dynamics in the Automatic Dynamic Analysis of Mechanical Systems (ADAMS) environment was developed. The kinematics model of the shovel was modeled as a multi-body system, which comprises the lower, upper, and the attachment mechanisms. The Euler-Lagrangian equations were employed as the computational framework to describe the dynamic behavior of the model. A virtual prototype of the shovel was built in the ADAMS software environment. This environment allows the visualization of a 3D motion of the general mechanical system and the prediction of interference of the moving components of the shovel. The numerical analysis and animation of digging, swinging and dumping motions for the shovel were performed. The superimposed display of the deployment for the shovel in three phases allows a detailed examination of the dynamic interference among assembly components. The Fort Knox Mine is located in Alaska’s interior, where the average ambient air temperatures range from -24oC in January to 16oC in July. The mill processes a free milling gold ore utilizing both a gravity recovery circuit and a conventional cyanide leach/carbon-in-pulp circuits. Mathematical models have been developed to accurately predict the impact of leach circuit slurry temperature on gold leach, carbon adsorption and cyanide destruction kinetics. Additionally, an energy balance approach has been used to model the seasonal variations in slurry temperatures throughout the Fort Knox mill. The energy balance model, combined with the kinetics models previously developed to predict plant performance, was used to justify a tailing thickener installation at the Fort Knox Mine. This paper describes the development of the energy balance model and its prediction of plant performance assuming a tailings wash thickener to reduce heat loss from the mill. Also presented is an analysis of the post project plant performance that validates the model and shows the mine produced an additional 596 kg (19,155 ounces) of gold, while reducing mill reagent costs by $6,302,000 during the first 38 months of operation.

A dump edge and vehicle proximity warning system is being developed at the Colorado School of Mines using GPS and wireless local area networks to improve the safety of off-highway trucks in open pit mines. After two years of research, software development, and testing in the laboratory, field tests are currently being carried out at operating limestone quarries and open pit mining operations to evaluate the effectiveness of the system under rugged operating conditions. This paper describes the progress made on this NIOSH-funded project and discuss, tests carried out recently, at the Morenci open pit copper mine in Arizona.

Seventeen percent of US coal production now comes from the 19 surface coal mines in the Powder River Basin of northeastern Wyoming. The Powder River Coalfield, which coincides with this topographic and structural basin, is unique to the conterminous US, in that it contains an estimated 934.4 Gt (1.03 trillion st) of in-place coal resources. At least 13.2 Gt (14.6 billion st) is a compliant, strippable reserve base. In 1993, an estimated 162 Mt (179 million st), or 98% of the coal mined in this Wyoming coalfield, came from the thick - average 30.5 m (100 ft) - subbituminous, Wyodak coalbed, or from the Anderson and Canyon coals in the one mine where the Wyodak is split into two separate coalbeds. The other 2.7 Mt (3 million st) of coal mined in the Powder River Basin in 1993 came from the School, Badger, Monarch and Deitz No. 3 coalbeds. In this "world class" coalfield, there are at least 13 other persistent, 3 to 15 m (10 to 50 ft) thick, coalbeds as well as the Big George and Lake De Smet coalbeds, which are each 61 m (200 ft) or more thick in places. None of these latter 13 coals are mined at this time.

A major spontaneous combustion incident occurred in the sealed goaf of the SL3 Panel; Southland Colliery in 2003 resulting in the loss of a longwall and sealing of the mine. The most important issue for the new owners, Yancoal Australia Pty. Ltd, was to effectively manage the atmosphere in the fire affected sealed area. This atmosphere comprised of flammable gases, the products of combustion and excessive levels of oxygen due to pressure differentials across the panel isolation seals with a potential ignition source associated with the residual spontaneous combustion event. The challenges were met in the first instance by the erection of pressure balance chambers with limited success. The problem was not solved until the pressure chambers were pressurized using a Floxal Nitrogen Plant supplied by Air Liquide Australia. Given the success of this approach on a small scale, a higher capacity Air Liquide Floxal Unit was acquired to manage spontaneous combustion at the recommencement of longwall mining operations. This provided the ability to pressurize pressure chambers that were installed in the Maingate Seals behind the face of the adjacent Longwall Block effectively preventing the ingress of oxygen and permitting the goaf to self inert in a reasonable time period. This paper summarizes a new proactive method of mitigating the risks associated with active and sealed goaves. Proactive management of these areas using low flow nitrogen into pressure chambers to maintain a positive pressure has eliminated typical reliance in explosion proof or explosion resistance seals as the primary control.

Environmental and economic costs related to equipment fuel consumption and carbon dioxide (CO2) emission present a substantial challenge to the mining industry. Haul trucks are an integral part of the overall surface mining system and they consume a substantial quantity of fuel. Consequently, they produce a significant amount of CO2. The objective of this research is to (i) establish a mathematical relationship among a truck?s fuel consumption, power and engine load factors and (ii) determine the amount of a truck?s CO2 emission and the associated cost that may arise from potential CO2 legislation. In order to achieve these objectives we have considered original equipment manufacturer (OEM) haul trucks, commonly used in surface mining operations. The research presented here may be used by mining professionals to help determine the cost and environmental burden of the trucks? application, and efficiently manage energy consumption.

In 2002, many in the mining industry — companies, academia and government — realized that the industry would soon be facing a serious shortfall in salaried and hourly employees. Depending on whose numbers are to be believed, 20 percent to 50 percent of current mining professionals are expected to retire within five to 10 years. And there are not enough students currently enrolled in mineral-related programs to the fill the need. Part of the impending shortage in professionals was brought on by the industry’s negative image, which discouraged students from enrolling in mining engineering programs. Another part was that the industry was in the doldrums and was seen by the public as a dying industry.

Geogrids can be used as surface control on both the roof and rib in underground mines to prevent the fall of small pieces of rock and material from between the primary supports. The use of screen material such as geogrid can significantly reduce the number of ground fall injuries caused by these small rock falls. Because of the potential for reducing injuries through the use of screen, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted tests on screen materials including geogrid to determine their support characteristics and identify parameters that can affect their performance with respect to maintaining broken or failed rock. A specially designed test frame installed in the NIOSH Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) has been used to evaluate the load and stiffness characteristics of the screen material. Two types of geogrids with various designs have been tested-a polyester yarn and a polypropylene grid. The load-displacement characteristics of these grids were determined and the load capacity and stiffness were calculated through 20in of displacement. The load capacity and stiffness of the geogrid in general are shown to be related to the ultimate tensile strength of the screen material.

The owners of large infrastructure projects are challenged on how to implement sound engineering and construction contracting strategies that address their prime expectations: a quality job, on time and within budget. With the increasing number of large engineering and construction projects worldwide, owners continue to search for alternative contracting strategies to address their risk, quality, sustainability (operability and performance), schedule, and budget concerns. Coupled with the shortage of resources, delays, political pressures, and other obstacles in procurement and negotiation processes, engineers and contractors are also looking for creative ways to optimize contract packaging strategies for efficient and successful project delivery. This paper compiles an array of decision making criteria and suggests a balanced evaluation, ranking and selection strategy in procurement of both engineering and construction services for large tunneling and other infrastructure projects. A number of owners? general preferences and viewpoints are discussed on large tunnel programs encompassing water and wastewater conveyance systems, pump stations and treatment facility upgrades. Contract packaging strategies and project phasing and segmenting alternatives for preliminary engineering, final design, construction management, and actual construction of facilities are featured for several large water and wastewater infrastructure projects. While the selection (and the relevant selection process and criteria) and performance of service providers, whether for engineering or construction, have profound effects on the outcome of any given project, this paper only examines strategies for con-tract packaging. More specifically, the authors evaluated case studies and developed a range of recommendations for packaging of large water and wastewater infrastructure projects with multiple components.

The Getchell Mine, near Winnemucca, NR, was discovered in the 1930s and was initially mined to recover gold from oxide ores. During the 1940s and 1950s, gold was recovered from the highly refractory arsenic sulfide ores using horizontal kilns to roast the ores. During the 1960s, fluid bed roasters were used to oxidize the ore and recover the gold. The mine was shut down from 1968 through 1985. In 1985, heap leaching was started on the low-grade oxide ores that were available. In 1989, a pressure oxidation circuit was started to recover gold from the higher grade sulfide ores. Flowsheet The basic plant flowsheet of the Getchell Mine are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The plant was designed to process a nominal 2.7 kt/d (3000 stpd) of ore with about an 85% onstream availability and a gold production of 15.5 kg/d (500 oz/ day). Run-of-mine (ROM) ore is fed directly to a wet semiautogenuous grinding (SAG) mill after the +457-µm (+18in.) rock is removed on a stationary grizzly. From the SAG mill, the ore goes to a ball mill where it is ground to 80% -75 µm (-200 mesh) and is then sent to a thickener. The SAG and ball mill operate in closed circuit using cyclones.

Estimation of the cutter life and cost is a part of evaluating performance for a hard rock TBM in any project. Various approaches has been proposed for calculation of disc cutter life in various rock types based on machine specifications and rock strength and abrasivity. Cutter change time is a parameter that is used in some of the estimates and is defined as the average time required for changing a cutter on the cutter head and cutter life is the number of cubic meters of excavated rock per each disc cutter. Analysis of cutter life information of several tunnel projects from around the world has revealed that the published models for estimation of cutter consumption require some revisions to offer a more accurate prediction. The preliminary analysis of data shows that the average cutter change time is approximately 66 minutes for different cutter sizes and there is a minimal difference between corresponding cutter change times of the large (e.g. 19 or 20 in) versus smaller cutters (e.g. 15.5 to 17 in). This paper reviews the available and published cutter life data from various projects. It also introduces new models for estimation of cutter life and cutter change time as part of TBM down time and utilization analysis.

Mechanical excavation methods can significantly improve excavation performance and labor safety compared to drill and blast operations. Herrenknecht has developed a mechanized shaft sinking method for soft and medium strength rock. This system combines innovative technologies which allow simultaneous excavation, removal of cut material and the installation of rock support. This Shaft Boring Roadheader ?SBR? is flexible in diameter and can be used in shafts with changing diameters and different shaft support requirements for depth up to 2,000 m. During regular excavation personnel are not required to access or work on the shaft bench. The boom used to cut the shaft profile is based on roadheader technology.

King County?s (KC) Brightwater Conveyance Project in Seattle, Washington involves the construction of approximately 21 kilometers (13 miles) of bored tunnel, in three contracts, with four TBM?s which produce large amounts of real-time digital mining data. To facilitate the management of TBM data with a single interface and assist in project Quality Assurance, KC?s Construction Manager (Jacobs Engineering) recommended the use of the software TPC (Tunneling Process Control), developed by Babendererde Engineers GmbH. The paper demonstrates how TPC was used for oversight, analysis and QA on a complex tunneling project and how contemporaneous review and management of data results in a better understanding of TBM performance than can be obtained by retrospective analysis of data.

Beneath some of New York?s most iconic buildings ? The Met Life Building, the Helmsley Building, the Waldorf Astoria ? crews are busily at work on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority?s long-awaited East Side Access (ESA) project. In fact, it is 14 floors beneath the famed Grand Central Station where one of the centerpieces of the project, the new Long Island Railroad (LIRR) station terminal, is being blasted and carved into shape. When completed in 2016, the $7.3-billion ESA project will increase LIRR?s capacity into Manhattan and significantly relieve congestion at Penn Station. Currently, 37 LIRR trains per rush hour roll into the crowded Penn Station where many riders must then transfer to subway trains to complete their commute. When completed, the ESA tunnels will bring an estimated 160,000 riders directly to Grand Central Station, saving those riders 30 to 40 minutes. Studies have found that more people work within walking distance of Grand Central than Penn Station. ?The benefits of the project are tremendous,? MTA Capital Construction President Michael Horodniceanu told more than 340 industry professionals attending the UCA of SME?s George A. Fox Conference in New York on Jan. 26. ?The ESA is the first expansion of the LIRR in 100 years. It will increase the East River tunnel capacity by 50 percent and will help support job growth around Grand Central.?

Metallic magnesium is mostly used in lightweight alloys in order to decrease fuel consumption in automotive applications. Several different production processes are currently used worldwide, and the magnesium production scenario is changing rapidly, with Chinese production increasingly dominating the world market. For the purpose of this paper, a novel approach to Life Cycle Assessment was applied, in which Material Flow Accounting and energy-based methods (Embodied Energy, Exergy and Emergy Analyses) are integrated and complemented, with a detailed description of the environmental hazards associated with emissions from all the different processes.

Introduction Rock bolting is a general term that encompasses pinning, roof bolting, rib bolting, and cable bolting. Rock bolting contributes the highest nonproductive cost and is the most significant safety risk in mining today. Total installed bolt costs are now more than $20 per bolt. Rebolting or repair work doubles this. And bolting accidents account for about 30% of all fatal and nonfatal lost time accidents. It is only logical, then, for the mine operator to install the highest quality anchors possible. Every bolt on the market - tensioned, untensioned, full contact, or point anchor - has designed capabilities in axial, shear, and fluctuating ground conditions. Bolts will provide a designed support if material specifications and installation procedures fall within the manufacturer's recommendations. This also assumes that there are no unexpected geological or operational changes. Proper material specifications and installation procedures should guarantee the mine operator a quality anchor. To help assure this, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), the US Bureau of Mines (USBM), and the AMC Manufacturers group developed stringent ASTM materials standards. These govern mechanical point anchor bolts and bolts using threaded and nonthreaded rebar. There are also minimum standards that suppliers must comply with in the manufacture of frictional bolts. However, most frictional bolt standards are based on the manufacturer's own specifications. It would be impossible to set uniform regulations on frictional bolts. Each bolt provides support in a slightly different manner and thereby requires different material needs. Quality Control In any case, material quality can generally be assured through tight order specifications and periodic quality control checks. The problem with installing quality anchors does not solely lie with the material. It includes all the events that occur from the time a bolt leaves a manufacturer to the time it is installed. The anchoring ability of any major type bolt can be affected by transportation, storage, mechanical performance of installation equipment, installation demands of the operator, proper drilling accessories, and local geology. Table 1 and Fig. 1 document the negative events that can affect each bolt and the degree to which it can be affected. Drilling a hole of oversized diameter, for example, is an operator controlled factor. It will adversely affect most bolts. An over-sized diameter reduces, or even eliminates, the anchorage capability of a mechanical shell. It will reduce the support capacity of a split set to nearly nothing. And it will cause a partial or incomplete grouting around the resin bolt. Frequently, due to bit wear, holes are drilled undersized in diameter and may not be properly cleaned out. In this case, it will be difficult for the operator to push the mechanical shell into the hole, thereby causing him to drill another hole. In cases where the bolt is obviously not providing anchorage, operators will probably drill another hole and place another bolt. Rock Bolt Regulations It is the situations where a bolt is improperly installed in the hole, but gives the appearance of a good bolt, that are frightening. In fact, some safety officials and engineers believe that only 50% to 60% of installed bolts are working. These bolts cause irregular ground load transfers in other bolts and overload them. This causes hazardous situations and overstressing. It is these bolts that fail prematurely 200 to 255 mm (8 to 10 in.) behind the face and possibly contribute to the high accident rate. Federal regulations require the use of methane monitors on all mining machines. All machine-mounted methane monitors currently used in underground coal mines rely on catalytic heat of combustion sensors. As a comparison, although not currently approved for use on underground mining equipment, instruments with infrared sensors are evaluated in this study. Potential advantages of using infrared sensors include faster response time, long-term stability, and reduced maintenance needs. Tests conducted in the laboratory and at a full-scale model mine compare the performance of catalytic heat of combustion and infrared sensors operating under test conditions designed to simulate airflow conditions underground.
