Between the main fan and the coalface in a mine a lot of air is lost through leakage at stoppings, doors, air-crossing etc. so that a much larger quantity of air has to be circulated by the fan in order that the stipulated quantity of air reaches the face. Stoppings are of vital importance not only for effective ventilation of underground mines but also for isolation of areas affected by fire or susceptible to spontaneous heating. Generally, isolation stoppings are made of brick in cement mortar. If the area is far from the pit or unapproachable, it is very difficult and sometimes impossible to build these stoppings. To overcome these difficulties, particularly near fire affected zones, an alternate successful attempt was made in Indian mines to make a plug underground, from surface through borehole, using cement concrete. In this paper the salient features of the methodology adopted for construction of the plug and the experimental procedure for the measurement of air leakage by SF6 tracer gas is described. Measurements of air leakage through rows of ventilation stoppings in two mines viz. Moira (Jambad and Kajora seams) and Kuardi11/12 (Niga seam) collieries of Eastern Coalfields Ltd. (ECL) have been incorporated. Results of experiments conducted at the Central Mining Research Institute (C.M.R.I) to determine leakage through25 and 38 cm thick brick stoppings are also discussed. Results of all these studies are compared, which show that the efficacy and reliability of the remote filled cement concrete plug in respect of air permeability is satisfactory.

The Corridor Sands deposits of heavy mineral sands represent the largest known economic resource of titanium dioxide minerals. The West Block of Deposit 1 alone contains Measured and Indicated Mineral Resources of 1.7 billion tonnes containing 4.14 per cent ilmenite, estimated in accordance with the JORC standard, sufficient for at least the first 20 years of mining. Total mineral resources are estimated to be approximately 17 billion tonnes at 5 per cent Total Heavy Minerals (THM). Test work was undertaken on the West Block of Deposit 1 over a period of two years in order to develop the process flow sheet to bankable standards. Geological, mineralogical and metallurgical test work was integrated from a pre-feasibility stage to the full bankable stage. The process flowsheet was developed with the central objective of the production of saleable products, of consistent quality and acceptable to the respective end-markets. The aim of this paper is to describe the way in which the various challenges for the project have been addressed by using integrated geological and mineralogical information, which has resulted in the development of a complete flow sheet. The process confirmed that material within customer specifications could be produced, once various metallurgical parameters were understood. This flow sheet development progressed from laboratory test work through to full field trials at pilot plant scale on large consignments of mineralized material. The flow sheet was developed to such a standard as to be used with confidence for both engineering design and cost estimates, and to determine the recovery factors to be used in financial evaluations. Mechanized mining can be experienced as a symphony by substituting the instruments for the different machines that each perform their own function and thus have different sounds. The drill-rig is the soloist around which all the other machines must play their part in harmony. Each machine can function on its own, but productivity is achieved only when all of the machines function in a holistic manner, as the different sounds of instruments form a symphony when playing together. To produce a symphony is to have the ability to put together all the pieces. It is the capacity to synthesize rather than to analyse. Today?s managers have to apply this harmonic way of thinking to make the system of mechanized mining work. In other words each of these people must have the ability of a conductor, whose job involves corralling a diverse group of notes, instruments and performers, and producing a unified and pleasing sound. At Modikwa Mine the introduction of the MAPS (Mine Activity Performance System) has allowed management to obtain a clear view of all the activities associated with the equipment. Through synthesis the issues that hampered productivity were identified and addressed to improve production and reduce costs.

Derelict and ownerless (D&O) mines in South Africa have been an ongoing concern for over a decade. While some progress has been made to rehabilitate D&O asbestos sites, significant work remains, exacerbated by the growth in illegal mining. There are concerns regarding the accuracy and transparency of the D&O database, lack of oversight, and constrained funding, and the government is increasingly looking to the private sector to fund rehabilitation. Given these challenges, a new, sustainable approach to D&O sites in South Africa is needed to bring clarity and transparency to the process, recognise responsibilities and promote partnerships, and explore economic opportunities at D&O sites to reduce the financial liability and respond to the growing demand for critical minerals. This article has three components: i) reviews of international D&O good practices; ii) it analyses South Africa’s current approach and the D&O sites; and iii) proposes a D&O framework that addresses data, risk ratings, responsibilities and rehabilitation, economic opportunities, and stakeholder engagement. The study finds that the majority of the 6,100 so-called abandoned D&O mines are quarries and mine site features, 16% are operational, at least 11% have owners, and only 752 (12%) require rehabilitation. The framework aims to bring clarity and fairness to decision-making and to assign risk and responsibility for rehabilitation and seeks to incorporate economic opportunities to reduce the financial burden of rehabilitation, create jobs for local communities, and respond to the growing demand for critical minerals for the clean energy transition.

World HCFeCr production is 6.0 million tonnes. Correspondingly 1.1-1.6 t slag / t FeCr is produced depending on the raw material basis. Essentially all FeCr is produced in submerged arc furnaces, while the role of competitive technologies like DC is limited. In all furnaces fluxes are used to optimize the slag composition. Vital characteristics are smelting point, electric conductivity and viscosity. The main components of FeCr slag are SiO2, Al2O3 and MgO. Additionally it consists of Cr-, Fe-oxides and CaO. Granulated slag and/or classified slag products are produced depending on the production process. The slag products are mainly marketed in road and civil construction purposes but also in producing refractories. Normally crushed and screened slags are produced simultaneously when recovering alloy. The leachate of slag products is low and performance results are excellent. Slag products successfully replace natural sand and macadam. Generation of waste is essentially reduced. Producing and using slag products are described as BAT-technology and it is an essential environmental aspect. Outokumpu Tornio Works produces 320 000 t FeCr-slag/a. This paper deals with formation of slag in smelting process, its chemical composition, physical and structural characteristics, utilization and product specifications as well as environmental aspects. The slag products are standardized and CE marked. Additionally the role of slag in smelting and alloy recovery is reviewed in this paper.

Extensive field studies have been carried out to investigate the pillar fire problems in one coal mine in India. A Thermal IR gun and a Thermovision camera have been employed for thermal scanning to assess the state of heating in selected pillars. Special sampling set-ups have been designed to collect gas samples from the holes drilled into the selected pillars and the multigas detector is used to analyse the composition of samples in situ. In order to predict the spontaneous heating in coal pillars, different gas ratios have been calculated and it has been observed that some of the established gas ratios, viz. Graham?s ratio, Young?s ratio etc. have resulted in negative values in samples containing high amounts of methane. The modified gas ratios have been proposed which will be useful for predicting the pillar fires. These ratios may also be used for assessing the condition of fires in sealed-off areas.

TauTona Mine (the renamed Western Deep Levels East) is using a longwall mining method with stability pillars to extract the Carbon Leader Reef at a depth ranging from 2097 metres to 3456 metres below surface. Seismic activity and the complexity and hazards associated with negotiating geological features at great depth pose the most severe hazard to deep level gold mining in South Africa. It impacts negatively on safety and the profitability of the mining. The critical success factors in longwalling at depth are: ?Sound mining strategies and face shape control ?Ensuring follow behind development infrastructure is kept up to date ?Support system design as a strategy to effectively limit the serious effects of damaging seismicity. This paper describes the following: ?Implementation of the required mining strategies ?The evolution of a new stope support system and problems associated with its development and implementation. How this support system was adapted for the successful negotiation of major geological features with known seismic potential and problems encountered ?Current initiatives to optimize follow behind development infrastructure ?Current initiatives in designing a new gully support system and problems experienced with its development and implementation. Finally, this paper will deal with the way forward, briefly covering areas like the above-mentioned gully support system, the proposed phased introduction of technology, and the use of alternative mining layouts.

This paper analyses the impact of the uncertainty associated with the input parameters in a mine planning optimization model. A real example was considered to aid in the building of a mathematical model that represents the coal production process with reference to the mining, processing, and marketing of coal. This model was optimized using the linear programming concept whereby the best solution was perturbed by the stochastic behaviuor of one of the main parameters involved in the production process. The analysis of the results obtained permitted an evaluation of the risk associated with the best solution due to the uncertainty in the input parameters.

The current commodity boom is depleting the ore bodies at a rate not seen in the past. As the existing ore bodies get depleted, only the more inferior bodies are left for exploitation. This places an emphasis on beneficiation to upgrade the lower grade ore to high-grade feedstock for downstream processes. This paper discusses the role of dense medium separation in this quest for high-grade feedstock for the future. It covers the production and utilization of ferrosilicon and gives a future perspective of the technology. It concludes about the way ahead and the challenges facing the processing fraternity and mining industry.

The use of electrolyte additives to smoothen cathode deposits during copper deposition is practised worldwide. These additives absorb on the cathode surface and take part in the electrochemical crystallization process. However, these additives also affect the quality of the cathodes when they are inadequately controlled. Electrolyte additives used by Palabora are glue, thiourea, Avitone and chloride. Their effects were determined on cathode quality, the size of the current density region that gives the desired compact morphology, and current efficiency. This was done in a small-scale cell. Small cells have different hydrodynamics from industrial-scale cells, which makes it difficult to simulate the operation of industrial cells in a laboratory. The approach used here was to use a rotating cylinder cathode to attain controlled hydrodynamics. The rotation speed was chosen to give a diffusion layer thickness that is similar to that of an industrial-scale cell. It was shown that even fairly small changes in the additive levels can significantly affect the cathode morphology, and the current density range over which this morphology can be obtained. For several decades, the deep, gold-bearing reefs of the Witwatersrand basin have been mined predominantly according to layouts characterised by longwalls with strike pillars to provide regional support. During the past few years, a new generation of mining layouts has been introduced. These layouts are based on the concept of grid-type, scattered mining with dip pillars for regional support. As the extraction of the gold reefs extends to depths below 3500 m, the hazards associated with mining at these ultra-depths are expected to increase to unacceptable levels. Therefore, the question arises as to, which of the currently applied mining layouts is most acceptable for the economic and safe extraction of an ultra-deep orebody. The purpose of this paper is to describe a research investigation carried out to evaluate the degree of acceptability, from the rock engineering view point, of four currently used mining layouts for application at a depth-range of between 3500 and 5000 m. Pendant plusieurs décades, les filons d’or profonds du bassin du Witwatersrand ont été exploités d’une manière prédominante selon des dispositions caractérisées par des longues tailles avec des piliers directionnels pour donner un support local. Les dernières années ont vu la naissance d’une nouvelle génération de dispositions de mine. Ces dispositions sont basées sur le concept d’extraction type grille, éparpillée, avec des piliers au pendage pour le support local. Comme l’extraction des filons d’or va à des profondeurs en dessous de 3500m, il faut s’attendre à ce que les risques associés à l’exploitation à ces profondeurs extrêmes atteignent des niveaux inacceptables. Par conséquent, la question se pose de savoir laquelle des dispositions de mine couramment utilisées est la plus acceptable pour l’extraction rentable et sans danger d’un gisement ultra profond. Le but de l’étude présente est de décrire les recherches exécutées pour évaluer le degré d’acceptabilité, du point de vue d’ingénierie de roche, de quatre dispositions de mine couramment utilisées pour application à un rayon de profondeur entre 3500 et 5000m. Die tiefen, goldträchtigen Riffs des Witwatersrandbeckens wurden über einige Jahrzehnte hindurch vorwiegend nach jenen Layouts abgebaut, die von Langfrontstreben mit Schlagpfeilern charakterisiert waren, um regionale Unterstützung zu gewährleisten. Während der letzten Jahre wurde eine neue Generation von Grubenlayouts eingeführt. Diese Layouts basieren auf dem Konzept der Rasterfeld-Art, gestreuter Bergbau mit Neigungspfeilern für regionale Unterstützung. Es kann erwartet werden, daß auf Grund der Tatsache, daß sich die Extraktion der Goldriffs auf Tiefen unterhalb 3500 m verlagert, die Gefahren, die mit dem Bergbau an diesen Ultratiefen verbunden sind, sich auf ein nicht annehmbares Niveau erhöhen. Folglich erhebt sich die Frage, welche der gegenwärtig angewendete Abbaulayouts für die ökonomische und sichere Extraktion eines ultra-tiefen Erzkörpers am annehmbarsten ist. Zweck dieser Arbeit ist es, eine durchgeführte Untersuchung zu beschreiben, die vom Gesichtspunkt der Gesteinstechnik gesehen, vier gegenwärtig angewandte Abbaulayouts für den Einsatz in einem Tiefenbereich zwischen 3.500 und 5.000 m evaluiert.

We consider the Grubbs estimation of the precision of an online gauge. Typically, this type of estimation involves independent results from two or more reference instruments (sampling and laboratory analysis operations). The properties of the estimator are then independent of the product variability. However, the use of more than one reference instrument entails significant additional costs. The two-instrument Grubbs estimator, which is based on results from a gauge and a single reference instrument, has the disadvantage that its standard error is heavily dependent on the degree of product variability. We propose a new estimator that has a variance that is more or less independent of product variability. In fact, the variance is typically less than that of the Grubbs estimator based on the use of two reference instruments. In order to function successfully, our methodology requires some prior knowledge of the extent of product variability and of gauge precision. In practice, such prior knowledge is often available and it is a weakness of the traditional two - and three-instrument Grubbs methods that no use is made of such knowledge. The efficacy and robustness of the new method is illustrated by Monte Carlo simulation.

This paper traces the rise of South Africa's mining industry in the context of the different state forms that oversaw its development. It commences with the mining-led industrial revolution through four periods of conflict, each of which contributed to a deepening of the industrial base, with constant battles between domestic and foreign capital and labour, and the rise of both Afrikaner and African nationalism. The role of state-owned enterprises has been crucial in shaping this dynamic so that at its peak the public sector and leading mining houses constituted two massive centres of power. This was followed by a thirty-year period of neo-liberal experimentation. The current debate on the 'developmental state' is an attempt to reconstruct the state as a counterweight to capital. It is argued that while the country has moved toward inclusive political and economic institutions, these are both limited by deep 'extractive' characteristics. This transformation failure provides a fertile ground for populism that presents one of the biggest threats to inclusive growth. Cited examples point to the many ways that states have sought to deal with the bonanza that conversion of mineral non-resources into resources brings. Such greenfield resources on state land, or in areas where the state holds monopoly rights, do not present ownership issues. It is suggested that this is the route that South Africa should follow, as the alternative will be conflictual.

ERPM was formed in 1893 and as a result of its age, a large volume of data exists in a paper-based format and it was decided to electronically capture data in one of two critical mining areas?namely at Far East Vertical (FEV) Shaft Area (Lower Areas) and Hercules Shaft Area (Upper Areas). The life of mine is dependent on tonnage and grade from these areas. Geostatistical evaluation of the gold reserves has been applied on an ad hoc basis in the Hercules Shaft Area and on a continuous basis in the FEV area. This is the first evaluation using geostatistics that was performed on the Upper Areas. This paper is based on the premise that regardless of cut-off grades, geostatistical estimation (kriging) estimates and locates reserves better than ?traditional? methods e.g. polygonal method, inverse squared distance method and it endeavours to estimate and locate the high grade reserves in the Main Reef Leader of Upper Areas.

Fluctuating SO2 gas streams represent a difficult task for designers of SO2 removal systems (with respect to designing the plant), but in spite of the designers great efforts to solve the problems, the operation of such plants requires much care and attention. A fluctuating gas flow usually results from metallurgical smelting processes. Both gas composition and gas flow rate may vary. The first part of this paper outlines some existing technical solutions and presents the Pros and Cons of the different solutions. These solutions outline are: - Sulphuric acid plants operated with a preheater permanent in operation - Sulphuric acid plants with concentration increase of SO2 gas either using regenerative SO2 removal or cryogenic partial condensation of the SO2 - Sulphuric acid plants with additional burning of sulfur to increase SO2 content - Single-stage sulphuric acid plants followed by a tail gas system (which is) designed for periods of low SO2 input In the second part, this paper describes some existing technical solutions for removal of SO2 at low concentrations (i. e. less than 0.1 - 2 %-by volume), which could be used as tail gas treatment system for acid plants. While selecting an appropriate solution, special attention should be given to operating costs, which usually to a large extend depends on the type of absorption agent and the costs for disposal of the sulfur compound produced.

It is important to know the breakage mechanism in materials since this knowledge influences the results of subsequent grinding operations. There are two distinct failure mechanisms in breakage: one is tensile micro crack generation at low stresses, which leads to macroscopic failure by disintegration, and the other is formation of shear zones under heavier dynamic impact forces, which generates more fines as seen in crush zones in blasting. Tensile fracturing simply breaks the material into fragments. It is seen as the disintegration of the specimen into two or more separate fragments. This happens under the absence of lateral stresses and the material is free to expand. On the other hand, compressive-shear breakage produces finer fragments due to shear stresses. The first mechanism is observed in laboratory tensile and bending strength tests and the second mechanism is observed both in laboratory brittleness tests and in situ blasting operations under dynamic impact forces. The friability of rocks and ores can be determined by a brittleness test. A test apparatus to determine the friability value has been designed to suit limestone strength characteristics used in cement production. The friability and stored strain energy values of barite, marble, limestone and bauxite have been determined and compared with the corresponding Bond work index (Wi) and grindability index (G) of these materials. The physico-mechanical properties of the tested materials have also been determined to investigate their effect on friability and grinding. The relationships obtained between the indices were in surprisingly good agreement, with high correlations (0.99 and 0.97). The Bond work index and grindability index can therefore be estimated from the friability value, which can be determined more rapidly than the Bond test. But for certain rock types such as andesites the relationships does not hold. Key words: comminution, tensile stress, shear forces, brittleness test, strain energy.

This study investigates the application of computed order tracking with subsequent rotation domain averaging and statistical analysis, to the drag gearbox of a dragline used in a mining environment. Computed order tracking is a fault detection method developed to deal with the varying speed conditions often found in industry and has been proven effective in laboratory conditions. Its application to real situations, however, requires some adjustment to deal with issues such as inadequate speed data and the fact that the drag gear rotates in two directions. This provides a unique opportunity to observe the performance of the order tracking method in a bi-directional rotating environment, allowing an investigation of the relationships between the results obtained from each operating direction. A monitoring station was set up aboard the dragline and data was captured twice daily for a period spanning approximately one year. The data captured consisted of accelerometer and proximity sensor data. The key on the shaft triggers the proximity sensors, allowing speed and direction to be measured. The measured speed is interpolated by using various speed interpolation techniques. Then the interpolated speed is used to complete the order tracking procedure that resamples the vibration data with reference to the speed. The results indicate that computed order tracking can be successfully employed in real environments. Furthermore it is shown that the rotation direction that opens the gear-tooth crack gives a better indication of incipient failure. It is therefore important not to disregard either direction when monitoring rotating machinery of this kind.

Worldwide, the major Manganese ores can be separated into three different types: ?Oxidized ores (MnO2): in Australia, Gabon, Brazil,?. ?Semi-oxidized ores (Mn2O3): in South-Africa, Australia,?. ?Carbonated ore (MnCO3): in Ghana, South Africa, Kazhakstan?. The other Manganese ores are less rich but can be used locally or in the neighbour countries (China, Ukraina, India?). Since the beginning of the 20th Century, Manganese has played a big role in the steel industry process average usage ratio: 9,5 kg/mt of steel). The recent grow-up of this industry has led to an increase of Manganese ores demand. In parallel, several companies have increased their Manganese ore producing capacity. In this presentation, we explain the link between the main Manganese ores characteristics and the key different factors for an effective and low cost Mn alloys production (HCFeMn and SiMn): ?Chemistry ?Size ?Reactivity Then we will point out the advantages of Comilog ore and Sintec ® usages in various Manganese alloy metallurgical process compared with the other main ores and with the local ores. Some advised formulations for the different kinds of furnaces and alloys will be also discussed.

The composition of ferromanganese slag is very important as it determines the slag/metal equilibrium relations including MnO content of final slag, melting relations and slag viscosity. The slag composition is further expected to influence the process temperature. The properties of ferromanganese slags are suitably described by its basicity and A/S mass ratios. The influence of slag basicity has been discussed in the previous papers. The present paper will discuss the effect of Al2O3 on melting relations, viscosity and MnO-content of final slag. This discussion will be based on assessed thermochemical databases and a recently developed viscosity model.
