Optimum Coal Mine comprises numerous defunct, active, and future mining sections. The mine is primarily a large opencast coal mine; however, underground mining activities will be increasing steadily over the next five years. Opencast and underground mining activities have a significant impact on surface and groundwater resources. To ensure that the mine will be able to continue with its mining operations in the catchment, the extent of this impact requires that substantial intervention and mitigation measures need to be implemented to ensure the environmental integrity and economic use of the catchment's water resources. In developing a sustainable long-term mine water management strategy, numerous scenarios had to be analysed. The various scenarios are a combination of water and land management activities. The main components of the mine's integrated water management strategy include: ? Management of water recharge by continual and appropriate rehabilitation of disturbed land ? Beneficial re-use of impacted mine water for coal plant process water and mining operations ? Reclamation and desalination of remaining excess impacted mine water to potable standard. From the mine's long-term water balance, it is evident that the continued implementation of numerous water management actions is required to mitigate the water resources impact in a sustainable manner. In addition, the installation of a water reclamation plant at Optimum Coal Mine (15Ml/day) is a key step for the mine to achieve a zero impact target.

A computer-aid is described that is designed to calculate steady-state material balances for ore-dressing circuits. The program determines the material balance from a specification of the process condition. No mathematical models or data adjustment techniques are employed. As such the program complements existing simulation and material balance 'smoothing' packages. The process condition is specified using performance indicators. These are significant parameters in the industry with which all practising mineral processors are very familiar. The program employs an equation-oriented technique for material balancing and so has had to deal with the difficulties peculiar to that approach.

Namakwa Sands, an Anglo Operations Limited subsidiary, is a world-class producer of heavy minerals. A layer of duricrust imposes a pseudo-stratigraphy to the primary deposit and has sterilized part of the generally unconsolidated ore in the open cast mine. The bulk of this ore cannot be treated by the present infrastructure, which employs conventional mineral separation technology. The mineralogy of the cementing agent consists of magnesium and calcium silicates and minor carbonates in addition to clay minerals such as sepiolite and those from the smectite group. Although the duricrust ore is friable and can be easily crushed, the significant clay-sized slime fraction produced, in particular the highly sorptive sepiolite, adversely affects mineral separation. The geometallurgical challenge is to cost-effectively remove the slimes from the ore before it is delivered to the concentrator.

It is argued that the present value of the future corporate income tax flow derived from mineral exploitation may serve as a useful indicator in moving toward a taxation policy that would contribute optimally toward the greatest public benefit.The future stream of corporate income taxes depends largely on the mineral endowment, consisting of deposits now being mined, known unmined deposits, and unknown deposits.Unknown deposits may be estimated by geological inference. Both known and unknown deposits can be categorized according to grade and size, and divided into economic and uneconomic deposits on the basis of certain prices, costs, rate of return and taxation levels.Computer simulations can be run of discounted cash flow models at various taxation levels to show the impact of taxation changes on future tax revenues."

This paper discusses pilot and laboratory-scale metallurgical test work conducted on bulk samples from a low grade heavy mineral deposit and provides an overview of basic practical metallurgical techniques applied to ascertain the suitability of existing production plants to process material from this orebody. Previous investigations have shown this specific orebody to be more challenging in terms of mineral beneficiation as it has a high gangue mineral content. Test work was conducted on targeted stratigraphic units based on lithology and assay results to enable identification of the stratigraphic units portraying quality issues. Unit specific metallurgical pilot work has never been conducted on any of the RBM orebodies and is a new field currently being explored. During this investigation focus was placed on potential quality and yield issues for ilmenite product, with particular reference to CaO quality. A basic evaluation of zircon and rutile separability was also conducted. The test work was conducted using a comparative baseline methodology with metallurgical test work methods specifically aiming at mimicking the existing production plant as closely as possible. This enabled not only the likely metallurgical performance to be assessed but also indicated whether current plant design would be suitable to process the low grade ore types into products of acceptable quality at acceptable yields. The methods and findings discussed in this paper indicate that although there is considerable variation between different units, a blended feed can be successfully processed. With unit specific metallurgical data applied to the existing geological block model, expected yields and recoveries using current plant designs could be predicted.

Methods based on regionalized variables theory, commonly known as geostatistics, have been widely used since more than three decades to predict/estimate spatial distributed data, namely mineral resources, with quite good results. However, some restrictive theoretical assumptions, such as the need of some kind of stationarity of data and the linearity of the predictor/estimator, are often wrong options in many applications. An alternative approach based on a finite mixture modelling, or cluster weighted modelling (CWM) technique, is presented and compared, in its theoretical and practical aspects, with the geostatistical methodology. CWM is a general non-linear framework based on the estimation of joint density functions allowing the calculation of the conditional probability function of the target values given their locations. Validation tests are performed in a 2D case study, where testing data proceeds from a soil contaminated by a heavy metal. The results of ordinary kriging and CWM estimations show a very good agreement with actual data. The stress state on two slope profiles overlying an inclined surface with layer inclination of 50 and 150 are investigated. It is demonstrated that the induced stress state in an imbedded weak layer, exposed at the base of the slope, forms a zone of induced tensile vertical and horizontal stresses, which can lead to failure. The zone length depends on the slope angle and the angle of the inclined layers. L’état des contraintes sur deux profils en pente en superposition sur une surface inclinée avec une inclinaison de couche de 5o et 15o est étudié. L’étude présente démontre que l’état induit des contraintes dans une couche faible insérée, exposée au bas de la pente, forme une zone de contraintes de traction induites horizontales et verticales, qui peut amener à la rupture. La longueur de la zone dépend de l’angle de la pente et l’angle des couches inclinées. Die Druckvorkommnisse zweier Hangprofile auf einer schrägen Fläche mit einer Schichtneigung von 5º und 15º wurden untersucht. Es zeigte sich, dass die induzierten Druckvorkommnisse in einer eingebetteten schwachen Schicht, die am Hangfuße offen liegt, einen Gürtel induzierter vertikaler und horizontaler Zugkräfte bildet, die zum Zusammenbruch führen können. Die Gürtellänge ist von der Neigung des Hanges und der Neigung der schrägen Schichten abhängig.

You probably haven't all had the opportunity of reading it, but you very soon will. I found it interesting to note that the results predicted were surpassed in the operation of the plant to date. The actual results obtained are significantly good, I think. Any process which, in this country, increases production and decreases costs, is to be welcomed, particularly when it is so necessary for South Africa almost to bend over backwards to utilise every avenue available in order to increase the scope of the production for overseas' markets, of her metallurgical and mineral potential. In lighter vein-and there is no reason why we should always be so serious-I am glad to see that, in a scientific journal like this, such words as the American word 'crud' which I have been picked out about so often, because my grandchildren use it, is now given an aura of respectability. Since 2005 Two Rivers Platinum Mine has set out on an initiative to actively monitor and control ground conditions on a daily basis, by making use of borehole cameras and pro-actively amending the support and mining strategies based on day-to-day observations of the hangingwall conditions. Today the borehole camera observations form part of the Rock Engineering Department?s daily function, and the size and frequency of falls of ground and ensuing accident rates have been drastically reduced since implementation of the system. The Two Rivers Platinum fall-of-ground management system aims to support 100% of the possible fallout thickness, based on ongoing data gathering and interpretation, thereby ensuring safety and limiting support cost.

Many industries base their decisions on the assaying of tiny analytical sub-samples. The problem is that most of the time several sampling and sub-sampling stages are required before the laboratory provides its ultimate assays using advanced chemical and physical methods of analysis. As long as each sampling and sub-sampling stage is the object of due diligence using the Theory of Sampling it is likely that the integrity of the sought after information has not been altered and the generated database is still capable to fulfil its informative mission. Unfortunately, more often than not, unawareness of the basic properties of heterogeneous materials combined with the unawareness of stringent requirements listed in the theory of sampling, lead to the conclusion that massive discrepancies may be observed between the expensive outcome of a long chain of sampling and analytical custody, and reality. There are no areas that are more vulnerable to such misfortune than sampling and assaying for trace amounts of constituents of interest in the environment, in high purity materials, in precious metals exploration, food chain, chemicals and pharmaceutical products. Without the preventive suggestions of the theory of sampling serious difficulties may arise when making Gaussian approximations or even log-normal manipulations in the subsequent interpretations. A complementary understanding of Poisson processes injected in the theory of sampling may greatly help the practitioner understand structural sampling problems and prevent unfortunate mistakes from being repeated over and over until a crisis is reached. This paper presents an overview of the theoretical, practical and economic difficulties often vastly underestimated in the search for quantifying trace amounts of valuable or unwelcome components.

This paper covers the commercial development of gravity separation of fine particles using a Lamella High Shear Rate REFLUX? Classifier (REFLUX? Classifier), focusing primarily on coal applications. The REFLUX? Classifier is a fluidized bed device that incorporates a system of closely spaced parallel inclined channels located above the fluidized bed. These channels make it possible to achieve a significant suppression of the effects of particle size, resulting in a highly effective separation on the basis of density. The improved gravity separation performance is shown to be remarkably high, with a significant reduction in the variation of separation density with particle size, and a significant reduction in the change in Ecart probable error (Ep) with size. The first full commercial-sized units of the REFLUX? Classifier were field-tested in late 2009 in coal applications. More recently, the technology has been applied in fine particle separation in minerals applications and there are a number of full-sized units operating in chrome applications in South Africa. Initially, pilot-scaled units (typically the RC?300) were trialled in iron ore, mineral sands, and manganese plants amongst other minerals, typically after other technologies failed to achieve the desired results. Currently a number of laboratories globally are carrying out more testing in minerals applications. More than 50 RC? units are now operating in coal and minerals applications. This paper introduces the REFLUX? Classifier technology, identifies commercial applications, and gives some commercial results.

The Pooncarie Project is located in the Murray Basin region of Australia. This region is a potential new mineral sands province. Due to the geological environment and the lithology of the deposit, these deposits have some technical challenges that need to be addressed prior to their successful development. Within the Pooncarie Project the Ginkgo deposit will be developed first. The technical challenges it presents include its geographical isolation, the requirement to remove substantial quantities of overburden as well as the processing issues raised by the highly weathered nature of the ilmenite family of minerals. Ore characterization bench scale testwork and bulk sample pilot plant programmes have been carried out and the data obtained used to design flowsheets for both the wet plant and mineral separation plant circuits with the flexibility to enable these plants to handle the variable heavy mineral assemblage. In addition to the solving of the processing challenges, technical issues such as removal of overburden for the minimum unit cost, the use of hyper saline water in the dredge pond and the provision of infrastructure, have had to be addressed. None the less, the orebodies making up the Pooncarie Project have many positive features including low slimes content, good rutile and zircon grades and the ability to recover most of the ilmenite family of minerals into acceptable TiO2pigment feedstocks. The development of the project is set to proceed with the establishment of mining operations on the Ginkgo orebody feeding a mineral separation plant at Broken Hill. The initial shipment of products is expected to occur in early 2005.

Western Deep Levels (North) is a deeplevel, longwall gold mine. Severe strata control problems and high rates of elastic closure, resulting in high rates of energy release, are associated with mining at depths of up to 3 500 metres. To assist in controlling these aspects of mine design and safety, a waste backfilling system has been designed and commissioned. The integration of such a system into an existing, producing longwall brings many problems of logistics, organization, planning and control. It is the purpose of this paper to examine these aspects of fill management, and to describe some of the practical problems involved with the integration of this project into the mining environment. Although many of the rock mechanics and soil mechanics aspects of backfilling systems are common there are specific problems involved which apply to longwall systems. Very strict guidelines are required for planning personnel to design their backfilling systems for a particular situation. These aspects are examined, and basic models developed which can be used without the necessity of comprehensive input from rock mechanics. A summary of the financial implications is included, and these are examined with regard to possible future applications and expansion of waste filling.

Good blasting practices based on the careful application of explosive energy lead to significantly safer mining operations. Case studies demonstrate how the selection of the correct charge mass, explosive type and round design are vital for extracting the exact amount of rock required and preventing spurious damage to the remaining rock mass. In other cases the explosives are applied to precondition the rock mass, design rockburst resistant support, prevent damage to important excavations and reduce the exposure of miners to unsafe conditions. The Hybrid Stress Blasting Model is used to understand the explosive rock interaction and to illustrate and contrast good and bad blasting practices. In all cases, good supervision is required to continue safe mining according to the design. Primary roof support represents the first line of defence against rockrelated falls of ground in underground mines, and improper utilization or misunderstanding of the applicability and behaviour of primary support can be costly from a safety standpoint. This is a major concern for underground mines, as roof support is the single most costly expense from a mining operational perspective. This is further backed by the evidence that, in the USA, hundreds of injuries and fatalities still occur each year because of rib, roof, and massive roof falls. Additionally, the fully-grouted passive rebar, fully-grouted tension rebar, and resin-assisted mechanical anchor bolts, which constitute a large portion (89%) of the 68 million bolts installed each year in underground mines in the USA can vary in cost quite dramatically. To mitigate this concern a study was conducted in 2010 by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, in conjunction with Southern Illinois University of Carbondale, to assess the performance of primary roofbolts in underground coal mines for improved safety and cost. This was accomplished using underground roofbolt monitoring solutions, field data, and numerical modelling to better understand the quasi-static behaviour of underground coal mine roofs and the response behaviour of the bolts. In particular, over 170 instrumented extensometers, closure meters, shear meters, fully-grouted passive rebar, fully-grouted tension rebar, and resin-assisted mechanical roofbolts were installed at three coal mines across the USA. Of these three mines, two used the room and pillar extraction method and the other used the longwall extraction method. There was no evidence to indicate a difference in performance of the active primary roofbolts compared with the passive primary roofbolts. Additionally, in the initial loading phase, the active bolts showed no difference in loading, indicating that tension bleed-off is of more of a concern than originally thought. Lastly, for the initial computer modelling studies, challenges still remain in obtaining a good match to the in situ bolt measurements and replicating the discontinuous roof rock and in situ bolt behaviour over time.

The Søderberg electrode was invented about 95 years ago by the company Elektrokjemisk, later known as ELKEM. It is still the most commonly used electrode system in submerged-arc furnaces for ferroalloys, platinum smelting, and slag cleaning operations. The size of the furnaces and electrodes has increased over the years and electrode diameters up to 2000 mm are today in use. Such large electrodes can be challenging to manage, and large electrodes are also more demanding when it comes to the electrode paste used in the electrodes. Although electrode sizes and equipment around the electrodes have changed, the main principles of the Søderberg electrode processes are the same. To assists in proper understanding of the electrode processes and to optimize electrode management, Elkem has developed several mathematical tools covering various aspect of the process. Both temperatures and thermal stresses can be calculated during dynamic conditions. The paper demonstrates, with examples, how the tools are used in both education and as practical input to improved electrode performance.

The Elizabeth Bay aeolian deposit in Namibia comprises a sedimentary package of diamondiferous grits that have been deposited, reworked and concentrated to various degrees by dominant southerly winds. Diamond concentration in these deposits is highly variable and often unpredictable. The deposit is marginal from an economic perspective and therefore requires selective mining which in turn requires correct sampling and accurate estimation. Three methods of sampling have been used at Elizabeth Bay for mineral resource estimation: (i) pit samples utilizing an excavator to produce a sample 1 to 3 metres deep with a 10 to 20 m2 footprint, (ii)GB50 grab sampling with a 3.34 m2 footprint and (iii) a BG36 bucket auger drill with a 5 m2 footprint. Pit sampling, being easy to execute, has been the most widely used despite a limited penetration ability and, at times, questionable integrity. The GB50 grab sampling tool was tested at Elizabeth Bay and although it had better penetration ability and sample integrity, it struggled with cemented horizons. No sample optimization was conducted prior to the GB50 grab sampling. The latest phase of sampling was conducted using a BG36 bucket auger drill which is capable of penetrating thick overburden, penetrate cemented horizons and provides an acceptable sample support size. Geostatistical simulation methods were applied to establish the optimum sampling parameters required to estimate a mineral resource at an indicated level of confidence. The results show that a 5 m2 sample support size is adequate and that a 50 m 100 m sample configuration is optimal. Sample data obtained from the three methods confirms that the BG36 bucket auger tool combined with the parameters identified in this exercise produce the best results for diamond resource estimation.

Spiral concentrators are compact, cost-effective and generally efficient gravity concentration separators for a wide range of applications (for example: coal, beach sands, iron ore, chromite and tantalite). Large mineral processing plants consist of thousands of spiral concentrators resulting in large plant footprints (capital intensive) and the adjustment of splitters is time consuming, impractical and is in many cases neglected?high capacity (HC) spiral concentrators aim to address these shortcomings. As a result Exxaro Namakwa Sands is currently investigating high capacity spiral technology for the spiral circuit upgrade at the primary concentrator plants (PCPs). This article summarizes the rougher spiral performance evaluation that was conducted on different types of spiral concentrators (the traditional MG4 spiral concentrator and the high capacity (HC) spiral concentrator) under different feed conditions. In addition, the effect of slimes on the spiral concentrator performance was also investigated. Slimes rheology was linked to the poor concentrator performance at the higher slimes concentrations. The test campaign shows a sacrifice in recovery under design-feed conditions can be expected when using high capacity spiral concentrators in the rougher stage when compared to traditional spiral technology currently in use. Both spiral concentrators show a detrimental impact of slimes on the performance, but the high capacity spiral concentrator is more sensitive to the higher slimes conditions.

In most exploration or mining grade data-sets, the presence of outliers or extreme values represents a significant challenge to mineral resource estimators. The most common practice is to cap the extreme values at a predefined level. A new capping approach is presented that uses QA/QC coarse duplicate data correlation to predict the real data coefficient of variation (i.e., error-free CV). The cap grade is determined such that the capped data has a CV equal to the predicted CV. The robustness of the approach with regard to original core assay length decisions, departure from lognormality, and capping before or after compositing is assessed using simulated data-sets. Real case studies of gold and nickel deposits are used to compare the proposed approach to the methods most widely used in industry. The new approach is simple and objective. It provides a cap grade that is determined automatically, based on predicted CV, and takes into account the quality of the assay procedure as determined by coarse duplicates correlation.
