Liquid epoxy and polyurethanes are an excellent choice for whatever the aggressiveness of the substance transported and whatever the harmful outside influences, maximum protection is required. They can be used as coatings on all kind of pipelines varying from the mainline coating to the field joint coating. Compared with traditional systems like dual layer FBE and 3-layer polyolefin there are some benefits to be considered like easiness of repairs, amount of coats, application temperature and film thickness. The interior coating renders the pipe surface so much smoother that considerable savings can be realized in pump stations. Apart from the interior of the pipeline, the industry is faced with new challenges like higher operating temperatures of lines and an emphasis on product benefits in order to save money. The high-resolution three-dimensional (3-D) seismic reflection data acquired for Impala Platinum between 1998 and 2002 in the western Bushveld Igneous Complex form an integral part of Impala?s mine planning and development programme. These data are of sufficiently high quality to provide unprecedented 3-D models of the geological structure of the Merensky Reef and UG2Chromitite Reef, from which the mine deduces the size, geometry and distribution of mineable blocks. Conversely, the seismic data details zones of un-mineable ground caused by structural disturbances in the form of potholes, fault zones and pegmatoid intrusions. Furthermore, variations in dip and strike are well imaged, allowing the mine planners to optimize the mine design and layout. Current interpretation work is focused on enhancing the accuracy of these geological model seven further through the analysis of ?seismic trace attributes.? Preliminary testing on the Impala Platinum 3-D seismic volume has shown that attribute analysis has the potential to illuminate a number of geological reef disturbances that are otherwise ?invisible? in the original seismic time volume. Potential areas of improvement include inter alia: ?Improved definition of major fault zones ?Improved definition of zones of reef depression (?slumping?) ?Identification of reef terracing and/or reverse dip.. The common law requires an employer to take reasonable steps for the safety of employees. In general, the duty of care means that the employer, acting personally or through its employees or agents, must take reasonable care for the safety of its employees (Van Deventer v Workmen?s Compensation Commissioner; 1962 (4) SA 28 T; Oosthuizen v Homegas (Pty) Ltd 1992 (3) SA 463 T).The duty of care includes the provision of safe premises, safe machinery and tools and a safe system of work. The obligation is not an absolute one, but is restricted by the concept of reasonableness. The common law duty may, in certain cases, include the assessment of hazards and risks. 2 International law Great emphasis has been placed in the Western world on the prevention of occupational diseases and injuries. Detailed statutes and regulations govern specific industries in many countries. See, e.g. the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations of the United Kingdom and various regulations applicable to the use of asbestos and lead, fire protection, mines and quarries, petroleum, etc. Risk management is an important part of managing health and safety. In the United Kingdom, the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations, 1999, require every employer to make a ?suitable and sufficient assessment of the risks to health and safety of his employees to which they are exposed whilst they are at work?. The rebound phenomenon, which occurs during rockfalls when a rock block impacts with a slope surface, is influenced by several parameters related not only to the slope material but also to the block and the kinematics. The paper presents a small-scale testing campaign undertaken at the LMR (EPFL) to better understand and quantify the bouncing of blocks on granular slopes. The influence of some factors related to the ground material, the block and the kinematics is examined. Bei Steinschlägen wird die Flugbahn eines stürzenden Felsbrockens maßgeblich durch den Abprall vom Hang bestimmt. Der Rückprall hängt von verschiedenen Parametern ab, wobei nicht nur das Hangmaterial sondern auch Blockeigenschaften und Kinematik eine große Rolle spielen. Zum besseren Verständnis dieses Phänomens und seiner Quantifizierung werden am LMR (EPFL) kleinmaßstäbliche Versuchskampagnen auf granulären Materialien durchgeführt. Der vorliegende Artikel stellt die Versuche vor und untersucht den Einfluss verschiedener Boden-, Block- und kinematischer Parameter. Le phénomène de rebond qui se présente lors de l’impact d’un bloc rocheux sur la surface d’un versant dépend non seulement des caractéristiques du terrain, mais aussi de facteurs relatifs au bloc et à la cinématique. L’article présente une campagne d’essais sur modèle réduit entreprise au LMR (EPFL) afin de mieux comprendre et quantifier l’impact de blocs sur des matériaux granulaires. L’influence de divers paramètres relatifs au sol, au bloc et à la cinématique est mise en évidence.

This article presents possibilities of reducing methane emission to the atmosphere in working mines in Jastrzebie Coal Company by means of proecological solution. They form a new approach towards the problem of rational and effective use of natural resources both in economical and environmental respect. Power and thermal energy for underground air conditioning in mining excavations are produced from the methane, which is drained out of the mine for safety reasons.

This study investigates the use of appropriate seating systems for the control of whole-body vibration exposure in vehicles used in the SA mining industry. Six suspension seats were tested with six test subjects to determine the most suitable seat for an articulated dump truck based on the EM1 requirement in ISO 7096 (2000) standards. Transmissibility functions were measured in the laboratory using the newly commissioned Dynamic Seat Testing Facility with two excitation levels of 1m/s2 and 2 m/s2 r.m.s. in the 0.5 - 30 Hz frequency range. SEAT values were calculated for two input spectrums, the EM1 input spectrum specified as in ISO 7096:2000 and measured road vibration data measured on a typical articulated dump truck. The averaged SEAT value calculations indicated that not one of the seats will qualify as an ISO 7096 (2000) suspension seat but that it is possible to select a seat that will significantly reduce the vibration the driver will be exposed to.

Platinum-based alloys are being developed for high temperature and special applications for good corrosion and oxidation resistance. The microstructures are similar to those of nickel-based super alloys, and comprise ~Pt3Al particles in a Pt-based matrix. After assessing binary alloys, the best candidate system was found to be Pt-Al. Testing and selection of alloys based on Pt-Al were undertaken, where the ternary additions comprised Ru, Cr, Ta, Ir and Ti. As well as phase characterization work, mechanical and oxidation tests were undertaken. The best alloys were found to be Pt-Al-Cr and Pt-Al-Ru. However, the volume fraction of the ~Pt3Al was only around40 per cent instead of the ~70 per cent found in Ni-based super alloys. To increase this, trials were conducted on a range of Pt-Al-Cr-Ru alloys, the optimum composition being Pt80:Al14:Cr3:Ru3.Currently, further additions are being made to the quaternary alloys to change selected properties. As well as developing the alloys themselves, another part of the project is to compile a thermodynamic database using Thermo-Calc?. Phase diagram work has been undertaken so that the results can be input to Thermo-Calc? so that the descriptions of the phases can be optimized. The final database will allow the phases and compositions of selected alloys to be derived, thus predicting the alloys? components without necessarily undertaking further experimental work. This will aid the development of the alloys and will be a useful tool to the final developers of the alloys. This paper focuses on the role of the coal mine surveyor at the start of the 21st century. It demonstrates that surveyors must look beyond their legal appointment and pursue opportunities to add value at an operational or corporate level of the company. It also exposes the shortfall of statutory appointments in defining the surveyor?s role in terms of key business drivers of the company. One such an opportunity is the potential role of the surveyor in mineral accounting and quality assurance to meet mine requirements, market specifications and standards pertaining to corporate governance and reporting. Finally, some thoughts are expressed on what can be done to elevate current practice to best practice and how to achieve this goal

Sustainable development is one of the central themes of the work of the World Health Organization; chemical safety is one of its important components. For more than 25 years, WHO has had specialized units for assisting member countries in dealing with their problems in chemical safety. For one of the units involved, International Programme on Chemical Safety, a reorientation is in progress to make best use of existing resources, and to prioritise the work to optimally correspond to the needs of the member countries. The risk assessment work of IPCS, and specifically, the work on chromium and chromium compounds, are discussed.

In 1999, Eramet bought the ferromanganese plants in Porsgrunn and Sauda (Norway) and Marietta (USA). With an ownership in the Comilog mine, the plants will operate with a high amount of Comilog ore. The properties of Comilog ore are reviewed and compared to a number of industrial operations. Important ore properties are chemical and mineralogical analyses, CO reactivity and mechanical strength. The advantage of Comilog ore is its contribution to lower energy and coke consumption. However, special precautions must be taken regarding the amount of fines and water introduced in the furnace, as Comilog ore is more porous compared to other Mn ores.

Experiments were conducted to study the influence of temperature, particle size and ore/coke ratio on the kinetics of reduction. The rate of reduction increased with temperature. The reduction of iron was completed at shorter time intervals at temperature above 1000ºC. Usually the reduction of chromium commenced after the reduction of iron was almost complete. Reduction was controlled by diffusion at low temperatures and by chemical reaction at higher temperatures. The nature of the reducing agent had a very significant influence on the rate of reduction. The study showed that chromium was converted into the carbide during reduction. Increasing the size of the reducing agent increased the rate of reduction initially. After a critical size, the rate of reduction decreased. However, increasing the size of the ore particle decreased the rate of reduction, initially. Beyond a critical size, it increased. An optimum particle size of the chromite ore and that of coke must be chosen, particularly in the production of agglomerates to achieve maximum degree of reduction.

Ferroalloys are integral part of steel melting process. The purpose of using ferroalloys is three fold e.g. killing of steel, modifying the slag composition and steel alloying. Amount of ferroalloys used for alloying is subject to requirements of steel properties e.g. yield strength, ductility, formability etc. Variety of ferroalloys (some-times pure metal) is used by steel industries depending upon their techno-economic feasibility. Size, chemistry and modes of addition of ferroalloys are suitably engineered to bring in operational consistency and cost benefits. Of late, Tata Steel has tried out a few ferroalloys for the first time with interesting results to meet the specific requirements of high strength interstitial free (IF) and micro-alloyed steels. Some of these ferroalloys have been put into regular use with complete or partial replacement of ferroalloys used earlier. Size of one of the ferroalloys has also been modified without any other adverse effects. This paper summarizes requirements of ferroalloys for the steel industry with special emphasis on recent trials.

In 2002 a coal dust explosions occurred in the Polish collieries “Jas-Mos” and “Rydultowy” in the Upper Silesia coal basin. In the “Jas-Mos” colliery the coal dust explosion was initiated in the face of gallery by explosives and causing ten death. The stone dust barrier extinguished the flame, stopped the explosion development and saved forty nine miners working in that area. In the “Rydultowy” colliery methane inflammation caused three deaths and seven serious burns and ignited the coal dust explosion. The coal dust explosion was stopped by stone dust barrier and did not cause any victims itself. This paper presents the investigation carried out by the Central Mining Institute Experimental Mine “Barbara” and shows that the stone dust barriers remain still a basic mean for suppression of coal dust explosion in mines. The investigation were aimed at determining the cause of explosion and circumstances that led to their propagation. The evaluation of the state of dust explosion hazard in the areas of accidents have been performed, and the range of flame estimated.

In Canada’s metal mines, ventilation, which requires electricity to operate the fans and fossil fuel for heating, accounts for a significant portion of the overall mine’s underground power consumption. Mine ventilation systems are usually designed near the end of the mine design process and often designed for the ‘worst-case-scenario’ with respect to ventilation demand. In Canada’s metal mines this is commonly dictated by either diesel equipment usage or heat management considerations. Once designed, mine ventilation systems tend to operate at this peak level throughout the operating life of the mine. This is despite there being significant periods when this quantity is not required this is done mainly due to lack of appropriate ventilation controls. Consequently, such systems are inefficient and wasteful and this must be changed if mining operations are to remain competitive while meeting increasingly more stringent regulations of underground environmental conditions. The advances in computing power and modelling software now make it possible to design, model and schedule a mine from opening to closure. The tools used for this include several disparate types of software. A developing trend is to design and plan the mine using orebody modelling software, followed by using discrete event simulation to predict production and evaluate various operating scenarios. It seems that again ventilation design is not being integrated into this process. Although, several modelling packages exist for ventilation design, little work has been done on integrating ventilation modelling into the overall life cycle plan of the mine. This paper will present a discussion of the work where the authors are attempting to integrate discrete event simulation for mine planning with ventilation modelling to predict the ventilation requirements for the operating life of the mine.

A colloquium on 'Developments in the Mechanization of Mining Operations' was held in, conjunction with the 1984 Electra Mining Exhibition, at the Milpark Holiday Inn in Johannesburg on 19th September, 1984. An attendance of close on 200 delegates was testimony to the popularity of the subject. The delegates included a number of visitors from abroad, including senior members of the management of foreign companies and a member of the Council of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, United Kingdom. Both the local and foreign press was also represented.

The Gordonsville Operation of Pasminco US Inc. along with the Center for Advanced Mineral and Metallurgical Processing (CAMP) at Montana Tech studied, developed and implemented a pilot scale hydrometallurgical facility for the industrial recovery of germanium and gallium. This paper describes the joint testing and engineering program that culminated in this successful process. 1. Introduction The Pasminco US Inc. (PAS), Gordonsville Operation, has been producing zinc concentrate continuously since 1975. Within the zinc concentrate, several byproduct elements were found to be significantly concentrated including gallium and germanium. The gallium and germanium replace zinc and other metals within the crystal lattice structure of the zinc mineral (sphalerite) and are concentrated in the same manner as the zinc mineral. This concentrate is then sent to the Pasminco Clarksville Zinc Refinery for further processing. Within the hydrometallurgical zinc-processing plant at Clarksville, a residue is formed that contains a majority of the impurities that would otherwise contaminate or hinder the zinc process. Approximately 5,000 tons of residue is formed annually containing approximately 0.80% gallium and 0.60% germanium along with significant quantities of iron, zinc, silica, and lead. Pasminco currently sells this residue for the germanium value. Until recently, no revenue for the gallium was obtained from the sale of the residue.

After 1990, a great process of re-organisation and economic reform has occurred in the Romanian mining sector and especially in the pitcoal mining in the Jiu Valley. This process has included both legislation and the main aspects for getting an economic efficiency in the environment issues and for dealing the problems with social impact. Accordingly, starting with the year 1993 a new mining method has been introduced to turn efficient the pitcoal mining, and we speak about mining with caved in bed. This method has two variants: - with transverse strips and caved in bed; - with long face and caved in bed. Each of the above-mentioned variants has in turn several subdivisions, depending on how the longwall is prepared and on other characteristics. By using this method, the output has increased compared to other mining methods. The main safety aspects concerning caved in mining refer to: - great emissions of methane; - technical aspects (a mining method system, supports, discharging process); - pressure driving (analysed for the case of mining with long face, with transverse strips as well for the case of transverse strips when mining a subsequent sublevel).

ABSTRACT: When considering the rock stress component of rock mechanics design, the basic procedure is to consider the pre-existing stress-state in the rock mass and then estimate the disturbance to this stress state as a result of engineering excavation. Failure criteria are applied to the final stress state to establish whether failure will occur. However, during the evolution of the stress state, the failure locus may be reached before the anticipated failure state and, in this case, failure will occur unexpectedly. This indicates that the complete stress path (defined as the variations in magnitudes and orientations of the stress tensor components resulting from engineering-induced or natural changes) must be considered. We list a set of stress path principles with their corollaries and then introduce a new and powerful method for simultaneously illustrating changes in the six independent components of the stress tensor. This method plots the magnitudes of the principal stresses above their orientational paths on the hemispherical projection, to provide a three-dimensional stress path locus for each of the three principal stress components. In connection with this presentational device, we illustrate a number of concepts associated with the stress path in rock engineering. For example, we show how the minor principal stress approaches zero at an unsupported excavation face, the interchange of the trajectories of two principal stresses when their magnitudes become equal, and the influence of the bounds on the principal stresses given by strength criteria. RESUME: Si on s’interesse à la composante “contrainte” lors d’un dimensionnement en mécanique des roches, la méthode de base consiste à considérer l’état de contrainte pré-existant dans le massif rocheux, puis d’estimer la perturbation à cet état générée par l’excavation projetée. Des critères de rupture sont appliqués à l’état de contrainte final pour établir si une rupture va se produire. Cependant, lors de l’évolution de l’état de contrainte, la surface critique peut être atteinte ce qui provoquera une rupture anticipée et, dans ce cas, cette dernière sera inattendue. Cela indique que le chemin de contrainte complet (défini par les variations de l’intensité et de l’orientation des composantes du tenseur des contraintes liées à des causes anthropiques ou naturelles) doit être pris en compte. Nous présentons un ensemble de règles pour les chemins de contraintes ainsi que leurs corollaires et, ensuite, nous introduisons une méthode, nouvelle et puissante, pour présenter simultannement les changements des six composantes du tenseur des contraintes. Cette méthode consiste à tracer l’intensité des contraintes principales sur le chemin d’orientation des contraintes à l’aide d’une projection hémisphérique afin d’obtenir le lieu, en trois dimensions, de chaque contrainte principale. En relation avec cet outil de représentation, nous illustrons certains concepts associés au chemin de contrainte en ingénierie au rocher. Par exemple, nous montrons comment la contrainte mineure tend vers zero à la surface d’une excavation sans soutenement, le changement de direction des deux contraintes principales quand leur intensité deviennent égales, et l’influence des conditions aux limites sur les contraintes fournies par un critère de rupture. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Bei ingenieurmassigen Taetigkeiten in Felsgesteinen ist es noetig die ungestoerten Gesteins Stress Componenten, die vor einem anthropogen Eingriff im Gestein vorhanden waren, zu kennen und erst dann Vorhersagen ueber Stoerung des Stress Zustandes, der durch einen ingenieurmaessigen Eingriff hervorgerufen wird, herzuleiten. Kriterien fuer das Versagen werden im letzten Stadium, des Stress Zustandes angewendet, um zu erfahren ob ein Versagen wohl eintreten wird. Es ist jedoch zu beachten, dass waehrend des Stress Aufbaus ein oertliches Versagen eintreten kann, welches vor dem eigentlichen, erwarteten Versagens Zustand auftritt. Diese Moeglichkeit weist darauf hin, dass der gesammte “Stress Path” (definiert durch die Variationen der Stress Tensor Komponenten in Richtung und Groesse, hervorgerufen durch ingenieurmaessig hervorgerufene oder natuerlich Vorgaenge) betrachtet werden muss. Wir fuehren eine Liste der “Stress Path” Prinzipien auf und stellen dann eine neue und wirksame Methode zur gleichzeitigen Darstellung der sechs unabhaegigen Komponenten des Stress Tensors vor. Diese Methode stellt die Groesse der “Principal Stresses” in Abhaengigkeit von ihrem rauemlichen Weg auf einer hemispherischen Projektion dar und erlaubt hiermit eine drei dimensionale Darstellung fuer jeden Ort des “Stress Path’s” in die drei Haupt Stress Komponenten. Im Zusammenhang mit der hier gegebenen Darstellungsart, verdeutlichen wir eine Reihe von Konzepten in der Felsmechanik. Wir zeigen zum Beispiel, wie der “Minor Principal Stress” Null zustrebt an einer Wand von einer nicht abgestuetzten Ausschachtung, den Austausch von Trajektorien zweier “Principal Stresses” wenn ihre Groessen sich gleichen, und den Einfluss der Groesse von “Principal Stresses” bei gegebenen Kriterien des Festgkeits Versagens.

Two different methods of fuzzy multiple criteria decision making have been proposed to solve the problem of mining method selection in the paper titled ?Mining method selection by multiple criteria decision making tool, by Bitarafan and Ataei. This problem is really important and also difficult to solve because of the need of handling many criteria simultaneously in the process of decision making. Bitarafan and Ataei have selected 15 criteria for the case study in their paper and those criteria have not been clustered/grouped yet. The number of selected criteria is only 15, although there are more criteria that should be handled in a real case, because they have used Saaty?s method in the section ?Fuzzy multiple attribute decision making? in their paper. Saaty?s method considers the pair wise comparison of criteria and uses random indexed which have already been derived and published. Available random indexes, however, have been derived for maximum 15 criteria so far.
