This report describes dredging and processing of sand and gravel from a glacial-fluvial deposit in the Raccoon River valley near West Des Moines, Iowa. Preliminary cleaning and separation of the sand and gravel at the dredge site with subsequent transportation to separate plants and the production and disposal of the various grades of aggregate material are also described. The geology of the deposit is summarized. A tabulated summary of costs in units of labor, power, and supplies is included.

The literature on radium is already voluminous, but mcuh of it is too technical to be intelligible to the average reader, and there is no single publication that covers certain economic features of the radium industry. As a result of the renewed interest in the possibilities of domestic carnotite deposits a number of requests have been made to the Bureau of Mines for information, more particularly with reference to the business aspects of the industry. In order to meet this apparent need, the present paper has been prepared from material available in the files of the bureau. The technical data are compiled from various sources and are believed to be reasonably dependable, but the attempt has been not so much to achieve meticulous scientific accuracy as to brim; together facts of industrial significance and popular interest. GENERAL DESCRIPTION Radium is a brilliant white metal that melts sharply at about 700°C. and volatilizes appreciably at that temperature. With an estimated specific gravity of nearly 6.0, it is more than twice as heavy as aluminum and 25 per cent lighter than irons. Although it has been isolated in its metallic state, it is not used in that form, partly because it tarnishes rapidly even in dry air (forming a nitride), partly because of the greater expense of reducing it to metal, and partly because of the difficulty of dealing with such minute quantities of material. It is used always in the form of its compounds, the most important of which from the vie point of utilization are the bromide, chloride, and sulphate.

The Belize economy recorded modest growth during 1980; the growth of the gross domestic product (GDP) in real terms was between 1% and 2%. At current prices, the 1980 GDP reached $108 million2. This output was largely attributed to the performance of a few industries, mostly nonminerals. Such performance improved significantly the balance of payments situation by reducing the deficit from $19 million in 1979 to $4 million in 1980. The rate of inflation was an estimated 18% in 1980 and would have been greater if not for a conservative monetary policy and price control on a number of essential items. Expert earnings increased $43 million, or 50%, from the 1979 level. After increasing more than 25% in 1979, imports increased only 6% in 1980 to a level of $141 million owing to the decline in investment and stabilization of petroleum prices. The balance of trade deficit was $9.8 million in 1980, a marked improvement from the 1979 level of $45.1 million. The mineral output for Belize accounted for only a fraction of 1% of the GDP. Such activity was limited to the production of limestone, marl, and sand and gravel, all of which were primarily used in construction of the Northern Highway between Orangewalk and Belize City. Mineral resources are deficient or nonexistent in Belize for the majority of metals and nonmetals, although the Government and others continue to believe that petroleum must exist in Belize. The proximity to Mexican oilfields and the growing finds in the Peters area of Guatemala support this expectation. This report reviews the current state of the art of remote control techniques for underground continuous miners. A delineation of aspects requiring additional data is presented. Also a summary and delineation are presented in overview form for the related section functions: roof control, haulage, ventilation, power supply and rock dusting. The automated remotely controlled continuous miner project is a long-range research effort. However, the program has been divided into intermediate steps resulting in incremental production increases throughout the program. Data are developed relating the impact of our proposed research and development accomplishments to potential productivity impact.

The Soviet-controlled Government in Afghanistan continued to emphasize development of the country's mineral resources, primarily to supply raw materials and fuel to industrial areas in the Soviet Central Asian republics. In addition to expanding production of natural gas for export to the U.S.S.R., a $600 million2 Soviet-Afghan cooperation project, 1 of 167 such projects established since 1981, was devoted to exploiting the Ainak copper deposit, south of Kabul in Logar Province. Also being developed was the large Hajigak iron ore deposit in the Hindu Kush Mountains, 100 kilometers northwest of Kabul. In addition to these minerals, Afghanistan already produced small quantities of barite, cement, coal, gypsum, salt, and possibly some lapis lazuli. Afghanistan was the world's leading producer of lapis lazuli, a semiprecious gem stone, prior to the Soviet invasion in 1978, but production, although no longer reported, has probably been significantly reduced. It was also reported that Soviet mining engineers and technicians have commenced producing uranium from Lashkangah in the mountainous Khawaja Rawash area near Kabul.3 The Government was also considering mining chromite from Herserak and Mohammed Agha Kulanger, near the border with Pakistan.4 Afghanistan's overall economy remained stagnant in 1983, a result of continuing armed resistance to the Soviet-installed government. The gross domestic product (GDP) was estimated at about $2.8 billion, only marginally higher than the 1982 level. The value of exports was estimated at $720 million, up less than 2% over that of 1982, while imports rose approximately 8% over the same period. Natural gas was by far the leading export, earning about $295 million, up 4% over that of 1982. Approximately 90% of Afghanistan's natural gas production was exported to the U.S.S.R. Gas exports were used to pay the country's debt to the U.S.S.R., and also to pay for its supplies of petroleum products and other goods, which were imported almost exclusively from the Soviet Union. Some of Afghanistan's petroleum products were supplied by the U.S.S.R. as grants in aid, as Afghanistan did not have any domestic petroleum refining capacity.

MINFO has been developed to serve as a frontend for three databases created to store basic minerals information gathered during the minerals resource assessment conducted by U.S. Bureau of Mines(USBM) for the Malheur and Jordan resource areas of southeastern Oregon(MJRA). The primary database is the Minerals Location Inventory (MLI.DBF) which contains of information assembled from field work performed during this project, the USBM Minerals Availability System/Mineral Information Location System(MAS/MILS) database, the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral lndustries(DOGAMT) Mineral Information Location(MILOC) database, and the U.S. (Geological Survey(USGS) Mineral Resource Database System(MRDS), In addition, assay results are contained in the geochemical database (ELEMENTS.DBF) and modified X-ray diffraction analysis information is contained in the minerals database (MINOR.M.DBF). MINFO includes four types of program modules: ? Enter/Edit Data was developed to allow the addition of new information and to encourage correction of errors by providing a convenient means of entering and editing data and a large degree of automatic checking and filtering of entries. ? ACAD/DBF Link links each site symbol posted on the map in the drawing file to a record in the database. This provides the user with the ability to use a mouse or other pointing device to graphically select a site for viewing and editing. Edits are performed directly in the database file, ? Reports contains 7 formats of data output for creating files for printing, transfer to other database formats, and exporting to other software packages such as spreadsheets and word processing programs. ? Maps includes 5 programs for creating AutoCAD script files which can be used to create maps of selected information in conjunction with AutoCAD. Mineral location mapping files derived from MLI.DBF can be created in 2 formats. Mapping files can be generated from each of the 2 sets of geochemical analyses contained in ELEMENTS.DBF. X-ray diffraction analyses can also be translated into instructions for creating and posting piecharts at sampling sites.

The research on this report was conducted to obtain information on the feasibility of producing ferro chromium of varying silicon and carbon contents from domestic chromite. Concentrates from the Mouat deposit were chosen because they typify the chromite found in the Stillwater complex, the largest domestic reserve, and are similar in composition to other extensive North American and foreign deposits. Batch-smelting tests designed to produce high-, medium-, and low-carbon ferrochromium were made in single phase and three-phase, electric-arc, steelmaking furnaces. Agglomeration studies were made in a rotary kiln. Continuous smelting tests were made to yield data on the production of high-carbon ferro chromium and low-carbon ferrochromium-silicon. The carbon content of high-carbon ferrochromium was lowered to the medium-carbon range by oxygen injection. Mouat stockpile concentrates were nodulized in a gas-fired rotary kiln using quartz, limestone, and fluorspar additions in the proportion necessary to flux the slag. The nodules were smelted in a continuous test using coal, coal char, and mixtures of the two consecutively as reductants.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a laboratory investigation of copper electrowinning from electrolytes produced by solvent extraction. The purpose of the research was to gain a better understanding of the fundamental relationship between copper electrowinning conditions, anode corrosion, and cathode purity. Processing variables were evaluated in a cyclic semicontinuous system in which the depleted electrolyte was used to strip copper from loaded organic extractant. For the production of high quality copper cathodes, the electrolyte was dosed with cobalt and stripped of organic solvent extraction reagent. An optimum cobalt addition of 60 ppm, and removal of the entrained extractant with activated carbon provided the best conditions for electrowinning copper containing the least amount of lead and controlling anode corrosion. As little as 13 ppm of the entrained organic extractant, LIX 64-N, significantly accelerated anode corro-sion. However, the addition of 1,000 ppm of organic diluent kerosine did not affect anode corrosion. After cobalt dosing and removing the entrained extractant, cathodes containing less than 2 ppm lead were consistently electrowon at widely varied current densities, electrolyte copper and acid concentrations, and temperatures. Dosing of the electrolyte with selected impurities including magnesium, aluminum, manganese, and iron did not affect the cathode purity. However, 0.05 giL of chloride ions markedly increased anode corrosion and the sub-sequent transfer of lead to the cathode copper.

The Territory of Afars and Issas is to receive its independence from France on June 27, 1977. The Territory's economic income was based on entrepôt trade through the port of Djibouti and trans-shipment of goods on the Chemin de Fer Franco-Ethiopian (CFE) railroad. The Territorial budget was scheduled to in- crease from $32.6 million3 in 1976 to $36 million in 1977, despite severe shortfalls in 1976 stemming from inflation and a persistent balance-of-trade deficit. Subsidies from France continued to sustain the economy, and the French pledged to provide approximately $140 million in aid annually after independence. In 1976, financial agreements were concluded with a number of Arab oil-producing countries, including Saudi Arabia which granted $10 million toward development projects. The new Republic of Djibouti is scheduled to become the 49th member State of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) and the 21st member of the Arab League, and to receive aid from their financial institutions. A demonstrated reserve base (DRB) of bituminous coal suitable for cokemaking has been estimated based on the latest published information on U.S. coal reserves. Bureau of Mines analyses of raw coalbed samples were used to classify the coals as low-, medium-, and high-volatile bituminous and grade them as premium, marginal, and latent coking coals. Coal rank was used as the basis for identifying coking coals, and ash and sulfur content were used to determine coking coal grade. The demonstrated reserve base of coking coal for the entire United States is 162.67 billion tons. However, only 18.96 billion tons are premium (metallurgical) grade, and between 80 and 99 percent occurs in the Eastern States. The demonstrated reserve base of marginal-grade coking coal is 31.3 billion tons; more than half the marginal reserve base is in the Eastern States, and most of the medium- and low-volatile marginal coals are in the Eastern States. The Eastern and Midwestern States contain most of the latent-grade DRB of 112.4 billion tons; most (106.6 billion tons) is high-volatile coal, and 98 percent of the medium- and low-volatile latent coals occur in the Eastern States. Based on the worst assumption, which assumes that only premium-grade coals are used for cokemaking, the DRB for high-volatile coal would suffice for 127 years, the medium-volatile coal for 80 years, and the low-volatile coal for 83 years.

"One of the underlying reasons for the establishment of the United States Bureau of Mines was the desire to promote greater safety in the mining and allied industries. Safety continues to be an important feature in the work of the bureau, and during the fiscal year 1929-30 the Bureau of Mines allotted $387,510 to the safety division out of a total appropriation of $2,249,670 (other than for helium).The safety division personnel consists of 22 engineers, 2 mine safety commissioners, 3 senior foreman miners, 18 foreman miners, 16 first-aid miners, 16 clerks, 10 cooks, and 3 laborers, a total of 90 persons. These safety workers are distributed through the 10 districts into which the United States has been divided for administration purposes. During the year 3 engineers, 1 senior foreman miner, 4 foreman miners, and 4 first-aid miners left the service. In general these men left the service to take up more lucrative positions.The 10 all-steel mine-rescue cars have headquarters as follows: Car 1, Reno, Nev.; Car 2, Raton, N. Mex.; Car 3, Pittsburgh, Pa.; Car 4, Terre Haute, Ind.; Car 5, Pineville, Ky.; Car 6, Pittsburg, Kans.; Car 7, Huntington, W. Va.; Car 8, Duluth, Minn.; Car 9, Butte, Mont.; Car 10, Des Moines, Iowa. There is also a mine-rescue car with headquarters at Juneau, Alaska. In addition, there have been established 11 mine rescue stations as follows: Birmingham, Ala.; Berkeley, Calif.; Seattle, Wash.; Evansville, Ind.; Jellico, Tenn.; McAlester, Okla.; Norton, Va.; Vincennes, Ind.; Wilkes Barre, Pa.; Salt, Lake City, Utah; and Pittsburgh, Pa.Every mine-rescue car and station is fully supplied with equipment and devices for use in case of mine fire or explosion, and at each station is an up-to-date automobile truck. At time of amine disaster the bureau's forces are immediately placed at the disposal of the authorities, State or company, with a view to giving such assistance as may be desired or available.The activities of the safety division at ordinary times are directed largely to securing and disseminating data on safety in mining. Among the numerous studies made, or being made, concerning safety and health in mining are those in connection with the causes and methods of prevention of mine explosions, explosibility of dust and gases, explosives and blasting, haulage, electricity, falls of persons or material, ventilation, dusts, high temperatures, timbering, lighting, machinery, and in fact practically anything which results or may result in acci¬dents of any kind in or around mines."

The Bureau of Mines has developed a passive encoder for range knobs, a device that automates the task of obtaining the range settings from devices or instruments to be input to microcomputers. It is easily constructed and installed and will not disrupt the device to which it is being attached. It consists of a custom knob and a small printed circuit board that has light-emitting diodes and magnetic reed switches attached. A ribbon cable connects it to a microcomputer. This encoder eliminates one source of human error in an automated process.

Highwall mining is an important coal mining method. It appears that upwards of 60 highwall miners are presently in operation, and they may account for approximately 4% of total U.S. coal production. A review of the Mines Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) data over the 20 year period from 1983 to 2002 identified 9 fatalities attributable to auger and highwall mining of which inadequate ground control accounted for 1/3. In the past 5 years, 1 fatality occurred in highwall mining. Estimates of the manpower requirements in highwall mining suggest that its fatality rate is essentially the same as for surface coal mining, thus highwall mining appears to be a very safe modern mining method. Highwall stability is the major ground control related safety concern, and operators are required to develop and follow an appropriate highwall mining ground control plan. The plans usually specify the following geotechnical parameters: hole width, maximum hole depth, maximum overburden depth, seam thickness, web pillar width, barrier pillar width and number of holes between barriers. Calculated web pillar stability factor exceeded 1.3 for most designs evaluated. This study examined records from 5,289 highwall miner holes with a total completed footage of about 2,560,000 feet to understand the reasons for early pull out. Average lost footage is typically about 20% of planned footage. Only 35% of the holes reached planned depth, and 20% were short due to rockfalls. Water and adverse geology accounted for 15% of the losses. Mechanical/electrical problems, guidance, and slope stability problems accounted for the remaining 30%. Web pillar stability factor for these holes also exceeded 1.3 in 95% of cases. Best practices to avoid trapped miners include: avoid mining in stream valleys, avoid mining near outside corners, careful alignment of each hole and the use of an onboard guidance system. Several issues in highwall mining ground control require further investigation including highwall mining through old auger workings, highwall mining near old underground mines, multiple-seam and multiple lift highwall mining and finally the size and frequency of barrier pillars.

Two samples of the Lower Hartshorne (Spadra) bed were collected: A sample of the raw coal with the machine cuttings excluded, and a sample of the machine cuttings exclusively. Analysis of the 5-inch by 200-mesh size fraction of the raw coal, excluding machine cuttings, showed that a product meeting minimum quality specifications could be produced by washing at 1.60 specific gravity, yielding a theoretical 93.7 percent of clean coal. A negligible amount of near-gravity material at the separation gravity indicated an easy washing problem. The sample of machine cuttings had a maximum size of 2 inches and contained about 50 percent ash. Washability tests of the 2-inch by 200-mesh size fraction indicated that a theoretical yield of 30.0 percent of specification-grade coal could be achieved by washing at 1.49 specific gravity. As the machine cuttings represent an estimated 10 percent of the total coal mined, their inclusion in the mine output would increase the theoretical net yield of salable coal by only 3.7 percent. Because the machine cuttings contained a high percentage of sink 1.80 specific-gravity material, they had neither an effect on the separating gravity required to clean the raw coal nor on the difficulty of separation. Gabbing underground versus transporting the cut-tings to the surface for disposal or washing either separately or combined with the raw coal involves a number of practical, economic; and intangible factors; hence, no specific recommendations could be made. A discussion of some of the factors involved in dealing with a similar problem is given by Gandrud and Riley.4

The NIOSH suite of coal mine ground control software addresses nearly every aspect of coal mine ground control planning, including geologic characterization, mine layout, pillar design, and support selection. Mine planners who use the soft-ware have access to the knowledge gained during years of NIOSH research—packaged in a simple, easy-to-use format. Several of these software packages have recently been updated and improved. Analysis of Roof Bolt Systems (ARBS) (Figure 1) helps select the proper roof bolt system design from the immense variety of available bolt types and patterns. It was developed from statistical analysis of extensive bolt performance and roof fall data. New features in Version 2 include— • The capability to analyze roof bolt systems that use two types of bolts; and • A roof support cost module that estimates the total in-stalled cost of different patterns, considering the costs of consumables, labor, maintenance, and other factors. The Support Technology Optimization Program (STOP) (Figure 2) can be used to make judgments regarding which secondary support system will be the most effective in a particular mine condition and to evaluate the advantages or dis-advantages of alternative support systems. Version 3.0 includes additional improvements: • Supports with large load-shedding following yielding can be designed based on the peak loading capability as well as the residual loading capability; • Seven new support systems have been added to the program; and • Easier access to photo gallery has been provided. The Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) replaces com-plicated geologic information with a simple numerical rating that mine planners can use in many ground control applications. The CMRR can be readily integrated into a geologic exploration program, and the software package is capable of generating an AutoCAD CMRR "layer." Version 1.2 contains— • The complete CMRR database with more than 250 ratings obtained from 70 different U.S. coal seams; and • An all-new "Help" file that clearly explains all aspects of the program. Analysis of Horizontal Stress in Mining (AHSM) can help find the optimum mine layouts for control of horizontal stress. It can be used to analyze both development and longwall retreat designs, and it shows how the stress condition varies as the entry, crosscut, and panel orientations are changed. Version 2 features— • Improved graphics that enable the user to observe the effect of design changes without adjusting the display on the computer screen; and • Resource files containing information on stress map-ping, advance-and-relieve mining, stress measurements in U.S. coal mines, and other topics. A study was made of scrap iron and steel in the South Central States in order to determine trends in processing, shipment, and consumption if this important commodity. These data were derived in part from statistical sources and in part by visits to scrap yards and steel mills. Trends in the industry were reviewed. Dealers in 1963 supplied 1.8 million tons of iron and steel scrap to steel mills and foundries in the south-central area, compared with 2.1 mill ion tons in 1955. Most of the scrap was processed and shipped within 200 to 300 miles of consuming centers. Exports provide a principal outlet for dealers along the gulf coast. Most of the scrap that fills these orders is loaded onto freight cars at yards in Texas and Louisiana and is shipped to ports for direct transfer from railroad car to ship. The tonnage exported varies greatly from year to year. The largest scrap operations are in or near large cities which are heavy scrap generating areas, steel mill sites, or port cities for export of scrap. A tentative analysis indicates that the short-run supply of prepared scrap is inelastic to price changes; therefore, buyers probably are in a strong bargaining position at times of declining demand. One technological development in the iron and steel scrap industry is the use of large presses which can take complete automobiles with frames, wheels, springs, and other heavy parts still intact and reduce them to bundles. At Houston, Tex., and Kansas City, Mo., shredding plants are in operation that reduce car bodies and other light scrap into flat pieces 4 to 6 inches in size.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the laboratory processing of manganese nodules and the results of tailings characterization obtained during the cooperative program with the Department of Commerce's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Bureau. Five technically feasible first-generation nodule processing methods were operated at bench scale to generate sufficient tailings and slags for physical and chemical analyses. A description is given for the laboratory operation of the individual unit operations of each process. The laboratory-generated tailings and slags were tested for physical properties, mineral content, elemental and ion content, and leachability for all five processes. The results of leachate testing using the Environmental Protection Agency extraction procedure (EP) toxicity test, the American Society for Testing and Materials shake extraction test, and the EPA-U.S. Army Corps of Engineers seawater elutriant test showed very low to negligible leaching of metals from the tailings and slags. Results of the EP toxicity test demonstrated that the wastes are nonhazardous as defined in the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (Public Law 94-580).

"Steel manufacturers have noticed a decided tendency on the part of many of their customers to become more exacting in their steel specifications. Under these conditions, the steel must not only meet the specifications of physical properties (tensile strength, reduction of area, elongation, impact strength, grain size, normality, etc.) and the chemical analyses, but must also pass the inspection test of ""cleanliness.""By cleanliness is commonly meant the absence of oxide and sulphide inclusions. Other foreign particles such as furnace or ladle slag, ladle and runner brick, etc., must also be absent. The determination of cleanliness at present is usually made by microscopic inspection or macroetching.The rejection of steel for lack of cleanliness is increasing, out cleanliness is one of the most difficult requirements for the manufacturer to fill. The reason for this is that every steel inspector has a different conception of a. clean steel. A material which does not pass the examination of one inspector way be regarded as entirely satisfactory by the metallurgist of an¬other company. The cause of this confusion and disagreement concerning the definition of a clean or a dirty steel is simply that as yet no standardized procedure for the determination of impurities has been proposed and generally accepted, since many variables are encountered which interfere with the development of a satisfactory method. An idea of the complexity of this situation will be obtained from the following pages.A Survey of Proposed Analytical MethodsAlthough no analytical method has been accepted, many procedures have been proposed, as may be seen in Table 1. Therein are listed 16 of the better-known processes, pith references to the work of their originators, their mechanisms of determination, and their applicabilities. Among these is included the electrolytic method developed by one of the present authors, and some comparison between this and previously proposed procedures may be obtained by a study of the table. It appears that this new method Las many advantages over the others, and this paper presents a critical Study of its value."

THE TREND towards larger quantities of waste in materials handled at metal and nonmetal mines (excluding fuels) continued. A gain of 10 percent from 1962 in the tonnage of waste removed in mineral operations reflects the kind of technological problems being encountered. Technology has a major role in the mineral industry in the task of supplying raw materials obtained from resources occurring beneath the surface of the earth and used in manufacturing commodities essential to modern living. Changes in technology are often brought about by such factors as variations in economic conditions, differences in physical properties of raw material and changes in mineralogical compositions of ore. Mining is usually begun on the richest and most accessible of known deposits, and when these are exhausted, is continued with leaner ores or with less accessible deposits that are either lying at greater depths or are more remote from markets. The increasing difficulties of extraction and depletion of reserves are offset by improvements in extraction technology, improved transportation, and exploration for new deposits. Although depletion has prevailed at many individual mines and in many districts, technology has been the means of providing for increasing demands of an expanding economy with adequate supplies of minerals despite either the changing character or decreasing grade of certain ores. This has been accomplished by various methods applicable to minerals. Among the implements of technology are utilization of lower grade or more complex refractory ores by mass mining, concentration, processing, recovery of byproducts, and mechanization. Better methods to find concealed deposits or to penetrate to greater depths also have been helpful in maintaining a supply of particular minerals.

Several hardware items were prototyped for use with underground belt conveyors, and a manual for installation and maintenance procedures was developed and published under separate cover. Recommendations have been included for implementation of the tools and the manual or, an industry-wide basis.
