It describes practices and equipment used in tramway construction and discusses the design of tramways. The second paper will describe the construction and operation of tramways and give operating costs. No complete work on explosives, their constitution and analysis, has hitherto been published. Several books that contain chapte.r;s on analysis do not cover the matter thoroughly. Methods tha;t, manu~ facturers, testing stations, and other . agencies have developed to meet their own requirements have not been made public. The Bureau of Mines has issued four publications 1 - cov:eri:ng special phases of the subject. This bulletin. is not inte.nded to replace those reports, but rather to cover present methods employed 'in the , industry and to include all classes of explosives and the materials used in their manufacture. No sharp distinctions can be drawn between classes of explosives. . Surplus military explosives, for example, may be used for blasting, just as blasting explosives, under some conditions, may be employed for military purposes. Moreover, one class gradually merges into another because of similarity in composition. Explosives are here grouped as dynamites, black powders, propellants, detonators, and primers. Some materials are used in practically all these groups ; others in only one. To discuss all the materials that have been or that may be used and the methods for their identification and quantitative determination is not feasible, but the methods described will probably suggest ways of examining new mixtures.

A study was made of the factors affecting lead and zinc production in the Pacific Northwest. Costs, ore reserves and potential resources, and domestic demand were analyzed. It was concluded that a projected 3.1-percent average annual increase in U.S. demand for zinc through 1975 and a corresponding 2.5-percent rise for lead will be supplied mainly from mines in the Eastern and Central States. Annual Pacific Northwest mine production of lead is estimated to fluctuate around 82,000 tons, while zinc output may average 135,000 tons through 1975. Measured, indicated, and inferred reserves in the Pacific Northwest, containing 1.56 million tons of lead and 2.59 million tons of zinc, are more than sufficient to maintain this level of production. Annual production from Pacific Northwest electrolytic zinc plants is expected to increase to over 300,000 tons of slab zinc by 1975. Lead smelters may experience difficulty in maintaining output at 1964 levels.

"FOREWORDIn the second year of World War II, the petroleum industry in California was taxed to near capacity to satisfy the expanded war demand for petroleum products, particularly fuel oil. With discoveries of crude oil in California declining and known reserves being depleted rapidly, conditions appeared to warrant study of the possibilities of utilizing the outcropping bituminous sandstone deposits in California for obtaining new sources of oil if the war should he prolonged. At conferences in Washington, D. C., with members of the Petroleum Administration for War and the Geological Survey, Bureau of Mines engineers emphasized the importance of determining the extent of those outcropping deposits of oil-impregnated rocks and of developing a practical process for commercial recovery of the contained bitumen to assure, if necessary, a supplementary supply of fuels. The desirability of such a study was recognized, and in July 1943 the Petroleum Field Office of the Bureau of Mines at San Francisco, Calif., in cooperation with the Geological Survey and the Petroleum Administration for War, initiated a study of the bituminouss sandstone problem. It was agreed that all mapping and geological work in connection with the study would be done by the Geological Survey, all engineering studies in developing a process for extracting the oil would be carried out, by the Bureau of Mines, and that the Petroleum Administration for War would aid in final adoption of the results in the field if circumstances warranted such action.Deposits of bituminous sandstones in California occur principally in the immediate region of the Coast Range mountains, notably at Pt. Arena, in Mendocino County, about 110 miles north of San Francisco; near Santa Cruz, in Santa Cruz County; in the Edna area in San Luis Obispo County; in the Sisquoc area in Santa Barbara County; and in the Ojai and Santa Clara Valleys in Ventura County. 4/ In addition oil-bearing sands outcrop near McKittrick and Maricopa, in western Kern County, and along the east edge of the Kern River oil field. Among the several prominent deposits of these source materials, those occurring near the cities of Santa Cruz and San Luis Obispo, and the town of Sisquoc are the largess."

Variations in overburden geology must be considered in applying subsidence prediction methodologies developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM). To characterize rock mass overlying high-extraction coal mines, the USBM utilizes a computer spreadsheet program and modified Rock Mass Rating (RMR) system. The spreadsheet calculates an RMR based on a bed's engineering properties determined from core logs and laboratory tests. An in situ deformation modulus and a bending stiffness are computed for each bed. Stiffness-versus-depth plots identify groups of beds with similar stiffness. Large variations in stiffness between adjacent beds are considered significant horizontal discontinuities where slip is likely. Time domain reflectometry (TDR) is used to verify this hypothesis by measuring shear displacement along such discontinuities. A model of the overburden is built by assuming that a near-surface laminated beam exists above a transition zone in which large plastic slip occurs along horizontal discontinuities. Increasingly thicker groups of beds are modeled to determine the most probable beam thickness based on a comparison with measured deflection profiles. The inverse of maximum beam deflection is an index parameter known as "bridging potential," a single value that incorporates both overburden geology and mine geometry.

Ibis report summarizes the results of the contract. Included are summaries of existing legislation pertaining to outcrop barriers and a state-of-the-art survey of outcrop barrier designs and related, mine closure techniques. Six sites were inspected in the field and are presented as case histories The data analysis presented includes a computer modeled seepage analysis, an overburden blew-out analysis, and a wedge stability analysis. The results tit these analyses are interpreted to form recommendations for coal outcrop barriers which will minimize seepage and the potential for failure. Supplementary support and reinforcement alternatives are also discussed.

Manipulation of hand-held objects in 3D space is a complex task. Understanding how individual digits interact with a hand-held object provides helpful information for hand tool designers, researchers, clinicians, and occupational therapists. At the object-digit interface, the contact mechanics can be represented by three force and three torque components. Six-component force/torque transducers can register all the three forces and three torques at the digit-object interface, and therefore are advantageous in the study of manipulation mechanics. The large number of force and torque signals from multiple force/torque transducers are difficult to interpret and therefore making experimental research of manipulation a challenging task. The purpose of this study was to develop a 3D visualization tool for the investigation of the contact mechanics at the object-digit interfaces during manipulation tasks. Methods A 3D stick-figure hand model was created based on digitized 23 anatomical landmarks of the hand. Five miniature 6-component force/torque transducers (4 × Nano17 for the fingers, 1 × Mini40 for the thumb, ATI Industrial Automation, NC) were used to record force and torque data at the tips of individual digits. Thirty channels of force/torque signals from the transducers were collected by a 16-bit analogue-digital converter (PCI-6031, National Instrument, Austin, TX) installed in a computer. The transducers were mounted on a custom-made rectangular aluminum handle for object manipulation. Coordinate frames were established at each transducer, on the handle, and at the base of the MicroScribe digitizer. To visualize the force vectors at the digit-tips, the coordinates of the hand landmarks in the MicroScribe coordinate frame and the force vectors in local transducer coordinate frames were transformed to a common coordinate frame defined on the handle. One healthy right-handed, male subject participated in the experimental study. During the tests, the participant sat in a chair by a testing table. The forearm was strapped to an arm holder in neutral rotation position. The instrumented handle was fixed on the testing table by a C-clamp through an adapting plate. With the hand of the subject gripped on the instrumental handle, the landmarks of the instrumented handle and the transducers, as well as the anatomical landmarks of the hand were digitized using the MicroScribe digitizer for the purpose of coordinate frame establishment and transformation as described above. The subject performed three different maximum isometric voluntary contraction tasks: (1) grasping, (2) rotating in pronation, and (3) lifting. Results The 3D hand model and representative force vector clusters in a single trial of grasping, rotating, and lifting tasks are shown in Figure 1. Humankind's interest in measurement of human physical strength probably dates to the first humans. At that time, life was truly a struggle in which the fittest survived. To a great extent, fittest meant strongest. Interestingly, current interest in human physical strength in the workplace stems from 1970-1980s vintage research demonstrating that persons with adequate physical strength are less likely to be injured on physically demanding jobs. Survival in many modem workplaces may still be a case of survival of the strongest. There is, however, a flip side to this issue - that persons with limited strength are more likely to be injured on "hard" jobs. To address this problem, we can apply what we know about physical strength to job design. "Hard" jobs can be redesigned to be within the physical strength capability of most people. Since physical strength is important to these jobs, we must find ways to quantify it through testing. This publication concerns human physical strength testing. Its purpose is not to recommend any particular type of testing, but rather to describe the types of testing available and their uses. It is up to each individual user of strength testing to decide which testing technique is most appropriate for his or her particular application. This booklet discusses four types of strength testing: isometric, isoinertial, psychophysical, and isokinetic. Human Strength Before describing the different types of strength measurement, we must define the term "strength" and explain the concept of strength measurement. Strength is defined as the capacity to produce force or torque with voluntary muscle contraction. Maximum strength is defined as the capacity to produce force or torque with a maximum voluntary muscle contraction.(1,2) These definitions include some key words that must be explained. A voluntary muscle contraction is "voluntary." When a person's physical strength is measured, only the effort the person willingly puts forth at the time is measured. Thus, when we test a person's "maximum strength," we are not measuring his or her actual maximum, but some lesser value representing what he or she is comfortable expressing at the time with the existing equipment and environmental conditions. Interestingly, when researchers startled persons being tested (e.g., by setting off a starter's pistol behind them), they have found significant increases in measured strength.(3) It has been hypothesized that the lower strength displayed during normal testing provides a margin of safety against overloading and damaging muscle tissue. The test equipment and the tested person's familiarity with the process also influence the "voluntary" strength output. The interface between the tested person and the test equipment is particularly important. A poorly designed interface induces localized tissue pressures that vary from uncomfortable to painful. In this situation, testers are measuring voluntary discomfort tolerance - not strength. It is important for strength researchers to keep the "voluntary" nature of their data in mind when they are designing their equipment and protocols.

Cable reel systems for shuttle cars were investigated to determine whether an improved system could be identified. Interviews and mine visits were conducted to better define limitations and problems with present systems. Although simple and relatively inexpensive, present cable reel systems are not fully satisfactory. Several concepts for a different technical configuration were formulated and evaluated. An all ectric system using electronic control and external sensors was recommended for further development.

Preliminary results of an in situ oil shale retorting experiment conducted by the Bureau of Mines in a shallow bed of Green River oil shale at Rock Springs, Sweetwater County, Wyo., are described. Eleven wells were drilled into a 20-ft-thick section of the shale lying between 68 and 88 It deep, and attempts were made to connect the wells through the shale with a fracture system created by application of high-voltage electricity (electro-linking), hydraulic fracturing, and explosive fracturing. Ignition of the shale through the central well was easily achieved with a propane burner, and shale oil began to collect in three wells within 3 hours. Propane injection was discontinued after 7 days, and combustion continues, although attempts to control the direction of the combustion front have been unsuccessful. Production rates as high as 4 ½ barrels of nil per day have been recorded, but too little is known about underground conditions to permit an estimate of recovery efficiency at this time.

An investigation was made to determine the mechanical properties of oil shale at elevated temperatures and confining pressures, the thermal properties at elevated temperatures, and to provide mathematical models for mine design for in situ oil shale retorting. A review of current activity in in situ retorting is included with a comprehensive list of references. Tests were run at temperatures from 20°C to 500°C and confining pressures to 1500 psi with shale of 10 to 30 gallons per ton. A major loss of strength occured in heating 140°C with a partial regain from 380°C to 500°C. Higher grade shale had lower compressive strength. Elastic properties showed large variations. Brazilian tensile strength showed a similar temperature sensitivity as the compressive strength. Equations were developed for each property in terms of grade, temperature and pressure. Thermal, electrical and acoustical properties showed anomalies through the temperature range. Creep is a major factor in overall deformation of heated shale. Oil shale was found to be an excellent insulator. Loss of pillar support area at 800 hours of heating would be about 10 percent. Good correlation was found between a finite element model using the developed properties and an in situ heater test.

This document is Volume II of a two-volume report on underground and surface metal and nonmetal mine fires occurring between 1950 and 1979. Two surface fires from 1980 are included. Volume I discusses the methods of data acquisition, data analysis procedures, and results and conclusions. This volume contains (1) a master list of all fire incidents obtained from MSHA reports, (2) an annotated bibliography of all MSHA reports, journal articles on selected incidents, and non-reportable fires (appendix), and (3) indexes to be used in accessing incidents in the master list and annotated bibliography. These three types of information provide the reader with a complete summary of metal and nonmetal mine fires during the period from 1950 through 1979 and a convenient means to locate incidents of specific interest. The body of this volume is organized around two tables and a series of indexes. The two tables are master lists of underground and surface fire incidents. They are followed by 15 indexes keyed to the master list and annotated bibliography. The Appendix contains three different parts: ? The annotated bibliography of MSHA fire reports (one section each for underground and surface mine fires). ? The annotated bibliography of journal and other periodical articles about selected fires from the MSHA bibliography. ? A listing of non-reportable fires (one section each for underground and surface mine fires). Descriptions of the contents and use of each of the three major components of this volume (i.e., master list, indexes, and appendix) are presented in Section 2.0.

These proceedings consist of an overview of the underground metal and nonmetal mina fire protection research currently being conducted by the Bureau of Mines. The following papers address the areas of prompt, reliable fire detection, fire planning and warning, fire suppression, and personnel protection. Selected topics are included here that cover fire protection systems for shafts, underground fueling areas, and mobile underground mining equipment; spontaneous combustion, improved stench, and product-of-combustion fire warning systems; computer-aided ventilation modeling; fire doors; and an investigation of fire hazards in mine timbers. The projects described provide a current documentation of problems being addressed.

A program to investigate the effects of hardened washers on the uniformity of roof bolt tension and the resulting ground control in an underground mine was carried out. The complete roof bolt installation and roof bolt loads, mine convergence, and bed separation were monitored for a period of five months. The results show no evidence to support or refute the theory that mechanical roof bolts offer better support when they are installed with a high uniformity of tension. Also shown is the fact that if the bolts are installed with a maximum deviation from the mean torque of ±15% the addition of hardened washers significantly improved the uniformity of the installed tensions in the roof bolts.

The overall injury experience, excluding officeworkers, at metal mines and mills during the period 1961-63, reported by operators, was 174 fatal and 11,357 nonfatal disabling work injuries during an aggregate worktime of 451 million man-hours. These injuries occurred at a frequency rate of 25.55 per million man-hours, comprising 0.39 for the fatal and 25.17 for the nonfatal injuries. The combined severity rate of the disabilities was 3,779 days lost or charged per million man- hours, consisting of 2,314 for the fatal and 1,465 for the nonfatal injuries. The average severity of all disabilities during 1961-63, was 148 days per injury. The number of days lost and/or charged, ex- cluding officeworkers, at metal mines and mills during the period 1961-63, was 1,440,000 days charged to fatal injuries and 661,290 days lost from nonfatal injuries. An average of 70,966 men were at work daily. The outstanding cause for fatal injuries was the fall of rock or ore from the back, while most of the nonfatal injuries were caused by handling materials, slips or falls of persons, machinery, falls of rock or ore from back and side, and haulage. Injury experience at primary nonferrous smelters, refineries, and reduction plants during 1961-63, excluding officeworkers, was 23 fatal and 3,214 nonfatal disabling injuries during a total work- time of 277 million man-hours. The injuries occurred at frequency rates of 0.08 per million man-hours for the fatalities and 11.61 for the nonfatal disabilities. The severity rate for all injuries of 1,085 days lost or charged per million man-hours comprised 498 for fatal and 587 for nonfatal injuries. The number of days lost, excluding officeworkers, at primary nonferrous smelters, refineries, and reduction plants during 1961-63 was 138,000 from fatal injuries and 162,385 from nonfatal injuries, An average of 34,938 men were at work daily an active plant days during the three year period. The injury experience for officeworkers at metal mines and mills during the period 1961-63 was 20 nonfatal disabling work injuries, (there were no fatal injuries reported), during an aggregate work-time of 28,694,244 man-hours. These injuries occurred at a frequency rate of 0.70 per million man-hours. There were no fatal injuries reported for officeworkers at non-ferrous smelters, refineries, and reduction plants during 1961-63, but seven nonfatal injuries were reported during an aggregate work-time of 30,814,772 man-hours. The frequency rate for these injuries was 0.23 per million man-hours for this period.

West Virginia ranks second in the nation in coal production, surpassed only by Wyoming, and usually accounts for 15 to 20percent of the nation's total annual production. Cod occurs in seams of minable thickness in all but nine of the state's 55 counties. There are two coal- producing regions, the northern field and the southern field. West Virginia coal is mined by both underground and surface methods. Underground mines in West Virginia account for a major portion of its coal production. Surface mines are generally contour operations and, especially in the southern field, are in steep slope areas, with slopes greater than 20 degrees. Many of the surface mines remove multiple seams. Recoverable reserves in West Virginia total in excess of 55 billion tons of bituminous coal. West Virginia's regulatory program was conditionally approved on January 19, 198 1. Its Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved February 23,198 1, with emergency authority granted on August 26,1988.

Ethical concerns of in-vivo procedures and poor repeatability of non-invasive techniques have been major limitations in estimating vibration-induced spine loads through experiments. The biodynamic models of seated human body exposed to whole-body vibration (WBV) have evolved for defining the frequency-weightings, enhancement of human responses to WBV, and developing anthropodynamic manikins for seating assessment activities. The widely reported mechanical-equivalent models, solely based on through- or to-the-body biodynamic response functions, do not seem to resemble the biomechanical structure and do not yield information on the dynamic loading and deflections of segments of concern, namely the spine. On the other hand, biomechanical models with representative anatomical structure and anthropometry are being attempted to simulate segmental movements and the coupling effects, using Finite elements (FE) or multi-body dynamics (MBD) formalisms, which could provide important insights into the inter-vertebral forces [1]. While the FE models pose considerable complexities primarily related to characteristics of the bio-material properties, the MBD technique with discrete rigid bodies offers the flexibility to create multi-segment models with relative ease and lower computational cost. In this study, a preliminary multibody dynamic model of a seated human body exposed to WBV along the vertical direction is formulated using MSC/ADAMS software. The model validity is demonstrated by comparing selected responses with the available measured data. Methods The seated human is represented by nine rigid body segments, including: head, neck, thoracic and lumbar torso, pelvis, hands and thighs, as shown in Fig. 1. The rigid bodies are coupled through different rotational and translational joints, some of which are force elements to allow vertical translations and sagittal–plane rotations of the segments. The measurements of transmission of vertical vibration through-the-body generally require subjects to voluntarily maintain a vertical head position to reduce head-accelerometer orientation errors. The head–neck–shoulder joint is thus considered to be rigid. The shoulders are assumed to be rigidly attached to the thoracic segment. The torso is made up of three (upper, middle and lower) segments connected by visco-elastic revolute and translational joints to permit relative pitch and vertical motions. The forces and torques generated by the joints are derived assuming linear stiffness and damping properties, which were identified from published studies. The pelvis is connected to the rigid seat by similar elements representing the visco-elastic properties of the buttock tissues. The two thighs are rigidly connected to the pelvis, while the segment masses are chosen from the anthropometric data for the 50th percentile male subject. This report presents a U.S. Bureau of Mines study that incorporates coal mining factors, coal recovery factors, and economic factors into the definition of an economically recoverable coal resource. The relationship between these factors to the Energy Information Administration's estimate of U.S. coal resources-the "Demonstrated Reserve Base"-is discussed. The Boltsfork 7 1/2-minute quadrangle in eastern Kentucky was selected as the study area. Results indicate that of the original 280.2 M tons of resource in the quadrangle, only 99.8 M tons (35.6%) is recoverable at a mining cost of $25 per ton or less.

Overexposure to noise is a widespread, serious health hazard in the mining industry, and causes hearing losses to a large percentage of the mining population. Recognizing this fact, the Bureau has a major on-going research effort to address this problem area. These proceedings include an overview of the Bureau noise control program and summarize nine selected noise control research programs.
