The percentage of leached zinc in massive zinc oxide ores (11.7% Zn, >2 mm) is up to 73.3 % in 120 days. Alternatively, crushed to -0.154 mm, mixed with cement 5% (wt), pelletized and solidified. The diameters of the pellets obtained are between 5 mm to 8 mm. When the pellet solidification periods are 3 days, 10 days and 45 days respectively, the alkaline leaching rates of zinc in the pellets are up to 95.8%, 89.1% and 76.4% respectively. Decreasing the solidification time can re-duce reaction time, increase dissolution of zinc in pellets and lower the effect of initial zinc concentration on leaching rate. The experiment results show that the minimum solidification time is three days, and the kinetic study indicates that alkaline leaching of the low grade zinc oxide pellets is controlled by the diffusion of the leach liquor through the gangue layer in the whole leach process, and the apparent rate constants are 3.33×10-2 day-1, 9.18×10-3 day-1, 5.82×10-3 day-1 respectively.

The paper discusses the experiences of a fast-track curriculum designed to provide the industry with engineers capable of working in minerals processing industry. The course has been done once before and the second course has been started. Students chosen have graduated from other fields of engineering. For the first course, twelve students were chosen from 152 applicants and for the second the twelve students were chosen from 96 applicants. The basic idea of the curriculum is to alternate between theoretical studies at the university and working experience periods at industrial sites. In addition, there are several one week assignment tasks at industrial sites. The theoretical periods are six to eight weeks long and there are three of them. During the first period, the teaching concentrates on unit processes and their chemical and physical background. The theme of the second period is mineral engineering systems; flowsheet development, process dynamics, control systems etc. The last theoretical period teaches environmental issues, leadership, project work and other similar topics. Each of the theoretical periods ends with an assignment week at industrial sites. The assignments are designed to wrap up the teachings of the period. For the industrial periods, the students are given learning goals, which have been discussed and designed with their industrial mentors. They are required to find relevant literature, make experimental designs, implement those designs, present the data, and make conclusions of their results. During these periods, a weekly meeting over the Internet is compulsory. "Three important components of stirred tanks involved in energy consumption, the impellers and baffles, were investigated to intensify the agitation pretreatment on the flotation of nickel ores. Flotation tests revealed that the stirred tanks with two impellers had an advantage over those with one impeller in intensifying agitation pretreatment, and the higher agitation speed led to better flotation performance of nickel ores. Installation and removal of baffles were also employed in the stirred tanks, and flotation tests demonstrated that with baffles, the flotation grade increased significantly. These agitator design improvements were used to demonstrate that the energy supplied to the system significantly influences the flotation recovery and that if the energy consumption of the agitation pretreatment is ideal, flotation efficiency can be improved. Data from full-scale operations backed up these results.INTRODUCTIONThe flotation recovery of nickel-copper sulphide ore at the Western China nickel mine has historically been difficult due to the presence of large amounts of serpentine minerals (Feng, et al., 2012). Many studies reported that serpentine minerals tend to have a positive potential at pH values up to 9.5, while sulphides (such as pentlandite and chalcopyrite) have a low isoelectric point(Feng, et al., 2012). Serpentine minerals can form surface coatings on negatively charged sulphides surface due to electrostatic attraction when they interact with each other, which may also reduce collector adsorption and increase the hydrophilicity of the sulphide particles. In order to improve the flotation of nickel sulphides, sodium hexametaphosphate, sodium silicate, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), and other agents are used to disperse serpentine coating from sulphide surfaces in the flotation of the Jinchuan deposit and other nickel ores in China ( Kirjavainen and Heiskanen, 2007; Lu, et al., 2011). However, it is difficult to improve of the sulphide flotation due to the high dosage and the lack of selectivity."

The paper presents issues related to interference of mining activities with the environment. Exploitation of mineral resources causes primarily a modification of the landscape. All of the negative impacts on environment are short-lived and last as much as it takes to exploit the raw material. After the mine closure reclamation is necessary during which all aspects that reduce harmful effects of the mining activities on the environment must be taken into account. Current ways of reclamation allow recreating natural environment, which is different from the original and enriched in diverse new values. This requires propositions of new forms of converted land development through a detailed analysis of technical, natural, planning, economic and social sphere requirements. Before making final decisions regarding selection of direction of reclamation, a thorough analysis of the key factors has to be carried out. All steps related to the implementation of the reclamation project are shown in the paper using Limestone Mine "Górazdze" located in the south-western part of Poland as an example. This paper also presents an analysis of current ways of post-mining reclamation towards agricultural and forestry landscape, along with our own suggestion for their extension in order to preserve biodiversity. For choosing optimal solutions the most relevant criteria were considered: existing natural values and possibility of their protection. Taking into account the economic and social aspects, supported by natural potentials, implementation of tourism and recreation in this area were proposed. It was shown that this proposition would not interfere with the current trends of the natural landscaping. Finally, after completion of reclamation and land development in the considered mine area, creation of a geo-park was proposed along with appearance of geotourism in the area. To illustrate the proposed forms of post-mining land development in the form of maps, an ArcGIS(ESRI) software was used.

Raman analysis is a well-established method for finding the abundant minerals in an ore sample. In this study, Raman spectroscopy is tested as a method for rapid and contactless on-line mineral analysis. Rapidness might enable on-site analysis of rock drillcore, which in turn would lead to more cost-efficient solutions in mineral exploration. This paper discusses the use of Raman analysis to identify minerals and to measure their concentration. The sample set under study consists of rock drillcore collected from Agnico-Eagle Kittilä Mine, Finland. Selected parts of the sample set are measured by Raman spectroscopy and the minerals are identified using reference spectra from a public source. Moreover, the direct measurement of concentration of different minerals with the help of Non-negative least squares (NNLS) optimisation algorithm is considered. The optimisation algorithm was constructed to form a linear combination of reference spectra which best represent the measured spectrum, or an average of measured spectra, from an ore sample. The results show that NNLS can identify abundant minerals in a given sample. Also through this method of analysis the results of a traditional point-count method can be expanded: It was observed that, due to grain size, multiple minerals consistently appear in the spectra measured over an area, which means that point-count method is not a proper way to interpret the spectra. This can be seen as a new result, as formerly the discussion has attended to other methods.

In view of the fact that many domestic iron ore-dressing plant applying flotation cells in the re-verse flotation, to improve the technical level of magnetite reverse flotation, we apply such a technological process of one stage rougher and two stages scavenger flotation column respectively. The middling from the two stage scavenger process are returned to magnetic separation for condensing. By contrast, the technological process of one stage rougher and one stage cleaning flotation cells is made up of by multi-magnetic separation and magnetic middling regrinding separations. It has been proved that the flotation column we offer can simplify the technological process structure, obtain advanced technical indexes, run the system smoothly, reduce energy consumption, and be environ-mental friendly.

Today, sodium cyanide is extensively used for extracting gold, however it is highly toxic to the environment if not managed properly. This paper discusses the key challenges presented to gold operations in efforts to come into alignment with the Russian environmental regulations and suggests solutions to overcome these challenges. It is a fact that the major environmental threat cyanide poses to water sources. Therefore, natural water sources should be well protected from the adverse effect of cyanides used in hydrometallurgical processes. For this, the following site procedures and facilities are practiced: in-site and external water recycling systems, reclaim water treatment if required and tailings ponds with water impermeable screens (tailings ponds with controlled leakage). Cost comparison analysis of cyanide destruction methods was carried out. It was revealed that the aldehyde treatment method developed by Irgiredmet JSC demonstrated the best economics. Cyanide emissions are treated by mass-manufactured packed and membrane devices which allow to keep cyanides at the acceptable limiting values established by environmental regulatory agencies.

The performance of Knelson Concentrators (KC) used in gravity gold circuits often rely on manufacturers recommendations for selecting operating parameters such as, fluidising water flow rate and cycle time. These parameters are not only dependent on the machine parameters but also on the feed characteristics such as, size distribution of the gold and gangue particles and the composition of its constituent minerals. Particles entering a KC experience a centrifugal acceleration due to the high bowl rotational speeds. The required centripetal force to maintain a circular orbit is provided by the fluid drag force created by inwardly moving fluidising water and the Bagnold?s force arising from the particle/particle collisions. When the fluidising water flow rate is low particles move towards the outer rim of the bowl forming a packed bed within the grooves. On the other hand, if the fluidizing water flowrate is high the bed expands and some particles would move towards the centre of the bowl and gets carried to the tailings stream, thereby reducing the amount of material retained within the grooves of the bowl. Based on a force balance on a particle captured within the KC, a criterion which can be used to predict the amount of material recovered in the bowl has been derived and validated by experimental data. It has been shown that this criterion may be used to demarcate the transition of the bed from a packed-bed state to a fluidised state depending on the fluidizing water flowrate. By identifying the conditions for the optimal expansion of the bed comprising different constituent mineral particles, it is possible to estimate the optimal fluidising water flow rate that would maximise gold recovery while minimising gangue recovery. It was also observed that the accumulation of valuable mineral in the bowl takes place by the displacement of the gangue particles in the bed by the incoming heavy mineral particles. The kinetics of this segregation process was also studied using synthetic mineral mixtures. The experimental data suggests that this process follows first order kinetics and that the build up of heavy mineral reaches a maximum which could be used to identify the optimal cycle time. In this work, the suitability of the above model in optimizing the performance of a KC have been reviewed. Also the necessity and merits of testing an unaltered feed samples in a larger KC as op-posed to the commonly adopted GRG test has been discussed.

Opportunities to monitor and control primary grinding mill performance are strongly sought after in the mineral processing industry. Currently, limited on-line information about mill charge motion and content is available to mill operations for control purposes, leading to periods of lower throughput, instability, variable product size and accelerated mill liner and lifter wear. In response to this need, CSIRO has developed an on-line surface vibration monitor for primary grinding mills which produces data that has been shown to provide new information about the mill charge in terms of toe and shoulder position, as well as potentially key features such as the overall charge level, the distribution between rock and balls in the mill, and the impact of the charge on the mill liners and lifters. This paper outlines the key features of the on-line monitor system, particularly those relating to data transmission, data analysis, and the design of the monitor and its independent power supply. It describes the coupling of single vibration sensor data from the CSIRO on-line monitor to the actual operating conditions of a SAG mill and how the vibration response and hence mill operating conditions vary as a function of time, including during mill equipment failures such as a broken discharge grate. Opportunities for improved mill control based on the data from the on-line monitor are also discussed, as well as the implications in terms of mill processing and maintenance performance. Recently a CSIRO monitor was also installed on a ROM ball mill and analysis of the vibration sensor data from this installation is currently underway. Preliminary findings from this installation will be presented along with comparisons of generic information, such as toe position (measurement precision and operation variability) and vibration signal (intensity, sensitivity and operation variability), between this type of primary grinding mill and AG/SAG mills.

"The wastewater emitted by gold chemical industry contained vast of different heavy metal ion, such as Zn, Cu and Ni etc. Among them Zn is the main ion in the waste water which causes the serious environment pollution. A method of preparing a kind of resin which is used for the removal of Zn by magnetic adsorbent was developed and was applied in practice. This adsorbent is a chitosan made of a kind of Fe3O4-chitosan modified by epichlorohydrin. The adsorption capacity of the absorbent and it was concluded that under the laboratory conditions, the maximum adsorbing capacity of this adsorbent could be 287.58 mg/g. The absorbent was also applied in the wastewater emitted by a gold industry in Shandong province. Its performance was tested and the result showed that the concentration of Zn ion in the wastewater was reduced from 0.58 mg/L to 0.0174 mg/L. What is more, the adsorption rate could be more than 97% when the dosage was 100L/m3 after adsorbing for 1h. Many different metals participate to this reaction besides the gold ion in this processing, so that the composition of the water is very complex. The waste water emitted by gold chemistry industry contains large amount of heavy metals. Definitely, if it was discharged without any treatment, the water would threaten the environment. The recuperation of any ion in the water would mitigate the pollution. Ion exchange resin, which is an effective material to do the water treatment with low cost, became widely applicated in this field [Yu-jiao Wang,2013]. Different kinds of resin were developed and the influence factors such as pH, adsorption properties and selectivity for different ions were investigated [CA Cruz et al,2018; PawanKumar et al.2016; Y Zhang, et al,2010; and ShengingSun, Aiqin Wang, 2006;]. The waste water mentioned in this article has a high Zn concentration, so a magic resin for Zn adsorption selectively we designed was used to manage this water. And the recovery of Zn could not only contribute to pollution abatement but also a best way to settle a dispute to the short of Zn resource. So the article mainly describes the preparation and the application of a kind of magnetic adsorbent used for the removal of Zn both in laboratory and industry. A rare earth deposit in Sichuan, China is rich in wulfenite in addition to bastnaesite and barite, and the deposit has already adopted high intensity magnetic separation technique to pre-enrich the rare earth minerals, during which the wulfenite and barite have been left in the non-magnetic product. Because the chemical composition of wulfenite is only 24.17% Mo and 42.15% Pb, it is very hard to obtain qualified lead or molybdenum concentrates by physical separation process. To pre-concentrate the wulfenite, flotation has been first introduced, and by using 100g/t GY-7 as dispersant, 1500g/t CP-1 as depressant and 160g/t GY-4 as collector, a floatation concentrate assaying 15.52% Mo with a recovery of 86.12% was obtained. Then a leaching process was conducted by using 1.2mol/L Na2S as leaching agent, and molybdenum can be translated into sodium molybdate in the solution with a leaching recovery of 99%. To recover rare earth oxides (REO) and lead from the leaching residue, a magnetic separation process has been conducted. Above all, by the whole process, the molybdenum recovery reaches 86.16% in the sodium molybdate solution, and a lead concentrate assaying 54.59% Pb with recovery of 27.99% could be obtained.

"In this research work, it was attempted to reduce the iron contents (Fe2O3) in relatively low grade silica sample which was obtained from Shenin silica mine, using magnetic separation. The prepared sample contained 93.75%SiO2, 0.44%Fe2O3, 2.78%Al2O3, and 0.08%TiO2 and the Fe2O3 had to be reduced to less than 0.08%. Mineralogical studies and XRD analysis indicated the presence of Hematite, Pyrite, and Goethite as the major iron impurity phases. Mineralogical studies of polished and thin sections demonstrated that the degree of freedom of silica is more than 80% in -300+212 ?m size fraction. After primary stages including crushing, milling, scrubbing and de-sliming, various methods such as low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS), high gradient magnetic separation (WHGMS) and dry high intensity magnetic separation (DHIMS) were applied to find out that which process would be appropriate for the elimination of iron impurities from this sample. Different experiments were carried out on the product of wet rod mill and scrubber. However the magnetic field intensity of WHGMS was increased down to 2Tesla, and there was not any acceptable result in reduction of Fe2O3 content lower than 0.08%. Thereafter the product of wet rod mill and scrubber were dried and reported to DHIMS. In these experiments, maximum magnetic field intensity was 1.4Tesla. In this case very significant results were achieved, and Fe2O3 content of final product were reduced to less than 0.05% which meets glass manufacturing standards."

The concept of sustainable development resting on three pillars of economics, environment and social development has become an increasingly important factor in the European mining sector and a major influence on the related policies of the European Commission. Members of European mining industry shall conduct their activities according to the principles which promote sustainable development. A successful minerals planning policy should create the legal administrative environment that is necessary to ensure the sustainable supply of minerals to society within the framework of sustainable development. Members of the European mining industry shall conduct their activities according to principles which promote sustainable development. The challenge for sustainability is to find a balance between securing minerals supply, protecting the environment and achieving social progress. The point of balance depends on the range of policies adopted by governments. In this paper the development of the sustainability of the mining sector in EU and the social component of sustainability in the mineral industry is discussed.

This work is based on surface chemical properties of bacteria during adaptation to high grade copper minerals and the projected consequences in Bio-Flotation process. The utility of bio-processing in the beneficiation of copper ore through bio-flotation is demonstrated. An autotroph Acidithiobacillus Ferrooxidans bacterium is adapted to high grade mixed copper ore sample by repeated subcultures. The surface characteristics were studies by analyses at different pH and time intervals. From the studies, it was established that the mineral-adapted cells became more hydrophobic as compared to unadapted cells during bio-flotation. According to the unique properties and many applications of nano silver powder, it was prepared from acid leaching tail solution. The low value residual gold and silver ions were occurred with fellow heavy metals as pollutants (Fe2+, Cu 2+and Zn2+) in acid leaching tail solution in Mouteh gold mine in Iran. Preparation of nano silver particles was achieved in two steps: first, by addition of ammonia as separation step and second by using different reagents as precipitation and extraction steps. Different controlled parameters were including pH, residence time and temperature, mixing time, and reducing reagents to metals molar ratio. Acid leaching process was carried out with sulphuric and nitric acid via suitable reductants. In order to remove copper, zinc, and silver ions from solution, all of the conditions were controlled. The optimum conditions for preparation of nano silver powder with less than 90 nm were pH 10.5, hydrazine/methanol to silver molar ratio of 3 to 4, and reduction time of 5 min in 45 °C. The results were evaluated via SEM, A.A and UV- Vis spectroscopy analytical methods.

Bor flotation tailings are very interesting from two reasons: first, is having due value presently, and second represent serious pollutant into this region of Balkan. This paper is only one small part of investigation about processing of valuable minerals from tailings, and desulphurization of this biggest pollutant in the same time, by refloating. The main objective of this work is to pay attention on this problem for resolve greatest environ-mental problem of Serbia and Balkan in the nearly future. Bor is potential regional risk spot, since that failure of its tailings dams would release high amounts of toxic materials that would reach the Danube River. The basic goal of this experimental investigation was finding some possibility for flotation tailings treatment by classical froth flotation. In order was obtained material effect through copper recovery, and environmental protection by moving the rest of reprocessing into the safe place. The work present obtained results of laboratory tests in two laboratories: laboratory of mineral and recycling technology at the faculty in Bor, and laboratory of department of mineral processing of ITNMS in Belgrade.

Vast amount of fly ash, bottom ash and slags, are produced each year due to coal combustion in thermal power plants. These products consist of mainly unburned carbon and inorganic compound (such as: silica, alumina, iron oxides, magnesium oxide, phosphorus oxide etc.). These are valuable minerals and can be recycled or recovered if properly processed. One third of the material find application as an ingredient in cement and other construction products, the rest is held in dams or similar dumps, which results in a hazardous impact on the environment, polluting soil and ground water. The unproductive use of land, the associated long term financial burden maintenance and negative environmental impacts have led to realization that alternative uses for combustion by-products as a value added product beyond incorporation in construction materials are needed. At present, there is an intensive search to increase their uses. Other uses of coal combustion residues include as raw material in brick and ceramic tile fabrication, as filler in plastics and paints, extraction of valuable mineral materials, production of zeolites and soil and mine waste treatments. Separation of unburned carbon from bottom ashes by means of flotation was conducted in order to increase the possibility of the recycling of coal combustion wastes. In the flotation experiments collector, dispersant and frother amount, pulp density and pH were tested as variables. After first stage flotation experiments, at optimum conditions, the carbon content was reduced down to 5.58 % in the tailings fraction. This fraction meets the industrial specifications and can be utilized as a cement additive. At the same conditions the carbon content of the concentrate increased to 44.72 % at a carbon recovery of 65.81 %. After the cleaner stage flotation experiment the carbon content of the product is enhanced to 62.53 %. This fraction can be blended back into the coal feed to the power plant boilers.

Today, arsenic has become a much greater problem than before because of the limitations introduced by WHO and USEPA that are lowered from 0.05 ppm to 0.01 ppm. In the nature Arsenic is mostly found as inorganic compounds in the forms of arsenite (As+3) and arsenate (As+5) in aqueous solutions. Arsenic contamination in ground and surface waters has been encountered in almost every country. This element has a carcinogenic effect and can occur in natural sources and anthropogenic sources such as metal mining, groundwater usage and industrial activities. In this study adsorbing colloid flotation was applied in the presence of aluminum sulfates. In the experiments SDS and K-Oleate were used as collectors while MIBC was the frother employed. The effects of collectors and aluminum/arsenic ratios on the removal of arsenic were examined under various pH values. It was found that arsenic removal enhanced with increasing aluminum concentration. Furthermore, it was observed that pH was a very critical parameter in all experiments. The best results were obtained when initial As: SDS: Al concentrations were 10:40:40 ppm at pH 5.5. At this concentration, the efficiency of arsenic removal found to be 99.9%. Using pure quartz and hematite minerals, the adsorption mechanism of mixed cationic/anionic reagent schemes was investigated through Hallimond flotation studies. The flotation response of quartz and hematite independently with cationic and anionic collectors as well as with mixed cationic/anionic collector systems is assessed. The flotation response as a function of pH and collector concentration was investigated. The single mineral flotation tests in the presence of anionic collectors, quartz does not respond to flotation, but the C12 amine flotation of quartz was observed to be pH and concentration dependent. It was observed that hematite flotation recovery is maximum at acidic pH with sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS), neutral pH with oleate, and at basic pH about 9.5 with C12 amine. Flotation results with both quartz and hematite indicate an increased adsorption of cationic collector in the presence of anionic collector apart from its own co-adsorption. The incorporation of oleate in between C12 amine molecules decreases the electrostatic head-head repulsion and thereby increasing the adsorption of C12 amine due to attractive tail-tail hydrophobic bonds, besides forming a closely packed adsorbed layer enhancing the hydrophobicity. The increase in oleate concentration beyond C12 amine concentration leads to the formation of soluble C12 amine-oleate complex / precipitate and the adsorption of these species decreased the flotation since the alkyl chains are in chaotical orientation with a conceivable number of head groups directing towards the solution phase. The majority of the world?s nickel (Ni) resources occur as laterite ores, which are exceptionally complex, lower grade (<1.5% Ni) and expensive to treat using conventional smelting and high temperature/pressure autoclave methods. Heap leaching is a promising, less costly, alternative technology for processing low grade nickel laterite ores. However, significant technical challenges remain with Nickel laterite heap leaching, preventing its general adoption. This paper presents some highlights of laboratory column leaching studies undertaken to characterise, evaluate and optimise sulphuric acid leaching behaviour of Nickel laterite agglomerates. They provide basic but valuable information regarding Nickel laterite agglomerate structure stability and leaching performance under industrially-relevant, continuous acid irrigation conditions. In particular, Nickel and other key metals? (e.g. Co, Fe, Al and Mn) extraction rates, free acid concentration, bed slump and structural changes were determined at a given acid percolation rate as a function of time. Potential implications of the findings, for devising strategies for improved Nickel laterite plant heap leach operations are discussed.
