The effectiveness of three different types of longwall chock under the three different types of geological conditions worked recently is outlined. Some provisional analyses of the variation of chock load under the shale roof con- dition are briefly discussed and some problems and solutions of gateway and road- head support outlined.

Valuers of mineral properties should be aware that accountants are a major user of their opinions of value. Reliance by accountants can range from obtaining comfort that book values in balance sheets are not overstated to establishing values by which to assess the fairness of a takeover offer. Accountants using mineral property valuations clearly can't be expected to have the same level of expertise as the valuer and ""second guess"" the valuation. But they do have an obligation, under the ASC guidelines and their own professional standards, to'check the logic and reasonableness of the valuation before being able to rely on it. This means reviewing the valuation report for general sensibility, discussing the methodologies and assumptions with the valuer and being satisfied as to his competence and independence. This paper outlines how accountants use mineral property valuations, the level of scrutiny applied to such valuations and the problems commonly encountered in practice by accountants seeking to rely on them. The paper also explains how values of-mineral properties are established in company balance sheets and why these often differ, quite validly, from fair market values.

The Truong Son Fold belt in Indochina hosts the significant Sepon gold-copper district (Laos) and the similar gold-basemetal districts of Phuoc Son and Bong Mieu (Vietnam). With over seven years of exploration, Toronto-listed Olympus Pacific Minerals Inc, is one of few foreign companies that have to date made a substantial investment in mineral exploration in Vietnam.Much of this work has been conducted along the Phuoc Son û Tam Ky Suture, on the south-eastern limb of the Truong Son Fold belt on the Vietnamese side of the border with Laos. These programs have produced a significant number of gold prospects at varying stages of exploration development. The Phuoc Son û Tam Ky Suture is a major Paleozoic subduction zone that extends from northern Laos, through Central Vietnam and out into the South China Sea.It represents a Lower Mesozoic collision zone between the Paleozoic-age Truong Son fold-belt terrain to the north, with the crystalline terrain of the Pre-Cambrian Kontum Block to the south. Since its formation, it has been a locus of deep faulting, continental accretion, intensive intrusive activity and mineralisation. This paper briefly discusses the geological setting, structure, metamorphism, mineralisation, exploration history, and proposed mining development of the Olympus Phuoc Son Gold Project, with particular reference to the Phuoc Son û Tam Ky suture.

Fine (<20 µm) valuable mineral particles are difficult to recover in conventional flotation circuits. (Trahar and Warren, 1976; Jameson, Nguyen and Ata, 2007; Kohmuench et al, 2018). This leads to a loss of valuable fine mineral particles to tailings. Recovering these particles would be of economic benefit. Novel reagents, including temperature responsive polymers, for example, are being developed to improve recovery of fine valuable mineral particles by froth flotation (Ng et al, 2018a, 2018b). The approach involves selectively aggregating the valuable fine particles and making these aggregates hydrophobic, resulting in hydrophobic aggregates of appropriate size (in order of 100 microns) being amenable to recovery by froth flotation. The polymers developed have been produced at laboratory scale but not a full scale yet. The exact cost of producing such novel polymers is currently unknown, but they are likely to be more expensive than conventional reagents.

"Pierre Gy showed in his early works that the results in estimating the variance of the mean value of continuous lots depends on sampling mode (random, stratified or systematic), except in the theoretical case that the measurand is randomly distributed in the lot. The experimental variance estimate calculated from samples taken from the lot is independent of sampling mode but depends on sample size and the type of the lot heterogeneity. Variography can be used to estimate the variance of the lot mean for different sampling modes.Gy also defined weighting error, which is made if a simple average is calculated from the assays of samples taken from a continuous object (eg from a process stream) where the flow rate varies with time and is correlated with the concentration of the analyte in the stream.The effect on sampling uncertainty of the three sampling modes and their interaction with the following factors in estimating the uncertainty of the mean concentration is studied using simulated lots, and lots having heterogeneity patterns similar to those of real data sets, including the effect of: the type of heterogeneity (random, grading and clustered heterogeneity patterns) increment size and number employing composite sampling weighting error. Sampling is a random process and its the- ory is a study of the, numerous errors liable to take place in the course of its realization. A complete sampling scheme is a sequence of sampling (proper) and preparation stages . At each stage, the total error ET is the sum of : -.Sampling errors EE arising from the selection process itself. -Preparation errors EZ arising from the operations (crushing, transfer...) sup- ported by the sampled material. At each sampling stage, the (total) sampling error EE is the sum of seven inde- pendent errors : - Weighting error ED resulting from the non-uniformity of the density or rate-of-flow of the sampled material. - Integration error EI1 resulting from the long-range distribution heterogeneity of the sampled material. - Periodicity error EI3 resulting even- tually from periodic quality variations of the sampled material.

Exploring new polymetallic processes, integrating primary and recycled materials, means utilising the uncharted areas within the Cu-Pb-Zn-Fe-Ca-Al-Mg-Si-O (major) – Cr-Na (slagging) – As-Sn-Sb- Bi-Ag-Au-Ni-Co (minor) slag-solids-metal-matte-speiss-sulfate system. This requires extensive integrated experimental and thermodynamic modelling study, which is underway at PyroSearch at the University of Queensland (UQ).

Many deposits have been evaluated as potential block caves over the last 20 years due to the perceived benefit of low operating costs. However, block cave projects are typically capital intensive, with mass mining providing high throughput rates that required large investments in mining, processing and utilities infrastructure. While the key economic metrics in deciding to proceed with a caving project are typically net present value (NPV) or internal rate of return, these may not represent the best decision metrics for some companies. Where a caving project is competing for scarce capital amongst other projects in a company’s portfolio or where the caving project is the only project being evaluated by a company trying to raise capital, other metrics may be more appropriate. This paper explores the use of present value ratio and the minimising of maximum negative cash flow as suitable metrics in determining alternative strategies. Trade-offs between optimising for economic value and capital efficiency measures allow for decision-makers to evaluate potentially higher-risk, higher-capital and maximum NPV projects against lower-risk, lower-capital projects.CITATION:Stewart, C A and Butcher, R J, 2016. The P49 Shaft, Hilton Mine, was sunk and equipped for Mount Ise Mines Limited by con- tractors Cementation - Thiess Joint Venture. The leached siltstones to a depth of 150m were known to contain large volumes of water. These siltstones were cored and tested in the laboratory. Field results confirmed that cement grouting was relatively ineffective but that chemical grouting was effective. The Sm diameter shaft was sunk to a depth of 1040m. Weak strata to the full depth re- quired continuous temporary support by rock bolts and mesh before the concrete lining was poured, and made sinking conditions difficult. After completion of the shaft sinking the headframe was redesigned and modified to allow shaft equipping as a combined service and hoisting shaft with seven compartments. The shaft steelwork was designed and fab- ricated for service with high speed conveyances operating under corrosive conditions. The steelwork, weighing approximately 1500 tonnes, was installed to a high degree of accuracy which required guides not to depart from true verticality by more than 2mm over any 5m, or 15mm over the full shaft depth.

The New Zealand Minerals Industry Association was incorporated as the NZ Mineral Exploration Association in 1982, with a membership that consisted of the gold exploration companies then active in New Zealand . As its membership broadened, it changed its name to the Mining and Exploration Association in 1994, and more recently the Minerals Industry Association. It is a non-profit-making incorporated society relying on voluntary membership, and is not funded by industry levies. &nbsp; It has employed a full time executive director since 1988 when Robyn Ross was appointed, followed by John Pfahlert (1991 - 1996) and now with Doug Gordon managing the Association. &nbsp; The Association is one of a number of organisations that represent the mining industry in New Zealand. Others include the Coal Association of NZ (CANZ), the Aggregate and Quarry Association (AQA), The West Coast Commercial Gold Miners Association and Minerals West Coast. &nbsp; NZMIA membership comprises the main exploration and mining companies that account for over 80 per cent of New Zealand Æs mine output, and nearly all of its exploration investment. Its membership has expanded from gold exploration to encompass exploration and mining companies active in coal, gold, aggregates and industrial minerals. &nbsp; The Association has developed a National Minerals Strategy that determines its priorities, implemented via a Minerals Industry Advisory Committee. This group was established six years ago to advise the Associate Minister of Energy on issues relating to the long term development of the minerals sector in New Zealand.

The effects of detonation of downlines and downline-booster systems on lodse-poured charges of 94% porous prilled ammonium nitrate/6% fuel oil (AN/FO) were determined. Detonation stability was indicated by the initiation-failure pattern of detonating fuse witness lines located at intervals along the charge. Steel tubing was used as the confining medium. Charge diameters (d) varied between 2-21/32 and 8.1/8 in. and specific charge weights (w) of downlines between 4.0 and 93.2gr/ft. The axes of charge and downline were colinear. The minimum value of w required to cause initiation of AN/FO increased with d. When initiated by a downline only, the charge&apos;underwentlowòorder detonation. When downline-booster systems are used, the detonation wave in the downline cuts all equatorial planes in the charge before the detonation wave in the surrounding AN/FO. If the downline itself does not cause initiation, therefore, the explosive ahead of the main detonation wave is crushed, and hence desensitised, by the radially-expanding compression wave and gases generated by the downline. In a given equatorial plane, the fraction gftharge undergoing detonation decreases with an increase in the booster-plane distance. IN preparing a sample of refined lead for analysis, it is necessary to exercise great care to avoid contaminatien, as the amounts of the various impurities present in market lead are very small. The lead is cut into convenient-sized pieces, which are flattened out with a hammer, so that, on putting tbe lead through the rolls, strips of about one inch in width and Ij32iu. in thickness are obtained. The hammer, anvil, and rolls should be carefully cleaned before use. The strips oflead are cut up into pieces of about one inch square. If the lead is roIled out very thin and cut up into small pieces there is considerable risk of the acid acting too violently and causing loss through frothing over. A blank assay on all the reagents used should becarried right through, along with the actual analysis of the lead. This is of the greatest importance, particularly with regard to the determination of such impurities as iron, sulphur, arsenic, and antimony.METHOD OF ANALYSISThe method of analysis is as follows: Take two lots of 600 gIm. each, place in a large beaker, add 2000 cc. distilled water and 750 cc. concentrated HNOs. Cover with a clock glass and warm on a hot asbestos plate until all action ceases. (If any white precipitate forms, filter off and examine for Sn and Sb.) Add 420 cc. H2S04 (1-1), and stir well while adding the acid: Allow PbS04 to settle, pour off the clear liquid into a 12-in. porcelain evaporating dish, and start evaporating down, the dish being placed directly on an 8-in. ring gas burner. Wash the precipitate three times by decantation using approximately 1200 cc. hot water for each washing, and stir well...

It is a great pleasure to accept the invitation to open this Joint Conference of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers. It is the second invita- tion to participate in the Conference that I have accepted. When it was being planned, the President wrote to me to invite me to be one of the speakers in one of the technical sessions. I wrote accepting the invitation, and when my present appointment was announced, there was a nice question about the earlier commitment. The upshot of it all is revealed by the present arrange-., ment: you get me as opener and the more sub- k stantial speech is to be given by Professor Rupert Myers, my friend and former colleague who will not only be able to contribute from the standpoint of an experienced University admini- strator, but will also speak from a professional training and experience much more closely relat- ed to the concerns of this Conference than I possess. Though it is a joint meeting and the speakers will include distinguished figures from North America, I hope that since the venue is Australia, I may be permitted to speak with an Australian emphasis. I have recently had a brief glimpse of part of the Australian mining industry. In the course of a journey through the Northern Terri- tory we-my wife and I-visited Gove, Groote Eylandt, and Tennant Creek. At Gove we saw the remarkable Nabalco development in bauxite and alumina and the very impressive town plan- ning development at Nhulunby, the major man- ganese enterprise at Groote Eylandt, and the gold mining activity at Tennant Creek. For lay people like us, a gold pour was arranged at Tennant Creek and that was a spectacular sight. On earlier occasions, and before my present appoint- ment, I had visited Mount Isa and the Utah fields, and Queensland Alumina at Gladstone. I have not seen the cradle of the modern mining industry, using cradle perhaps loosely, at Broken Hill, nor have I seen the great Pilbara develop- ment, nor Weipa. This is not for want of generous invitations and it is my hope that within the not too far distant future this will be rectified. Then there is the Australian petroleum industry and the great industries which make their products from the minerals mined which I have yet to See.

EMR is equivalent to reporting Mineral Resource additional to Mineral Reserve, which has been permitted in jurisdictions outside the US for many years. Ashanti Goldfields CompanyÆs (AshantiÆs) most recent development is the Geita Project in the Lake Victoria Goldfield of NW Tanzania. It comprises six distinct gold deposits within two mineralised trends: Nyankanga, Lone Cone, Geita Hill (Geita trend) and Matandani, Kukuluma and Area 3 West (Kukuluma trend). Between 1936 and 1966, the Geita area produced an estimated 5.5 M tonnes of ore from five underground deposits at an average recovered grade of 5.3 g/t. The discovery of Nyankanga was made by Ashanti in 1996 from RAB drilling of a +100 ppb Au anomaly in laterite soil above ferricrete cover. The Kukuluma trend was discovered by SAMAX Resources (taken over by Ashanti in 1998) between 1996 and 1997 from RC drilling of a +80 ppb Au laterite soil anomaly. Oxide facies banded iron formation (BIF) of the Upper Nyanzian System forms prominent topographic ridges and is the dominant host lithology for gold mineralisation. The ridges are flanked by felsic tuff units which lie stratigraphically above. Syn-genetic lamprophyre (vogesite) and post-genetic felsic dykes are also seen in the Geita trend. At Nyankanga a granodiorite-diorite suite has intruded as dykes and sills into BIF from a plug centred on a WNW fault and has produced wallrock alteration assemblages similar to those seen in Cu-porphyry systems (potassic, propylitic, etc) as well as sulphide and gold deposition. However, the main ore-grade mineralisation (as in the rest of the Geita trend) is controlled by low-to-medium angle structures dipping north-west and north with numerous splays in the hanging wall. High-grade shoots at Nyankanga plunge to the west and to the north-west, being lithologically and fault-controlled respectively. At Geita Hill the higher grade shoots are controlled by fold noses in BIF dipping to the north. Free gold occurs within fractures of sulphides. The deposits of Kukuluma and Matandani occur on an ancient (possibly Cretaceous) erosional plateau and are related to two WNW to NW trending shear zones, discordant to the local strike of the BIF sequence. Complete oxidation occurs up to 120 m depth and there is a strong supergene component to the gold distribution. Primary gold mineralisation is divisible into two distinct assemblages: arsenopyriteûpyrrhotiteûmagnetiteûchlorite associated with brecciated cherts and pyrite associated with shaley banded ironstones. Area 3W is most likely the fault-displaced extension of the same mineralised trend and comprises thin, intermittent zones of high-grade gold mineralisation occurring adjacent to a ridge in banded cherts and minor BIF. Current resources (measured, indicated and inferred) for the project are estimated at 89.24 Mt at an average grade of 4.17 g/t (11.97 Moz of contained gold) at a 1.0 g/t cut-off grade. Of this 9.83 Moz is within the Geita trend and 2.14 Moz is within the Kukuluma trend. A resource of 2.74 Moz is from an inferred resource at depth at Nyankanga where the viability of an underground operation is being studied. Proven and probable reserves are 49.77 Mt @ 3.46 g/t (5.54 Moz) based on a $325/oz gold price providing a mine life of ten years at an average production rate of 500 000 oz per year. Reserve estimation was carried out using mineable polygons to select resource blocks based on a series of mining and costs parameters. In addition key cost parameters were tested to provide sensitivities for pit optimisations and pathfinders for negotiations with suppliers and contractors. Construction began in March 1999 and first gold is expected to be poured in the second-quarter 2000.

The height of fracturing (HoF) measures the propagation distance of continuous fracturing from the mining horizon and is also termed the height of cracking (Hebblewhite, 2020; Khanal et al, 2019) or hydrologically the height of groundwater drainage (Tammetta, 2013). In longwall practice, HoF is an important predictive indicator for assessing the dewatering effect of panel extraction on the shallow aquifer and surface flows. The HoF determination is basically dependent on field measurement works, typically using surface extensometer, borehole televiewer imaging, piezometer monitoring, packer testing, borehole breakout logging, and isotopic tracer monitoring (Brown and Walsh, 2022; Corbett, 2022; Hebblewhite, 2020; Holla and Armstrong, 1986; Mills and O’Grady, 1998; Walsh et al, 2022a, 2022b). These methods or tools have been widely applied to observe rock fracturing and groundwater responses to longwalls at Australian coalmines, for example, Dendrobium Mine (Brown and Walsh, 2022; Walsh et al, 2022b), Appin Mine (Walsh et al, 2022a), and Springvale Mine (Corbett, 2022). In Chinese mines, borehole televiewer imaging and packer testing are more frequently used due to convenient instrumentation, quick testing, and not requiring long-term maintenance of the instrumentation boreholes. The HoF determination also involves further raw data interpretations, for which specialist software for data extraction and quantitative criteria for bounding the fracture transition and termination are necessary. By combining the measured fracture distribution and longwall parameters regarding panel geometry and geological settings, several HoF models have been developed for conceptualising the understanding of strata depressurisation and providing mine engineers fast calculation tools for HoF prediction. The Mackie model considered the height of fracturing as the upper bound of fractured zone and revealed that within the fractured zone there are highly connected fractures and accordingly porosity enhancement and groundwater depressurisation, where the fracture network can be less transmissive from the mining horizon up (Hebblewhite, 2020). The fractured zone shares similar fracturing regime but different heights in varying models: HoF is 30 to 58 times of the mining height (t) based on Australian, Soviet and UK experience (Kendorski, 1993, 2006), and 21 to 33 t according to the field measurements in NSW Central Coast, Australia (Galvin, 2016). Some Australian longwall mines adopt Ditton model (Ditton and Merrick, 2014) (Equations 1.1 and 1.2 in Table 1) sourcing from NSW coalfield experience for HoF prediction, while Liu model (Liu, 1981) (Equations 2.1 to 2.4 in Table 1) developed from 27 coalmines in China is frequently used by Chinese coalmines.

The Early Proterozoic metamorphic rocks of the Broken Hill (BH) Block have been recently subdivided into sixteen formations and four groups (Willis et al., 1983b, Stevens et al., 1983). This stratigraphic subdivision has relied upon recognition of distinctive mapped rock units and "associations" of mapped rock units, which characterize particular lithostratigraphic units. The rock units and rock unit associations define local ordered sequences which can be compared and correlated, thereby establishing the stratigraphic succession. In the Clevedale homestead, Thackaringa, BH City, Bores Mine-Freyers mine, Silver King mine, and Brewery Well areas, coherent stratigraphic successions have been interpreted. These areas illustrate the regional variability of the stratigraphic succession and facies changes within individual stratigraphic units. Stratigraphic type sections are located in the Thackaringa, Bores Mine-Freyers mine, Silver King mine, and Brewery Well areas. The principles of stratigraphic interpretation applied in the BH Block can be used in other areas of Willyama Supergroup outcrop such as the Euriowie, Olary and Mount Painter Blocks. The general technique may also have applicability to other highly deformed and metamorphosed terrains.

Studies of the minor element content of sphalerite and pyrite have generally been concerned with individual deposits or localised groups of deposits. However, a small number of more regional investigations have been reported (e.g. Davidson, 1962; Groves and Loftus-Hills, 1968; Loftus-Hills and Solomon, 1967; Price, 1972; Bralia et al., 1979) which have used the minor element abundances to evaluate the petrogenesis and geological affinities of diverse ore types and to fingerprint metallogenic provinces (e.g. Ivanov, 1964). While generally held to be valid, some doubts have nevertheless been cast on the reliability of minor element abundances in petrogenetic deliberations (e.g. Mercer, This paper reports on the distribution of he. Cpl and Mn in sphalerite, and Co, Ni and Mn in pyrite, from sulphide mineral occurrences within the "eugeosynclinal" prism comprising the New England Region of north-eastern New South Wales and south- eastern Queensland (Fig. 1). The occurrences examined are representative of two well-defined styles of mineralisation (Stanton et al., 1974) within which clear patterns of ore-rock distribution give rise to specific metal associations (Herbert. 1977).

The cylinder test allows us to determine the expansion of a copper cylinder by the detonation of an explosive charge inside. This test, originally designed for military explosives, has been adapted for industrial explosives with non-ideal behaviour. From data obtained with this test and known physical relationships, an analytical procedure has been developed to calculate the Jones-Wilkins-Lee (JWL) equation of state parameters for five ammonium nitrate/fuel oil (ANFO) and six emulsion-type explosives. A new radial wall expansion function is proposed considering a non-zero initial velocity with the consequent positive Gurney energy at unit relative volume. A set of equations is established to determine the JWL parameters, three of them obtained at the Chapman-Jouguet (CJ) point and the other three at different relative volumes. These equations, along with some constraints to ensure a physically sound solution, are solved for the JWL parameters by a non-linear least squares scheme. A 2D Lagrangian axisymmetric finite elements (FE) numerical model is developed for each tested explosive to validate the analytical results, in terms of expansion histories, with good agreement. This confirms that the set of conditions, constraints on the parameters and least squares calculation used constitute a robust methodology that fully captures the physics of the detonation products expansion involved in the cylinder test.CITATION:Castedo, R, Sanchidri&#225;n, J A, L&#243;pez, L M, Segarra, P and Santos, A P, 2015. "'Optimisation' has become a catchcry among many mining companies looking to tell the market how mining businesses will be improved and shareholder value increased. Consequently, the term 'optimisation' has been adopted by many service providers as they look to assist mining companies in achieving their objectives. But the explosion of services and products being offered with the label 'optimisation' has created some confusion. Mining companies ask for help in 'optimising' and service providers offer their assistance because they have a product that has the word 'optimisation' in its title. This is of course an over-simplification, but not by much! The authors' discussions in recent years with both mining companies and service providers have uncovered a number of very different definitions of optimisation.This paper provides a framework for identifying the scope and approach of different mining optimisation products and services, particularly the distinction between optimisation of components of the operation and the business as a whole. The different types of business optimisation are discussed, highlighting the failings of the mining industry's typical approach of strategy selection (as opposed to strategy optimisation). Mining business optimisation is discussed as a wicked problem, with the implication of this on how strategy optimisation models should be used and what the objectives of a business optimisation study should be.Case studies are also included to illustrate how fully flexible strategy optimisation models have been applied to assist decision-makers understand the impacts of changes in one part of the operation on the whole mining and treatment process, from geological models to the sale of product to customers.CITATION:Kahler, D B and Hall, B E, 2016.
