At the Orieco mine quartz veins carrying sulphides were localized in parts of an extensive fault zone in the Mathinna Beds during late Middle Palaeozoic mineralization.These deposits were subsequently exposed, and oxidation of the sulphides by percolating groundwaters resulted in the formation of gossans at the surface, and replacement close to the permanent water table of the more soluble sulphides by copper sulphides (chalcocite, coveIlite). A restricted zone containing copper oxides (cuprite, tenorite), copper carbonates (malachite, azurite), iron arsenates (scorodite, pharmacosiderite) and possibly rare copper sulphates occurred above the water table.The renewed oxidation of these deposits following mine development has been facilitated by the ready circulation of air and water combined with the formation of large free surfaces ideal for evaporation of aqueous solutions. Under these new conditions of high initial sulphate concentration, low pH, and relatively high Eh, the previously formed mineral assemblage is unstable and numerous Cu (Fe,Zn)-sulphates and Fe (Cu,Pb)-arsenates are presently forming in fractures in the fault zone and on the adit and stope surfaces for some considerable distance from the Sulphide-rich ore shoots. The observed spatial sequence of the major sulphates with respect to the sulphide-rich zones (Le. chalcanthite-antleritebrochantite and langite) is consistent with decreasing sulphate concentration and increasing pH away from the oxidizing sulphides.

Six simulations by the Mpnte Carlo method employing both classical and geostatistical techniques are presented for the determination of the probability distribution of the in situ value of a coal seam. To avoid the problem of qualitative estimation of parameter variability in the calculation of an arbitrary seam value, only data values from borehole information were used to quantify the variation in four coai seam parameters.The method which is suggested as being the most appropriate is a particular geostatistical approach that employs the best linear unbiased estimate and the error of estimation for a number of two dimensional blocks. The results indicate that the variance of the coal seam unit value may be much higher than that indicated by the classical approach because of the spatial variability that is properly incorporated in the geostatistical approach.The model used in the Monte Carlo simulation to determine the economic value of a coal seam can be extended to incorporate all those parameters which are necessary for a true estimation of the probability distribution of the coal seam value. A time value concept for discounting can also be incorporated to optimize the economic return of a coal mining project.

Interest in industrial minerals in recent years has increased to such an extent that it has taken them into the mainstream of the Australian mineral industry. Notwithstanding that time series data on the values of production, exports, and imports show that industrial minerals are overshadowed by metals and energy minerals, their contribution to the national economy is important and more significant than would seem to be indicated by the statistics. Whereas the ex mine value of metals generally includes some processing (at least to a concentrate stage), most industrial minerals are valued at little more than their extraction cost, in addition to which such costs are generally low because most industrial minerals are exploited in low-cost surface operations. Consequently, values of mine production of metals and industrial minerals are not strictly comparable in that values of mine production of metals tend to be overstated Short term growth of the industrial minerals sector is assured because of several new projects already commissioned but not yet reflected in the statistics. Longer term growth is also assured, based on various other major projects that are likely to come on stream in the early to mid 1990s.

llmenite from the west coast of the South Island, New Zealand, shows exceptional reactivity with dilute sulphuric acid. Based on this, a cyclic acid leaching process was developed for the production of material with more than 98% TiO2, suitable as a substitute for mineral rutile.Titanium hydrate is recovered from the leach liquor by hydrolysis, and is calcined to give the required product.Ferrous sulphate is crystallized from the hydrolysis filtrates, which after concentration are returned to the leaching stage. The need for further evaluation of the process on a larger scale is indicated.

The use of black and white and colour infrared film in remote sensing of natural resources is reviewed. In heavlly-forested areas such as New Zealand, the main value of the method is in surveying the vegetation cover to detect the existence of plant communities characteristic of specific geological formations. By contrast in arid areas of Australia where the vegetation cover is sparse and where rocks and soils are well exposed, the method can be used in detecting different rock types or other geological differences.

In the extraction of level bridge pillars in the South Mine by square-setting methods the general practice is to work transversely from the hanging wall in narrow sections three or four sets wide to the depth of the bridge-usually three sets. When the working block attains an area of twelve square sets, sand filling is run in, either by pneumatic (Proceedings No. 123, 1941) or hydraulic methods, in order to control the settlement of the general area and prevent the development of undue weight in the stope. Upon completion of the filling operations, or coincident with them, ore breaking is resumed and the transverse section of the bridge pillar gradually reduced. The presence of undetonated explosives in a rock face after firing constitutes a hazard which can result in a fatal or serious accident if undetected before drilling commences.Most accidents caused by drilling into explosives are the result of failure to examine the working face properly and lack of care in subsequent drilling operations; it is not always realized that explosive may be left in the butts of holes or may be driven into cracks or crevices in the rock.Obviously the best means of preventing accidents of this nature is to adopt methods of drilling, charging and firing which will reduce the hazard to a minimum.There are three ways in which undetonated explosives may be left in the rock face, namely:1. Misfires.2. Cut-off shots.3. Incomplete detonation or failure of the charge to propagate throughout.MisfiresNo attempt will be made in this paper to deal fully with the question of the prevention of misfires, as apart from the fact that most of the preventive methods are well known, it is believed that if the miner receives his explosives and means of initiation in good order, and proper care is taken in their use, the failure of a charge to fire will be a rare occurrence. The provision of central fuse capping stations on mines has gone a long way towards the elimination of misfires caused by the mishandling of safety fuse anddetonators.

Up to the end of World War n, flat-back cut and fill stoping with or without square sets was the universal method of ore extraction. Rapid changes in practice occurred during the post-war years; first, ore extraction was fully mechanized; secondly, the stope design for new levels, notably No. 17 Level Zinc Corporation Ltd. and No. 19 Level New Broken Hill Consolidated Ltd., was modified to suit this mechanization; and thirdly, sub-level and shrinkage stopes were developed in orebodies where cut and fill methods would be uneconomical. The following is a brief survey of the changes that have occurred-most of which were inaugurated during the last five years.ROCK DRILLINGDuring 1951 open stoping was investigated in detail. In order to reduce steel handling problems, forged steel onepass detachable bits were introduced, but were soon superseded by the "Swedish method". Investigation showed that when using a bar and arm mounted 3-in. drifter the overall drilling time was approximately 6 min. per ft. compared with 4 min. per ft. using the light jackhammer-airleg combination with 1-in. hex. by 4-in. collared shank tungsten carbide-tipped steel.Although competitive with tipped steels on a cost per foot drilled basis (excluding miner's time), detachable steel bits proved most unsatisfactory for hard drilling conditions.Rapid blunting necessitated frequent bit changes and thus caused lost drilling time. The variation of carbon monoxide and hydrogen utilization with the amount of the reductant in the blast furnace bosh gas was investigated for the No. 4 blast furnace at The Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd.iron and steel works. Newcastle. The degree of CO utilization decreased with increasing CO in the bosh gas; the H., utilization increased with the H., content of the gas. Empirical relationships for CO and H., utilization are proposed.H2, is 3-6 times as effective a reductant as CO at present levels of CO (34-39 per cent) and H2 (6-10 per cent) in blast furnace bosh gas. H2, gas injection into the blast furnace is proposed as a means of lowering the coke consumption, and the economics of H2 injection are evaluated.

The reconstruction of the world after the present war must inevitably be profoundly influenced by the rise and progress of New China.The principle of Chinese mathrity has been admitted by Great Britain and the United States by their abjuration of extra-territorial tights, and by the withdrawal of the Maritime Customs Administration. The United States admits equality by her declaration that Chinese are eligible for American citizenship, and the reaction to this will be swift enmity to such peoples as may impose humiliating restrictions upon Chinese citizens.Finally, the decisions of the Moscow Conference and the recent meeting of National leaders in Cairo give partnership rights to this new State in post-war reconstruction, and open the way for a rapid realization of her destiny.It seems certain that China, if so she wills, can become, within a generation or so, one of the considerable forces of the world. The toad she wiII follow will be lighted by her own inherent and intrinsic genius. Her speed of progress can no longer be forcibly influenced by other nations and the attitude towards her of somewhat contemptuous patronage hitherto adopted by the European communities bordering the Pacific Ocean must be radically modified.It is doubtful whether the European will ever reach full understanding of Chinese mentality. The Chinese "way of life" since the dawn of her civilization has been totally divergent from that of the European, but the enormous potential strength, due to the simplicity of their requirements and their steadfast industry, is a function of that "way of life." On the other hand the trend of reorganization must obviously be towards Western standards; and a wide knowledge of the potential strength of the Chinese is possible and will be essential in our post-war world. The following, necessarily inadequate, notes are therefore offered, as an indication of the obstacles to be overcome and the capacity of the Chinese executives and operatives to overcome them.For 'thirteen centuries the political and social structure of China proper (ie, excluding Mongolia, Manchuria and Tibet) has been rigidly shaped by the philosophy of Lao Tze and the ethics' of Confucius. Analyses of scheelite from all the known scheelite fields in the South Island of New Zealand have shown that the scheelites are essentially molybdenum-free. The scheelites are almost stoichiometric CaWO4, except for some strontium replacing the calcium, with a maximum of 0·92 per cent SrO. Variation in strontium content appears to be' related to the metamorphic grade of the enclosing rocks.

THE object of the air-tight stopping is either to prevent a current of fresh air from getting into the fire area, or to prevent an escape of fumes and gases from the fire area into the workings of the mine. In the former case all is "plain sailing," but in the latter case there are certain difficulties to be overcome.In the Broken Hill Proprietary mine there were two styles of stopping used during the last fire-brick and bag and the following were the chief points that determined the use of one in preference to the other:-If the required stopping were to be more or less permanent, bricks were used, also if the area to be blocked were large-bricks being so much lighter and easier to handle than bags filled with -skimps. If, however, the air contained much gas, a bag stopping was put up. Great difficulty was experienced in getting essentially surface men, such as bricklayers, to work where there was the; slightest trace of gas; miners, however, would willingly do the work, and a bag stopping could be built without skilled labour.In old drives and gangways, where there was the liability of settlement, the bag stoppings were preferable to brick. The slightest movement around the sides or foundations of the latter would cause cracks, thus rendering the brick stopping useless;whereas, in the former, there was a certain amount of elasticity.

The flotation of fine coal (minus 0.5 mm) often requires the addition of an insoluble hydrocarbon collector to apparently promote the adhesion of coal particles to air bubbles. A series of experiments was conducted using a radiotracer and narrow size fractions of clean coal to determine the effect of particle size distribution, collector addition rate, desliming of feed and emuIisification of collector on the distribution of collector between the different size fractions. The concentration of collector per gram of each size fraction was found to be approximately proportional to (average particle size)-2 except if the collector was emulsified prior to addition, the dependence altered to approximately (average particle size)-1. Mechanistic consequences are discussed.

Comminution within rod mills has been investigated by use of a matrix analysis of breakage processes. A parameter, the number of breakage stages, has been introduced and comminution within all rod mills has been expressed in terms of the number of grinding stages and a function which describes the feed rate, mill diameter, and mill speed. The effect of variation in feed rate, feed sizing analysis and mill speed on the number of breakage stages is discussed, but no general relation is proposed because more study is needed.INTRODUCTIONRod mills are normally used as the first unit of multi-unit systems for the grinding of metalliferous ores and the cost of operating rod mills may be considerable. For both economic and metallurgical reasons, it is therefore necessary that the mills should be operated efficiently and that a knowledge of the mechanism of the size reduction process within rod mills should be as complete as possible. While a qualitative assessment of the process may be of some value, a quantitative assessment gained by describing the process in mathematical terms can be of much greater use because it may also be used for design and control purposes.In this paper, an empirical mathematical model is postulated to describe the size reduction process within rod mills and it is used to analyse the effects of variations in both rates and size distributions of the feed to the mills.GRINDING CHARACTERISTICS OF ROD MILLSMyers (1953) discussed the grinding characteristics of rod mills and suggested that a pronounced screening effect, resulting in the preferential grinding of the coarser particles, occurs within the mills. In the Broken Hill South mine tile practice of issuing to the miner a quantity of fuse and a box of caps from which he made up the "rods" required for a particular blast, has been abandoned. Instead, capping stations have been established, and the miner can now obtain, from the magazines, fuses cut to accurate lengths with the detonators attached.Various types of fuse-cutting machines and crimping devices are available, but only those used by the Broken Hill South Mine Ltd. are described in this paper.The fuse-cutting machine, designed by the engineering staff, is an electrically driven unit fitted with a gear box for the purpose of adjusting the rate at which the fuse is fed to the cutting device, thereby enabling fuses of various lengths to be accurately severed from the main coil of fuse.The machine in question is designed to cut 4, 6, and 8-ft. fuses, but no difficulty should be experienced in designing a machine to cut fuses to any required lengths.

The advantages and limitations of the borehole method are outlined, and general principles of plant design are discussed.INTRODUCTIONFor many years, attempts have been made to reduce mine development costs by various methods. Some of the, techniques of tunnelling have been adopted in horizontal headings, and in main vertical shafts, mechanical plant has displaced hand labour with notable success. However, in the field of small rises and winzes, improvements have largely been effected by attention to details of procedure. The most promising avenues for' substantial reductions in cost relate to:(a) Long-hole drilling(b) The borehole method(c) Calyx drilling.Whilst each of these methods has its peculiar advantages, the borehole rising method is probably most useful, and capable of wide application.In brief, the borehole method of rising requires a, drill hole parallel to the axis of the rise. A hoisting rope is passed through the borehole, and is attached to a platform on which the rising crew are raised with their equipment to the drilling position in the rise.When properly planned, the method is particularly safe, and has generally received the approval of mine inspectors and safety authorities. The cost of preparing a feasibility study is notoriously difficult to estimate. Studies for mining projects are typically commenced when an exploration programme has identified a mineable resource and pre-feasibility studies have shown that development of the resource would lead to an economically viable project. Pre-feasibility studies will normally include an estimate of the cost of a formal feasibility study and this estimate would then be firmed up before a commitment is made to proceed with the formal study. Data for preparing the feasibility study cost estimate will be sketchy, geological investigations, metallurgical testwork, and marketing studies may be needed before the scope of the project and hence the scope of the formal study can be finally determined. Before an estimate of the work required and hence of the cost of the feasibility study can be prepared the source of project funds must be decided. Studies for internally funded projects are often less rigorous than those which must be "bankable" and subject to the scrutiny of external financial institutions. This paper sets out suggestions for preparing more accurate cost estimates for feasibility studies by ensuring that all activities are included and shows how a staged approach to preparing such studies can minimise costs and guard against cost overruns. It also provides a case study showing how the estimate compared with actual costs for a recent feasibility study completed by Pancontinental Mining Limited.

The chief source of metallic iron for steelmaking in India, even today, as it is in most part of the world, is through blast furnace (BF) route. This will continue to be so in the foreseeable future as the technology is most efficient, both process and economy-wise. However, as the world is moving into the next millennium, a critical look is being given to the process primarily because of its non-ecofriendliness (as a result of extensive use of metallurgical coal/coke requiring elaborate pollution control facilities) and huge investment involved for supporting facilities like extensive raw material preparation and handling, agglomeration, adoption of sophisticated instrumentation and control system, etc.

When perusing articles which treat of mining geology, and when talking with miners on the field, one is at times unable to follow the exact thoughts intended to be expressed, owing to the introduction of occasional technical words, the meanings of which are not thoroughly understood either by the speaker or by the hearer, or possibly by both and laymen at times accuse their technical brethren of attempting to confuse them by employing unusual words in their conversations and writings. Technical words are necessary adjuncts to all arts and sciences. They creep into our language, frequently unnoticed by those who employ them, as being more concise and convenient than longer sentences to explain frequently recurring expressions. In many cases these words give the finest shades of meaning, such as aglomerate and congzomerate, but in others they are extremely ambiguous, for instance black sand, which in some places means ilmenite, in others, chromite, tourmaline, cassiterite, in fact, any black mineral occurring in the form of sand. Then, again, much confusion is cansed by the same rock or mineral having different names, e.g, jlu01'spa'i', which is known as cand, cann, cauk, kawk, blue-John, Derbyshire spar, &c. The multiplicity of local names is of course chiefly found among the more common minerals, which are widely distributed some people have a propensity for using words the meanings of which they understand as little as' they do how to pronounce them. We have heard such persons speak 'of vughs as "bugs," and oxides as "ox hides," and to show that there was no mistake in their intentions, we have seen these and other words written in the same way as they were pronounced. Then, again, some persons, relying more on examples than definitions, get a very vague idea as to what the true meaning of a term may be the word dimite is an example in point, which we have frequently heard applied to any dyke rock that the miner was unable to recognise as granite in fact, he uses the word in a general sense, just as the field geologist provisionally employs the word " greenstone " for certain rocks, until he has an opportunity of thoroughly investigating their character.
