A Kellogg type computer model of the slag fuming process is applied in reverse to derive some thermodynamic properties of components in lead blast furnace slag. At 1200¦C, the average activity coefficients calculated were 3.40 (S.D. 0.50) for ZnO referred to the pure solid; 0.657 (S.D. 0.022) for PbO referred to the pure liquid; for the ratios y 3.175 y (referred to the Feo.9450, Fe304 pure solids) 4.19 (S.D. 1.15), and for yCaS/ 1CaO (referred to the pure solids) 5.10 (S.D. 2.96). Statistical relationships were derived for these activity coefficients and ratios as functions of the composition of slag, which contained in molar percentages 1.9 - 12.6% ZnO, 19.8 - 24.9% Fe0.9450, 0.9 - 1.6% Fe304, 0.002 - 1.9% PbO, 16.1 - 18.6% CaO, 25.9 - 31.0% SiO2, 4.8 - 5.5% MnO, 9.2 - 10.3% A101.5, 1.2 - 1.4% CaS, and 5.1 - 9.6% "Mgo" (the balance).

The flotation behaviour of the Hilton ore of Mount Isa Mines has been examined in the presence of two collectors (sodium ethyl xanthate (Ex) and sodium diisobutyldithiophosphinate (3418A)) over a range of flotation Eh values and collector additions. Tests were also conducted in the absence of collector to determine the relative contributions of natural and self-induced floatability of the major minerals in the feed. In these tests the influence of metabisulphite on the self-induced floatability of the minerals was also determined. Attention focussed on optimising the selectivity of galena flotation. It is shown that the Hilton ore sample contained lower levels of naturally hydrophobic iron sulphide minerals than are generally contained in the Mount Isa lead-zinc ore. Furthermore, the self-induced floatability of galena was less than that exhibited by the galena in the Mount Isa lead-zinc ore. Sodium metabisulphite (MBS) reduced the self-induced flotation of galena but had no effect on the natural floatability of the iron sulphide minerals.

New Zealand Steel Mining Limited operates two independent sand mining operations on the West Coast of the North Island of New Zealand. (Fig. 1)Waikato North Head 30km south of Auckland supplies ironsand concentrate as the raw feed for New Zealand Steel's works at Glenbrook, and Taharoa 70km further south, exports ironsand concentrate to Japan. Taharoa uses two sets of six low pressure Warman centrifugal pumps in series to load bulk ore carriers 3km off shore through two underwater pipelines.Waikato North Head delivers the ironsand to Glenbrook l8kms through a 200mm ID buried pipeline using two stages of high pressure positive displacement (HPPD) pumping.A high level of operating and maintenance expertise has been developed since commissioning the two systems which are proving to be reliable, efficient and of minimal impact environmentally.

The GPM Gold Operation has been employing an Albion Process™ plant at its Sotk (Zod) gold mine in Armenia since 2014. Long term data from the operation is now being published for the first time. The data presented includes concentrate throughput, as feed to the Albion Process™ plant (tonnes per day), sulphur grade in concentrate (% S), total sulphide sulphur oxidation in the Albion Process™ plant (% SOx) and gold recovery from Albion Process™ plant residues (%). The data provides a basis for evaluation of the effectiveness of the commissioning, ramp up and operation of the Albion Process™ plant. Notwithstanding the impact of a slower concentrator commissioning than expected, the plant demonstrates Series 1 behaviour on McNulty ramp up curves, indicating successful commissioning and fast ramp up. Interrogation of the data and operational experience indicates that this successful operation is a result of a process that is flexible, robust and stable, one that was designed well based on solid testwork results and pilot plant trials during the study phase undertaken by Glencore Technology and Core Resources, and where the local operators were provided with appropriate training in operation of the plant. Blast vibration control and assessment techniques have been developed which supplement traditional charge mass scaling methods. The improved techniques, which can be used to predict air and ground vibration levels at the planning stage, and to assist in the control of blasting operations, have reduced the level of operating risk concerning blast vibration. In addition to such factors as charge mass, distance and blast vibration levels, these additional techniques take account of orientation of the blasting face, topographic shielding, wavefront reinforcement, and meteorological conditions. They have assisted in compliance with specified blast vibration levels for environmental licence and mining lease conditions, the reduction of blast vibration nuisance to residents in the area surrounding a mine, and control of building and rock structure response in adjacent areas on the mine lease area.

The Mt Lyell Mine, situated in Queenstown on the west coast of Tasmania, has a production history of more than 100 years. Previous mining activities have resulted in substantial modifications to environmental conditions at Mt Lyell and disposal of sulphidic waste rock across the lease has left a legacy of on-going environmental impacts including acid drainage (AD). In 1995 Copper Mines of Tasmania (CMT) was granted a mining lease Irons the Tasmanian State Government for redevelopment of Mt Lyell and indemnity from actions concerning pollution from previous occupation and use of leased land. The Environmental Management Plan (EMP) for the Mt Lyell redevelopment committed CMT to be responsible for waste rock dumps generated from their activities and to ensure that management is in-line with best practice environmental management principles. CMT commenced commercial production in December 1995 with sulphidic material from development of the underground Prince Lyell mine reporting to a single waste rock dump constructed according to a management plan developed in July 1995 and superseded by a management plan for extension in May 1997. The CMT waste rock dump currently has a total capacity of 220 000 m- and approximately 120 000 m3 of rock have been placed to-date. Material reporting to the dump is placed in a densely compacted state to a controlled surface profile. The dump is clay capped and a final revegetated soil layer placed on top. A rock pitched drain extends down to a wetland area in order to remove stormwater and minimise possible soil erosion on the revegetated sections. An integral part of the management plan for the waste rock dump involves characterisation of waste rock to identify geochemical rock types according to acid forming potential with provision for selective placement within the dump. High-risk materials are selectively placed and covered within the core of the waste rock dump, where possible, to control sulphide oxidation. Monitoring equipment has been installed in the waste rock dump by the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) and an on-going monitoring program has been established to demonstrate the integrity of the dump cover as a barrier to the influx of atmospheric oxygen into the dump. The overall objectives of this program of work are to control the oxidation of sulphidic waste rock in the waste rock dump, minimise the risk of AD, prevent pollution of the aquatic environment and thereby demonstrate the integrity of the CMT waste rock dump management Strategy.

As well as breaking and moving rock, blast energy sets up a seismic wave in the ground which can cause significant damage to rock structures and buildings and disturbance to human occupants. This seismic ground vibration is potentially most damaging when its dominant frequency coincides with the resonant frequency of a structure, leading to high amplification factors between the input ground vibration and the resulting structural response. This paper outlines methods of identifying the resonant frequency of structures. It also describes a practical numerical method for the modification of blast designs to reduce the ground vibration energy in critical frequency ranges. The method is illustrated with two recent case studies.

Various aspects concerning gold are mentioned below. These have no common theme but suggest points of interest any one of which, if warranted, could lead to development later and elsewhere. 'High level' auriferous gravels The gold deposits of Victoria are commonly classified as being either primary or secondary. Most primary occurrences comprise gold present in quartz reefs, together with other lode-like occurrences in which gold is associated with various sulphides, with or without quartz. Secondary occurrences are derived by physical release of primary gold and subsequent concen- tration of it as a constituent of sediments. Secondary gold deposits may be themselves eroded so leading to third or even fourth generation gold.

This paper compares different results for overburden volume estimation assisted by geoestatistics, particularly using kriging methods. The main goal is to obtain the most reliable digital terrain model for the calculation of the overburden volume. The data was collected on an irregularly spaced grid and interpolated values were calculated to provide a denser, more regular data set before volume estimation. The field work was developed at the Butia-Leste Coal Mine, southern most Brazil, where an accurate survey was done using a total station theodolite with electronic data collector. The study was developed in five main steps: data acquisition, exploratory data analysis, spatial continuity measurements, point and block kriging estimation and verification of the results. Data acquisition was carried out on a 5 x 5 in grid. This dense grid provides an exhaustive data set of the real terrain against which data subsets can be compared for the various interpolation procedures and volume calculation. This provides an interesting insight into the influence of the number of data on the estimation error. Univariate statistics were used to compare each data subset and the exhaustive dataset. Ordinary kriging on the data subsets followed by contouring was carried out using Geoeas and Surfer software respectively. A subroutine written in C provided the link between the files generated in Geoeas and subsequent contouring routines embedded into the Surfer package. Omnidirectional and directional variograms were modelled defining the parameters for kriging estimation using Geoeas. Different variogram models were checked through cross validation prior to kriging. A comparison between the magnitude of the differences in volumes calculated with the different DTMs was attained. These final result indicates the sensitivity of the volume obtained to the number of data points. As the number of data points increases the estimation error decreases, but at some point there is no significant decrease in the final volume with the collection of additional data.

The elements of consistent structural de sign models for underground structures are explained. Such models should comprise at least ground properties, excavation and support methods, computational models for analysis, failure hypotheses, and in-situ monitoring. The fundamental characteristics of the interaction between ground and support are investigated. Then, plane strain models for soft ground tun- nelling and design models for rock tunnelling employing stress release at the tunnel face are elaborated. Some numerical evaluations are gi- ven in diagrams, comparing approaches of dif- ferent authors. Comments are presented on nume- rical three-dimensional models (visualized by structural models for mining in rock salt), on the interaction of in-situ monitoring and design, on structural safety for underground structures, and finally on the general develop- ment of structural design models in geo- Techniques.

Since early 1968 the Bureau of Mineral Resources (B.M.R.) has carried out VLF-EM test surveys in various parts of Australia and Papua. The aim of the work, primarily, was to examine the effect- iveness of the method as an exploration tool under a variety of Australian conditions. Selection of test areas was determined by the availability of geological, geophysical and drilling information and by the desirability to include a variety of physical variables such as depth of weathering and topography. The aim of the present account is to review the results of this work and to make an assessment of the method available to the mining industry. The author wishes to acknowledge considerable assistance both by way of data and discussion provided by Messrs. The Douglas mineral sands deposit is located 75 km north of Hamilton in western Victoria, Australia. The deposit was discovered in the late 1990s by Basin Minerals Limited and purchased by Iluka Resources Ltd in 2002. Prestrip mining commenced in December 2004, with ore mining commencing in August 2005. Douglas is the first of several projects being implemented by Iluka Resources Ltd in the Murray Basin, with all heavy mineral concentrate planned to be treated at the companyÆs mineral separation plant in Hamilton. The mineralisation at Douglas lies along the south-eastern margin of the Murray Basin. It is hosted by marine Pliocene Loxton-Parilla Sands and consists of three discrete deposits; Bondi Main, Bondi West and Bondi East. The mineralised sediments dip at a low angle to the west and lie unconformably beneath a veneer of top soil (50 - 100 mm) and subsoil (up to 600 mm) and between three to 12 m of overburden. The barren overburden, characterised by high clay content (<53 ¦m material) generally provides a stark contrast to the sandy ore, which is between 1 m (parts of Bondi East) and 15 m (Bondi Main) thick. Both overburden and ore are removed utilising standard dry mining techniques using both scraper-bulldozer and truck-excavator combinations. All ore is delivered to run-of-mine (ROM) stockpiles before being reclaimed by front end loader into the processing plant. Grade control at Douglas is based around visual dig control aided by high precision survey, which enables accurate reference to the resource drilling and block model data. Vertical excavator faces, inclined scraper faces plus regular test pits and trenches provide opportunities for in pit mapping and sampling. This data is used to refine not only the resource estimate for Douglas but also the drilling, interpretation and resource modelling methods used for similar deposits across the basin. The foundations of the geological reconciliation process at Douglas are the in pit surveys undertaken each time the mining fleet has completed building a ROM stockpile. These surveys and the subsequent interrogation of resource models enable robust estimations of the heavy mineral content of the stockpiles, which are subsequently used to predict the daily input grades into the plant during their reclamation. Reconciliation of this daily data is then undertaken at the end of each month against metallurgical production data and plant balances. Learnings and results from the reconciliation process are used to further refine subsequent resource models and modelling methods.

"Estimation of stress state as well as elastic modulus is important for the prediction of a rock slope deformation in an open pit mine since it can strongly influence the mining-induced deformation of the rock slope. This study applies a method to evaluate regional stress state and Young’s modulus by analysing the mining-induced deformation of ground. The effect of changes in regional strain state due to tectonic plate motion can be accounted for using the proposed method. Mining-induced deformation can manifest itself as changes in ground surface geometry resulting from mining activity. There are three underlying factors that can contribute to the deformation: displacement induced by the effect of gravity displacement induced by the effect of horizontal regional strain incremental change in the horizontal regional strain. The relative displacement arising from the mining excavation at the Torigatayama limestone mine in Japan has been measured by Global Positioning System (GPS). Both the regional stress state and Young’s modulus were estimated by back analysis of the change in distance between GPS stations using a 3D finite element method. It was shown that the reliability of the estimation improved with an increase in displacement due to mining progression. It was also shown that values for Poisson’s ratios of less than 0.10 are reasonable estimates with values for Young’s modulus between about 5?GPa and 10 GPa. Northern Star Resources (NSR) operates several operations utilising narrow vein stoping operations in the Kundana area. Stope dilution performance is variable across these operations, with unplanned dilution reducing individual stope economic viability, increasing risk to personnel and machinery operating in and around the stope and delaying the overall stoping sequence. Technical investigations were undertaken to objectively understand the variables which had the largest impact on stope performance and then use the findings to help develop mining strategies to reduce dilution. A stope reconciliation process was developed to compile key stope performance information such as stope design parameters, geotechnical and drill and blast factors. These were compared against the measured dilution. Production targets necessitated a high turnover of stopes in the operations, and hence a requirement for an expeditious process and mine design software with automated tools. The output of these results, together with numerical variables from geological, geotechnical and drill and blast data were analysed via multivariate regression. The analysis identified the factors with the greatest influence over stope dilution, and a forecast model was consequently created. Confidence was gained in the model when the subsequent stopes performed in line with prediction. Different drill and blast designs were subsequently trialled and found to reduce dilution. The model was then updated with the new practices, facilitating further regression analysis to identify revised key controlling factors. The subsequent production results however, displayed a poor correlation with the prediction from the revised model. Inconsistencies in drill and blast designs and execution were identified as key factors in the dilution performance. This was an important finding as the correct implementation of the design is critical and this has become a key focus for future stoping. Overall the technique presents an objective process to identify causal factors of stope dilution resulting in improved economic metrics for stope production. The process will be applied to other similar Northern Star operations.

Failures within hard rock underground excavations have historically been defined by a depth of failure, estimated in the field or through individual measurements, with a simplified failure geometry; such as 1/3 span, cubic or paraboloid. This simplified shape, volume and mass of failure is typically used to estimate in situ demand as a simplified discrete point. However, the highly variable failure geometry indicates simplified methods to estimate the mass can be erroneous in comparison to high precision LiDAR scans. Advances in technology have enabled the accurate capture of failure geometry and allow a far more accurate analysis of failures to be completed. This case study investigates a number of real-life failures to accurately define the failure geometry, the distribution of the failure parameters and compares this to traditional methodologies. This paper also outlines a suggested means of standardising failure geometry parameters whilst accounting for their variability.

Up until June 1988, Mount Thorley Coal Handling and Preparation Plant disposed of tailings by two methods. Approximately half of the plant tailings was mechanically dewatered by solid bowl centrifuges mixed with plant reject and was subsequently disposed in mine overburden spoils; the remainder was pumped to tailings ponds. Both future mine planning and environmental constraints could not allow for the long term construction of more tailings ponds so, following evaluation of available dewatering technology, belt press filters were selected for the treatment of tailings in excess of the capacity of the existing solid bowl centrifuges. Commission of the four 2.5 metre wide belt press filters soon showed that marked differences in performance were experienced when treating different coal seams. Further analysis showed that the coal tailings from different seams were quite different in terms of clay mineralogy, and these differences could be correlated with varying degrees of filter performance. Poor filter performance was experienced with coal tailings rich in sodium montmorillinite clays. A number of variables were investigated including in-line mechanical mixing of flocculant and feed slurry, cation exchange reagents such as gypsum, and upstream addition of cationic flocculant. In order to achieve satisfactory performance on the worst tailings, a combination of all of the above was required. In this paper, the reasons for selection of belt press filters and the program of investigations and testwork required to arrive at satisfactory belt press filter performance for the treatment of troublesome bentonitic rich tailings are discussed.

The efficiency of the Australian and New Zealand stock exchanges relies on a fully informed market: shareholders and investors are fully and transparently informed of all material information relating to the shares. These principles of transparency and materiality are similarly core to the Australasian Code for Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (the JORC Code). The JORC (Joint Ore Reserves Committee) Code also includes a principle of competency to ensure that the person providing the material information for public disclosure is suitably qualified and experienced.Since its inclusion into the ASX (Australian Securities Exchange) Listing rules in 1989, the JORC Code has continually improved and evolved in attempts to meet the market’s need for competent, transparent and informed disclosure. The quality and effectiveness of Public Reporting in accordance with the JORC Code is under constant challenge: some practitioners argue there is insufficient regulation, while others argue the need for greater self-regulation.This paper contributes to that discourse by exploring how well the Reporting expectations are met, and, whether Public Reporting in accordance with the JORC Code has a material impact on share-price movement.CITATION:Sterk, R and Coombes, J, 2017. "The use of reverse circulation (RC) drilling for grade control sample collection was selected by the Pueblo Viejo Mine Geology department at the recommencement of the operation in 2010. This method was selected because it allows: for multi-bench drilling (60 m hole depth, four benches of mining) to aid mine planning and provide a detailed close spaced drill data comparison with the reserve model angled drill holes to optimise the drill hole interception of the vertically controlled mineralisation dry sample collection in areas of excessive surface and groundwater mining operations to commence with the long assay return period (due to the need for the samples to be shipped overseas for analysis) until the on-site laboratory is operational.To date, 118 302 m of drilling has been completed throughout the operations of two open pits: Monte Negro and Moore. Two drill rigs (contractor and site-owned and operated) with three generations of sampling systems have been used to date. Throughout the drilling a 20 per cent quality assurance, quality control (QAQC) sample check (blanks, field duplicates and standards) have been used to check the drilling and laboratories performance. In addition, a total of 1104 fines samples were collected to compare the drill chip samples collected and the fines lost with two of the sample systems used.The drilling to date has highlighted the need for a complete and coordinated system to be used before sufficient confidence in the quality of the samples collected is achieved.The complete system must be set-up and coordinated to obtain the best quality sample possible. This complete package includes: drill bit size and shape for the rock being drilled and mineralisation targeted face sampling hammers with the correctly sized hammer shrouds sample hose routing to reduce sample flow turbulence and choking blow-down valves to eliminate drill hole water that has entered the drill string during rod changes correct drilling techniques targeting sample quality a sample system that captures the fines for inclusion into the sample.These improvements can be obtained without reducing the drilling rates.The measurements required to demonstrate the improvement in the sample quality will be the focus of future work within the department.CITATION:Goers, M and Almond, M, 2012.
