Many types of micro-organisms inhabit iron ore deposits contributing to biogenic formation and conversion of iron oxides and associated minerals. Bacteria such as Paenibacillus polymyxa are capable of significantly altering the surface chemical behaviour of iron ore minerals such as haematite, alumina, calcite and silica. Differing mineral surface affinities of bacterial cells and metabolic products such as proteins and polysaccharides can be utilised to induce their flotation or flocculation. Mineral-specific bioreagents such as proteins are generated when bacteria are grown in the presence of haematite, alumina, calcite and silica. Alumina-grown bacterial cells and proteins separated from such cells were found to be capable of separating alumina from haematite. Biodegradation of iron ore flotation collectors such as amines and oleates can be effectively utilised to achieve environmental control in iron ore processing mills.

As Australia’s coal and iron ore export volumes increase to meet international market growth, port terminals, mining operations and rail transport systems can be the source of increased dust emission. Current and future sustainable expansion must minimise dust emission from bulk handling and transport operations located in close proximity to residential areas. Lower level dust emissions can be controlled by operational measures such as water addition to products, and use of water spray on stockpile surfaces. Recent research has shown that higher levels of dust emission can be more effectively controlled by understanding and treating the dust characteristics of each individual bulk product. Application of this research, progressively being applied at Australia’s coal and iron ore port terminals and rail transport systems, is achieving compliance with health standards and minimising dust nuisance effects to an acceptable level.

Magmatic and/or hydrothermal fluid systems in island or mountain arcs self-organise to critical states subject to perturbation by changes in the regional stress, which plays a controlling role in the containment of overpressured fluids. Whether the magmatic arc is under compression (eg Andes, northern Honshu) or extension (eg Taupo Volcanic Zone, New Zealand) is a key factor controlling the ease of magmatic or hydrothermal fluid ascent. Abrupt changes in the stress regime have the potential to induce major episodes of fluid redistribution. Large earthquake ruptures along plate boundaries may induce such changes over broad areas, also contributing to fluid redistribution by renewing fault permeability along the causative rupture zone or reactivating distant fault-fracture permeability by shaking from radiated waves. High-resolution geophysical investigations of active arc systems and the subduction thrust interface underlying their fore-arcs reveal repositories of overpressured hydrothermal fluids. In active magmatic arcs under compression such as NE Honshu or Cascadia, there is evidence for a heterogeneous distribution of overpressured hydrothermal fluids in the middle-to-lower crust trapped around the base of the upper crustal seismogenic zone. Investigations of the subduction thrust interface responsible for great (Mw = 8.0) ‘megathrust’ earthquake ruptures has revealed in some instances (Cascadia, SW Japan) the existence of a belt of non-volcanic tremor (NVT) with accompanying slow slip episodes defining the base of the megathrust interface at 40 ± 5 km and 350°C??-??550°C. Aqueous fluid at these depths is likely derived from dehydration reactions accompanying the basalt-eclogite transition in subducted oceanic crust. NVT sequences in the hanging-wall above the interface may be defining migration pathways into the overlying crust.The potential for eruptive episodes in magmatic arcs and redistribution of hydrothermal fluids is assessed in the light of the stress changes that followed the 2011 Mw9.0 Tohoku subduction thrust rupture which extended along strike for over 500 km and down-dip for over 150 km, with maximum slip of c 50 m.

The evaluation of historical goldfields is currently topical, reflecting a high gold price, improvements in knowledge and technology. and lack of greenfield sites. Many goldfields comprise narrow gold-quartz veins which are structurally complex with an irregular distribution of gold; variable geometry and architecture; and display late deformational effects. The study of historical mine records can be an important tool during early and advanced project evaluation since it contributes to understanding the orebody, exploration target size and setting expectations. The historic Engineer Mine property is located 32 km west of Atlin, British Columbia on the east side of Tagish Lake. The economically important Engineer and Double Decker veins belong to a NNE-SSW vein set. These are narrow, commonly <2 m dilational veins with a minor sinistral strike component and of an epithermal type. Documented ore production between 1910 - 1952 is recorded as approximately 14 263 t at 39.4 g/t Au and 19.5 g/t Ag (for 18 000 oz Au and 8950 oz Ag). The underground workings consist of about 5500 m of tunnels, shafts, raises and stopes over eight levels. The mine is currently being re-evaluated. In 2011, an Inferred Mineral Resource of 41 000 t at 19 g/t Au for 25 000 oz Au (at a 5 g/t Au cut-off) was defined from historical data supported by modern drilling into the Engineer and Double Decker veins. An improved technique for the quick and accurate measurement of the weight and centre of mass in the horizontal plane of large machines has been developed. On-site weighing of large plant such as bucket wheel dredgers is an important part of the commissioning procedure. The results from the weighing assist in determining the stability of the machine and also enable confirmation of the structural weight distribution used for stress analysis at the design stage. In this paper the techniques previously used for weighing are reviewed and the sources of error using these methods examined. A full descrip- tion of the current technique and procedure is given explaining how the measurement system comprising strain gauge load cells, displacement transducers, wind speed and direction sensors, data logger, computer and software was developed to enable quick and accurate measurements to be made. Proposed modifications to software necessitated by the replace- ment of current measuring instrumentation and computer are discussed. A typical example of measurements from the weighing of a large dredger, illustrating the accuracy of the new technique is given and the calibration technique used to check the accuracy of the force and moment measurements is explained. An outline of how the results are used to certify the machine for operation is given.

Chance find of an economically important mineral on the sur- face and its exploitation without proper exploration work, has become the habit of humanity since the Bronze Age. The explora- tion and exploitation techniques have, however, been substan- tially improved in the technologically developed western world and system controlled major communist countries. Nevertheless, the greatest need is felt in the Third World countries where large mineral potential exists, but with inadequate investments in exploration and exploitation techniques, a handicap that has been beneficial to the more developed countries, since long. The great number of the Third World countries which are striv- ing hard to develop, need to formulate mineral exploration and exploitation strategies which could enable them to develop their resources. This requires planning and creating new concepts of ore deposit types and genetic models, rheology, economics and their innovation and integration. The following approach could help them to be economically "more independent" by the end of this century. 1. Bridging of pure and applied geology gap, and creating con- sciousness of research and development. 2. Revision of mineral resources concepts adopted to modern technological world. 3. Improved mineralogical research, and determinative miner- alogy as an important asset. 4. Creative research and establishing know-how, with philosophical base for regional exploration projects. 5. Indepth investigation into the origin and growth of earth as a system, and its importance in the association, quality, and quantity of metallic, non-metallic and energy resources con- centrations. 6. Mineral beneficiation, targets and strateties; methods of eco- nomic and improved recovery systems. Development of alter- native technology, and utilization of mineral technology strategies. 7. Theoretical and practical modelling by conventional and com- puter techniques of the existing and expected mineral resources, and mineral development. 8. Critical analysis of the status of mineral economics of the Third World and developed world with forecasts for the year 2000 based on problems faced by the developing world. 9. Minerals at cross roads of International Interdependence. 10. Philosophical, realistic, traditional and modern strategies for mineral development. This paper presents the results of a large scale survey of The Australasian Institute for Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) membership. This survey aimed to understand and define the key issues and drivers that AusIMM members perceived would shape the development of the Australian minerals industry over the next 20 - 30 years. Nine hundred and fifty-nine participants rated the importance of 11 issues and six drivers (generated from interviews with AusIMM members), and 236 of these participants also provided qualitative descriptions of the future. Issues were defined as problems or opportunities for the minerals industry that may be controlled or influenced by the industry, while drivers were defined as those factors that will influence the direction of the industry that are not within the control of the industry. The quantitative data revealed that the top four issues, in order of their perceived importance to the Australian minerals industry, were: investment in exploration, workforce, health and safety, and innovation. The top three drivers in order of their perceived importance, were: economics of mining, global context and Australian society. While the top four issues were largely consistent across professional groups examined, metallurgy and mineral processing professionals rated water inputs and energy inputs significantly higher than the other professional groups. For the list of drivers, there was strong agreement regarding their ranked order of importance across the professional groups examined. Within the qualitative data, however, a single issue (technology) and a single driver (economics of mining) dominated participantsÆ descriptions of the future. These findings provide important input into a broader program of scenario development for the Australian minerals industry being undertaken by CSIRO and its partners. The results of this study demonstrate the importance of using a mixed methodology in generating these inputs to understand more fully how important stakeholders view the future and the factors that will shape it. The results of this study are also discussed with respect to the role that CSIRO may play in facilitating the exploration of uncertainty around the future of the Australian minerals industry.

The great variety of geological conditions in French coal deposits has obliged the industry to develop different thick seam mining methods. In very steep seams in a dense deposit where stowing is necessary to avoid spontaneous combustion, surface subsidence and water problems, a rising horizontal slice method is used, the coal being hard enough and the seams regular (Lorraine). In very thick and irregular steep seams where the stowing is not necessary, a sub-level horizontal slicing is used; a third method has to be used in Dauphine.

The Porgcra gold deposit is an epithermal gold base-metal deposit located in the Enga Province of Papua New Guinea. Gold-silver- spha le rite-galena-pyrite mineralization is related to stocks and dykes of dioritic composition which have intruded a series of folded marine sediments, mainly shales and siltstones, often with calcareous and carbon- aceous horizons, of middle Jurassic to middle Eocene age. The most intensely mineralized zone is at Waruwari Hill, where the mineralization occurs predominantly as massive mixed sulphide veins, and less frequently as quartz-chlorite veins and as disseminations. Mineralization occurs in all rock types and several phases of mineralization have been Recognized.

An ilmenite ore from the Murray Basin was initially characterised using combined X-ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (XRF), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Electron Probe Microanalysis (EPMA) techniques. XRF analysis showed the ilmenite sample contained 58.7 wt per cent TiO2 and 26.2 wt per cent Fe2O3. Major impurities included: Cr2O3 (4.5 wt per cent), Al2O3 (2.7 wt per cent), SiO2 (1.9 wt per cent), Mn3O4 (1.5 wt per cent) and MgO (1.1 wt per cent). Manganese and magnesium were present as solid solution components within the ilmenite lattice while the elevated Al2O3 and SiO2 levels were due to separate aluminosilicate gangue minerals. Chromium was associated with discrete chrome spinel gangue phases of variable composition, (Fe,Mg)(Cr,Al)2O4. Quantitative XRD analysis of the sample identified rutile (12 per cent), ilmenite (11 per cent), and pseudorutile (67 per cent) as the main titanium-containing phases and chrome-rich spinels (seven per cent) as the major impurity phase. Minor quartz, aluminosilicates, zircon and monazite were also present. The ilmenite was mixed with synthetic graphite, pressed into pellets and reduced carbothermally in nitrogen at 1200 and 1400°C with C/O molar ratio of 1.2. Titanium oxide in the ilmenite was converted to titanium oxycarbonitride. Iron oxides were reduced to metallic iron. The Changes of impurities as a result of reduction was examined by SEM and EPMA analyses. Iron and chromium oxides within Fe-rich chromite were reduced to form a Fe-Cr-C alloy. Mg-rich chrome spinels were partly reduced at 1200°C. Zircon particles were not reduced at 1200°C, but were significantly reduced at 1400°C, with the particles becoming porous and the silicon being removed.

The Airborne Thematic Mapper is an eleven channel digital scanner which acquires image data in the visible, near infra-red, short wave infra-red and thermal infra-red wave- lengths. A description of the system is presented which includes details of the operating wavelengths and performance parameters of the scanner. Consideration is also given to the aircraft installation requirements. During January 1984 the scanner surveyed the mineral rich areas of Leonora, Laverton and Kalgoorlie in Western Australia. This is a region of intense exploration activity for gold and base metals. Some 30,000 square kilometres were systematically surveyed in a period of ten days. This scanner was flown at 7,000 metres altitude giving a ground pixel size of 17.5 by 17.5 metres. The flight line spacing was 8 kilometres. The overall project took some thirty days from conception to completion. The planning and execution of this operation are described in detail. The resulting magnetic tapes provided 11 channels of digital image data over a 30,000 square kilometre area and a variety of image processing techniques were employed in order to capitalise fully on the results. The imagery provides a powerful tool for the geological mapping of the terrain. The data can also be used to monitor the environmental effects of mining operations.

"Mine waste rock management involving waste rock movement and placement, is a critical aspect in the planning of open pit mining operations, as the waste rock haulage cost can be the largest portion of the mine operating cost. The concept of sustainable development in the mining industry also encourages environmentally friendly waste dumps that have zero hazards to people and the surrounding environment. Therefore, a detailed waste management schedule must satisfy economic and environmental considerations. However, the available tools in the market cannot provide optimal waste dumping schedules to meet all these constraints. This paper introduces a user-friendly and automatic tool to optimise the waste dumping schedule, which minimises the haulage cost, and covers the encapsulation of reactive materials to minimise acid mine drainage problems. This tool has been developed by using a new mixed integer programming (MIP) mathematical model that considers both single-lift and multilift dumping scenarios. The application of the proposed tool on a data set collected from a gold mine shows that the multilift dumping scenario has provided a more flexible and economical waste dumping schedule than the single-lift scenario, and both scenarios satisfy environmental requirements.Citation:Fu, Z, Topal, E and Erten, O, 2016. Open pit mining commenced at Lihir Island in 1997 and is undertaken using a conventional drill, blast, load, haul methodology. Unique challenges at the operation include an active geothermal system, a well-developed advanced argillic blanket in the upper portions of the orebody and high rainfall. Grade control is effective utilising routine blast cone sampling. While this provides ‘just in time’ grade information for mill blending, there are opportunities to improve scheduling of mill feed, based on material classification of clay types and sulfur grades. The nature of the clay can impact on the handling properties while the sulfur grade is an important guide for autoclave blending, required for refractory gold. Drilling below the pit floor introduces hazards from the identified geothermal field. A trial Reverse Circulation (RC) program was implemented with the aim of defining four benches below the active mining bench. A comprehensive risk analysis, including the geothermal environment, was undertaken to design a drill collaring procedure with pressure diversion equipment. Operator exposure was minimised through ‘nil on foot’ principles with the driller located in an onboard cab, utilising remote rod handling. Sampling personnel operate in an elevated platform with access to protective covering. Samples from blastholes and the RC holes are processed at two site laboratories. One provides conventional Au fire assays with additional Infrared Combustion (Leco style) S analysis. The second laboratory collects material classification details from portable XRF (pXRF), near infra-red spectrometry (ASD) and Hardness Indicator Testing (HIT). An existing workflow was updated by the site to deal with the additional samples and ensure production ‘turn around times’ were retained for short-term planning. This required some changes to drying temperatures, compositing and screen sizing for the material classification. All results from the two laboratories are loaded into a centralised acQuire database for estimation into a single block model that informs the 13 week medium term planning (MTP) schedule. This paper describes some of the logistical issues faced when drilling in a geothermal area. It also discusses the selection and commissioning Quality Assurance of the sampling equipment and drill rig. Integration of the resulting assay data with existing resource models is also explained.

The lunar subsurface, particularly the lava tubes formed by ancient volcanic activity, presents a promising environment for establishing safe and sustainable human habitats on the Moon. Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs), widely used for excavating tunnels on Earth, offer a potential solution for developing these subsurface spaces. However, the unique lunar conditions, including extreme temperatures, high vacuum, radiation, and the extraordinary strength and abrasiveness of lunar rocks, necessitate significant adaptations to existing TBM technology. This study investigates the feasibility of utilising TBMs for lunar subsurface exploration and base construction, addressing the challenges posed by the harsh lunar environment. We review previous conceptual designs for lunar TBMs, highlighting their strengths and limitations in addressing these challenges. Additionally, we explore innovative excavation methods, such as microwave-assisted rock weakening and undercutting techniques, to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of lunar TBM operations. By evaluating the geological characteristics of the lunar crust and analysing the potential of lava tubes as launching points for TBM operations, this study provides a comprehensive assessment of the technical requirements and operational considerations for lunar TBM implementation. The findings of this research contribute to the growing body of knowledge on lunar base development and pave the way for future human exploration and utilisation of the Moon’s subsurface resources.

Pipe umbrella systems have effectively been used as an additional support system in the working area in weak ground conditions during the last decades. Thus, a considerable number of applications accounts in urban tunnelling with shallow overburden. However, this support system is also successfully used when a tunnel alignment crosses fault zones, sediments, moraines or talus with overburdens from shallow to deep. The pipe umbrella support system itself is termed differently worldwide – synonyms are canopy tube umbrella method, umbrella arch method, or long fore-poling method.One main reason for the increase in application is that this support system closes cost-effectively the gap between reasonable, normal supported tunnels and tunnels supported with more expensive special techniques like horizontal jet-grouting or ground freezing. By using this system, many projects can be built more cost effective without decreasing the common level of safety.The pipe umbrella construction method is pretty young, so the knowledge about this system has been intensely researched in the last decade. This led to an enormous increase in understanding the interaction between support system and surrounding ground, the mode of action, and the important details for construction.Pipe umbrella support systems are applied in difficult ground conditions, so a special developed measurement arrangement was used to observe deformations ahead of the working face during tunnelling. The evaluation of collected data sets identifi ed that cased-drilling systems have clear advantages compared to predrilling systems during the installation process in weak ground conditions. This may become important depending on project requirements, so this difference must be considered in design as well as in the tender document specifications.

Since the advent of plate tectonic modelling, the Ramu-Markham valley has been thought the site of a classical island-arc/conti- nent collision zone. In this interpretation the units south of the Markham Valley are held to be island are / micrcontinental mate- rial accreted to Australia and those north of the valley are thought to represent a separate Finisterre island-arc terrane. Recent remapping by the Geological Survey of Papua New Guinea shows: (1) there is no terrane boundary along the Ramu-Markham valley (2) the Finisterre Volcanics are probably part of either a fore-arc sequence or oceanic plateau obducted onto a microcontinent/ volcanic-arc composite terrane, accreted to the continental Australian plate. A new tectonic model is proposed for northern PNG and involves: (I) Eocene to Late Oligocene subduction below a microcontinent remote from Australia to produce the Sepik are and related intrusives, the Finisterre Volcanics (fore-arc or possible oce- anic plateau), together with the Alife blueschist. (2) obduction of the Sepik arc in Late Oligocene-Early Miocene times over the advancing Australian plate. This resulted in crustal melting, some of the products of which are the Mid- dle to Late Miocene Akuna and Bismarck intrusive complexes of the Maramuni arc. (3) obduction of the Finisterre Volcanics began in Early Pliocene times and continues today. (4) post-Middle Miocene mineralisation is the result of melting after obduction of the Sepik microcontinent.

Deposit-10/11A is situated in the iron rich Bailadila region of India comprising haematite ore of average grade 65 per cent Fe. The deposit production line was commissioned in the year 2002 having a capacity of 5 Mt/a. The plant has the state of the art mineral processing equipments.The ore is transported from mines to crushing plant by means of dumpers. The ore is comminuted in two stages to get 150 mm top size product and this product is transported through conveyor system and is stored in silos as feed stock for beneficiation plant. In the beneficiation plant this crushed product is wet screened in two stages to produce a product of lump (-150 + 10 mm) and fines (-10 + 3.15 mm). The product of -3.15 mm top size is fed to primary classifier for a size separation at 150 µm. The resultant product (-3.15 mm + 150 µm) is dewatered and transported to fi ne ore product stock yard through conveyor system. The minus 150 µm material from classifier overflow is fed to cyclones (508 mm cyclone battery with an apex of 65 mm) for desliming at 45 µm and to recover ultrafi nes (-150 + 45 µm). The cyclone overfl ow slimes (-45 µm) along with water is treated in lamella thickeners to recover process water. The thickener underflow material is transported to tailing pond (discharge rate is 300 m3/h at a specific gravity of 1.4) by pumping through HDPE (high density poly ethylene) pipeline and the over flow water is being recirculated. The water requirement for beneficiation is approx 1.5 m3 per ton of ore.This paper aims at identifying and quantifying the factors that affect the overall plant performance (grade and recovery) during the different seasonal variations especially in the rainy season (mid-June to end October). The effect of seasonal variations on unit operations such as milling, classification, thickening and filtration are discussed. Specific cases are presented as examples and recommendations are formulated.

In April 2003 plant upgrades in the æLow GradeÆ Cadia Hill circuit were undertaken in order to improve concentrate quality and metal recoveries from the flotation circuit. The major changes involved: circuit reconfiguration to allow all concentrates to be reground to less than 38 ¦m prior to final cleaning; increasing ball charge in the regrind mill to fully utilise all of the installed power; desliming of the cleaner scavenger concentrate to improve the circuit water balance; and the inclusion of a gravity concentrator in the regrind circuit to recover more free gold to bullion.Once the flotation circuit had stabilised under the new operating conditions concentrate launder modifications and increased froth crowding on the scavenger flotation cells permitted the introduction of stronger collectors without compromising concentrate quality or circuit stability.Twelve months on, the copper concentrate grade has increased by two per cent and metal recoveries increased by three per cent and seven per cent for copper and gold respectively. The project capital outlay of approximately $2.0 million has been repaid in less than three months. This paper will review the project from the design, construction and commissioning perspective as well as the subsequent debottlenecking exercise that was required to eventually yield the full benefits of this upgrade.

Grade control programs aim to deliver economic tonnes to the mill via accurate definition of ore and waste. The foundation of a successful program is high quality sampling supported by geology and a suitable data management and modelling system. Underground sampling methods include chip, channel and panel samples; grab/muck pile samples; and drill-based samples. Grade control strategy is related to mining method and orebody type. Sampling protocols must be designed to suit the style of mineralisation in question. Holistic studies focussing on ore mineralogy and gold particle deportment, size and distribution are required for sample collection and preparation protocol optimisation through ‘Theory of Sampling’ application. Where possible, such programs should be undertaken early in the life of a project. Appropriate assaying procedures are also required. Program implementation will require suitably skilled individuals to train and mentor staff, with ongoing Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) monitoring and review will allow protocols and staff to be updated as required.
