"All underground coal mines in Australia are required to develop a Spontaneous CombustionManagement Plan (SCMP). The New South Wales Government has developed a guideline (MDG1006) to assist operations to comply with this requirement. A reference document is alsosupplied with the guideline that describes the type of information that is needed for input to theplan, including identifying possible tests that can be used for propensity assessment. However,there is no clear indication of what program of sampling and testing is suffi cient to provide adefi nitive assessment of spontaneous combustion propensity prior to and during mining. This paper reviews the existing methods available for quantifying spontaneous combustion propensity and discusses the sampling requirements that are needed from exploration to mining. A new, more defi nitive method of spontaneous combustion testing is also presented that benchmarks coal self-heating performance from mine ambient temperature to thermal runaway. Examples of the eff ectiveness of this new test method for identifying and quantifying reactive pyrite in coal as well as quantifying the diff erence between dry and wet season conditions are provided in the paper."

Central Colliery was developed to exploit large underground reserves in the German Creek lease. It was planned from the outset as a retreating longwall operation and is the first longwall mine in Queensland. Longwall mining is not new to Australia but all previous experience has been confined to the coalfields of New South Wales. There was no precedent for longwall extraction in the markedly different geological setting of the Bowen Basin in Central Queensland. Various investigations were thus carried out during the initial development of Central Colliery, prior to the installation of the longwall, to ascertain the geotechnical characteristics of the coal seam and the adjacent strata and to predict the performance of the heading and pillar design as mining proceeds to depth. Laboratory tests showed the coal to be weak with an unconfined compressive strength of 9.6 MN/m2. Site inspection and geophysical correlation revealed a shear zone and extensive intraformational shear planes in the seam. The latter were found to exert a controlling influence on rib reaction in the headings. This behaviour was predicted by finite element modelling of the development headings which indicated that mining induced stresses in the coal would be relieved by block movement of the ribs. A chain pillar width versus depth curve was established for yielding pillar design based on empirical and computational methods. This gave pillar widths from 25m to 48m over the proposed depth range of 150m to 300m. Finite element modelling of the 25m pillars chosen for the first gateroads confirmed the overall stability of the design but suggested that rib spall could be significant in the adjacent tailgate. The ASC has a dual role of business facilitator and law enforcer. Only certain types of expert report are of interest to the ASC. The powers of the old Companies Code and the Corporations law are compared. NCSC Policy Release 149 was dependent on the prescriptive powers given to the NCSC in the Companies Code. The Corporations Law does not give the ASC power to prescribe the contents of expert reports. The requirement now is for all necessary information. Research evidence is that some investors want simpler prospectuses while others need more detail. The ASC's examination of expert reports is after registration of primary documents. This leads to a necessity for experts to maintain adequate records.

"Most new mining projects require an initial assessment of the locations and volumes of potential acid forming (PAF) waste that is likely to be moved and dumped in surface waste stockpiles. This requires sampling of the waste rock zones and submitting the samples for a series of tests. Key to the outcome of the waste characterisation process is obtaining sufficient samples that are representative of the various rock types both in number and spatial distribution.Various regulatory bodies throughout Australia and the rest of the world are currently struggling with how to define minimum amounts of sampling to achieve realistic estimates without imposing excessive costs and time constraints on a project.This paper addresses two aspects of the process: what constitutes a æsufficientÆ number of samples how to use those samples in determining volumes of likely PAF material.Geostatistical methods of characterising orebodies with large numbers of samples are routinely used in the mining industry by geologists and geostatisticians to estimate and classify Mineral Resources. In theory exactly the same methods can be used to estimate PAF waste locations and volumes.In practice the number and spatial distribution of dedicated PAF waste samples at feasibility stage is typically so small that it is almost impossible to estimate the spatial distribution of PAF material with any degree of confidence at all. Consequently, the common approach is to characterise a few samples from a lithological unit and then assume that they represent the unit as a whole. Concerns regarding the uncertainty of stope dilution at MMG Dugald River Underground Mine led to a trial stoping program to acquire full-scale comprehensive geotechnical information and to test the validity of the geotechnical and mining parameters. Given that stope production drilling and blasting is a key parameter that influences dilution a detailed stope blast vibration project was implemented. The stoping trial consisted of 19 stopes, a combination of both sublevel open stoping and longitudinal and transverse stopes, of which five were monitored for blast vibrations.The blast vibration project utilised 20 triaxial geophones and five triaxial accelerometers installed in the hanging wall of five monitored stopes. For each stope fired, full blast waveforms were recorded along with detailed information of the blast design. Analysis of the blast vibrations used the Holmberg-Persson approach, with potential damage determined by the relative (Holmberg-Persson) K values.The project identified the benefit of parallel, breakthrough slot holes in reducing blast vibration damage. The results show that radial rings toeing or stabbing into the stope wall lead to higher vibrational energy yield which contributed to increased overbreak. Hanging wall overbreak, by comparison, with parallel, breakthrough blastholes with 1 m standoff, combined with lower density explosive charging (0.8 EP) and increased delays limited blast vibration damage. A number of ring burdens from 1.4 m to 2.5 m were monitored with no difference in terms of energy yield being identified. The Mine is an underground zinc (Zn), lead (Pb) and silver (Ag) operation in central New South Wales (NSW). Broadly speaking the Mine has two domains that require rehabilitation, the mine industrial area (MIA) and the tailings storage facility (TSF). The MIA has been used for the handling and processing of ore and contains elevated sulfate, sulfide and metals (Pb, Zn). The TSF receives the by-products of processing, that is, potentially acid forming (PAF) tailings which also contain elevate sulfate, sulfide and metals. Typically, the rehabilitation of a TSF involves two controls. Firstly, controlling the potential for PAF tailings to form acid rock drainage (ARD) by limiting interaction with oxygen. Secondly, once the tailings are unsaturated, limiting interaction with water (usually as rainfall) to reduce the potential for ARD to be transported to the receiving environment. These two controls are often employed in the form of a cover.In semi-arid environments there are many Australian examples of covers that have been built to limit interactions of mine by-products with oxygen and water. Typically, the covers contain one or more layers and are built from soil and rock which may include run-of-mine rock. The Mine however has limited supplies of stockpiled soil; and run-of-mine rock is not generated in large volumes because it is used as backfill underground. A cover design strategy was developed to cater for these limiting factors. The strategy identified soil, ore and rock accretion (the accretion) below the MIA could be a potential source of borrow material for the cover. The purpose of this paper is to describe the cover design process, the method and results of large (2 m tall) column trials that were used as a cost-effective way to trial three cover options and finally, the paper describes the water balance that was developed from the column trial results and subsequent modelling using SVFlux.CITATION:Rohde, T K and Jamson, N, 2018. Underground coal heating is a significant hazard in some coal mines. The broad principles of how underground coal heatings occur is reasonably known, however the technique for locating the heatings in often inaccessible goaf has been proved to be difficult. Since 2002, CSIRO, with the support of the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) has been undertaking investigations to apply and develop innovative surface-based radon technique for locating the underground heatings in Australia. This paper presents the progress of the investigation.

For the past 150 years, drilling and blasting has been an integral part of the underground mining industry in Australia. Ever since Busby's Bore was developed using black powder to supply Sydney with water, miners have been drilling holes, filling them with explosives and blasting the rock into a manageable size. The drilling was fairly straight forward but the explosives were always a mysterious commodity. It worked, but how and why? The explosives industry is now working much closer to the mining industry to dispel these mysteries and also to aid the advancement of explosive technology. This paper looks at the results of these advances in the form of explosives, accessories and blasting systems.

South Australia's economic development has relied heavily on the mineral industry. In the late 1840s the rich copper deposits at Kapunda and Burra saved the Colony's economy when South Australia became a world copper producer. Copper lodes developed at Moonta-Wallaroo during the 1860s brought further prosperity when mining activities at Kapunda and Burra were in decline. In addition to those large mines there were many smaller workings scattered through the Flinders and Mount Lofty Ranges producing copper, gold, silver, lead and zinc. Most of the mines of this period were worked by Cornish immigrants who brought their own technology and mining methods with them. These people have left a cultural legacy unique in Aus- tralia. In this Jubilee 150 year (1986) the Department of Mines and Energy, working in conjunction with the Department of Environment and Planning, is helping to preserve and interpret selected historic mining sites, most of which have been neglected since their closure. This work is designed to draw people's interest to mining history by providing interpreted sites for them to visit and to demon- strate the importance of the mining industry in South Australia's cultural and economic develop- Ment.

Environmental Geochemistry International (EGi) and the Ian Wark Research Institute (IWRI) collaborated in a three-year Australian Minerals Industry Research Association (AMIRA) research project (Project Number P387A) focussed on the prediction and kinetic control of acid mine drainage. As part of this project, single addition, and sequential net acid generation (NAG) testing was carried out on sulfide mineral samples. The test samples comprised a range of synthetic waste materials prepared using a quartz bulk and controlled quantities of the commonly occurring sulfide minerals; pyrite (FeS2), pyrrhotite (Fe7S8), arsenopyrite (AsFeS), chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), chalcocite (Cu2S), covellite (CuS), bornite (Cu5FeS4), galena (PbS) and sphalerite (ZnS). NAG test results clearly show that there are significant differences between the acid forming potential of sulfide minerals. The NAG test results for each mineral were compared with theoretical acidity values (NAPP*). The NAPP* calculation was based on stoichiometric oxidation reactions assumed for each of the sulfide minerals. Sequential NAG values for pyrite corresponds closely to predicted NAPP* values, confirming the assumption that pyrite oxidation occurs according to the stoichiometry assumed. For the pyrite sample with 5 wt per cent S, two NAG stages were sufficient for all of the sulfur to be released to solution. Since sulfides in waste materials will generally be dominated by pyrite, results also confirm the validity of including NAG testing for ARD evaluation of most waste rock. NAG testing confirms that of the sulfide minerals examined, only pyrite, pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite and chalcopyrite are acid producing, ie able to produce leachate with a pH less than 4.5. In the case of sphalerite, galena, bornite, chalcocite and covellite the pH of the final NAG solution was greater than 4.5. The significant differences between the acid forming potential of different sulfide minerals could lead to overestimation of acid producing potentials based on NAPP values calculated from total per cent S alone, ie assuming all S is present as pyrite. The oxidation of galena during the NAG test resulted in the consumption of acid. The examination of the galena surface by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) after oxidation in peroxide solution indicated the presence of polysulfide. The reaction of sulfide to polysulfide is acid consuming, thus explaining the net acid consuming behaviour of galena in the NAG test. This reaction pathway may provide a possible explanation for the lower than expected acid production observed for some of the other sulfide minerals examined.

Best practice for the submission of samples to an internal or commercial laboratory requires quality control materials to be included for the purpose of independently and comprehensively assessing laboratory performance. These quality controls include the use of certified reference materials (CRMs) and may be blind to the laboratory. Iron ore companies purchase these materials from reputable manufacturers from stock of run-of-mine materials at the appropriate grades. The international standard, ISO 17034 (ISO, 2016), specifies the competency requirements for organisations manufacturing reference materials, and includes rigorous requirements for the assessment of homogeneity, stability and establishment of property values and their uncertainties. Homogeneity is one of the most important measures of suitability for all certified reference materials and refers to the degree to which the composition and properties of a sample are uniform throughout the batch, relative to the analytical precision of the method. More specifically, homogeneity studies of candidate reference materials should be assessed for both within sample variance and between sample variance with appropriate statistical controls. The design and application of homogeneity studies are discussed as they apply to both crushed and pulverised reference materials. Crushed certified reference materials have been utilised by the iron ore industry for a number of years and provide the user with a critical assessment of variances in sample preparation in addition to analysis. Crushed reference materials are similar in presentation to an RC sample and are generally used as discrete parcels of material submitted to the laboratory from the field. Pulverise certified reference materials miss the sample preparation step and are subsampled from th delivered sachet at the point of analysis. This paper compares the relative homogeneity performance of crushed and pulverised certified reference materials by grade across key iron ore chemical constituents. Outcomes are benchmarked to the international standard ISO 9516 (ISO, 2003) for the determination of various elements in iron ores by lithium borate fusion and X-ray fluorescence. Practical implications are discussed with reference to a case study from an iron ore laboratory in the Pilbara.

A research project incorporating a number of mine site exercises to reduce the effects of fire incidents and possible consequent health and safety hazards has been undertaken focused on the application of mine fire simulation software packages for contaminate tracing and fire modelling in coal and metalliferous mines. This paper examines aspects of introduction of inert gases to underground workings to aid recovery of a mine following a fire. Broad conclusions from work undertaken at individual Australian coal mines are discussed as examples. The effort is built around the introduction of the fire simulation computer program æVentgraphÆ to the Australian mining industry and the consequent modelling of fire scenarios in selected different mine layouts. Case studies have been developed to examine usage of inertisation units and particularly application of the GAG jet engine unit. One example has focused on selection of the best surface portal location for placement of the GAG for most efficient suppression of a fire. A second has examined a situation with significant seam gas being emitted on the face. This has shown that under certain face dip angles stopping the mine surface fan to reduce dilution of GAG exhaust gases will cause reversal of face air and consequent mine explosion as gas laden air is drawn across a fire. A third examines inertisation and dilution issues in mains headings. mains headings present a complex ventilation network with often numerous parallel headings, hundreds of cut-throughs and a variety of ventilation control devices. In such a complex system (with additional interference from a fire), maintaining control of the movement of inert gas is more difficult than elsewhere in the mine. Some illustrations of this issue are given.

How do you portray a large structurally and stratigraphically complex deposit to return a meaningful resource estimation, and produce a geological model that is useable for planning on a daily basis? The George Fisher Mine is located 22 km north of Mount Isa and forms part of XstrataÆs Zinc Group operations. It is currently a major producer of zinc, lead and silver in the region with an estimated total resource for all categories of 127 Mt at 100g/t Ag, 5.3 per cent Pb and 9.2 per cent Zn (June 2005). Production in 2005 totalled 2 647 492 wet tonnes for 317 699 kg Ag, 140 317 tonnes Pb and 230 331 tonnes Zn from underground operations. George Fisher (GF) consists of two deposits that are structurally complex on a mine scale, George Fisher North (GFN) and George Fisher South (GFS). Regional faulting has resulted in a 2 km long package of variably pyritic shale and siltstone that separates the deposits. This paper looks specifically at GFN. Distinct correlations exist between the two deposits based on stratigraphic matches; however, orebody characteristics, geometry and fault architectures differ significantly between the two. The deposits consist of multiple, sedimentary-hosted, stratiform orebodies from 2 to 25 m wide, separated by waste intervals of variable width. Each ore-waste interval is modelled as an individual geological domain. Structurally, George Fisher North (GFN) contains a series of major late-stage NE faults with dextral offset(s) of up to 130 m. Further complexity is added by NS, NW and NNE striking fault orientations that can produce either a loss or repeat of stratigraphy, local drag folding, orebody attenuation and block rotation. Due to this structural complexity and orebody offsets, domains at GFN are further divided into fault blocks (FB). The GFN model comprises eight FBs over a strike length of 1 km, all of which are modelled independently. As drilling progresses and additional resources are converted, further FBs will be added at major fault offsets to accommodate orebody and model expansion. This will be in addition to what is already a large and time-consuming data set to manage and update. For example, each FB has 18 domains each with two constraining wireframes (hanging wall and footwall). Each wireframe has several sets of point data depending on the type of data available, ie diamond drilling, mapping or interpretation points. This equates to over 1100 separate files to manage. Additional wireframes and files are also required for major structures, daily planning requirements and block model runs. In total some 1500 files are managed, updated and maintained for GFN alone. The ongoing need to expand as a business and optimise production in the current economic climate where there is a global demand for metal has led to an increase in production at GF. This has resulted in a rapidly growing data set and highlights the importance of practical and efficient modelling to achieve a meaningful resource estimate. This paper focuses on the geological modelling, modelling approaches and techniques employed for the GFN deposit.

Addressing nutrient deficiency, among other factors, is vital to the growth and establishment of plants in mine spoils and tailings ponds. Although several organic amendments are available for this purpose, it is important to determine the appropriate ameliorant for the selected plant species. This research examined the effect of different amendments on the growth and ground cover of Centrosema molle, Calopogonium mucunoides and Sorghum spp. in copper/gold tailings. Plant growth and ground cover drastically increased with the application of organic ameliorants, especially manure. Among the three plants, Calopogonium exhibited the best growth and has shown its capability to establish a dense ground cover even in unamended tailings. Results suggest that the plant species and the ameliorants used in this study could be effective in a low-input approach to mine rehabilitation.CITATION:Domingo, J P T and David, C P C, 2014. The EPA National Risk Management Research Laboratory (NRMRL) Mine Waste Technology Program (MWTP) and the EPA Region VIII Superfund office are jointly conducting a field-scale technology demonstration of a two-step in situ treatment of the acidic Anchor Hill Pit lake at the Gilt Edge Mine Superfund site near Deadwood, South Dakota, USA. The project goal is to develop cost and performance data for the in situ treatment for potential application in long-term water treatment/management activities at the Gilt Edge site, and for potential application at other similar sites. Lime neutralisation of the pit using a Neutra-Mill was accomplished in the spring of 2001, with a resultant lime utilisation efficiency of about 71 per cent, and a typical throughput of about 1 tonne per hour using coarse, pebble quicklime and 1.4 tonnes per hour using finer, ground lime. Redox-mediated biotransformation treatment of the pit has been ongoing since May 2001. As of January 2003, denitrification is complete in the near-surface waters and about 90 per cent complete in the deeper waters. Bacterial sulfate reduction is expected to begin in the near future. This paper describes project activities, results, and lessons-learned to-date as well as future monitoring plans.

The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) is a professional society for all those associated with the activities of the mineral industry. Differences of opinion exist within the membership of the AusIMM on the role it should play in the future as a professional society in a changing industry and world environment. This same dilemma is concerning other professional societies of which the author is a member. Some of the activities and priorities of the AusIMM are reviewed in order to clarify a frequently expressed opinion that it identifies with and supports industry at the expense of representing the interests of its individual members. By definition and by action this is certainly not the case and it is concluded that all activities whether seen to be industry or member orientated serve to benefit both. The AusIMM plays a most important role in integrating and promoting the interests of all sections of the mineral industry whether corporate or individual and the Presidential activities in education this year provide an excellent example of this.

The Ernest Henry Mine is currently a copper-gold open pit operation situated in north-west Queensland, Australia. It is owned and operated by Xstrata Copper with a current throughput of 11 million tonnes per annum; however, open pit operations are scheduled to cease in late 2011. The deposit dips at approximately 45¦ and extends for at least another 400 vertical metres below the final 530 m deep pit design. Resource drilling from 2002 until mid 2008 has enabled an Indicated Mineral Resource to be established to 1000 m below surface. Scoping and prefeasibility studies (PFS) have been completed toward determining if this resource is suitable for underground mining and a feasibility study is currently progressing with a sublevel caving (SLC) concept. This paper briefly describes the process by which the SLC method was selected, conclusions regarding the non-selected methods, and then discusses the optimisation process used to derive the mining plan. The key optimisation parameters include the production drive spacing, level spacing, draw strategy, cut-off grade and production rate. Key risks will then be assessed and economic sensitivities studied. Final sensitivities will use Monte Carlo simulations to improve the transparency of the projectÆs risk profile. The feasibility study (FS) began in March 2008 and this paper describes the main optimisation steps at the time of writing and outlines the plan for study completion through to March 2009.

Alcoa operates two bauxite mines at Huntly and Willowdale, located within the jarrah forest south-east of Perth in Western Australia. Ore reserves are shallow but extensive, and mining pits averaging around 20 ha in size are distributed across a mining region in a mosaic pattern, linked to a centrally-located crusher by a radiating network of haulroads. A mining or crusher region is defined partly in terms of economic haul distances, and new regions are opened once the current regions’ reserves have been mined. Since commencing in 1973, the Huntly mine has constructed and progressively closed three previous mining regions and is presently in a transition from the fourth and current region of McCoy to the new region of Myara. At present rates of production, approximately 450 ha is cleared, mined and rehabilitated each year.The value of topsoil in returning a diverse mix of native jarrah forest plant species and supplying nutrients, organic matter and soil biota to rehabilitated areas has long been recognised. Managing the topsoil resource is therefore a critical element in the success of rehabilitation outcomes, but the distribution and dynamic nature of mining operations pose significant planning and logistical challenges. The regionalised approach to mining at Huntly also presents a range of issues for what are, in effect, soil management plans for episodic mine closure. The nature of mining and rehabilitation operations are described, together with the planning processes that Alcoa follows to quantify, track and report on soil movement. A case study of the Huntly mine demonstrates that an integrated operational and life-of-mine planning process is essential for successful and cost-effective mine rehabilitation.CITATION:Hackett, L and Grigg, A, 2014. An integrated and dynamic water balance and water quality model for a proposed base metal mine has been created using the GoldSimÖ software package. The model was initially developed to address the water quality of the Tailings Management Facility pond and how pond discharge would potentially affect downstream water quality. However, due to changing project objectives, the modelling has expanded over time through an iterative process to encompass the full mine site and all receiving environment water quality. The model results have been used as part of the mine planning/design process but are also intended to be used for the environmental impact assessment and permitting process. The model has been built to allow for changes to input terms to be readily made as additional data becomes available. The model results serve as a prediction of water quality and the potential project impacts to the receiving environment water quality. This paper presents the process by which data from a wide variety of sources was used to construct the model and how the model results were used to guide development of a conceptual water management plan. In addition, the role of the model in establishing proposed discharge criteria will be highlighted. The model has been delivered as a fully functional application with the intent that the end-user can be other than the modeller, the development of this aspect shall also be covered. Even though most major operating companies in the minerals industry have Board-level endorsed sustainability principles and objectives, design engineers typically have no mechanism that allows them to implement those objectives in their work. In addition, the existing project management systems do not readily deliver the innovative solutions needed to address key sustainability issues, such as those related to significantly reduced carbon emissions, minimal environmental impacts, and maintaining the societal ‘licence to operate’. SUSOP® (SUStainable OPerations) is an approach for the integration of sustainable development principles into the design of mineral processes, which has been developed through the Co-operative Research Centre for Sustainable Resource Processing (CSRP). Somewhat analogous to the well entrenched HAZOP (Hazard and Operability) studies, SUSOP® is a holistic, systematic and rigorous mechanism for identifying and assessing sustainability opportunities and risks at each stage of project development - from corporate planning, through design and operation, to decommissioning and rehabilitation – without compromising financial rigour. SUSOP® was developed, tested and enhanced through its application to real case studies in the minerals industry. This development path provided significant insights into the process of identifying and evaluating opportunities for improving an operation’s contribution to sustainability and its long-term business case.This paper will discuss the need for a methodical approach for integrating sustainability principles into mineral processing plant design, present the key elements of SUSOP®, and outline its development path through real case studies. In addition, the reasons why such an approach will have growing importance into the future will be raised.
