Morning Star Gold aims to enter the ranks of Australia's gold producers, revitalising the Eastern Victorian Goldfi elds in the second half of 2010 - the fi rst gold production in around 50 years from the Morning Star Gold mine, which was once Australia's largest under WMC. This presentation will outline the redevelopment of the Morning Star Gold Mine from exploration to production. Morning Star Gold NL's (MCO) key project area is centred at the historic mining town of Woods Point and nearby Matlock (to the southeast) and Gaffney's Creek (to the northwest), all of which are located in the lower part of the Victorian Alps roughly 60 kms south of Mansfield. Morning Star has literally numerous historic mines and gold bearing 'dykes' on its tenements, many with a rich production history of high-grade gold from quartz reefs and alluvial sources. The area encompassing the Woods Point goldfi eld and the multiple high-grade gold bearing dyke structures located north towards Jamieson and south towards Walhalla formed one of the most significant mining fields in Australian history. Historical gold production was at least 155 t or around six million ounces of over a century of mining with an average production grade exceeding 27 g per tonne. The bulk of this recorded production came from just a handful of mines and of those only three were mined to any great depth. One of the key historical production hubs in this area was the famous 'Morning Star' mine, which is situated adjacent to Woods Point township. The Morning Star mine produced almost one million ounces at 27 grams per tonne, operating fairly continuously between 1861 and 1959 with a break after Jan 1939 due to the devastating 'Black Friday' bush fi res across eastern Victoria. During the early 1940s, the Morning Star was Australia's biggest gold mine. The Morning Star mine along with Walhalla ensured that this goldfield was third behind Bendigo and Ballarat as Victoria's biggest hardrock gold production centre. Morning Star Gold has rebuilt its 100 per cent owned 'Morning Star' mine with a view to producing gold in the second half of 2010. Morning Star is exploring its regional dykes in order to estimate an overall gold endowment and rank local production sources to feed its proposed mill at the Morning Star mine site. Key initial targets (all within 11 kms of the Morning Star mine) are the Waverly, All Nations, Rose of Denmark, Hunts, Wallaby and Loch Fyne dykes, all of which historically produced high grade gold, much of it gained from only shallow workings above the water table in the weathered zone of rocks. Historically the Morning Star mine was developed over 24 levels to a depth of 940 m via one large vertical shaft and a smaller, deeper inclined shaft at the 1900 feet level underground. At present MCO has dewatered and completely refurbished all infrastructure to the ten level (~310 m below surface). MCO knows there are a number of substantially under-explored and undeveloped or partially developed but not stoped areas within the Morning Star mine. As a result, MCO has been carrying out extensive channel sampling and an underground diamond drilling program targeting areas of the mine that were largely unexplored and undeveloped by the last operators of the mine - Western Mining Corp Ltd (Gold Mines of Australia). Four thousand, fi ve hundred pages of archival WMC records have helped the cause significantly. The shaft refurbishment and reconstruction stage is complete. This has been a program that originally commenced back in 1993 and has cost around $22 M. This refurbishment paved the way for the extensive underground resource focused diamond drilling program, which MCO completed in 2008 with two company-owned and operated drill rigs from drill cuddies on level 9 (900 feet underground) of the mine. This drilling, which encountered some stunning grades intersections and multiple visible gold hits, has outlined further production opportunities including 0.4 m @ 1392 g/t Au (MS 410). Metallurgical testing conducted by Gekko Systems of samples obtained from the exploration program found gravity concentration and a leach circuit gave recoveries of ~95 per cent to 99 per cent, or ~92 per cent from gravity alone at a coarse crush (300 ¦m). Currently, the plan is to use gravity to fi rstly produce dore bars on-site from the free milling gold and secondly a saleable concentrate for CIL processing off-site. A purpose built 10 t/h (~80 000 t/a) gravity treatment plant was subsequently ordered from Gekko and is expected to be installed onsite and commissioned in the Q3 2010. The plant features fi ne crushing with a vertical shaft impactor, followed by gold concentration by inline pressure jig, inline spinner and Wilfley table. This is an ABSTRACT ONLY. The application of the hydraulic fracturing technique to the measurement of in situ rock stress from underground excavation is discussed; including relevant theoretical considerations, equipmenl details, experimental technique and analysis procedures. Examples of the application of the technique at three Australian coal and metalliferous mining operations are given. The results obtained from these applications are compared with corresponding results obtained from overcoring tests conducted in close proximity at each site. Generally good correspondence in a wide variety of rock types is indicated. Experience gained with hydraulic fracturing at several underground mining sites has indicated it to be a quick, cost effective means of gaining an understanding of the in situ stress field in sufficient detail for many mine planning functions.

The Kucing Liar skarn deposit is located in the Ertsberg mining district, which also contains other skarn deposits and the Grasberg porphyry copper û gold deposit. The Ertsberg district is located in the province of Irian Jaya, IndonesiaÆs easternmost province. Mining development began in the Ertsberg district in 1972 with the mining of the Ertsberg deposit. Daily production in the district now averages about 230 000 tonnes of ore, with the bulk of the ore coming from the Grasberg open pit and the balance from underground mining of skarn deposits. During 1998, 45 218 additional metres of drilling were conducted to delineate and understand the Kucing Liar orebody. The deposit was first intersected in drill holes in 1994 and then was intersected in underground workings located about 1000 metres from the discovery drill hole in 1995. Initially, the two intersections were thought to be different orebodies but are now realised to be different parts of the same orebody. The Kucing Liar deposit consists of magnetite û copper û gold replacement and skarn mineralisation in favorable Tertiary and Cretaceous units. The deposit is approximately 2000 metres in length and averages about 200 to 250 metres in thickness. The width varies from 400 to 600 metres. Drilling in 1998 was directed towards delineating the deposit on its NW and SE ends and to determine its down dip extension. Reserves for the deposit at the end of 1998 stand at 320 million tonnes at 1.4 per cent copper, 1.4 g/t gold, and 5.3 g/t silver. Many important questions remain to be answered concerning the relationship of the Kucing Liar orebody to the major faults in the district and to the Grasberg intrusive complex which contains the Grasberg orebody. Continued exciting developments are anticipated as work to understand the deposit by drilling and geologic study continues.

The Wangaloa coal mine closed in 1989, and an attempt to grow Pinus radiata on quartz-rich overburden dumps was not successful. The site is currently being rehabilitated with re-profiling and native plant establishment. Plants are being established in a range of substrates that consist of variably disaggregated Tertiary coal measure sediments derived from the mine sequence. This material has low organic matter content (typically <10 %), originating from coal fines or carbonaceous sediment. Substrate samples were collected during December 2003 from a range of sites varying in age, slope, and parent material. Nutrient analysis includes nitrate, ammonia, total N, total P, available P and readily exchangeable base cations. Total nitrogen and phosphorus are low on areas of recently disturbed, quartz-rich overburden, with total N =1200 mg/kg, and total P =200 mg/kg. Background forested areas have total N ranging between 2800 - 3300 mg/kg and total P of 420 - 500 mg/kg. Quartz-rich overburden sites contain available nitrogen levels of less than 6 mg/kg, while background forested areas are generally >20 mg/kg. The soils and water runoff are generally acid, with pH down to three. Water samples have been collected from both ground and surface resources on a monthly basis since December 2003. The main lake on the site had pH of 4.6 in 1999, and this remained relatively unchanged when 850 tonnes of lime were added in 2002. However, the lake pH changed to 6.4 within a one month period in 2004, and has fluctuated since that time.

The building is a lofty, well-ventilated one of hardwood frame, with galvanized-iron walls and roof, and consists of five spans running north and south, covering a total length of 236 ft. Each span is composed of nine bays of 1:3-ft. centres, making the total width of the building 117 ft. The refinery is situated conveniently at a distance of 100 yds from the smelters. Through the third span of the building runs a 5-ton electric overhead travelling crane, of a 3-motor type, with a span of 29 ft. The crane runway extends over a railway line, which connects the smelters to the refinery. This crane is llsed for handling bullion, coal, melting kettles, lead pumps, &c. A 3-ton crane of similar type, but with a 50-ft. span, runs through the fifth span of the building and also extends over the railwav line alreadv mentioned. This crane is used to load the soft lead into railway trucks, or to stack lead awaiting shipment in the area covered by the crane's operations.

In late 2014 the Flinders Power Management Team was executing business improvement plans to ensure continued electricity generation until 2028 and beyond. Six months later, in June 2015, the Board announced the closure of the Flinders Power South Australian business, including the Leigh Creek Coal Mine, the Northern and Playford Power Stations located at Port Augusta and the 250km railway line. The announcement was preceded by a brief period of internal planning. A date was soon set for ceasing coal mining operations, being November 2015. The mine is unique in many ways. Located approximately 550km north of Adelaide the site has over 100 years of history and was formerly operated by the South Australian Government. Privatisation in 2000 saw the mine continue operation under Perpetual Leases from the South Australian Government. The leases included exemptions from multiple sections of the Mining Act 1971, obliging primary regulation under the Mines and Works Inspection Act 1920. The coal, being a low rank sub-bituminous brown coal, is prone to self-heating and spontaneous combustion. The mine and company town Leigh Creek were the economic and cultural heartbeat of the community. Facilities at the mine were shared by the community and vice versa. While many mines across Australia and the world enter periods of care and maintenance, few have been actively closed to the point of relinquishment (Bennett and Lacy, 2016). A swift decision to close, followed by a short mining operations shutdown period, presented significant technical and regulatory challenges for both the mine operator and for Regulators. The subsequent joint risk mapping process employed by Flinders Power and South Australian Mining Regulators was a unique real-world example of collaborative mine closure planning and execution. Two key elements in the design of a pastefill or high density backfill system are the preparation of the backfill material and its distribution underground. This paper examines these two areas. Owing to the essentially impervious nature of total mill tailings, preparation of pastefill and high density fill from current tailings involves a physical dewatering process. There are currently three methods available for this process: Vacuum or pressure filters. These represent the ætraditionalÆ approach to the preparation of pastefill. Paste production storage mechanism. This is a thickening/storage mechanism developed with the specific objective of producingpaste/high density backfills. Fluidization. This system utilises silos fitted with simple dewatering devices and nozzles. Recently developed by CANMET, it provides the simplest and most economical approach.This paper describes and compares the three preparation methods, from a practical and an economic point of view. Once the pastefill/high density fill has been prepared and binder added, the backfill must be distributed underground into the stopes. A fundamental factor in the design of a distribution system is the rheology of the material. No two materials will exhibit the same properties, and a sequence of rheological and related testing is required prior to the completion of the design of the underground distribution system. This paper covers the testwork normally required and discusses the fundamental design parameters of pastefill distribution systems. The final section of this paper summarises the use of pastefill at three mines in Canada.

The decline of ore grades on land, increasing demand and high prices for various minerals have led to an increased interest in mining the deep ocean sea floor. The potential deep ocean reserves are vast and in some circumstances the grades are high enough to consider mining. However, the consequences of such mining are as yet uncertain. This paper will present the results of a comparative assessment of life cycle impacts of deep ocean minerals. Two alternative extraction technologies from different deep ocean resource types were examined and key commodities are considered. Initial results indicate that the energy requirements will be higher than the average land-based resources, but may fall within the range of the deepest terrestrial mines.CITATION:McLellan, B C, 2015. A mine waste dump progression plan can provide a clear outlook of the mining operation. To produce such an output requires detailed placement schedule of the mined material, including the volume (or tonnage) and the allocated dumping location. However, current practise mainly focuses on the ore production, over-simplifying the waste material scheduling. As a result, a rock dump is often treated as a single point in long-term planning, making it difficult to predict the waste dump progression pattern over the life-of-mine. Without such a guidance, it is almost impossible to carry out progressive rehabilitation on the waste rock dumps. The lack of dumping schedule could cause delay in development construction, ie tailing storage facility and run-of-mine pad. Other downstream effect due to the over-simplification is inaccurate estimation of required truck hours, which could have huge financial impact on the operation.In this paper, mixed integer programming (MIP) models of different objective functions, ie maximise truck productivity by minimising the overall haulage distance, minimise required truck deviation between adjacent years, and a hybrid between the two objectives, are utilised to generate the long-term optimum rock placement schedules under the criteria of satisfying site specific conditions. All three MIP models are implemented in a large scale open pit mine. The numerical solutions from the models forms three different rock placement schedules, based on which, the yearly truck requirements are easily calculated and compared. The graphical results show the three corresponding waste dump progression patterns over the life-of-mine, providing the optimised long-term forecast of the operation.CITATION:Li, Y, Topal, E and Ramazan, S, 2014. Resolution Copper Mining LLC (RCML) is one of the largest undeveloped high-grade porphyry copper-molybdenum deposits in the world, with an orebody at depths of approximately 2000 m beneath post-mineralisation cover. With a vision to develop a large-scale, low-cost operating mine, the project is designed as a micropanel cave with an advanced undercut.In September 2014, RCML began a study focusing on identifying and selecting the best production cases to eventually reach full production (120 kt/d). To achieve this, a methodology was developed that allows the fast evaluation of a large number of production schedules.Dassault Systèmes GEOVIA was commissioned to enhance the Footprint Finder program for batch scheduling panel cave production. The tonnage and grade schedules produced by Footprint Finder were compared to schedules developed using personal computing block caving (PCBC™). The inputs to Footprint Finder were then adjusted to achieve a reasonable correlation with the PCBC™ schedules.The enhanced Footprint Finder program was used to batch-process nearly 54 000 schedules using 20 elevations, 17 shutoff grades, four heights of draw, two different copper grades (modelled and upside), two layout refinements within the existing footprint and a variety of production ramp-up rates to 120 kt/d. The study team developed processes to analyse large amounts of data, to assist in selecting a matrix of the best schedules for detailed assessment using PCBC™. Three hundred PCBC™ schedules were developed.The detailed trade-offs between the scenarios is currently underway with promising results. While coal seam gas is considered to be an unconventional gas, the proliferation of areas under exploration and development mean that it is rapidly becoming main stream. The potential of New Zealand's coals to produce coal seam gas has been recognised for some time. However, key market drivers have not been suitable for the progression of this potential into reality. Kenham Holdings Ltd and CRL Energy Ltd, recognising the potential for the gas in New Zealand have initiated what is the largest ever assessment of New Zealand's coal seam gas potential. The premature demise of the giant Maui field has raised the focus of new gas developments and has increased interest in what we are doing. Over the past couple of years Kenham Holdings Ltd and CRL Energy Ltd have approached the assessment of the coal seam gas potential in a staged programme. Preliminary assessment of the data on the permit areas indicates that the potential resource may be up to 500 PJ. To date, preliminary appraisals have been completed or are underway on a significant number of fields. Exploratory drilling has been completed or initiated on several of those fields, with results from this work being fed into the preliminary modelling as it has become available. Given that in many of these areas there is no pre-existing information concerning their gas potential and world wide experience with lignite is practically nonexistent, it has been a steep learning curve with many surprises. However, initial gas content results and preliminary gas flow models have been on the whole, rather pleasing, with the commerciality of some developments already apparent.

Steelmaking slags are usually used as roadbed and civil engineering materials. However, the expansion phenomenon, which is caused by the volume expansion during hydration of free CaO and free MgO contained in steelmaking slag, is indispensable. Since the hydration of free MgO in steelmaking slag is much slower than that of free CaO, it is qualitatively considered that free MgO contributes to the hydration expansion of steelmaking slag over a long period of time. Similar to free CaO, free MgO consists of undissolved MgO and crystallised MgO in steelmaking slag. The latter precipitates during slag cooling. When divalent metal oxides (FeO, MnO, CaO) are dissolved in the crystallised MgO to form a MgO-based solid solution, it is expected to inhibit the hydration reaction similar to precipitated CaO. From the previous hydration test of Magnesioferrite, which was calcined after mixing MgO and Fe2O3 reagents, it was found that the higher the Fe2O3 concentration, the slower the hydration reaction progressed. In this study, by clarifying the influence of calcination conditions of MgO-FeO and MgO-FeO-MnO solid solutions, which were prepared by the calcination of mixture of MgO, FeO and MnO reagents, on their hydration reactivity, the effect of composition and thermal treatment on the formation of free MgO that is not hydrated (or easily hydrated) were discussed. To investigate the influence of MgO grain size, coarse MgO particles, which were obtained by crushing MgO crucible, were also used for heat treatment. With increasing the amount of FeO and MnO in the MgO-FeO-MnO solid solution, the hydration reaction became more suppressed. The expansion suppression effect was higher with solid-solved FeO than with solidsolved MnO. When the calcination temperature of the MgO-FeO solid solution was increased, the Fe3+/Fe2+ concentration ratio increased, resulting in a higher hydration rate.

The Tui mine site is situated on the NW flank of Mt. Te Aroha, at approximately 400 m altitude. During underground mining operations two lead-copper-zinc ore bodies were exploited and processed on site. The legacy of the mining operation is a barren dam containing over 100,000 m3 of sulphide-rich tailings. The Tui mine site is arguably the worst case of environmental degradation resulting from past mining activity in New Zealand. Although the impacted area (approximately 4 ha) is extremely small by international standards, acid mine drainage (AMD) emanating from the abandoned tailings dam and mine adits has severely contaminated local streams and prevented natural plant recolonisation of the site for more than 20 years.

The Grasberg is a large copper and gold open pit mine operated by PT Freeport Indonesia and located in the high equatorial mountains of Papua Province, Indonesia. The climate is alpine/sub-alpine with little seasonal variation in temperature and rainfall. The annual precipitation varies from about 3000 to 5000 mm over short distances around the Grasberg, but in general, an average daily precipitation of 10 mm per day applies and leaching of the overburden is continuous throughout the year. Mining commenced in 1988, and almost all of the overburden mined up to 2003 was potentially acid forming. From 2003 to the end of the Grasberg pit operation in 2014, approximately 70 per cent of the overburden will be potentially acid forming and 30 per cent limestone. A major focus of the investigations is developing strategies to maximise the beneficial use of the limestone that will be mined. Laboratory columns and field test pad investigations have been ongoing for six years examining limestone blends. Trial dumps utilising truck placement and conveyor/stacker placement and blending of limestone and acid generating rock have recently been constructed. In addition, based on initial results, investigations aimed at further evaluating the performance of limestone covers in this high rainfall environment have commenced. A significant finding has been the identification of strong armouring layers on sulfide surfaces within well-blended material and under limestone covers. These layers effectively isolate sulfides and thus progressively slow the oxidation rate to a level where the alkalinity load from the limestone exceeds the rate of acid generating. ARD is controlled and neutral low metal drainage results. The results have demonstrated that although limestone blending is effective, it is necessary to ensure that all size fractions within the blend receive adequate acid neutralising capacity to buffer the potential acidity. Because the sulfur content generally increases and the acid neutralising capacity decreases with decreasing particle size in limestone blends, the amount of limestone required greatly exceeds the stoichiometric requirement. This paper describes the development of limestone blending specifications for potentially acid forming overburden and presents the results of the ongoing limestone cover trials at the Grasberg mine.

Two commercially available through-the-Earth (TTE) communications systems were evaluated at an active underground longwall mine in West Virginia. One system utilises magnetic field (H-field) antennae while the other system utilises electric field (E-field) antennae to achieve communication. A large portion of this mine is overlain by an inactive gas-oil field composed of densely spaced wells. This feature provided a unique opportunity to determine the impact of cased wells on both TTE technologies. The following communication modes were investigated: surface to underground, underground to surface, underground to underground and real-time two-way communications. Standard deployments of the TTE systems using the manufacturer’s recommended procedures were able to achieve clear communications between underground and surface locations under certain circumstances. As a result, the design and deployment that will optimise TTE transmissions are unique to each system and to the specific area of the mine. This field study was conducted as a part of a larger multisite evaluation of available TTE systems in an effort to determine their operational sensitivity. Mechanically coupled rock bolts encapsulated in cementitious or polyester cartridge resin grouts have been widely adopted for various underground rock reinforcement applications. Resin grouts are considered a superior product, however, both systems have their advantages and limitations, with the relative performance, quality installation cost and cycle time as the most notable parameters. Both applications have optimal rock bolt combinations and preferred ground conditions. Cementitious grouts are favourable for use with secondary deep embedment anchors. These are installed using various equipment with a series of autonomous tasks required to complete the installation cycle. The cartridge resin system can be utilised by a bolting or face boring rock drill to complete the full support installation cycle. This reduction in equipment changeouts mid-cycle generally deems it the more practical application and popular choice for primary support. Self-drilling anchors (SDAs) and hollow bolts have been a viable alternative to traditional rock reinforcement in variable and challenging ground conditions. Using a pumpable post installation grouting system, SDAs have proven to aid the quality of installation, but due to the additional equipment and cycle steps associated with application, the cycle time is increased. In recent years, fully mechanised bolting equipment designed to utilise a combination of self-drilling anchors and a thixotropic pumpable resin installed in a single pass has entered the market. This innovation is anticipated to deliver the advantages described above, with fewer limitations, and significantly improved development and rehabilitation rates. St Barbara Mining and Byrnecut Australia, supported by Master Builders Solutions, were first to conduct extensive trials and implement this rock bolting approach in an Australian hard rock underground mine and record the actual performance.

Because the environmental problems are occurred by greenhouse gases such as CO2, the industries have tried to increase electric motor efficiency to reduce CO2 emissions. A core material of electric motor is high-silicon electrical steel. The ferrosilicon (FeSi) alloy, a raw material for the production of electrical steel, affects the electric properties of silicon steel. The main impurities such as Ca, Al and Ti make inclusions or precipitates that causes core loss. The slag treatment has been widely used to remove impurity elements. Thermodynamic principles for the refining of several impurities, specifically Ca and Al, have been investigated, whereas thermodynamic behaviour of Ti has not been fully understood yet. Therefore, in the present study, the titanium distribution ratio () between ferrosilicon and CaO-SiO2-Al2O3 slag system at 1773 K was investigated. The results show that is influenced by both the basicity and stability of titanium ion in the slag. Specifically, exhibits a minimum value at about C/S=0.7 indicating a shift in the titanate structure unit from [TiO5]-square pyramid to [TiO4]-tetrahedron because of lack of Ca2+ ions in a C/S<0.8 region, contributing to an increase in titanate capacity and .

Imaging sensor systems designed for the mining and minerals industry incorporate different physical measurement technologies that can be used to detect the machine environment, such as laser, ultrasonic/sonar, video and RF-sensors. The underlying physical measurement principles cannot be employed in most applications near the face without regular maintenance due to the harsh environmental conditions like dust, dirt or moisture. However, that is the area, where imaging sensors are most valuable to the machine operator. In the domain of 2D radar sensors these have been either restricted by the angular coverage area or by limited adaptability of signal processing algorithms. The unique full digital solid state design will establish a generation step in mining applications.In order to fill this gap of terrain imaging sensors, the Institute for Mining and Metallurgy Machinery (IMR) of the RWTH Aachen University, in cooperation with the radar company indurad, developed an imaging sensor based on radar technology employing the digital beam forming (DBF) concept. Through multiple transmitting and receiving antennas the sensor delivers high accuracy range and angular information. Using adaptive digital signal processing with multiple imaging algorithms and target detection routines, data of the surrounding environment can be used to enable automation functions in mining.A comprehensive range of radar scans in different environments have been evaluated and benchmarked by using laser scanners. Accuracy measurements in range and angular direction have shown minimal differences. Experimental measurements have been performed at slopes, on conveyor belts and hot cement clinker silos. The experimental system uses a frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) front-end combined with a processing unit for signal analysis and target detection.

The Adelaide Desalination Plant (ADP) draws raw sea water into the facility and returns saline concentrate to the Gulf St Vincent via subsea conduits. This paper describes the detailed design and construction methodologies developed for the cross connection tunnel excavation. The paper concentrates on key design elements which include:· lateral breakout support of the segmental tunnel lining,· ground improvement grouting in the zone of the cross connection tunnels due to extremely variable and weak ground conditions, and· excavation methodologies and proposed support types of the riser to tunnel cross connections.The design process consisted of developing concepts, detailed risk assessment, three-dimensional (3D) finite element modelling and structural analysis for temporary support of tunnel lining; functional design of the ground improvement grouting and the temporary support; and permanent lining design of tunnel to ocean riser connections in a mixed soft ground/hard rock environment.The paper also presents conclusions of the design based on construction data available, and highlights the close collaboration between the design team and construction team.

For any gold deposit-based geometallurgical study, the collection and processing of representative samples for gold grade and recovery tests is critical. Sampling protocols should be designed to suit the style of orebody in question. The proportion and size of gold particles has a direct impact on the effectiveness of sampling protocols and metallurgical recovery processes employed. Studies focussing on ore mineralogy and gold particle deportment, size and distribution are required. Key issues are the presence of gold particle clustering (important for sampling optimisation) and proportion of coarse versus fine to refractory gold. X-ray computed tomography (CT) is a radiographic technique that produces high-resolution 3D computerised models of objects based on density distribution. The ‘virtual’ specimens are made up of voxels, the 3D equivalent of pixels each assigned a grey value based on X-ray absorption. This paper presents the results of recent research on the imaging of in situ gold particles in a coarse gold-bearing ore. The technique shows promise as a rapid non-destructive method for preliminary characterisation to facilitate more detailed studies. Early and rapid gold particle determination enables sampling protocol optimisation and metallurgical recovery parameters to be defined prior to detailed feasibility studies
