Charcoal produced from Syzygium Zeylanicum trees was widely used in ancient Sri Lankan iron smelting practices. Charcoal made from Syzygium Zeylanicum tree trunks, branches and leaves were analysed by optical mineralogy and SEM and found to contain unusually high concentrations of calcium oxalate (CaC2O4.H2O – CaOx) crystals in plant cells. Partial and full reduction tests of a high-P Brockman ore were conducted at several temperatures with coke and coke doped with CaOx and CaCO3. It was observed that CaOx promoted reduction and generated comparatively more metallic iron in reduced samples. Furthermore, CaOx encouraged phosphorous partition into slag phases than into the metallic iron, suggesting CaOx can a potential alternative fluxing material to calcium carbonate for treating high-P iron ores in ironmaking processes.

This paper presents an overview of a program PC-BC developed for application to the design and evaluation of block cave operations. Conventional mine planning software tools are not well suited to the evaluation of this type of deposit. The paper looks at the modelling approach as applied to a block cave mining project. The following steps are described:Initial preparation of data including block models, draw point footprint geometry and draw cone geometry. Computation of individual draw point reserves. Procedure for modelling of vertical mixing of material within each draw point and subsequent determination of the best height of draw for each draw point based upon an economic cut-off value. Smoothing of draw heights amongst neighbouring draw points to produce a realistic draw envelope. Mineable reserves within the envelope are then computed. Tools for preparation and evaluation of various production schedules. This includes definition of draw rates, and rates for commissioning new draw points. In an operating mine, the capture and analysis of daily draw tonnages is important. How PC-BC accommodates this is described as well as the processes for depleting the draw column reserves. In the 12 years since the program was first developed, it has been used on a number of projects for feasibility studies and operating mines. Some practical examples of the use of the program in these projects are presented. Finally, some commentary on the sensitivity of various parameters is presented. Particular emphasis is placed on the overall footprint design.

Conventional industry tests used to determine leach recoveries are often fully monitored and may be time-consuming and expensive. Such tests may be limiting in geometallurgical applications where large numbers of samples are required to be processed for characterisation of an ore deposit. BHP Billiton currently use a fully instrumented leach test for characterisation of Olympic Dam uranium-rich samples. Researchers at the Commonwealth Scientific Research and Industrial Organisation (CSIRO) were approached to develop an alternative to these full-scale leach tests that could allow for the ranking of samples in terms of their leachability. The novel geometallurgical test was required to use samples of small mass and be affordable and rapid.Three leach test protocols were pursued in developing the small-scale tests. Kinetic leach tests were performed using mild conditions at higher pH, low temperature and low oxidation reduction potential, moderate conditions at intermediate pH, temperature and oxidation reduction potential and aggressive conditions at lower pH, higher temperature and higher reduction potential.This paper presents results from 44 leach tests on 11 samples with varying uranium mineralogy. The developed small-scale tests correlate well with data from the more costly conventional industry laboratory tests, indicating the possibility of using this alternative test as a geometallurgical leach proxy. Simple regression analysis confirmed the importance of pH, reduction potential and temperature on uranium extraction. This paper describes results from a gender study for a new mine in Pajala, a small community in northern Sweden. Using a gender perspective, the study examines migration, education, local culture, the labour market, and work organisation as problems and opportunities in the regional context for the planned mine. The most obvious ‘gender issue’ for the Swedish mining industry is the very low percentage of employed women, which is even lower among mining workers. To recruit the best people, a company actively needs to attract both women and men; however, the mining companies find it difficult to recruit women as cultural, labour market and educational traditions as well as the mining companies’ own cultures often make it difficult for women to find work in the mining industry.The Torneå river valley, the region surrounding Pajala, has a gender-segregated labour market and gender-stereotyped culture and few young women live in this traditional and oldish region. Many young people leave the region and this is especially true for women. Compared to the rest of Sweden, there is a low educational level, especially among the men. In the mining companies, as in many other male homosocial workplaces, the workplace culture has strong connections to a certain type of traditional masculinity (laddishness, a kind of ‘macho-style’) and for a long time this has excluded women. ‘Gender’, however, is not only a question of recruiting women to a male-dominated industry. An organisation that discriminates according to gender can become inflexible, hindering communication, learning, innovations and change processes. In mining companies, this can manifest itself in hesitant attitudes among the miners about safety as well as organisational and technological development.This study found that companies establishing a presence in this region should develop a strategy for how to deal with and manage the risks and opportunities in the surrounding society (the regional culture) as well as inside the company (the mining culture). This need to be strategic will also be required of future mining companies as they will face higher demands on safety, gender equality, and technology to become modern, efficient and lean organisations.

Namakwa Sands is a mineral processing company based on the West Coast of South Africa and is solely owned by Exxaro Resources Limited. Mineral ore is mined and processed, concentrated and both chemical and mechanically upgraded before being sent for electrostatic and magnetic separation units. The final high value mineral products report as Zircon, Rutile and Ilmenite.The recovery of non-magnetic material is largely dependent upon a number of factors, including but not limited to dew point, ambient temperature, feed rate, mineral size distribution, specific gravity and mineral content in head feed. One important limiting factor to recovery in typical dry mill operations is the particle size distribution of the feed. Variance in the particle size has catastrophic consequences for recovery. This is the reason for this study. Until recently large variances in non-magnetic production were viewed to be a function of machine operation. This view was later rejected with the feed size distribution determined as the major driver of low recoveries, for Namakwa Sands orebody 50 per cent variance in particle size distribution can be noticed within one day. This is because of the successive mining blending techniques employed.The predicament is that the two modes were so closely placed together that recovery of a single mode is almost impossible without the consequence of greatly reducing recovery. The second mode was found at 125 µm while the first was at 90 µm. Interestingly, for the mentioned feed type a cumulative size distribution of a unimodal feed type is almost exactly the same as for a bimodal size distribution. Thus a plot of cumulative size distribution will show no difference due to the modes being so close together. This is the reason why this phenomenon was not noticed before.The study also found that, using an high tension roll (HTR) or rare earth roll, a fine stream with a single mode at 90 µm versus a coarse stream with a single mode at 150 µm would yield completely different results interms of yields. Larger conductive particles are thrown from the roll while small particles loose charge faster (entrainment). Results in terms of the bimodal size distribution show that even though 25 per cent of the feed type is greater than 150 µm the yields followed a similar pattern to that of the coarse particles rather than that of the majority (75 per cent) fine particles. This confirms what was published by M Ziemski and P N Holtham in 2005 on charge decay rates; they mentioned that particle bed effects played a major role in recovery.

Most preventive environmental management practices promote proactive integrated approaches to waste management. For example, life cycle assessment is often used to find the ‘hot spots’ of environmental burdens. This kind of approach is often based on generic data and has rarely been used for tailings. Besides, life cycle assessments are less useful for designing operations or simulating changes in the process and consequent environmental outcomes. It is evident that an integrated approach for tailings research linked to better processing options is needed.The aim of this Nextmine™ project is to develop new tailings management models by streamlining orebody characterisation, process optimisation and rehabilitation. We present an integrated tailings management approach and preliminary results from a case study. Combined grinding and flotation models were developed using geometallurgical data from the orebody, to predict the properties of tailings produced under various processing conditions. The modelling scenarios based on the case study data provide the capacity to predict the composition of tailings and the resulting environmental management implications. For example, the type and content of clay minerals in tailings will affect the geotechnical stability and water recovery. The influence of the insulating properties of lunar regolith was shown in the sub-surface temperature tests performed by the Apollo missions, with no significant temperature fluctuations occurring below 80 cm from the lunar surface even if surface temperatures fluctuated >200 K between lunar days and nights (Heiken et al, 1991). Key to the thermal insulation of the regolith is its low density near the surface having the greatest insulative effect with the lunar regolith becomes denser with depth. As the regolith becomes denser, the thermal conductivity of the regolith increases (Hayne et al, 2017). Thermal modelling software, Oxford 3D Thermal Model, which mapped the lunar surface temperatures effect on the thermal influence at the lunar south pole sub-surface over a lunar year found areas with brief illumination with surface temperatures >120 K could have sub-surface temperatures <112 K that can sustain long-term stable water ice at depths of <30 cm (Paige et al, 1992; King et al, 2020). Further to this, the observation of water molecules or other hydroxyls by the NASA/DLR Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) in non-permanently shadowed regions (PSRs) on the Moon, indicated that water could be present beyond PSRs (Honniball et al, 2021). Using the Oxford 3D Thermal Model in selected regions in the lunar south pole, can provide insights into the location and depth of cold traps that could sustain water ice.

Four siltite-argillite rock samples were characterised (particle size, chemistry, mineralogy) and subjected to laboratory dissolution testing for 36 to 298 weeks. In two samples sulfur (0.99, 1.69 wt per cent) occurred largely as pyrite, and in the other two samples sulfur (0.96, 1.93 wt per cent) occurred predominately as potassium jarosite. The observed rate of sulfate release from the pyritic samples was one to two orders of magnitude greater than that from samples containing potassium jarosite. Drainage pH values from the pyritic samples were one to two units lower and acidities were ten to 70 times higher than associated values from the potassium jarosite samples. Geochemical modelling supported the hypothesis that pH and concentrations of sulfate and potassium in drainage from the potassium jarosite samples were controlled by the limited solubility of potassium jarosite. This dissolution produced an iron-dominated mineral phase, but iron concentrations in the drainage were well below those predicted by ferrihydrite solubility.

Malmberget is a sublevel caving mine owned and operated by Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Aktiebolag (LKAB), a Swedish state-owned iron ore mining company, in northern Sweden. The mine has an annual iron ore production of approximately 15 Mtpa. The current strategy foresees an expansion which will increase the mine’s depth considerably. Ventilation and air conditioning modelling for the planned expansion is ongoing. One of the most influential parameters for ventilation planning anddesign for a deep mine is geothermal gradient, which is crucial for the design of the refrigeration system. It is determined through virgin rock temperature (VRT) measurements carried out at various depth below the surface. This paper details these measurements and the determination of geothermal gradient for Malmberget Mine for the expansion study, which were necessitated by thelack of information for the focus depth and area.

The spatial variability of geometallurgical characteristics in a mineral deposit can have significant impact on financial and mine planning, mineral processing, concentrate quality and tailings composition throughout the life of a project. These characteristics that may determine the success of a project are not readily apparent to geologists unless they are integrated with deposit geology and assay data, modelled in 3D and incorporated into resource block models.One of the primary objectives of geometallurgy is to integrate and incorporate various geologic, geotechnical and geometallurgical parameters into resource block models, which typically are limited to in situ tonnes and grade of economic metals. Critical attributes, such as concentration of deleterious elements that affect the project viability need to be identified and integrated into the resource block model early in the exploration stage to predict project profitability and address potential environmental impacts.Using data from a volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit we present an example of the integration of ore geochemistry (cadmium, arsenic and antimony) with the results of preliminary, bench-scale metallurgical test work in a 3D geometallurgical model that predicts subdomains of poor-quality concentrate and tailings containing environmentally-sensitive elements. This critical information was incorporated into the existing resource block model in order to inform both financial modelling and mine planning.This example demonstrates that geometallurgical data can be effectively integrated with geological and assay data using Leapfrog MiningTM software (Leapfrog Mining) early in the exploration stage of a project. Three-dimensional representations of geometallurgical data can be created directly using primary additive data, as well as from proxies of non-additive parameters. Resource block models can be updated continually with new information as the project passes from exploration through production. In addition, the software allows for 3D visualisation of the characteristics of the materials that will eventually constitute the mill concentrate, tailings, and waste. This study emphasises the critical importance of establishing a systematic geometallurgical approach early in the exploration stage that can be continuously updated with new information throughout the life of the project. In the example that we present, sulfide ore that had otherwise been identified as high-value (in the absence of geochemical and metallurgical data) turns out to be low-value ore due to concentrate penalties and increased environmental impact.

Artificial ground freezing is the unrivalled method for groundwater control during mine shaft sinking. Moreover, ground freezing may also provide temporary ground support. The fast development of fibre-optic temperature monitoring devices, three-dimensional freeze pipe survey methods and numerical modelling software provide grounds for developing new and reliable tools for ground control during freeze shaft sinking. This paper presents examples of predictive numerical models that are based on back-analysis and calibration of temperature data that covers the complete construction cycle from pre-freezing through to artificial thawing. The back-analyses showed that standard numerical models are not capable of predicting the prevailing thermo-mechanical conditions satisfactorily. This paper describes the development and implementation of new tools for improved consideration of concrete hydration and latent heat, along with the introduction of other algorithms that improve and simplify the efforts of managing complex numerical models. A function is presented that allows for an automated correction of the model’s mesh based on results of three-dimensional freeze pipe surveys. This paper demonstrates that the latter consideration is important, because the often employed assumption of idealised freeze circle geometry in numerical models impacts on the accuracy of such model’s predictions. Subsequently, the verification of these extended numerical models is demonstrated. Due to its flexibility, the FLAC3DTM code was employed for the numerical modelling. This software provides the possibility of implementing additional functions written in internal FISH or Python language into the models. It is concluded that state-of-the-art techniques for freeze hole drilling and surveying, on-site monitoring and advanced numerical analysis provide a significant potential for both the design and the operation of largescale ground freezing measures. The application of the extended numerical models for predictive simulations during construction allows for temporary shaft lining optimisation, for assisting in operational decision making and for compensating temporary loss of monitoring data. The Australian Centre for Geomechanics (ACG) held two workshops in 2019—one in Australia and one in Canada—to discuss processes and methods currently used in the mining industry for stope design and reconciliation. In practice, this work strives to optimise stope performance and aims to maximise ore recovery (minimise underbreak), while minimising dilution (overbreak). One of the key findings from the workshops was that current stope design practices, almost exclusively, rely on some versions of the empirical Stability Graph methods developed in 1980s. Although robust and useful at the feasibility study stage, there are a number of inherent shortcomings with this approach. The Stability Graph’s limitations first lie in that it cannot assess underbreak, which is a very important measure of performance. Furthermore, the method doesn’t consider a number of factors which often have a critical influence on stope stability, for example, drilling and blasting or the presence of faults. Given the current industry standard practice, there is a great opportunity to reinvent the stope design process to optimise performance. A finding of the workshops was that every mine quantifies stope performance in terms of volume reconciliation with a focus on dilution and ore losses, and reconciling metal tonnes recovered from the mill. Many mines further investigate stope performance by looking at individual stope faces and the causes for the deviations between the planned stope shape and the measured cavity. Recent research at the ACG has shown that investigating overbreak and underbreak at a higher resolution is a powerful way to identify the root causes of overbreak and underbreak. Finer scale assessment is achieved using an octree analyses, which effectively divides the relevant stope volume into cubes on the scale of a metre and produces many tens of thousands of data points. The octree data structure and subsequent analysis underpins a data-driven stope design methodology. The ACG is currently developing a design approach based on multivariate modelling methods that can account for the many variables that influence stope performance and forecast stope overbreak and underbreak results. Back-analysing stopes based on octree reconciliation results provides a rich database for training the model. Once the model can achieve reliable forecasting of overbreak and underbreak, an interactive drill-and-blast design will allow for the assessment of different firing strategies to optimise stope performance.

Rosebery mine has had over 100 years of mining activity. The reserve has remained static for the last eight years with an expected mine life of six years. A move to rectify this was made in 1994 with the birth of the Deep Exploration Project (DEP). $45 M was committed to drill 100 km of underground exploration diamond drilling and develop 5.5 kin of decline aiming to add 9.5 Mt to the reserves and minimise lead time for development of P and K lenses discovered in the early-1990s. In 1996 this aim was expanded with the objective to build the resource base to 20 Mt by June 2000 allowing the mill to operate at 1.0 Mtpa (0.9 Mt from underground). Preliminary results of the project to-date are outlined and exploration diamond drilling techniques and strategies are described.

While in some cases it is vitally important to measure the virgin stress in rock prior to tunnelling there are a number of cases where such stress measurement is really not required. The concept of having to have a number to put in a numerical model representing a continuum is often quite inappropriate. This paper discusses the cases when virgin stress measurement is required and the most appropriate means to measure it. The techniques discussed cover all of the overcoring systems, hydrofracture and borehole breakout measurements. It also covers the use of rock surface stress measurement, which is easy to perform and should be used to check for changing stress conditions. Unfortunately this technique has been ignored in recent times because engineers are addicted to numerical models requiring far field stresses rather than measuring the real values that exist where they matter – at the tunnel wall. A case is presented in which the measurement of surface stress in a tunnel boring machine tunnel enabled the far field stress to be determined in what must be the world’s largest overcore.CITATION:Gray, I, 2014. "Recognising that the mining industry is wedded to the break-even cut-off grade rather than a cut-off grade that optimises value, the author examines some perils and pitfalls in the use of break-even grades that lead to what the author calls ‘negatively geared ore reserves’.Negatively geared ore reserves occur when a portion of the ore reserves actually has a negative value and is effectively being subsidised by the more profitable portion of the ore reserves. This situation is generally difficult to detect with the level of information available to the public investor. The ore reserves can still be quite profitable in total, but now possess a level of risk that may not be appreciated.The risk profile (financial risk) of a negatively geared ore reserve is far greater than for a non-negatively geared ore reserve. Like a negatively geared investment property in a falling property market (for readers familiar with the Australian tax minimisation investment strategy), when the price of a commodity falls, a company that possesses a negatively geared ore reserve loses value at a magnified rate relative to a company that has a neutral or positively geared ore reserve. In the extreme case of a major commodity price reduction, as happened with the gold price in mid-2013, the negatively geared ore reserve can easily become negative value in total, not just in part.The negatively geared ore reserve is sometimes intentional – for instance in order to increase published ore reserve tonnages and meet the CEO’s key performance indicators – but is also often unintentional, resulting from various errors in the break-even calculation. The pervasiveness of poor sampling practices in and around mineral processing plants could seem intriguing in view of the various documented evidences both for causes and consequences. To this extent, this paper revisits the well-documented but lesser-known fact that failure to care sufficiently about how samples are selected and managed is the mother source of almost all sampling biases. The authors believe that the potentially huge leverage between causes and consequences as well as the diversity of people involved in sampling call for a globally integrated solution rather than for a point solution. Such a globally integrated solution has already been put forward by the AMIRA P754 Metal accounting – code of practice and guidelines (AMIRA, 2007) that inherently requires accuracy to be targeted, measured, reported and managed. Furthermore, always in order to avoid a point solution, several layers of protection against biases must be put in place with each one involving a different ownership whenever possible. This is exactly the role intended by the supervisory bias detection method described in this publication. It is based on the continuous monitoring of the expected value of reduced residuals obtained from statistical data reconciliation conducted in a metal accounting context. A residue storage facility (RSF) was designed to cater for Davidson Creek Area and Robertson Range Area operations under the FerrAus Pilbara iron ore development project in the Pilbara Region, Western Australia. Annual ore production was about 15 million tonnes over a period of up to 15 years. The RSF was designed to handle a tailings production rate of 2.2 Mt/a over the project life with ability to be expanded at a later date. The composition of tailings was predominantly -45 ¦ material with some spiral reject material. The fraction of solids was expected to be between 40 per cent and 50 per cent solids by weight.The RSF was designed as an above ground storage facility, integrating with a mine waste dump planned close to the selected RSF site. This integration helped to increase the stability of the RSF embankment and to reduce the construction cost. The main source of construction material for the remaining part of the RSF embankment was selected to be mine waste. The RSF was designed to be constructed in stages by considering the availability of mine waste according to the mining schedule. The use of mine waste for construction of RSF embankments has several benefits over use of borrowed material. The Gold Ridge Mine is an open-cut gold mine in the Solomon Islands. The mine is owned and operated by Gold Ridge Mining Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Ross Mining NL. At the invitation of the Solomon Island Government, project construction commenced in July 1997 and gold production commenced in August 1998. The mine is the countryÆs first, and represents a major milestone in the development of the Solomon Islands. At the time of project approval and construction, there was a growing awareness in the country of the potential impacts of mining in the tropics, partly due to unfavourable publicity surrounding a number of other mining operations in the Pacific region. The management of environmental impacts was therefore an important consideration in the approval of the project, and continues to receive a high level of attention from the Government and community. Ross Mining did not commit to the Gold Ridge Project until it had satisfied itself that all waste rock and tailings could be safely contained on-site, and that the standards normally expected of a mine in Australia could be met. Ross Mining approached the approval, construction, and operation of the Gold Ridge Mine with a set of operating principles that met Government and community concerns. These were:best practice environmental management; operation of the mine in accordance with standards expected of mining operations in Australia; independent peer review of key technical aspects; on-going consultation with Government and community; and equitable transfer of wealth to landowners and the local community. As a consequence, the Gold Ridge Mine has developed into a successful mining operation with a high level of support from local landowners, the general community and the Central and Provincial Governments of the Solomon Islands.
