THE following really forms the second part of, or a sequel to, a paper, " Ventilating Metalliferous Mines: a Method of Attack," read before the Broken Hill Branch of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in May, 1920. In that paper the writer advocated a consideration of the question of ventilation in metal mines from a different aspect to that 'which had hitherto prevailed locally. Various factors regarded as having an important bearing on the subject were set forth, together with the results of observations made during ventilation tests carried out at the mining department of the Zinc Corporation.During the subsequent discussion the question was raised of the possibility of any practical application of the method of attack described, and also whether the theoretical considerations mentioned were likely to be of any real utility to the mining engineer engaged in ventilation work in a metalliferous mine.

The ore extraction rate and the incorporation of new areas are key operational parameters. In massive deposits mined by caving techniques they both control the cave back geometry, which is mostly responsible for the induced stress state around productive levels. Early detection of deviations from admissible geometries will prevent stability problems related to geomechanical hazards, helping to improve safety and working conditions and reduce the potential for lost reserves.This paper describes a mine planning tool currently in use at the El Teniente mine. This tool involves the control of the cave geometry based on rules that have been defined as a result of different studies and experience collected during the operational history of the mine.This mine planning strategy achieves an extractive mining process with lower risk than conventional planning methods, ensuring ore reserves extraction if followed as planned while reducing unexpected changes in mining sequences.CITATION:Cornejo, J, Pinochet, A and Caviedes, C, 2016. Any economic evaluation of a lead-zinc mining project requires the estimation of net revenue per tonne of concentrate at the "mine gate". The value at the mine gate equals the Net Smelter Return minus all realisation costs. The paper develops a simple predictive model for Net Smelter Return based on metal prices.

Sphalerites from Devonian cassiterite-sulphide deposits and Pb-Zn-Ag fissure veins have similar ranges of Cd contents, but the average Cd and Fe contents could indicate a small initial difference in availability of Cd between the Zeehan-Renison Bell district and the Mt. Bischoff-Waratah district. Sphalerites from banded Pb-Zn deposits (Rosebery and Hercules) are characterized by low Cd content which is a world-wide feature of such deposits in exIrusive rocks, and may indicaIe a genetic relationship between ore deposition and vulcanism.

The use of column flotation cells for recovery of phosphate is becoming more common practice in certain parts of the world (Brazil, Russia) where igneous phosphate ores are processed. Igneous phosphates are generally finer grained (< 200µm) than some of the traditional sedimentary phosphates (<400µm). Australian phosphate from the Georgina basin is sedimentary, but has a much finer grain size (typically < 106µm) than similar deposits in North Africa and the USA.In 2013, Arianne Phosphate completed a bankable feasibility study for the development of their igneous phosphate deposit at the Lac a Paul site in Quebec. Initially, lab test work and bench scale piloting indicated that using traditional mechanical flotation would be able to produce adequate concentrate grade and an economic level of recovery, but would necessitate the installation of a complex and operationally challenging flotation circuit. Later pilot plant testing using column cells resulted in a significant reduction in process complexity and facilitated the processing of the -20µm ore fraction which resulted in a 10% increase in P2O5 recovery and a 5% increase in concentrate grade %P2O5.Flotation column testing achieved a concentrate grade of 38.6% P2O5 at a P2O5 recovery of 90%. Using a mechanical flotation cell circuit, the concentrate grade was 36.4% P2O5 with a P2O5 recovery of only 78.8%. A noticeable feature of the testing was the simplicity of the column flotation circuit configuration (Rougher + 2 stages of cleaning + Cleaner Scavenger) compared to the mechanical flotation cell circuit (Rougher + Scavenger + 3 stages of cleaning).The financial benefit for this case study was estimated using a sales price of US$ 195/t FOB for a 38.6% P2O5 product, and an assumed cost of production of US$ 95/t, the netback price is calculated at US$100/t. For a daily milling rate of 55,000t/d, the improved flotation performance provides additional concentrate production of 1,203t/d. Using the netback price calculated above, this calculates to additional gross profit of US$ 120,260/d.Annualised, this equals US$ 40.7 million in additional revenue for a similar or reduced CAPEX.The use of column flotation on fine grained phosphate ore types often requires fine grinding and desliming to liberate the phosphate value, such as the Australian sedimentary phosphate ores. The operation of grinding circuits are vital to the success of most mineral processing operations in the provision of effective size reduction whilst maximising throughput. However these same circuits, and especially semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills, are highly interactive with product re-circulations and long time delays. This makes the optimal control of these difficult by conventional controllers, such as PID, which generally places a heavy reliance upon operations for control. In order to account for the peculiarities (such as ore type changes) and the abnormal situations that continually beset these circuits, it is necessary to adapt linear control techniques to cater for these situations. The Honeywell Hi-Spec Solutions SmartGrindTM controller is a marriage of multivariable predictive control (MPC) with techniques that provide adaptation of the control to optimise the circuit under all conditions. Optimal control is achieved by incorporating pattern recognition techniques to detect and act on discrete events (eg ore type changes) and adaptation of the MPC to account for known process and equipment non-linearities. AlcoaÆs Wagerup Refinery is the first site worldwide to have this technology applied to the SAG milling circuits and this has resulted in throughput increases in excess of two per cent and significant improvements in circuit operations. This paper describes the implementation of the control to the refineryÆs Mill 3 bauxite grinding circuit and the capacity/operational improvements achieved thereof.

Open pit mine plans define the complex strategy of displacement of ore and waste over the mine life. Various mixed integer linear programming (MILP) formulations have been used for production scheduling of open pit mines. The main problem with these models is the inability to solve real size mining problems. We present a mixed integer linear programming formulation for the open pit long-term production scheduling problem. To reduce the number of binary integer variables in the formulation, we aggregate blocks into larger units referred to as mining-cuts. We present a semi-supervised clustering algorithm which aggregates smaller blocks based on rock types and grade ranges into mining-cuts without introducing an error in the grade estimated values. The cluster-based aggregation algorithm is fully integrated into an MILP mine production scheduling prototype software. We have implemented, verified, and validated our models. The efficiency of the new platform is evaluated through iron ore mine case study.

Analysis of rock discontinuities, collected using a scanline method, has been undertaken at the Iron Duke open cut mine, on the southern margin of the Middleback Range in the Gawler Craton, South Australia. The iron mineralisation, which is a product of supergene enrichment of carbonate sediments, is located on the W (western) limb of a gently N plunging D2 macrosyncline. Mesofolds plunge shallowly to the NE or steeply to SE, suggesting two shortening events, of which the second produced significant macrofolds. Discontinuities include:faults and shears which display variable orientations, mainly striking WNW dipping steeply N; mesofractures or joints maintaining a well constrained orientation, dipping steeply S, subvertical striking E-W; and bedding surfaces which are folded about a gently N plunging axis. Through this example of the regional control exerted on local discontinuities, it is clear that discontinuities are not randomly distributed as often assumed in purely statistical approaches. Commonly for rocks of any age there is a distinct discontinuity pattern, reflecting the geological deformation history. If the controls exerted on local rock discontinuities can be determined and assigned a number related to their significance, the way forward is available to develop a site specifc knowledge base that can make realistic predictions for any position in a given rock mass. Such a procedure would involve assessment of the regional geology, linked to scanned discontinuities either via manual or automatic means. Recent advances in automatic scanning rock faces (eg by the I-SiTE Laser Radar) to determine discontinuities distributions, enable the rapid calculation of rock characteristics. This is a significant advance in rock engineering, providing a method of safe and quick collection of data. However it creates problems in the presence of an increase in the geotechnical data available, which should be assessed in the context of the regional geology. Although techniques are underway to analyse post-blast discontinuities, the next signifant potential advance in this area could be the integration of a knowledge based system to assess discontinuities ahead of mining, incorporating regional assessment and human intuition.

Pyrite Bioleaching and Slag Neutralisation - Two Treatments in a Single Process for Recovering Valuable Metals from Both Materials Very often the production of copper sulfide concentrate yields pyrite concentrate as a by-product. This is the case at the Knre mine in northern Turkey. This kind of concentrate may contain low grades of valuable non-ferrous metals. Bioleaching of such pyrite concentrates is a processing technique to solubilise metals like copper, zinc or cobalt in a sulfuric acid pregnant solution. The pyrometallurgical processing of copper sulfide concentrate produces slag that still contains valuable metals in varying concentrations. Slag is used in many ways: as aggregates, ballast, pavement material, in cement production and glass making. Due to its relatively alkaline nature, it can also be used to neutralise acidic solutions. A preliminary study of the bioleaching of the pyrite concentrate (Co 0.28 per cent, Cu 0.56 per cent and sulfur as sulfide 42.6 per cent) produced at Knre has been undertaken with the assessment of the neutralisation of the acidic bioleach solution by using old slag (Co 0.29 per cent, Cu 1.70 per cent and sulfur as sulfide 0.89 per cent) stockpiled on the site. The main conclusions of the study were as follows: Knre pyrite was amenable to bioleaching at 40¦C. Cobalt solubilisation directly related to pyrite degradation reached a maximum yield above 90 per cent. Final copper recovery was limited to approximately 66 per cent not directly related to bacterial growth and pyrite oxidation. Slag could be used as a substitute for limestone as a neutralising agent in the bioleaching tanks. Cobalt and copper could be recovered from pyrite concentrate and slag simultaneously from both materials. A pre-feasibility study is underway to carry out a preliminary cost estimate of an installation for cobalt and copper production from these two materials processed in a single operation.

As requested by my fellow members I shall endeavour to read a paper on the Treatment of the Auriferous Sulphide Ores of Kalgoorlie from a metallurgical standpoint. Before going into the subject it will be necessary for me to make some slight explanations. As most of you are aware many of our London friends holding interests in some of these mines think it necessary that their doings should be shrouded in mystery. The result of this is that in some cases it is impossible to get any official figures from the mines for this paper. I must ask you not to lose sight of the fact that in treating the sulphide ores of the Kalgoorlie mines we had absolutely no data to start on, and that to-day. we are just beginning to get a fair grip of tbe subject; and though very high extractions were announced when the first plants were started on sulphide ore, it was well known that this was only to maintain the public confidence in the mines to allow time to make necessary adjustments; and, as showing the advance made in the treatment of the ore, I notice several of the mines have published the results of the final or re-treatment of the residues of their first sulphide treatment. I have also had the opportunity afforded me of thoroughly sampling the residues of several of the principal mines, and find the results as now published absolutely correct.

The Finisterre Range on the north coast of Papua New Guinea is the uplifted forearc riagio.n. of a modern arc-continent collision. The core of the range is composed of the P- nisterre Volcanics, an Oligocene''-arc terrane. The southern flank of the range consists of a clastic sedimentary sequence which is an uplifted accretionary wedge and collision complex. This clastic sequence can be subdivided into three distinct units. To the south of aiid structurally below the Finisterre Valcanics are the Mebu beds, an Oligocene- $arly Miocene sequence of volcanolithic turbidites. The Erap Structural Complex is south of, and structurally below the Mebu 43eds. , It consists of three subunits; the 3rly Pliocene micaceous turbidites of the Sukurum unit, contemporaneous pillow basalts AF{ the Basalt unit, and Late Pliocene to Pleistocene volcanolithic turbidites of the -Nariawang unit. The Quaternary Leron Formation, a fluvial to shallow marine 'clastic unit, is the southernmdst. and structurally lowest unit of the clastic -sequence The Finisterre Range is dominated by a fold-and-thrust belt with most thrusts "dipping steeply N. Melange fabric _ is developed in the vicinity of major thrusts. "ffle thrust belt strikes NW, oblique to the regional convergence direction, but no strike-slip motion is observed along NW striking faults.

Department of Pathology, British Post-graduate Medical School, London:The experiments here recorded were devised and carried -out during the last two years in an attempt to corroborate the important work of Denny, Robson and Irwin (1939) in which they found that experimental silicosis could be prevented by means of metallic aluminum. By causing rabbits to inhale powdered quartz for several months they induced experimental silicosis. These animals then served as controls for comparison with another group which were dusted with a mixture of quartz and aluminum. In the second group silicosis failed to develop.Our experimental procedure was somewhat different. We resorted to intratracheal insufflation instead of simple inhalation, and we used rats instead of rabbits: otherwise the essential features of the original experiments were carefully duplicated.EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES.A single dose of dust was delivered into the lungs of each animal. The dust was suspended in a fluid medium and injected by means of a syringe directly into the trachea in known quantity (technique of Kettle and Hilton, 1932). The suspensions were autoclaved before use and were injected with aseptic precautions. Having had a long experience of this technique we employed it with confidence and usually secured a fairly uniform dispersal of dust throughout both lungs. To carry out injections successfully one requires, above all, an even suspension of dust which will flow smoothly and quickly from the syringe. This is not difficult in the case of quartz, for, though it tends to settle out rather quickly, this can be avoided by constantly agitating the suspension. The syringe containing the inoculum may be shaken gently right up to the moment of injection and then emptied quickly to prevent sedimentation. Powdered aluminum is more difficult to handle, for the particles tend to flocculate and are not readily made to disperse evenly in saline, even by violent shaking. For this reason an emulsifying agent may be used to advantage, provided it does not complicate the experiment, a point to be mentioned again presently.THE EXPERIMENTSExperiments with quartz alone: Extensive silicotic lesions were produced in 23 out of 26 rats by the administration of pure quartz dust in doses of from 50 to 200 mg. per rat. The dust was so finely pulverised that the particles averaged about 1-p. in size: none was larger than 5 p. and 99 per cent. were under 2.5 p.Eight of these animals survived for seven months and were then killed...

Yallourn brown coal and its characteristics have been the subject of innumerable papers and discussions. The Lurgi process adopted for the production of Towns gas by the gasification of brown coal has been described frequently in literature.The application of the Lurgi process for the gasification of Yallourn briquettes has naturally lead to some unexpected problems. Rather than attempt to review the whole field of experience gained in the first two years of operation of the gasification plant at Morwell, this paper attempts to describe two problems encountered, peculiar to the fuel used, and the steps taken in overcoming them.THE PROCESS AND PLANTTo clarify the conditions surrounding the problems, it is necessary to briefly describe the gasification and cooling processes and plant.Brown coal briquettes are gasified in a pressure generator, using a mixture of steam and oxygen as a gasifying medium. Crude gas produced in the generator is washed and cooled in the waste heat boiler and coolers. Figure 1 shows an arrangement of the generator and coolers. The gasifying medium enters the generator through a hollow shaft in the base. Development of New Comminution Testing Methodologies for Geometallurgical Mapping of Ore Hardness and Throughput The emerging discipline of 'geometallurgy' is becoming increasingly recognised as a discrete and high-value activity that reflects an ongoing trend towards more effective mine site integration and optimisation. Constrained sampling that reflects and defines inherent ore body variability is a key geometallurgical requirement. This requires use of larger numbers of low-cost physical testing which can be applied to small sample volumes suitable for defining natural variability. The AMIRA P843 'GeMIII' project (Geometallurgical Mapping and Mine Modelling) is a major industry-supported research initiative designed to develop new tools, methods and protocols to support geometallurgical integration. As part of this integrated research a new more rapid low-cost comminution test (GeM Comminution index) has been developed which can be employed as a front line tool for geometallurgical mapping purposes and predictive throughput modelling. The test has been designed to be inserted into routine assay sample preparation and is based on constrained jaw crushing protocols linked to analysis of resultant size distributions. Extensive validation and modelling has shown the GeM Comminution Index (Ci) is correlated with the Drop Weight index A*b and Bond Mill Work Index (BMWi). Large scale trials have been conducted within a commercial assay laboratory to demonstrate and optimise incorporation of the Ci test into routine sample preparation protocols. While Ci based estimates of A*b and BMWi are not as precise compared to larger volume more expensive test-work, the ability to undertake large numbers of tests typically in a systematic down-hole manner, provides a high level of data support through adjacency. A Ci based approach is highly suitable for variability mapping, domaining and selecting large composite samples for more precise testing. Within the context of the AMIRA P843 project this forms part of an integrated work flow designed to support geometallurgical integration. The development of a comminution test linked to routine assay sample preparation represents significant value adding to a process that in most cases is already going to be carried out. Coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP) has re-emerged as a major concern in the Australian coal mining industry. Harmful effects from coal dust inhalation have been well documented, but the underlying causes and mechanisms of CWP are still debatable. Research conducted in the USA has proposed a plausible link between the presence of pyrite in coal and the prevalence of CWP. Reactive pyrite in coal oxidises under ambient mine conditions to produce various iron sulfate minerals such as melanterite, rozenite, roemerite and szomolnokite. Rapid reaction rates are promoted by the form (size and morphology) of the reactive pyrite present, which provides both increased surface area and increased porosity for easy air access to reaction sites. The products formed from reactive pyrite oxidation are often needle-like crystals with thicknesses in the order of 1–2 µm (eg melanterite and rozenite) and prismatic crystals with thicknesses less than 5 µm (eg roemerite) have been recorded. The densities of these minerals are significantly less than quartz, which makes them prone to becoming airborne with the normal coal dust. In fact, the mix of these mineral salts is commonly referred to as ‘fairy dust’ by mine workers due to the way they can become entrained and sparkle in the mine ventilation air, particularly if they occur in the upper part of a seam that is forming a coal roof. Examples are presented of the various products of reactive pyrite oxidation found in three Australian coal samples, which provide evidence of the physical and chemical mechanisms that would support the USA findings, particularly in terms of a source of bioavailable iron leading to increased inflammatory stress response.CITATION:Beamish, B B, Ward, C R and Chalmers, D, 2017. Mesothermal gold deposits of southernAlaska and Westland, New Zealand have both formed at the seaward edge of major collisional zones in the Pacific basin. In Alaska, production of large fluid volumes correlates in time with the addition of heat into the lower parts of the accreted terranes in the late stages of collisional orogeny. This heat was critical for driving both the metamorphic reactions that released the large volumes of fluid that carried the gold, and the contemporaneous widespread anatexis and magmatism. In Alaska's Chugach terrane, this heat as produced by subduction of a spreading ridge beneath the North America continental margin in the Eocene. The resulting products were the S-type granites and gold-bearing veins. The similar widespread S-type plutonism and gold veining in Westland's Buller terrane suggest that a similar tectonic event could have triggered ore formation along the southeastern edge of Gondwanaland. Based on the Alaskan model, a Devonian or Early Carboniferous age is favoured for high volume metamorphogenic fluid generation and gold vein formation in Westland.

Landscape interpretation, geology and mining history is being successfully used to explore options for sustainable community tourism product development. Recent work by the author in Europe and Australia has indicated the value of adding and producing interpretive information about mine and quarry locations - both active and inactive. This work has allowed for the branding and development of new sustainable community tourism products based on the landscape, folklore, mine and geological heritage.   Communities in rural areas are seeking new opportunities to sustain their local economies. Using a relatively new phenomenon called geotourism as a starting point; they have developed themed products connected to walking/cycling guides, interpretive panels and visitor centres. These themes can be linked to geology, archaeology, botany, local history and to industrial heritage sites such as old mines, to generate local employment. This new geotourism approach has successfully brought a new and greater audience to discover the value of geology and mining history.   Communities have established a unique place for themselves within the tourism marketplace using the geotourism brand. Other communities with an established tourism product are also now using geological and mine heritage via geotourism to rebrand and meet changing global trends. The pooling of resources under the banner of geotourism has led to cost effective marketing, targeting and promotion of products.   Geotourism has emerged strongly in Europe, North America and China in the last decade. The Australian minerals industry now has an opportunity to implement this new branding concept to assist and benefit the communities in which they run their activities. Communities can also take advantage of the potential to develop a sustainable geotourism business around a past or present mineral industry in their vicinity.

Mineral-deposit geology, geochemical processes, and biogeochemical processes are fundamental controls on the environmental conditions that exist naturally in mineralised areas prior to mining, and that result from mining and mineral processing. Input from economic geologists and geochemists is therefore crucial to effectively predict, assess, mitigate, and remediate the environmental effects of mineral-resource development. Recent open pit gold mining at Summitville, Colorado , has received intense public scrutiny for a variety of environmental problems, most important of which has been extreme acid drainage. Now a Superfund environmental cleanup site, Summitville exemplifies how economic geology and geochemistry principles: 1. could have been better utilized to first predict and minimise the environmental problems, and 2. can now be used to optimize the environmental cleanup.
