Oceana Gold as part of their environmental strategy are looking at various methods for cost-effective revegetation of their tailings dams. Under the concept of revegetating the tailings this study looked at several issues. These issues were; testing different methods of revegetation, arsenic (As) uptake in vegetation with respect to capping thickness, and background As levels in farmland areas above mineralised rocks. A number of plots were set up in a temporarily disused tailings dam to trial the direct sowing of ryecorn into the tailings.   Ryecorn was sown in sandy tailings (ca 1000 mg/kg As) and then covered with oxidised schist to anchor the seeds. This proved successful and ryecorn was established. Once the plots covered with oxidised schist were growing, 1 m and 2 m strips were sown on the sheltered side of the existing plots without the covering of oxidised schist. The uncovered plots also established successfully. From this set of trials a sowing plan can be developed that uses a minimum of resources to successfully establish vegetation. The maximum As content of the ryecorn was 80 mg/kg. Clover, Yorkshire fog and ryegrass plant matter was sampled from a pot trial that used different thicknesses of topsoil covering tailings material. As the thickness of topsoil increased, the amount of As taken up decreased. Soil samples were taken from farmland areas which were known to have elevated levels of As (up to 1000 mg/kg) in the top 10 cm. Vegetation samples were also taken from the same locations, and show the As levels in plants is <50 mg/kg.

The geochemical properties of Kaiata Mudstone and Brunner Coal Measures are evaluated in order to determine their suitability for placement at the proposed Cypress and existing Stockton mines. Correct scheduling of this waste material is needed in order to prevent sulfide oxidation and the generation of acid rock drainage. The Kaiata Mudstone has both acid generating and acid neutralizing properties. Results from this study and previous research from Kingett Mitchell Ltd (2003), indicate that within the Kaiata Mudstone sulphur content decreases with distance away from the Brunner Coal Measure/Kaiata Mudstone contact, while calcium carbonate content increases; sulphur values range from 0.33 to 4.23 wt %; and the acid neutralizing capacity ranges from 0 to 10.4 wt %. The Brunner Coal Measures have a low capacity to neutralize acid and sulphur content is variable ranging from 0.25 to 3.5 wt %. Appropriate control measures are therefore needed for the Brunner Coal Measures and any Kaiata Mudstone within close proximity to its contact. Tests have been undertaken to develop a rapid field or laboratory procedure to define the potentially acid-forming from the non-acid-forming Kaiata material. Results indicate that paste pH, Net Acid Generation (NAG) and Carbonate Bomb tests are suitable. Results from the Carbonate Bomb Test show a strong relationship with the Acid Neutralizing Capacity (ANC) and the Net Acid Production Potential (NAPP), indicating that this method may efficiently determine non-acid forming material in the field within fifteen minutes. Ongoing research includes kinetic column and shake extraction tests. These tests will quantify what trace elements could be leached from the waste rock and provide information on the usefulness of alkaline producing products such as Bauxsol, Limestone and Cement Kiln Dust.

In this paper it is argued that we are entering a new mining era, based on considerably more challenging orebodies as we rapidly expand minerals production by exploiting previously uneconomic deposits. Rapidly increasing production costs cannot be sustained by continually increasing commodity prices, as illustrated by the recent downturn in the industry.Driven by reduction in grade, requiring the processing of 50 to 100 per cent more ore to recover the same amount of metal, often accompanied by finer grain structure - necessitating a finer product size and more challenging recovery - the productivity of the mining industry is dropping in real terms. The author suggests that tweaking current technologies and relying on economies of scale will not turn the industry around, but rather a switch to considerably more efficient processing is required.It is imperative to utilise the properties of the orebody, especially in terms of variability, in revolutionising our processing techniques. Our new mantra may be æselective mass mining with flexible processingÆ. This paper explores how this may be implemented using current technology and equipment in order to change the cost profile of the new mining industry. Orebody knowledge, based on the underlying process drivers, rather than proxies, is required. These properties and their variability will need to be propagated into the orebody through utilising the geological data rather than smoothing block averages, which destroys information on variability.Novel flexible circuit designs are presented that can respond to a wide variability in ore properties and throughput requirements in order to slash processing costs and energy utilisation, while enhancing overall recovery. The success of these circuits will be based on an ability to predict at both design stage and in everyday processing the variable ore properties, which is dependent upon reliable orebody knowledge that caries variability and underlying processing properties.CITATION:Powell, M S, 2013. INAP was formed in 1998 by a number of major mining companies, with a view to sharing acid rock drainage knowledge and experience, and to coordinate global research on the management of sulfidic mine wastes. INAP is now moving to further strengthen its global role by networking with regional organisations that are active in the area of ARD, including MEND 3/NEDEM 3 in Canada, the ADTI in the USA and ACMER in Australia. The INAP-Regional Organisation partnership will be formally launched at the 6th ICARD.

Bowen Basin coalmines suffer from hot and humid ambient conditions during the summer period. The ambient conditions combined with high VRTs, increasing depth of working and significant equipment heat loads results in heat issues underground. Coalmines operate under heat stress management plans as required by legislation with associated trigger action response plans (TARPs). Some mines also employ refrigeration as part of their heat management strategy.A recent case study was conducted on a mine producing about 4.5 Mt/a from their longwall and experiences summer surface ambient temperatures of about 23.5ºCwb. The expected virgin rock temperature is 46ºC at 300 m depth. The mine currently introduces a modest amount of surface cooling at the portal using ‘off-the-shelf’ air conditioning units. This system does not effectively manage face temperature primarily due to positional inefficiency.Underground conditions remain hot in summer and work is typically undertaken in accordance with the Heat TARP. This has a direct impact on the productivity of crews, worker comfort and also negatively impacts the workforce morale. The mine commissioned a study to determine a refrigeration strategy aimed at maintaining underground conditions below TARP levels 90 per cent of the time.The ventilation network model was calibrated against actual temperature data to simulate the heat loads including longwall, conveyor system, strata and auxiliary diesel fleet. This model was then used to determine the cooling requirements for bulk surface cooling, bulk underground cooling, surface district cooling and underground district cooling strategies.These estimates were used to undertake a total owning cost trade-off for the different strategies. The study concluded that a chilled air shaft has the lowest technical risk but the highest total owning cost due to shaft development needs. Introducing chilled water to an underground cooler via boreholes offered the lowest total owning cost and was therefore recommended.CITATION:van den Berg, L and Olsen, M, 2017. The provision of professional engineering services in Queensland is regulated through the Professional Engineers Act 2002. The Act requires that anyone providing professional engineering services must be registered and is subject to continuing professional development requirements. The engineering profession is actively requesting the Queensland Government to expand registration to include associate and technologist engineering practitioners. In view of the strong moves at the Federal level towards national registration of professional groups the lessons of the Queensland experience are very relevant across Australia. This paper describes the rationale behind the Act and outlines its operation. It discusses some misconceptions regarding the applicability of the Act to various engineering activities. There is much that the Act has to offer individual engineers and industry generally in establishing, articulating and maintaining standards for professional engineering work. The paper considers legal actions taken to date under the provisions of the Act and discusses the way in which this parallels industry moves towards quality assurance of work force capability.

There is approximately 240 000 tonnes of arsenic trioxide dust stored in underground chambers at the Giant Mine in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada. To minimise the amount of arsenic released to the environment, a number of closure alternatives are being considered. One alternative is to mine the dust, encapsulate it and dispose the mixture into a secured landfill. The potential leaching behaviour of the encapsulated dust was examined in a laboratory programme. Cylinders of arsenic trioxide dust mixed with cement/aggregate and bitumen were prepared. The dust content varied between zero per cent and 60 per cent of dry weight charge. The cement cylinders were tested for strength, leaching and freeze/thaw durability. The bitumen cylinders were tested for leaching only. The results show that increasing dust content in the cement cylinders negatively impacts the strength and the freeze/thaw durability of the samples. A contributing factor is likely the high water to cement ratio in the samples. Leaching tests show that arsenic release from cement cylinders increase with increasing dust content. Arsenic concentrations in leachates do reach a plateau at a certain point in time. Arsenic release from bitumen cylinders was significantly lower compared to cement cylinders. Arsenic concentrations eventually were less than 0.05 mg/L in samples containing up to 25 per cent arsenic trioxide dust. Arsenic leaching rates were found to decrease by an order of magnitude over the course of three months.

Ausmelt top submerged lance technology is at the cutting edge of technological developments in non-ferrous metal smelting with commercial operations throughout the world. The Technology is being used for lead smelting, copper smelting and matte converting, fuming zinc from slags, recycling iron residue from zinc plants, processing the aluminium industry hazardous waste SPL , precious metal processing, nickel-copper residue smelting and converting, and tin smelting. The Technology is also being developed for projects involving iron-making and waste industry opportunities. There are 19 furnaces operable or under design at the time of writing. The benefits to operators using Ausmelt Technology vary depending on application, but typically result from environmental improvements, enhanced recovery of valuable products, lower capital and operating costs, more flexible operations capable of handling a wide range of feed materials, better removal of impurities, or improved product quality. Growing industry acceptance of the Technology is evidenced by the fact that more than 20 per cent of the worldÆs tin production will be extracted in systems using Ausmelt Technology when the Yunnan Tin Corporation plant starts up in 2001. Metallurgists, industrialists and investors have accepted the Technology for improved operations in both greenfield main smelters and add-on plants in Korea, China, Japan, Germany, Peru, Zimbabwe, India, Namibia and Australia. Ausmelt intends that this paper will update the industry by outlining recent achievements of the Technology in global metallurgical operations.

The Jinfeng mine is Sino Gold's flagship project and is the second largest gold mine in China. Sino Gold Limited (SGL) holds 82 per cent equity in the Sino-Foreign joint venture Sino Guizhou Jinfeng Mining Limited (SGJML) with a Chinese partner. Jinfeng is located in a relatively remote site in southwestern Guizhou province. The orebody is considered to be the largest known Carlin type deposit in China. Jinfeng Plant has the world's third largest BIOX« bacterial oxidation facilities (790 t/d), treating highly refractory concentrate generated from crushing, semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) and ball milling and bulk sulfide flotation operations. The Jinfeng Plant construction started in February 2005, commissioning was completed in April 2007, and commercial gold production was achieved in September 2007. This paper describes the successful operations of Jinfeng Plant over the last two years. The key events of the project development are described, from the project background and process design, through to the commissioning and achieving design mill throughput of 3600 t/d resulting 180 000 ounces of gold per year. Process aspects of the BIOX« and carbon-in-leach (CIL) operations over the last two years are discussed which illustrate a very high BIOX« oxidation rate (more that 97 per cent) and excellent CIL recovery (more than 96 per cent). The management of the Jinfeng plant CIL tailings detoxification and filtration is described, and Jinfeng has became the first BIOX« processing plant to have achieved dry stacking of detoxified and pressure filtered CIL tailings. Current efforts to recover cyanide from CIL detoxified solution and the achievement of a zero discharge site water balance are also introduced. Many improvement projects have been made over the last two years which have culminated in a 15 per cent increase in mill throughput over the design and BIOX« CIL recovery increasing from 92.5 per cent to 96 per cent. Significant operating cost reductions from lowered of acid, lime and cyanide usage through process modifications and technical innovations are discussed.

A simulation and animation model was constructed for the Stockton Coal Mine. This mine is located in the north western area of the South Island of New Zealand. This model was used to study the optimum size of the stockpile areas whilst achieving the correct product coal qualities. The model evaluated the impact on stockpile size and product coal qualities for both bulk and selective mining. The effect of modifying the amount of known clean coal quality was also investigated. The software used was GPSS/H« for the simulation and Proof Professional« for the animation. From the study, it was recommended to incorporate selective mining in future studies. The shipping plan needed to be modified for a better correlation between coal production levels, in situ coal resources and wash plant capacity.
