Recent mapping at the Kelian epithermal gold deposit in East Kalimantan, Indonesia has delineated intrusive and extrusive-phreatomagmatic breccias, their magmatic roots, and late-stage endogenous domes of a maar-diatreme complex. The Kelian epithermal system is characterised by a wide variety of mineralised and unmineralised breccias, which include tectonic, hydrothermal, phreatic and phreatomagmatic varieties. Phreatomagmatic breccias and associated igneous rocks post-date early stage alteration and mineralisation, and pre-date main stage precious and base-metal mineralisation. This study emphasises the spatial, temporal and genetic links that have been drawn between diatremes and both epithermal and porphyry systems in volcano-plutonic arcs.

It's long been suspected that there has been an increase in the incidence of premature failure of rock bolts in underground coal mines over the past ten years. As far back as 2002 a study found a possible contributor to such premature failure in some Australian coal mines might be linked to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) (Crosky et al, 2002). That study suggested the low impact toughness could be a major influence on the susceptibility to SCC of different steel compositions. A subsequent study involving laboratory corrosion tests however failed to confirm any link with metallurgical factors (Villalba and Atrens, 2007), a finding that is at odds with field experience. Some mine sites today are still reporting prematurely failed rock bolts to the rock bolt manufacturers; the failures are being identified at SCC induced. To this end a research project has recently been commissioned at University of New South Wales (UNSW), which aims to identify the environmental factors causing SCC, through field test sites and simulating the conditions within an accelerated corrosion laboratory. After completing a feasibility study in 1987, Niugini Mining Limited (NML) obtained five Gold Mining Leases within PA 632, covering the Mount Victor and Clarkes Ridge gold deposits. Reserves prior to mining were 260 000t at 3.63g/t Au for Mount Victor and 40 000t at 2.8g/t Au for Clarkes Ridge. Ore was mined from the two deposits by NML from November 1987 to January 1990. A total of 645kg of gold and 346kg of silver were produced from 198 000 tonnes of ore pro- cessed. Mining and milling operations ceased in February 1990. Since then, there has been significant progress in rehabilitating and revegetating the site. Plant and workshop facilities have been dismantled and removed from site, exposed parts of the pit have been landscaped and replanted, tailings water has been neutralised and discharged, and the dam filled. All remaining personnel and equipment left the site in November 1990. It is envisaged that the replanted areas will be rapidly revegetated, leaving little evidence of mining. Niugini Mining did not recoup the initial investment for Mount Victor, but the mine produced a positive cash flow and made a significant' financial contribution to the local communities and Papua New Guinea as a Whole.

In August 2001 the Minister for Conservation declined an application by GRD Macraes for an access arrangement to enable work at the Globe Progress Mine near Reefton. In her decision, Ms Lee said:æI have considered whether potential compensation and the proposed safeguards against some of the adverse effects are sufficient to outweigh my concerns as to the loss of conservation values, consistency with the objectives of the Conservation Act, the purposes for which the land is held by the Crown and, to a lesser extent, the North Westland Regional Management Plan. I do not think they are sufficient. To my mind, my concerns as to the consistency with the objectives of the Conservation Act, the purposes for which the land is held and the loss of some conservation values in particular, outweigh any potential compensation and possible mitigation of adverse effects.Æ Commenting on the MinisterÆs decision Guy Salmon of the Ecological Foundation stated that the Minister should have invited the applicant to provide a 10 000 hectare pest-free wildlife sanctuary as part of the æpriceÆ for obtaining that access. However,æfor many people of green persuasion, it has become fashionable to say no every timeàthose who really have the well-being of the environment at heart, will want to look carefully at the bigger picture of environmental restoration needsàThe deciding criterion: the mining company should show that its involvement on conservation land would produce a net conservation gain. That is a criterion that creates the right incentives for win-win-win solutions on conservation land.ÆThis paper considers whether the concept of off site mitigation is one which fits within the current legal regime. Two questions arise:Can such mitigation/compensation be legally considered in access arrangements or required as a condition of resource consents? Is this a realistic option for industry to be pursuing?

Failure of rock materials is a process of crack propagation. Crack initiation takes place when the crack tip stress intensity K reaches a critical value called fracture toughness, K1C. The rock fracture toughness is known to be affected by the surrounding environment such as temperature, confining pressure and humidity. In order to examine the effect of humidity, a series of semi-circular bend tests were performed under various water vapour pressures in a rock material that is known to be anisotropic. Water vapour promotes stress corrosion of rock and therefore the fracture toughness was found to have a decreasing trend with increasing water vapour pressure. The rate of decreasing the fracture toughness depends on the microcrack density that promotes the migration of water vapour into the rock. Also in an anisotropic rock, the fracture toughness depends on the direction of crack in relation to the anisotropy of the rock material.

The full history of exploration successes, failures and related costs from initial greenfield exploration in 1987 to the current brownfield stages was analysed for the Plutonic Marymia Gold Belt of Western Australia. This belt, which had escaped the attention of turn-of-the-century prospectors and had not produced any gold until 1990, is an ideal area for a collectively exhaustive, progressive value and risk case study of expected return on gold exploration. The study analyses the progressive screening of over 200 greenfield and near mine prospects, through various stages of exploration to the establishment of 38 mining sites, ranging from a few large mines to small satellite operations. It provides empirical estimates of the historical Bayesian probability of projects advancing to successive stages of exploration, eg from reconnaissance, to systematic drill testing, resource delineation, feasibility and mine development, given a successful outcome in any exploration phase. The ratio between the estimated value of the gold discovered and the corresponding historical exploration expenditure in each year and cumulatively, ie the average cost of discovery per ounce of gold, are then computed as measures of historical return on the exploration investment in this belt. These, together with an estimate of the æresidualÆ gold endowment, ie of the number and size of possible as yet undiscovered deposits, generated through the use of rank statistics (ie ZipfÆs law), provide a basis for future strategic consideration in exploration targeting in this and similar geological terranes.

Green policies have gained momentum since the 1972 Stockholm, Environment Conference. The environmental movement has influenced political initiatives both in New Zealand and abroad. Governments and international institutions have addressed local, regional and global environmental issues with varying degrees of success. New Zealand so far has not supported the United Nations' call for sustainable development in a consistent manner. New institutions and new rules for resource management mean there are opportunities to look after the land in different and more ecologically sensitive ways than has happened in the past. The increasing influence of regional councils in resource management planning will have important implications for mining and mineral exploration. These trends are discussed and possible future events outlined. Green policies have gained momentum since the 1972 Stockholm Environment Conference. Environmental issues are now global and the twentieth year Environment Conference planned for 1992 is likely to see new commitments made by world leaders and their national governments. Green politics may be the popular trend of the moment but green principles of managing the earth's resources are here to stay. There are many businessmen, many technologists, and many politicians who have hoped that the environmental movement was a passing fad and would fade into oblivion. The evidence is otherwise. Far from passing into oblivion, the environmental movement is growing rapidly. Each year brings further scientific data that indicates mankind is on a self destructive course unless we learn how to better manage the earth's natural resources. This information has contributed to a growing population of environmentally aware people. In the last 20 years there have been messages of concern about a population increase out of control and the energy crisis which focused on dwindling oil stocks. The issues are all interrelated including the present global issues of climate change and thinning ozone layers. The attention being given the messages by the United Nations and member states requires similar attention by industry. The problems have been identified; the challenge is to determine what should be done about them. Every challenge brings new opportunities and the future need not be doom and destruction. Mining is seen by some of the environmental action groups as unnecessarily destructive of the environment, but I do not see mining ceasing in the next few decades. Rather, the rules will be clearer with some areas excluded from mining, the methods of extraction will improve, the technology of processing will become more sophisticated and restoration of mining sites will be not only normal practice worldwide, but the end result may leave no hazards, may enhance the landscape and may result in acceptance of the industry by the general public. For that to happen, commitment and cooperation is required between the industry, the government, and society. As an Officer of Parliament my role is to review the system of agencies and processes established by Government for allocating, using and preserving natural resources and to report whether the system is maintaining and improving the quality of the environment. I also have a responsibility to see that the environmental planning and management carried out by public authorities is effective. That Ineans I have a keen interest in how the mining industry is administered by New Zealand public authorities, including Ministers of the Crown and district and regional councils. Today I intend to review the approach to resource management being taken by international agencies and by the New Zealand Government, and to comment on how environmental impact assessment for mineral exploration, as well as mining, may be administered in the future.

The steeply dipping silver/lead/zinc orebodies at Mount Isa mine have been extracted most recently by a combination of cut-and-fill and open stoping methods. Bench stoping was first used at Mount Isa Mine seven years ago to allow safe extraction of a highly stressed cut-and-fill stope. Subsequent benches have shown that the method offers significant cost and safety benefits through increased productivity and reduction in man exposure. The success of benching has lead to cut-and-fill mining being replaced at Mount Isa.Significant resources have been focussed to optimise benching. This paper describes the operational, planning, and research and development aspects which have contributed to the method to date. A brief look is also taken at the future direction of benching at Mount Isa.

Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB) operates one iron ore mine, three concentration plants and three pelletising plants in Kiruna, Sweden. The current methods of separation at the beneficiation plants are low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS) and reverse apatite flotation, where the wet LIMS stage is regarded as the crucial part of silica separation from the ore. Because future silica levels are expected to increase in the incoming material to the beneficiation plants, geometallurgy has become an important area of development and research.A laboratory-scale methodology was developed for the systematic characterisation of the ore for mineral processing, with the focus on the high silica ore type B2 and newly discovered subtypes. This methodology combines mineralogical, geochemical and process mineralogical characteristics. Automated mineralogy (QEMSCAN®) is used to study the modal mineralogy, the distribution of silicate minerals in different particle size classes after comminution, the deportment of silicon (Si) between various silicates and the degree of liberation and intergrowth of magnetite and silicates. An essential stage in the systematic characterisation of the ore deposit for mineral processing is the estimation and simulation of different parameters from the laboratory scale to the full scale at the concentration plants. This is achieved by using empirical models based on the data collected at the mineral processing plants. As the first step to implement the geometallurgical information, the current geological model is reconstructed with the mineralogy and the two, newly defined subtypes of high silica ore type B2 are separated into different domains.To study the reduction of the SiO2 content in the magnetite concentrate, a large-scale reverse cationic silicate flotation laboratory test program was initiated in early spring 2016. This program investigated potential silicate flotation in the beneficiation plants at the Kiirunavaara site. The second target is to implant mineral processing parameters into the block model based on the new geological model. This information provides a good basis for making a prognosis for mine planning and a quality prognosis regarding the crude ore for mineral processing.CITATION:Niiranen, K, 2017. Rehabilitation approaches, methods and outcomes have changed markedly over the last 100 years, and especially over the last 20 years. Alluvial gold dredges have moved from creating a legacy of boulder fields and ponds to radiata pine plantations and highly productive dairy pastures. The rehabilitated farmland has reduced flood risk, improved drainage and efficient paddock design. The next challenge is to include areas of environmental diversity in these projects, for example, shelter belts, patches of native trees, and wetlands that were part of the original landscape.   West Coast coal mines have also come from a legacy of leaving it to nature to rehabilitate damage by mining to establishing native ecosystems or plantation forests. Developments in techniques at Stockton Mine are used to illustrate the changes in approach to rehabilitation of native forest and tussock heathland ecosystems. The proposed Cypress Mine will adopt a full range of avoidance, remediation through rehabilitation, and off-site mitigation techniques in a æthree-prongedÆ approach.   We propose a coordinated extractive industry approach to mitigate for the impacts of mining on native ecosystems and achieve nationally important conservation benefits that individual projects cannot afford. This approach is particularly beneficial in New Zealand, as our native ecosystems must be actively managed to conserve native plants and animals. Currently, some important species and ecosystems are not being actively managed for conservation.

In the last 30 years, human appropriation of global renewable resources has accelerated to the point where 35 per cent of the earthÆs land surface is now in managed agro-ecosystems, consumptive water use consumes between 50 per cent and 85 per cent of freshwater supply and 60 per cent of ecosystem services are utilised in an unsustainable manner. There are virtually no landscapes in which renewable resources are not already fully allocated among different economic and environmental uses. Furthermore, it is increasingly recognised that water availability issues do not exist in isolation but are linked with the related environmental issues of biodiversity preservation, the carbon cycle, soil degradation, and energy use and supply. It is against this background that the sustainable management of water in mining is increasingly developing a strategic viewpoint where water is viewed as a resource within an interconnected landscape, having economic, environmental and social value and providing a range of environmental services in the provision of public and private goods. This paper explores the issues associated with sustainable management of water in mining from a strategic viewpoint. The cumulative impacts of multiple water users, both within and outside the mining sector, is increasingly threatening the security of supply for all users. To quantitatively assess the ætrueÆ value of water it is necessary to: Better understand the science of ecosystem functioning and how human actions impact on environmental processes. Develop appropriate policy, finance and governance structures to support innovative programs that preserve ecosystem function and services (including market based instruments). Apply knowledge as interventions across landscapes in ways that maximise benefits and minimise unintended consequences taking into account differences in the value of water among sectors. A strategic viewpoint of water management relies on knowledge to guide decision making that has been acquired at a range of scales from mine site to mining region. This knowledge must be based on rigorous science, sound data and syntheses of different types of information. Strategic management of water resources will better position the industry in terms of understanding the risks posed by complex, interlinked environmental issues that are increasingly impacting on future access to land and renewable resources, including water, thereby ensuring miningÆs future social licence to operate.

The 1981 Review: In the late 1970s there was an upsurge of interest in the prospecting and mining of this countryÆs mineral resources. That upsurge of interest was accompanied by a mounting public concern over the damage mining operations might do to the environment. Concern was also expressed about what some people perceived as inadequacies in the legislation which regulates mining and the grant of mining privileges, and inconsistencies in the relationship of that legislation to other legislation regulating land use and the use of resources.

The Nam San copper-gold deposit was discovered in 2011 and is a likely blind extension of the Permian age Phu Kham structurally deformed porphyry/skarn copper-gold deposit.The Nam San mineralisation is hosted within a dominantly sericite altered schist unit located to the north of the current Phu Kham open pit operation and is overthrust by an allochthonous barren cover sequence of limestone, granite and sandstone. Reinterpretation of the Phu Kham geology developed the concept of a possible telescoped porphyry copper-gold system at depth. Initial drilling intersected remobilised copper mineralisation in a basal conglomerate, confirming the concept. A reconnaissance vector array induced polarisation (IP) survey identified a deep chargeability anomaly from which a drilling target was developed from 3D inversion modelling of a detailed follow up dipole-pole-dipole anomaly. Drilling of the chargeability anomaly intersected the blind Nam San copper-gold mineralisation beneath the thrusted cover sequence.The key discovery parameters are the result of an integrated exploration program that included reinterpretation of the local stratigraphy, which developed the concept of a deep blind orebody, IP surveys capable of penetrating through the barren cover and a commitment to a deep directional drilling program to test these concepts and targets. This paper briefly describes the shaft, including sinking, steel sets and their installation, shaft equipment and winders.INTRODUCTIONThe New Broken Hill Consolidated Ltd. Service Shaft is a vertical concrete-lined circular shaft, 20 ft. in diameter with -steel sets spaced at 12-ft. centres. The diameter of 20 ft. was established as the minimum that would enable the shaft both to house the proposed hoisting and service equipment and to satisfy ventilation requirements as a downcast airway. The 12-ft. set spacing was based on South African practice in similar types of shafts.The shaft extends from the surface to 28 ft. below No. 22 Level, a total depth of 3,194 ft. Sinking was commenced in September 1946, and equipping completed in January 1955. Initially the shaft was sunk and concrete-lined to a depth of 52 ft., using a stiff-legged crane and clam-shell grab for mucking. Operations were suspended at this depth to allow the installation of the steel sinking head-frame, winders and ancillary equipment.Sinking and concreting were recommenced after four months and continued to a depth of 1,035 ft. 6 in., where the shaft connected with a pilot opening. The concrete lining was poured as sinking progressed and was piped from the surface to this depth, after which all concrete was lowered in buckets and discharged through a distributor suspended in the shaft. A cycle of stripping to the pilot opening and concreting was continued until the shaft reached No. 22 Level. From this level the remaining 28 ft. was sunk full size. All plats were cut and concreted as sinking progressed.

The Golden Cross Mine is located on the North Island of New Zealand, at the base of the Coromandel Peninsula, approximately 8 km northwest of Waihi. The project is operated as a Joint Venture with Coeur Gold New Zealand holding 800/0 and Viking Mining Limited with a 20% interest. The past open-pit and underground gold and silver producer has been in the reclamation phase of the operation for approximately 2.5 years and is now nearing completion. Although rehabilitation of the site is a regulatory requirement, the Closure Plan has been enhanced by the ongoing commitment of the Joint Venture to establish a sustainable land use for the site by commissioning engineered facilities designed to last for perpetuity. The Joint Venture identified six significant design features that were key to successful rehabilitation. These were the controlled placement of acid generating waste rock into engineered disposal sites; the design and placement of sealing layers over the waste rock disposal sites; the design and construction of diversion drains; the establishment and management of vegetation to protect the oxygen diffusion layer; a partial capping of the tailings to accelerate consolidation adjacent to the tailings dam embankment, and the implementation of a cyanide recovery circuit to recycle cyanide from the tailings prior to disposal. Another key to success for the project involved genuine consultation with all parties participating in the planning, evaluation, and consenting of the closure process at Golden Cross. The local and regulatory community has been widely represented in the Joint Venture's operating and closure plans throughout the history of the mine. Participants include: Regional and District Councillors and staff members, professional peer reviewers, environmental groups, local residents of the valley, and Iwi. This overall commitment to the project has resulted in a world-class rehabilitation program for the first modern metal-mine closure in New Zealand and we believe that collectively, the work done at Golden Cross is helping to set a standard for the success of future programs within the extractive industry.

For years traditional optical microscopic techniques have been used successfully to carry out mineralogical studies on processing products. Essential information could be obtained by supplementing microscopic data with X-ray powder diffraction data, chemical analyses, etc. However, most of the time the mineralogists working on plant related issues, would supply qualitative information to the metallurgists, due to quantification not being possible in the available time. Since the late-80s, the use of semi-automated to automated techniques for mineral quantification has impacted positively on the use of mineralogy for optimising processing plants. Rustenburg Platinum Mines (now Anglo Platinum) were the first mining company to purchase a Qem*Sem in 1987. With the success achieved in quantifying the minerals in the concentrator streams of the Rustenburg Platinum operations, a second instrument was purchased soon after. These instruments have proven invaluable tools in understanding the flotation behaviour of the sulfide and gangue minerals in the various reefs of the Bushveld. Restrictions in the resolution of these earlier instruments, as well as the time involved in searching for and correctly identifying the fine-grained platinum-group minerals (PGM), meant that these investigations focused on the deportment of the more abundant base metal sulfides, rather than on the actual PGM. The Mineral Liberation Analyser (MLA), which became available in the late 1990s, was well suited to detect and analyse minerals occurring in trace amounts such as the PGM. Anglo Platinum was the first mining company to purchase such an instrument and now has fourteen systems operating at the AR Crown Mines site. One of the applications of these systems involves the study of feeds, concentrates and tailings from the various concentrators on a monthly basis. These routine investigations provide information on a variety of mineralogical parameters, including liberation, association, and grain size. Results are used to emphasise areas for improvement, and specifically underline those areas where improvements will have the most impact on recovery. After new or different technologies have been implemented, mineralogical characterisation of the different process streams is an essential component in the assessment of the impact of these changes on flotation performance. In addition, the knowledge is databased for future reference to draw trends across the various concentrators around the Bushveld complex, and is also used for comparative studies when plants experience high losses to tailings. Due to the success of these investigations the question was posed whether it was possible to obtain data on a daily basis, as compositing samples could hide the impact of daily events. Although the instruments currently used are suitable for a research environment, these are not ideal for mine-site implementation. For that reason Anglo Platinum, together with FEI embarked on a development program to develop a system that can be implemented on-site to measure the important mineralogical characteristics on a daily basis. Important requirements for such a system include time-to-data, ease of use and regular quality control. Highlighting some results from concentrator studies, the presentation will review the progress on the development of automated mineralogical techniques for fast, automated mineral measurements. Before presenting this address I desire to express my appreciation of the honour which has been conferred on me by my election as iPresident of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. At this stage it might not be out of place to recall that Broken Hill was the birthplace of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, originally formed as the Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers in 1893.In selecting for my address the topic of "The Broken Hill Mining Industry and its Contribution to the Economy of Australia" I realise it is impossible to cover fully every aspect of the nation's economy which owes all or part of its origin to the Broken Hill field. Nevertheless, I feel that some attempt should be made to give credit to the Broken Hill mining industry for its part in the progress which Australia has made over the past seventy years.. If we care to reflect for a moment it soon becomes apparent that, not only is the Broken Hill mining industry an important producer of base metals for domestic and overseas consumption, but its profits have provided the means whereby many of Australia's leading secondary industries have been established or built up. Examples which come to mind are the founding of the iron and steel industry by the Broken Hill Proprietary Company; the establishment of plants at Port Pirie in South Australia, and at Risdon in Tasmania, for the production of metallic lead and zinc; and also at Port Kembla for the smelting of copper ores. Multiple regression analysis was used to predict elemental concentrations of copper and nickel in soils from consideration of the concentration of these elements in vegetation in an ultrabasic complex in New Zealand. Regression equations were computed from sixteen independent variables involving concentrations of ten elements in plant ash, and various physical factors such as slope and altitude of the site, and height of the tree. One elemental and one physical variable were significant for nickel at the 90 per cent level of probability and five elemental and two physical variables were significant for copper at the same level. Use of the regression equations explained 32·5 per cent and 26·5 per cent of the variance in the respective relative accumulations (amount in plant divided by amount in soil) of copper and nickel.Predicted concentrations of copper and nickel in soils agreed more closely with the observed values in the soils than did the levels of these elements in plant ash.Although the results may specifically apply only to the test area, the principles should have universal application.

In presenting this paper the author has in view a twofold purpose. In the first place, it is intended to set forth for the benefit of practical mining men some account of the principles underlying the design of tungsten carbide rock bits in the hope that a knowledge of these principles will assist in the successful application of the bits to mine and quarry drilling. Secondly, by evoking discussion, and even controversy, it is hoped that manufacturers and users of these rock bits will be encouraged to contribute to the general knowledge of a subject which to date has been rather lacking in published literature. The author well appreciates that many of the conclusions drawn in this paper are highly controversial, but if the only result is to call forth contradictory testimony from other workers in this field, at least one of his purposes will have been achieved.An attempt will first be made to set forth and examine those characteristics which go to make up an efficient rock bit, and the main factors affecting these characteristics will be discussed. In a paper of this general nature, consideration of any particular aspect must necessarily be rather brief, and there is little opportunity for detailed presentation of test procedures and data. Grey River Gold Mining Limited (GRGML) has constructed and largely completed the commissioning of an alluvial gold dredge designed to recover gold from a low grade gold deposit in the Grey River Valley, New Zealand. The most important resource that GRGML has are the people who are employed by the organisation. The low grade of the deposit necessitates the requirement to operate the dredge at optimum efficiency, which in turn requires the work force to be of high calibre and continually motivated. The primary prerequisite for employment at GRGML is for employees to be receptive to new ideas and have the adaptability to develop new skills and apply those skills to the changing demands of the workplace.   A continually changing organisational structure is utilised to meet the needs of a changing work environment. The adoption of an innovative site employment agreement allowing for flexible working hours has aided the achievement of good employee productivity and attendance.   Employees gain a higher quality of life by working a roster pattern involving twelve hour shifts and a four day on, four day off pattern.   Employees and management are communicating very well and working together to achieve organisational goals which will ultimately benefit the employees, the shareholders, the local community and the mining industry generally.
