This chapter is concerned with the uses, geology, exploration, evaluation, preparation for markets, and future of 90thorium and 39yttrium, along with 14 rare-earth elements. The rare-earth metals or lanthanides were divided into three categories by Berzelius. The cerium subgroup is comprised of 57lanthanum, 58cerium, 59praseodymium, 60neodymium, and 62samarium. 61Promethium does not occur naturally. The terbium subgroup includes 63europium, 64gadolinium, and 65terbium. The remaining lanthanides are placed in the yttrium subgroup. Strictly speaking, yttrium is not a rare earth. Because the properties of yttrium resemble those of heavy rare earths, its name has been used as a designating adjective. The yttrium subgroup includes 66dysprosium, 67holmium, 68erbium, 69thulium, 70ytterbium, and 67lutetium. Rare-earth elements, especially those of the same subgroup, tend to occur together rather than in discrete minerals.

I. INTRODUCTION. LIME-ROASTING is a term proposed by Ingalls 1 for the operation of forcing air under pressure through a mixture of galena and lime at the kindling-temperature with the object of oxidizing lead and sulphur and of fritting or fusing the charge. If, finely-divided galena were treated in this manner without the addition of lime, the heat set free by the oxidation of part of the lead and the sulphur would be sufficiently great to fuse undecomposed sulphide, and thus stop desulphurization. Besides the chemical action that the addition of lime, limestone or gypsum to the charge may have, the admixture has the physical effect that it keeps the particles of galena separated from one another and accessible to the oxidizing effect of the air. At present, three methods of lime-roasting are carried out on a working-scale, the Huntington-Heberlein, the Carmichael-Bradford and the Savelsberg2 processes. In the last, which interests us here, an 8-ton charge is made up of galena, limestone and perhaps some siliceous or ferruginous flux; the whole is crushed to pass a screen with 3-mm. holes and moistened with 5 per cent of water. It is fed gradually into a bowl-shaped converter, 6.56 ft. in diameter, supported by trunnions attached to a truck. On the .bottom the converter has a grate with blast-inlet beneath. Long-wave short-pulse radar has been shown capable of exploring to distances of several hundred feet through massive, dry rock salt. Exploration distances of 30 to 60 ft through bituminous coal and massive limestone, respectively, have also been demonstrated with low-power experimental radar equipment in underground mines. Working ranges up to 250 ft in limestone and coal are considered feasible. Radar reflections should be produced by all large electrically contrasting objects such as fault gouge masses, wet shattered ground, metallic mineralization, adjacent mine workings (dry or flooded), and abandoned drill holes. It is believed that radar can locate such obstacles in advance of underground mining through all massive rocks of low free-water content, including many igneous and metamorphic rocks. Three years of studies and experiments in radar exploration through rocks are reported.

Shortly after the passage of the Taconite Amendment in Minnesota, several mining companies announced their intention to build new magnetite taconite plants and another announced its intention to augment present facilities. It is clear that Minnesota will enjoy an expanding magnetite taconite industry, but despite the fact that the reserves are large, eventually they will have to be supplemented by oxidized deposits. Furthermore, not all producers have magnetite taconite reserves. Due to the extensive oxidation of most of the western part of the Mesabi Range, there are no large blocks of unaltered magnetite taconite that lend themselves to open pit operations. Unless a commercial process can be developed to concentrate the oxidized, or so- called "nonmagnetic", taconite and semi-taconite, the existing mines operating in the western part of the range will be forced to shut down when the direct shipping, wash and gravity ores are depleted, or are no longer salable, because of their poor quality compared to high-grade pellets. KNOWN PROCESSES COSTLY The enormous reserves of the oxidized iron- bearing formation have offered a tantalizing challenge to metallurgists for many years. In fact, several processes for concentrating certain types of oxidized ore have been successful at both laboratory and pilot plant level, but to date no process for concentrating semitaconite or oxidized taconite has reached commercial fruition. Magnetic roasting, followed by low-intensity magnetic separation1, has shown considerable promise because the high iron recovery makes the ratio of concentration of many of the oxidized ores more favorable than that of magnetite taconite. However, the capital and operating costs are high and, in many cases, a high- grade concentrate cannot be made without resorting to flotation of the magnetic concentrate. Hence, most research groups are investigating alternate methods of concentration with the hopes of reducing the cost.

The investigations described were made on a portion of Clear Creek basin near Golden, Colo. (-4 portion of the area under survey is shown in Fig. 1. The photograph was taken in the vicinity of station No. 2 of Line 11.) Three principal purposes were in the minds of the investigators: 1. To repeat with modern, more sensitive and more reliable instruments magnetometric placer investigations previously made. 2. To disprove the recently advanced theory that deposits of the glacial period have no pronounced magnetic effects. 3. To develop in detail the theory of the magnetic effects produced by placer deposits. Six years ago, the first magnetic observations were published, which proved that it is possible to locate gold-bearing channels with relatively crude instruments.' Two years ago, K. C. Laylander published results obtained with similar instruments.2 The measurements of the latter were discussed by the senior author of this paper.3 At that time, however, the material available for such a discussion was somewhat scarce and not made with the most modern magnetic instruments, although very brilliant results were obtained. Therefore, the senior author felt that magnetic investigations should be made on very clear geologic conditions with the most modern instruments. Comparison of Magnetometers The junior author undertook this work in the spring of 1928. The magnetic field balances, for vertical and horizontal intensities, designed by Schmidt were used (Figs. 2 and 3). The scale value of these instruments was approximately 257 and 157, respectively. GRAIN boundary stress relaxation has been the subject of several investigations in recent years, but as yet the phenomenon is not well understood. One of the major difficulties has been the lack of a sufficient amount of data with which to evaluate any proposed mechanism. Little information is available on the effect of small amounts of substitutional solutes on grain boundary stress relaxation. It is with this important phase of the problem that this investigation is concerned. The influence of substitutional solutes on grain boundary stress relaxation has been recently investigated in copper by Pearson: and in aluminum by Dorn et al.' Pearson studied the effect of zinc, gallium, germanium, and arsenic on the relaxation peak of OFHC copper.* The pure OFHC copper decreased the peak intensity and a second peak appeared at a higher temperature. This latter peak was termed the alloy grain boundary peak. At the lowest binary concentration studied, approximately 1 atomic pct, the primary peak was almost completely obliterated. Pearson found that the activation energy calculated from the alloy grain boundary peak for all solutes, irrespective of the concentration, was 44,000 cal per mol. Pearson concluded that the increase in activation energy from 33 to 44 kcal per mol is not continuous but abruptly changes from the lower to the higher value. As no attempt was made to investigate the intermediate range of concentration and hence calculate the possible variation of the activation energy for the initial grain boundary peak, this conclusion is hardly valid. In contrast to these results, Dorn et al. studied the effect of zinc, silver, copper, germanium, and magnesium on the grain boundary stress relaxation of aluminum. No change in the energy of activation was observed for binary alloys of the flrst four solutes, but a linear increase was found for increasing concentration of magnesium. Saturation was not found up to the maximum of 1.6 atomic pct. The energies of activation were obtained by plotting the horizontal displacement of the dynamic modulus curve vs temperature for two vibrational frequencies. As the modulus is proportional to the square of the frequency, this requires the measurement of the torsional frequency over a range of temperature. However, the technique does not lead to an unambiguous interpretation of the grain boundary

THE important permanent-magnet alloys 15 years ago contained carbon and depended upon it for their permanent- magnet properties. In recent years great, advances have been made in a number of new alloys substantially free of carbon. These include Remalloy,l an alloy of iron, cobalt, and molybdenum, the various iron- nickel-aluminum alloys of the Mishima2 type, and the more recent Alnico V3 in which the best properties are developed by heat-treating in a magnetic field. The Mishima and the Alnico types of alloys are very brittle and after casting must be ground to size. This article describes a permanent-magnet material4 that can be machined as cast, and when handled with some care can be .rolled to thin sheet and drawn to fine wire. Optimum magnetic properties are developed by a simple heat- treatment, and at this time the ductility A of the alloy disappears. If the cast alloy is heat-treated without cold-working the magnetic energy product is about 1.0 X 106. This material is called Vicalloy I (pronounced vicalloy, V for vanadium, I for iron, and C for cobalt). When the alloy is first hot-worked and then considerably reduced in area by cold-swaging, drawing or grooved rolling, it is found that after heat-treatment the magnetic energy product measured in the direction of previous extension can be increased to 2.0 to 3.5 X l06. These higher values have been obtained only after reductions in area of 75 to 95 per cent, and since the material hardens considerably during working, the reduction ordinarily can be accomplished only in fine wires, although larger sizes can be reduced by the use of powerful machinery. When the material has been cold- worked in such a manner as to improve its energy product substantially, it is called Vicalloy II. Commercial use of Vicalloy has been made in the recording of speech. Tape 0.002 by 0.050 in. has been found superior in quality to all others tried, and is now used in the Western Electric Mirrorphone In a variety of forms Vicalloy I or II is useful in many laboratory instruments, and in experiments in which the sizes and shapes required cannot be obtained with the other more brittle permanent-magnet materials. In 1936, during a study of other age- hardening magnetic systems, it occurred to the author that some of the iron-cobalt-vanadium alloys might be suitable for permanent magnets. The proportions of iron, cobalt, and vanadium were varied and a range of alloys of particular interest was found, as shown by the indicated area in Fig. I. The limits of this range of com- position are 30 to 52 per cent iron, 36 to 62 per cent cobalt, and 4 to 16 per cent vanadium. The compositions indicated by points outside this area were also tested. Sutherland used an ion-pair adsorption model to derive the author's hy-drolytic pee-acid) adsorption equation for the contact bubble curves of Wark and Cox. To do so it was necessary to postulate that the sum of coverages of surface anion sites by the collector and depressant anions is practically unity. It is here shown that the free energy of Sutherland's postulated collector ion (x-)-depressant ion (OH-) exchange reaction (for no other than the OH- to compete with X-), namely EX + (OH-) Z SOH- + X-, is in some cases positive and X- should not even adsorb. Also, in many cases the (OH-) adsorption must be quite negligible even though the collector covers only about a sixth of the mineral surface at the threshold of air bubble contact. This, however, contradicts the postulate that permits one to derive the correct bubble contact eqwztion for the ion-pair model. Furthermore, the requirement for charge neutrality leads in the ion-pair model to the (impossible) constancy of the ratio @+)/(OH-) along a contact bubble curve in which pH may change by more than seven units. HYDROLYTIC ADSORPTION EQUATION Hydrolytic (free-acid or free-base) and ion-pair (H', X-, or R', OH-) adsorption models of the collector in metal sulfide and similar flotation systems are superficially alike and somewhat difficult to differentiate. This is because they yield, under seemingly valid assumptions, equivalent forms of the equations describing the distribution of the collector between the aqueous solution and the mineral surface. This has been discussed by the author and associates1-4 and more recently by Sutherland,' both for simple collector-mineral and for more complicated collector-depressant-mineral systems. In the hydrolytic adsorption model the equations describing the contact bubble curves of Wark and coxeJ7 are as follows :2 Here X is the collector anion, D- the depressant anion, 9, and On are the fractions of the free-acid sites S on the surface of the mineral covered by collector and depressant free acids, respectively, and @ is the fraction of uncovered sites. Kx is the free-acid collector dissociation equilibrium con- stant, K1 that for the free-acid collector adsorption, KD that for the free-acid depressant dissociation, and K2 the equilibrium constant for the free-acid depressant adsorption. Eqs. 1 to 5 yield upon simultaneous solution the result is the critical free-acid concentration for bubble contact in the absence of depressant-free acid. Eq. 8 expresses the conditions along a simple collector-mineral contact bubble curve for the case HD = 0, or V = 0. Last and Cook showed that Eq. 6 applies generally and with good accuracy in the collector-depressant-metal sulfide mineral systems. Inci-dentally, it has been shown by infrared absorption studies that in some cases the free-acid adsorption process splits out water.' In this case, Eq. 2 might be written SHOH + HX Z SHX + H20, with a similar equation replacing Eq. 4 for depressant-free acid-water exchange. This possibility does not change, however, the basic equations or considerations of the hydrolytic adsorption model. Indeed, this type of free acid-water exchange reaction was predicted for fluorite and iron ore flotation by oleic acid in the dry grinding and boiling processes.410

ZINC, manganese, and aluminum received attention at the two nonferrous metallurgy sessions at the Annual Meeting. L.P. Davidson, general superintendent of the rebuilt Monsanto zinc plant, described its operation, which reflects Polish practice and is really a combination of electrolytic, Waelz, and retort procedure. Briefly, it embraces leaching of roasted concentrate with sulphuric acid, electrolysis of sulphate solution using Tainton lead-silver anodes with ?goulac? added to the electrolyte, treatment of tailing in Waelz kilns, and retorting of the recovered zinc oxide, casting furnace dross and residues. Recovery is good, equipment and maintenance costs low. Ferrate zinc that might be lost in the electrolytic process appears to be recovered as oxide in the Waelz treatment.

IT has often been stated that the steel industry did no research or development work in the decades preceding 1920. If restricted to organized research on the quality and field of application of structural and engineering steels, this statement may be true. But the industry did conduct a vast amount of process research during this period, although some of the projects were not carried out as separate organized research programs. Securing a low cost of tonnage production was the sole problem receiving serious attention from the industry prior to 1920, and today this is still the major problem. Those in the industry deserve much commendation for the important increase in production capacity per dollar invested and for the markedly lowered cost of production. In recent years, a distinct change may be noted in the attitude of the steel industry toward research involving its product. With the advent of high-speed machinery both in the manufacturing and transportation industries, steel as a quality engineering material has come to the fore. In the past, high-quality carbon steels and alloy steels have been introduced over a period of years, largely at the insistence of the consumer and partly prompted by research carried out by those interested in the use of the alloys. The commercial introduction of these materials made slow progress.

FIRST of several sessions at the Annual Meeting devoted to mining methods was a joint program with the Coal Division devoted to the use of Diesels underground. Fred W. Stiefel, in the first paper, stressed the saving in original cost and in operation. Wm. B. Harris then presented the paper of which he was a joint author, and S. H. Ash stressed the poisonous nature of nitrous fumes from Diesel engines even in minute quantity. Determination is difficult but in exhaust gases they are present in amount two to five times that of carbon monoxide. Jay A. Carpenter, in the closing paper of the session, stated that state laws in general prohibit the use of Diesels underground, and that almost all mine inspectors are opposed.

THIS paper is the nineteenth of a series from the Aluminum Research Laboratories, presenting the results of the investigations of equilibrium relations in aluminum-base alloys made from electrolytically refined aluminum. In previous papers equilibrium) relations have been deter-mined and correlated for 12 binary systems. Equilibrium relations have also been determined for portions of the aluminum corners of three ternary systems (aluminum-iron-silicon, aluminum-magnesium-silicon and alu-minum-copper-magnesium). The object of the present paper and those to follow is to increase our knowledge of the aluminum corner of the more important ternary systems. In 1926 Dix and Keith? suggested a new method for designating the phases encountered in alloy systems. The system has been used to a very limited extent 1,2,3. The system has since been slightly modified and will be used in this and future papers. In the system as modified, a phase is designated by placing in parentheses the chemical symbols of the elements essential to the formation of that phase. The symbols in the parentheses are separated by dashes in order to clearly distinguish them from a chemical formula. Elements that are not necessary to the formation of the phase in question, but which may be present in solid solution, are not indicated in the designation. If two or more phases would have the same designation according to these rules, they are dis-tinguished by prefixing Greek letters, and are definitely identified by X-ray diffraction patterns.

BY this time almost everyone knows, in a general way, the corporate income distribution policies of the 1936 Revenue Act, and many of the practical problems arising there under. This article is not intended to be a technical discussion of that act by title, subtitle, section, or supplement, nor an analysis of inter- dependent sections of the various acts over many years woven on the fiscal loom f our Congressional machine. Such a discussion would require the spinning of a web of words too long for patience. Yet ,a general statement of the underlying plan of the 1936 Act, so far as it affects dividend policies, is perhaps useful.

A high-purity copper-zirconium alloy system was imesti-gated. The zirconium content of the alloys studied varied from 0.003 to 0.23 pet. The solid solubility of zirconium in copper and some physical and mechanical properties of the alloys have been determined. By proper heat treatment, Cu-Zr alloy can develop a high electrical conductivity and resistance to softening at temperatures up to 500°C (930°F). This combination of desirable properties makes this alloy superior, to other com-merzcrrl copper base alloys for- use in the electrical conductor field. DEMAND for high conductivity copper alloys that retain their mechanical properties at elevated temperatures is growing rapidly. At present, copper-base alloys such as copper-silver and copper-chromium are used where these characteristics are required. As an example, commutators in electric motors are often made of these alloys. However, the life at elevated temperature of commutators made of copper-silver alloys is much shorter than the life of the same part made of copper-chromium and copper-zirconium alloys. Copper-silver alloys are subject to creep and subsequent failure when the service temperature exceeds several hundred degrees centigrade. Use of copper-chromium alloys has been known for the past several years, but little information is available in the literature concerning the properties of alloys in the copper-zirconium alloy system. Some work had been directed toward determining the solubility of zirconium in copper as well as determining properties of the Cu-Zr alloys. These investigations have revealed the superior high-temperature and electrical conductivity properties of copper-zirconium alloys over copper-chromium alloys. The United States Metals Refining Co., Carteret, N. J. has recently produced OFHC R copper-zirconium alloys for experimentation and evaluation. Because OFHC R copper contains no appreciable oxygen, no harmful oxides are formed and the full benefit of Zr as an alloying addition is obtained. This paper describes the results of this work. It contains room-temperature and some high-temperature data which have been obtained after various processing techniaues. Actual elevated temperature properties are being determined and will be reported in a separate paper. Preliminary results obtained at elevated temperatures suggest that the Cu-Zr alloy is superior to other high conductivity copper-base alloys. WORK PROCEDURE The high-purity oxygen free (OFHC R) copper-zirconium alloys with zirconium content ranging from 0.003 to 0.23 pct were cast into 4-by 4-in. wirebars by both continuous casting and conventional casting methods. Zr was added in the form of a master alloy containing 30 pct Zr and 70 pct Cu. Castings were analyzed for zirconium and nine bars containing various amounts of zirconium were selected for this study. The results of analyses and the sample numbers are given in Table I. Typical analyses of OFHC R copper are also shown. The following properties were studied: A) Solid solubility of zirconium in copper. B) Effect of zirconium on properties of copper. C) Effect of combined working and heat treating on properties of Cu-Zr alloys. The solid solubility of zirconium in copper was determined by metallographic techniques. Specimens for this phase of the investigation were hot rolled at 900oC (1650oF) to 0.250-in. rod. The rolled rods were cut into 2/3-in. long specimens and solution annealed at 950 °C (1740°F), 980°C (1795 °F). and 1020 °C (1870 °F) for 6 hr and quenched in water. In order to find the solid solubility limits at lower temperatures, the homogenized specimens were reheated at various temperatures for 1 hr and quenched. The physical and mechanical properties were determined on 0.250 in. rod, 0.132- and 0.081-in. wires. The wires were cold drawn from the 0.250-in. rods after they were solution annealed at 980 °C (1795°F) and quenched in cold water. MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, In refining copper, the metal is melted down in a reverbera tory furnace in a more or less oxidizing atmosphere and then further subjected to an oxidizing smelting in order to eliminate the common impurities, most of which have a stronger affinity for oxygen than has copper. In these operations some of the copper is oxidized to cuprous oxide and dissolved by the metal bath. When the quantity of dissolved cuprous oxide has reached about 6 per cent, the metal is said to have been brought to " set-copper." A button-sample will show a depressed surface and, when broken, a single bubble at the apex of the depression; the fracture will be brick-red and dull. It is essential to carry the oxidation to this point in order to know that the impurities have been oxidized as far as it is possible under the given working-conditions. Nearly all the cuprous oxide of the set-copper is now reduced to the metallic state by poling, when "tough-pitch" copper will be obtained. A button-sample will show a flat surface. Upon breaking, it will be found that the former bubble has disappeared and that the fracture has become rose-colored and shows a silky luster. The quantity of cuprous oxide allowed to remain in the copper will vary with the impurities still present in the metal and with the degree of pitch that it is desired to reach. It is essential for the general physical and the mechanical properties of the resulting copper that such impurities as arsenic, antimony, bismuth, lead shall be present in the oxidized state, as they are

FREQUENTLY in using a thermo-electric pyrometer for measuring the temperature of a furnace, a hole is drilled at the back or side of the furnace, through which is introduced the tube containing the thermo-couple. At times the couple is left almost where it drops, for the reason that it soon becomes too hot to be handled easily, and the space at the back or side of the furnace may be so small and uncomfortably hot that an easy and accurate adjustment is nearly impossible. In order to overcome this clumsy and unscientific method of using the thermo-electric pyrometer, I designed an adjustable stand, to hold the clay or quartz tube unclosing the platinum and plati-num-rhodium leads that constitute the couple of the Le Chatelier thermo-electric pyrometer. This stand also allows an easy and rapid adjustment of position to varying heights and angles, as may be desired for special reading. This stand is illustrated in Fig. 1. The couple in the tube might be of better service if the tube were held a little higher above the charge in a roasting-dish, changing the height and angle if desired. The stand, made of 1.5-in, water-pipe and mounted on casters, is heavy enough so it cannot be tipped over easily. It is adjusted to any position, and has a universal clamp which holds the clay or quartz protecting-tube. To avoid disturbing the wires of the couple at the cold junction each time the tube is moved, the cooling-bottle sets in a wire basket so placed that it moves forward or back with the couple. OF the many categories into which scientific knowledge has been arbitrarily divided, the one that has proved most applicable in our attempts to gain an insight into the details of steelmaking processes is physical chemistry. To the young metallurgist who has only recently survived a college course in this subject, the application of its principles to reactions in liquid steel should not be difficult. The many excellent textbooks of physical chemistry1 provide ample material on the principles of this subject for the student of steelmaking processes; yet with- out exception those texts draw the greater part of their illustrative material from room-temperature data. It is the purpose of this chapter to provide a concise review of the principles of physical chemistry that have proved useful in studies of steelmaking and at the same time to present some of the data that are essential to the application of physical chemistry to reactions at high temperatures. Certain parts of physical chemistry require rather formidable mathematics for their complete development but in the main those applications in which we are here interested can be ex- pressed in fairly simple terms. Many of the equations are logarithmic, and we shall use the symbols In X and log X to represent respectively the natural and the common logarithm of X. The two are related by In X = 2.303 log X. THE 139th meeting of the Institute will be held Feb. 17-20, in the Engineering Societies Building, New York. The annual business meeting will be held on Feb. 18 at 10 a. m., and no technical sessions will be scheduled at that time, so that all members may participate in the election of officers, hear the presentation of the annual reports of officers and committees and discuss any matter which they may care to bring up at that time. The annual dinner will be held at the Conlmodore Hotel on the evening of Feb. 20, and the usual good time is promised. Arrangements for this and other social features of the meeting are, as usual, in hands of the New York Sec- tion, of which the chairman this year, Ralph M. Roosevelt, has a well-established reputation earned as president of the Zinc Institute, as host.
