Today more than ever, there is an increased demand for higher plant production capacities and efficiencies to offset the increasing costs for labor and materials. Plants involved in processing large volumes of bulk materials are particularly interested in more efficient material handling systems to (1) reduce labor and maintenance costs, (2) improve blending of non-uniform raw material feed to processing facilities, (3) improve blending of finished bulk materials from storage. DragScraper systems are being used effectively for handling a variety of bulk materials in both indoor and outdoor storage. Materials being handled include ores, chemicals, coke, clay, and stone, to name a few. Handling capacities these machines can provide vary from a few tons to over 1500 tons per hour. The basic components of a DragScraper machine consist of a bottomless Crescent scraper, a two or three-drum DragScraper hoist assembly including gas, diesel, or electric power unit, operating cables, guide blocks, and either fixed or mobile head and tail structures. They are presently available in sizes through 15 cubic yards, for operating spans up to 1000 feet.

Liquid carbon dioxide can be used as a replacement for organic solvents in the extraction of anionic platinum group metal complexes from an aqueous phase. However, because conventional extractant-metal complexes are not soluble in liquid carbon dioxide, this can be achieved only if highly carbon dioxide-soluble extractants are developed. For example, trioctylamine-gold chloride is not soluble in liquid carbon dioxide, although trioctylamine is CO2 soluble. The novel CO2-soluble extractants presented in this paper have a CO2-philic fluorinated tail to enhance solubility and a conventional amine head group for extraction of metals. Both the extractant and the extractant-metal complex are soluble at ambient temperature at pressures from 7 to 35 MPa. Efficiency factors as high as 2.23 have been measured using 1,1,2-trichlorotrifluoroethane (TCTFE), a low pressure screening liquid for carbon dioxide, indicating that these compounds will strongly bind the metal chloride. For example, 84% of Pt-chloride was extracted into TCTFE using a 3.5:1 ratio of a double¬tailed fluoroalkyl amine extractant: metal chloride. An 88% recovery of Pt-chloride into high-pressure liquid carbon dioxide was achieved using the same extractant at a 3.5:1 ratio. Therefore, it appears possible to replace organic solvents with liquid carbon dioxide during the extraction of platinum chlorides if highly carbon dioxide-soluble extractants agents are employed.

The purpose of this paper is to describe a data-acquisition system for mine ventilation surveys that was developed by the author. The system is composed of "off-the- shelf" components integrated through a custom- designed software package to form a user- friendly data acquisition system capable of operating as an unmanned base station or as an operator-triggered roving station. To demonstrate the applicability of the developed system, the author will present data collected during an experimental ventilation survey, which was performed in one of the underground coal mines of eastern Kentucky.

In the 1980's the Canadian surface mining industry was confronted by declining competitiveness in the face of low cost foreign producers and alternative materials. Low metal prices undermined profits for many mining companies. Restructuring, rationalization, capacity reduction, technology transfer, as well as favourable currency rates and higher commodity prices, helped revitalize the industry by the close of the decade. Now in the 1990's, however, the need to improve competitiveness for profitability has re-emerged in greater intensity. In the current climate it is considered that there are three strategies available to industry to ensure profitability: continued rationalization and restructuring; optimization of operating practice; and technology development and transfer.

Theoretical investigation and laboratory experimentation have shown a great potential for jet fan ventilation in mines. Jet fans, also called induction fans due to the induction effect of the fluid jet to ventilate headings, may have particular application in remote-controlled production operations. This paper summarizes ongoing research using a scaled laboratory model. The model uses water as a fluid medium and simulates a typical 25m long heading of 1.5mx6m cross-section. The effects of various nozzle positions and designs have been investigated by using still photography as a tool for flow visualization. It is also found that the use of jets in combination with line curtains has enhanced the overall ventilating effect in the model entry.

A cutter vibration monitoring system is described which would map seam strata non-uniformities to permit guidance within the seam. An extremely simple and rugged transducer is used which is compatible with conventional cutters and cutter replacement practices, and believed to be suited to the mining environment. Laboratory tests show that the system can detect bedding planes in otherwise homogeneous material. A data display system which would employ the human operator's natural pattern recognition skill and judgement will be developed, Intended for remote control applications in general, the system is of direct interest for today's continuous excavators in coal or in any other machine excavated bedded deposit.

Rockbursts and rockfalls cause very large safety and productivity losses in underground mines. One of the major unsolved problems of safe, economical rock support in underground mining has been that of maintaining anchorage during dynamic rock loading conditions or seismic related occurrences. It is recognized that the large displacements and high strain rates in excavation walls and underground structures cannot be countered by increasing the strength of stiff rock-reinforcing systems but must be accommodated by introducing yieldability into the support elements. This paper introduces a low cost yieldable support system which provides viable solutions to dynamic support loading. Such system should not only provide a feasible and more effective rock mass stabilization strategy but improve mine safety and reduce losses.

Blind drilled shafts are becoming increasingly popular as a secondary and sometimes primary means of ventilation. This is particularly true in the Appalachian coalfields. Some reasons for the rebirth of blind shafts are economics, timeliness, safety characteristics and their inherent independence from underground operations. Blind drilling has had limited use in hard rock and tunneling ventilation. Advances in cutters, bit design, equipment and lining systems have made blind drilled shafts the shaft construction technique of choice for ventilation specialists. History of blind drilling Blind drilling's roots include the Nevada test site, the coalfields of Appalachia and Germany, and the uranium mines of Arizona. Early technology was developed using a variety of equipment mainly of oilfield origin. Shafts completed by oilfield equipment ranged from the shallow 1.5 and 1.8 m (5 and 6 ft) lined shafts on the Nevada test site to two 3 m (10 ft) lined, 222 m (730 ft) deep shafts in Alberta for heavy oil development. Several of these shafts were completed to extraordinary depths. The record, completed in 1969, is a 2.28-m-diam (90-in.-diam), 1875-m (6150-ft) deep shaft, located in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska.

Investment in minerals development usually entails big financial outlays. which will remain at risk for a long time before the venture can begin to generate a return cash flow. Before 'committing himself to such a venture the investor would be wise to carefully examine the possible consequences of his exposure to risk. In this context risk is defined in multiple terms, which relate the magnitude of possible loss with the probability that such loss may occur--normally the probability will decrease as the amount of possible loss increases. The analysis of risk is an essential component of the decision making process, especially so in the case of low grade high tonnage mining ventures where a very real possibility exists that future unfavorable circumstances may lead to losses that could cripple or ruin even the richest corporation. Wells (1979) postulates a rationale for making the investment decision under uncertainty based on the comparison of two independent risk criteria: 1) the risk inherent in the venture represented by the negative portion of the cumulative distribution of the net present value (NPV), as derived by a stochastic evaluation procedure, 2) the limits of risk the decision maker is willing to accept, taking account of the financial capacity-of the 'firm to absorb various levels of future cash shortfall should the venture prove disappointing. The chance the investor would be prepared to accept can be expected to decrease as the amount of the possible shortfall increases. The limits of acceptable risk are-defined by a curve called the "LL-curve" which can be directly compared with the cumu¬lative NPV curve. A positive investment decision is implied if the limits of acceptable risk are not exceeded.

The paper presents models of auxiliary ventilation systems with leaky ducts and algorithms for calculations of pressure loss, air leakage, and volume flow ratio and pressure fans. Two basic models are discussed: 1st model for a duct with leakage through the flange joints; 2nd model for a duct with an equivalent longitudinal aperture. The present analytical system has been successfully applied to developing of computer software named DAVentS. A. sample problem is used to illustrate efficiency and accuracy of DAVents software in solving most common problems in process of designing AVS.

More than 80 million metric tons of fly ash is produced annually in the U.S. as coal combustion by-product. Fly ash can be converted to value-added products if unburned carbon is reduced to less than 2.5%. However, most of fly ash is currently landfilled as waste due to lack of efficient purification technologies to separate unburned carbon from fly ash. A rotary triboelectrostatic separator has been developed and patented recently at the University of Kentucky with unique features. Several fly ash samples have been used to understand the effects of major process parameters on the separation performance. The results show that compared to existing triboelectrostatic separators, the rotary triboelectrostatic separator has significant advantages in particle charging efficiency, solids throughput, separation efficiency, applicable particle size range. In recent years a number of data processing and analytical techniques have proven to be useful to engineers and geologists in various segments of the mineral industries. Petroleum companies were among the first to utilize the computer to store well data files and to analyze that data for exploration purposes. A few years later, metal mining companies began to apply the same basic computer methods to problems in mineral exploration, ore reserve evaluation, and open pit mine planning. Because of the increasing complexity of planning for coal mines and land reclamation, a case study was undertaken to evaluate the usefulness of computer techniques to assist mining engineers and geologists in mapping coal deposits, evaluating coal reserves, strip mine planning and land management. The data used in the study was provided by the Illinois State Geologic Survey. This paper describes some of the results of that study. First, considerations for the development of a computer data base for coal deposits are presented. Next, a series of analytical techniques for processing the data is described. Finally, the case study is presented to illustrate how the coal data base and the analytical techniques could be used in actual practice.

This paper summarizes the process development behind the design of three different types of paste fill plants at operating Canadian hard rock mines. Each application has a unique paste backfill mix and process which utilizes the materials economically available to the mine site. The different plants produce paste fill composed of base metal tailings, a blend of recovered disposal pond tailings fines and alluvial sand, gold ore tailings, and a blend of gold ore tailings and alluvial sand. This work has led to the joint development by Inco and GL&V Ontario of the compaction storage mechanism for the de-watering of mill tailings to a paste consistency.

If Campbell County, Wyoming were an independent nation, it would rank fifth in the world among countries with known coal reserves. Only the United States, Russia, mainland China and West Germany would have greater volumes available. Not too many years ago that statement would not have seemed important, because oil and natural gas had become our nation's principal fuels. Western coal deposits, particularly those of the Powder River Basin in Montana and Wyoming, and which underlie virtually all of Campbell County, were largely unknown. But recently, in response to the three-pronged stimulus of vanishing gas reserves, rising petroleum prices, and clean environment statutes, these vast deposits have been delineated and have become, in the minds of many, indispensable to our goal of energy independence. Not only does western coal lie in thick seams near the surface where it can be mined in huge quantities at low cost, but also it possesses another coveted attribute in this age of environmentalism: low sulfur content. At Burlington Northern we count ourselves at the forefront of those who believe this coal is essential to any hope for the government's "Project Independence." But to that belief we add another article of faith. We are convinced the economics of unit train delivery of this incredibly immense resource make it the only transportation system that can help us achieve energy self-sufficiency in this country.

The Golden Jubilee Mine in South Africa is the first mine in the Western World to introduce resin-in­pulp technology for the recovery of gold from a cyanide-leached slurry. Located in the Eastern Transvaal region of the country, the plant processes approximately 375 metric tons• of ore per day, of which over 90 per cent is mined in an open pit adjacent to the metaflurgical plant, while the remaining 5 to 10 per cent is trucl<ed in from two small high-grade deposits, located about 10 kilometers from the plant. The gold grade in the open pit is about 1 git, while the values m the two high-grade deposits range between 5 and 15 git. At the current treatment rate, the proven reserves m the three locations will last about another 10 years. Early testwork indicated that the ore was not well suited to conventional filtration processing or to heap leaching because of its high cfay content, and that carbon-m-pulp (CIP) would probably prove to be the most viable metallurgical route. Tcstwork to establish the feasibility of CIP for this application was carried out at Mintek in 1985. This worl<, which was based on batch-leaching and carbon-loading tests, indicated that CIP was technically feasible, but that both the rate of gold loading and the gold-loading capacity of the carbon were inferior to those obtained with Witwatersrand ores. The poor adsorption characteristics of the carbon were attributed to the abnormally high concentration of natural organic compounds (humates and fulvates) in the ore. Batch tests were therefore also carried out with strong-base resins, since resins are known (1] to be far less susceptible to organic fouling than is activated carbon. The results were very promising, and pointed to fast kinetics and a high loading capacity. (Fig. 1 ). Notwithstanding these findings, it was decided to recover gold with activated carbon at Golden Jubilee Mine because the CIP process was, by then, well established in South Africa and elsewhere in the world, whereas resin-in-pulp (RIP) was unproven technology. The r>lant was commissioned in September 1986 and, for 18 months, operated in a carbon-in-leach (CIL) configuration, i.e. with a total of . six leach tanks, the last four of which contained activated carbon. As could have been predicted from the laboratory results, the performance of the CIL plant was generally poor, low gold loadings on the carbon (less than 1500 git) and high losses of soluble gold (0.2 to 0.3 p.p.m.) bemg characteristic of the operation. A number of innovative techniques exist for solving heap leaching problems in special situations. Some of these techniques have been successfully applied and others await an opportunity for application. Discussions in this paper will deal with gold heap leaching under severe thermal conditions, in tropical rainfall circumstances, in the absence of fresh water, and in other situations removed from the ordinary. CLIMATIC CONSIDERATIONS The success or failure of precious metal dissolution operations may be strongly dependent upon proper attention to the influence of climate. A few examples are given in the following paragraphs.

To find out if there are any potential savings in "in-the-wall haulage for open pits," the Swedish companies ASEA and Kiruna-Truck in 1984 gave us financial support to study this solution in more detail. In the study, the use of in-the-wall haulage was studied for three hypothetical open pits with different sizes and shapes. Annual ore production rates also varied. A part of this thorough study was published by the Swedish Mining Research Foundation (see Report F 8444, "The Use of Electric Trucks and In-the-Wall Haulage in Open-Pit Mining," in Swedish with an English Summary). Although in-the-wall haulage is of interest in some open pits, the local terrain is important for profitability. The authors do not think in-the-wall haulage is of any major interest for the mining industry. The following is a summary of some of the author&apos;s findings. To place the haul road in the wall is not of interest in open pits with declining metal contents in the bedrock. In such mines, the volumes from the haul roads will not yield revenues. The cost per m3 for an underground haul road is much higher than for a haul road in the pit. This means that it is only of interest to place the haul road in the wall when mining gets deeper than about 50 m (165 ft). In-the-wall haul roads will reduce flexibility in the pit, and it will make necessary the use of smaller equipment with lower productivity and higher costs per ton. As Hustrulid, et al. show (Table 4), excavation savings of material hauled are very low, $0.10 to $0.25/t (0.09 to 0.27 per st). The extra operating cost, due to lower productive equipment, will normally be much higher and thus destroy the whole idea with in-the-wall haulage. If electric trucks are profitable for in-the-wall haulage, it is normally also profitable to use electric trolley assist for trucks on the haul road in the pit. But the profitability of using electric power is different in different countries, and depends on the relation between the cost for electric power and diesel fuel. In the US, diesel fuel is inexpensive compared with electricity, but in a country like Sweden, diesel fuel is much more expensive. In most open pits, the trucks have to move a considerable distange from the loader until they reach a final haul road in the wall. A trolley line along such temporary haul roads will be exposed to flyrock. It is normally less expensive to perform rock support from the open pit than from underground ramps in the wall. In Fig. 8, Hustrulid et al. gives the impression that the underground haul roads will be very close to each other. This is seldom the case. Figure 1 shows a haul road in the wall. The haul road passes through each cross-section only once. Arranging a reliable dewatering and rock support system from only one underground ramp is probably impossible. Many more drifts are therefore necessary. In our report, we also studied what would happen if the final pit slope is increased by 5°, using underground drifts in the wall. Our conclusion was that, the extra cost for drifts, rock support, pumps, etc. destroys the whole idea, and that it was better to accept a higher stripping ratio with the haul road in the pit and to use conventional low-cost open pit equipment. Finally, we think it is would be difficult to try to reduce the safety factor when determining the slope angle by moving the haul road in the wall. Minimizing the risk for pit wall collapse is also important with in-the-wall haulage, primarily because men and equipment will be working in the pit, but also to guarantee many accesses between the pit and the haul road in the wall.

The Green River formations in the Western U.S.A. contains vast amounts of petroleum reserves in oil shale deposits. Exploitation of this petroleum reserve calls for large scale mining of the oil shale. Applicable mining methods include conventional underground mining using roan and pillar, sub-level caving and block caving; underground insitu retorting of oil shale and open pit mining. Roam and pillar mining offers one of the most economic methods of underground mining of oil shale. A 2.4 x l09 litre per year (50,000 barrels per day) of crude oil production would require a daily oil shale production of 100,000 tomes per day from underground operations. For this large production, a highly mechanized room and pillar mining muld utilize large capacity diesel equipment such as 85 tonne trucks and 8m front end loaders. The total air requirements of an oil shale mining operations can. be as high as 28443/s. Ventilation planning for such a large scale underground mining operation presents a formidable task. The major objectives of providing ventilation air to underground workings are to dilute airborne .dust and diesel fumes to harmless levels, and to insure that the mine environment is compatible with the health and safety of mine personnel. Regulation of air velocities and air temperatures is a major factor in mine environmental control. Colorado State law requires that a minimum of 0.047m3/s of fresh air be supplied for each kW of diesel power operating underground. Additionally, 0.047m3/s of fresh air must be supplied for each underground employee, and a minimum air velocity of 0.15m/s must be maintained in all working places. It is desirable to exceed this minimum velocity in order to prevent stratification of ventilation air. Moreover, Colorado law also stipulates the maximum allowable concentration of noxious gases mine air, below: ? C02 - 0.5% by volume, 5,000 ppm. ? CO - 0.005% by volume, 50 ppm. ? Oxides of Nitrogen - 0.0025% by volume, 25ppm. ? Nitrogen Dioxide 0.005% by volume, 5 ppm. This paper examines ventilation requirements for the underground mine, with respect to air quality requirements and distribution of air in mine workings in light of the above regulations. Analyses were made for sane typical mining plans to determine airflow resistance or pressure drops and fan horsepower requirements. In addition, the possible occurrence of high concentrations of toxic gases, was examined. Expected temperature levels in mine workings were approximated.

By way of background. it is important to keep in mind that the information presented in this paper relates specifically to synthetically produced precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) fillers. Natural calcium carbonate fillers manufactured by grinding limestone, marble and chalk, though having similar chemical and physical analyses to PCCs, normally contribute somewhat different performance properties in paint, paper and polymer systems. Many factors have been cited and numerous theories have been proposed for the observed differences. Particle size parameters, surface chemistry and particle morphology are the items most frequently mentioned. A discussion of this subject is beyond the scope of this paper.

Coal cleaning with traditional magnetic separation usually yields unsatisfactory results because minerals associated with coal, such as quartz, clay, pyrite and calcite, are weak-or non-magnetic. Magnetic reagent technology is a new mineral processing technology with the capability to enhance the magnetic property of minerals selectively. This reagent can be adsorbed selectively on minerals through the control of surface chemistry and, thus, result in selective magnetic enhancement. The application of this technology on coal cleaning has been experimentally demonstrated. Good separation results can be obtained at low to medium magnetic field strength. Comparison with other processing technologies is included.
