"MOTIVATION Tunnel construction companies must keep costs low, finish projects in less time and still meet the high quality and safety standards. Therefore, their main goal is always to optimize the tunnel excavation process. Traditional geodetical methods are used since more than 100 years to ensure an exact breakthrough of a tunnel. Evolving sensors, sensor fusion and increasing computation resources opened new fields of application for geodetic solutions in tunneling. These solutions offer new ways to reduce costs and risks in tunneling. INTRODUCTION Nowadays in tunneling, geodetical measurement methods are not only used for guidance, but also for various other applications. This paper gives an overview about where geodetical measurements are used today and highlights their benefits for safety and costs aspects. Furthermore, advanced solutions are introduced. In progressive projects, they have already become state of the art technology and are in use daily. STANDARD GEODETICAL MEASUREMENT APPLICATIONS In drill & blast tunnel construction processes, there are many standard geodetical applications used in the different construction phases, each having different requirements regarding accuracy. In the excavation construction stage, guidance tasks and setting-out of various positions is done by the foremen. Thanks to simplified measurement tools, the foremen are enabled to carry out these measurement tasks themselves without requiring deep surveying knowledge. In contrast, deformation analysis and network measurement campaigns need sophisticated planning and a profound education in surveying. Therefore, these tasks are carried out by surveyors. Profile control and as-built documentation is required in each construction phase. Depending on the requirements of the project, this task can be carried out either by the foremen or a specialized surveyor. Table 1 provides an overview over typical surveying tasks in an underground project including information about who is doing the job and the according accuracy requirements. Facing lower gold prices, gold mine operators throughout the world are seeking ways to reduce costs for treating refractory sulfide ores. Many gold mines, currently producing oxide ores, have underlying refractory sulfide deposits and the operators could extend the mine life by processing these sulfides. Fortunately, oxidation technologies for refractory ores need not be complex nor costly. GeoBiotics, Inc. has developed heap biooxidation technologies (GEOCOAT™) for treatment of refractory gold ores and concentrates. GEOCOATTM uses simple low cost unit operations common to heap leaching of gold and copper ores. The cost effectiveness and flexibility of GEOCOAT™ heap biooxidation allows mining companies to expand operations to include refract01y ore. In addition, GEOCOAT™ can be utilized to supplement or replace existing oxidation processes such as roasting, autoclaving, or agitated tank biooxidation, and to treat a lower resource grade than is currently economic. The GEOCOAT™ technology involves coating sulfide concentrates onto sized support rocks and biooxidizing the sulfides in a heap configuration. After biooxidation the concentrate is stripped from the support rock, neutralized and leached in conventional cyanidation facilities. Ashanti Goldfields Company Ltd. (AGC) produces over 885,000 ounces of gold per year from oxide and refractory ores at its Obuasi operations in Ghana. Refractory flotation concentrates are treated in roasters and in the world's largest stirred tank biooxidation facility. In August 1998, AGC and GeoBiotics jointly constructed and operated a field demonstration heap of the GEOCOATTM process at the Obuasi operations. The heap contained I 082 tonnes of support rock and 125 tonnes of concentrate. The heap was approximately 19 meters square at the base and 3.8 meters high, and ran for 88 days after which the concentrate was reclaimed. Average gold recovery after biooxidation was 91.5% with a NaCN consumption of 8.6 kg/t. Baseline gold recovery by direct cyanidation of the concentrate was 53.8%.

Dredging can be traced to early times where it may have been derived by the Phoenicians prior to the 4th century B.C. The first tangible design drawings of a bucket ladder (BL) dredge can be found in the collections of Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), which he produced when he was attempting to create better methods of channel and port dredging. The perfection of the system did not commence until after the invention of the steam engine in the early 1800's; providing the impetus to progress from man-powered mud mills, horse drawn along polders or dikes in the Netherlands, England, France and Germany, to steam-driven. In the 1860's following the various gold rushes in the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, Siberia and South America, with placers in particular, efforts were begun to apply mechanization to achieve deeper digging. There is a recording of a dredge being installed to mine gold in Montana in the 1860's but did not include a processing system. Then in the 1880's in New Zealand, some practical engineers developed a system that is said to be the first bucket ladder mining (BL/M) dredge for mining gold placers. In studies of the New Zealand gold dredging experience, it is estimated that some 500 dredges were built to mine gold between the 1880's and 1942. Digital systems have been employed in industry as an aid in process evaluation and control for about 20 years. The earlier systems were quite simple and did little more than periodically scan a multitude of process variables, perhaps comparing them to alarm limits, and print out the results. As time passed, the needs of industry and the imagination of process engineers became more demanding. Rather than perform only alarm checking and logging, operating guides were generated to help the operator gain optimum performance from the process. Eventually, systems were entrusted with the job of manipulating the set points of the local analog control loops in a (DDAC) digitally directed analog control mode. Today digital systems are used to gather all-the process information, including both analog and digital variables; to make the necessary data manipulations; and to control the process end elements in a (DDC) direct digital control mode. During these years of transition from the very simplest systems to the complex systems of today, the demands upon the system engineer have been every increasing. The process engineer has required, among other things, more computational ability at high speeds, faster input and output rates, greater flexibility, better communication facilities (man-machine interface), (process oriented software), and finally, greater reliability at lower cost.

Many unique ventilation problems have been faced as Avery Island Mine's large openings have been mined. High humidity of outside air combines with the hygroscopic salt to create a corrosive atmosphere. Massive rooms preclude routine use of brattices to direct air flow to the working faces. Large amounts of explosives are consumed in single blasts. Resulting concussion pounds air control structures and ANFO ignition creates large amounts of nitrogen dioxide in single rooms. Geologic constraints confine new shafts and slopes to areas thought to be free of potential ground water hazards. Dust control techniques are limited by dry product demanded by customers. The Avery Island Mine's ventilation system has evolved to deal practically with the conditions and to dependably provide fresh air to the miners. International Salt Company's Avery Island Salt Mine, a multiple level room and pillar operation, has been mined steadily since about 1900. It is known as one of the "Five Island" salt dome mines of South Louisiana's Gulf Coast. Production from the area places Louisiana first in United States rock salt mined tonnage, according to the United States Bureau of Nines, 1982 (1). International Salt Company is a major force in U.S. salt production, as it also operates mines in Detroit, Michigan; Cleveland, Ohio; and Retsof, New York; a solar salt facility in Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles; and a solution mining plant at Watkins Glen, New York.

Atlantic Cement Company's new multimillion dollar, 10,000,000 barrel per year cement plant went into full operation in February, 1962, bringing into reality a new concept in the distribution of Portland cement. The Cerro and Newmont Mining Corporations, well established in the mineral extraction and dressing industry, backed the venture. To take advantage of the, economics inherent in single production units of large capacity, it was necessary to first find a market' capable of absorbing such large quantities. Cement can be economically shipped by rail and truck about 200 miles. Beyond' that radius from the producing facility the freight costs become prohibitive. No single marker area within that radius exists which could absorb such a large volume of cement. However, water transportation provides a relatively inexpensive method of transporting bulk products many times over such a distance. Thus, it was decided to locate the producing facility near a deep water port which had ready access both to the Atlantic Ocean and, just as important, a good source of raw material. An extensive feasibility study was made and the site at Ravena, New York on the Hudson River near Albany was chosen. Here, vast quantities of limestone in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains are found within a short distance of-the deep-water Hudson River.

The Carlin Trend is a 60 km (38 mi) long northwest alignment of epithermal, sediment-hosted, disseminated gold deposits. Collectively, these orebodies contained more than 620 t (20 million troy ounces) of gold. The Carlin deposit, located near the center of the Trend, has become the "type" deposit of this class. There are, however, significant differences between the individual deposits. Six subdistricts can be distinguished, based upon geographic, structural, lithologic, alteration, mineralization style, and geochemical characteristics. They are, from northwest to southeast, the Bootstrap, Bluestar-Goldstrike, Lynn, Maggie Creek, Rain and Bullion (Railroad) subdistricts. Regional Geologic Setting The Carlin District is located centrally within the Great Basin Geologic Province. Host rocks for the deposits include sedimentary units that range in age from Ordovician to Mississippian, as well as a Jurassic-Cretaceous granodiorite stock. During the Early Paleozoic, the area that is now Nevada lay along the western margin of the North American continent. A westward-thickening wedge of sedimentary units was deposited offshore in a eugeoclinal basin; these vary from continental shelf carbonates toward the east to fine-grained siliceous clastic and cherty units to the west. Tectonic activity associated with the Antler Orogeny in Late Devonian to Early Mississippian time resulted in the eugeoclinal Western Assemblage rocks being thrust as much as 140 km (90 mi) eastward over time-equivalent transitional to miogeoclinal Eastern Assemblage rocks along the Roberts Mountains Thrust fault system. The leading edge of the Roberts Mountains Thrust plate formed the emergent Antler highland from which siliceous clastic sediment, eroded from the overriding eugeoclinal rocks, was shed eastward into the adjacent foreland basin. Erosional products derived from the overthrust plate are termed the Overlap Assemblage.

As part of a program to address the long-term need to ensure adequate supplies of domestic phosphate raw materials, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has conducted considerable research on dolomitic phosphate rock beneficiation. The discovery that alkyl diphosphonic acids act as phosphate mineral depressants led to the development of several processes involving a carbonate flotation step for the effective beneficiation of these problem ores. Most recently, a partial deoiling process in which the reagent consumption is greatly reduced has been developed. The reduction is achieved because part of the initial feed is beneficiated without passing through the separate carbonate flotation step. Using this method, a phosphate product containing 30.6-30.9% P2O5 and 0.7-0.8% MgO was obtained from a Florida dolomitic phosphate pebble that contained about 23% P2O5 and 2.0% MgO. The P205 recovery was 80.8-86.5%.

In an effort to economically and efficiently enhance the erosion control aspects of present surface coal mine reclamation practices, the US Bureau of Mines has recently completed a two-phase research program wherein irrigation strategies and equipment developed under the first phase were field tested on three surface coal mine sites. The fundamental basis for the use of irrigation as a reclamation tool is to provide the plant moisture requirements as a supplement to prevailing natural precipitation, and thereby support the natural growth of drought-hardy native vegetation. Portable solid-set irrigation equipment and several irrigation strategies were tested on large 6-ha (15-acre) sites in Montana, Wyoming, and New Mexico. Results of these tests will be presented which include daily irrigations, precipitation levels, soil moistures, climatic data, and density cover and biomass of the native plants.

Column flotation and selective agglomeration are promising advanced physical cleaning processes that can be developed for preparing premium quality coal-water slurry fuel from coal fines. Such a fuel could either replace oil or natural gas in certain industrial and utility boilers or else could be burned in advanced combustors currently under development. These applications require coal cleaned to sulfur and ash contents below 258 g/GJ and 430 - 860 g/GJ (0.6 lb/million Btu and 1 - 2 lb/million Btu), respectively, to meet clean air emission requirements. A highly loaded slurry must be produced in order to avoid derating the boilers, and the total cost of the fuel must be below $2.37/GJ ($2.50/million Btu) in order to penetrate the market by the turn of the century. Achieving these technical and economic goals depend critically on the selection of suitable feed coals. This paper describes the identification and evaluation of 18 coals and final selection of six coals from different regions of the United States as potential feedstock for preparation of premium fuel. The work is being performed under a cost-shared DOE project.

A new technique, prompt neutron activation probe (PNAP), for analyzing phosphate rock slurry in-situ was evaluated both in the laboratory and at the plant. The technique yielded a high precision in the analysis of Ca, Si and H using 252Cf source. Low accuracy of the direct measurement of P using 241Am/Be in the laboratory tests was attributed to the interference of rare earth elements present in the samples, particularly Gadolinium. No significant effect of variables such as solids loading, particle size distribution, and flotation reagents was observed on the probe performance. The probe can detect the compositional changes of the feed, tailings and the concentrate streams in the plant.

Generally, production planning is concerned with the best use of fixed resources to determine a production schedule for one or more production units supplying one or more markets. Production scheduling determines when each production unit will be used and its production level. However, the production scheduling problems are intimately associated with the location of existing or new production units and processing facilities. Normally, mine location allows only a limited choice; processing plant types and locations are considerably more flexible. This paper presents a generalized multiperiod MIP model as an aid in determining the mine production schedule and the processing plant types and location to satisfy multiple markets. A brief description of MIP and how it has been applied in the mineral and other industries is discussed. A complete description of the model with an application to a coal preparation plant system is presented.

Various countries around the world have testing and manufacturing standards in place for steel cord belting. These standards are very comprehensive in what they allow the end user to specify, however, their practical significance in terms of belt life is more difficult to quantify. Such testing standards will be briefly reviewed in this paper in relation to the implication for end user expectancy. Since there is no US standard of manufacture, the end user is left with writing their own specifications. In addition, such standards do not address the effect on belt life of manufacturing faults, such as cord plane buckles, or lateral cord movement. Some new technology used to test steel cord belting will be described as an aid to both manufacturer and end user. This paper is not written to "break new ground" in computer applications; it is just a treatment of how an operating metal mine utilizes a mainframe computer for planning, analyzing, and reporting on the ventilation and cooling systems. The Unisys mainframe computer at the mine site is used in programs that analyze the ventilation network, keep records on various ventilation installations, calculate the results of measurements and produce reports on ventilation conditions in the working places and on the main air distribution, and plan and analyze the cooling system. All the programs are interactive to terminals. There are a series of data files that are generated by some programs which may be used by other programs. Most of these programs have been developed in-house. The computer is also used as a word processor via a vendor-supplied text editing program to produce memos, letters, and to keep up-to-date lists of equipment used.

The geostatistical technique of conditional simulation is applied to measure the uncertainty inherent in the factor-of-safety (FS) predictions for soil slopes in which there is an incomplete knowledge of the spatial distribution of soil properties. A case study that considers a natural clay slope in Canada is presented. The sequential-indicator simulation technique was used as a means of generating a series of spatial maps of the soil properties at the site. These maps approximate random draws from the conditional probability density function that characterizes existing uncertainty in the spatial distribution. FS determinations were made for each simulated map using the simplified-Janbu approach. In using this approach, computations are performed using a new computer program that can operate on irregular spatial profiles of soil properties specified on a discrete grid. A unique capability of this approach is the ability to generate the FS distribution conditional to the type, position and value of existing site-characterization measurements. This capability should reduce uncertainty in FS predictions.

Investigations have been carried out to evolve a grinding aid useful in grinding a 40% iron-bearing magnetite containing quartz as the major gangue, based on studies conducted with pure magnetite, pure quartz and its synthetic mixture. These investigations established that an addition of 200 g of CaO per metric ton of ore was the most effective in grinding quartz preferentially over magnetite at 75% solids concentration by weight. The limited rheological studies conducted suggest that the effect could either be due to dispersion or the structural modification of quartz. More importantly, a new concept, that of Critical Solids Concentration, where two different minerals behave like one with respect to response to communication in a tumbling mill, has been introduced for the, first time. Above this concentration, one of the minerals is ground at a faster rate than the other, whereas the reverse is the case below this concentration.

Formalized technical audits for mining machinery during manufacturing are a fairly new concept to the North American mining industry. Although used extensively elsewhere, especially in Australia, the concept of independent auditing of machinery design and manufacturing has been slow to gain acceptance in the United States and Canada. Simply stated, a technical audit is an independent, third-party review of all or specific portions of machinery design, manufacturing and assembly to verify compliance with purchase specifications and suitability of the machinery for the specified application. If specified correctly, the useful life of different kinds of structural and mechanical components can be extended beyond normally accepted usage. There is no reason why, if properly designed and built for the application, major structural components on mining machinery cannot be made to last for 20 years before being rebuilt. Also, gearing can be made to routinely last for 15 years.

In the first place, let me thank you for inviting me to appear before you today to speak to you on "Mineral Industry Problems - Present and Future". It is a distinguished honor for me to have this opportunity, and I am highly appreciative of this distinction. The beautiful surroundings of Gatlinburg and the pleasantness of a summer occasion are a wonderful tonic for all of us, yet they should not blind us to the seriousness of our Industry's problems No doubt, because of my past appearances before members of the Society of Mining Engineers, at which I discussed wholly scientific topics, or research in the Applied Sciences, you may be expecting me to revert to these subjects. But I intend to venture in a field that is new to me, yet old to all of us, the field of Economics.

Increasing environmental awareness leads to a reflection on the consequences of a non-appropriate use of mining resources. In this sense the determination of the mining requirements for the building industry is the necessary prerequisite to activate planning in mining according to the principles of environmental sustainability. Experience shows that there is a relationship between the production of buildings in relation to the shape of the city and the resulting demand for minerals. The increasingly urgent demand for maintenance and restructuring by existing buildings will stretch further the demand for minerals with an excessive, no longer sustainable withdrawal, which will lead to focussing greater attention on environmental policies oriented to the use of alternative materials including materials from recycling. It is pointed out moreover that the joint action of land use planning and mining planning leads to interesting applications that have significant repercussions on the environment.

About 45% to 50% of the coal mined in the United States passes through coal preparation plants. East of the Mississippi River, this number increases to about 75% to 80%. Although the cost for coal preparation is worthwhile to some, the coal industry faces the challenges of continuing downward pressure on the price of coal and the impact of new environmental regulations. Coal preparation is an effective process that achieves 75% to 80% ash reduction, 15% to 80% trace element reduction and 85% to 90% Btu recovery. It is less effective for pyrite reduction (35% to 70%) and on-line operating time (40% to 60%). It also suffers from obsolete control systems. In coal preparation, raw coal is modified to a more preferred form to enable its use. The methods used to achieve this modification must be cost-effective and appropriate to the raw coal, the scale of production and the end-user requirements.
