The adsorption behavior of sodium oleate on brucite, Mg (OH)2, has been studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Both internal reflection and diffuse reflection (DRIFT) methods were used to characterize the adsorbed oleate on brucite. DRIFT measurements were shown to be quantitative, and an equilibrium adsorption isotherm was obtained. The conformational behavior of the adsorbed oleate was investigated as a function of adsorption density. It was found that at sub-monolayer coverage the alkyl chains of the adsorbed oleate had more ?gauche? character than at multi-layer coverages. Also, DRIFT spectra revealed that the adsorbed species were magnesium dioleate. For internal reflection measurements single crystals of MgO were hydrolyzed to form a thin Mg (OH)2 layer.

A simulation procedure has been developed that realistically portrays aggregate growth and disintegration for particular types of floc structures in water and wastewater treatment processes. The procedure requires local dissipation rates and specification of an interaction distance between colliding particles. A principal difficulty encountered in polymer flocculation, however, arises from changes in conformation of adsorbed macromolecules. Therefore, in systems where polymer flocculation occurs by bridging, dynamic changes in the particle size distribution depend upon the interaction of nonlinear. stochastic hydrodynamics with particles whose growth results from a number of concurrent and sequential random processes.

Two aromatic-type chelating agents, 1,10 phenanthroline (phen) and 8-quinolinol (quin), were tested as specific depressants for magnetite in the cationic silica flotation of magnetic taconite concentrates. Micro and batch flotation tests, along with zeta potential and adsorption measurements were used. In the presence of a cationic collector, dodecylammonium chloride (DAC), the Fe/phen surface chelate electro-statically repelled DAC, and magnetite was depressed. The negatively charged Fe(quin)2(OH)2-on the magnetite surface attracted the cationic collector and made magnetite floatable.

INTRODUCTION A variety of instruments are available for measuring or monitoring the performance of underground mine-ventilation systems. In general terms, the instruments may be classified as those that measure air velocity and those that measure gaseous concentrations. All costs herein are in terms of 1978 US dollars. The mention of a specific manufacturer or device is not intended to be an endorsement by the US Bureau of Mines. AIR-VELOCITY INSTRUMENTS The basic instruments used for measuring the air velocity in mines are the vane anemometer and the smoke tube. Vane Anemometer Of the air-velocity instruments, the 102-mm (4.0¬in.) vane anemometer is the most common and is available as either a low- or high-speed type. The low-speed anemometer generally is the most suitable for measuring the velocities in ordinary airways. For a rough check of the velocity in an airway, it usually is satisfactory to hold the anemometer by hand, positioning it in the center of the airway for 30 sec. However, the resultant error may be as high as 25% , and such a hand-held approach is unsuitable when accurate or reliable measurements are required. To obtain more accurate measurements, the proper procedure is as follows: 1) Since holding the anemometer by hand generally causes the instrument to read about 15% high, it is mounted on a 0.6-m (2-ft) extension rod. 2) The airway is divided into equal right and left halves. A 1-min traverse is used in each half, moving the anemometer smoothly up and down in a zigzag pattern so that the entire half is covered within the allotted minute. 3) The manufacturer's correction table is applied to the readings to adjust the velocity calculation as necessary. Whenever possible, anemometer readings should be obtained in a long straight section of airway that has a constant cross-sectional area. Bends and obstructions should be avoided, since they cause turbulence and other discontinuities in the airflow and can degrade the accuracy of the velocity measurements. Although a series of velocity measurements at one location usually corresponds to within a few percent, this is not an indication that the airflows calculated from those readings are completely accurate. One reason is that the correction table provided with the instrument generally is not for that specific instrument; instead, it represents the average correction for all such instru¬ments made by the particular manufacturer. Most cor¬rection tables specify a correction factor of from 0 to 15%, depending upon the velocity. However, even after correction, the instrument error still may range from 3 to 5%. At low velocities such as those below 0.76 m/s (150 fpm), the instrument error can be two or three times greater than this, ranging from 6 to 15%. The new ball-bearing anemometers generally perform somewhat better at low velocities than did the older conventional anemometers. Another source of error is introduced when measur¬ing the cross-sectional area of the airway or entry. Under the best of circumstances, measurement errors, instrument errors, and a host of other minor errors all combine to cause a total error of at least 10% in the velocity calculation. The vane anemometer also can be used with reason¬able accuracy to measure airflows in mine-ventilation ducts. In this application, the anemometer is mounted on a rod and is held at the center of the duct end. For a duct that is discharging air, the average velocity in the duct is 85% of the centerline reading (Northover, 1957). For a duct that is taking in air, the average velocity is 70% of the centerline reading (Haney and Hlavsa, 1976). To measure the airflow discharged from a regulator or from a small hole in a stopping or bulk¬head, a correction factor for the area is necessary. A good approach in this situation is to traverse the area of the regulator or hole, holding the anemometer with an extension rod. This provides an average velocity that is multiplied by 85% of the measured area of the regulator or hole. In all cases, the manufacturer's instrument cor¬rection table must be used and applied properly. For accurate results, the anemometer should be returned to the manufacturer for periodic cleaning and checking. If it is in daily use, the anemometer should be returned about once per year, and proportionally less frequently if the usage is less frequent than on a daily basis. Smoke Tube The smoke tube may not appeal to individuals who believe that good measurement results can be obtained only with expensive, complicated, and fragile instru¬mentation. Nevertheless, smoke works about as well as anything for the routine measurement of low air velocities in mines. The following procedure yields reasonably good results: 1) Two marks are scratched 7.6 m (25 ft) apart on the floor of the airway. 2) The smoke tube is used to release a cloud of smoke in the center of the airway, about 0.9 m (3 ft) upstream of the first mark on the floor. 3) A timed interval begins when the leading edge of the smoke cloud passes over the first mark, and the interval stops when the leading edge of the cloud passes over the second mark. 4) A factor of 20% is subtracted from the cal¬culated velocity to determine the true average velocity, providing a correction for the centerline and for the spreading effect at the front of the cloud. INTRODUCTION In the spring of 1988 the Joint Venture of Freeport-McMoran Resource Partners, Limited Partnership, IMC Fertilizer Inc, and Homestake Mining Co. was awarded the sulphur lease for Main Pass Block 299, lease number OCS-G 9372. This was one of eleven leases awarded to the Joint Venturers. Following the initial discovery wells in December 1988, a program of delineation drilling confirmed proven sulphur reserves of 67 million long tons. Proven, recoverable oil and gas reserves are 39.4 million barrels and 7.2 billion cubic feet, respectively. Development of the sulphur mine was given approval as a fast-track project by the Joint Venturers in 1989. The oil and gas reserves were acquired from the original hydrocarbon lessee in 1990 and given fast- track status immediately. Fast-track for these projects meant design and engineering would not be complete before construction began JOINT VENTURE The Main Pass Joint Venture is one of thirteen joint ventures formed between Freeport and three other companies - IMC Fertilizer, Inc., Felmont Oil Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Homestake Mining Co., and Texasgulf Minerals and Metals Co. Felmont has subsequently changed its name to Homestake Sulphur Co. and Texasgulf assigned their interests in the three leases they participated in to their parent company. Texasgulf did not participate in the Main Pass 299 joint venture. Joint venture negotiations, anticipating a lease sale in mid-1988, began in December of 1987. This Joint Venture was the first of its kind; created to acquire offshore leases, explore, develop and mine sulphur. The Minerals Management Service announced a lease sale date of February 24, 1988 on the first business day of 1988. This greatly accelerated the joint venture negotiations. Of the thirteen leases the Joint Ventures bid on, eleven were awarded. Freeport holds its interest in all the leases through its ownership interest in Freeport-McMoRan Resource Partners, Limited Partnership, and Resource Partners is the operator on all of the leases. The Main Pass joint venture percentage ownership is: 58.33 Freeport-McMoRan Resource Partners 25.00 IMC Fertilizer, Inc. 16.67 Homestake Sulphur Co. 100.00 The Main Pass Joint Venture paid $3,401,757 for the Main Pass lease and will pay a royalty of 12.5 percent of production value to the MMS . LOCATION The Main Pass mine complex is located in the Gulf of Mexico, in U. S. federal waters, about 27 kilometers (17 miles) east of Venice, Louisiana or 140 kilometers south east of New Orleans, Louisiana. It is situated in about 63 meters (210 feet) of water. HISTORY The Minerals Management Service (MMS) of the United States Department of the Interior administers the mineral properties of the United States located in federal waters. Periodically the MMS holds lease sales of blocks under its jurisdiction. Prior to the offshore discoveries of sulphur associated with salt domes leased for hydrocarbons, the MMS leased blocks with all minerals including hydrocarbons awarded to the successful bidder for the block. S. Steel. The Southern District not only includes the underground mining of coal but the underground mining of zinc ore in Jefferson City, Tennessee, and the quarrying of dolomitic limestone near Bessemer, Alabama.

Although lateritic deposits have long been a principal source of bauxite and are becoming an increasingly important source of nickel, the problems in the evaluation of such deposits are not generally understood. In the evaluation of lateritic bauxite and nickel deposits, there are many similarities, but there also. are significant differences. It has long been recognized that laterites with commercial concentrations of trivalent metals represent the ultimate in the intense leaching of tropical soils. Any factors which effect-the rate of soil leaching will effect the form of local lateritic concentrations. Although the most intense leaching generally occurs on somewhat elevated areas of gentle relief where there is a free downward flow of rain water, the- effect of local rock structures in effecting varia¬tions in soil metal concentrations has-not been well understood - primarily because the laterite forms a masking blanket over the rocks from which the laterites were derived. All of the-factors which facilitate downward movement of water may effect greater surficial concentrations of trivalent metals. Such features as zones of fracturing, zones of greater rock permeability, and areas of karst topography may, therefore, be responsible for greater leaching. The variations in rock structures and the vagaries of ground water flow pat¬terns impart, to the laterites, rapid lateral and vertical variations in thickness and metal concentrations. One-quarter of a century has passed since the "theory of regionalized variables" (geostatistics) was introduced by G. Matheron (1962, 1963) in France. Yet, only during the past decade has geostatistics found broad acceptance in the mining industry. Foremost among the reasons for this time lag was ignorance. The first English treatise on geostatistics was not written until Matheron (1971), and the first published text accessible to mining professionals did not appear until David (1977). Other significant reasons for the slow acceptance of geostatistics included the conservative nature of management in the 1970s minerals industry, and the fact that conventional ore reserve estimation performs reasonably well when confined to massive deposits of base metal and iron deposits having relatively low coefficients of variation in grades. In short, mine engineers and geologists were not willing to accept a new set of tools for problems that they did not see.

In recent years limited markets have been developed for fly ash, the dust removed from coal-burning powerplant stacks, but most of it is still dumped in spoils areas at a cost ranging from 20 cents to $1.75 per ton. Aside from this cost, the creation of huge spoils areas can present a considerable aesthetic problem. Since the present annual fly ash output of about 20 million tons will probably reach 30 million by 1970, and because satisfactory disposal areas are becoming more limited, markets for much larger quantities of the waste are needed to keep disposal costs from becoming a significant economic factor in coal-burning powerplant operation. Current stress on air-pollution control and beautification, plus the vital need for good powerplant economy, makes it imperative, therefore, that coal producers and consumers expand markets and develop new applications for fly ash. Markets for established uses can be increased by making a greater effort to sell fly ash. New large tonnage markets for fly ash should be sought via more intensive, coordinated research. The economics of fly ash utilization underscores the vital role that must be played by research. To be competitive with other products, processes for the conversion of fly ash into marketable materials face difficulty in regard to two important economic factors--transportation cost and product utility--the other economic factors are favorable. Raw material costs of fly ash, for example, are quite attractive, and supply is no problem because there are many coal-burning powerplants in operation and many more are planned. Demand for products made from fly ash will grow if their utility is established and a good sales program is initiated. The major problems then are transporta¬tion costs and development of useful products.

Introduction It is generally accepted as dogma that sampling contributes most of the error in gold fire assays. Differences in assay results on pulps from the same sample interval are frequently regarded as evidence of the presence of the so called "nugget effect" of relatively coarse gold particles. It is true that coarse gold particles can contribute to substantial sampling fluctuations. But, while the process of sampling is probably the major source of error, the analytical process cannot be completely ignored as a possible contributor to erratic assay results. To maintain a stable assay process, the analytic part of the system must also be kept in control. One method of monitoring the performance of the analytic system is to systematically assay standard materials, whose sampling characteristics are carefully controlled. Gold assay standards are not prepared, nor can they be prepared, to account for both sampling and analytical errors. It is not possible to send coarse material to a lab for both preparation (i.e., comminution and splitting) and fire assaying and then come to conclusions only about the fire-assay process. Because most gold ores are very heterogeneous, sampling errors would, in most cases, completely mask the contribution of the analytical errors. Assay-standard material is prepared only to assess the accuracy and variability in the fire assay process. Because the objective of the assay standard is to provide information about the fire assaying, it is necessary to control the sampling error of the standard material, so that it is only a minor constituent of the discrepancies observed in any assay results. To do this requires that the particle size of the standard material be reduced to a point where the relative standard deviation of the sampling error (i.e... the standard deviation of the errors divided by the average gold content of the material) is 2% or less. For all but very homogeneous mineralization, this means that the material must be reduced to 100% -150 mesh before the sampling errors are adequately controlled. However, even reducing the particle size can contribute to sampling problems. The liberation of gold may cause segregation that can cause large sampling fluctuations that are not easily controlled while maintaining the desired grade. Because, in most cases, the standard material would already be in the "pulp" state when it is submitted to a lab for assay, it is not possible to entirely conceal the nature of the sample from the lab. This is a problem inherent in using assay standard material. Because of the contribution of sampling to error generation in the assay process, the use of "coarse" material does not solve the problem of submitting a totally "blind" standard to the lab. In the sections that follow, the selection, preparation, testing and use of gold fire assay standard material is discussed. While some may dismiss the production of standard material as folly, it is possible to produce and utilize standard material to stabilize and improve the fire-assay process to produce more reliable assay results. Material selection It is desirable to use material that has as nearly the same metallurgical characteristics as the samples with which the standards will be included. However, this is usually difficult. For many reasons, including the particle size at which a significant amount of the gold mineral is liberated, the sampling characteristics of even -150-mesh material may preclude the use of geologically and metallurgically similar ore as a standard. It is usually easier to get material having desirable grade characteristics with the necessary sampling properties than it is to find geologically and metallurgically similar material with the required sampling characteristics. High-grade standards are especially difficult to find and prepare. This is because, as grade increases, the size of the gold particles usually increases. Larger gold particles are liberated and tend to segregate during comminution, and the homogeneity of the material cannot be maintained. For grades much above 3 g/t (0.088 oz/ton), it is very difficult to find material that has the proper sampling properties. Old mill tailings are likely candidates for assay standards. Some of these have sufficiently homogeneous mineral contents, so that the sampling errors can be effectively controlled. Where mill tailings are either not available or are not acceptable, mineralization that has exhibited homogeneous results in reassays of the pulp material is also a good candidate for the standard. Finally, the mineralized rock being sampled may (and should) be used if adequate homogeneity in the -150mesh material exists. "Adequate" ("acceptable") homogeneity is defined below.) The program was developed as part of an ongoing study to produce a simulation model that would determine the optimum duties of a main fan and a booster fan without requiring the trial-and-error runs that are necessary with currently available programs. To use the new program, the user specifies the location of one main fan and one booster fan, and the minimum required airflows in any number of working places. The computer determines the fan duties that will maintain the required airflows at the lowest operating costs without causing undesired recirculation. The methodology of the program and an example showing how it can be applied are presented.

The Port of Conneaut, long regarded as a leader in advanced bulk material handling technology, recently incorporated into its existing facility a new, multi-million dollar coal transfer-storage system. While the basic principles of conveyorized bulk material handling remain unchanged in the new system, design modifications such as rotary dumping of railroad cars, automated car feed to dumper, belt rip detection for conveyor belting, bucket wheel continuous production, and other innovations make The Pittsburgh and Conneaut Dock Company's complex worthy of classification as the "Port of Tomorrow - Today". The Pittsburgh & Conneaut Dock Company, the "Port of Tomorrow - Today", 1s a bulk materials storage and transfer facility located on Lake Erie, 68 miles east of Cleveland, 30 miles west of Erie, PA., and 138 miles north of Pittsburgh. Figure 1 shows an aerial view of the facility. It is designed to handle over 25 million tons per year of metallurgical and steam coals, direct shipping ore, fine ores, concentrates, pellets, limestone, and dolomite. Inbound shipments of iron ore and limestone are received from Minnesota, Michigan, Labrador, and Quebec. Coal arrives from Pennsylvania, Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia, and Maryland. Rail service is provided by the Bessemer & Lake Erie Railroad Company.

It is fundamentally important to evaluate bauxites in a realistic, commercial way on the basis of the processing technology both for the supply of existing alumina plants and for the designing of new ones. The evaluation system developped by ALUTERV-FKI consists of chemical, mineralogical, texture and technological testing. The commercial value of bauxites is basically determined by their available alumina content and the caustic soda consumption required for their processing. However, their contaminants have to be taken into consideration, too. The commercial value of bauxites also depends on the processing technology and their possibly unfavourable chemical and mineralogical composition can be /at least partially/ compensated by R&D efforts. The selection of the optimum processing technology and the effects of further developing the same are demonstrated on monohydrate bauxites containing goethite and carbonates. Some of the technological solutions /desilication or deironing of bauxites, hydrothermal treatment of the digestion residue / make at the same time possible the complex processing of the bauxites, the profitable utilization of their main components.

INTRODUCTION For the construction of several kinds of structures which pass through under railways, we have recently developed an effective and new tunnel construction method, aiming at more secure train operation during the construction as well as the rationalization in the construction works for such structures. Most important in carrying out the construction works for the structures under railways is how to maintain the safe operation of trains. For such construction works, temporary supporting structures and supplemental works have been often applied, for which high cost and long period for the construction have been required. While, this new tunnel construction method has the feature that it is capable of constructing definitive structures for various purposes, which, at the same time, acts as the temporary supporting members for protection of railways. Therefore, this method is now drawing much attention in that higher safety of train operation, low construction cost, and shorter construction period are accomplished, minimizing the period required for slackening the train speed during the construction works.

The demand for mineral raw materials, especially in the major industrialized nations, has grown rapidly during the past three decades. One consequence of this growth has been an increasing reliance by the large industrialized countries upon nondomestic mineral supplies. These mineral supplies, to a large extent, have been developed by capital from the major industrialized countries. Until recently, most foreign mining ventures were either wholly-owned subsidiaries or joint ventures between two or more mining companies. The recent rise of economic nationalism has substantially changed the business climate and parameters under which foreign investors operate. This paper describes some of the underlying reasons for this change and notes how investors have adapted to the new business conditions.

With the advent of new high-strength magnetic materials, rare-earth magnetic separators have become more common place for processing heavy mineral sands. In many instances, rare-earth magnets have replaced conventional separators such as electromagnetic cross-belt and induced-roll type machines. This paper will present the results from a detailed test program developed to evaluate the performance of rare-earth drum and roll separators for processing heavy mineral sands. The effect of machine design parameters, such as magnetic element configuration and separator diameter, will be reviewed in light of these test results. The impact of basic operating parameters (i.e. feed rate and roll speed) on separation efficiency will also be presented.

Cable bolts are used as a means of rock support around underground excavations in many mines across Canada and around the world. A substantial body of research on cable bolting was conducted at a number of Canadian universities and mines from the mid-1980s through the 1990s. Since then, research into selected areas of cable bolting practice has continued in Canada. The research has focussed on cable bolt instrumentation and on the inclusion of cable bolts in empirical stope design techniques. A review of cable bolting practice is now warranted at many mines. It has been five years since the completion of the previous substantial body of Canadian academic research and the associated advancement in understanding of cable bolt design, implementation and verification practice. Attempts were made at that time to transfer the new design procedures and performance assessment technologies to mine-site personnel. In some cases, this was effective, and ground control personnel continue to improve on their cable bolting practice at each specific mine site. However, at other sites, experienced people have moved on, and the new, less experienced personnel do not have access to the training or technical resources required to improve their understanding of the subject. In other cases, the technology was not transferred effectively to practitioners, with the result that substantial improvements can be made to the cable bolting practice at those mines. Guidelines for auditing cable bolting practice are provided in this paper. The guidelines include a discussion of the objectives of the audit, suggestions for audit procedure and a summary of the possible outcomes of a cable bolt audit. The objectives of an audit might include assessing the reasons for unexpected cable bolt failures, evaluating the quality of the installation procedures, quantifying the efficiency of the cable bolt system and assessing training requirements and procedures. A cable bolt audit should include consideration of all aspects of the cable bolting cycle, including the design, implementation and verification phases of the operation. At the end of the audit, a ranking should be assigned to the components of the cycle. The ranking system can then be used to identify items that require immediate attention, others that could be improved and others that are adequate. Following completion of a cable bolt audit, increased confidence in the support system and its application is generally, found, along with the potential for cost savings in many cases.
