The amount of toxic fumes produced during blasting operation depends on the types of explosives used, product formulation, degree of confinement, conditions of use, and reactivity of the explosives with the host rock. Ammonium nitrate and fuel oil (ANFO) is still the explosive of choice due to its lower price and ease of use/loading. If not properly monitored and controlled, toxic fumes produced from blasting operations can have serious health hazards [1]. This paper presents a novel technique developed to track trapped fumes during a development blasting.

Advanced remote sensing can be a powerful new information tool to help private and public entities make better environmental and resource management decisions. However, some regulated entities are reluctant to develop or use this tool because of their concerns that it will lead to increased risks and costs of environmental legal liability. They fear that new ways of monitoring the environment will increase liability, undermine existing enforcement agreements, reopen compliance agreements, and generally provide a competitive disadvantage to early adopters by accelerating environmental cleanup costs. Others counter that the increased risks are marginal, and that several advantages outweigh these risks, including the opportunity to more effectively manage environmental operations, target and set priorities, measure and track management and compliance effectiveness, provide more defensible environmental assessments and baseline conditions, make and defend optimal siting decisions, and avoid or resolve environmental disputes. This paper offers strategic advice on ways regulated entities can enjoy the benefits of these powerful new information tools while mitigating down-side legal and compliance risks as much as possible.

"Shale gas has become an increasingly important clean energy, which has been explored worldwide in recent decades. Supercritical CO2 acts as fracturing fluid for shale gas production. The safety monitoring is essential to prevent any kinds of leakage from the reservoir as the supercritical CO2 physically stored hundred kilometres underground. Seismic tomography is an imaging technique that uses induced seismic waves to create three dimensional images of the subsurface. It is an effective monitoring method to evaluate the caprock integrity in the carbon dioxide sequestration storage (CCS). In this experimental research, a simulated uniaxial compressive load is applied on a granite sample to analyze the stress redistribution for long-term in-situ caprock integrity during CO2 injection. The induced seismic waves are recorded and seismic events are traced based on the Geiger algorithm. The frequency of seismic events correlates with the caprock failure evolution. The acquired seismic data is divided into four regimes based on the frequency of seismic events and the failure process to examine the failure evolution. Furthermore, the travel time and distance is plotted to analyze the variation of velocity. Finally, the double difference tomography (TomoDD) algorithm using arrival time is adopted to recalculate the locations of seismic events and velocity structure in each regime. The results indicate that the passive seismic system can map the caprock stress distribution and allow for imaging of the caprock integrity. TomoDD exhibits sound improvements to relocate seismic events both in relative and absolute locations as well as to characterize the local velocity structure. The study further reveals that seismic monitoring along with TomoDD could evaluate the caprock failure accurately in the CCS.Introduction To reduce the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere, CO2 capture and sequestration (CCS) has been suggested to as a means of continuing to use fossil fuel resources while offsetting their negative environmental impacts (Eiken et al 2011). A positive CCS project should retain 99% of the injected supercritical CO2 (pressure is greater than 7.38 MPa and temperature is above 31.04? and a density is of about 700 kg/m3) over at least 100 years (Davidson et al 2005). As large quantities of supercritical carbon dioxide are being injected into full scale storage projects, caprock stress is redistributing and the leakage could occur anywhere over a wide storage area (Hou et al 2012). Acoustic waves are emitted from the caprock, as it fractures due to the CO2 injection, which can be detected by passive seismic sensors (Shitashima et al 2013). Tomography techniques are advantageous for imaging the integrity of the caprock in the CCS projects. Velocity tomography uses waves to model entities based on the arrival time of waves (Westman et al 2001, Westman 2004, Luxbacher et al 2008). Seismic tomography is a data inference technique that exploits information contained in seismic records to constrain 2D or 3D models of the Earth's interior. It generally requires the solution of a large inverse problem to obtain a heterogeneous seismic model that is consistent with field observations (Kudryavtsev et al 2012)."

This paper will discuss the background information about rock cutting tools used for soft ground excavation, their history and evolution. A brief review of the current state of the art manufacturing technology will be presented and some parameters related to the material used in the drag and conical type pick cutters and their impact on their life and performance will be explained In addition, the selection procedures for choosing the right bit for excavation of a particular geological formation will be reviewed A set of guidelines will be provided for initial selection of the tools for various machines and rock formations. The methods for estimation of the tool life in various materials and the influencing parameters along with limitations of the rock cutting tools will be discussed as well.

The Bureau of Mines has developed two expert systems to give advice on coal mine dust control, one for continuous miner sections, and another for longwalls. Prototype versions have been evaluated by coal operators and MSHA. Both systems query the user as to the nature and extent of the dust control problem. Typical questions asked deal with matters such as cutting sequence, current dust standards and characteristics of current dust control techniques. Advice given by the system generally does not focus on a single issue, but may suggest a variety of approaches consistent with the ability of the operator to practically implement what is suggested. Both were written using expert system development software called Insight 2+. The advantages of Insight 2+ for the user are: low cost, IBM-PC compatibility, and the fact that little prior experience with computers is required. For the developer, Insight offers an easy to use production rule language and goal driven structure as well as a wide variety of capabilities.

INTRODUCTION In 1973, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) initiated a 10-year program of research on tunneling technology for future highways as a part of a larger Department of Transportation effort on tunnels. The objectives of the FHWA program are to: improve tunnel design technology, reduce costs, minimize adverse environmental impact due to construction, increase the rate of construction, and assure the maintenance of a safe and attractive tunnel environment. The program is divided into four research tasks designed to solve tunneling problems identified by the engineering and field offices of the FHWA. These tasks are as follows: 1. Cut-and-Cover Tunneling 2. Site Investigations 3. Ground Movements - Prediction and Control 4. Highway Environmental Criteria for Tunnels In order to provide input into Tasks 2 and 3, the FHWA is sponsoring an investigation and testing program by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation to instrument and monitor two sites in the second bore of the Eisenhower Memorial Tunnel located on Interstate Highway 70 at Loveland Pass approximately 97 km (60 miles) west of Denver, Colorado. The tunnel will be approximately 14.0 m (46 ft) in diameter when excavated. Indonesia is the world’s largest supplier of nickel ore, with its nickel laterite resources mainly distributed in the Moluccas and Sulawesi regions. However, there is scant research on the mineralogical characteristics of nickel laterite deposited in southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia. This study aims to investigate the mineral phase structure, chemical analysis, thermal properties and element distribution characteristics of the middle and lower part of the rotten rock zone located in the southeast Sulawesi ophiolite belt.

The Bethlehem Mines Corp. is a captive mining subsidiary of Bethlehem Steel Corp. Its coal production is tied to the demands for and production of steel, a situation that has to balance between the following two extreme strategies: (1) either the mines are designed and operated for some optimum production level and the demand fluctuations within the steel corporation are met by supplementary corporate coal sales and purchases, or (2) the mines absorb all the demand fluctuations, regardless of the effects on mine costs. A rational definition of the best strategy between these extremes is, of course, needed but is very difficult to formulate in view of the complexity of the many factors that would have to be included in the analysis. Consequently, rather than setting profit targets for each given mining division and/or individual mine, the practice evolved to set production targets for producing specified tonnages of coking coal for shipments to the ovens located at the corporation's iron and steelmaking plants. This in turn leaves the mines with the dilemma of having to explain demand-related cost-per-ton fluctuations while essentially depriving them of the ability to control profit through tonnage optimization. In the early 1970's, the coal prices rose significantly, while other factors led to sagging productivity in underground coal mining. Thus, the role of Bethlehem's coal operations in the corporate profit picture gained in relative importance. This, in turn, sparked a closer attention to the coal mining cost structure and factors controlling productivity. At the same time, the drastic increase in the capital needed to open a new mine also increased the amount of planning required to minimize risks. All of this called for more well-defined, quantitative operating data. Bethlehem therefore launched, in the early 1970's, a number of innovative steps that, as the future may show, represented pioneering contributions to the growing sophistication of North American underground coal mine planning and management control practices. This case study describes the changes that led to the current implementation of a novel production reporting system at Bethlehem's coal mines. These changes took place in two distinctly different phases. The current system that resulted from the Phase II developments utilizes, of course, experience gained earlier and is expected to be amplified to incorporate more advanced concepts and technology as future experience dictates.

At present the feasibility of developing underground facilities for the storage of a number of products including toxic waste, oil, nuclear waste and low pressure gas is under investigation in e number of countries. A possible method of storage is in large excavations, Preliminary ventilation design work has identified that the climatic conditions encountered within these large excavations are a limiting ventilation pollutant within the ventilation system. This paper examines the design of a variety of sizes of excavation from a ventilation viewpoint. The main phases of an excavations lifetime can be divided into four main phases, these being construction, civil and mechanical fitting, storage, full and sealed. The paper details ventilation design options for the first two phases of e vaults lifetime, giving climatic simulations to assess the likely climatic conditions within the excavations for e number of facility depths. The options for climatic control are given and analyzed by means of climatic simulations techniques. l. INTRODUCTION The feasibility of developing underground facilities for the storage of a number of products is under investigation at present in a number of countries. This paper details a possible design for such a facility where the product is to be stored in large underground excavations. A facility layout has been designed with the aim of allowing concurrent construction and storage operations. Thus from a ventilation perspective the facility consists of two circuits , a construction ventilation circuit and a product ventilation circuit both of which are served by an intake and a return surface connection The construction and storage circuits are considered as independent of each other , any interaction in the form of leakage must be from the construction to the storage circuit. From the facility design a ventilation network was developed to assess the ventilation requirements of the facility. In analyzing the pollutant loads for the construction circuit two pollutants were recognised to be critical to the ventilation design , these being diesel exhaust fumes and heat end humidity. In this paper ventilation design options for the construction and civil and mechanical fitting phases of the excavations are analyzed by means of climatic simulation and options for climatic control within the vaults are outlined . 2. FACILITY DESIGN A schematic diagram of a facility design is illustrated in Figure 1. There would be two distinct ventilation circuits , one to service the construction operations and the second to serve the storage operations which occur concurrently with construction , the circuits are separated by ventilation bulkheads . Access to the facility for intake air is provided by two drifts, one to serve each circuit. Two shafts act as returns to surface. The facility consists of two distinct zones for the storage of two types of product. One type is to be stored in smell linear excavations. The second zone is for the storage of a second product in larger excavations. The maximum cross-sectional area and perimeter for the smell linear excavations are 456.25 m2 and 83.2 m, while for the larger excavations they are 440.1 m2 and 86.4 m. Excavation construction consists of three phases: 1. Initial pilot tunnel development between main intake and return to provide through flow ventilation. 2. Enlargement to produce the required finished cross-section. 3. Civil and mechanical engineering work to fit out the excavation ready for storage. It is proposed to excavate the excavations using drill and blest methods utilising diesel equipment. Spoil is to be transported to surface by a conveyor belt system. At any one time the maximum number of working places requiring ventilation will consist of ; 3 storage sites, 2 excavations under construction, 2 excavations undergoing civil and mechanical fitting. Most of the world’s production of natural soda ash comes from the mining and processing of trona found near Green River, WY. The processing of trona ores to ultimately yield a high-quality dense soda ash product and reject the insoluble gangue species, primarily in the form of oil shale, is water and energy intensive. It is speculated, however, that the glass-manufacturing industry, which is the largest consumer of soda ash, may be able to use product of a lower grade and consistent level of the insoluble constituents. Thus, the viability of using sensor-based sorting to produce a beneficiated trona stream that would be fed to calcination was investigated. The study encompassed the preparation of a run-of-mine (ROM) Green River ore sample; selection of specimens sized 25 to 75 mm; imaging of the specimens by sensors based on X-ray transmission (XRT), color and laser-induced fluorescence (LIF); insolubles analysis of the specimens; and a bench-scale sorting test. Results of the study established that a correlation between the color of the individual ore particles and their insoluble content exists, and that a surface-detection-based sensor, particularly LIF, is apparently more suitable than XRT to produce a beneficiated trona stream. The bench-scale sorting test demonstrated that a 65 percent separation efficiency and a 70 percent recovery of trona could be achieved.

It is always a pleasure for me to address a group of mining engineers. I am doubly grateful when I am allotted sufficient time to describe the total Office of Coal Research program. My remarks are directed to our total program but I trust you will all understand my emphasis of the utilization aspect of our activities since that is my portion of the program. From its inception, the Office of Coal Research has sought out creative ideas for improving our national use of coal by developing new uses, improved mining procedures, lower costs, and appropriate studies with respect to the resource itself. Quite early in the game, our Economics and Marketing Division contracted for studies with respect to New England export market, Western coal, and similar items. Our Mining and Preparation Division has successfully developed a packaged coal-fired boiler and has partially developed a packaged fluid-bed type boiler as well. Our Mining and Preparation Division is working in such diverse fields as treatment of sewage with coal and the separation of coal into distinct-petrographic constituents so that all fractions of the coal can be put to the best possible use. We would like to be doing more work on improved mining methods, better preparation techniques, and any other mining improvement that will benefit the industry and our program. The synthetic fuel plants I will describe later will operate seven days per week, 24 hours per day. We would like the mine to operate on this same sort of cycle and are prepared to support research that will lead to this.

New Zealand is a small, almost pristinely pure country environmentally speaking. It is blessed with an abundance of clear waterways, lush green vegetation and fresh clean air. It is a country in which agriculture and forestry predominate, and mining developments have to be introduced prepared to answer in considerable detail the question "How will this proposal affect the New Zealand environment as we know it today". Those who make the legislation have the difficult problem of establishing standards at a level which will maintain as far as possible the status quo without unduly inhibiting the developments currently approaching the starting line. We have been fortunate in some sense in that since the demise of the early gold rush days by the 1920's, little mineralisation of a complex nature has been uncovered in New Zealand. Coal fields have been developed in the central North Island, and on the West Coast and Southland regions of the South Island. A ban on large scale open cast mines in the Coromandel area has restricted mining in that highly prospective area, although three large gold prospects have got underway elsewhere in the last three years. There is no other ore processing being undertaken at present. Some recent proposals involving lead, gold and silver in complex arseno­ sulphides have failed to get the necessary approvals and have been discarded. Our ore processing problems are therefore straightforward ones, and confine themselves to acid drainage, mercury handling and disposal, and cyanide.

Discussion by S. Serata and K. Fuenkajorn Background Results of the above study in the August 1991 issue of Mining Engineering offer valuable lessons in the solution of cutter-roof problems. The original study plan was initiated by the discussion authors to solve the problems using the "stress control method" of mining (Serata 1976, 1982; Serata, Carr and Martin, 1984; Serata and Gardner, 1986; Serata, Gardner and Preston, 1986; Serata, Gardnerand Shrinivasan, 1986; Serata and Kikuchi, 1986; Serata, Preston and Galagoda, 1987) However, the plan and the planner were changed to the arrangement reported in the paper. The change was considered reasonable at the time due to the mine engineers' uncertainties about the stress control method. Consequently, the basic principle of the study was shifted from the original stress control method to the method described in the paper, which will be called the "yield pillar method" for the purposes of this discussion. The paper convinces the reader that the yield pillar method fails to solve the cutter-roof problems. This doesn't mean that the stress control method also fails. Actually the contrary is true, as discussed below. Limitation of the yield pillar method The paper illustrates clearly how poorly the yield pillar method performs in solving the problem. The reason for this failure is the lack of the protective stress envelope needed to stabilize the cutter roof. Unfortunately, the protective envelope cannot be formed properly without utilizing the stress control method of mining. Changing the pillar size does not make much difference in the roof stability. Stress measurement The key issue is how to form the global stress envelope to make the gate entries safe for production. Therefore, measuring the stress condition of the ground around the mine opening is critically important to solving the cutter-roof problem, regardless of the method applied. With regard to the stress measurement, there is a serious question as to the reported stress state of [6 i = -51.7 MPa (-7499 psi), G2 = -44.5 MPa (-6458 psi) and 63 = -30.8 MPa (-4465 psi)]. It is mechanically impossible to have such a stress state at any location in the mine ground since the known initial vertical stress [o,,] is less than or equal to 800 psi. There may be a large stress state in the [61] direction, but that is possible only at the expense of the [63] value. Having the above stress tensors in the mine is simply impossible. The questionable, reported stress values could be attributed to the application of the overcoring method, which tends to produce erroneously large stress values in the extremely nonelastic mine ground. Stress control method The paper should be considered as a major contribution demonstrating the limitation of the yield pillar method. At the same time, the paper does not disprove the stress control method. However, in comparing the paper with stress control studies conducted in other similar failing grounds, the stress control method appears to be able to solve the problem more effectively. Therefore it is advisable that the mine not give up its efforts to solve the problem. As one of the major suppliers of the chestnut Ridge energy center, Rochester and Pittsburgh Coal Company continues the search for more efficient haulage systems. This search is one that is essential in providing coal to the Keystone and Homer City power plants at the most economical cost. These two electrical generating plants located in west central Pennsylvania are part of the energy center which consists of four generating stations. Prior to the time the two stations were put on line, August, 1967 for Keystone and August, 1969 for Homer City, our company made the decision to rely on belt conveyors from the section to the surface to provide for continuous main line haulage. The proximity of these generating stations to proven reserves allow for minimal truck haulage and minemouth setups. With the addition of seven new mines, in the past ten years, revisions have been made on the original setup to interconnect the haulage of several mines to deliver the product by belt to the power plants.

In this study, we evaluated the effects of different shapes and distribution densities of mineral grains in coal on failure mechanics using the numerical software 3DEC. The main aim of this study was to identify possible failure mechanisms influenced by mineral habit and frequency in coal. Exploring differences in failure mechanics associated with the mineral grains helped to determine the role of mineral character as a possible contributor to characterize burst-prone coals. To achieve the goal of this study, a series of numerical specimens were prepared in the 3DEC model as follows: first, the 3DEC modeling in conjunction with the DFNs (Discrete Fracture Networks) technique was performed to explicitly generate the discontinuities (i.e., cleats and bedding planes) in the numerical specimens based on the results of laboratory analyses. Then, the different realizations of mineral grains were embedded in the 3DEC model to simulate an unconfined compressive strength (UCS) test to assess the influence of the mineralogical characteristics on the UCS.

The mining industry has indeed gone global. International minerals producers are spending big money to move into countries that were off limits a few years ago. Due mostly to political reasons, these countries' huge mineral deposits - worth billions of dollars - were locked up and mining companies could only sit on the side and wonder "what if." Now much of the world is going the free market route. Once closed countries and developing nations are rewriting their mining and tax laws hoping to attract foreign investment to develop their natural resources. And big businesses - mining companies included - are lining up to get their share. But with new opportunities come new risks. While emerging nations are slowly accepting the free market concept and the privatization that goes along with it, many remain plagued with political instability and violence. Even developed nations carry their unique risks. Some of these include inadequate or contradictory legal and regulatory infrastructures, political patronage and outright corruption. So companies hoping to expand into new regions of the world must do more than examine the market. They must study the political stability and structure of a country, as well as its tax and environmental laws. And they must guarantee the safety of their employees. Control Risks Group is an international management consulting company that assists companies preparing to move into a new country. It employs about 225 people in 14 offices throughout the world. Control Risks personnel include lawyers, bankers and former law enforcement officers and intelligence people. The company held a one-day seminar in Washington, DC to update some of its clients on the state of affairs in various regions of the world. The seminar also covered extortion, corruption and product diversion. About 175 people attended the seminar. Speakers included Control Risks' operators, analysts and investigators. Bioremediation is a complex process which involves mass transfer, chemical and biochemical phenomena. In particular, the adsorption kinetics of a substance by biomass may by model by taking into account: - Enzymatic kinetics type; - Combined kinetics - enzymatic kinetics at the same time with the Monod type biomass growth; - Chemical kinetics for substance adsorption according to Freundlich and Langmuir ad-sorption isotherms; - New empirical kinetics models based on experimental data. In this paper modelling of kinetics of bivalent lead ions on live vegetal biomass (aquatic plant Pistia stratiotes) as well as of hydrocarbons on dead vegetal biomass (pyrolysed nuts) is studied (Stoica, 2004). Modelling was carried out using experimental data and relative equations with an error of 5%.

Research was conducted at a western coal mine on a wide variety of underground mining vehicles to develop testing procedures for portable instrumentation monitoring of tailpipe concentrations of diesel particulate matter (DPM), carbon dioxide (CO2) carbon monoxide (CO) and nitric oxide (NO). DPM was measured using the Emissions Measurement Appa¬ratus (EMA) developed by Michigan Technological University (MTU), and an ECOM-KL five-gas analyzer was used to measure gaseous tailpipe concentrations. Baseline concentrations of the tailpipe pollutants were measured using vehicle systems to load the engine. Concentrations before and after the water scrubber were measured and water scrubber efficiencies were estimated by calculation. Field measurement procedures were established. Heavy-duty vehicles with automatic transmissions were loaded using the torque converter to stall the engine. Consistent engine loading for light-duty vehicles with manual transmissions involved placing the transmission in neutral and adjusting the throttle to maintain a constant engine speed of 2,500 rpm. Tailpipe CO2 concentrations for Caterpillar 3306 and 3304 engines were compared to laboratory CO2 data from Caterpillar and MSHA to help determine if engine settings were correctly adjusted for operation at high altitudes. (Perfect agreement between the mine vehicle tailpipe and laboratory measurements would not be expected because of the differences in the test conditions.) DPM concentrations for light-duty vehicles ranged from about 20 to 160 mg/m3, and one light-duty vehicle averaged near 1,000 mg/m3. DPM concentrations for heavy-duty vehicles ranged from about 55 to 200 mg/m3. Widely ranging DPM concentrations for a particular vehicle type reflect the state of maintenance, fuel rate settings and different engine loading procedures as well as differences between samples collected upstream and downstream of the waterscrubber. The calculated DPM removal efficiencies due to the water scrubber varied considerably between vehicles, ranging from 13% to 51%. Calculations indicate that, under worst-case conditions, very large reductions in DPM may be required to meet the proposed DPM PEL of 0.15 mg/m3, even on vehicles with water scrubbers. In-mine ambient air studies, which are needed to actually measure the impact of the tailpipe concentrations on the work environment and the effect of mine ventilation on the dilution of DPM were not done in this first set of tests.

Selective flocculation enables the production of high-brightness kaolin products from kaolin ore once considered too poor in quality for beneficiation into paper-coating pigments. Anatase, Ti(1-X)FeXO2, with X = 0 to 0.05, is a common iron-bearing impurity in sedimentary kaolin that can be unresponsive to kaolin beneficiation processes, such as magnetic separation, due to its extremely fine particle size (<0.3 µm), or chemical bleaching, because of its chemical stability. Described here are selective flocculation technologies that separate anatase by flocculating anatase or flocculating kaolinite from dispersed slurries. Applying the advances in the chemical and mechanical dispersion of ultrafine particles and the selective aggregation of kaolinite or anatase particles have resulted in the selective flocculation processes practiced today that have increased process recoveries from those technologies practiced beginning in the 1960s.

Discussion by G.E. Agar In the April issue of Mining Engineering there is a technical note "New size laboratory ball mill for Bond Work Index determination" written by M. Nematollahi which is very confusing. My recollection is that a description of an experimental procedure should be such that someone skilled in the art should be able to reproduce the results. Applying this test to this particular article would according to me cause a failure to be registered. There are apparently three batch laboratory test procedures referred to in the article. One of these is the traditional Bond test with all its limitations such as dry grinding followed by exclusively dry screening, two attributes which fail to simulate conventional industrial grinding. There is a second procedure (NSBM) which the author is advocating as an improvement of the Bond procedure but from the description I doubt that anyone would be able to repeat the procedure. For instance, is the grinding to be done wet or dry, if wet at what pulp density, and how is the screening to he done, wet or dry or a combination? On top of that uncertainty the author refers to a simplified "Anaconda" test. No reference is provided for this procedure and in the text the results of the technique are referred to "Denver wet ball mill" results and say nothing of Anaconda results. Reply by H. Nematollahi I think that the method proposed to determine the Bond Work Index in this paper is clearly described in the paper as follows: •The method of grinding is dry (Ref. paragraph I, subject Method description); •The size of ball mill, the quantity and size of balls are noted (Ref. paragraph 1, subject Test equipment); and The test procedure is described in detail (Ref. paragraphs 1, 2 and 3, subject Test procedure). As it is noted in the paper, the test has been worked out under the same condition as Standard Bond Test with ball mill, so dry (screening should be dry also), but using a smaller ball mill and a smaller quantity of sample. Considering the above mentioned points, I believe that the method has been fully and clearly described and it ought to be repeatable as well. The Anaconda test is a method for determination of Work Index and could be done by any types of laboratory wet ball mill (Yan, R.F., et al., cf. References). I applied this method using a laboratory Denver ball mill (Ref. paragraph I subject Determining the Bond Work Index). So the results referred to Denver wet ball mill can be equated the same as Anaconda method.
