Carbon dioxide (CO2) mineral carbonation is a carbon capture and storage (CCS) technique that can sequester CO2 permanently in the form of durable carbonate minerals. Extendable permanent storage capacity — onshore and offshore storage reservoirs — and the exothermic nature of the mineralization process make this technique attractive [1]. In the present study, maximum carbonation efficiency for aqueous mineral carbonation was achieved through two steps: optimization of calcium leaching from cement kiln dust followed by the reaction of pure CO2 with the calcium hydroxide precipitates formed by hydroxylation using sodium hydroxide (NaOH). Optimization of calcium leaching is highly important, as it is a rate-limiting reaction step in mineral carbonation and also influences and enhances the carbonation efficiency. To maximize the calcium leaching as well as carbonation efficiency, response surface methodology — with either Box-Behnken design or central composite design — was applied. It is the most well-known statistical, fully randomized and bias-free method for determining optimized conditions using quadratic regression models.

As the search for minerals leads to deeper mines the need to control water inflow into mine shafts and mine workings will grow. As shal¬lower more readily available minerals are exploited, ore bodies which were previously uneconomic be cause of their depth will now become attractive targets. In known mining districts new ore bodies are being discovered down dip of existing ones. In the west many metal deposits are being developed in rocks of the mountain front pediments, frequently covered by several hundred feet of saturated alluvium. Greater depth often means that workings are developed well below existing water tables, creating high hydrostatic heads adjacent to mine workings. The purpose of this paper is to review some of the methods available for determining if water control will be necessary and to present some of the techniques for locating water bearing zones and the amount of water to be expected. The paper will concentrate on problems associated with water control in mine shaft development, although many of the exploratory techniques are similar to those needed for assessing overall mine water inflow problems. A brief case history on water control problems in mine shafts in the Grants mineral belt of northwestern New Mexico is presented. Water control during shaft sinking presents some unique features. First, the problem is a relatively short term one, since water control is often necessary only while the shaft is being sunk. Control measures may be necessary only while the shaft is open into the water bearing zone and the lining installed and cemented. Secondly, limited working space within the shaft area presents difficulties in handling large amounts of water inflow. The presence of water in the shaft working area increases sinking time and the potential hazard to miners. Finally, there is the economics of shaft sinking. While the shaft is being sunk no ore is being produced and there is every incentive to minimize costs.

Reconnaissance mineral exploration based on the distribution of ore metals in stream sediments has become a generally accepted method of mineral reconnaissance. This approach seems to work almost equally well in all climates and in all kinds of terrain, provided of course that the ore deposits being sought are exposed at or near the surface and are actively undergoing erosion. Nobody with any experience in the field would question the validity of the concept on which stream sediment reconnaissance is based. Considerable dispute does arise, however, when the subject of density of sample sites per unit area, or sample spacing, comes up for discussion. What is the optimum balance between completeness of coverage and cost? The tacit assumption is frequently made that a greater sample density necessarily leads to more complete coverage and hence a lower probability of missing an important discovery, without regard for the size of the stream sample or the topology of the drainage pattern. The purpose of this paper is to attempt to bring the problem of site selection in stream sediment sampling into better focus, and to present a formula that may help in planning reconnaissance programs.

There are many problems faced by ventilation engineers in deep underground mining operations, not the least of which is controlling miner exposure to radon gas and its daughter products. Radon gas is commonly found in uranium mining operations, but may also be present in other deep metal mines. For example, tin mines in England, iron ore mines in Sweden, gold mines in South Africa, and molybdenum mines in the U. S. have potential radon exposures. This is because uranium and accompanying radium ore are ubiquitous to the earth's crust albeit at low levels. The fact that the activity represented by one WL can be caused by a relatively low concentration of radon gas increases the difficulty of control. Since the source of the radon gas is usually widespread throughout a mine, local exhaust ventilation is not a viable control schema. The technique used to control exposure is then dilution ventilation and, in fact, huge amounts of air must be moved in order to reduce potential exposures to an acceptable level. An interesting comparison can be made of ventilation rates in different types of mines. It is estimated in modern coal mines, which are generally acknowledged to have high rates of ventilation, that about eleven tons of air are moved for each ton of ore mined. A typical operating uranium mine may have ventilation flows of 14-15 tons per ton of ore mined. This provides an idea of the scope and importance of ventilation in modern mining operations where radon is a hazard. Further pressure is put on ventilation engineers by the steady downward trend in exposure limits set by national and international standard setting agencies. Much of this tendency toward lowered standards is based upon longitudinal mortality studies of miner populations. Another important factor is the limited number of experienced miners available in the labor pool. For optimum production, it is important to have as many experienced miners underground in each shift as possible. However, the average daily exposure in a U. S. mine must be less than .3 WL to permit the miner to work underground for a full year. The ventilation system then must provide enough uncontaminated air to maintain the WL below the .3 TTL level to maximize production efficiency and minimize personnel turnover and the problems associated with it. Ultimately, the goal of the ventilation engineer and health physicist is to protect the working miner from harmful exposures based upon currently acceptable standards. U. S. Federal regulations require that in uranium mines all active work sites must be monitored every two weeks if they measure above .1 WL. Areas that have .3 WL ratios or higher must be monitored on a weekly basis until five consecutive weekly samples show the level has dropped below .3 WL. Also, exposure records must be kept for all individuals exposed to levels exceeding .3 WL. These requirements provide a strong economic incentive to have a ventilation system that minimizes exposure of any personnel. A good ventilation system requires careful planning, operation and backup in order to fulfill its mission of providing adequate clean air. Its proper operation also requires coordination with production personnel so it can be adapted as new areas in the mine open up and old areas are sealed off. The ultimate indicator of ventilation efficiency to control radon daughter exposure is, of course, monitoring working levels. Historically, this has been done using the Kusnetz, Tsivoglou, and Rolle's methods, among others. These methods all require cumbersome equipment and tedious calculations to obtain the measurements that results in WL. More important, however, they require a significant time lag between sampling and counting, typically 40-90 minutes. This time lag is, in fact, what can cause significant economic losses due to unnecessary downtime as well as high WL exposures. In a typical mining situation, a sampling technician using the Kusnetz method takes a sample, moves to the next location and takes another sample and so on. Forty to ninety minutes after the first sample, the technician will stop, run the activity count on the filter and calculate the WL. The technician may be one-half mile away or several levels removed from where the first sample was taken when it is counted. If the WL ratio is high the technician must then backtrack to the sample position. There are then two options. If the sample area is a working stage, it can be shut down or a second sample can be taken. If the first alternative is chosen; i.e., shutdown and correction of the ventilation, then another sample must be taken, followed by a forty minute wait for results. If the ventilation adjustment didn't correct the problem, then the whole process must be repeated with a minimum of forty-five minutes per sample cycle when using the Kusnetz method. It has been estimated from operating uranium mines that the cost per hour for downtime on a production slope is about $1,50O/hour. The time lag between sampling and resultant data can be very costly. If the second alternative is chosen to verify the first reading, the miners may be unnecessarily exposed to high levels while waiting for the result. Clearly, such a sampling system can be markedly improved by eliminating the excessive time lag between sampling and analysis.

The lawyer's role in underground construction, certainly for the past 20 years, has been principally that of the advocate in disputes resolution. Disputes in underground construction have been steadily increasing, making the lawyer a more prominent participant in the underground construction process. It is widely believed, however, that this is not a salutory state of affairs. It is our thesis that lawyers ought not be eliminated from the process, but rather that their role should be changed. They should function as prophylactics rather than as swords, i.e., they should be used to prevent or reduce disputes rather than, after the fact, to champion their clients' causes. a. Mr. Rubin is a partner in the New York law firm of Postner & Rubin. He has litigated and arbitrated numerous complex construction disputes. He has also participated in efforts to improve contracting practices on committees of ASCE and the National Academy of Engineering. b. INTRODUCTION Production of chrysotile asbestos from the northern Appalachians has been going on for 100 years and, on the basis of known reserves and the present rates of mining, appears assured of continued production for at least another 25 to 30 years. In spite of this, mining companies and government agencies are showing an increasing interest in exploring for chrysotile asbestos throughout this region and elsewhere in the world, implying that increases in the rate of consumption are envisioned. This chapter describes the geologic and tectonic settings surrounding these important chrysotile deposits, with emphasis on those in southern Quebec that yield about 90% of the total production from the northern Appala- chians. Detailed descriptions of a few individual deposits are also given, along with exploration guidelines aimed at facilitating the discovery of additional chrysotile deposits. One section of this chapter deals with the origin and mode of formation of the chrysotile deposits in the light of modern day concepts of plate tectonics. The objectives of this chapter are to give a brief description of the geologic and tectonic settings of the ultramafic rocks in which the numerous chrysotile deposits of the northern Appalachians are found; to describe a few of the individual deposits; to give a few exploration guidelines for those interested in exploring for new asbestos deposits in similar geologic environments; and to propose a new model for asbestos genesis in light of the recently developed theories of global tectonics. As this chapter is based almost entirely on field and laboratory observations, rather than on the study of experimental laboratory models, most of our deductions and suggestions are empirical in nature and may be interpreted in more than one way. The interpretations we have selected seem to offer, we feel, the best explanation of observed geological phenomena (Lamarche and Wicks, 1975). This region had a production capability in 1979 of close to p.5 Mt of chrysotile asbestos with 92% of this tonnage being derived from the deposits of the Eastern Townships of Quebec. With known resources, which now stand at between 36 and 40 Mt of fibers, this production capability seems assured for the next few decades. In spite of all known reserves of chrysotile asbestos, which now stand at between 36 and 40 Mt of fiber in this region alone, mining companies and government agencies are still showing a good deal of interest in exploring for new sources throughout the world. GEOLOGICAL SETTING The asbestos deposits at Baie Verte in eastern Newfoundland, Thetford Mines, Black Lake, Asbestos in southern Quebec, and Belvidere Mountain in Vermont, all occur in partly serpentinized ultramafic rocks that are part of the Lower Paleozoic ophiolite complexes of the northern Appalachians [Cady, Albee, Chidester, 1963, Chidester, Albee, Cady, 1978, Lamarche, 1972,1973, Laurent, 1973,1975, Williams, Hibbard, Bursnall, 1977, Norman and Strong, 1975). The deposits to the northeast of Thetford Mines, on the other hand, are found in a more highly serpentinized ultramafic body known as the Pennington dike, whose spatial, genetic, and chronological links with the ophiolite masses proper have not as yet been adequately resolved. Technology development has played a crucial role in the minerals industry throughout history. The development of new technology allows mankind to produce metals and minerals at progressively lower cost of production in real terms, and therefore at progressively lower prices, improving their availability, accessibility and utilization worldwide. However, the developers of such technology are not guaranteed to reap the benefits from this effort: There is an expectation that technology developers will gain an advantage over their competitors. Is this a short-term benefit that results from a temporary cost or efficiency improvement, or is it a sustainable longer term "edge" that prevails even after metal or mineral price has been eroded by the implementation of a major step change technology? This issue is examined by reference to several case study examples in the copper industry. BACKGROUND The development and adoption of new technology has played a crucial role in the commodity minerals industry throughout history. As new, cost-efficient technologies are commercialized, the cost of production decreases, and this enables lower grade ore to be processed profitably. This in turn increases the availability and supply of the metal or mineral of interest, and ultimately (in a free market environment where the supply- demand balance determines price) inevitably decreases the metal or mineral price. This leads to the question: Why should mining companies invest in (new) technology development if the result is a decrease in the product price? Stratiform uranium deposits occur in Canada along the north shore of Lake Huron near the base of the Middle Precambrian Huronian Supergroup. Outcrop of the Buronian Supergroup extends for over 400 km from Sault Ste. Marie in the west eastward through Sudbury and then northeastward to Cobalt. Maximum stratigraphic thickness exceeds 5 km. The predominant Huronian rock type is metamorphosed sandstone (quartzite), with sub- ordinate argillite, conglomerate, mixtite (possibly tillite), volcanic rocks, and minor limestone, Much of the quartzite is highly feldspathic. Substantial uranium ore was first discovered in Huronian rocks in 1953 and has been exploited continuously since the initial mine-mill plant was constructed at the Pronto ore body, 30 km south of the present townsite of Elliot Lake. Only one ore body remains in production, however. It is shared by Rio Algom and Denison Mines 14 km north of the town of Elliot Lake.

The method of coal pillar design involves primarily two aspects, the geometry of the pillar and the strength of the coal. However, the strength of the coal has to be emphasized with respect to the entire pillar dimension rather than isolated strength values of coal samples taken and measured from different locations. The presently applied pillar design systems do not specify clearly what the coal sample strength really represents. The intention of this paper is to introduce the concept of seam strength as opposed to the current practice of using coal strength as a prime design criteria in the formulation of pillar calculations. Seams are most of ten composed of multiple layers of coal, partings, and bone in different configurations, changing within the vertical section of the seam even in relatively close locations. The difference in strength between the weakest and strongest component of the coal seam could be as much as five times or more. An experimental approach based on multiple compressive tests performed on coal samples from the Coalburg and the Warfield seams from Eastern Kentucky was undertaken. The analysis of the results lead to the conclusion that for pillar calculations both the weighted mean of the seam strength and the strength of the weakest stratum should be considered rather than the relatively vague aspect of coal strength The design of pillar dimensions based on the above mentioned aspects should assure a more realistic design performance.

There is assembled here this morning in Chicago the heartland of America, what is undoubtedly the greatest concentration of Technical, Scientific and "CAN DO" knowledge ever assembled in America. The participation in this Conference by the representatives of so many nations is particularly impressive and is a further indication of the importance of the subject matter of this conference which you will be discussing in much detail during the next few days. Another impressive feature of this Conference is the participation of a large segment of the construction industry in whose hands fall the job of building what others design. Also strongly represented is the manufacturing industry whose capability is well known throughout the world. They have the resources to design, develop and manufacture the machines and specialized equipment needed to do any job which the world requires. You should not expect to gain any knowledge from my few remarks this morning as I am undoubtedly the least qualified individual in this room on the highly technical and scientific subjects you will be discussing during these next few days. However, I shall offer a few broad suggestions on subject matter which I trust may generate serious thought during your discussions.

Middle Pennsylvanian (Desmoinesian) coals of certain areas of the Illinois and Forest City Basins contain epigenetic sphalerite and associated minerals in veins, clastic dikes, cleat, and other small-scale structural features. The presence of sphalerite in these coals records information about the geology of coals and coal basins, and represents a potential source for zinc as a byproduct of coal production. Origin of Sphalerite in Coal The origin of sphalerite in coal suggested by Cobb (1) involves sphalerite precipitation from zinc-bearing ?Na-Ca-Cl brines upon contact with sources of sulfur in the coal bed, e.g., pyrite, H2S, and organic sulfur. These brines were essentially at the temperature of the host coals as determined by fluid-inclusion thermometry and vitrinite-reflectance studies. The migration of these brines into coal beds may have been caused by compaction of sediments due to continued sediment loading of the coal basins. Zones of high permeability such as sandstones and the coals themselves presumably acted as conduits for the movement of the brines. The open spaces where sphalerite was deposited resulted from minor deformation associated with differential compaction and cleat formation enhanced by volume shrinkage during coalification.

The only previous attempt to use a tunnel boring machine in the rock formations encountered in New York City was unsuccessful. However, technology has been developed since then which made a new attempt a practical proposition. Nine thousand feet each of 8'6" and 11'0" diameter tunnels were driven in Manhattan schist using Jarva TBM's together with 1100 ft. of the smaller diameter driven conventionally in Inwood marble and earth. (1) The selection of tunneling method was largely based on the need to avoid community reaction and hazardous tunneling conditions where the larger diameter tunnel passed beneath residential structures in poor condition in seamy and blocky rock. Experimentation with cutters and cutter mountings indicate that good cutter life and ease of change are available. It was found practical to use unusually large muck cars for an efficient muck disposal system. Conventional tunneling was successfully executed beneath a subway station whose invert was less than seven feet above the crown of the tunnel. Attempts at chemical consolidation and dewatering were unsuccessful in the earth section which was completed under compressed air.

The Haile Gold Mine in South Carolina is increasing the automation level of their processing plant in order to improve operational stability. One step towards this goal is the application of a Digital Twin concept to provide Virtual Instruments. Haile has engaged ANDRITZ to implement Virtual Instruments at their grinding area hydrocyclones and at their tailing thickener underflow pump. These virtual instruments provide density values in a traditionally difficult location for reliable slurry density measurement. The Digital Twin is a first principles IDEAS1 ™ simulation model, connected in real time to the control system. Results have been promising, with the virtual instrument values matching the physical instrument under normal operating conditions, and showing better prediction under upset conditions. Haile plans to use the virtual instruments as optional process control parameters. INTRODUCTION OceanaGold’s Haile Gold Mine is located near Kershaw, South Carolina, about 50 miles southeast of Charlotte, North Carolina. This location was first mined in 1827, and has produced gold through several operating periods since then, including a heap leaching operation from 1985 through 1992. In October, 2015, OceanaGold acquired Romarco Minerals, the previous owner of the Haile Operation. The current operation began in 2017 as an open pit mine with additional underground resources. The nameplate throughput is 6,350 tpd ore, and 2017 production was 118k oz gold, with 140 to 155k oz gold expected in 2018. Proven and Probable reserves exceed 3 Moz. The process, as shown in Figure 1, includes a primary jaw crusher, comminution with a Semi-Autonomous Grinding (SAG) mill and ball mill circuit, flash flotation, rougher flotation, regrinding, pre-aeration, carbon in leach (CIL) leaching, carbon elution and regeneration, cyanide recovery, electrowinning and refining. The Haile Operation’s inaugural gold pour took place January 20, 2017. Mine life is expected through at least the year 2030. Based partially on prior experience of some key OceanaGold personnel with automation services from ANDRITZ on other projects, OceanaGold decided to include ANDRITZ on the Haile project. The scope of these services for Haile included design and supply of the process control application software, an ANDRITZ dynamic process simulator for operator training, and ANDRITZ Advanced Control Expert (ACE) ®2 systems for the SAG mill, ball mill, and rougher flotation areas. Since startup, ANDRITZ has continued to provide services for the site, particularly related to PLC and HMI equipment, programming and support, ACE system expansion, and the implementation of Virtual Instrumentation. The implementation of this new Virtual Instrumentation technology at Haile is consistent with Haile goals: increased automation, a change in the role of the operator from interactor to monitor, and improved stability by removing human error.

The results of a recent study on the influence of continuous and conventional mining techniques on the size consist and wash- ability characteristics of coal are presented. Eight samples, four each from continuous and conventional mining sections were collected. Each sample was screened in seven size fractions, and each size fraction was totally fractionated at five gravities. The data thus collected was statistically examined for the influence significance of mining techniques, size, and gravity on the quality of the mined product. The paper presents the sample collection method, data gathering and analysis procedures, and major conclusions. The study revealed that there are pronounced differences in the products from the two mining systems and that conventional mining yielded a better product in terms of size-consist, and yield, ash, and sulfur in both the raw and washed products. The results of the study are significant in regard to consideration of resource utilization and conservation, and environmental impacts.

Land use impact assessment for mining is time- consuming and expensive. Because of mining’s impact on biodiversity, land use assessment methods that evaluate biodiversity are important for mining land use impact assessments. Remote sensing, in particular satellite multispectral sensing platforms such as Sentinel‑2 and the Landsat mission series, have been used to assess and quantify biodiversity through proxy variables such as NDVI (Peña-Lara et al., 2022). The objective of this paper is to present results of a comparative study of land use and biodiversity based on multispectral satellite observations and production data from copper and cobalt mining in the Democratic Republic of Congo. We quantify the relationship between different spectral bands and vegetative indices and the production data provided by the mining companies and measure correlations. The results suggest that remote sensing could be a cost- effective means of assessing biodiversity impacts of mining.

Panel caving is an underground bulk mining method that uses gravitational force to mine massive, steeply dipping and deep-seated ore deposits at lower operating cost. To control dust and gas emissions entering the production level during the extraction of ore from the draw points in a panel cave, relatively negative pressure is created in the cave by installing an exhaust fan in the exhaust drift located on top of the cave. As caving is a dynamic process, designing an effective ventilation system is challenging; therefore, estimating the airflow resistance offered by the broken rock inside the cave is critical. This study investigates the effect of changes in the bulk porosity of the broken rock on the cave airflow resistance using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach. The results show an inverse relationship between the cave airflow resistance and the bulk cave porosity. The pressure-quantity characteristic curves presented in this paper provide valuable information for sizing and operating an exhaust fan used for a mature panel cave ventilation.

The scope of this experimental work was to study the yttrium extraction and stripping behaviour in a solvent extraction system with mono(2-ethylhexyl)2-ethylhexylphosphonic acid (IONQUEST 801) in a chloride system The study was performed for only one contact between organic and aqueous phases The experiments were carried out according to a factorial design. Due to the statistical analysis and its experimental proof, the optimum conditions for maximum yttrium loading into the organic phase of the extraction stage were 16 minutes for time of contact between phases, 980 rpm of stirring intensity and pH=2.3 for the aqueous phase of the sovent extraction system. The optimized experimental conditions by the statistical approach for the stripping stage were: time of contact between phases equal to 20 minutes, 1050 rpm of stirring intensity and 1.75 M HCI into the stripping aqueous solution.

In December of 1992, the City of New York, Department of Environmental Protection, solicited bids for Contract 543B. The low bidder was a joint venture of Schiavone Construction Co., Inc. and the J. F. Shea Co., Inc. When completed, the project provides a 4.88 meter diameter water tunnel 8,840 meters long. This paper presents a case history of the equipment and construction methods utilized for this, the first portion of the New York City Water Tunnel constructed by use of a tunnel boring machine.

The primary concern in dealing with contractual arrangements for construction is getting the work completed satisfactorily, in the shortest time, and for the least expense for the owner--while assuring that all other parties associated with the contract make a reasonable profit for their effort. In our complex construction climate of today, achieving all of these is usually not possible. Somewhere between the beginning of design and the completion of the work, disagreements and delays arise which can destroy the best of intentions. Assuming that all parties associated with the contract are acting honorably and professionally, the disagreements generally arise through inappropriate contract types or through flawed contract documents. These flaws can be either sins of omission or commission, but we must find a way to lessen, if not completely eliminate, their impact. Disagreements and delays are directly related to the extra cost which the owner and the other involved parties must suffer. Usually the attorneys are the only ones who come out on the positive side. Inappropriate or defective contract documents can be the result of inadequate time for preparation and review, laziness in not searching out the proper terms and language, insufficient recognition of the proper assignment of risks, or just ignorance as to what is right and what is wrong for the particular project.
