A majority of the chemical process industry uses lime in either a powder or liquid form. Engineering and maintenance personnel often face a long and potentially expensive trial-and-error period in order to find the best process equipment to handle lime. Limestone is mined from a quarry in the form of calcium carbonate (CaCO3). Then, it is crushed and fed into a kiln at approximately 1,093° C (2,000° F), where the carbon dioxide is burned off (calcining) to make calcium oxide (CaO).

A computer-assisted resources and sedimentological study of the Andersonville, Georgia kaolin-bauxite district was begun in 1975 under a grant from the Office of Mineral Resources of the U.S. Geological Survey (Grant # 14-08-1110-G-173). A preliminary report on the kaolin and bauxite resources of the district has been placed on open file at the U.S.G.S. in Reston, Virginia; the Georgia-Geological Survey in Atlanta, Georgia; and Georgia Southwestern College in Americus, Georgia. In addition to a resources estimate, the objectives include the determination of the mineralogical variation, sedimentological parameters, and paleogeographic patterns of the deposition of the high alumina materials and their associated sediments. In the process of compiling data for the resources estimate, isopach maps were developed that provide information as to the shape, size, and distribution of the kaolin deposits and the kaolinitic sediments that contain them. These or similar maps developed for other districts can be useful exploration tools.

A dynamic input-output model for a coal power enterprise that now includes four underground coal mines, three coal washing plants, a power plant and a railway transportation system was developed. The model is applied to analyze investment alternatives for long-term development, including the expansion of existing mines, the opening of new mines, the construction of new coal washing and power plants and the upgrading of the railway system. As a result, the optimal investment strategy with capital schedules and projected sector outputs is obtained. Also, the importance of the new power plant to the strategic development of the company is demonstrated. It is concluded that, without applying a dynamic input-output model, it would be much more difficult or impossible to conduct such a systematic and compete analysis.

Hydrogen peroxide and calcium peroxide are used to improve the extraction of gold/silver and reduce cyanide consumption in heap leaching and mill leaching operations. FMC's standard grade H2O2 and FMC's Permeox™ solid peroxygen, a formulated product containing cao2, was used for the experimental work. It was found that the rates of release and the longevity of these peroxygens in ore-cyanide mixtures are significantly different. When choosing a peroxygen, one of the key factors is extrac­tion time, with the longer extraction times of heap leaching primarily favoring calcium peroxide and the shorter extraction times of mill leaching primarily favoring hydrogen peroxide. A series of laboratory leach tests showed the choice between H2O2 and CaO2 to be ore and process specific. H2O2 and/or Permeox™ improved the gold extraction in four out of five ores tested. (2 sulfide and 2 oxide). Mixtures of H2o2 and Permeox™ were also found to significantly increase the gold extraction rate. A fifth ore (sulfide) did not respond to peroxygen treatment. In addition, savings in NaCN consumption was obtained with Permeox™. Both peroxygens offer economic incentives to gold processing.

Introduction In contrast to the general type of crushing mechanism in which the crushing surfaces alternately approach and withdraw from each other, described earlier in this section, and continuous-pressure break¬ers such as rolls and roller mills that will be described in a later chapter, impact crushers load by striking pieces of rock while in free fall and hurling them at high speed against stationary surfaces. Because the impact crusher depends for its effectiveness upon high velocity, wear is greater than in the slower-moving jaw and cone¬type wear parts, and for this reason its use is strictly limited to rela¬tively soft, friable, and sticky rocks that are characteristic of many nonmetallic mineral deposits. A few of these are phosphates, lime¬stone, barite, clay, asbestos rock, and coal. However, several examples of their use on soft lead-zinc and precious metal ores have been known. Although the use of impact crushers is expanding today into the range of ores containing as much as 15-18% silica, Taggart16 set the practical limit at 5%, and in the 1940s and 1950s several installa¬tions in the US and western Europe exceeded the limits of economical maintenance and were quickly superseded by the slower-moving, con¬ventional crushers. A rock that tends to be plastic or bouncy in a jaw or gyratory crusher when the force is applied slowly to reach ultimate strength, may become brittle with rapid loading and thus increase the effective¬ness of the applied forces. For this reason it is to be expected that as the quality of hammers, grates, plates, and cages improves with advances in steel technology, the use of high-speed crushers of this kind will increase. Terminology Modern usage differentiates between the impactor and the hammer mill, the former relying primarily on the impact of hammers (fixed or free-swinging) and secondarily upon pieces striking one another or steel surfaces; the hammer mill relies on both the centrifugal impact force of free-swinging hammers and the attrition and shear action between these hammers and well-placed grates suspended at the bot¬tom just below the hammer circle. The hammer mill, because of its grate discharge, restricts discharge of oversize rock to the grate open¬ing, while at the same time providing a trap for removal of tramp iron or other uncrushables. The impactor discharges free, so generally works with a screen to control product sizes. The question of terminology, impactor vs, hammer mill, creates difficulties because the similarities appear to outweigh the differences by far; if one were to list the similarities in order of importance and then the differences, he would be forced to conclude that they would best be dealt with as a single kind of crusher. Taggart16 gave it four names and added "as it is variously known," but it must be remembered that in 1945 the machine was nearly exclusively of the flailing-hammer type, while today the fixed-hammer rotor is also com¬mon. In this chapter the terms impactor and hammer mill will be used where they seem to apply. It is perhaps unfortunate that this terminology is being confused with rock breaking at the mine, usually with hand-held tools, e.g., the article "High-Energy Impact Rockbreaking" by Grantmyre and Hawkes, CIM Bulletin, August 1975. General Description Impact breakers, impact crushers, and hammer mills accomplish material breaking and reduction primarily through impact action of the material with fixed or free-swinging hammers revolving about a central rotor. The material to be crushed enters through an opening at the top or top side known as the "feed opening" or "hopper opening" and falls into the path of rotation (hammer circle) of the hammers. Initial breakage is accomplished in midair by collision of the dropping feed material with high-speed hammers. The second stage of breakage occurs when the pieces hit plates or breaker bars which line the crusher boxlike frame. Hammer mills rely further on a shearing and attrition action between free-swinging hammers and grid bars or grates at the crusher bottom which restrict discharge of oversize material until it is broken sufficiently to pass through the grid opening. The term hammer is used in reference to the piece which strikes the material, whether it is fixed on the rotor or free-swinging. It

The purpose of this paper is to outline briefly some basic principles of ground- water hydrology that have application in mine hydrology. The development of a mine below the water table pleads for accurate values to answers of hydrology problems. Such problems involve both an inflow of water without adequate drainage facilities and a deficiency of water for the required use. Methods which give acceptable quantitative values for the solution of many ground-water problems depend on rather simple geologic structures, characterized chiefly by isotropic rocks of considerable areal extent. Unfortunately, mining operations are likely to be centered where isotropic rocks are not present. Consequently, methods that attempt to show values of the storage and transmitting capacity of rocks in mining areas must be applied with caution. In spite of complex geology and apparent uniqueness of individual mines and quarries, adherence to some concepts of ground water used by -hydrologists in the study of behavior of wells should be helpful to mine operators, The work of the Ground Water Branch of the U.S. Geological Survey through its history has been confined largely to the study of ground water as a resource, In view of the increasing number of problems relating to drainage of mines, the Branch started an investigation of mine hydrology in 1945 under the direction of W.T. Stuart, Mr. Stuart and other workers are making detailed studies of specific mine areas. In the present paper an attempt is made to synthesize some facts about ground water into usable form for the typical mine operator. Mining operations that extend below the water table disturb the natural hydrologic regimen, Prior to development, the water table slopes away from the site of a mine in at least one direction, but as soon as development begins and water is removed from the mine, the mine becomes the apex of a depressed cone in the water table, causing a convergence in the flow of water toward the mine. The behavior of the cone of depression, as it tends to deepen and increase in areal extent when the mine deepens, is related to the rate of withdrawal of water necessary to keep the mine dry. The significance and nature of the cone of depression in the vicinity of pumped wells has been studied by ground-water hydrologists for years, but the cone caused by pumping water from mines has generally been less systematically appraised.

It not only affects the cost of drilling and blasting, but also affects the efficiency of subsequent operations, such as loading, transportation and secondary crushing.

Of the 15 million tons of glass discarded in municipal wastes annually, about 2 million tons pass through incinerators and can be recovered by ore processing techniques. Although the primary use for this recovered waste glass would be as cullet in the manufacture of new glass containers, this approach is not always practical because of long shipping distances, high freight costs, and high purity requirements. Alternatives to the use of waste glass as cullet would be either as landfill or in secondary products. Although glass is considered a good landfill material, it is still wasteful of potentially valuable raw materials. Secondary products that can be made from waste glass1 include a variety of industrial and construction items. As part of the Bureau of Mines' program in secondary materials recovery, the Tuscaloosa Metallurgy Research Laboratory has conducted research concerned with the development of ceramic building products from waste glass. Materials employed in this research were obtained from municipal incinerator residues fractionated in the Bureau's continuous residue processing plant, College Park Metallurgy Research center.' The studies reported herein3,4 present research results using waste glass in the formulation and production of clay bricks, not only to produce improved products, but to reduce production costs, conserve natural raw materials, and most important, to reduce manufacturing energy requirements.

The Mount Pleasant Mines, or Mount Pleasant Joint Venture as it is presently known, is located approximately 59.5 km (37 miles) south of Fredericton, NB, Canada. Earliest indications of mineralization were found in 1954, during a regional reconnaissance geochemical stream sediment survey carried out over large parts of New Brunswick and the Gaspé Peninsula. The regional geology of New Brunswick is shown in Fig. 1. This program, sponsored by Selco Exploration Co. Ltd. of Toronto was conducted by H. Bloom, H.E. Hawkes, J.E. Riddell, and J.S. Webb. At its conclusion in 1955, 30 significant anomalous drainages were identified for follow-up evaluation. A total of 4937 sample sites were occupied. Geochemical reconnaissance using stream sediment sampling was a new technique which had only been field tested the previous year in the Gaspé and the northern coastal area of New Brunswick. Sediments collected from known mineralized drainages were found to leave a train of anomalous heavy metals from 1.6 to 9.7 km (1 to 6 miles) in length. When the exercise was extended to a reconnaissance survey, the previously unknown mineralized prospect at Nash Creek, New Brunswick, was discovered, staked, and later drilled (Hawkes and Bloom, 1956). Although it did not come into production, the discovery left little doubt as to the viability of the method and led to the Selco sponsorship of the program for the following two years.

Declining US ore grades along with skyrocketing energy, materials, labor, and regulatory costs underscored the urgency for technological innovation in the mineral processing area. Re¬liance on the scale-up and automation of unit operations was the sector's primary battle plan. Debate continues on the upper size limit of concentrating plants and whether process controls should be centralized or distributed in the mill. In the materials handling area, the economics of large-scale and mobile systems, particularly conveyors, were well documented in the literature. Comminution, the most costly and energy consuming area of the processing flowsheet, saw improvements in process controls and liner designs. The trend toward larger grinding units stalled somewhat during the year owing to some operational problems at commercial plants. Research and development of apparently less expensive physical separation processes-that also boast recovery of cleaner and more environmentally acceptable products -gained momentum during the year. Because of escalating capital cost requirements for new plant capacity, the year saw a greater interest by mill designers to re-examine existing capacity. The focus here is clearly to modify or retrofit unit operations with more efficient components as an alternative to installing more costly new equipment. The production of oxygen on the Moon utilizing indigenous materials is paramount to a successful lunar colonization. And several processes have been put forth to accomplish this. The LLOX generation schemes which have received the most study to date are those involving?: 1) the reduction of ilmenite (FeTi03) by H2, C, CO, CH4, CO-CI2, & Cl2 plasma, 2) magma electrolysis, both unadulterated and fluoride-fluxed, and 3) several others, including carbo-chlorination, HF acid leaching, fluorine extraction, magma oxidation, and vapor pyrolysis. The H2 reductions of ilmenite and magma electrolysis processes have received the most study to date. They are both feasible schemes with various pros and cons, including their feedstock requirements. However, all processes should be addressed at least at the onset of our considerations. There is an obvious need for considerably more experimentation and study. Some of these requisite studies are in progress, and this paper reviews several of the most studied and feasible processes for winning oxygen from lunar materials.

At the 25th Peruvian Mining Convention, the start-up of Antamina was called ?the mining event of the year.? Antamina, one of the largestcopper-zinc mines in the world, began operations in May 2001.Augusto Baertl is Executive Chairman of Compañía Minera Antamina, the operating company. He said in a convention address that Antamina would be in full production in 2002. ?I would like to stress that Antamina is, in every respect, a highly stringent operation, as it intends to be the Peruvianmine of the future,? Baertl said. ?Antamina has set the target of being, and remaining throughout time, a model mine as to technology, environmental practices and social responsibility.? [ ] In the areas of technology and operations, Baertl noted that ?we have incorporated the best engineering design available and state-of-the art technology for mining, grinding and transportation processes, among others.? In the environmental area, he said that ?we have carried out careful environ-mental impact studies and have incorporated modern technologies and methods to control and minimize any environmental impact.? In the social field, Baertl noted that ?our relationship with neighboring communities is being developed under the premises of the social responsibility philosophy.? These include popular consultation processes, environmental committees and conciliation discussion committees. The purpose, he said, is to encourage communities located within the area of influence of the project to find and lead by themselves their path toward sustainable development, beyond the life of the operation itself.?

Introduction The history of the Australian coal industry is almost as old as the history of Australia after new settlement. The first cargo of coal was exported from Newcastle to India in 1799. Coal has been mined in Australia for almost two centuries. But there are indications that the first coal was processed in 1877 in the Newcastle area. This is nearly 50 years after the first coal processing in Europe. Processing on any significant scale began in 1944 at the Newcastle Steel Works. In Queensland, however, coal processing did not begin until the second quarter of this century. The dramatic growth of mining and processing of Australian coal since the mid-60s is primarily due to the expansion of the export market in Japan, Asia, and Europe. Australian coals Black coal occurs in most of the major sedimentary basins of Australia. The better known deposits of commercial importance are in the Sydney, Bowen, Oakland, and Gailiee Basins. Apart from the Collie Basin in western Australia, other coal deposits of the Arckinga Basin in South Australia, the Bonaparte Basin in Northern Territory, and the Tasmania Basin are basically unexploited. The Sydney Basin of New South Wales and Bowen Basin of Queensland remain the major producers of black coal in Australia. Currently exploited or potentially commercial deposits of black coal in Australia occur in strata ranging in age from Permian to Tertiary. Estimated black coal reserves are summarized in Table 1. Coals from different ages have significant differences in their petrographic characteristics. Many of the Permian coals are usually rich in inertinite. Jurassic and Tertiary coals are typically rich in vitrinite content. Typical petrographic and chemical characteristics of some important Australian coking coals are summarized in Tables 2 and 3. The reserves of coking coals are restricted in the main to the Permian coals of the Sydney and Bowen Basins. Coal deposits in the latter are at shallow depth. A high percentage of these are being strip-mined. On the other hand, in the Sydney Basin, the majority of the reserves of good quality coking coals are at significant depth. The mining cost of these deposits is substantially higher than those in the Bowen Basin. It is usually possible to make strong coke with Australian Permian coals of vitrinite content much lower than the other international coals. But there are many major Permian deposits in Australia where low vitrinite content presents problems. As they are classified as marginal coking coals, optimization of their pro¬cessing plays an important role in meeting the market specifications of coking coal. The major reason for processing Australian coal is to reduce the ash content. Compared with British and some American coals, Australian coals are of relatively high ash content. Unlike American coals, more than 99% of the Australian coal deposits have sulfur content less than 1%. Consequently, sulfur control has never been a major problem. Merrill-Crowe is the primary process used for the concentration and purification of silver in a cyanide solution. The Langmuir Adsorption model for silver recovery in a cyanide solution was used for the study. The maximum adsorption capacity was 6.19 mmol/g for silver. This model properly adjusts the experimental results of the adsorption equilibrium with high correlation coefficients, which also favors the formation of a single layer of molecules adsorbed for the silver in the electrocoagulation- generated species. The thermodynamic parameters ΔG, ΔH, and ΔS were estimated, and it was found that the adsorption process is exothermic and spontaneous. For the kinetic study, the Lagergren second-order equation was used to study the adsorption speed. To characterize the solids coming from the electrocoagulation, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) were used; the results of this study suggest that silver is present in aluminite, hydroniumjarosite, and alunogen.

The reforestation potential of bauxite mining spoils by seeding was examined on this research work. The experimental plot was established on the location Strofi Koukouvista 5, Ghiona Mountain. The experiment consists of 3 species (Pinus nigra, Robinia pseudoacacia, and Spartium junceum) with 4 sowing treatments and 2 sowing seasons (autumn and spring). The treatments were: (1) broadcasting; (2) broadcasting and soil cultivation; (3) broadcasting with straw mulching and straw binding with asphalt emulsion; (4) broadcasting with soil cultivation, straw mulching and straw binding with asphalt emulsion. Third year results show that spring is better than autumn as a sowing season. Only the Spartium junceum species were found to germinate and survive in autumn. The results are better for all the species on the spring seeding. The most effective treatments for Robinia pseudoacacia and Pinus nigra are 3 and 4 while for the Spartium junceum even simple broadcasting shows good results although the best ones are achieved with treatments 2, 3 and 4. The paper?s findings show that reforestation by sowing could be effective for some species but further experimentation with other species is recommended. Concerning Robinia pseudoacacia, testing of different seed preparation treatments is needed in order to maximize the germination of seeds.

INTRODUCTION The Falconbridge mine ore body extends about 1.6 km (1 mile) in length and the deepest developed ore is on the 6050 level below surface. The ore zone varies in width from a few inches to over 30 m (100 ft) and the average width is 4.9 m (16 ft). Access levels are driven in the ore at 53.3-m (175-ft) intervals. The principal method of mining is overhand longitudinal cut-¬and-fill. Prior to 1962 timber square-set stoping as a secondary extraction method was used for about 15% of the total production. Undercut-and-fill was intro¬duced at Falconbridge in 1962 as a potential replace¬ment for the square-set method in heavy ground. The undercut-and-fill method was developed by Inco in the 1950s, its principal application being to transverse pillar mining. Falconbridge made modifications to this method. A feature of the mine is the No. 1 flat fault which dips 0.79 rad (45°) towards the northeast. The main characteristic of the fault is the presence of large swells of ore directly under the plane of the fault. The ground under the fault area is highly fractured and associated with massive sulfides. In the past, the ore under the fault was recovered, with difficulty, by either tight cut¬and-fill or square-set stoping. In the 1970s these meth¬ods were supplanted to a large degree by the under-cut-¬and-fill method. An advantage of the current undercut-and-fill method which uses cemented fill compared to the cut-and-fill and square-set methods is the reduction of dilution due to better control of the walls. At Falconbridge mine, it is estimated that the grade of ore produced by undercut¬and-fill is improved by approximately 10% over other methods. Where undercut-and-fill is used in very weak ground, a much greater improvement in grade can be expected. Table I shows mining production for 1974. The undercut-and-fill method was first used at Falconbridge during 1962. The first longitudinal stope was prepared for undercutting by laying down laminated beams the length of the stope and installing a lagging mat floor on top of the beams. Unconsolidated tailings fill was poured on top of the mat floor. As the cut ad¬vanced under the floor, heavy posts were placed under the laminated beams at 1.8-m (6-ft) intervals. During 1966, a radical change was made to the method when tailings fill, consolidated with portland cement, replaced the unconsolidated fill. This development eliminated the laminated beams and heavy mat floor and greatly im¬proved the stability of the stope. This system, with minor variations, is currently used at Falconbridge mine. APPLICATION The undercut-and-fill method is used to mine in¬competent ground, sills or floor pillars under mined-out levels, or a block of ore isolated between levels. It is occasionally used to advantage in sequencing produc¬tion from various mining blocks. This is done by mining a block of ore cut-and-fill method and at the same time mining the ore block directly underneath by the under¬cut-and-fill method. The undercut-and-fill mill holes at Falconbridge are either boreholes, stripped timbered raises, or steel mill holes. Boreholes and rock raises tend to slough in heavy and broken ground which increases dilution when sloughing exceeds the ore width outline and also in¬creases the difficulty of moving down to start the new cut. For example, in one installation, a 1.2-m (4-ft) diam borehole sloughed to a size of 3.7 x 5.5 m (12 x 18 ft). The undercut-and-fill method usually requires a mill hole extending from the level below the ore to the top horizon of the ore block. The customary methods of providing a mill hole are: 1) A borehole is driven from level to level through the ore block and a chute installed on the bottom level (Fig. 1). 2) An existing raise is used as a mill hole. If the raise is timbered, a steel mill hole is installed inside the timber and tailings fill poured around the steel mill hole (Fig. 1). 3) An existing steel mill hole, situated at one end of a mined-out stope, is used as the mill hole for an ad¬jacent undercut-and-fill ore block. The mill hole posi¬tion is determined when planning the mining sequence of the first stope (Fig. 2).

Introduction The feeding to zero concept involves feeding 600 µm x 0 (28 mesh x 0) size raw coal to heavy media (magnetite) cyclones along with the +600 µm (+28 mesh) size coal. Traditional circuits employ desliming or removing the 600 µm x 0 (28 mesh x 0) size fraction and feeding the cyclones +600 µm (+28 mesh) size coal. The feeding to zero concept recirculates 600 µm x 0 (28 mesh x 0) fines in the circuit. At the same time, a portion of the fine material is continuously withdrawn and recovered. This, in turn, prevents a fines buildup. This concept eliminates desliming screens and secondary fines circuitry for recovery of 600 x 150 µm (28 mesh x 100 mesh) coal. The result is a very simple circuit. Feeding to zero at Island Creek Island Creek Corp. was the first involved with the new concept in 1976. The company needed a temporary plant for the 9.5 mm x 0 (0.4 in. x 0) raw coal at its Pond Fork mine, near Madison, WV, while a full-scale plant was being designed and built. At that time, the Childress Corp., of Beckley, WV, became interested in the feeding to zero concept. Island Creek awarded a contract to Childress to build a single cyclone modular plant, incorporating this feeding to zero concept. The plant was erected in three months. The Pond Fork modular plant proved successful in attaining the desired feed rate of about 63.5 t/h (70 stph), while maintaining good separating efficiencies and low magnetite consumption rates. The 9.5 mm x 150 µm (0.4 in. x 100 mesh) clean coal was recovered and the 150 µm x 0 (100 mesh x 0) size was disposed of to waste. The full-scale plant was completed about two years later and the Pond Fork modular plant was moved to Holden, WV. There, it was incorporated into the Holden 29 preparation plant as a separate circuit for cleaning -25 mm (-1 in.) coal. In 1976, a similar plant was installed in Virginia by another company. These two plants are believed to be the first two operational plants in the United States incorporating the feeding to zero concept. Island Creek subsequently contracted with Childress for an identical plant at the Coal Mountain operation in West Virginia. The plant operated for three years before the mine was closed. The unit was then moved to the Spurlock mine near Martin, KY where it continues to operate. The successful operation of the Pond Fork and Coal Mountain plants before and after relocation proved both the performance and moveability of this type of circuit when constructed in a modular fashion. Since the first two plants were built, Island Creek has incorporated the feeding to zero circuit in nine additional plants. A grand total of 33 cyclones have been installed using this concept. One is the Providence mine, near Providence. Providence preparation plant Island Creek contracted with J.O. Lively Corp. of Glen White, WV in July 1978 for the construction of the Providence preparation plant. The plant began operation in February 1979. The construction period was about halved by building the plant with modular design concepts. Prefabricated sections, floors, and sides were brought in as units and then bolted in place. The Providence plant has a good track record of processing coal at a feed rate of 454 kt/h (500 stph). Feed coal to the plant has an average ash content of about 18% and sulfur content of about 4.5%. It contains about 22% refuse. The coal product has an average ash content of about 8% and sulfur content is about 3%. Raw West Kentucky No. 9 seam coal is conveyed from a box cut in the Providence mine to a rotary breaker. The breaker is fitted with 74 mm-diam (3 in.-diam) opening breaker plates. The Penjom gold mine treats highly preg-robbing carbonaceous ore by using relatively inexpensive gravity and hydrometallurgical methods. The mine is a joint venture between Avocet Gold Limited, a subsidiary of Avocet Mining PLC, a U.K listed mining company with interests in gold and tungsten, and the Pahang State Development Corporation (PKNP) who receive a 2% royalty. The operating team at Penjom embarked on a programme of innovation during 1998 following a realisation that almost all of the primary ore in the gold deposit was highly carbonaceous in nature. Earlier attempts at desliming and leaching the deslimed product through a normal CIL circuit had failed, and through shear necessity, the team turned to new technologies which were considered most suited to the ore characteristics indicated from pre­feasibility testwork. Between April and September, 1998, the mine introduced three key processes, which combined represent the elements of "The Penjom Process". The gravity circuit was boosted to maximise the capture of leachable sulphide and free gold from the relatively carbon free cyclone underflow stream, kerosene and diesel blanking was introduced to treat the cyclone overflow and RIL (resin-in­leach) technology utilised to replace the existing CIL (carbon-in-leach) circuit. Further experimentation with selective resin in partnership with Mintek of South Africa yielded a significant improvement to the process during 1999. Minix­Dowex resin was introduced mid year to replace a non-gold selective resin, which had been used in a flotation/batch leaching circuit for about nine months. Lower carbon levels in the feed at that stage led to the abandonment of flotation and the introduction of continuous RIL, which has been adopted as the major chemical process at the Penjom gold mine since September, 1999. Given the proven performance of the circuit to date, this process may be considered as a low cost option for the treatment of highly carbonaceous ores, particularly those which are not refractory and contain a reasonable percentage of free gold.

Transitioning from diesel-powered loading and hauling machinery to battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) responds to the need for deepening underground mines as regulations become tighter. When using BEVs, exhaust gases and diesel particulate matter (DPM) emissions can be eliminated, and the energy required for the machines is used more effectively. Unlike their diesel counterparts, which are refueled, BEV loading and hauling machines — specifically, load haul dump (LHD) machines — can use battery swapping. This brings additional aspects to the operation that need to be considered, which have not yet been studied extensively. This study used discrete event simulation (DES) to analyze how the different numbers of BEV LHDs affect queueing and productivity when using different numbers of batteries and different swapping times in an underground block cave mine. The results identified the formation of working groups, where the machines swapped their batteries concurrently within each group, and their relation to the queueing time. Additionally, the minimum number of batteries per machine was identified to maximize productivity while minimizing queueing time. This study demonstrates DES as a powerful tool to assess and analyze conceptual systems and identify their underlying structures, which can enhance the deployment of BEV LHDs in underground block cave mine operations.
